Having also written The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Frost/Nixon and The Damned United within the last decade this is a very experienced man in the realm of period films based on true stories, stories that frequently pit two strong characters against each other whether it be David Frost and Ric....

From there, the film gains a bit more complexity - especially in regards to the relationship between Hunt and Lauda and its effect on both men's psyches and mutual livelihood - but it doesn't quite feel like enough to make this film truly transcend its biopic trappings.
