View Full Version : A Song For January

Same as was done in previous tournaments of this type.....
Join in and drop out as you please
No set number of nominations, nominate on the fly
Max song duration: 11 minutes
No individual matches means no random or host 'fixing' the matches
Only one nomination per person per 'round'
Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.
Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).
The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.

No idea if there will be any desire for one of these this early in 2021 but I expect 'lockdowns' to become fairly prevalent in a few places following a Christmas Covid-19 surge so I thought it might be a welcome distraction and we'll see.
If there is enough interest I propose to start Round 1 at 9am (GMT) on 3rd January so nominations are welcome up to that point.
As per a comment from pahaK in the previous tournament the time limit per track for this one has been increased slightly from the usual 10 minutes to 11 minutes.

I'll be on board. Now.... To theme or not to theme?
How could I not join when even the rules have been altered for me? Anyways, I won't be abusing the extra minute that much, but I guess I'll have to start with the song that's responsible for this alteration. And like I said, it's only a few seconds over the previous 10 minutes rule.

I am. Though it's a shame as the video works so well with the song.

Death In Vegas - Aisha - I love this song and bought the album on the strength of it. Good purchase. Shame the vid isn't working for everyone. Maybe that will explain its inevitable poor performance?
The Organ - Brother - Good start to the round. Here's hoping it'll continue as I know almost none of the others here.
Argentum - Horta Funebra - I spoke to soon, but only because of the length. The actual track was pretty good. I'd have just been happy for it to end at about the 6 minute mark when I thought it had.... For half a second.
Clan of Xymox - Jasmine and Rose - It's ok but it's more in my wheelhouse so even though I don't know the song it feels familiar. It's going to place fairly well.
Neu!- Hallogallo - It's like the intro to what you think may well be a good 80's pop song which never materialises. :( I've been here for nearly half an hour and I've only listened to 3 songs. :(
Dierks Bentley - What The Hell Did I Say - This was alright. Sorry gbg.
Jack Harlow ft. Dababy, Tory Lanez, & Lil Wayne - What's Poppin - Not quite my thing but it was short and catchy. After the previous 20 it was a welcome change of pace.
Rattlesnake Milk - Dave Dudley - Have you guys started posting better country songs? I don't hate this either.
Noreaga - Superthug - Sorry this didn't do anything for me. It didn't even annoy me. It might end up higher just because something else will annoy me. :D Oh, hello Bob....
Cage The Elephant - Cigarette Daydreams - Nice but quickly forgettable.
Machine Gun Kelly - Bloody Valentine - Kind of just there. Nice but nothing else. I would choose to listen to this again but not because I dislike it.
Bob Dylan - I Want You - Actually that's quite a nice pop song. If it wasn't for that horrible sound he emits when he opens his mouth I might have even liked it a little.

Rattlesnake Milk - Dave Dudley - Have you guys started posting better country songs? I don't hate this either.
Or maybe we've forced you to listen to so much country in these tournaments that your taste is starting to evolve? In another year you'll be nominating Willie Nelson songs and using words like "hootenanny." ;)
for my new year's resolution, i just decided now that i will play my Bowie Spotify tracks in random order. instead of starting with 1. Outside and playing through all his albums ending with VH1 Storytellers (Live). now, it will be totally random making every track feel like something new. i currently have 253 Bowie tracks on my phone. right now, apparently the opening title to Labyrinth (with Underground) is my most listened to track from 2020 at 339 streams of that one song alone. makes sense.

Neil Young - Unknown Legend (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u1xkFRdBwhM&ab_channel=NeilYoung-Topic)
Kewl.
Just the one small thing, it's appreciated if links can be formatted as external ones rather than embedded. For anyone working with "www" type song links (as opposed to the "youtu.be" variety) that maybe doesn't know how to make a song link external (rather than imbedding the video):
External linking is easy:
Copy the url of the song link you want (it has to be a free to access link - most of the time players tend to use YouTube)
Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. "The Beatles - In My Life"
Highlight the text
In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. are) click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier
Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it
You can verify it looks right and even that they work by previewing the post.
As you can see I've already modified the Neil Young one for you in the quote so no need to change that one (unless you fancy a practise run). I do know this can be problematic if attempted from a mobile so I don't mind formatting for people as and when needed but it does make running these that little bit easier if that is kept to a minimum.
Welcome in and hope you find it enjoyable.

