The Donnas - Who Invited You - Adore this song. It's the one which got me into The Donnas and after that last track I need something good to clear my ears out.
Aretha Franklin - Think - Stone. Cold. Classic. And still brilliant.
Mitski - Cop Car - I like this, it works very well for my current mood. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
The Offspring - Gone Away - I quite like The Offspring but I've never really gotten into them. I'm sure this will do well today.
Stevie Parker - Better Off - Quite like this. Feels very much the kind of thing I might grow to like. I know no one else takes it this as a positive, but it has a 'serious ballad' Eurovision feel to it.
Loretta Lynn - One's On The Way - It's proper country, but not terribly so. And short.
Ghoultown - Devil's Comin' 'Round - As a one-off this kind of folky sea shanty thing can work, but it's pretty short and I was already done with it before the 3 minute mark.
The Piedmont Boys - In Came You - Longer than the last one, so not quite as good. :D
Khalid - Better - Nothing feels better, but plenty sounds better. In a fairly rare occurance musically, I agree with JJ on this one. Except I don't watch the vids, so I don't know how Khalid dances. :D
Nathan Wesley - Man In The Box (cover) - OK, that needs to stop.

Travis Scott/Drake: I am not usually a Drake hater, but man he was atrocious in this song. I also hate the way he says "yuh". This song is probably a 2. It's never consistently bad, but it's a bit ADHD.
Bob Dylan: I'm not listening to these songs in top down order this round, for some reason. I decided to listen to my song second. I can see some of y'all hating this song, because of the way Bobby sings in it. I love it though, this song and Romance in Durango really have a cool ass western taking place in Mexico vibe.
Becky Warren: Never heard of Becky, but she's doing country music so I'm gonna pay attention. I think her songwriting is a bit of a mixed bag in this song, like I'm all for the sentiment of the song and some of her metaphors are really cool, but some of it feels a bit on the nose. It's more of a gripe over small details of the lyrics rather than the overall product. If this was an average country song, we'd be doing good right now. I'll be checking out more of her work. I like her voice and I like her delivery. The music is good country sounds.
Mr. Mister: It's not really my style. A little too much cheese for me.
Howard Jones: I like this a little more than the Mr. Mister song, but still reeks a little strongly of the 80s goofiness for me to get full enjoyment out of it.
Fur Patrol: I didn't know what to expect, but I loved this.
Somali Yacht Club: Feels badass, dangerous, and I tend to prefer the metal stuff you can tell descended from Sabbath, like this.
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant: pretty fun
Martina McBride & Bob Seger: Two people that I don't think suck or anything, but I can't think of anything either one of them have done that I've actually liked.
Savage Garden:

Round 10
1. Becky Warren - Call Me Sometime
2. Somali Yacht Club - The Sun
(Wasn't expecting this sound from a band with that name. Will definitely seek out more of their stuff.)
3. Bob Dylan - One More Cup of Coffee
(For way too long I thought the White Stripes version was an original, and I'm supposed to be a Dylan fan.)
4. Savage Garden - Break Me Shake Me
(I think this is the first CD I ever owned, or at least #2 after the Space Jam soundtrack. Major nostalgia rush right now. Still like this song, as it's always given me "Dirty Diana" vibes.)
5. three machine gun elephant - black tambourine
6. Travis Scott ft. Drake - Sicko Mode

9. Mr. Mister - Kyrie

I haven't listened to much from her, but from I've heard I don't think I would classify her as country. I get much more heartland rock n' roll vibes, like a female Tom Petty or John Mellencamp. Although this particular song, "Call Me Sometime," first reminded me of the 90's hit song "Bitch," (admittedly a guilty pleasure) but I think that's due more to the lyrical approach/attitude than anything else. Warren certainly has a country inflection to her voice, however. I'll be curious to see where she falls on the spectrum for honeykid, since he dislikes country but appreciates ladies who rock.
BTW, I hope you listen to more of The Piedmont Boys, my previous nomination. I saw them get a shout-out on a list of best country albums from 2020. The first song I listened to from them name-dropped several towns within short driving distance of where I'm from, which shocked me since they're fairly dead towns. I knew then that they must have local ties, and I was right. Been listening to their newest album, Almost Home, nearly non-step for the past week or so. Highly recommended.

I listened to a few of The Piedmont Boys songs after listening to the nom. They're very good. The lead singer sounds like someone, but I haven't been able to figure out who he reminds me of yet.

I cast a wide net for what I consider country, I'm not too much of a genre stickler. If I hear a few country sounds and they sound good, I'll bring you into the fold.

