I see I'm the king:eek: of voting for older movies:D I don't think anyone has more mid to early 20th century comedies on their ballot. I have 14 from the 1930s to the 1960s. But I wonder who's second for most older comedy votes?

1930s - 3
1940s - 4
1950s - 2
1960s - 5
1970s - 4
1980s - 2
1990s - 3
2000s - 2

Thanks for the tag, I appreciate it, but I’m having a horrible, manic time at work, and besides I’ve barely seen 20 comedies, let alone 100. I can give it a try, but boy, will it be a lame list.
100?! Ballots are only 25 max anyway. Surely you've seen 25.

Partial ballots accepted (minimum 10), though the score will be correspondingly diluted to.

I promise none of this is as strenuous as people seem to think.

Ha, yes, I always confuse the rules on these things, my bad. Okay, I’ll give it a try. I have seen 25, yes, though not sure how representative these are of the wider comedy tradition out there. But will get to it now, thanks.

Intuitively, what do we think? That people disproportionately favor comedies that came out in their 20s, more or less?
For me, it's comedies that came out during my teens and 20s.
I think a lot of my favourite comedies are films I saw in my teens and 20s, but that doesn't necessarily equate to when they were first released.

EDIT: Also, my range of decades is like . . . nonexistent. Which I noticed when I was making the list but, you know what? I listed the movies I find the funniest. Even if the distribution makes it look like I've never watched anything made before the moon landing.

I say...

I won't submit a ballot for this. Since the announcement, I've watched two or three comedies, and don't feel like I could make a ballot I'd be happy about.

And as a clarification, I rarely watch comedies, and while there are a few that I really like, it's been ages since I last saw most of them and I have no idea how to rank them. Also, figuring out 25 "vote-worthy" comedies would be a Herculean effort for me, and I don't want to submit a partial list (in seemingly random order, nonetheless). I'll keep my eyes on the countdown, though, and maybe even comment every now and then.

This is another update on the totals for the decades breakdowns that everyone has been posting. (And again, I'm wrapping them in spoiler tags just in case anyone doesn't want to know the totals so far.)

1920s = 17
1930s = 38+1+1 = 40
1940s = 25
1950s = 21+3 = 24
1960s = 55+1+1 = 57
1970s = 99+3+5+2 = 109
1980s = 157+11+8+5 = 181
1990s = 148+7+6+5 = 166
2000s = 101+2+1+5 = 109
2010s = 60+1+3+4 = 68
2020s = 3

1920s - 3
1930s - 4
1940s - 2
1950s - 1
1960s - 4
1970s - 5
1980s - 1
1990s - 4
2000s - 1

I will admit that I had the least amount of fun assembling this list as opposed to the lists I created for the other countdowns since comedies aren't a genre of film I particularly care for, but I still managed to finish it and I'm curious to see the results.

SpelingError, I didn't add your decades numbers into the totals this time because you already posted them here (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=2303745#post2303745), so they're already in the totals.

Most of mine were from the 70’s and 80’s, with the edge going to the 80’s. I had a few from the 20’s and 30’s.

I need to watch more screwball comedies of the 30’s and 40’s, as well as dig into Chaplin, The Marx Bros, Fields, and Keaton’s filmography more. What little I’ve seen I’ve enjoyed.

I have a box set of Harold Lloyd staring at me that I actually plan to start up this summer, as well.

It’s going to be skewed towards the 80’s and more recent films, but I’d be happy if we have sown representation there

1. 91
2. I think we need to look no further than The Naked Gun... which will tell us it's Platoon.
3. 25. Whoever it was that put Heathers at #1-25.

Honestly though, I kind of don't want to hear guesses for #2. I have no concept of what other people voted, and if people start weighing in, it'll take the surprise out for me - for whatever that is worth.

is it a proper kick? or more of a punt/shove, in order to reposition this pig for a point-based progression? are there teammates? if so, are they clearing a path for the pig or receiving the pig from my kick? will the pig become airborne, or are we restricted to keeping it grounded? is there an opposition team? obstacles? is there a net, goal marker, or even a small hole that we're supposed to land the pig inside of? can i bring my own pig? are there regulations to pig size, weight, or even breed?

thanks in advance,

Looking more likely I'll mostly get my end of things done tomorrow, which means we'll need another day or two past that. I'd say end of the week is the earliest plausible time, so very solid chance it'll just be Monday, too.

I know everyone's anxious to start, but this is like releasing a video game everyone wants to play when it's still buggy. As annoying as the wait is, I promise it would be more annoying if I cut too many corners.

I will definitely try to make it this week if I can, though.

I played Cyberpunk 2077 day one on a last gen console, so something being clearly unfinished and buggy is not exactly a deterrent to me haha.
You may be unsurprised to hear that's exactly what I was thinking of when I wrote that. :laugh:

There's always a tension there: people are mad a thing is delayed, but also mad if it's not as good as they hoped. Just how it goes, I get it. But in general, if it can be earlier and messy or a little later and good, I opt for the latter.