Or maybe we've forced you to listen to so much country in these tournaments that your taste is starting to evolve? In another year you'll be nominating Willie Nelson songs and using words like "hootenanny." ;)
That is another possiblility but I rejected it because there's not enough info to make that the most likely outcome atm.
And I'm not using the word hootenanny. I'm English. :D

6. Woodkid - Run Boy Run
7. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out
8. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind
Don Williams: He had such a great, smooth voice. This is a peaceful listen. Not too many frills, not overly exciting, but reliable and trustworthy, as Don Williams was.
Jaime Wyatt: I still haven't gotten around to her most recent album, I need to rectify that soon. The first time I heard her, it was her cover of Misery and Gin, which I think is one of the top 25 country songs of the last decade. She's great, and the more I listen to Felony Blues, the more I like it. She's a very good songwriter in her own right.
Sky Pig: pretty cool vibe
Marshmello & Halsey: not for me. Is the girl in the video Halsey? she cute
Woodkid: Always makes me wonder where I've been when I see a video has over 80 million views and I have no idea what it is. I'm neither hot nor cold on this track. I appreciate the music video doing something interesting. It almost looks like an NES or SNES left-to-right scroller at times.
The Gutter Twins: There's a lot going on in the production here, to the point where I was paying attention to certain elements of it and forgot to listen the rest of the song. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because I want to listen to it again.
MIEN: I can see myself getting into these guys if the rest of their work is similar to this.
Linkin Park: I don't much care for Linkin Park. This song has good energy. I've heard worse flows from rappers. Still, not for me.

Round 2
1. The Gutter Twins - The Stations
Mark Lanegan. What more needs to be said? People get your ears checked out. :D NOW! I always hate putting my picks first in these lists (unless it's Bowie), but I've been obsessed with Lanegan's voice for the last quarter of 2020. Then I tripped into The Gutter Twins with their "All Misery/Flowers" track and was elated. It took a while to decide which of these two tracks to post here, but erred on the side of caution feeling that "The Stations" might be more approachable all around. The strings are borderline overdone for me, but the song is solid.
2. MIEN - Earth Moon
oooo groovy. I'm digging this a lot. It's like the smoothest best of Sky Cries Mary and Autolux. I can get into this. And it's actually building. I enjoyed Woodkid, but gotta bump this one up above it for the variety of it all.
3. Woodkid - Run Boy Run
Woo just a few seconds into this one and I'm already overwhelmed. Video takes this sound to the next level. It's as if Morrissey and that guy from Alt-J were caught up into a single teleport stream on the Starship Enterprise, then convinced Hans Zimmer to write a percussive pattern for a pop song, all to be directed by Tim Burton's imagination but with someone else's restraint. Huh. Totally listening to the next track that's loading now.
4. Sky Pig - The Strain
Decent sound all around. I even like the vocals. Just takes too long to get there, and the wall of reverb feels dated. No idea when this came out though. Woah. 2020? Did not expect that. All in all though, it's pretty good. I think shave about 3 minutes off to tighten this up and I feel it'd have a similar energy to "War Pigs." Hm. War Pig? Sky Pig? Is there a relation?
5. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind
Not a fan of the genre, but dang if I can't take my eyes off the video =x That said, Choreography feels plucked from Sia's "Chandelier" (excellent vid, btw. nearly brings tears to my eyes/ears watching and listening to that one). Sorry. Gotta pause this ranking to finish listening to "Chandelier."
6. Don Williams - My Heart To You
Good country. Just never much of a fan so other tracks will usually take higher billings with me. (sorry!)
7. Jaime Wyatt - Wishing Well
This is right there at my border of country. Pretty good all around, but that classic voice-cracking is a bit much in the first verse. Melody reminds me of something but I can't place it. I'm thinking Emmylou Harris maybe. Maybe Aoife O'Donovan. Hate I can't find it...
8. Linkin Park - Bleed It Out
Linkin Park is the devil! But at least Fred Durst is the devil's pool boy. ;)
p.s. I hate Morrissey tho
R3 Nommers:
Duran Duran - The Reflex (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HY2xrQVplpg)
There WAS a theme, but had to throw this in, totally screwing up that concept (brilliant that it was, though). Anyway. Listen to this bridge at least, and I dare ANY of you to convince me Mike Patton wasn't the original vocalist ā la the Milli Vanilli scandal. You can't. Cuz he was. LISTEN!
yay. this day can END now!

