Same as was done in previous tournaments of this type.....
Join in and drop out as you please
No set number of nominations, nominate on the fly
Max song duration: 10 minutes
No individual matches means no random or host 'fixing' the matches
Only one nomination per person per 'round'
Only those with songs nominated in any 'round' are eligible to vote; except the 'Final' where all those that have previously nominated a song in the month may vote should they wish
Every couple of days will be a new 'round' where any and all newly nominated songs are up against each other. As soon as voting starts for one 'round' nominations will be accepted for the next 'round'.
Players vote by ranking all the songs in that 'round' from 1 (their favourite) to n (their least favourite). Songs will be awarded points based on their positional ranking in each vote (number of points will depend on the number of songs contesting the 'round' - if 10 songs #1 song would get 10 points, #10 song would get 1 point).
The winning song from each 'round' (or songs in the case of a tie) goes through to the 'Final' at the end of the month.

Nominations for Round 1 welcome - open until 9am IST/BST on October 1st.
Mine:
O Children - Ruins (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HUtDnYR6TCw)
Max song duration: 10 minutes
There's a song I've wanted to nominate multiple times but it's annoyingly 10:11 long so it barely fails the rules check :D

Sorry for the delay! Yeah, I think I can manage, if someone can give me a capsule summary of how this works/what's required of me and all that.
Basically, each person who joins nominates one song per round. (The nominated song can't be a previous tournament winner, (listed in the first post of this thread), and it can't be longer than 10 minutes.)
When the nominations for the round close, the host (Chypmunk) posts all of the nominations.
Everyone who joined listens to all of the nominations, and ranks them in order from their favorite to their least favorite. (We post our lists in the thread.)
While waiting for everyone to vote, anyone who wants to join the next round, posts their nomination for the next round.
Then the host calculates the results and announces the winner of the round.
The host then posts the next round, and we continue with rounds until the end of the month. (You can join as many or as few rounds as you want, but you can only vote in the rounds that you nominate a song, and in the final round if you've nominated a song in any round of the tournament.)
The last round is all of this tournament's rounds winners. We rank these songs, and then the tournament winner is announced.
Then we all wait patiently for the next tournament. :)

Thanks gbg!
So, to start, I literally just pick one song, any song, and post it here? No theme or anything, just anything I either like or (probably better) think others might like?

So, to start, I literally just pick one song, any song, and post it here?
Yep, post it at any point before 9am IST/BST (that's 4am Eastern Time I believe) on 1st October and it'll be entered into Round 1. Preferably in an external link format (like gbg and I have) if you can, if not just imbed the video and I'll format the link (like I do for HM).
No theme or anything, just anything I either like or (probably better) think others might like?
If you want to theme your own songs then feel free to do so (honeykid has done this in the past) but that's entirely optional and there's no overall theme. The only limitation is no song can be over ten minutes in duration.

Thanks, Captain Spaulding for the reference. I miss everything.
So I've thought long and hard on the the subject of what tracks to sacrifice up to the MOFO music gawds that are never pleased with my offerings. This month? I say screw it. I'll throw my own themed party this time around, and the celebration is a selection of soundtracks from the 80s. Right out of the gate, Real Life...

Inspired by a recently watched (and fondly remembered) B-movie story of a local, small town boy fighting all odds against big corporation and sellout commercialism in the form of BMX freestyle, I nominate Real Life - Send me an Angel (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0R6WIbx8ysE), from the 1986 movie, Rad. This movie taught me that I will never be coordinated enough to even pull off a wheelie, or have enough money to buy a BMX with pegs or proper rotor. This song and music sequence within the movie taught me of love, the lengths one must go to earn it, and the devastating cold reality of heartache and loss when Cru races off into the night before Christian is able to push through the student crowd to ask his name. Lori Loughlin? I never cared that you bribed you kid's way into college. I still love you.

Dusty Springfield - Spooky (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f7QzxYAjgNc)
Toto - Rosanna (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qmOLtTGvsbM)
Let's do this. No noisy blowers in the apartment before next week so I can actually listen to these. No promises I'll do every round.
R1 nomination:
PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=87X273VgeRA)
By all rights, Bowie probably should have been my first nom. I must admit that I did consider a track-by-track submission of the Labyrinth soundtrack album. I thought better of it, on reconsideration, as that would have been unfair to all other noms and would have most certainly defeated the purpose of the competition.

