If you're a Sci-Fi fan, these are the films from each year that you must see. A Rodent Countdown Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films |
May as well kick off with the first two then...

Flying Saucer is a bit of a Marmite movie, there's a number of crapfests in this list, but they're still must see movies :D |
1954 |

That's it for a bit. The 50s are done with :)
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Nice idea for a list, everyone knows your a big Sci-Fi fan, so this should be good.
Only seen Invasion Of The Body Snatchers so far, quite recently too, but I think it's a fantastic film  |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I'm hoping it's good :D
Bets are people will be scratching their heads with some of the choices though. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Journey To The Center Of The Earth Invasion Of The Body Snatchers The Blob Invaders From Mars 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Seen em, Enjoyed them all! |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
The Day the Earth Stood Still is just decent: solid enough, but nothing all that special.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob and Journey to the Center of the Earth are all awesome, though. |

Invaders From Mars 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Invasion Of The Body Snatchers The Blob Journey To The Center Of The Earth The original The Day The Earth Stood Still is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films. As I recall, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is another great movie. I haven't seen it in a while though. I'll have to rewatch it again. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is a good movie, but a bit creepy, (which works well for this movie). I liked the original version of The Blob, but it's another movie that I haven't seen in a while. Journey To The Center Of The Earth is another good movie. So far, this is a great list to use as a reference if we do a B movie science fiction and creature features HoF. :) |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I don't know if I've ever been able to sit through Quatermass or not. I think I've seen it all. Invasion Of The Bodysnatchers is brilliant. I have it on my 100.

Time for the 60s... 1960 The Lost World http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...1960Poster.jpg Wiki 1961 Mysterious Island http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...%29_poster.jpg Wiki |
Maybe I should articulate some...
The Day The Earth Stood Still...if viewed with the mindset of someone from the 1950s, with the Red scare being pounded into your head....and THEN you see this refreshing movie that shows us that the unknown is not always something evil and that unbridled fear lives in the hearts of many men, then the film becomes a daring master piece. 5/5 Journey To The Center Of The Earth...This is just a great story line, almost like we're taking the journey ourselves. Interesting characters with the great James Mason and Pat Boone too, oh and the duck. 4/5 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers...This one also works as allegory about the threat of communist infration into American society. People where really scarred of this kind of thing. Well done film. 4/5 The Blob...It sounds like good stupid fun, but it's a fairly well done story. One of the best of the Bs. 3.5/5 Invaders From Mars...Pretty well done film, with more science in it than one would expect. 3.5/5 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea...Not as interesting as it could have been, but Kirk Douglas and James Mason help it out. 3/5 |
1962 La Jetée http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...tee_Poster.jpg Wiki 1963 The Nutty Professor http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._professor.jpg Wiki |

It's your list, but I would have preferred to see The Incredible Shrinking Man for 1957 and The Time Machine for '60. :)
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
They were in the shortlist for those years tbh.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Planet of the Vampires! I love their costumes.
|
I'm stopping for a bit now... 20/65, 1950s and 1960s done with.
I'll kick off the 70s in a little while. 1950 The Flying Saucer 1951 The Day The Earth Stood Still 1952 Untamed Women 1953 Invaders From Mars 1954 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea 1955 The Quatermass Xperiment 1956 Invasion Of The Body Snatchers 1957 Invasion Of The Saucer-Men 1958 The Blob 1959 Journey To The Center Of The Earth 1960 The Lost World 1961 Mysterious Island 1962 La Jetée 1963 The Nutty Professor 1964 First Men In The Moon 1965 Planet Of The Vampires 1966 Fantastic Voyage 1967 Jules Verne’s Rocket To The Moon 1968 Planet Of The Apes 1969 Doppelgänger (Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun) |

Even in genres I'm not a fan of, the 70's shines for me. Plus rep for The Stepford Wives, Logan's Run, Star Wars, Westworld and The Andromeda Strain.
I honestly don't know if I've seen Scream and Scream Again or not. I don't think I have, but some of it sounds very familiar. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I had no idea you were a Sci-Fi nut. When do you find time to watch all of these things with your busy Young Guns schedule?
|
I saw on the TCM Remembers video that Donatas Banionis died this year. He was 90. R.I.P. http://media0.giphy.com/media/iEvZxZayq48M0/200_s.gif

Planet of the Apes, The Stepford Wives, Star Wars and Alien are all thoroughly awesome. Superman is good, but he was always dull as a character and, for as much as I can suspend disbelief, the "science" of the climax makes my head hurt.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Scream And Scream Again is a great film.
Caused a bit of a stir though, people said it's too violent. Underrated movie. Classic cast as well. |