I don't usually nominate the same artist back-to-back like this. Duran Duran - The Reflex § (alt link if needed) - I just love this song. There are better DD songs, but this'll do just fine thank you. :)
The KLF - America: What Time Is Love? - I like The KLF but some of their stuff is fantastic. This is one of them. I will nominate another though as I just couldn't choose which.
Yola - Faraway Look - Now this has feeling. Maybe that's what was missing from the other mellow songs. There's heart here and I really like it. Quite a 60's feel though, which I'm not quite sure about. Still, there's more than enough here to be encouraged after a first listen.
Harry Connick Jr. - A Wink And A Smile - This is just a nice, comfortable song. There isn't really a downside side unless you say it's too short.
Meg Myers - Running Up That Hill - I like the original and this is a good cover.
Dool - Wolf Moon - I'm liking this. Not quite my 'thing' but close enough for it to do well for me today.
Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore - I'm never quite sure about Zeppelin. Sometimes it's as good as rock gets while other times I wonder what all the fuss is about. This falls somewhere between the two.
Young Marble Giants - Choco Loni - Not quite sure what to think of this. At least it's short.
Pete International Airport - Flowers of Evil - Again nothing really. Maybe I'm just not in the mood today?
Chris Brown ft. Young Thug - Go Crazy - Quite mellow, which I liked, but it means it didn't imprint itself in my mind and sounded quite generic.
Neil Young - Unknown Legend - Neil Young is another one I don't really get. I don't hate it, it just does nothing for me.

(Multitasking at the moment so I can't comment or pay much attention to the videos, but this song was so insanely entertaining, energetic and fun that I had to stop everything else I was doing to bask in its craziness. Listening to it again as I type this. Never heard of this group, as far I know, but if this is anything like their other stuff, I'll be blasting them in the future when I want to raise the roof . . . Raise the roof? Is that a thing cool people still say? I mean that this song is da bomb. I want to get jiggy wit it.)