If this one is blocked for anybody, I guess any alternative is fine. This one is just much better quality than most of the others, so I wanted those who could listen to it to have the best quality possible.
I just nominated the song that's been stuck in my head for the past three weeks.

For anyone working with "www" type song links (as opposed to the "youtu.be" variety) that doesn't know how to make a song link external (rather than imbedding the video):
External linking is easy:
Copy the url of the song link you want (it has to be a free to access link - most of the time players tend to use YouTube)
Type the text of the song or whatever in a response ... i.e. "The Beatles - In My Life"
Highlight the text
In the list of optional actions at the top of the response box (where italics, bold, underline etc. are) click the picture of a globe with 2 links of a chain underneath it
In the box that comes up paste the url you copied earlier
Edit the "www" in the link to "m"
Click ok and it will wrap the HTML for the link around the text and that's it
You can verify it looks right and even that they work by previewing the post.
For example here's the one for The Beatles - In My Life (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqpysaAo4BQ)
I'd appreciate if those using "www" type links would try to do the above as it just makes it that little bit easier for the lazy dog that is otherwise known as myself ;)
Thanks,
Chyp

Here are the results of the 'lazy dog' jury......
O. Children - Ruins
Underappreciated goth gem imo
Dusty Springfield - Spooky
Classic choon - looks like hk might be theming again this time around
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Big F1 fan here
PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact
Well suited to my mood today
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
A welcome burst of energy as I'm feeling about as energetic as a week-old fart in a bath today
John Anderson - Seminole Wind
Don't think I've ever listened to any of his before, quite liked it
Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens
Usual decent hooks from a group I quite like
Girlschool - Race with the Devil
One of the better tunes in their armoury (saw them live back in the day)
Real Life - Send me an Angel
Easily the best song Yin has entered into this tourney thus far
toconoma - relive
Grew on me the more it went on
Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream
Usual easy listen from Joe
Aseul - Fisher
Quite liked it, easy listen
Toto - Rosanna
Not being 'Africa' worked to its advantage but it's still Toto
Being down the list doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like it ..... quite a strong round imo.

Dusty Springfield - Spooky - Yes, I'm theming again. Obvious from the start this time. :D
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified - It's a nice pastiche? Affectionate tribute? I don't know, but I like it.
Girlschool - Race with the Devil - Quality from a band which doesn't get listened to as often as it should.
toconoma - relive - A minute in and I'm liking this. If it doesn't outstay its welcome expect to see this nearer the top than the bottom.
Real Life - Send me an Angel - 80's euro pop stylee? Yes please.
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - For a UK F1 fan, this is always going to do well. Unless I find lots of new songs I really like here I can't see this not doing well for me this round.
Toto - Rosanna - Classic. But suffers when it's not the chorus.
O. Children - Ruins - Very 80's goth. Not exactly my thing, but not bad.
Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens - This is pretty pleasant.
Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream - It's Joe Cocker. It sounds like Joe Cocker. It's ok and that's about it really.
Aseul - Fisher - On another day I think this would've done better with me. Today is not that day though.
John Anderson - Seminole Wind § (alt vsn if needed) - At least it's not last. Though that may upset you. :D
PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact - Too much too long today.

Completely up to you but everybody else does and plenty of people don't automatically vote their own song as #1 in their ranking which is why I can't just assume where anyone would rank their own song.

Ok, I'll add in your votes for R1 in the spreadsheet with your own song in 13th on your ballot - please do include your own song in your rankings for future rounds for purposes of transparency though and don't feel you have to place them last in all future rounds should you have a change of heart with regards voting for your own songs.

