Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
I've spent the past couple days going over what was actually released in 2020... and well, there's literally nothing notable.
Sure, ok, the pandemic smashed a lot of releases and pushed many to 2021 but there's simply not enough actually released in 2020... we had, like, erm... Underwater, Tenet, Sputnik, The Invisible Man... nothing really of any quality to even warrant a shortlist to be totally honest. And to show how bad 2020 actually was... The New Mutants, the 13th movie of the X-Men franchise was released, and I didn't even know until 15 minutes ago that it had even been filmed let alone actually released. I guess if I was pushed to give an answer to 2020... probably Bill & Ted Face The Music simply due to there being nothing else to pick from. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...sic_poster.jpg For the first time... after 70 years worth of movies in this list, a list that I've been running for what, 6 or 7 years now, and 2020 gave us nothing. Bad year. |

Apart from the odd rerun of IT Crowd and Father Ted or if the Snooker is on, I never watch TV tbh, GBG :D

Oh. I watch a lot of TV, but only what's on cable TV. I've missed a lot of recent shows because I don't pay for streaming services like Netflix, Prime, etc. I was hoping maybe there was something new worth buying on DVD. |
Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Getting a shortlist together for this year's top Rodent Pick :)
Like 2020, it's been a little light on the ground for all movies. Let's hope 2022 works out better. So far I got... Free Guy Godzilla Vs Kong Justice League: The Snyder Cut. Yes, I'm counting this as it is a totally different movie to the studio bilge that was churned out in 2017. Anyone wanna throw any gems out for me to consider for 2021? |
Obviously Dune.
Though I haven’t seen them yet, there’s Voyagers and Chaos Walking that came out earlier this year. And of course, The Tomorrow War. Hm. I’m going to have to check my list (yes, I keep a list of movies that come out yearly that I track so I can watch them, have been since 2006). I’ll get back to you shortly. |

Well, 2021 was better than 2020, still a little slim on the pickings though...
But you know what... As both a middle finger to studio interference, and in memory of Autumn: Rodent's 2021 Sci-Fi & Futuristic-Fantasy Movie 2021 https://i.imgur.com/mivdNwh.pngZack Snyder's Justice League |

Re: Rodent's 1950-Present Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movies
Quick bump...
2022 shortlist: Avatar: The Way Of Water (awaiting release) Nope Prey Everything, Everywhere, All At Once The Batman |
Oh man, need to catch up on this list and keep it going...
Better late than never... two in one shot :) 2022: Prey https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...022_poster.png Surprising good movie. I was concerned about the new trope of a 30lb teenager with no experience beating a Predator but the movie manages to not cross that Mary Sue line. Not as good as the first two Predator movies, but definitely better than Pred 3 and 4. 2023: Godzilla Minus One https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ne_Poster.jpeg Took the movie-going world by storm by showing how to make a proper Godzilla movie and showing up the recent Hollywood attempts. Hopefully Hollywood learns from Toho's example, but they probably won't :D |

Hopefully Hollywood learns from Toho's example, but they probably won't :D [/center] Fantastic movie! I'm so glad it won an Oscar tonight. I just watched Scream and Scream Again, as I'm a big Christopher Lee fan and had never heard of it. I really liked how unapologetically bizarre the whole thing was. Going from the jogger in the "hospital", to a dystopian Soviet-esque regime assassination, to the victim of a serial killer in England. Few movies have the guts to be that disjointed. Still, it manages to come together and (shockingly) has a good ending. I really like the list... with one exception. And it isn't Nutty Professor. Absolutely nothing else of merit came out that year. But Dream Catcher? I know you said there would be some stinkers, but Dream Catcher terrible in a way that doesn't even seem relevant. It's like King's greatest hits shoved in s blender with 'Alien'. Why not X2? Terminator 3? I'd even take Paycheck over Dream Catcher. Seriously though, thank you for the recommendations. I'll add a lot of these to my watch list. |

I think with some picks, like Dreamcatcher for instance, I went with underseen or underrated rather than just go for the shoe-ins like I did with Aliens in 1986 and RoboCop in 1987. Some movies, though kinda janky, still deserve a little love, and Dreamcatcher I think is definitely one of those. I mean, talking of 1986... it came down to either Aliens, or TerrorVision... but I went with the must-see on that one, over the one that's a guilty pleasure. TerrorVision is one of those so-bad-it's-good movies. 1987 was between RoboCop and Predator, though we all know Robo takes that fight for me :D Let me know though, @stillmellow if you do get to any of these how you feel about them :) Be nice to see some feedback on my picks from someone who has watched them for the first time based from a recommendation I made :) --- @rambond asking about The Mist over Sunshine... sorry it took so long to reply... yeah, like I've said, it's a case of choosing one over the other in terms of must-see or a favourite, over a technically brilliant movie... or going for something that really deserves a bit of love. In which case, The Mist gets a bit of a bad rap from time to time so if my list gets people watching it, all the better :) |