My thoughts as I listened:
Uncle Tupelo: I just recently listened to the good Uncle's debut album while I was on the elliptical. They are a big name among underground/alt country music fans, but a pretty big blind spot for me. I want to check that scene out a little more. I know we live in an unjust world, so complaining about certain deserving individuals not getting the shine they deserve is futile, but these guys clearly deserve to be known much more than they are. This is the same type of stuff Kristofferson was doing.
Ashley McBryde: As much as I love bad bitches in country music, I still haven't gotten into Ms. McBryde. She's great on this track. It feels real and honest. Performing it solo acoustic like this adds a layer of vulnerability that works really well with a lot of female country singers. I can't remember the exact song that I am thinking of, but this reminds me a little bit of one of the Caitlyn Smith songs I'm a fan of.
Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters: Probably heard this a hundred times playing Fallout and never knew what it was. It's campy, but entertaining as hell. It really sounds like ol' Danny says "uncivilized bitches" but I guess he says "pictures". Reminds me of how my brother thought that Brenda Lee said "Later we'll have some f*cking pie" when she in fact was planning on eating pumpkin pie.
Ava Max: There is something here, don't know what it is. It suffers from what a lot of pop music suffers from though, as it doesn't feel authentic in any way. One of my thoughts while listening to this was that I would be willing to bet a lot of people wrote this song. Yep six writers.
Led Zeppelin: My nom. Bonzo beats the sh*t out of the drums. Everybody plays their machines well. This is my favorite track from Zep II.
Radiohead: Never really been able to get into Radiohead. I think "Creep" is a great song, but that seems more like an anomaly to me than anything else. Radiohead is the epitome of okay to me. This song is okay. Whatever Radiohead is missing it's not the same thing as Ava Max. I do believe these guys, they feel authentic. But I guess their stuff is supposed to be pretty depressing, but the only time they get me on their side is "Creep". Maybe because it is so in your face and abrasive, and the self-pity in that song is also manifesting as anger instead of only wallowing and moaning about. Okay song that doesn't click for me.
King's X: Don't guess I know anything about these guys. This is pretty solid, maybe even pretty good if I were to give closer inspection. I'm here for the solo.
Jim Reeves: Not much to say here other than this is really good stuff.
Seven Spires: I love how f*cking goofy this aesthetic is. Which is how I feel about most metal stuff. Metal goofiness is kind of an impediment to my enjoyment. I think I'd enjoy it more if it didn't seem like a bunch of edgelord nerds cosplaying. This choir (?) in the background sounds good. That one dude has a long neck in the video. It's better than bad, but not that much better than alright.* *Allow me to issue a disclaimer about this statement I just made. I'm only speaking for myself, I don't mean for this to sound inflammatory or in judgment of someone else's taste. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I like that others would find to be low-brow or of inferior quality.
Akua Naru: Never heard of Akua Naru. The best compliment I can give right now about this song is that there is enough depth in the lyrics that I'm sure I missed a whole lot in it. I did hear a "cracker" in there, which is obviously not as bad as using the N-word as a derogatory term. I do think in can clash with a message of a song, but I wouldn't protest the usage of the word. I'd also need to read the lyrics of the song for more context. And I agree with Akua Naru, slavery f*cking sucked. Obviously.
David Bowie: Yeah, David Bowie was pretty good. He had to be pretty good to get over while looking that atrocious.
Jorja Smith: I'm not entirely in love with this song (yet) but it's this type of pop song-writing I can get behind. Enough depth to it, that it could require a little looking into to know what everything means. Sirens are provocative, so using that terminlogy and production using sounds that invoke sirens are a good way to get your attention. Good usage of sampling on the track as well. This track feels authentic in the way a pop song can, as in it feels like the majority of this track was written by one person, but I can see that there are several writing credits here too. One of them, at least, are credits for the dude whose song was sampled though. I don't guess I know how song credits are given anymore, so maybe I should retract my statement about the Ava Max song.
CHAI: grating.

Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (m.youtube.com/watch?v=U2xFLLG2jqk&ab_channel=LedZeppelin)
I swear I'll eventually stop nominating Zeppelin songs, but it's what I'm listening to right now. Zeppelin writing songs about women usually weren't the most loving tributes. Even the ones that are actually loving fail to capture the easy-going, genuine joy Robert Plant seemed to get from his dog. He says it himself "Ain't no companion like a blue-eyed Merle".

Round 4
1. David Bowie - Life On Mars?
One of the greatest songs ever written.
2. Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick
Always loved this Led Zep track.
3. Akua Naru - Sweat
Discovered her music and poetry about 2 months ago and I'm quite in love. Her mix of hip hop, jazz and Africa is sublime. The first song I heard of hers is called "My Mother's Daughter". Almost went with that but thought it might be too jazz-heavy for everyone...
4. CHAI - N.E.O.
I had no business liking this as much as I did, lol. That was fun! I think this is going on my ever growing new **** playlist.
5. Radiohead - Street Spirit
Radiohead's definitely a band I like a lot.
6. Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - Civilization
I like The Andrews Sisters...never heard this one before.
7. King's X - Prisoner
I've never listened to King's X but I've heard of them. Kind of wish it were heavier.
8. Ashley McBryde - Girl Goin' Nowhere (acoustic)
9. Seven Spires - Drowner of Worlds
I also agreed with that youtube comment mentioned.

