The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

1 Attachment(s)

It's nearing Halloween time, so why not have a trick or treat styled song tournament? You can decide what that means, whether it's scary songs, random songs, or just business as usual.

We're looking at 8 nominations each, with the only restriction being that each must be less than 10 minutes in length. The match-ups will be chosen via random.org

My trick or treat device is that I put my ipod on shuffle and let it decide which 8 songs would be played by me. (And yes, that really was the first song right out the gate. I won't cheat, unless it's a song over 10 minutes. )

White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
Mr Bungle - Backstrokin'
Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw
Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)

 Didn't have to skip anything.

“Hungry Like the Wolf” is already a winner, if that matters. Sexy Celebrity won it for the British Song Tournament.

I'm aiming to start this late Sunday afternoon my time. Makes it lateish morning for EST. Speed-wise, I'd like it to be at around a voting session per day. Is that ok with everyone?

cat_sidhe 10-12-18 02:32 PM

Re: The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

Also, don't be shy about asking to switch anything out. I don't mind the editing business. :D

cricket 10-12-18 03:12 PM

I don't know if I can get in this. I've already nominated every song I know, I'm super busy for a while, and plus I don't know any more songs.

Wat. Has the well run dry?

Well you have until Sunday late morning your time to raid your wife's record collection get some inspiration. *cough*

I don't expect a huge turnout so the voting rounds won't be long.

She said, with 2 songs clocking at either 7 min or over. But under 10. :shifty:

What the hell, I'm in because it's only 8 songs per player. Got tired of the previous tourney I was in because each round was so huge. Bit more metal than usual but hey, it's Halloween :D

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask
Venom - Cry Wolf
Warfare - Baron Frankenstein
Argentum - La Sorella di Satana

Re: The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

Day 1 round ! is coming up in few minutes, just checking that everyone's ok with random.org being used as it may mean that one of your noms goes up against another one of your own. It sounds harsh, but in fact actually guarantees one of your songs going through to the next round.

That cool with everyone?

CosmicRunaway 10-14-18 11:29 AM

Re: The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

The positive side of being matched up against yourself is that you're guaranteed to have one of your songs make it through that round haha.

That's ok, I'm only doing 8 match-ups for round one, so it's 4 days for Round 1, with a voting session per day. I'll most probably put up each round at around 8pm GMT+1 every day. @cricket has offered to be a tie breaker should one be needed. :)

I'll be able to ace every set after today. If any of mine are involved in a tie you might as well just automatically put whatever the opposition is through then ..... nah, on second thunks scrub that - might as well make him at least suffer having to listen to them ;)

cat_sidhe 10-14-18 12:30 PM

I see on mobile the spacing between matched sets is lacking. Fixing....

pahaK 10-14-18 12:57 PM

ROUND 1 - DAY1

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
That Gothic Americana sounded quite interesting and I liked the video too. I may have to check out these Heathen Apostles. The other isn't terrible either but really generic.

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
Not nearly as good as the Americana in the first pair this Country song is still much more to my tastes than Michael Jackson. It's way too repetitive though.

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
Didn't like the first at all. Way too sweet and syrupy for me. The second is just a generic rock song but at least it isn't exactly irritating.

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
I did like Cemetery Girls quite a bit and will check out this band as well. Unfortunately they're up against a solid 5/5 spooky Halloween crust.

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
Not a fan of either but Rob Zombie is closer to being good (it feels like a first iteration of a song that was supposed to be good but was never finalized).

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
First song did nothing to me (was reading some forums while it was playing and I've already forgotten it). The Jacksons song was surprisingly OK. Much better than Michael's solo stuff.

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
Didn't like either that much. I was contemplating to nominate Alice Cooper as well but this really isn't one of his good songs. Still kinda better than the other.

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
The first sounds awfully familiar. Is it a cover or rip-off of something? Anyways it's kinda nice and has this weird mellow sound. Don't like the other that much.

cat_sidhe 10-14-18 01:21 PM

ROUND 1 DAY1

Oh boy, some difficult match-ups already.

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
Haven't heard either song before, but the first was more my bag of nuts. I also have a thing for fiddles.

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
Tough choice for me as I love early Michael Jackson and that comes off a great album. But I'd never heard the second before. I really liked it. Ugh. Hate the tought choices. I'm happy for either to go through, and since I have to vote, the newbie gets it.

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
Love this 80s song. Limahl is kind of awesome, and that bassline. Wat even....

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
Another two first times for me, preferred the first.

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
Tough one as I like that Rob Zombie song. Just not enough to beat Mike Patton, a human beatbox and Dan the Automator.

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
UGH! Another hard one. I'm going with The Jacksons because I don't know the song and it's pretty awesomely 80s, even though I do love my own own.

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
HARDEST MATCH-UP SO HAR. I love that Oingo Boingo song, but...Jason. <3 JASON DONE BY ALICE. :bawling:

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
Wasn't really a fan of the first, so it goes to the Swedes. I love that album btw. It's kind of indescribable and very, very good.

Hm, I can't help myself by replying to this as XTC are anything but generic. The instrumentation, Colin's walking bass line, the jangly guitar, the crisply compressed snare drum, the modality of this pop tune is not what I learned as beign generic. It does touch down on a familiar sense of format in that it has all of the verse.chorus.bridge.chorus bridge formula, making it a properly assembled tune, but with a bit more peripheral on XTC I'm willing to bet that your perspective might be altered, if only by a little bit.

