Favorite Movies

Not sure this has been done. A thread where we can discuss our favorite movie TOP 10.?
I was unable to find a way to send a link of my list.

My Top 10. The Innocents, Rebecca, Psycho,Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, War of the Worlds (original) Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Birds, Ben Hur, Haunted (1995), The Changeling (1980)

Most of my Top 10 are of the mystery/suspence/supernatural genres.. thus my unusual username..I am now being called spookie...eerie eh.

I chose The Innocents (1960) as No 1 because of its haunting, chilling, gothic atmosphere and its fine acting by Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins, Martin Stevens (Miles) and Pamela Franklin (Flora) the two haunted children. English icon Michael Redgrave plays a camero role as the children's wayward guardian.

Re: Favorite Movies

There have been a lot of "top 10 favourite movies" threads over the 16-ish years this site has existed, though it has gotten to the point where even using the search function to dig up an old one genuinely seems like too much effort.

In any case, I can't fault most of those picks, though I watched War of the Worlds recently and wasn't too impressed. Good on a technical level, but the rest of it...eh.

Thanks to you friend we can get another thread going. No doubt people's tastes change over 16 years. I know mine have. WOW special effects were groundbreaking for its day. Yes a rather corny, romantic sub plot . Still makes my top 10 of all sci fis.

spookiemoviemania 04-25-17 03:17 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

What of your own Top 10? I see you do not have them listed next to your username.

Iroquois 04-25-17 03:23 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

Yeah, I've had lists in the past but haven't bothered to put up a new one in ages since I find it hard to settle on a wholly satisfactory ten. A quick list would include The Blues Brothers, Apocalypse Now, Akira, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Jaws, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Escape From New York, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Taxi Driver, but I could still swap out a bunch of them for at least a couple of dozen other picks.

spookiemoviemania 04-25-17 04:14 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

Like most of those.. not a huge Blade Runner or Escape from New York Fan. I would have had MP & the Holy Grail on my list if there was aTop 15.. Probably also Apocalyse Now, Raiders and Good Bad Ugly..

Re: Favorite Movies

I'm quite new here, so I have not engaged in any Top 10 list of the past.... But I like several of the movies you listed in your Top 10. The Innocents is a masterpiece, and The Birds is one of my favorites. So many movies and so many have meant a lot to me at different periods in my life. A rough list in chrono

The Birds
Jaws
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
Taxi Driver
Star Wars
Alien
Apocalypse Now
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Burbs
Mulholland Drive

Dannii 04-25-17 07:42 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

I'm new too. I luv The Burbs, Tom Hanks is so funny in that film😆

Alfredlynch 04-25-17 07:54 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

Yeah, there is something special about the The Burbs to me. I love the Universal back-lot vibe of the movie, which adds to the surreal suburban feel Dante must have been going for, and the eclectic mix of characters and their interactions with each other is priceless.

Okay 04-25-17 08:40 AM

Re: Favorite Movies

In no particular order: (these are all films, I personally would give a perfect rating)
The White Ribbon
Casablanca
The Hunt
In Bruges
Synecdoche New York
Memento
12 Angry Men
Black Swan
Being John Malkovich
Anomalisa
Mommy
28 Days Later
Donnie Darko
The Shining
2001: A Space Odyssey
Requiem For A Dream
A Clockwork Orange

The Innocents is indeed "a masterpiece". Sorry to say I do like many of your Top 10 except Apocalyse Now, Alien, The Birds and Jaws. Somebody has 2001 A Space Odyssey listed. that was one of only two films I ever walked out on.. the other was Zorba the Greek.

Excellent Top 10, I've seen them all except Haunted.

Rebecca
and The Innocents are both amazing!

I Loved: Psycho, Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, War of the Worlds (original) and The Birds. The Birds does not get enough respect around here.

It's been too long since I seen the original, Ben Hur. You did mean the original right?