So, I'll say that I hope that:
the director that appears the most is Woody Allen
and the lead actor who appears the most is James Mason (implausible, I know!)

I think my prediction is Gilliam's going to get three. I suspect they're all going to a little low due to vote splitting (I think there'll be a number of ballots that have two of his movies, just a lot of variations on which two). I don't have a sense if that's going to be the most entries or not though.

I guess the best bet is pick someone who had their most famous and prolific era in the 70's and 80's based on those earlier tallies.

Or for most, I'll just say, "screw it, the Coens."

I don't have a sense on actor, and just want to say Bill Murray.

It's always hard to guess how people go on the Holy Grail vs Life of Brian. And there might be people who go with both of those Pythons, but don't lost Brazil, which is tonally a very different movie.

Life of Brian will surely get in, but it was directed by Terry Jones, not Gilliam.

As for Brazil, I agree that the distinct one might be a factor in it not getting in, but I think it has a chance at the backend.

Regardless of what you think about them, I can see both with at the very least a handful of entries...

There's Something About Mary
Mystery Men
Meet the Parents
Zoolander
The Royal Tenenbaums
Dodgeball
Anchorman
Tropic Thunder
Austin Powers
Old School
Elf
Step Brothers

I don't necessarily agree with a lot of those – Tenenbaums is more drama, Mystery Men seems like a long shot, and I don't like all of them – but putting my ear to the ground, those are the ones that generally get more love.

While we wait, let’s talk about movies we decided to cut off of our own individual lists, or movies we just plain forgot to include. It isn’t spoiling anything, as it isn’t revealing my own list, so I don’t see any issue.

Animal House. Finally watched this the other day. I had avoided it for so long because I wasn’t sure it could live up to its reputation, and honestly? It’s just as funny as I’ve been told. Yeah, it’s crude, but it supposed to be. Not for the easily offended I guess. Doubt it needs my help though.

JoJo Rabbit,because there were others I felt were more deserving and it probably didn’t need my help.

Kung Fu Hustle. I mistakenly cut this off and realized I didn’t mean to. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking. It was on my list originally and then….somehow vanished when I started trimming it. Didn’t even realize I had done so. Damn.

MASH….simply because I forgot about it and realized afterwards it definitely should have been in there. Probably doesn’t need my help though.

Most of my cuts were due to an initial list that was around 100 movies. I cut lesser known, old comedies as they most likely wouldn't make the countdown anyway. I wanted my votes to count. A few of those I cut were:

Zero Hour! (1957) not even made as a comedy but one of the funniest films I've seen, thanks to the stone serious Sterling Hayden. I think some know this:
This film is parodied in Airplane! (1980), so much so, that the producers of that comedy bought the rights to this movie and used some of the dialogue word for word.
Zelig (1983)...funny Woody Allen mocumentary, but I already had other Allen comedies on my list and no room to spare.

The Silencers (1966) I thought this spy spoof with Dean Martin as a swinging secret agent was hilarious, but who else has seen it? More importantly would anyone else vote for it?

Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Back to the Future (1985)
I figured others would vote for these and get them onto the countdown without my help.

The King of Comedy (1982)...My favorite Martin Scorsese film but to me it's much more drama than comedy.

Without Reservations (1946) A funny comedy with John Wayne, yup the Duke made a comedy and he's good too, so is Claudette Colbert🙂 I love this film but I knew it wasn't getting enough votes even if I did squeeze it onto my already crowded ballot.

I'm just kicking myself for forgetting to at least include Greenberg (speaking of Ben Stiller), Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe, or American Psycho on my short list for consideration.

The first two would have definitely made my final list if I had thought of them (I might like my comedy a little caustic and dark). I don't know if American Psycho would have made it, but it would have been in contention.

Some movies I didn't consider:
Daisies, I think I already said why.
And despite of those painful omissions above, I didn't really consider Sunset Blvd, Ace in the Hole, or All About Eve, because in my mind they exist as dark, biting melodramas as opposed to dark comedies (though I know some people view them as dark comedies).

Yeah, a few pages back, I think I listed it as the weirdest, I don't think of it as a comedy for... unclear reasons. Because every descriptor of it I'd use (minus political or social commentary), could be interchangeable with a Marx Brothers movie. But for some reason, when I think of, "I want to laugh," or, "I want to put on a comedy," it just doesn't come to mind.

I think for Ace in the Hole, because I've scratched my head on how the comedy label is supposed to get applied, is the premise of the fair that springs up could be viewed as a darkly comical farce, but I think I need a little more than that for something to register as a dark comedy. If I squint my brain and recollect, I feel like that's maybe a few scenes where someone might laugh.

I pretty much did the same

I'll only list 5 movies that were going to be on my list but decided to take off since they might not make it

Easy A (2010) - A movie about how spreading bad rumors in high school can lead to bad things and when it backfires it turns ugly. High school movies are my guilty pleasures what can I say. It would be nice if this movie makes it but I don't see it making it.