Focus - Hocus Pocus (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RFDW9b_ejfI)
Will rank after work this evening.
1 Toto - Rosanna - Putting this is first to fly in the face of the Toto haters. Sure, they bring the cheese, but when you round up all the band members, including their work with other projects, they have over 200 Grammy nominations. Also, this song is great.
2 Real Life - Send me an Angel - Excellent 80s synth pop.
3 Dusty Springfield - Spooky - Can't rank this any lower. Great stuff.
4 O. Children - Ruins - Above average goth track. I like it!
5 Fleetwood Mac - The Chain - Classic, but a bit overplayed at this point.
6 Aseul - Fisher - Reminds me of old-skool Orbital, which reminds me of my rave days, which reminds me of simpler, care-free times.
7 PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact - Some nasty riffs in this tune, but I ike the vocal in the verses, but the song is a bit too noisy and chaotic for my taste. Still good, though.
8 Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens - This is a good round, as even this far down the list, I still like this song quite a bit.
9 Girlschool - Race with the Devil - Rockin tune!
10 The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified - Cool, if really derivative, song. Still, it's one of those 90s bands that was acting like they were a 70s band. Kind of gimmicky.
11 Toconoma - Relive - Kind of fun, but I wasn't feeling it.
12 John Anderson - Seminole Wind - I just can't get around the twangy sounds of some country, and this is definitely one of those songs. Can't do it.
13 Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream - But I would still rather listen to the above country song than this, which is straight up elevator music to me. Sorry! I like other Cocker songs, but not this one.
Round 2 NOM
Obscura - Emergent Evolution (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PLe11__fu4I)
Another extreme metal track for folks to send to the bottom of their lists. At least it has pretty sections... ;)
Oh, we rank our own, too? I guess I can see that, though I'm pretty likely to rank my own really highly since I expect I'll usually be picking songs I already love. Maybe I'll mix it up with some weirder ones I don't love as much, then. Anyway!

A little too distracted to do write-ups on each but maybe next time. I really liked "Seminole Wind" though, the strings in that are great. And I agree, this was great, I can't imagine it's normal that even the ones towards the bottom of the list would be enjoyable.

Nominate whatever you fancy as long as it's under ten minutes long. It's nice that there's usually a variety of tastes involved in these so 'weirder' stuff can sometimes do quite well.
P.s. Don't forget the voting and nomination windows run concurrently so if you want to have a song in Round 2 you'll need to put one forward within the next 14 1/2 hours or so ;)

1. John Anderson - Seminole Wind
2. Girlschool - Race with the Devil
- Never heard of these girls before, but I'm all the way in.
3. The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
- This song was in some video game I used to play a long time ago, I just don't remember which one. It's a fun time.
4. Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens
- so this is what Yoda listens to.
5. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
- I've never been able to get into Fleetwood Mac for whatever reason. I should try listening to Rumours again.
6. PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact
- Sometimes a problem with this type of music and vocals is that the music is so good that when they start doing their vocal stuff, it feels unnecessary. I'm still not sold on this style of vocals, so I was totally down to let that music ride before the fella piped in. It's also hilarious to read the lyrics, because they always say some silly stuff like "In a world of sin, of sh*t". I love the music, but do all these fellas have to be total edgelords?
7. Dusty Springfield - Spooky
- The lyrics seem kinda dumb, but I'm digging the vibe.
8. O. Children - Ruins
- This song reminds me of the "we have it at home meme". This is the we have Joy Division at home.
9. Aseul - Fisher
- Probably not for me, but pretty good for something not for me.
10. toconoma - relive
- Way too long. It has its moments, but I spent most of the time wanting it to end.
11. Toto - Rosanna
- Times were different.
12. Real Life - Send me an Angel
- Times were different.
13. Joe Cocker - Edge of a Dream
- Not big on Joe Cocker
Alright, I'll pick another song today!

Not a problem, I've taken to reminding whoever hasn't voted on Day 1 as a matter of course on Day 2 anyway. All you really have to remember is 'voting also means nominating' ;)

That's a good rule, vote and nominate at the same time. I didn't realize they were so close, but that makes sense.

