Recommendations: Animated Films
Coming up in the not too distant future, we will be compiling a MoFo Top Animated Films Countdown. All the details of the countdown have yet to be hashed out, but there's no time like the present to get started on your animated film viewing.
So I thought we could use this thread to post animated films that we recommend and to get recommendations from other MoFos for animated films that we may not yet know about. I'll post a list of my own recommendations in a moment. It's yet to be determined if it will be exclusively an animated features list (with a separate shorts list to follow or to run concurrently) or if it will be open to all animated films, so feel free to post suggestions for animated shorts as well. ETA, 9/1/2014: I will be hosting The MoFo Top Animated Films Countdown. It will include both feature films and shorts, so get watching and post your recommendations/pimp your favorites here! Deadline is midnight Pacific Time on December 1st. Details here: The MoFo Top Animated Films Countdown - Voting |

I already posted it in my top 101 thread, but I'll post it again:

http://ailtonmonte.files.wordpress.c...0/milenium.jpg There's one more animated film coming up after this one and most people will probably know which one it is. I'll tell you about that movie when the time is there, but let me just get this on the record first: IF there's ever an animated film that can become my favorite animated film of all time instead of that one, it's definitely Millennium Actress! My first viewing of it (a year ago, I think) was simply one of the richest (animated) motion picture experiences I've ever had. The story is emotionally extremely resonant, the storytelling is refreshingly original and the visuals are simply FANTASTIC! The film touches on many truths about life and love, but it's how it presents those truths that makes it truly a spectacular and extremely effective piece of cinema! The story seems quite simple at first. A TV interviewer and his cameraman visit a former famous actress who has kind of lived as a recluse for 30 years. The TV interviewer is a really big fan of hers and is really excited, while the cameraman is much more relaxed about it. Nothing prepares us yet for the sheer blast of originality that will come our way. The interview starts and suddenly Satoshi Kon makes one of the boldest and most refreshing moves I've ever seen. Instead of simply telling the actress' life story through flash backs, he uses the style and environment of the movies she has played in during her career to give us an insightful and wonderfully poetic look inside the soul of the actress. We're not merely getting an enumeration of facts, but in a surreal way, we're experiencing what she's going through psychologically. We witness her quest for a man that gave her a strange key when she was young. She believes that he will give it all meaning and that he'll be able to bring it all together. She believes that finding him will finally bring her happiness and peace of mind... Even if you're not into anime, you just have to check this film out. It's unlike anything I've ever seen before or since. The movie breathes love for the film medium, it breathes love for cinematic history and it's all the more fascinating, because this genuine love and passion is partnered with incredible animation, very skillful directing and a truly profound and existentially satisfying script. The creative genius behind this film, Satoshi Kon, has sadly died in 2010 at the young age of 46. He made a few other praised animated films, but for me, this one is his masterpiece. http://nasen75.files.wordpress.com/2...ess.jpeg?w=620 ------------------------------------------------- I'll post some more recommendations later, but this is the most important one that has to be seen by everyone! |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I really liked this one.. better than most Miyazaki films... (except Spirited Away, the Cat Returns and Whispers of the Heart)

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
Keep em coming. I need more animation recs. I have seen most of the animated Disney movies, a good part of Dreamworks' 3D stuff, and a good bit of Miyazaki and other anime, but I could use some more.

A Town Called Panic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3uG8LLuVPQ If you watch it and like it make sure to check out the television series it's based on. The episodes are only five minutes longs with just 19 episodes. Then vote for it on TV countdown. :D |
Second A Town Called Panic. It's just plain old fun. That's the only sub-titled film my 10-year-old will watch!
Mary and Max https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgRjB8PEDkM I'll say it because I fear no one else will. http://www.krank.ie/wp-content/uploa...eavy-Metal.jpg Love me some Heavy Metal. Obvious picks are also Up, Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Toy Story. |

