Not that we would inherit our players from this season next year, but im curious if theres interest in this idea.
Does anyone know the mechanics involved in a Dynasty League?

Do they inherit all the same players year to year unless traded/dropped, or is it a partial draft each year?

Is Yahoo even set up for something like that?

I would be up for something like that. The ones I have played in would keep 5, I’m sure it could be setup however you want. I was in one in the early 2000’s that ran through Yahoo, so it’s definitely possible.

That's up to each league. Dynasty usually implies total roster retention. There are also "Keeper" leagues which are a little less dramatic, where you keep a certain number of players each year, sometimes with additional restrictions or costs. This is simplest with auction leagues, because in those cases you can have a player cost more money each successive year you keep them. I play in a Keeper League with Tim and Dan where we keep six, but each player is on a five-year contract, which is something Tim has to track on his own in a spreadsheet. He does a good job of it, but those kinds of rules usually have to be administered without the help of the league site.

I'm open to it but the main hurdle is owner retention is particularly important, owner involvement has to be very high and I don't think it would work to convert this league into one, so it would mean adding another league entirely, in all likelihood.

Yes.

Well me, you, Sean, and Tim would be for it. Best to just let these posts sit and see if anyone else says they're interested. If there's just a couple people more that wouldn't be enough to change or create one.

Yoda
08-08-24, 01:04 PM
Well, Tim obviously likes playing in them, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'd want to play in another one. He just clears that first hurdle.

The deadline to complete trades in this league is Thursday, Aug 8.

I have only two that never left, Justin Steele & Willson Contreras. Others I traded away, dropped to waivers, traded back for, or picked up again.
...and then there was one.
Dropped Willson Contreras to waivers as he's been cold the past month, and I have to have top tier output at all times from my guys to have a chance against Adam Wonderdraft, and the Fantasy sports Jedi Master.
Onward!

Dear Rays,

Congratulations in your new stadium. Why or how anyone would be stupid enough to spend that much money on a stadium in an area that's proven to not draw fans..... Anyway, now would be a good time to call up Junior Caminero. Let him get his baseball legs the next 6 weeks since we're out of the playoffs.
The fact this would make sense just answers my question. Damn.

6 weeks left. I'm gonna miss FBB, always do. This is sad but the most excitement I feel in a year is when the Fantasy Baseball draft creeps nearer and nearer. I just got a promotion and will be relocating to a beautiful city where should make alot more money, but I'm more focused on whose either streaking or emerging on the wire lol!

Speaking of which, Junior Caminero has gone 1 for 6 so far. Shame! Shame! They should make him walk nude from Tropicana Field to the beach with some medeival nuns walking around him chanting Shame!

Cole Ragans is a better pitcher than Seth Lugo. Just ask the Twins.

Schwarby hit a grand slam, and his batting avg is better than Ohtanis lately. Shohei is channeling Adam Dunne, the 4 balls he hit this week 3 were homers.

Is it me or are there more hitters now that just go up against right handed pitchers?

Glad this season isn't a walkway win for anyone. The way Adam started it looked like it, and then Yoda constructing a roster where 7 of his players were in the preseason top 50 looked like it too. My team seems like Ross Perot from the 1992 election.
If it stays as close as it is lately....well I've no prediction this time.

Oh well. Looks like Junior Caminero is an ONeil Cruz type player. Hopefully he will figure it out the next 6 weeks. Buh bye. Also Shoheis on the bench until he stops going hitless or one hit for every 4 or 5 at bats. Smart moves? Nope, but if nothing changes then nothing changes.

I'd go on about sample sizes too but I've been saying that for years so I give up.

He's been batting .167 the past 2 weeks. Whenever he hits the ball, 75% of the time its a home run, but I'm desperately needing my .Avg needle to move in the right direction. We have 6 weeks left, the rest of the season is a small sample size, but I'm playing him. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. So be it.

Yoda
08-16-24, 12:28 PM
Over two weeks you maybe get 48 at bats, so .167 means he's about 8 for his last 48. If he gets literally one more hit every three days he's hitting .270. So what do those outs look like? Are they popups, or fly outs to the warning track with the wind blowing in? Are they weak grounders or line outs? Doesn't take much over such a small time span. The difference between below average and batting champion over the course of a season is a hit or two a week. That's not perceptible on a day to day or week to week basis.

Two weeks means absolutely nothing, particularly for an established player.