Good starting point album - Drums and Wires or English Settlement.

:)

EDIT: Actually, my description was for The Mayor of Simpleton..another better track from their Oranges/Lemons album.

The provided link for "Cemetery Girls" does not work here. I have listened to this one instead. If this is the wrong song please let me know and I will re-evaluate that match-up.

Round 1 | Day 1

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
That first video is really interesting but the music is not really my style. One of my friends used to be big into L'Arc~en~Ciel, but I haven't thought about them in years. I do not remember this song from DMC4 at all, but then again I've also blocked a lot of that game out of my mind haha.

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
"Workin' Day and Night" is no "Thriller", but it gets my vote here. I like the lyrics for "Bit by a Dog", but again that style of music is just not something I particularly like.

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
Fun fact: I only very recently learned that the Crash Test Dummies version of "Peter Pumpkinhead" was a cover haha. I like the original more, which is why I nominated it instead of the version I'm more familiar with. I've actually heard "Too Shy" quite a few times before, but never knew the group's name. Now I do!

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
Honestly I'm not a huge fan of either of these.

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
"Dragula" always reminds me of Big Shiny Tunes 3 haha. Do they still make those compilation CDs? Do people even still buy CDs? Despite the nostalgia that "Dragula" has, I'm just really digging this "Mojo" song for some reason.

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
I only ever hear the same two songs from Queens of the Stone Age, so it's nice to hear something different even if it's not getting my vote here.

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
Even though both of these are my nominations, this isn't even remotely close. "Weird Science" is a song that is almost always stuck in my head. I unashamedly love Oingo Boingo.

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
That first song is very strangely familiar, though I have no idea where I would have heard it before. I see that pahak has said the same thing. Maybe it was used in a film we both saw? I do like the sound of "Trackpounder", but it felt like I was waiting for the song to start, and it never did.

It's hard to dismiss Oingo Boingo. For me it's because they are monster musicians and always creative, even if a lot of their stuff borders or totally nosedives into silly and cheesy. Bartek is a force of nature with his phrasing on guitar (that explaisn why Elfman has him conduct his film scores)

Re: The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

R1D1

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down - this just no match for me

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night - guess im just not really into banjo country fit with horror something like that

XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead - nice match, first really catchy but the 2nd got better allegory

Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll - my mood is for the 2nd

Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator) - not really into the both

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw*- never really interested with the stone age but this is a good one

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science*- not really

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori*- well, the 2nd isnt bad either :)

resopamenic 10-14-18 10:26 PM

For our mofos that feel familiar with kamattechan's, im not really sure myself if this rip off or has uncanny resemblance with other song, but probably u guys also had heard it from attack on titan season 2 ED.

lenslady 10-14-18 11:10 PM

Hey there @cat_sidhe- I don't really understand how these mofo tournaments work. So I may be jumping the gun by posting a song without registering or signing in first: but I couldn't resist sharing this moldy golden oldiie. And if I've disregarded protocol here, when the song is done, you can simply
make my post disappear like the Invisible Man, or Dracula facing a string of garlic bulbs. Meanwhile- I hope this gives you ghoulish delight.

I don't watch Attack on Titan. My room mates do, but not at a volume where I'd hear it.

ROUND 1
DAY 1

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
Not that much in it which surprised me a little

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
Second was alright but I do have a soft spot for that particular MJ album

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
Best thing Limahl ever did imo and I struggle with XTC outside of some of their earlier chart stuff

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
Like both, preference is for mine own though

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
Second's simply far fresher and Dragula's a bit played out for me

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
Decent Jacksons track - easy enough choice this time

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
Love Alice but that's not one of his better tracks imo

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
The second grew on me and gets my vote here

Captain Spaulding 10-15-18 04:29 AM

Round 1 - Day 1

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
(I'm really into the Gothic Americana sound of Heathen Apostles. Listening to "Death's Head" is like wandering into a western frontier town that's been overrun with demons and witches. A hillbilly baptismal with Lucifer at the helm. The second song, "Drink It Down," sounded too cacophonous for me, like the music's piled on top of itself and is suffocating the song as result; plus the vocals were a tad annoying.)

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
(Love MJ and that's a very good song, but I gotta go with the drunken ode to lycanthropy. Down a frosty beverage and howl at the moon. No silver bullets allowed in this tavern.)

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
(It's all about the chorus in "Too Shy." Anytime I hear it, I find myself randomly singing it throughout the day, often against my will. That bass is deservedly iconic as well. "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead" is a pleasant listen, but nothing about it stands out to me.)

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
(Good match-up. I have a soft spot for female rockers, and I like the fun energy of "Cemetery Girls," even if the song sounds overly familiar despite never having heard it before. I could immediately tell that "Hangman's Hyll" featured greater musicianship, but I felt that the vocals were holding the song back. That opinion changed around the halfway mark when the vocals became harsher and raspier, which better suited the emotion of the song. Kick-ass track. Listened to it twice. Perfect soundtrack for any last stands on the battlefield.)

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
(Love Rob Zombie, love "Dragula," love the album on which it appears. The second song was just okay for me. Despite being somewhat of a stoner, I've never been that into stoner-type songs.)