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
Well, personally I was quite disappointed by Millennium Actress. When I saw all of the imagery it looked like it was going to be a fascinating film, but I guess it just wasn't my niche.
Satoshi Kon's first movie, Perfect Blue, is not only one of my favorite animated films, but one of my favorite films period. http://yuq.me/users/20/033/lJ4cpya5OQ.png Perfect Blue was Satoshi Kon's directorial debut, although he'd already worked on movies and manga. It's a psychological thriller about a singer turned actress who goes through a lifetime's worth of emotional and psychological trauma brought about by a number of things, the nature of her work and what she's had to do to become an actress, pressure from those around her to succeed, harassment by angry fans, and a hallucination that manifests itself physically. The plot is so well written with all of these themes that it will make you wonder what's real and what's fantasy, sending you into the mind of the protagonist. It's one of those movies where every time you watch it you find another piece to the intricate mystery. And the animation is so well drawn with an impressive amount of motion and polish only seen in the absolute best animated films ever made. http://www.animegatari.com/wp-conten...pa%C3%B1ol.jpg I've watched it over and over and over. I've watched it back to back. Every time I watch it I fall more in love with it. |

http://www.krank.ie/wp-content/uploa...eavy-Metal.jpg Love me some Heavy Metal. Well, my list will be almost entirely Japanese anime, but for non-Japanese animation along the lines of Heavy Metal and Fantastic Planet I would also put forward: Gandahar Fire and Ice Wizards Time Masters (which I haven't watched yet but intend to, it looks incredible) Other mentions I'd also second are The Secret of Nymh, Watership Down, The Plague Dogs, and A Scanner Darkly. Another noteworthy film is Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. A lovable children's film, but of such high quality that even an adult can appreciate. http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/H8e-4jIbycw/maxresdefault.jpg |

@Jiraffe: I liked the beginning of Heavy Metal (the cab story) and I actually wished the whole film would've centered around that character. Some of the other short stories were fun too, but I wasn't completely satisfied, because nothing ever reached the level of the first story for me. Still a great overall watch, though. I'll definitely watch some more low budget animated films like that one for this list. I love the free-spirited atmosphere of those movies. It might also be helpful to recommend some animation film directors. I'll try to watch most of the stuff from these guys: Ralph Bakshi (Liked Fritz the Cat and people say he's made better stuff) Bill Plympton (I watched his two Oscar nominated short films and they were excellent!) Don Bluth (Still need to see two of his classics) Makoto Shinkai (One of the more recent sensations in the anime world) Does anyone has any other recommendations? |

I'll watch it, though. It's from my country! |
I love animation, I used to be really into it and I know the craft pretty well (especially stop-motion), and I excelled in a few animation classes I took. For the latter part of high school and much of college, my dream was to be an animator. It's still a little bit of a hobby but it's tough work.
The thing is, I haven't delved as deeply into actual animation cinema as much as I wish I could say I have, so I'll be doing just that for this upcoming animation list. I will be using this list as well as this thread as a resource. If I come across any other good lists to utilize, I'll share them. I'm excited for this, let's make it good! My only recommendation (right now) is one I don't think too many people on here have seen, so I'm giving it a shout out in hopes more will. Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I haven't seen anyone mention ParaNorman, which is one of my favorite animated movies from recent years. A fun, heartfelt, thrilling movie with several laugh-out-loud moments and lots of references to past horror films. It also gets bonus points for pissing off conservatives by having an openly gay character. I preferred it slightly to Frankenweenie, the other stop-motion, love-letter-to-horror from the same year.

I find it interesting that nobody seems to think that Who Framed Roger Rabbit should be eligible for the list, but it's #18 on the list that Swan linked to in his post, which is listed as: "The 100 best animated movies:" "World-famous animators pick the best animated movies ever, including Disney and Pixar movies, cult movies, kids movies, stop-motion, anime and more". http://www.timeout.com/newyork/film/...d-movies-20-11 |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I definitely think Who Framed Roger Rabbit should be eligible. I've already made a list just to see what it would look like at the moment, and I included Roger Rabbit. And although I doubt anyone would vote for Space Jam, that's another movie that I think should should be eligible. If a significant portion of a movie takes place in an animated world and features heavy involvement from animated characters, then that's an animated movie, in my opinion.

