The Incredible Hulk

Well, big news today: apparently they've cast the role of Bruce Banner in The Incredible Hulk, and it's going to be...

...Edward Freakin' Norton!

Wow. Very wow.

I thought Hulk had some good ideas, and at its peak was a lot of fun, but got started too slowly and completely lost its mind in the last act. Still, there was enough there to give me hope for this. I dunno if they're looking at a franchise reboot in only the second film, but I wouldn't be terribly averse to the idea.

Thoughts?

Why sequel?!?!The first movie was a disaster and how do they think that changing the main actor will get any better and why Ed Norton he is a good actor, even one of my favorite but I don't think he is appropriate for the role he doesn't have the physic of Bruce Banner

Yoda 04-16-07 01:15 PM

Re: The Incredible Hulk

Well, a few things:
  1. I think the first film had a few things worth exploring. I found the action sequences highly entertaining.
  2. They have a new director and a new writer, so I don't think anyone's pretending that a new lead alone will make this worthwhile.
  3. Banner's not supposed to be a muscular guy; the contrast between Banner and the Hulk is kind of the point, I think. Bill Bixby, who played Banner in the late 70s TV series, was a pretty normally-sized man, I believe.

B-card 04-16-07 01:57 PM

Re: The Incredible Hulk

1.There were like three or four Action sequences in the first movie no doubt that they were well made and as you said Highly Entertaining

2.Have you checked who is the Director-->Louis Leterrier who made The Transporter(I don't belive him) but usually in this genre-Comic book movies, sequels are better than the original so we shall see

Re: The Incredible Hulk

To me, the only problem with the first Hulk flick was the directing. Eric Bana, on the other hand, i really liked. And since then i've only grown to like him more.

Ed Norton...well i might have to ponder on this one for a bit.

I think Ed Norton would make a great David Banner, but doing another Hulk film already seems ludicrous.

Re: The Incredible Hulk

Even though Ang Lee's Hulk wasn't what I expected at all, I still liked it. Too much science and sentimentality, yeah, but still good. I could see what Lee was trying to do, but I was still kind of hoping the sequel would be someone else's film, just because Lee's style didn't suit the Marvel world.

The title and director of The Incredible Hulk already make it seem more of a conventional "super-hero" flick, so maybe this is the one that will be considered cool by us comic-book geeks. I'm looking forward to it, because for me, like many others, the highlight of the first Hulk was the action. And The Transporter made some pretty good action scenes out of a small budget, so just think what Louis Leterrier will achieve with a Hulk-sized budget.

Universal Pictures and Marvel Studios Presents
The Incredible Hulk
Release Date: June 13, 2008

"The Incredible Hulk" kicks off an all-new, explosive and action-packed epic of one of the most popular superheroes of all time. In this new beginning, scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) desperately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poisoned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk.

Living in the shadows--cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler)--Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his nemesis, General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the military machinery that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.

As all three grapple with the secrets that led to The Hulk's creation, they are confronted with a monstrous new adversary known as The Abomination (Tim Roth), whose destructive strength exceeds even The Hulk's own. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice: accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or find heroism in the creature he holds inside--The Incredible Hulk.

The film is directed by Louis Leterrier and written by Zak Penn.

From X-Men 181 to Hulk 300 to Hulk---..."I have a metal crutch on my foot" so pity me Heavy Metal kinda guy/Goliath, I have loved the Green/Grey one. I remember watching B.B. change a tire on T.V. back when I was a "wet-behind-the-ears" youngin.
I remember when ol' Lou was awesome as the "don't make me angry" guy. Hell, I did not wanna make him angry. I was reading Richie Rich and Archie and Casper and Hot Stuff when the T.V. show debuted. We were in awe as boys, my friends an I, I am still in awe with comics form my younger days. This was when comics were staples, now they seem just like side dishes....I liked the simple "cannot wait till next issue" books/episodes. I am glad comic movies have become almost the same price as todays comic stand "trash" because today's comic movies remind me of yesterday's comic books.

I dont know whats with the pessimism. First, i thought the ang lee version was unfairly criticised. It was an ok film. Nowhere near as bad as people made it out to be. Fight scenes with dogs and the desert against army was good.

Now with the second film. People dont have to compare it with the first cos its a new crew entirely and a different film. Ed norton playing banner? Good choice. Very versatile artist.

look forward to the seeing the green angry man.