Picnic at Hanging Rock
, was pretty cool and interesting.
The Changeling (1980)...I liked this one pretty well too.

Picnic at Hanging Rock, was pretty cool and interesting. .
The Changeling (1980)...I liked this one pretty well too.
Picnic was one of the best ever Australian films made. Haunted is Brit made with Aidan Quinn and Kate Beckinsale. A real chiller that has gone largely unrecognised.
Our taste in movies is rather similar CR. :p

Re: Favorite Movies

I just changed my top 10. Gave it some more thought.

1. Kick Ass (2010)

2. Spider Man (2002) I've loved this film since I was a child.

3. Pulp Fiction (1994)

4. Scarface (1983)

5. Rocky (1976)

6. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Just rewatched it for a 4th time. It truly is a great fun film.

7. Reign Over Me (2007) I saw it twice in only 1 week, A great film about friendship that pulls at your heart and makes you smile.

8. Team America: World Police (2004) Best satire ever.

9. Elf (2003) I've loved it since I was a kid I've watched it a few times outside of Christmas time.

10. American Psycho (2000) Great character work.

Re: Favorite Movies

Fight Club
Toy Story
Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Requiem for a Dream
12 Angry Men
Whiplash
Funny Games (1997)
The Hunt
(These next ones are in extremely loose order)
Pulp Fiction
2001: A Space Odyssey
Dr Strangelove
The Deer Hunter
One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
No Country for Old Men
Amélie
Se7en
Mary and Max
Taxi Driver
Black Swan

Lettuce discuss!

Rebecca was fine. I have a grudge against 40's movies clichés! War of the Worlds was whatever, it felt like when you watch the movie of a book after you read the book, if you know what I mean. Birds was good. Psycho and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane were awesome!

It's so hard for me to narrow down the movies I like to a top 10. The only factors that put some up front are nostalgia or the time that I've put into them. It just seems so arbitrary to single out a handful that way.

Is this supposed to be a joke list with Movies that are considered bad?

Because Karate Kid II is pretty good just not as good as the original. I think you mean The Next Karate Kid or Karate Kid III.

I don't know now there is a couple of films in this list I'm confused now wether this is supposed to be a joke or not.

Edit: It's a joke.

If we are talking about movies that are considered bad then Batman Forever is outstanding. That's a legitimately great stylish 90's film, don't think it would work in any other time but for a cheesy self-aware time capsule there's nothing better.

Andrew McCarthy and Kim cattrel, whenever they are alone she comes to life, he built her from all the mannequin body parts, and displayed her in the department store display window. ☺

You can not go wrong with fruit. Surely it is not those that caused your allergy. I have swapped regular crisps for sweet potato ones. I also snack on nuts and seeds. Very healthy for you. Sweeties without sugar are not easy to find. Same as yummy desserts. I have found a sugarless Ice cream tho.

This film is made in Liverpool, 2 females on a nite out and they hook up with 2 Russian sailors, one female has a nite of dancing and fun with one sailor, and the other female falls for the other sailor and she writes to the Russian President, Brezhnev, for permission to go to Russia and marry him.

And you being a like a lot of woman, a hopeless romantic, loved this movie. Set in your home town. Must have been a thrill for the locals. When was it made. Any big names in it. I can picture Julie Walters in it.

It's 30yrs old this year, it's romantic but also shows the mass unemployment in Liverpool at the time. Alfred Molina plays one of the Russians.

Perhaps not my type of movie. My second is Rebecca. I call this a golden oldie. You have heard of Lawrence Olivier. He plays a widow who remarries and takes his new bride back to his family home.. Mandalay. What ensues is psychological torment of the new wife by a bitterly jealous housekeeper.

I reckon supernatural/ghosties look better in b&w anyway. Adds to the atmosphere. I will scout around for some others like those two and tell you about them if you like.

Definitely! If it comes from you it's gotta be worth watching.