David Bowie - Life On Mars? - It's Bowie's Life On Mars.
Jorja Smith - Blue Lights - Now that worked for me. Old skool sound and a very 80's feel to the lyrics. Thanks for making me aware of this artist.
King's X - Prisoner - This is OK. Nothing earth shattering or anything, but easy enough to listen to and that's going to score well in this round with me.
Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick - It's such a simple riff. But so effective. I have to admit being one of those people who looked skyward at rock concerts when the rest of the band walk off stage leaving the drummer and bassist (if you're lucky) and you get 5 minutes of drum solo. But so far there isn't much to challenge this and I do love that riff.
CHAI - N.E.O. - I don't know how much of it I'd like to listen to, but I liked to listen to this much of it.
Ava Max - Who's Laughing Now - I've heard a couple of her songs now and this is the least, but still an ok pop song.
Jim Reeves - Room Full of Roses - This reminds me of being at my grandparents. That is both good and bad. :D
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) - I really don't like Radiohead. That said there are a few of their songs which I really do like. Love even. This isn't one of them but the fade out refrain stays with me long after the song (finally) ends.
Akua Naru - Sweat § (alt if needed) - This just didn't work for me. I don't know why. I almost feel as if I should like it more than I did or something. Odd.
Ashley McBryde - Girl Goin' Nowhere (acoustic) - It's mellow, but I'm definitely thinking country still isn't for me. Prefer it to the first though.:)
Seven Spires - Drowner of Worlds - Sorry, I just can't take that vocal seriously. I suspect if I watched the videos of these songs this might do worse.
Uncle Tupelo - Moonshiner - Sorry guys, on this evidence it appears you were just posting better country songs. :D
Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - Civilization - This ain't me either. Not sure where I'm going to put it though. One of those which will depend on everything else more than its own merits for me.

My R5 nom:
The KLF - 3am (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=A57P8hjdYcY)
1. David Bowie - Life On Mars?
Seriously. Bowie. Why every track isn't one of his is mesmerizing.
2. CHAI - N.E.O.
Just adorable. I love their message, and they're clearly having fun in the faces of a culture and industry that say that they shouldn't.
3. Radiohead - Street Spirit
Can rarely go wrong with Radiohead. Loved this track.
4. Akua Naru - Sweat
Smooth stuff.
5. Ashley McBryde - Girl Goin' Nowhere
I much prefer a live (acoustic) set from a country performer, sans lights, staging, and a performance. Her guitar skills are far better than I ever hope to develop and her voice, here, is sweet and pure. Really nice stuff here. Nice selection. Keep posting stuff like this and you might make a convert out of me yet.
6. Led Zeppelin - Moby Dick
Pretty great without vocals!
7. Jorja Smith - Blue Lights
I like this. A lot. But it does kind of stay on the same level for much too long. The last 40 seconds or so needed to happen about a minute or two earlier.
8. Uncle Tupelo - Moonshiner
While I'm not a fan of his voice (maybe it just needs a nudge of better production?), this song feels authentic to me. I just checked the dates on this group and that makes sense with what I'm hearing. I'd listen to this every day over a lot of contemporary folk that's been so popular in commercials this past decade. I won't comment on the pop country as I think I've beaten, resurrected, and zombified that particular horse a few times now already.
9. Jim Reeves - Room Full of Roses
Nothing much to say. It's Jim Reeves.
10. King's X - Prisoner
I could never really get into King's X. Friends loved them, but Iderno.
11. Ava Max - Who's Laughing Now
Cute melody. Catchy pop. I'm actually interested in her voice. She seems to have a good range, but I think the song is too safe and predictable, considering the potential I'm hearing in her voice here. The video does not help, IMO.
12. Danny Kaye & The Andrews Sisters - Civilization
Yikes! I'm usually pretty good with the sound of traditional pop music of this time. I love the orchestration of borderline big jazz swing and the typical playful harmonies of the female vocals. Just this particular track pushes too many buttons for me to enjoy.