IMDB lists it as an animated movie (#83): "Most Popular Animation Feature Films" http://www.imdb.com/search/title?at=...e_type=feature Rotten Tomatoes lists it as an animated movie (#15): "Top 100 Animation Movies" http://www.rottentomatoes.com/top/be...es/?category=2 And Swan's list (which was picked by "World-famous animators") lists it as an animated movie (#18): "The 100 best animated movies:" http://www.timeout.com/newyork/film/...d-movies-20-11 So what makes all the "experts" wrong, and the MoFos right? (I'm not trying to be rude or sarcastic. I'm just trying to understand why it's not considered an animated movie here, when it seems to be considered an animated movie everywhere else.) |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I don't think a final decision has been made, but so far the general consensus is that we want a true animation list. That means no hybrids.
As for why I vote no to Roger Rabbit's inclusion: To me, Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a live action movie with some animated characters and animated scenes. The majority of the film takes place on live action sets. Very little of it actually takes place in Toon Town. Two of the three principal characters - Roger, Eddie and Judge Doom - are played by actors. It made it on the 80s Countdown. It very much deserves its place there, but it doesn't belong here. And, again, that list that Swan posted is deeply flawed. It also includes Jason and the Argonauts and King Kong - movies that use animation as a special effect. Not to mention the fact that it has Pinocchio in the number 1 slot, so we won't be considering it any sort of authority on the subject. |

I understand that Roger Rabbit is not 100% animation, but it has animated characters in almost every scene, and the live actors interact with the animated characters throughout the movie. The main reason the movie is so popular is because of the animation, and the animated characters interacting with the live action. IMO it has more than enough animation to be considered an animated movie. I can't really comment much on either Jason and the Argonauts or King Kong because I'm not too familiar with either movie, but from what I remember, I wouldn't consider either of them animated movies, and I have no idea why they're on the list. And I was surprised to see that Pinocchio was the #1 movie on that list. It's a great movie, but far from #1 in my opinion. |

A couple more animated films worthy of a consideration:

Here is Don Hertzfeldt's Everything Will Be OK, I won't be voting for this particular short because it's included in It's Such a Beautiful Day. It's Such a Beautiful Day is a compilation of a trilogy starting with Everything Will Be OK, but it had it's own theatrical release so it counts. It's Such a Beautiful Day is required viewing. |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
May I recommend Wrinkles (2011)? It's a truly beautiful, human, honest work. Depressing yet oddly uplifting at times. The film documents life inside an elder care facility. Having a grandma who currently suffers from Alzheimer's disease, it hit close to home.

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
The first two sections and my underlined films are ones I'd consider 'listworthy', the others, I hope don't make it, that's just my honest opinion, as I think they are average to poor and there must be so many better films out there that I would rather explore. The Littler Mermaid and Hercules I don't mind actually, but if they make it, it will be because of people's childhood. Shrek I find massively overrated and mainly annoying, I'm not sure why you like Puss In Boots as it's so average and forgettable. Nightmare before Christmas I wouldn't mind making it either, it's unique and well made, that's just more personal preference that I didn't like it.

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
Cool movies that aren't great and won't make it, but have a lot of nostalgia for me:

