Welcome to the 24th Hall of Fame. As for the rules, they will remain to be pretty much what they have been. No films over 280 minutes please. Please join with the intention of watching every movie.
With it being near the holidays and all, I'll give everyone until Jan 1 to decide on a nomination. Then I will unveil. I will take last minute nominations after the unveil if people are interested in joining after seeing what was nominated.
Please try to watch everything again, unless you've seen it super recently. It just makes the process run more smoothly.
Lastly, we can help each other out by finding sources for our noms to make it easier on everybody. Look forward to it!
Please PM your nomination once you think of it!

How much time do we typically have? Is it, like, watch and review one film a week and you should be good?
Usually one a week is exactly how it shakes out.
Thanks for the invitation. Could you please explain the rules or point me in their direction?
The OP isn't very clear on the rules, but references past HOFs. I see threads for 21, 20, etc. but I'm still trying to figure out how it works. Any general rule book?
Thanks for the invitation. Could you please explain the rules or point me in their direction?
Yeah, what Torgus said
So everyone nominates a film. We all watch all the films and then send in a ranked list to the host. A winner is declared based on the same scoring system as our countdown lists
As you watch you post in the thread what you have watched and some thoughts about the film. Generally the host makes the deadline giving a week for the number of films.
I'm not speaking for Raul, but I just don't think he's around right now. He can clarify if I missed something. Usually the general HOF are pretty straightforward. The specialty ones can get bogged down in some minutiae as far as nominations go but are very fun as well.

As for the rules, they will remain to be pretty much what they have been. No films over 280 minutes please. Please join with the intention of watching every movie.
I'll give everyone until Jan 1 to decide on a nomination.
I'm not speaking for Rauldc14 either, he's the host and a cool one too!
Raul did say we'd use the usually rules (which of course if you've never joined that doesn't help much.) So here's what generally happens in an HoF:
Movie Nominations: Any movie under 280 minutes can be nominated, except for previous HoF winners.
PM Rauldc14 your nominations Keep your nomination a secret until the unveiling of the films on January 1st
Length of HoF: Usually 1 week per movie nominated. So if there's 10 members, there's 10 movies and the length of the HoF is 10 weeks. (plenty of movie watching time):)
During the HoF: Everyone watches the nominated movies and discusses them in this thread.
*We're not allowed at MoFo to post illegal movie links, we PM each other for that:p but usually everything can be found from legit sources.

You can nominate something you love or something you've been wanting to see and haven't yet. (known as a "blind grab"). The very first Hall of Fame I joined in on I did a Blind Grab and have now and again.

So here is a question: there are some films that I just will not watch, on principle or for emotional wellness reasons or both.
For example, I do not watch Polanski films. I do not watch films that include real animal cruelty.
Can I still participate knowing that there may be one or two films I will not/may not see? How do you handle your final ranking if there are films you have not seen?

I think the host: Raul, should address that one.
But Raul did say this in the 1st post:
I will take last minute nominations after the unveil if people are interested in joining after seeing what was nominated. So you could pick out your movie, but wait until after all the movie noms are revealed and then decide if you want to still join or not, based on what the movies are.

Highly unlikely you are going to see a Polanski film in the nom pool...most of the time people tend to pick newer films or ones by famous auteurs.
Now with that said certain people will nominate controversial and gross films in which case if you do decide to drop out let us know early.
Good to know about Polanski so out of respect I won't nominate this film

This is a fair warning, and One I think should be easy enough to follow for most. Especially when one considers the amount of film available.
If it is, and you find a particular film triggering, you can opt out.
There are always other HOF.