When they are available bud.

What is recently available though for The Incredible Hulk is a possible piece of artwork that Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures will use for the marketing campaign and merchandising next year.

Sorry for the size...

I think Ang Lee is to be commended for his brave(if misguided attempt) at making The Hulk look like a comic book.

Do hope this one is a little bit more true to the source material. I'm not a stickler for it but I'm glad it seems to have a story similar to The Incredible Hulk:Ultimate Destruction game.
As for Lou Ferrigno doing the voice that's hot fuzz but Mark Hamill as Gargoyle? That would be unbe-freaking-lievable!

Re: The Incredible Hulk

I'm in the camp that says the Ang Lee Hulk was unfairly criticized.
Yes, he did do some "interesting" cinematography with the way scenes overlapped and blended on the screen, but to me, it didn't detract from the film so much as just gave me the feel of it being a comic... which it well... is.
And as for Eric Bana as Banner. When the movie came out and I was talking to people about it, many people thought he just couldn't act because he seemed so wooden, emotionless, in the film when he was being just Banner. I looked at it another way, he was playing the part perfectly. Banner's entire life has been about repressing the memories and emotions of what happened to him as a child. He has gotten so used to it that, as an adult, its just how he is. It then translates perfectly into seeing him try to keep repressing emotions once they are what turns him into a "monster" that is driven by those very emotions. I thought Bana did a great job of acting out the range from emotionless, to rage filled...

As for the new film, I hope they don't try to retell the history in a different way... just go forward from where Hulk left off. I'm not so enthused that Liv Tyler is in this. Besides the fact that I just have a thing for Jennifer Connelly :dizzy: I'm just not impressed by Tyler's acting... Ed Norton should be a really good Banner though, it will be interesting to see how he plays the part as opposed to Bana...

There was nothing wrong with the first hulk movie, as a reader of comics, I thought the art style used in the movie was awesome, with the multiple frames n what not. It did sort of drag on and the villain wasn't that cool... final fight sucked.

What scale? If this is 1:1, I'm not impressed. He looks unrealistic, and his size is unacceptable. In the Ang Lee film, he grew progressively with each change, but was still much larger; so I don't understand why this production would choose a smaller Hulk. Let's hope he's bigger and meaner than this. :yup:

Naturally he looks unrealistic, it's a model. Although it's only a scaled model of him, have you seen the comparison of it and the woman in picture #2? I think he looks cool. Besides what do you want him to be the size of ?

Yoda 02-17-08 10:49 AM

Re: The Incredible Hulk

He was pretty big in the last film, and the last film was pretty bad. I think this movie is going to be good or bad largely independent of the size of the Hulk. And, as Jason pointed out, it is just a model, anyway.

I know it's just a model, but since this film is already in post-production, I have to wonder whether the model is just a concept (which are usually pretty outlandish compared to what ultimately reaches film), or actually a reference model for the film (which would be fairly close to final render).

And yes, my size comment was based on the pic of the model next to the woman. He's large, but not as large as I'd expect him to be. Based on her, I'd estimate that he's a little over 8ft tall, and we have more than a few people on this planet 7ft and over. I guess they're going to infuse the "hulkiness" to his overall strength, but still... he just looks too small and lean to me to be as imposing as the mythos of the Incredible Hulk deserves.

Agreed. I don't think the failure of the first film had anything to do with the size of the Hulk. In fact, I had the most fun watching a huge Hulk throwing tanks and rolling cars down a San Francisco street. The film did a good job of making him larger than life, and thus, seemingly unstoppable.

That's not entirely true. He's just as large in the Ultimates storyline; and anyway, relative size in comics is questionable because there are so many different artistic styles.

I don't know, he's just not very broad, and his muscles are smallish. He looks like he could cause trouble, that's for sure... just not Hulk trouble. But that's me. :)

7thson 02-17-08 04:43 PM

Re: The Incredible Hulk

According to Marvel Universe the Hulk is 7 feet 8 inches and weighs a little over 1000 lbs (This is the typical green/savage Hulk). To me that is flipping huge. Take a look up at your average ceiling in a room and imagine something that tall also being muscular and weighing a grand. Certainly artist styles and such may portray him as more of a giant, but if he falls between the 7-8 foot range I think it is perfect.