8. Nothing but Thieves - Phobia [Wuh Oh Remix]
9. Michael Crawford - Somewhere In Time
10. Soda Stereo - Luna Roja
11. Solitude Aeturnus - Mirror of Sorrow
12. Jambo - Try
All decent songs, it was hard to rank.
1. Dua Lipa - Break My Heart
2. Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe - Cocaine Cat (hypnotically good)
3. Jambo - Try (hypnotic crescendo and manly rap)
4. Solitude Aeturnus - Mirror of Sorrow (nice instrumentals and melodic singing beautiful voice)
5. Nothing but Thieves - Phobia [Wuh Oh Remix] (nice beat and crass guitars giving some edge)
6. Leon Bridges - River (mellow voice and nice instrumentals, slight drag on chorus though)
7. The KLF - 3am (it transcends early 90s beat in a good way)
8. Billy Joe Shaver - Live Forever (nice country song)
9. Soda Stereo - Luna Roja (decent rock)
10. Dire Straits - Romeo and Juliet (I could barely hear it though)
11. Led Zeppelin - Bron-Y-Aur Stomp (a bit repetitive though)
12. Michael Crawford - Somewhere In Time (too sappy though)

Feeling better today, so you get comments. You lucky people! :D
Love/Hate - Blackout In The Red Room - This is just me in my late teens. I was that age when this came out and instantly loved the band. For me this encapsulates that feeling of drunkeness, arrogance, stupidity and invincibility which I felt at that age as I started to venture out into the world trying to find a place without really liking anything I saw.
Beyond the WIzards Sleeve - Creation - Oh I'm loving this. It feels so much like everything on the Hair soundtrack all at once with a jazz twist.
Still Corners - Fade Out - Now this is a good start for me. Nice and mellow.
Black Veil Brides - In The End - Usually Emo pisses me off, but this has a harder edge than what I usually hear referred to as Emo.
Yann Tiersen - La Valse d'Amelie § (alt link if needed) - I love Amelie and this is just a lovely piece of music but each note has a thick black outline giving it weight, belying the melody.
Kanye West - Ghost Town - What little I know about Kanye West has come from hearing people slag him off or headlines. I've never really listened to much more than the odd song or two of his music, so it's a kind of blank slate with me. Not quite sure what I think of this, but it's interesting me. I'll probably give it another listen sometime which isn't something I often think when I do these.
Black Sabbath - Dirty Women § (alt link if needed) - It suffers from being Sabbath but not 'really' Sabbath. But growing pains are difficult and if it wasn't Black Sabbath I'd probably think better of it.
Iced Earth - Valley Forge - I can't tell if sub-par Maiden would be an insult or a compliment?
J. Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, Tainy - Un Dia (One Day) - I quite like Dua Lipa, but I find the fewer people she's workiing with the better for me and so it proved here again.
Paul Simon - Loves Me Like a Rock - I'd rather they hit him with the bloody rock.
Mark Collie - Even the Man in the Moon is Crying - Having to listen to him I can understand why.
Pink Floyd - Echoes (Part 1) - Most of you probably know how I feel about The Floyd. 10+ minutes? It's like Portishead on Ketamine with 6th form poetry lyrics. Then it becomes background music for the most part, which is the best bit, but I'd still rather be listening to something else.
CaptainT
01-14-21, 07:51 PM
CaptainT - it would appear the link for Yann Tiersen doesn't work in at least parts of the U.S. so I've added in an alt link to the one jj listened to, unfortunately that link doesn't work for me but it is from the Yann Tiersen YT channel so I'm assuming it's similar quality to the one you provided. Mebbe both links will work for you?
The alternative link doesn't work for me either, so I guess we will never know! :p
But since they're from the same channel and have the same name there probably weren't any big differences.

Elastica - Connection - I love this song.
Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now - I really like this song. It's unusual for me to know something nominated in these but I like Dua Lipa.
Neil Diamond - Hello Again - Hello again, Neil. There are times where this kind of thing sounds way too schmaltzy for me. Almost mechanical in it's lyrical precision in how it works your emotions or tugs at the heartstrings. But today isn't one of those days, so it's much appreciated by this slightly more human version of HK.
2 Foot Yard - Borrowed Arms - Now this worked for me. Nice and mellow. It reminds me of something else I can't quite bring to mind. Love the drumbeats.
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult - Portrait of the Damned - I don't mind stuff like this as a one off.
The Fall - Frightened - The Fall are one of those 'great' bands which I didn't get. But I quite liked this, so maybe I should try again?
Actors - Slaves - Joy Division on Prozac? I don't know. I didn't hate it but it did really work for me either.
Tau Cross - Messengers of Deception - All this kind of stuff sounds the same to me. Sorry.
Falling In Reverse - Popular Monster - This is the kind of metal I just don't get because the vocal usually annoys me... As it does here.
Johnny Cash - I Heard That Lonesome Whistle - I'm starting to think it really was just that you guys chose some better country songs. :D Not horrible, just blah.

