In the opening hour the film comes off sort of like a teen cancer version of (500) Days of Summer, which isn't all that surprising given that Neustadter and Weber were responsible for that film's script as well.

A real turning point in the film, and where it started to really get me, was when Gus uses his Make-a-Wish to get a trip for him and Hazel to Amsterdam to meet the author, Van Houten (Willem Dafoe) of a book that Hazel adores.

The different places where these two young people are is made clear from jump: Hazel wants to talk about what she's going through and Augustus wants to talk about anything but...it was refreshing that even from the first second he lays eyes on Hazel, Augustus doesn't see the oxygen tank or the tubi....