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
(Like seemingly every Queens of the Stone Age song I hear, I find "Turnin' on the Screw" sonically interesting without actually enjoying the song all that much. Don't think I've ever heard "Torture" before but I really dug it. Catchy and atmospheric. That music video is certainly "spooktacular.")

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
(Thought I was going to hate "Weird Science," but I ended up really enjoying it. Love Alice Cooper, and the Jason connection is fun, but lyrically and musically it sounds like he spent about two minutes on this song.)

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
(Both are creepy, but the first song genuinely unnerved me. I have no idea what she's saying, and the melodic, lullaby-like vocals and the sunny music video don't really speak to the demonic undertones this song gave me. Need to put these lyrics into a translator because I'm pretty sure this chick just sang about wanting to boil my innards and rape my soul.)

ROUND 1 DAY 1

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs L'Arc~en~Ciel - Drink it down
As far as spookiness goes, the first wins in a landslide. Good song, too

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs Graveyard Train - Bit by a Dog
Workin' Day and Night is not a spooky song. At least not until it was featured in the Making of Thriller and it became synonymous with Thriller. One of MJ's coolest jams

Kajagoogoo - Too Shy vs XTC - The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead
I like Too Shy, but the second I've never heard before and I really liked.

Schoolyard Heroes - Cemetery Girls vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
They both sound good, but the first is sung by a girl, and I dig it

Rob Zombie - Dragula vs Peeping Tom - Mojo (Feat. Rahzel & Dan The Automator)
Rob Zombie needs to win this tourney. Especially with a kickass song like Dragula. There, I said it

Queens of the Stone Age - Turnin' on the Screw vs The Jacksons - Torture
The video to Torture used to creep me out when I was young, especially the part with the eye in the hand. Great song, too

Oingo Boingo - Weird Science vs Alice Cooper - (He's Back) The Man Behind the Mask
Both songs are so good in a cheesy 80's way. The second is far more superior when it comes to spookiness to Weird Science, which is just funny

Shinsei Kamattechan - yugure no tori vs Tonbruket - Trackpounder
The second was more elusive.

@Captain Spaulding pick another from your vault of vile.

I've had "Devil Woman" stuck in my head since watching I, Tonya a few weeks ago. Surprised it had won a tournament, but there's been approximately 500 of those things now, so who can keep up anymore?

Oh well. Replace it with Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet

Also, don't worry, I fell prey to that too by letting my ipod choose.

ROUND 1
Day 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine
vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
Tough one, I liked both. The second (love the movie btw) just got a bit repetitive towards the end. I can handle repetitive, but it depends on what it is. Here it got a bit long in the tooth. The first quite cock rocky. But I'm drinking wine so it went down a little smoother. Wish I had a pool cue. I would put balls in holes and play cue guitar! **** YAAAAAAAAAAAAAS!

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
Ooooh double whammy! Like a bit o' Marilyn, pretty much hate Cradle of Filth.

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
Guys, I still can't handle Babymetal! :bawling: It's all good until the singing comes in and then there's not enough acid in the world that can make me think that's ok. .
https://gifer.com/i/XkI6.gif
I do like that Monkees song though.

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
First was ok. Second wouldn't have been my pick for a White Zombie song, but hey, ipod chose. I honoured that ****. I prefer my ipod random choice here. :D

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party - Crasher-Vania
I did enjoy the second, but I loved the first.

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - constantinople
I love love LOOOOVE creepy assed The Residents. Like I said, I've seen them live. They make me sick to my stomach.

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
****yeah SWAAANNNNS....nothing's more wrist-slittingly depressing as Swans.
I BOW DOWN!

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku 『lose control』 vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
I can't really get into this L'Arc~en~Ciel thing. I've tried, though. The second is definitely more my kind of thing.

pahaK 10-15-18 03:29 PM

ROUND 1 - DAY 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
Personally I'm not into either Christ or cocaine but the song is definitely better of these two. The second one was pretty boring.

Cliff Richard - Devil Woman Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
Devil Woman is OK but I'd rather give my roses to Devil's whore. A Gothic Romance is perhaps the best song on perhaps the best album so for me it's an automatic choice. The change changes nothing, Tourniquet is pretty good song but there's no song in this tournament I'd vote over this CoF.

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
I love Babymetal. It's one of the few cheerful music acts I listen to. The Monkees isn't my cup of tea and I'd prefer chocolate anyway (this is a lie, btw, but it felt like a good pun).

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
Didn't like either. First one tries to put me to sleep and other is just kinda annoying with its Hetfield imitation.

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party - Crasher-Vania
Another weak pair. The latter had some decent jokes and it didn't last too long.

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - constantinople
I have no idea what the second was so I'll play it safe and go with my own nomination. Tarot's song goes on for little too long but otherwise it's really good.

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
While Baron Frankenstein isn't the best song of the album (there's the whole album on Youtube but very few individual songs so I had to go with it) it's immensely better than the competition which was super dull.

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku 『lose control』 vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
First was alright. Some male rock vocals in Japanese sound somehow odd to me and this is one of them (no idea why exactly or why I don't have this issue with female vocalists). The second one was ruined by just traditionally terrible vocals.

SURVIVORS
of
DAY 1

CosmicRunaway 10-15-18 05:15 PM

It didn't occur to me until just now, but "Crasher-Vania" is technically by Starbomb and not Ninja Sex Party, but Starbomb is just the two members of NSP + one other person, so, it's not that big a deal haha.

