I love the Criterion poster for The Celebration. It fits the vibes of the film and the Dogme 95 movement really well.

With that being said though, I think the low budget feel of the film works in its favor, so I'm not sure whether a high definition version of the film would help or hinder it. Still curious how it would look though.

I’m hoping for Passion of Joan Arc to take this, not only because rit was perhaps the best film, but because silent films rarely ever compete in the general HOF.

I think that I've probably kneecapped The Passion of Joan of Arc by how high I placed the probable winner on my own ballot. If I had voted strategically instead honestly, I mighta been able to squeeze Joan through.

The Wiz gonna take it and I don't think it will be particularly close.

Last time The Wizard of Oz was in an HoF was in the 5th HoF. It was Raul's nom and came in 7 out of 15 movies, right in the middle of the pack. It'll be interesting to see how it does here.

And Then There Were None

Most of my feelings after the first episode never left. I don't think this miniseries has much to offer that you can't get better versions of elsewhere. Whether it be visuals, music, acting, etc. When something is bad and also long, that's not a winning combination. That's how I feel about And Then There Were None.

Tower

I think this film is mostly great. It touched on a subject that happened a long time ago, so with that distance between now and then can make you think of it archeologically instead of with humanity and emotionally. It didn't dwell on the killer, but instead told the story of the people who acted bravely when it came time for them to act bravely. It never really felt manipulative as documentaries can get. The visuals were whatever to me, I mean, the idea behind it is well done and at times could add to the humanity by switching the visuals in and out to show the real people. The film did well to manage those transitions so as not to be manipulative. The only thing I hated was when it started showing recent shootings and the Cronkite clip where he blamed society for the shooting. I could get into further why I hate the idea of blaming society for the shooting and how the film implies that it also believes it by showing the clip at all. I also didn't like the film cheaply showing brief moments referencing other attacks, as the attention was taken away from the victims of this particular tragedy. I just didn't think it was necessary and took me out of the film.

A Separation 154 points. Runaway winner and high on almost everyone's list. I had it in 6th place and I was one of the people that placed it the lowest. Not that I didn't think it was a fantastic movie it was just up against a great group. More than happy about it winning.
Le Trou 138 points. Pussy you came very close to being the first person with two inductees. This was on the top to middle top of a lot of lists.
Plein Soleil 122 points. Another well liked movie. I'm pleased that this came in third place because it shows that members are willing to place a movie high that maybe isn't necessarily about really heavy themes , but is none-the-less a really good movie and certainly a worthy contender. Placed high on my own list.
Unforgiven 118 points. This is where the placements started to vary a lot more, but this one had its share of high placings. I had forgotten how good it is.
Wadjda- 108 points. Besides myself and Thursday this one was right smack dab in the middle of most lists. Miss Vicky had it fairly high too.
Boy's Don't Cry 106 points another one that came in the middle a lot with only one really low placing (I think)
The Wizard of Oz 102 points generally placed really high or really low. It was my number one choice. Those of you who love this movie like I do, just wait for the musical HoF. ;)
Quills - 100 points Some people really liked this but placing really low a couple of times hurt it. Another I placed pretty high.
A Woman Under the Influence 100 points See Above.
Divorce Italian Style 97 points kind of all over the place, but I think it was a generally well liked movie. I can see this being a specialty HoF winner someday.
Ordet 97 points Such a low placing for such a great film, but that is why there are many judges not just one.
Claire's Knee 94 points a polarizing film. It wasn't my cup of tea but I could see the appeal of it for others.
Sideways 84 points. This is a really like able film that maybe just got swallowed up a bit. Still a really good nomination.
The Wages of Fear 77 points something tells me that being in the same HoF as Le Trou hurt this film. I think it's better than it placed, but this was an extremely competitive HoF and I don't think the score reflects the quality of the film.
Bullets Over Broadway 64 points Just not a lot of people's cup of tea. I think Woody Allen is a bit of an acquired taste

Weird order....had I participated I think I would have gone

1. The Wages of Fear
2. Unforgiven
3. Wadja
4. The Wizard of Oz
5. Divorce Italian Style
6. Le Trou
7. A Separation
8. Claire's Knee
9. A Woman Under the Influence
10. San Solieil
11. Sideways

13. Quills
14. Bullets over Broadway
15. Ordet

I have to second what Raul said.

In past HoFs people have finished and sent in their list without writing all the reviews, that's always been allowed. In the 25th HoF which I hosted Edarsenal was short one review but finished on time and sent in his list, so no problem.

And it was for a gosh durned good reason, too

I get a big kick out of seeing what Criterion has done visually for their films. They do it better than nearly anyone else.