Simpsons The Movie (2007) - As much as I love the tv show, I liked the movie as well. This was a good movie put on from the people that made this film and great tv show. No chance in hell that this movie makes the list lol.

There's Something About Mary (1998) - A funny Ben Stiller comedy about a guy that hires some other guy to track down this girl that is the love of his life. This film is filled with laughter, the cast did a good job in this movie. Maybe just maybe it makes it.

Anger Management (2003) - This would be more of a guilty pleasure comedy for me since I thought it was a nice movie to watch if you're look for a good laugh. I can't see this movie making it.

Heathers (1989) - This silly revenge movie was a weird one but in a good way. Also Winona Ryder and Christian Slater made this movie amazingly humorous. This might just make it.

Most of my cuts were either comedies I haven't seen in a long time (The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap), films that I feel lean more towards other genres (When Harry Met Sally, Back to the Future), or films that I felt didn't need my help so I pushed them out in favor of other less favored ones. On this last category, the two cuts that hurt me most were Shaun of the Dead and The Cabin in the Woods, two horror comedies that I love.

Two that I had in the vicinity, and wanted to acknowledge some way were Barking Dogs Never Bite and In The Loop. Great comedies both of them.

Oh geez. I totally forgot about that too!
I think it’ll still appear, but man…what an oversight on both of our parts. 🙁

You didn't think Airplane was funny, but you thought Zero Hour! was one of the funniest films you've seen? :confused:

Two days after the ballots ended, I watched The Palm Beach Story (1942) for the first time. If I had seen it earlier, it would have definitely made my top 25.

I considered putting Robocop (1987) on there, but decided it leaned too much into other genres to qualify (at least in my mind).

Personally I was surprised by how quickly I cut the Edgar Wright movies out of my ballot, it seems like I somewhat outgrown them.

Actually, it is very interesting what is the geographical distribution of all these 88 or 89 participants. ...By country, state, city...

Would you mind sharing yours?
Is there someone from continental Europe or Latin America?
Is there someone from some other not usual for the forum parts of the world?

Well, unfortunately the poll has very low geo distribution.
From the MoFo map and people who responded here, there are only three voters from continental Europe and none from Latin America. (Asia and Africa are somehow excluded by default)

While we're waiting on the list to start, I do wanna say that I am officially going for a one-pointer this time. Might surprise you which film that is.

I leaned more towards the older films, although I do have some films made in the last 10-15 years on my list.

5 cuts that I agonized over:
9 to 5
Clueless
Dr. Strangelove
Mean Girls
Trading Places

3 films I can't believe I forgot about:
Heathers
The Cabin in the Woods
Despicable Me

I believe that with the exception of the Animation list I have never "gone" for a one-pointer (the one I did was the unintentionally horrifying Hugo the Hippo, which I was certain nobody else would vote for even as a one-pointer and I wanted to highlight because it scarred me both psychically and emotionally). Having run a couple of these lists I know quite often either placement or making the list at all literally comes down to one point. In a list as broad as this, even more so, I expect.

I think I cut MASH because it is so freaking melancholy at times. And I just straight up forgot Animal House somehow, it would 100 have been on my list.

My list got pretty tough because I was at like 50 movies and having the "how can you cut that one?" debate about pretty much every movie. In the end it all came out looking pretty generic because above all I wanted to be honest.

Wooley
06-12-22, 10:10 PM
Most of my cuts were either comedies I haven't seen in a long time (The Princess Bride, This Is Spinal Tap), films that I feel lean more towards other genres (When Harry Met Sally, Back to the Future), or films that I felt didn't need my help so I pushed them out in favor of other less favored ones. On this last category, the two cuts that hurt me most were Shaun of the Dead and The Cabin in the Woods, two horror comedies that I love.

Funny, all six of those got serious consideration from me but only one made it.

Multi-sport Hall of Famer, Pedigree spokesman, and world-renowned philanthropist, Buddy, the golden retriever, is our first actor to make multiple appearances on the countdown. Personally, I'm not sure why people voted for sports documentaries on a comedy countdown, but this is what happens when you don't set parameters. I knew this was bound to happen when we waived the one-month membership threshold to allow his litters of Air Buddies to submit ballots. Air Bud: World Pup and Air Bud: Spikes Back narrowly missed the countdown, coming in at #103 and #108, respectively.

Hulk Hogan's scathing black comedy about consumerism and the ongoing crisis of kids not saying their prayers and taking their vitamins continues the early countdown domination of 90's political satire.

I'm gonna be fine, no worries there, but I actually do need this time to make sure the countdown goes more or less smoothly and there's really no way to change that. Gimme a few days. :)

It's all good. I'm kind of just joking around anyways, typical Raul fashion.

Given Hulk Hogan's history this GIF has an unfortunate extra layer to it... :shifty:

I'm sure this will crack the top 10 at the very least?