Round 1 | Day 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
I like What We Do in the Shadows a lot, but I'm not really a fan of that song on its own. I wouldn't have nominated it if it wasn't associated with the film, and honestly I really only went with it as a last minute replacement for another song.

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
I've never really been into Cradle of Filth. They had one song I kind of liked, but I don't remember what it was called. "Tourniquet" is not my favourite Marilyn Manson song but it easily gets my vote here.

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
I kind of love whoever these Babymetal people are. At first I was like, no no no, please just dance and not say anything, but I like the actual singing parts. It's a bit repetitive, but I dig it. They stole the vote away from the Monkees.

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
The first one is alright, but a little slow. Like most White Zombie songs, I really like the music but not the vocals in "Grindhosue (A Go-Go)".

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party/Starbomb - Crasher-Vania
I don't expect a comedy song about Castlevania to go over that well, but I think it's a lot of fun, and I always get the choruses stuck in my head. I like the melody for "Walk Like A Zombie", but I'm not a huge fan of female vocalists, so it's not really my cup of tea. MEDUSA YOU SHE-BITCH, I'LL SEE YOU IN HELL.

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - constantinople
"Things That Crawl at Night" felt like it was building up to something else...but it never really got there. I liked it well enough anyway though. Unfortunately I found the second one a bit grating and ended up turning the volume down quite low. I vastly prefer the They Might be Giants song with a similar name.

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
Is "A Hanging" a cover, or was it covered by someone else? The lyrics seemed very familiar but I've not heard that song before. It's a bit too repetitive for me.

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku 『lose control』 vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
This is one of the L'Arc~en~Ciel songs I know! The verses are not the best, but overall I quite like it. I was tapping my foot along to the beat of "Death Blues", so even though it's not really my style, it did get me moving haha.

Captain Spaulding 10-16-18 12:10 AM

ROUND 1 - DAY 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
(I echo what others have said about the repetitiveness of "You're Dead." The song's not bad, but it feels far longer than it actually is. The Devil's Blood is clearly heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, so they're right up my alley.)

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
(I'm not a fan of Cradle of Filth, although I have liked a few of their songs and considered nominating one for this tournament. This song is an endurance test and I was ready to tap out long before it pummeled me to death. Manson has been one of my favorite artists since middle school. There are plenty of songs from him that I prefer to "Tourniquet," but I thought this one would fit well with the theme.)

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
(I've never had much use for monkeys unless they're being spanked. My reaction to Babymetal remains a big WTF every time I hear or see them, but at least it's an oddly fascinated WTF.)

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
("Put Your Life on It" is quite a nice song. Very pleasant in that kick-back-and-bob-your-head-to-the-music sorta vibe. Tempted to vote against it for a complete lack of spookiness, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I preferred it to "Grindhouse (A Go-Go)," although I do like the latter as well.)

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party - Crasher-Vania
(Really enjoyed "Walk Like a Zombie," whereas the second song was just annoying. It probably doesn't help that I can barely remember ever playing a Castlevania game, and that would've been all the way back on the NES when I was super young.)

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - Constantinople
(The Tarot song overstayed its welcome a bit, but I liked it. I was weirdly amused by the second song, but there's a strong possibility that I would've ended up in a padded room if it had gone on much longer.)

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
(I like the instrumentation and horror sampling in "Baron Frankenstein," but I don't really care for the vocals. "A Hanging" immediately grabbed me with its apocalyptic sound. Dark, depressing, gloomy. The spookiest song I've heard so far this tournament. I think the gates of Hell just opened.)

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
(This L'Arc~en~Ciel song is a slight improvement on their earlier song, but the warbling vocals are such a turn-off. If the Grim Reaper could play a fiddle, "Death Blues" would be his jam.)

Re: The Spooktacular Groove Tournament

R1D2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine*
Not really

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet*
Another case of "Never really get the appeal" and manson was one those. but i prefer his track more than the 2nd

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate
My former roommate was actually the actual legit fan of babymetal. This track was the one that really stuck on me

White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)*
Both are equally nice. I' ll go with the one that supposedly fit the theme

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie*
Not really. Horrorpop are bit closer to the mine taste

The Residents - constantinople
First one is fine. The Residents is still creep my ass much more

Swans - A Hanging
Fine spookie song by swans

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku 『lose control』
If not for Nostalghia value i probably a bit grew up for this track by laruku, especially edgy moment at the mid-track. I still love them tho' and tetsu bassline still kickin ass, as always. Just be honest i wont never went into typical sound of 2nd track as i remember mentioned the day before

Chypmunk 10-16-18 04:45 AM

ROUND 1
DAY 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
Both are ok without being anything more for me, the first is pretty generic whilst the latter a tad repetitive - I don't mind repetitive though as long as I'm enjoying it and I give the latter the slight edge here

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
Pretty easy choice for me, have always liked Manson and whilst the Cradle Of Filth song isn't terrible the vocals simply don't do it for me and by the midpoint I'm ready for it to end

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
I'm not a Babymetal fan but that one's more tolerable than some of theirs and sadly whilst I used to love The Monkees this track of theirs is imo the epitome of a calculated corporate MOR offering that's technically proficient but ironically given the title has absolutely zero heart or soul

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
Kasabian have never really done much for me and sadly this track is no exception, the White Zombie track is ok and gets the vote this time

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party - Crasher-Vania
Love me some modern 'billy' whilst I've never been a gamer and apparently have no sense of humour

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - constantinople
Quite liked the first and though the second was short and to the point apparently I have no sense of adventure either

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
I'd have voted for Warfare over a few in this set and Swans are very much an acquired taste so prolly won't go through but it's a beautifully oppressive track and an easy vote for me

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku 『lose control』vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
I'm mixed on the L'Arc~en~Ciel vocals - I quite enjoy when they are David Sylvian-esque, not keen when they are not though - but The Dead Brothers is far more my type of jam anyway and gets my vote

cat_sidhe 10-16-18 02:30 PM

While we're waiting for @mojofilter to vote, I'm putting up..........................