And Then There Were None...I expected more out of this but it felt pretty TV average. I had it at #8

Last Year At Marienbad...cool nom I guess, but I couldn't connect to it, it was my #11

Angel-A...I liked it a lot, I thought it was fresh I liked the tall girl too. My #2

The Celebration...I hated this, if this is representative of Dogme 95 then I've had enough of that. My #10

Tower...I hate rotoscope and had no connection, I felt nothing and that's a huge strike against as it's a potent story. My #9

Bummer - because I didn't care at all where my selection came as long as it didn't come up last - and it came up last. To start with my first Hall of Fame I mainly went for something I was pretty sure nobody here would have seen before. I can see myself varying and mixing it up a lot concerning the type of film I nominate. Anyway, I can always regale people now with the story how my first Hall of Fame pick came dead last - or perhaps even all my Hall of Fame picks come last. But I have a feeling the different directions I take might mean mixed results.

I voted mostly in order of what I thought of the films, except in 2 places where my vote was strategic. In both of those cases it didn't effect the result, but something inside of me kind of regretted not voting strictly in order of what I thought of the films - I'll show the difference below. At the moment I was voting, I really wanted Sweet Smell of Success to win this Hall of Fame, because as a winner, people might notice it more - and more people have to be made aware of this awesome film. If I'd given myself a day or two to ponder my voting, Sweet Smell of Success would have been third. When we started, I desperately wanted The Passion of Joan of Arc to win. Also, I put my film 2nd on my ballot just to try and help it not come last. But it came last anyway. Don't feel bad for me - I really enjoyed all of the films I hadn't seen before, and my first Hall of Fame.

My strategic actual votes :

1) Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
2) Not Quite Hollywood (2008)
3) The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
4) The Wizard of Oz (1939)
5) Last Year at Marienbad (1960)
6) All the President's Men (1976)
7) The Celebration (1998)
8) Tower (2016)
9) Cinema Paradiso (1988)
10) Daisies (1966)
11) Angel-A (2005)
12) And Then There Were None (2015)

How I would have gone if I had my time again and voted strictly in line with what I thought of each film :

1) The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
2) The Wizard of Oz (1939)
3) Sweet Smell of Success (1957)
4) Last Year at Marienbad (1960)
5) All the President's Men (1976)
6) The Celebration (1998)
7) Tower (2016)
8) Cinema Paradiso (1988)
9) Not Quite Hollywood (2008)
10) Daisies (1966)
11) Angel-A (2005)
12) And Then There Were None (2015)

Obviously, I don't mind The Wizard of Oz making the Hall of Fame - it thoroughly deserves to - but - it pains me a great deal that The Passion of Joan of Arc didn't make it. It's also a shame Sweet Smell of Success didn't. Those things more than my selection coming last 😭

I had a wonderful, and painful time. I really hope these Hall of Fames continue long into the future so I can get to experience it many times again.

Big thanks to SpelingError for hosting! And everybody!

Like CR mentioned a lot of us have been last. I have and the majority of mine have been on the lower end of the final vote.
So don't worry about that. Its the experience and opportunity to see films you normally wouldn't see that always brings me back.

I've been in 3 of these now and I think my picks have all finished bottom 3 and I don't see that changing in the future lmao but this is a fun way to see a lot of films I "should" see that I normally wouldn't get around to and the company ain't bad either <3

I've already flipped-flopped on my nom choice for the 27th more times than I can count:D I'm not sure what criteria I should be using to choose my next nom? How do you all choose an HoF nom?

Well I sure did catch a lot of heat for blind-picking that one time so that move is out lol. I might catch some heat for my reasoning on the next one too but the important thing for me is just picking something I feel like watching in the moment.

I might catch some heat for my reasoning on the next one too but the important thing for me is just picking something I feel like watching in the moment.I do that too, there's movies that I think would be great for the next HoF but if I just seen them I don't care to rewatch them so choose something else.

I pick one of my all time favourites that I think people will like.

How do you all choose an HoF nom?I didn't participate in this HoF, but I'm answering anyway.

Besides picking something I like and that I think you'll all like, obviously, I go through your profiles on this forum, Letterboxd diaries, etc. to check if you've already seen it. What makes the process of narrowing down the choice to one movie equally difficult and fun is doing all of the above without playing it safe. In other words, I'd like to potentially surprise you with my pick, for it be outside of your comfort zones, to generate good discussion, etc.

I've done that sometimes, mostly I did that for the Personal Recommendation HoFs, where I tried hard as hell to select films that people would like based on my research. The thing that make it's challenging here is people have such a varied range of taste and I only get one shot at it.

BTW, I hope you'll join the 27th HoF! Should be great fun:)

I decided on my next nomination quite a while ago - it's a big one I'm pretty sure everyone will have seen at some point, but I can see myself flip-flopping, nominating a really obscure favourite that most people haven't seen, then a really well-known film I love that I think deserves to be on the Hall of Fame.

The only thing I can add is sometimes films that we might think everyone has seen, they haven't or haven't in a long time. I only seen The Godfather recently and because it was an HoF nom. It didn't win though.

It'd be really good if people haven't seen my nomination for the 27th for a long time. I'd love for everyone to come in and watch it fresh - I've been meaning to give all the previous ones a good look to see if it's been nominated before, and if so, how long that's been. I'm actually pretty interested in giving some of the previous Hall of Fame threads a read. Based on some of the winners they must have been a heap of fun and pretty informative.