Solaris Scanners I like the remake of Solaris with George Clooney, but I haven't seen the whole movie of the 1972 original version. I've only seen bits and pieces of it. I've never seen Scanners, but many years ago at a sci-fi convention, they showed still pics from movies, and the audience had to guess what movie the pics were from. They showed one pic that looked like a guy's head exploding, and most people yelled out Scanners, but the pic turned out to be from Raiders of the Lost Ark, when the ark is opened. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I liked Alien Nation and, like gbg, I really liked the series, too.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Yeah, The Nutty Professor is borderline but it's classed as Sci-Fi.
It's been called a comedy version of Jekyll and Hyde. All to do with sciencey potions and stuff. |

Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Well, the list is a case of "if you're a sci-fi fan, watch these" kinda thing.
I'd definitely give it a look, regardless of cast. |

|
1992 Freejack 1993 Jurassic Park |
I don't find Jerry Lewis funny either. Blew, the French can have him:)
The Lost World...all I remember of this is someone falls of a cliff, an iguana has a fin glued to it's back and Jill St John. First Men In The Moon...I saw this not so long ago, likeable but Lionel Jeffries was too hyper. Fantastic Voyage...Very cool film, interesting too and it has Raquel Welch. Planet Of The Apes..I love this film! |

I've only seen six of these. I think that qualifies as being insanely behind on Sci-Fi flicks.

I trawled over the 40s and 30s. There's not a great deal to choose from tbh. Some years only have a couple sci-fi films. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Clicked on Galaxy Quest's wiki page and it looks really fun, parody is one of my favorite genres yet sadly there aren't many, I'm happy to have found a new one.

That's the problem I found with pre-50s.
Some years only have a couple and both/all three are pants. There'd end up being a few years with no entries. I found a decent start with 1950. 65 years, 65 films. |

World War Z? Well okay 2013 was a bad year for sci-fi I guess...
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
It was either that or Oblivion... or Elysium... or After Earth... yeah, 2013 was pretty poor.
World War Z is a decent movie though. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, which is why it got the placement. |
I must be further behind on recent movies than I realized. The only movies listed from 2000 on that I've seen are Signs and Moon. I liked Moon, but I didn't care for Signs. I thought the ending was kind of lame.
I really want to see Guardians of the Galaxy, but I haven't found the DVD at the right price yet. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I got Guardians for £10 a couple weeks back. It's worth the 10 notes tbh.

That's about $15 in US dollars, right? That's still too much for me. I'm cheap when it comes to buying DVDs. I buy a lot of DVDs, so I usually wait for them to hit Walmart's $5 bin, or even better, I buy a lot of garage sale DVDs for $1 or less. It might even be on cable TV before I find the DVD, but I'll see it eventually. (I also DVR a lot of movies from TCM and other cable movie channels, and burn them to DVD until I can find the DVD at the right price.) |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Yeah £10 is about $15.
It's the starting price these days for newly released DVDs. Makes a change from years ago when a new release would set you back £20 or £25. Hope you lot enjoyed the list though. I had fun watching all those reps flooding in :D Cheers guys! |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Your 2011 movie should have been Source Code.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I didn't find it that enjoyable tbh.
Jake isn't really a fave of mine either. He was excellent in Prisoners though. |

Why try to turn a nice thread like this into a flame war... don't get it at all. |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
No, Book Of Eli didn't make it... it didn't even get consideration tbh.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I wouldn't say anyone chimes in on other peoples' picks exactly.
It's kinda the point of making a list that people can comment, say what they do or don't like, and what they would have considered in place of the writer's choices. If anything, I like the input... and the rep :D Mark is also a MoFo with more movie knowledge than anyone I've ever met either on or off t'web, so just having him rep my choices, let alone comment, is quite an honour  |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Next up, you need to do a countdown for COMEDIES that you like. I don't know what makes you laugh. Besides me.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Not much makes me laugh.
Doubt I could put together a big list tbh. I did a comedy Top 10 in my "Genres Kinda" thread. 10. Kingpin 9. Caddyshack 8. Ghostbusters 7. Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy 6. The Naked Gun Trilogy 5. Airplane! 4. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 3. Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz (Current Two Of The Cornetto Trilogy) 2. The Big Lebowski 1. Dumb And Dumber |
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
Well, think about it -- and don't include The Big Lebowski.
|
Re: Rodent's 65 Sci-Fi, Space And Futuristic-Fantasy Films
I just thought... I can keep adding to this list as the years go on.
New movie at the end of 2015, end of 2016, end of 2017 etc. If I'm still here, that is. |