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na

pahaK 10-16-18 04:04 PM

ROUND 1 - DAY 3

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon
Not a fan of either. The latter has pretty good verses but I didn't like the chorus. Mr Bungle has nothing good.

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Two best songs of this round in a same pair. Screw you random.org! It's a tight one but I must choose my own nom.

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
First is pretty weak J-pop with horrible "English" intro. Second is OK and gets little extra bonus for properly telling a story.

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
I'd probably make better music than The Shaggs I can't play any instrument. Funkadelic isn't that good either but it doesn't have to be to win this pair.

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Didn't like the first at all and the second is one of the better Boss songs.

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
Neither is very good but I'll vote first because it has a story and the second one has so dull and monotonous drumming.

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
I'm going to surprise everyone (me included) by voting the hip hop song. That might actually be the first of its kind I liked.

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
Didn't like the first at all. Second is quite good with lots of stuff happening.

Chypmunk 10-16-18 04:11 PM

ROUND 1
DAY 3

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon
Not crazy about the Mr Bungle track, it could have developed into something alright but didn't seem arsed about whether it did or not, I'm no fan of either of the Gallaghers but the High Flying Birds track was a pleasant enough listen and takes this one easily for me

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Thought the Argentum track was decent initially but after the first couple of minutes it started to meander and finally devolved into a rather mundane and boring elongated outtro, Bang Bang was on my list to nom at some point and I see no reason to vote against it here

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
I'm just so not the right audience for the first so it's an easy vote for mine own here

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
A very, very, very, very close call .......................................... not

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Gabriel is generally hit and miss with me - Spank Shock The Monkey sadly drifts more toward 'miss' than 'hit', Springsteen's Dancing is a little bit played out for me but still takes this one fairly easily

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
Low is a perfectly decent track but as I've also had to cross Betty Bones off my 'nom sometime' list I'm afraid the opposition has to be better than just 'perfectly decent' for me to cross it out twice in one evening

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
Sorry but don't like either .... "ip dip doo, doggy did a poo..."

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
The first is a blast from the past that I've not heard for ages and whereas I don't mind the second musically I'm really not keen on the vocals

CosmicRunaway 10-16-18 05:02 PM

Round 1 | Day 3

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon
"Backstrokin'" was quite interesting, if a bit short. I like the second one a bit more than the Oasis songs I've heard.

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
The first one is not really my style. I like Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang" more than the original, since the tone seems to suit the lyrics better.

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
While listening to "Forbidden Karma", my room mate sang out to ask what anime I was watching haha. The other song was alright, but not exactly my style.

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
The picture used as a backdrop to the "It's Halloween" youtube vid is exactly how I'd imagine the band looked if I had only heard the song. I didn't find it too bothersome at the start, but as the song progressed, it stated to give me a headache. Those sounds just don't work together for me.

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
I'd never seen the music video for "Shock the Monkey" before, so that was an interesting watch haha. I'm a little tired of Spingsteen (all the old people here absolutely love him so his music plays everywhere all the time), but I do still like this song.

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
While I don't listen to Lenny Kravitz, I don't dislike him or anything. He doesn't get my vote here though since the beat of "Betty Bones" had me moving in my seat a bit for the first half.

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
I've never really been a fan of McCartney, or the Beatles either to be honest. This new song hasn't really changed my mind but I'm going with it over "Forever Close My Eyes" though, because I just can not get into hip hop at all.

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
This is definitely the hardest decision so far. I used to be a big fan of Gackt back in high school. My mom quite liked him too, actually haha. I still have a few of his CDs at her house somewhere. "Lu:na" was one of my favourite songs of his, though there are some slight differences between this version and the one I remember, though nothing major. I quite like "Just What I Needed" as well, and that's a song that I'd probably put on my mp3 player now. I'm giving my vote to Gackt though, since it's thematically more appropriate.

resopamenic 10-17-18 03:46 AM

R1D2

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin'*
decent bungle. Both just equally passable to me

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana*
Not my usual jam so feel it tad too long. Prefer more than bang bang

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma*
Captain steel recommend me this before and since somehow this fit theme xD. Popular idol song usually really lack of beat but this quiet an exception. The 2nd just feel as typical generic sound that usually friend of mine would often played next room

The Shaggs - it's Halloween*
The shaggs is like ed wood or tom wiseau would be in music. It's so bad yet so good with some goddard-esque mishap on it. Funkadelic has good song, just conventional one.