10. Khalid - Better
Khalid: I know the name but I don't know much about Khalid. He starts about singing in that lazy, mush-mouthed, mumbling way that's so prevalent nowadays that almost nobody does in a compelling way. There's no emotion, no energy, nothing, and this song is supposed to be about how nothing feels better than whatever "this" is. I've obviously missed something in the lyrics, but I think I can be forgiven because I can't understand half of what he is singing. Perhaps the song is tongue-in-cheek and the idea is that he's going for something like Weeknd lyrics where he's numb but he's doing wild sh*t just to feel something, but the feeling quickly goes away. But The Weeknd makes that stuff compelling, because he actually sings. Maybe Khalid has some better songs. We are a minute in, and I'm already hoping the next three go quicker than the first one. I'm not judging the song based on Khalid's dancing, but his dancing is just as boring as his singing. Sorry to whoever nominated this song, it's just not for me.
Stevie Parker: And instantly I sound like a hypocrite for liking this song a little bit. She does some of the things I complained about in the previous song. She comes off as low energy, but this works a little better, pardon the pun, because lyrically this song sounds a little more fitting for this type of singing. Plus this wasn't all mush-mouthed, and this at least rises and comes down real low and there's movement with her voice. And I at least feel like I'm on some kind of ride with this song. Still, it's not amazing or anything.
Ghoultown: I haven't hit play on this track yet, but judging a book by its cover tells me that at the very least, this track won't be low energy and there's going to be some kind of emotion here. Quick google search tells me these boys are from my neck of the woods. I don't think this particular track is the best of this style of gothic alt-country or whatever you want to call it. But the mid-tier of this type of thing will be more interesting to me than upper mid-tier modern pop music.
Man In The Box cover: The original song is good, and I don't know if anybody has ever nominated a YouTube cover of a song in one of these before. This might be a ground break nomination. And Jayayayayayayasayauyuyuyus Christ this guy can definitely belt this stuff out. This is pretty wild for just a dude on YouTube, impressive really, but I think this is sort like watching an early, silent, experimental short that goes for 20 minutes where you get the cool idea in the first 5-10 and you don't really need to see the gimmick go on that much longer.
The Donnas: I'm not really feeling this, but I don't think they would care, and more power to them for that.
Mitski: I've seen the name a million times, but never plunged into the depths of discovery to purify myself in the waters of Lake Mitskitonka. If this song is indicative of her style, it would be safe to say there is something to her. This gets pretty creepy sounding at times, but I don't know exactly how I feel about how her voice really fits with this music.
The Offspring: Well at least I believe this guy actually feels what he's singing about.
Aretha: My nomination. This song is dope on every level. The piano comes in and the sh*t just hits. That crazy high note Aretha hits is amazing. The chorus of Aretha belting out the word "freedom" is amazing. I love everything about this song. Aretha is a legend.
Loretta Lynn: I am very familiar with this song, but I'm happy to listen to it again. Loretta is every bit the legend that Aretha is. I know it's not a new revelation, but watching this video just reminds me of how much of an influence Loretta had on Kacey Musgraves. I'm a big fan of Musgraves, but she really doesn't hold a candle to Loretta. Loretta is a natural. Even if Loretta wasn't writing her own tunes, she owns everything that comes out of her mouth. It's a lot of that kind of cutesy songwriting that can really come off as unnatural and cringey in the wrong hands, but the charisma of Loretta Lynn is otherworldly.
The Piedmont Boys: I was trying to figure out if I knew the Piedmont Boys, but I can't place them. As soon as country sounds start coming from this video, I knew this round was gonna close out with my top three. Now the question is if I should give this bonus points for being brand new to me. The battle is whether or not this would beat out Loretta. I don't think that'll happen, but clearly this is a good song. Something I'm glad to hear. There's a badass reference to Keith Whitley in here too.
