Sane's AsiaPac Top 100

Seems like everyone is doing Top 100s so thought I'd join in with something a bit different - my top 100 from the Asia/Pacific area.

Why Asia/Pacific? Well, basically because that's where my wife and I are from and it's where a lot of the movies we watch are from :)

It'll take me a while to get through this but hopefully people will find it interesting.

Cool. I'm including youtube videos so hopefully people can find something they might want to check out if they haven't seen much. Apart from the "arthouse" stuff there will be quite a lot of more mainstream Asian films - and the Pac part allows me to include stuff from Australia and NZ which you might have seen :)

It may seem like a funny question, but would you consider that Zatoichi movie a comedy? IMDb has it listed as one, which is why I ask.

All of Kitano's movies are funny at times - even the more serious themed movies like Sonatine or Fireworks. I guess because he started as a comedian he can't help it. Strangely enough the only film of his I've seen that was purely a comedy I found less funny than his serious films.

Zatoichi is kind of a fun action movie with large doses of Kitano's trademark humour :)

Pen-Ek Ratanaruang is a unique director. Both Headshot and Last Life in the Universe were incredibly visceral experiences.

It'd surprise me. I don't remember it that way. Though I've only seen it once and I wasn't impressed at all. First time I can remmeber CGI blood, too. :(

I've seen LLitU but not Headshot. Invisible Waves is the other Ratanaruang movie I've seen. Both he and Weerasethakul are fascinating directors and whilst I wouldn't say I completely "get" what they are going for all the time, I really like their style.

Justin 09-24-14 01:44 AM

Re: Sane's AsiaPac Top 100

Headshot is pretty crazy. Weerasethakul can be impossible at times, yet I've liked everything he's done so far. I don't even bother trying to "get" them. I'd rather just experience them through the senses.

Kitano knows fun :) What makes him quite exceptional though is how well he also deals with drama and tragedy.

He will have a movie in the top 10 of this list that left me emotionally drained - for days almost. It's probably not one of his better known films but I absolutely adored it.

It took me a long time to fully sort it out, but eventually I decided that Through the Olive Trees is probably my favorite Kiarostami film. I think that The Wind Will Carry Us, Through the Olive Trees, Life, And Nothing More, and Close-Up are four nearly equal, undeniable masterpieces. If Kiarostami had only made these four films, he'd still be one of the greatest filmmakers.

EDIT: The Terrorizers is also great, but I prefer 3 other Yang Dechang films to it :)

Through the Olive Trees was the first of his I saw and I'm pretty sure if I saw it again I'd rate it higher as I would understand the context better.

From memory at least four more Kiarostami movies will show up and one Yang movie - maybe more.

Very interseting list, certainly unique. :yup:

As for how many I think I'll have seen let me put it this way: if I were to start a drinking game where I took a shot for every film of the list I've seen, I imagine that at the end I would still be stone cold sober! :D

However I'll maybe pick up some recommendations along the way as I do enjoy a number of Asian films, particularly a number of the Korean ones I've seen.

of the four kiarostami's i've seen, i think i would rank them:

life, and nothing more
where is the friend's house?
the wind will carry us

they are all masterpieces though. i can't believe i haven't seen more of his films yet. he's basically my favorite director, if i have one.

After seeing Kiarostami's other two Koker films, I had a feeling that I'd underestimated Where is the Friend's Home? (the "the" in the title is apparently very significant as well, as opposed to a "my"), and I've been meaning to see it, but haven't gotten to it yet.

I haven't seen many of his early films, or ABC Africa, but besides that I've seen everything from Close-Up to Like Someone in Love

I think I've only seen three Hou films and they were all from the same period so I felt like I understood them all. I also feel like his movies of that time are similar to some more current Chinese directors so I kind of get what they are going for - movies focussing on the building of a nation or, in the case if Jia Zhangke or Jiang Wen, the changing of a nation.

I've only seen four from Yang and with the exception of Yi Yi I was less clear on what he was going for.

Tsai on the other hand I was able to connect with quite quickly because, rightly or wrongly, I thought his themes seemed similar to those of Wong Kar Wai.

Anyway, Hou is definitely one I need to see more of.

He's great. I've seen 9 of his films - and with the exception of Shirin, the lowest rating was
+. Whilst I rated Shirin a bit lower than that I still have a lot of respect for it because he did something no-one else had ever done.

I've got some of his early ones but haven't seen them yet. Gozaresh from 1977 will probably be next.

I would rate it below the two you have seen but it is still great. In fact all five of his I've seen have been great.

About Elly is worth it, if for nothing else, because of one pivotal scene in which the tension is absolutely unbearable. Farhadi makes you feel like you are there and I felt like I was starting to panic along with the characters in the film.

What Hou films have you seen? Two weeks ago I saw Flowers of Shanghai and The Puppetmaster in 35mm, I have seen Flowers of Shanghai several times and have mostly sorted through it, but seeing it on the big screen revealed it as even more complex than I had thought. The Puppetmaster was the real revelation though as I had only seen it before on VHS, it was one of my favorite experiences going to the movies, up there with seeing Ozu's Late Autumn in 35.

A Time to Live ..., Dust in the WInd and City of Sadness. I think I've got Three Times, Cafe Lumiere and Flight of the Red Balloon but haven't watched them yet. Unfortunately because I'm working full-time again after taking a couple of years off to study, I tend to be tired all the time and when I think about watching his films I always say "save that for when I can concentrate better" but never get around to them.

I think I'll change that and watch one this weekend.

I love this trilogy. More people around these parts should watch it.
One of them I liked somewhat less than the others but I won't spoil the list by saying which now ... pretty sure you know though.

I have seen Seven Samurai. Lets just say I am a film heathen. I only rate it 3.5.

Nothing wrong with that. IMO he has had two much better films and two that are pretty much as good. I respect Seven Samurai's "greatness" but as a film I think he and many of the other Japanese directors of the time did better.

I think Seven Samurai and Memories of Murder are a little low, but you've seen a lot more asian movies than I have.

Anyway, I'm enjoying your list keep it up.

As a one-off movie I would probably choose Close-Up. If you wanted to get into him more I'd start with the first of his "Koker" trilogy, Where is the Friend's Home?, and then watch Life & Nothing More and Through the Olive Trees.

His non-Iranian films are good too - Certified Copy & Like Someone in Love (Japanese).