Round 1
1. Girlschool - Race with the Devil
(Boasts one of those killer riffs that desperately makes me wish I could play guitar. Until recently, I was mostly only familiar with Girlschool through their associations with Motorhead, but I've been really digging their catalogue lately. Their sound is tougher than most all-girl rock groups.)
2. O. Children - Ruins
(Already knew within the first few seconds that I was going to dig this. One of the better goth tunes I've heard. Adding it to my playlist.)
3. Christine and the Queens - Doesn't Matter
(A really well constructed pop song, sonically and lyrically. Surprised by how much I enjoyed this.)
4. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
(Since both my parents are big fans of Fleetwood, I probably heard too much of their music growing up to the point that I eventually tuned them out, but no doubt this is an all-time great song.)
5. Dusty Springfield - Spooky
(Such a sexy voice, and a seasonally appropriate nomination.)
6. Panzerfaust - The Faustian Pact
(Feels more accessible than most black metal, but it was so long that I had to deal with two separate ad breaks. WTF, YouTube? Don't you know it's extremely dangerous to interrupt a demonic incantation?)
7. John Anderson - Seminole Wind
(Hasn't Mr. Anderson received the memo? It's now "Washington Football Wind.")
8. Toto - Rosanna
(Somehow the cheesiness feels like an attribute instead of a detriment. I find it hard not to smile while listening to this song, though it does start to overstay its welcome a bit by the end.)
9. Toconoma - Relive
(Fun and danceable, but in the end it doesn't amount to more than a glorified jam session.)
10. Aseul - Fisher
(Perfect background music, which I guess is a bit of a back-handed compliment.)
11. Real Life - Send Me an Angel
(The chorus, particularly those soaring angelic background vocals, is what sinks this for me, which is strange since most of these 80's groups excelled at catchy choruses if nothing else.)
12. Joe Cocker - Edge of a Dream
(I like Cocker's voice for the most part, but this just sounds so dated and corny, like a slow-motion montage in a made-for-television 80's romance.)
13. The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
(Sorta like listening to Greta Van Fleet when you could just listen to Led Zeppelin instead.)