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey*
Not really interested with pete gabriel solo work, But it's just no brainer against springsteen

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones*
Both were nice. Lenny just too passable

Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
Mcartney is like being preachy and ironically shove you with his own agenda while these dalek has this sage like, nihilistic vibe

Gackt - Lu:na
I never really fan of gackt, even i think in his time in malice mizer. Not help his life persona has this kanye west-esque. Not that them both got similar attitudes or negative public images but somehow both were aligned, in such cringe worthy ways. from some that i had heard, most can be miss with few has impact. still remember at junior high to just randomly buy anime ost compilation songs at record shop, to found this unconventional enka-esque rock vocal by him lol. This was the most memorable one.
The cars itself was in long list for artists I have yet but want to check. Likely will look more of them after this.

Captain Spaulding 10-17-18 07:47 AM

ROUND 1 - DAY 3

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon
(The latter feels like a more complete song, but I can't say I cared much for it. Not Crazy about the Mr. Bungle track, either, but there's a slinking quality to it that I sorta dig. Appropriate music to play when stalking someone in the night.)

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
(I like how evil the Argentum track sounds, as if it's being sung by actual demons, but the music doesn't offer enough variance to maintain interest for 6-plus minutes. "Bang Bang" has the potential to win this tournament.)

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
(Hated both of these, to be honest. The first had me searching for another atom bomb, while the second reminded me too much of every annoying emo kid I've ever known.)

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
(The first sounds like something I'd hear onstage at a talent show hosted by special-needs children. "Hit It and Quit It" isn't something I'd listen to on my own, but at least it's composed by musicians with actual talent.)

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
(Two overrated artists. The second is more tolerable, even though I'd be okay with never hearing it again.)

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
(Haven't listened to Lenny Kravitz in years, but I do like a lot of his stuff. "Low" is pretty mediocre, though. "Betty Bones" is fun and Halloween-y.)

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
(The first is a bit corny, but I enjoyed it and the song went by a lot quicker than the second, which is lyrically strong, but just isn't at all pleasing to listen to for my personal tastes.)

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
(Have heard the first song a million times, but I've never grown tired of it. I grew tired of the second song two minutes into hearing it for the first time.)

I meant a post comment (or post if you like) that you'll be late. ;) Like I usually to do for you, except once.

But no matter. I know you're busy. I future I'll just wait a full day if it's round end (when it matters most) and post the ones you'd have to break, if that's easier?

I love this song. It comes right after the LOUDEST and probably most intense moment of the album. Then it's all happy to be backstrokin'. Do dat do dat do dat dat do dat... before the stinger at the end. This comes off the album that I had at my #1 in the Albums countdown.

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Killer Nancy Sinatra! I dig her. <3

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
Both of these were new to me. The second I liked more.

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
Hahaha, like the Florence Foster Jenkins of bands - ****ing awful but also kind of awesome. It can't beat Funkadelic though.

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Sometimes I have to listen to a bit of Bruce Springsteen. He's no favourite of mine, but I quite like that song. But I like the Pater Gabriel a lot more. I've always found Peter Gabriel to be quite interesting...especially in his Genesis days.

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
Wow, the beginning of Betty Bones sounds like a Jeff Buckley song. I generally like Rocka/psychobilly stuff. I also like some Lenny Kravitz, and I hadn't heard this song before. This was a tough choice as I liked that one too, it took me surprise as it's smoother pop than I expected. Well produced. Listened to both twice before voting.

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
Dälek's my favourite hip hop band. This is also the saddest hip-hop song I've ever heard. The Paul McCartney song didn't quite grab me.

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
It's been a long time since I heard that song by The Cars, but I'd never heard of Gackt. Kinda of rocking but what's up with the vocals? It's got my attention, but I'll need to get used to those vocals or they're another of those "nice band, shame about the vocals" acts for me.

ROUND 1 - DAY 2

The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine vs Harriers of Discord - You're Dead
Both songs are kickass. I just liked the first a little more

Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet vs Cradle of Filth - A Gothic Romance
Marilyn Manson grosses me out, but I like some of his songs. The second one is not my thing.

Babymetal - Gimme Chocolate vs The Monkees - Heart and Soul
Babymetal are cute. Not a fan of the Monkees

Kasabian - Put Your Life On It vs White Zombie - Grindhouse (A Go-Go)
White Zombie are badass, but I do like that Kasabian song a lot

Horrorpops - Walk Like A Zombie vs Ninja Sex Party - Crasher-Vania
The first one is sweet. The second was kinda annoying

Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night vs The Residents - Constantinople
The first was cool. The second was not.

Warfare - Baron Frankenstein vs Swans - A Hanging
That second one was spooky. Fits the theme perfectly

L'Arc~en~Ciel - Shinshoku vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
Both were good. I dug the second more

mojofilter 10-17-18 01:58 PM

ROUND 1 DAY 3

Mr Bungle - Backstrokin' vs Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - The Man Who Built The Moon
Noel wrote quite a lot of uplifting ****-all attitude infused fist-pumping anthems in his Oasis days, and he sure knows how to write a dark atmospheric song like Man Who Built The Moon too.

Argentum - La Sorella di Satana vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Sinatra's song is one of the coolest most badass songs ever written. It's not spooky per say but it sure is dark.

Shiritsu Ebisu Chugaku - Forbidden Karma vs Blue October - The End
The first one sucks

The Shaggs - it's Halloween vs Funkadelic - Hit It and Quit It
Give me some of that funky stuff. I dig that song

Peter Gabriel - Shock The Monkey vs Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
Shock The Monkey fits the theme more

Hellcat & the Prowl - Betty Bones vs Lenny Kravitz - Low
Low is my new favorite song. That's Michael Jackson howling in the chorus by the way. And the way Lenny beats those drums is cool as hell

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Dälek - Forever Close My Eyes
Paul's song is about Trump and how he pulled the US out of the Climate Change agreement (or what is known as the Paris Accords). Epic tune! Kinda reminds me of the lengthy multi-layered songs from the late 60's Beatles era.