Yoda
08-16-24, 12:31 PM
Also, when you say you "need AVG," what does that mean? It looks like it just means "my ranking in AVG is a bit lower than my other categories." But you're also already five points behind the next spot. Your RBI ranking is higher, but you're also RIGHT behind and RIGHT ahead of people in that category, so RBIs are worth way more to you than hits at the moment. You're also just behind THREE teams for SBs.

Strategy in roto isn't "what categories am I low in?" Strategy is "which categories do I stand to gain or lose the most ground in?" A ranking point in one category is worth the exact same amount as any other category, so it's the relative distance to the teams on either side of you that matters.

One small distinction on the roto thing: it's reasonable to say "I need to focus on AVG/SB/whatever" early in the year, but only insofar as you expect it to produce more points in the long-term. In a vacuum weak categories earlier on tend to have more upside simply because there are more points above you than below, but as the year goes on it becomes more and more about that relative distance.

Here's a good way to think of it: imagine your team AVG is .220, dead last. Imagine the guy ahead of you in second-to-last is hitting .240. Now imagine it's the final day of the season! You can't catch him even if every hitter gets a hit every AB. But imagine you're first in RBIs with 800...and four guys are right behind you at 799.

In this scenario, you're last in AVG and first in RBIs...and yet it still makes sense to prioritize RBIs, because you can't gain points in the former and you can lose a lot in the latter.

It's the exact same idea all year, just less extreme and less obvious, particularly earlier on.

Major League Baseball is toying with the idea of instituting a six-inning-minimum rule for starting pitchers, with several caveats. Jesse Rogers at ESPN reported on the details earlier this week, and noted it would take several years to implement, including trials in the minors beforehand.

https://www.truebluela.com/2024/8/17/24220345/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-starting-pitchers-arizona-complex-league#:~:text=Major%20League%20Baseball%20is%20toying,trials%20in%20the%20minors%20beforehand.

Hopefully a good day for Lugo and Taj. They've had rough going for their last few starts.

Pete Fairchild out again. Thankfully the Marlins new closer was available, otherwise it would have been Rays roulette. Again.

Christian Yelich I see is having season ending back surgery. Hopefully this will permanently correct it as he's always had struggles with his back at times each season. Kershaw too.

Gonna give Junior Caminero another chance since he's at least hitting well, and they say the power is sure to come.

Shohei Ohtani is ranked 10th overall the past 7 days, yet his avg. has been .167 with an obp of .242. He's an enigma.

Right as I you posted this they announced Riley was out for the rest of the regular season.

I think it's a coin flip at this point. If I can pull this out having lost Yelich, Riley, Ryan, Albies, Senga, Musgrove, and half a season of Tatis (as well as a month or J-Rod), I'll be pretty happy. But it's gonna be a struggle.

I've almost maxed my innings so the chances of catching anybody in categories I could potentially catch somebody is slim. I think third place in September is about as good as it's going to get for me and my team will probably drop down a few spots before it's over. Still the best finish I've ever had.

My biggest hitters have gone very quiet lately, which is a shame, as it was looking like I was going to at least put up a fight for a trophy this year, which with the QS stats and good pitching performances flowing over the last week or so. It all has to come together across the entire roster...not just half of it!

I'll be surprised if I win. Just too many injuries. The moment someone comes off the IL another s goes on. And almost all of them after the trade deadline, when there's no way to suitably address it.

It's possible, I see a narrow path and I'm certainly going for it, but it's unlikely.
...and then Jasson Dominguez comes along. GREAT GRAB! He definitely has the potential, high ceiling, etc... to boost 5 badly needed categories in the short time left. Never underestimate the power of the Force.

The fact Adam will probably win this while completely ignoring the Holds category is amazing. I think the last time someone won while having a 1 in a category was Mikeython1 for stolen bases. Adam may have had the best draft ever this season.

Me and Yoda are tied at 2nd place, and have 18 days of Baseball left to overcome an 11 point lead Adam has. Doubtful? Absolutely. lol
Maybe Buxton can do one of those nuclear surges. Maybe this new Encarnacion can play like a first rounder for 2 weeks. Maybe Dylan Crews finally hitting a good average the past 7 days can continue with power. Maybe Tommy Edman can make up for the whole season in 2 weeks. Maybe Ohtani Ohtanis'. Here's hoping (fingers crossed)

Corey Seager out for the year now. No cavalry comin', won't really have been at full strength at any point.

Still possible, but Seager was a significant part of the most plausible comeback scenarios.

The best thing you can do, and this goes for everyone, is find out what categories you may be close to overtaking Adam in and go full boar to finish out the season in them. It would be good. It would be good for me!