Along with my nom I've added a link for a pop-up free stream site so if anyone has a problem locating it, just holler
and no worries Takoma11 we all have certain films/directors/actors/subject matter we just can't watch, it happens. :)
Now, I have ventured into areas of film I would never would want to venture into and discovered some truly amazing films, so, to the adventurous. . . ;)

I watch a pretty wide variety of films and I think I'm pretty open-minded. There are a handful of non-negotiable elements that I have (like real animal cruelty and a few individuals I find repugnant enough that I don't want anything to do with them), but for the most part I can handle pretty heavy content.
I think it's the context of a challenge where you HAVE to watch the movies and don't have the option to skip one that's got me a little anxious. And also I don't want to offend someone or hurt their feelings by not watching a movie they picked. "Oh, excuse me. I won't be watching THAT! It's against my morals!!" *adjusts halo*.

Once I get home from work, I’ll have a film chosen. Going to go through Amazon and see if it’s available first
I'll give it a shot. I'm a new dad and I'm going back to work next week, at which point I'll really see how much free time I really have. If I don't think I can see the project through, I'll give those in charge a heads up in plenty of time.
Dumb question that's probably already been answered: does my nomination have to be one that has not been in any of the previous 23?

Hey. I like Crash. Not love, mind you, but I enjoy it. Though I wonder how a rewatch after 14 years will hold up. 🤔
Crash is a C/C- film with some good performances, a handful of genuinely interesting sequences (namely Matt Dillon and Thandie Newton), and an eight-grade-level message about racism/racial tolerance (OMG! Did you know that Hispanic people can have racial biases?!?! Did you know that sometimes people behave in ways that align with stereotypes?!). It is an okay film and the fact that it won Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain is borderline criminal.
It's also not even close to being the best movie called Crash, but that's another conversation.
I am pretty sure I agree Takoma. Haven't seen it since it came out though and I kind of want to check it out again. I remember next to nothing about it.

Also, it's fine if you like (or love) Crash. Many of my favorite movies don't even break the 6/10 barrier on IMDb.
I just have to razz it when the Best Picture Oscar is mentioned because it was such an upset at the time. (I think there was a thousand-post thread about it on Rotten Tomatoes).

Right, It wasn’t the greatest film or anything, as I found it predictable and laden with stereotypes as well, and definitely didn’t deserve to win over Brokeback, but that’s beside the point.
I feel like that last tidbit tends to overshadow it’s worth, such as it is, and people think simply because it robbed Brokeback of its win, it somehow gets picked apart, somewhat unjustly, rather then focusing on its own merits, of which it did deliver on, especially with Dillon, Phillipe, and Tandy Newton.

Right. To clarify, it had no business winning over Brokeback. Brokeback moved me. That last line, “Jack, I swear...”. As he gazes at Jacks shirt crushes me every...friggin....time.....

When I nominate something for the General HOF, I look for something I consider a masterpiece. That's exactly what I nominated for this HOF and the last one. Both are masterpieces in my eyes. I know, eventually, I will be comfortable nominating something that isn't a masterpiece but just a film I enjoy watching. I have one of those already in my backpocket. I just need to learn that not everyone sees things as I do.

Crash winning Best Picture over Brokeback Mountain starkly calls into relief the difference in the complexities of the two films. Despite tackling a slew of social issues, Crash is not particularly bold, in my opinion, and it's main message seems to be, "Whoa, guys, this stuff is complicated!". I actually think that despite what appears to be an intended push for racial tolerance, it actually invites complacency by urging personal decency but acting as if things are just way too complex. It's attitude toward systemic racism is very "isn't that a shame?" and it offers very little direction forward.
The Dillon/Newton scene is powerful, but ultimately it comes down to an individual realizing that using his state-backed power to sexually abuse and humiliate someone is wrong. And the end of his arc involves getting a weary Black government agent on his side. I was shocked when I finally watched the film (about two months after it won the Oscar) at how basic it all was. Also, the most reproduced image from the film is of its main white male character being heroic while a tearful woman clings to him.

There was a 1/10 review of The Invitation where the complaint was that "You wouldn't ever have a gay couple AND an Asian person at the same party. Just another example of Hollywood PC culture!!".
This was when IMDb still had forums and he took this complaint there as well. When a ton of people were like "Um, I've been at parties with gay couples and a mix of races/ethnicities, it's not that uncommon in cities" he accused everyone of lying to support the Hollywood liberal agenda. LOL.