It looks like they got the tone and flavor perfect to me. Norton is as good as I hoped as Banner. I love the lead up and intro of the Hulk. The falling/jumping from the copter looks off, however. The CGI is quite good and will only get better. Hulk looks WAY better then Ang Lee's pudgy version.

Then again, the trailers for Hulk were unbelievable, but the final product was disappointing, so I'm loathe to draw any conclusions from this. As a trailer, it was just decent, but it doesn't make me particularly worried about how the film will turn out.

I will say that I'm intrigued, by the slightly smaller, more compact, and generally gruffer looking Hulk design.

Of course i could be wrong but i got the impression it's gonna possibly blow, if a trailer that can show the film for it's best doesn't look good then not much hope. I don't like the way they've set up Tim Roth as the bad guy in it and Hulk looks almost too human. Compared to Iron Man and Dark Knight it looks very weak.

The only Super-Hero that even rivals The Hulk to me is Wolverine. So I guess I'm saying that this would have to be like Battlefield Earth bad for me not to watch it at least 3 or 4 times. And yes I actually saw Battlefield Earth in the theater, such a sad, sad little man I am.

Re: The Incredible Hulk

I don't know what trailer you guys saw but I thought it looked pretty freakin good. I'm not sure why some of you are saying he looks smaller. He looked the same to me. And he looked better I thought. The last one was a little to roundish, but this Hulk looks a little more polished and meaner. It may be throwing you guys off because of The Abomination's size. It appears that they are making him slightly larger than The Hulk and in the Marvel verse they were pretty close to the same size. But don't let that turn you away from what is and always has been The Hulk's greatest and really only weapon. His almost unlimited strength, which increases the more he gets hit, hurt or otherwise. Honestly that was one of my biggest problems with the first film, The Hulk doesn't "get bigger" when someone shoots him. He gets MAD! And while it looked pretty cool when he "Hulked up" and got a little bigger it went against the fabric of the story. I run pretty hot and cold on Ed Norton at times but I'm really beginning to think he may be trying to make a solid Hulk movie and if that's truly the case, then into the "cool book" he goes.

That's just me, though.
Really, i like Edward Norton plus like like when he falls out of the helicopter and you see him fall into the street then the hulk hands busts out! You like Norton?

I still enjoyed Bana's portrayal, although, not all aspects of the movie.

This movie, for both comic and Hulk fans, is going to be great. The funny thing though: us comic fans are a bit protective of our faithfullness. Let go!! I am going too - I think it is going to be an amazing let loose - be free film, kinda like the tire iron imulsion of good and anger that occured in the first Tv show.

Looks like a fairly different feel from the Ang Lee version. I'm kind of torn on the Hulk's more "realistic" size. Fans of the comic book tell me this is more in keeping with the source material, though as someone who just likes to see stuff 'splode, a really big Hulk is fun to watch, regardless of the character's history.

Definitely interested in this, though I find I can't quite get quite as excited for this as I was able to for the last one. I suppose that, irrational tough it is, I can't shake the feeling that I've already seen parts of it, even though it figures to be a dramatically different film. I guess having already seen the last Hulk flinging tanks around like Olympic hammers dulls the shine on this latest effort a little.

Amen to that. What I really want to know is if he is going to talk this time. If I have to go through another movie without a "HULK SMASH!!!" I am seriously going to be pissed... like possibly letter bomb pissed even.

Well, yeah, who would ever get tired of that? Whatsamatteryou?

I just read that both the Hulk and Abomination talk in the movie. The rumor was started at the NY CC that Lou Ferrigno is going to deliver the Hulk Smash voice himself.

Could someone clue me in. I don't mean to sound too much like a spaz, but is the new Hulk movie a complete remake of the original story, or is it a sequel? Please don't go anal on me, my sound card's busted so I can't really deduce from the trailer.

It's a reboot of the first, yet a somewhat continuation of the Ang Lee original.

I believe it's a complete reboot. I've heard some people wondering if it's a continuation of the first because the way in which this one opens makes it seem like it could be, but from what I've read that's just a coincidence and it's meant to start the franchise completely anew.

That's what I understand also. Forget all other versions, This will be like Batman Begins, for Hulk fans.

The first one was god awful, I'm really hopeful they'll make a way better job in the second one. By the trailer it looks like its going to be full of action.