@Daniel: Puss in Boots is quite underrated actually. It's not like it's going to make my list or anything, but it has a couple of fun and imaginative movies. I randomly saw it at the theater on a hangover day and it kept me cuffed. It has a few very nicely animated, dream-like bits. The Little Mermaid is simply a good Disney movie. It's not a particular favorite of mine, but it's definitely worth watching. It's also responsible for the Disney Renaissance. Hercules is not for everyone, but I happen to think it's an energetic blast of a film that cleverly comments on the "celebrity status" some people have today, but in a jacket of Americanized Greek mythology. Again, probably not going to make my list, but definitely a film that's worthy of being seen. The Shrek movies were pretty innovating and set a whole different, new standard for mainstream animation films. I like the first two quite a bit. The Nightmare Before Christmas is simply a great film. I'm quite surprised that you don't like it. |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I am strongly considering starting a thread where I do an IMDb top 250 style deal for animated shorts. I'd probably keep it at 100, but I think it would be better than us including shorts in a list with features. It would probably even better than us trying to vote and compile an animated short list, but I'd still like to see that happen.
|
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I'm really curious to see how the nostalgia factor plays out. For obvious reasons it's probably going to be a bigger factor with this list than others.
Already, though, I can see the cutoff is going to be brutal. I like to start on lists early by listing a lot of possibilities and revising down/adding whenever they kick off, and I'm kind of shocked at how many tough choices I've already got. And that's without diving into the recommendations, which I think I'm going to really sink my teeth into this time, since I've neglected less mainstream animation a fair bit. If that adds even 2-3 more films to the mix, I'm going to have to leave out some really good entries. |
My immediate watchlist consists of these films, which are movies I've been meaning to see for a while now anyway. Figure I'll get to these first.
Persepolis Akira Grave of the Fireflies Allegro non troppo A Town Called Panic I could actually add more to this immediate watchlist, I want to see more Bakshi for example, but those are the important ones. |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
Allegro non troppo is the only one of those I haven't seen. The other four all have a chance of making my list.

Don't forget this one:
Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honnêamise (1987) This is the story of a fictional nation's space program. Incredible vibrant, imaginative, but realistic fantasy world. The space program's development is mirrored in the main characters journey from aimlessness to taking control of his life to build something worthwhile for the future. Punctuated by intense though down to earth action scenes and vistas of great beauty, all incredibly animated and stylish, with a story that is both very human and relatable and also a little political. Probably the best anime I have ever seen. |
I wonder if movies from anime series count (I don't mean ghibli stuff, but for instance Dragonball or Naruto movies)
Other than those I just talked about these are pretty much all the animated films I've seen Masterpiece Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) The Castle in the Sky (1986) Grave of the Fireflies (1988) The Lion King (1994) Princess Mononoke (1997) Whisper of the Heart (1995) Great Akira (1988) My Neighbor Totoro (1988) Beauty and the Beast (1991) The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) Persepolis (2007) Ponyo (2008) Porco Rosso (1992) Ratatouille (2007) Toy Story 1,2 and 3 WALL·E (2008) Waltz with Bashir (2008) Very Good PMMM (2012) (I think the 12 episodes are better than the 2 movies, if I was talking about the episodes i'd say it's great) Spirited Away (2002) (I need to rewatch it) The Jungle Book (1967) Monsters, Inc. (2001) The Secret World of Arrietty (2010) Up (2009) (need a rewatch) Good Mary and Max (2009) Bambi (1942) Finding Nemo (2003) From up on Poppy Hill (2011) How to Train Your Dragon (2010) The Incredibles (2004) Tokyo Godfathers (2003) Dumbo (1941) |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I bet Cagliostro even gets shafted on this. It's a good film, I agree. I thought Castle in the Sky was interesting too. For as much crap as Guap gets Miyazaki is entertaining.

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
He's more than entertaining he's the greatest animator that ever lived haha.

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
For those who have seen them, what are your views on the films of anime series? Do you need to watch the series to understand the movies? I'm thinking of stuff like Cowboy Bebop, Revolutionary Girl Utena and the Evangelion films. I've heard good things about these but never quite knew where to start.
|
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
I haven't seen the Utena series, but I did enjoy the film. I might have understood what the hell was going on if I had watched the series though.
|
I second the recommendations of Mary and Max - beautiful, Waltz with Bashir - insightful, Persepolis - full of life. A Town Called Panic makes me cry laughing, it appeals to my sense of the ridiculous. I watched them all after I discover them seeing the Cravendale milk ads.
If you have children (and even if you don't they can still make you smile!) Pingu is a lovely playful series of 5 minute films http://youtu.be/Gi3vS6bD2CA I love claymation, and living in Bristol you have to recommend our local heroes Wallace and Gromit and the work of Aardman Animations , specially love Creature Comforts http://youtu.be/hskFu3ZmNQs |