I will never have a favorite Dylan song, but this one came across to me as perhaps some of the best vocals he had done. If I could just get past the timbre of his voice, I would like this a lot more. That said, this is probably the best of the stuff I have heard. Great lyrics etc.

Wow wtf is going on with this track? I'm conflicted...one or two vocal lines I'm not a fan of but I like the turns it takes, it is so that's a minor issue. It helped that I listened to this on headphones with great bass response. I'm listening to all the entries this way.

I went to the gym tonight and listened to All on Red. Listening to an album while on the elliptical is not the fairest way to judge an album, so I could be underrating this album a little bit. But I'd say its somewhere between a 3 and 3.5 with room to grow. I'll try to get to the 2020 album when I'm not distracted by anything else.

Blackpink: I don't hate this, but I'm not in love with it either. I can see why somebody would like this. It seems like a high-end version of a lot of the sh*tty modern pop music, which is a backhanded compliment.
Nurnberg: I don't know what's being said, so it actually kinda helps me just vibe. There's a nice vibe here too. I enjoy good post-punk sounds, this has some nice post-punk sounds. It's no Joy Division, but it got my head bobbing.
Courtney Marie Andrews: I love her voice, it's distinct, and it's perfect for this material.
Lee Roy Parnell: This has some of that 80s/90s country production that I don't really love, but is miles and miles and miles better than snaptracks. I don't really know much about Lee Roy Parnell, but I love that jacket he's wearing. I had forgotten about those, but I'm pretty sure my dad had a jacket that had some southwestern patterns like that. I am digging this song. Parnell's voice isn't Keith Whitley levels, but he's got capable pipes. I ended up not paying too close attention to the lyrics, but it sounds like we have an interesting, extended rock metaphor or several rock metaphors or something. I'm into that.
Parkway Drive: I can't really take this too seriously, so I'll just say that it looks like they are having a good time, and I am happy for them for that.
Cat's nom: F*ck yes. What the f*ck is this? I'm very into that double bass. Kjellvander's vocals sound like a lot of country dudes who do that type of singing well, but the instrumentation in this song is a lot more interesting than a lot of country ballads. I mean, this isn't really country, but he's singing like it is. I don't know, this is just kind of blowing my mind right now. cat_sidhe did you nominate this one for me, or was this just a beautiful coincidence?
Steel Blossoms: If we count cat's nom, we have four good ass country songs in this round, and I can't be happier about it. These girls with the steel and some bite in their lyrics. I can get behind this.

Warren certainly has a country inflection to her voice, however. I'll be curious to see where she falls on the spectrum for honeykid, since he dislikes country but appreciates ladies who rock.
As I wasn't around to play the last round (sorry about that, my neck got bad for a couple of days) I didn't hear the songs, but as Captain wondered, I thought I'd take a listen.
It reminds me of something but I'm not quite sure what. I quite liked it though. A little too country and not quite enough rock to really go with it on a first listen and I can't say I feel much desire for a second, but it's not because I didn't like it.
Just for you people....

:yup: And Captain Spaulding too, based on the kinds of things you guys have previously nominated. That album is amazing. Tonbruket is one of my alltime fav bands and Christian Kjellvander is one of Mr Cat's alltime favourites so when they brought out an album together last year, it was like a gift. Tonbruket is an odd band to classify, they're instrumental and very interesting. They basically came from the ashes of Swedish jazz band E.S.T. (Esbjörn Svensson Trio), which broke up after death of Esbjörn Svensson. Christian Kjellvander is also awesome...I think you'd like all of his stuff, Check out his other solo stuff as well as Loosegoats (his band). He always has that country influence without being actual country. Doom Country actually sounds spot on (title of this nom's album).
I was actually not sure sure song to pick as they're all gorgeous. If you have Spotify, go wild! It's all on there. <3

Guns N' Roses - Coma -This is my song. Knew it'd be #1 the moment I saw the Captain had nominated it.
The KLF - Justified & Ancient - I was thinking of another KLF song to use because, despite what it might look like, I am theming. I love the lyrics she sings in this, too. It's just how it happened. However, with all the country I've heard during these, I thought I'd compromise and give you a KLF song you might like a little more than usual. :D
Bic Runga - Sway § (alt link if needed) - Feels very familiar to me despite having not heard it before. It's that wonderful place I do so long for... The 90's. :D
Axwell & Ingrosso - More Than You Know - Standard but decent modern pop. I don't know if it's something I'll ever really like but it's not something I can see myself ending up hating either.
Simple Plan - Jet Lag ft. Marie-Mai - Quite like this, but it has a 00's feel/sound which has never been my thing.
Nikki Lane - Man Up - Quite nice country.
Chris Young - Drinkin' Me Lonely - It's country. I think I'd prefer it if it was more in the 'classic' era. The words are perfect for that. However, it's not going to be last.
Hedningarna - Täss'on Nainen - I didn't hate this, but I was pleased when it finished. At 3 minutes I might've rated it better.