Stars julia Roberts, coming of age movie about 3 young girls working in a pizza parlour. Each has their own problems to deal with. It's a chick flick. It's funny in parts.

You like humanity in your films. That is good. I am more for escapism. I do like a feel good story on occasions.

It's an American movie about a stock broker, Jon Cryer, who gets mixed up in a dodgy deal and goes on the run as 2 hit men are after him, he ends up shaving off his beard, dying his hair blonde and hiding out in a school posing as a student.

Re: Favorite Movies

I should have known that one. That was my fave actually. Jim Dale was much under rated. He should have made more of them than he did. Carry On Again Doctor was rather disappointing. I like Hattie Jacques and Syd of course. Terry Scott too. You know Syd James and Kenneth Williams had a running battle for much of the series over Williams perceived homosexuality. Syd also chased Barbara Windsor everywhere like a lost dog until she agreed to sleep with him.

Not sure I would like that.

I did read syd's autobiography and he says that he had a caravan on site while filming,he and Barbara would go there and sleep together.

Jim Dale did all his own stunts, he even did the one where he's on a trolley flying down the stairs😆

I did not read his bio. Would have made good reading I should imagine. That Dale stunt was one of the funniest scenes in the entire series. What was the skinny bloke with glasses name? He was always so soused to the gills that filming was often held up while they tried to sober him.

Charles Hawtrey, i think i may have spelt surname wrong but yeah he was always soused, they eventually stopped casting him cos of his problem.

I am only telling you what you already know. The thing is we both love the Carry ons. Our things in common are adding up. Dora Bryan is a good comic actress. There was one film I saw her in where she played a Danish/Swedish maid. Hilarious she was. Alistair Sim is one of my all time top Brit actors. Such a wide range he had from farcical comedy to a serious court judge. I still rate his Ebenezor Scrooge the best of all time.

Charles Hawtrey. Always forgetting his name. He was there at the start and was a mainstay until his alcoholism took over. He was a raging poof and unlike Williams did not hide the fact.

Charles Hawtrey. Always forgetting his name. He was in the very first film and was a mainstay until his alcoholismtook over. He was a raging poof and unlike Williams did not hide the fact.
Charles had a fire at his home in London, he ran into the street wrapped in a towel, followed by his boyfriend. Saw the newspapers pics on google quite recently.

That was at the end.. nothing before? Mine are the two murder scnes.. first Janet Leigh in the shower and Martin Balsam on the stairs. That screeching music that accompanies the murders is chilling. I liked your scene also the very end scene where he looks up and says' he is so harmless he would not even hurt a fly" or words similar.

The White Ribbon
Casablanca
The Hunt
In Bruges
Synecdoche New York
Memento
12 Angry Men
Black Swan
Being John Malkovich
Anomalisa
Mommy
28 Days Later
Donnie Darko
The Shining
2001: A Space Odyssey
Requiem For A Dream
A Clockwork Orange
Perfect rating? I watched 20 minutes of In Bruges and turned it off...Black Swan, despite a great Natalie Portman performance, has some screenplay inconsistencies that made it hard for me to buy everything that went on there...I don't understand Donnie Darko and 2001 bore the crap out of me.

My top10 in no particular order
Das Boot
Star Wars a new hope
Apocalypse Now
The Magnificent 7
The Blues Brothers
LOTR, Return of the King.
Mad Max 1
Mad Max fury road
Flying High (Aeroplane in US)
Jaws
I find it hard to go past Das Boot as the best movie i have ever seen, the sheer raw drama, the FX are top quality.

spookiemoviemania 05-06-17 10:18 PM

Re: Favorite Movies

Some goodn's there Mick. Jaws of course. The original Mad Max..an Aussie classic. Flying High was a hoot. Das Boot is one of the best of the submarine war movies I have seen. It has a greath depth (forgive the pun) to it. Magnificent 7 was good and Apocolypse Now as vilolent, raw and realistic as war itself. You have not commented on mine Mick.