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...s)_poster.jpeg I can't believe when I was listing movies I forgot Chicken Run, Frankenweenie, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Corpse Bride. Especially, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. That's one of my favorite movies. Yoda, you should sell the list space of the people who don't want to participate. I'm only sorta kidding. :D |

Hercules Antz Antz and A Bug's Life came out around the same time, but I thought Antz was the much better movie. Woody Allen is more entertaining as an ant than a human being. :D If direct-to-video titles are eligible, then Batman fans should definitely give this a try: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...asm_poster.jpg |

Out of these, I hope the non-underlined ones don't make it as they are mainly average: GOOD Robin HoodDECENT The Lady and the TrampNOT WORTH WATCHING
I think these movies are way underrated. None of these are "average" or below, and they all have a chance to make my list, especially these: Wreck-It Ralph Despicable Me Despicable Me 2 Lilo & Stitch Ice Age Over the Hedge The Nightmare Before Christmas Anastasia |
I watched A Town Called Panic yesterday and it was one really weird movie. I definitely enjoyed it but I don't know if I love it. I purchased a 7 day "rental" from Amazon Instant so I'll probably watch it again before the week is out.

Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
Watch it again, Miss Vicky. If you don't love it after that, watch it again. Repeat that process until you love it.

I started loving animated films when I was around 20. Though I suspect I am a bit different from the rest of the forum in this aspect. |

Both of those will make my list. I know Walt Disney has made much better movies than Hercules, but nostalgia will be the ruling factor with my choices.

And yeah, I haven't watched that much anime, just Miyazaki mainly, who I like quite a lot. My favourite is Totoro. I will try and watch the rest of his films for my list, as well as other anime titles. I have Paprika recorded which looks interesting. |
Re: Recommendations: Animated Films
The top 40 from my top 100 animated films list. One might notice that it's very different from the typical animated films western people watch because they are aimed at completely different audiences and reflect different sensibilities. I do not really like animated movies in the American conception of animation as a genre. So this basically is a top animated films list for people who don't like animated films (the closest western equivalent to most of these in terms of sensibilities, writing and target audience this would be science fiction and fantasy literature):
40. Garden of Words (2013) 39. The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (2010) 38. Akira (1988) 37. 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007) 36. Millennium Actress (2001) 35. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 2nd A's (2012) 34. Sky Crawlers (2008) 33. On Your Mark (1995) 32. The Old Man and the Sea (1999) 31. Evangelion 1.0 (2007) 30. Patlabor 2 (1993) 29. Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (1993) 28. Adolescence of Utena (1999) 27. Wings of Honneamise (1987) 26. Evangelion 2.0 (2009) 25. Howl's Moving Castle (2004) 24. Taiyou no ouji Horusu no daibouken (1968) 23. Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) 22. Urusei Yatsura 2: Byûtifuru dorîmâ (1984) 21. Legend of Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is a Sea of Stars (1988) 20. Mobile Suit Gundam film trilogy (1981) 19. Galaxy Express 999 (1979) 18. Ghost in the Shell (1995) 17. Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (2000) 16. Lupin the 3rd; Castle of Cagliostro (1979) 15. The Wind Rises (2013) 14. Gurren Lagann film compilation (2009) 13. Gunbuster (1988) 12. Whisper of the Heart (1995) 11. The End of Evangelion (1997) 10. Only Yesterday (1991) 9. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) 8. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) 7. Castle in the Sky (1986) 6. Porco Rosso (1992) 5. Spirited Away (2001) 4. Princess Mononoke (1997) 3. My Neighbor Totoro (1988) 2. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) 1. Puella Magi Madoka Magica film compilation (2012) Note: (13) and (17) are direct to video miniseries of 6 and 4 half hour episodes each, they are listed on criticker as movies though (since they are a linear narratives and can be watched on a single day). |