The Allman Brothers Band: Other than "Ramblin' Man", which is brilliant, I haven't listen to much ABB. I know they have a classic live album that's supposed to be an awesome jam session album. I enjoy southern/roots style rock, but I haven't invested much time in learning all about it. This track is pretty smooth and the vocals remind me a lot of Skynyrd.
Birdy: This song feels like it shouldn't be from 2021, but from a time much earlier. At least her voice and singing style do, it reminds me of something I can put my finger on. The production feels modern, but not necessarily in a bad way. It stays out of the way mostly.
Meg Myers: Speaking of modern productions, except this is the modern production I'm not too in love with. I am going to eventually have to figure out if it is that I just don't think the productions any good, in that I don't think it sounds very good or has soul or whatever, or that I'm just never in the mood for it, or if I am just currently tired of it. I'm not a historian or anything, but a lot of this production sounds like it's aping the production of The Weeknd's music from early 2010s. Maybe I'm just spewing nonsense. I don't know. This is an okay modern pop song. Meg Myers clearly has charisma, but I don't know if I'm getting that from the song or the video.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: I expected a real YYY song, so I was sort of looking forward to it. I think maybe I'm just not part of the meme/video game/whatever this is culture that would understand how or why this is entertaining. I'm well aware that that is just me being an old, out-of-touch curmudgeon.
Cody Jinks: This is already a pretty solid country song when the fiddle solo kicks in, then hot damn that fiddle player gets after it. The fiddle player is Billy Contreras. I need to remember the name and look for it when I hear a fiddle.
Alphaville: Fun, can't complain. Reminds me that I really need to see the film the band take their name from. And actually, the longer the song goes, the more it is growing on me.
George Strait: Maybe this is catching me at the right/wrong time, but because of the personal connection I have with George Strait and what he has meant to my family and I when I was growing up, I am honestly in tears listening to this right now. I'm remembering being a child, having my mother still. How happy we were to go see him at Texas Stadium. Having his tapes from the Strait Out of the Box box set. I've heard this song a million times, but it is impossible for me to just rank this or score it based on the song in a vacuum. This reminds me of my childhood, and it kinda broke my heart tonight.

Alphaville - Big In Japan - I always liked this song, even as a child. But when you grow up and really hear it, it's so pitiful and pathetic it hurts. Somehow that enhances the whole thing and elevates it to a favourite I doubt I'll ever grow sick of.
The Allman Brothers Band - Please Call Home - Whilst loving Lynyrd Skynyrd I've never really looked about for much else in that Southern Rock with a country vibe genre. Liked this though, so maybe that'll change soon?
Birdy - Surrender - This really reminds me of a Eurovision ballad, but I can't remeber which. Also can't decide on whether it nearly sounds like it's trying or it actually is trying to be radio friendly but not quite making it? I like it though.
George Strait - Famous Last Words Of A Fool - It's slow mournful country. Typical but maybe I'm getting used to it? Or maybe it's just that it's playing after Big In Japan, but it's working a little better for me than usual.
Meg Myers - Jealous Sea - This just isn't working for me. Not really sure what it's missing, but it definitely doesn't have it.
Cody Jinks - Ain't A Train - It was there and then it finished. I really don't have much else to say about it. Won't be last though. :D
yeah yeah yeahs - heads will roll (remix) - OK. I don't what that was or what it was meant to be. As no one's mentioned it I'm assuming it's the right video. So I'll just call it last place and leave it at that.

Exceptionally hard to rank as I like all these songs quite a bit. Thank you to Chypmunk for hosting, and congrats to whoever's song is the victor. I'd only planned on participating in a couple rounds so that I could use my MoFo time to work on my favorite movies thread, but these tournaments are just too damn fun and too full of great tunes for me to sit on the sidelines. As always, I look forward to the next one.

Hey! Thanks guys. You've restored some of my faith in people. :D
My theme this time was songs which I love but have done badly in previous tournament. As expected most did poorly (though it's possible Ultravox might've even won had I been able to vote) but the main reason for the whole theme was remembering how badly Life On Mars? did in a previous tournament. Out first round. I don't take these seriously, but that loss was incomprehensible to me. Having it win the round was vindication enough, but the whole tournament is great. And derserved. :D
Thanks for the tournament, Chyp. Look forward to the next one.