I'm pretty sure this HoF's nomination is the 7th film I've nominated from my ballot in an ongoing all-time top-100 countdown. From my previous placements in the HoFs, I'd say it's fair to say that one person's masterpiece is another person's trash :D
Believe me, the last HOF I was in, the 23rd, there were a few films I had to force myself through.
That happens to me in practically every HoF as well. For most of the time, I still consider it a fair price for a chance to find something good/great that I wouldn't have watched otherwise (like Al-mummia in 23rd).
Same for me in all the many HoFs I've been in. That's because people have vastly different taste. I learned one just can't please everyone with one's nom.
Yeah. I do hope that someone who hasn't seen my nomination, ends up liking it a lot, but I admit that even the trashings of my films are often rewarding to read. And I don't mean that in a trolling sense, but as a genuine interest in why and how the level of appreciation towards a film differs so drastically.

See that is a film I WOULD NOT enjoy. These are the types I dislike the most and ones that make fun of women.I seen The Lighthouse recently. I didn't care for it as it went too far to the slasher/horror side by the end of the film. Which for me was a pity as it started out as a spell binding, psychological sturdy of two men sequestered on a remote light house, cut off from civilization. I had hoped it would stay reserved and be more like The Innocents (1960) but by the end it went over the top, pulling out the usual horror tropes. I like restrained movies, but you might like it...and it's not a fart joke movie, it's darker and more brooding and serious.

I'd venture a guess to say that most fans of horror/thriller would really enjoy it. Even though I didn't enjoy the ending, I loved the first half. I think that Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe are pretty amazing in it and play off of each other really well.
I have seen a lot of Pattinson's films in the last year, and I think he's actually a really incredible actor. Even in the films I didn't love (like The Devil All the Time), he was one of the best things about it. I think that his best two performances were in High Life and Good Time.
The Lighthouse strikes a very strange tone, and it has this mythology-infused horror vibe. It is strange, but unapologetically so. I'd almost consider it more of a psychological fantasy than a horror.
I watched it with two other people and we had a blast with it. Even if you don't appreciate its tone, the lead performances and the look of it make it well worth watching.

Love it, and yeah, it probably would be my pick for Pearce's best, with Memento very close.
Pearce's career has been really weird and unique, with a mixture of mainstream successful/unsuccessful attempts as a leading man with more independent fare, that has now settled for a comfortable place as a dependable supporting actor. I'm not dissing him, but I just find it unique, especially if you compare it to someone like Russell Crowe (also an Aussie, also had his breakthrough in L.A. Haven't seen any version of Count, or read the book. I should remedy that.

You should. The Great Richard Harris is in the film as well.

Pearce was the highlight for me in The Count of Monte Cristo.
Seen a couple of versions of that story including Richard Chamberlain 1975's version when I was a kid and remember being very caught up in it. Would love to check out the 1934 version with Robert Donat.
I wouldn't mind reading the book as well. Having read Dumas' The Three Musketeers a decade or more ago.

Oh I KNOW! They make such amazing films.
Don't think I've ever read an entire deSade novel. Have read a number of snippets though back in the day.

I have 120 of Sodom and Other Writings. There are some quotes by him that some people should never read. They are over the top explicit. I have Philosophy in the Bedroom and Justine as well. Seen some of the older films too. Salo is one of my favorite foreign-language films.

out of my top 5 (6) films, 2 are Cinematic Masterpieces in my eyes - The Wicker Man (1973) and A Clockwork Orange (1971), 2 are directed by Ridley Scott - Kingdom of Heaven (2005) and Gladiator (2000) and 2 are Classic Novels to Cinema - The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) and Pride and Prejudice (2005)

I used to have Justine, a friend insisted that it was THE starting point for delving into deSade. No idea what became of the book.

There are many adaptions of his book to film for Justine.

The book is really amazing, but it is a very long read.
I would love someone to make a miniseries of it to do all of the subplots justice. They really have to streamline things to make it feature-film length.