The Cars - Just What I Needed vs Gackt - Lu:na
I'll just go with the song I'm more familiar with

cat_sidhe 10-18-18 09:20 AM

Chypmunk 10-18-18 11:26 AM

ROUND 1
DAY 4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) vs Prince and the Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
It's not Bowie at his finest but still easy enough for me to side against a Prince song that I really don't care much for

Deerhunter - Vox Humana vs The Eagles - Witchy Woman
Love Deerhunter but have to vote against mine own in favour of a classic Eagles track here

Francis Haines - "Return of the Living Dead" Theme vs Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
I'm just not really much of one for themed/scored music in isolation tbh

Coven - Wicked Woman vs Venom - Cry Wolf
Simple choice for me

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
Tough one - big Type O fan but also love early Bauhaus, will give mine own some love as I fully expect it to go out

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
Easy enough choice for me

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
Horrid match-up - love both

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
Easy enough match-up for me

CosmicRunaway 10-18-18 11:33 AM

Round 1 | Day 4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) vs Prince and the Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
Two solid songs, but I love Bowie so this is no contest for me.

Deerhunter - Vox Humana vs The Eagles - Witchy Woman
At the very start of "Voc Humana", am I the only one who expected "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes to play?

Francis Haines - "Return of the Living Dead" Theme vs Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
Walpyrgus reminds me of the music I listened to in the late 90s/early 2000s, though apparently they didn't form until well after then.

Coven - Wicked Woman vs Venom - Cry Wolf
The second song is just not a style I particularly like.

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
I quite like both of these songs and could happily vote for either.

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
Does anyone else occasionally browse the Youtube comments to these songs? An amusing one from the Slayer video is "This sh*ts so heavy I got swole just from listening" haha. "Dead Skin Mask" is pretty good, but I've had "Pet Sematary" stuck in my head on and off since I saw the trailer for the Pet Sematary remake the other day.

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
"Last Rites" sounded strangely familiar, but I don't think I've ever heard it before. "Pumpkin" was alright, but it's not really my speed.

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
"El Diablo En El Ojo" is another strangely familiar song that I don't think I've come across before. I quite liked it, but again it's a bit slow for my tastes.

pahaK 10-18-18 04:35 PM

WORK IN PROGRESS I always forget to remove these :D

ROUND 1 - DAY 4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) vs Prince and the Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
Not that hyped about either.

Deerhunter - Vox Humana vs The Eagles - Witchy Woman
Deerhunter is hauntingly depressing and pretty good tune. The other is fine too but just not enough.

Francis Haines - "Return of the Living Dead" Theme vs Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
I don't usually like soundtrack stuff without the film. Walpyrgus is one of the best new old school metal bands and I really love their lyrics (good stories and clever writing).

Coven - Wicked Woman vs Venom - Cry Wolf
I like Coven a lot but Venom is a special band for me. It's the first band ever I've been a fan of and for years they were the greatest band of all for me. Obviously now I'm aware of their shortcomings but they still knew how to write a damn catchy tunes.

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
Type O Negative has some good songs and this is one of them. Never quite got Bauhaus myself.

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
Speaking about bands I've never got Ramones is on that (long) list as well. Dead Skin Mask is one of the great serial killer songs from Slayer.

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
Hmm... Both are kinda nice but also kinda boring. Maybe slight advantage to the first.

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
Didn't like either too much. First is like a lullaby and I'm not planing to sleep just yet so I vote the second.

Captain Spaulding 10-19-18 12:32 AM

ROUND 1 - DAY 4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) vs Prince and the Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
(Two of my all-time favorite artists. I was literally just listening to Prince before I got online. Gonna vote for the Bowie track since it fits the theme of the tournament, even though I think it's the inferior song.)

Deerhunter - Vox Humana vs The Eagles - Witchy Woman
(I rarely like songs that feature mumbled, muffled vocals, so that was an immediate strike against "Vox Humana." "Witchy Woman" is one of my favorite songs from The Eagles. Don't know why whoever nominated them picked this live version that isn't even spelled correctly on YouTube, but I'm not going to hold that against the song.)

Francis Haines - "Return of the Living Dead" Theme vs Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
(I'm with the others that don't tend to listen to or fully appreciate movie themes when isolated outside of the film. I like the music in "Somewhere Under Summerwind," but I wish the vocals were harsher since the singer's voice sounds more befitting of a tween band.)

Coven - Wicked Woman vs Venom - Cry Wolf
(I really like "Cry Wolf," especially its raw, punk-like attitude, and I would've voted for it over plenty of other songs that have been nominated, but "Wicked Woman" is just too much of a goliath.)

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
(Bauhaus is one of those groups I respect more than I like, although this is a solid track. I used to dislike "Black No. 1," maybe because of the Dracula-like enunciation with some of the lyrics, but I've come to love the song after recently listening to it again. Plus I've always had a fetish for gothic chicks, and this song is basically their anthem.)

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
(Like both, but the Slayer track is on a different level.)