Yoda 102.5

Im gonna kill some of the drama because pretty certain Chris has it in the bag. Adam has no innings left, and I cant hit enough baseballs today to make a difference.

Beginning of the season one thing was apparant, Adam had possibly one of the best drafts ever in our Fantasy league. Those first 6 weeks he was solid, but Yoda knew. There was alot of baseball yet to be played. Then Mookie Betts & Mike Trout went down.

Id love to tell you it was Yodas Yodaness that got him in first place for a loooong time after Adams team dropped, but in truth it was mostly us getting him there. I played like I normally do, and many owners followed suit. Tinkering, trading, and to a record setting degree. All the while Chris shook his head, and just accepted some laydown winner trades. Not only was he in first place, but 7 out of 10 players on his offense were in the top 50 preseason, and the other 3 in the top 100. 8-10 weeks into the season he had it in the bag, and with authority.

Then something really unusual happened. I grabbed hold of a squad of pitchers, mostly waiver wire guys (i.e. The 2024 Horn Of Plenty), and went on a pitching tear that was something out of a movie. My weakness became my honeypot of fantasy points. I was grabbing hitters too off the wire who will go high in the draft next year. I actually went from last place with no hope in sight, transformed my team, and was climbing the rankings. The kicker is when Yoda took on injuries. I cant say it was alot in a short time, but alot over a long period of time. I got to first place.

Then the magic died. My pitchers started tanking games, I had dropped too many players to waivers that had bad spurts yet still were valuable, and traded away the rest. Thus began a three way dogfight between me, Adam, and Chris that lasted till the end of the season.

Chris won because 1. he knows how to play Fantasy Rotisserie Baseball better than all of us, and 2. He never quit. As hopeless my team looked those first 2 months, his looked almost as bad after the injury waves, but he made the internal decision to just do his best and again it was enough.

This was easily my favorite season playing so far. Pretty confident I had more fun than anyone, and if I could harness my "fun" Id be much better at this. I play Fantasy Baseball like someone plays a video game, but it isnt one.

Congratulations Yoda, and a great season to Adam too. Im proud to be on the podium with yall this time. Salute!

I have no idea what I need, and honestly have few options. Poor Adam slotted in a bunch of pitchers for today, but his inning limit was capped days ago. If he had only had 2 or 3 Hold guys this season, and just left them in his RP slots he would have won easily.
Not judging, just wincing. Ive had countless winceworthy moments this season. All I know to do this last day is slot as many as I can. Need to to get 6 Holds, yet have everyone on my roster hit like Ohtanis best day, but ONLY in innings 1-5, or the 9th :)

Ouch. I was wondering cause his offense isnt at the rate to move a needle. He doesnt know this or he wouldnt have bothered slotting them in.

Yoda

He actually had an outside chance at winning (or tying for first) if the offense had a big day. He would've needed like five homers and a good chunk of RBIs. Not likely, but not implausible either, so he was right to load up on whoever he could find. Not like there's any downside, either.

Well, would you look at that!! ;)

Anyway, congrats to Chris for yet another clinic on how to play this game. I made a couple of critical errors that are still haunting me today as the season is closed out.

Dropping Brent Rooker - Really stupid move, as this guy would have helped my team big time with counting stats. I even raved about him early in the season and told people to play their A's. Sure, we know this guy, he always falls off and goes on big slumps, right? Not this year.

Relief - I still can't get my head around how to properly balance saves and holds, so I careen wildly back and forth, ending up near the top in one cat and the near the bottom in another.

Drafting old codgers - I thought I could squeeze another good season out of Goldy, but he was underwhelming the entire time. He was slugging enough to not ever really become droppable, but he ended up dragging my team down over time.

Anyway, fun stuff! As relentless as always, and it will be nice to take a break until next season, but I will still miss checking in with my team every morning.

Onward!

Just copying and pasting "Congratulations Yoda!" at this point. It seemed like this year took a little work though didn't it? It was an exciting finish, for sure.

With this group of players, I feel good with a top 5 finish and being in third as late as late August. I screwed up chasing QS about midway through the season (he's pitching against Chicago? How can he not get a QS? 5 2/3...****!) and burned through my innings which ultimately cost me a couple spots.

Believe this or not - I just noticed for the first time, after sixteen years playing in this league, there is a "Overall Standings - Distance from the Competions" chart at the bottom of the Full Standings page. I was just too lazy to keep constant track of the stats manually for what I needed, and just focused on trying to strengthen my weak ones. Until Chris told me to protect my strong ones too, so I tried to keep an eye on that some at the end of this season. Yeah.