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
(Enjoyed the haunting quality of the first. "Pumpkin" seemed to last an eternity. I'd say it's easily my least favorite song I've heard in this tournament.)

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
(Man, that's two boring ass listens back to back with "Pumpkin" and now this Tindersticks song. I'm lucky I didn't slip into a coma. At least "Twilight Zone" is a great song, making this an easy choice. Love when this song comes on the radio when driving at night.)

R1D4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)*
jojo reference incoming. I dont really dig that prince track.

Deerhunter - Vox Humana
Hmmm... Eagle just not meah

Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
Feel so standard to me but more likely

Venom - Cry Wolf
Nice match. Somehow im on the mood for these venom

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel*
Second song is quiet nice too. It just dont really grip me with that vocal

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask*
i dont want to acknowledge that version of ramones. Slayer definitely slay them this occasion

Tricky - Pumpkin
Way more interesting than the first one.

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo*
Tindersticks is fine. Idk i probably bored out with the typical 80s jam for that twilight zone song

I nominated The Eagles.
It's very hard to find the actual songs by them on YouTube, particularly that song. So, I went with the live version, which doesn't sound all that bad either.

ROUND 1 DAY 4

David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)
vs Prince and the Revolution - I Would Die 4 U
Two great songs. The first one fits the theme more though

Deerhunter - Vox Humana vs The Eagles - Witchy Woman
See how high she fliiiiiies

Francis Haines - "Return of the Living Dead" Theme vs Walpyrgus - Somewhere Under Summerwind
I prefer the song over the theme music

Coven - Wicked Woman vs Venom - Cry Wolf
Both were kinda kickass

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
Second was more captivating

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
Both were kickass. Tough match!

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
The first was more kickass

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
I've always loved Twilight Zone

Bauhaus - Terror Couple Kill Colonel vs Type O Negative - Black No. 1
Ha! Almost picked this song for the last tournament. Love it.

Slayer - Dead Skin Mask vs Ramones - Pet Sematary
I like early Slayer.

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Tricky - Pumpkin
I liked Agent Side Grinder, but I love Pumpkin...Alison Goldfrapp man....

Tindersticks - El Diablo En El Ojo vs Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
I liked the first but I felt like something a bit faster.

Round 2 | Day 1

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet
I had to think about this one for awhile. If this were a different Marilyn Manson song he'd probably get my vote.

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs Oingo Boingo - Weird Science
It is never not a good time to listen to "Weird Science". The song just instantly puts me in a good mood and it will forever get my vote.

Gackt - Lu:na vs Swans - A Hanging
I did find the older release of Lu:na that I used to listen to. Here is a link if anyone cared to listen. It's the music/instruments that sound different. I vastly prefer the older version even though it's not a drastic change. Regardless, I still like this newer one better than its competition this round.

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night
I don't have anything new to say about either song.

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues
Nothing new here either.

Tonbruket - Trackpounder vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
I was lukewarm on it the first time around, but there is something strangely compelling about the vocals in "Hangman's Hyll". I'm into it.

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark vs The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine
Listening to "Christ or Cocaine" again, I like it even more than I did the first time. I voted for it over my own nomination in Round 1, but nostalgia is a powerful beast to be up against.

The Jacksons - Torture vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
I quite like "Torture" (there's a quote to take out of context), but Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang" is beautiful.

pahaK 10-19-18 07:54 PM

ROUND 2 - DAY 1

Not much comments this time.

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs Oingo Boingo - Weird Science

Gackt - Lu:na vs Swans - A Hanging

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues

Tonbruket - Trackpounder vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark vs The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine

The Jacksons - Torture vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
I have a hunch Nancy wins this tournament.

ROUND 2 - DAY 1

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs Oingo Boingo - Weird Science

Gackt - Lu:na vs Swans - A Hanging

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night
(I'm glad that mojo explained the meaning behind "Despite Repeated Warnings," which seems blatantly obvious now that's he pointed it out. I liked "Things That Crawl at Night" the first time I heard it, but it's already grown on me considerably, and it's more my style than Sir Paul.)

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues

Tonbruket - Trackpounder vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
("Hangman's Hyll" is my favorite discovery of this tournament. I'll definitely be listening to more stuff from Tau Cross in the near future.)

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark vs The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine

The Jacksons - Torture vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
(Hate to vote against "Torture," since that's another cool discovery, and that music video is a fun watch, but I think Nancy's going to be crowned the champion of this tournament.)

cat_sidhe 10-20-18 02:13 PM

ROUND 2
Day 1

Agent Side Grinder - Last Rites vs Marilyn Manson - Tourniquet
Prefer the second just a touch.

Heathen Apostles - Death's Head vs Oingo Boingo - Weird Science
I like both songs, but have a bigger affinity for Oingo Boingo.

Gackt - Lu:na vs Swans - A Hanging

Paul McCartney - Despite Repeated Warnings vs Tarot - Things That Crawl at Night

Michael Jackson - Workin' Day and Night vs The Dead Brothers - Death Blues

Tonbruket - Trackpounder vs Tau Cross - Hangman's Hyll
This wouldn't have been my pick if I were to play Tonbruket out of my own choice in a tourney. They're quite...unusual. Out of the ashes of EST after Esbjörn Svensson (RIP) died, and they couldn't be more different.

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark vs The Devil's Blood - Christ or Cocaine

The Jacksons - Torture vs Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Tough one.