Round 1
7. John Anderson - Seminole Wind
(Hasn't Mr. Anderson received the memo? It's now "Washington Football Wind.")
This just in: John Anderson has apologized for his role in the song "Seminole Wind". The old, white, male singer claims that he's "deeply sorry" for "eliminating indigenous voices" and "voices of color". The alt-right singer also claims that he "wanted to bring attention to the plight of the Seminole peoples" but he "[realizes] now that [his/her] overzealousness to do so has caused more pain for the true and rightful owners of the Floridian lands". He will undergo racial justice training and a crucifixion to atone for the sins of his/her whiteness.
Round 1
13. The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
(Sorta like listening to Greta Van Fleet when you could just listen to Led Zeppelin instead.)
All evidence supports the idea that this should be my thoughts on this song too, but I think the nostalgia of Madden 05 on my PS2 swayed me.
Round 2:
Foals - On the Luna (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hjuW7d7OZNE)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjuW7d7OZNE
Round 1 (but technically, 1 is pretty straight. So. Iderno.)
Dusty Springfield - Spooky
Near perfect. Smokey smooth voice and equally smooth groove. That voice against the bass and driving electric piano can play forever and never dry out. The brass and sax give it just enough sexy without crossing a line, but we all know where those flirts go. Especially once the reverb kicks in. me-yeow.
Real Life - Send me an Angel
Well, obviously. Seriously, do none of you have beating hearts?! How could you have watched the movie Rad and NOT have cried during this scene?! Yes, I expect that you have all watched this movie as part of your agreements to participate in this Song of October list. *bows head in solemn respect and honor to the lis...* WTF people?! I know it’s not Bowie, but this should be higher up in your lists!! I’m looking at you, Spaulding. Well. I’m looking at your avatar. Not currently. I’m still typing this bit. BUT I WILL AFTER I POST THIS!!!! With stern eyes….. It’s not MY #1 because of my crush on Springfield’s voice. That and I’m too humble to place my nom first. This round.
Doesn't Matter - Christine and the Queens
Nice. Intro drum kick and claps remind me of The Ting Tings' That's Not My Name (just for a second or two, though), but the voice cut right through that association. I love this voice and synth bass that creeps in a bit later. Layers keep building, keeping interest up. If the movie, Drive, was just a BIT more upbeat (like 1/10th of whatever unit of measure defines upbeat), I would expect this on that alternate reality soundtrack. The lyrics are dark enough though. Pretty good track. I kinda think Doubledemin might dig this too. Isn't he into Drive/sountrack? I feel like he and I bonded over that Raised by Wolves season chat. That thread that you didn't take part in. After starting it.... *cough* (lol, in case that's not obvious)
Aseul – Fisher
A bit slow to get in, but I’m digging it. Lovely simple chord progression the vocals just whisper around. That note she sings and drops in “come on” (or whatever the lyrics are) is just a nice subtle dissonance to break the pattern of it all. On repeat now and I can hear that in the intro. That snare though! I keep wanting to hear it drop out into a drum-and-bass break.
PANZERFAUST - The Faustian Pact
Hey. I would have loved this when I was younger. I'd say I'm an old fogey, but I guess that would mean I'd stick by my younger ways and I'll still very much love this. Hm. I'm confused now on where I stand vs. where I should stand. This song deserves contemplation. I dig that snare about 2:40 in. Nice syncopation. Song is tight though. Very clean mix. The stuff I used to listen was mostly just white noise at a point. Nice.
toconoma – Relive
lol, this is pretty fun all around. Tight. I have several friends who would have been all over this in college. Bass sits very nicely in the mix. Curious, I did a quick search and found Highwind. Nice stuff, really. Thanks for the new reference!
Girlschool - Race with the Devil
No triggers here! That will make sense in a few nom comments down. Maybe that’s due, in part, to the country of origin? I don’t know, but I will find my anchor here (again, more sense comes later in the list). Speaking of......
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
I've never been much of a MAC fan. Well, not since the early 90s probably when Apple was innovative. Now it's just a brand wh...wait. Hey. wrong Mac. Stevie Nicks' voice always got my attention, but I guess this was part of that transitional era of music for me coming out of my dad's selection and finding my own. This was more on his side of the wall.
John Anderson - Seminole Wind
Not a country fan, but this is pretty good for the style. Looking back, this song feels out of place in its decade, considering the twang and dance vibe of other pop country of the time. I can see this being a bridge song pulling a few curious rock fans in, by way of the Chris Isaak novelty of the time. I had to look this up to see where it actually sat on release. It peaked at #2 on US Hot Country Songs, apparently. I can buy that.
The Mooney Suzuki - Alive & Amplified
Wonky video. Cute stuff with the flowers blooming on the scream. I enjoyed the intro but that chorus is grating. Everything else is a bit funky, and that's fun. Just feels a bit choppy in the changes.
O. Children - Ruins
Great music and intro, but dude's voice throws me off the trail. Bits remind me of an unmentionable title from Spiderbait, but her voice is hawt.
Joe Cocker - Edge Of A Dream
I love Joe Cocker’s voice, but sadly I’m not a fan of this particular song. I guess it’s the 80’s of it. Gimme something from the With a Little Help from My Friends album and I’m there with a Bic in the air.
Toto – Rosanna
Nope. Shame on you (you and that other cat bringing up Fleetwood Mac) for digging up my 80’s radio pop abandonment issues between me and my dad!!! lol. Ugh. There’s at least 10 per competition so I should be used to it by now, huh? One day, I suppose, I will get to a place where I can listen to these songs without flashbacks of being left with a couple of bucks in quarters by the Galaga cabinet while he goes off hitting on bartenders. Hey. This is good. This is therapy. Still a pretty groovy bass line. Seems a theme in this list. NO! I will not enjoy this. But that creepy Jets vs. Sharks Roadhouse style, homoerotic gangland dance-off near end of the video was unexpected. I really don’t remember that. Hm. I digress. Decent guitar solo. Too much perm.
Round 2 nom incoming....
Round 2 Nom (getting there)
As I'm currently working up my personal top 100, I found a lovely and sweet sleeper of a movie that I adored when I was a kid. It doesn't at all seem a likely pick, given the cast, but for some reason it connected with me deeply. Even now, when I watch it, I get all emotional. Jason Robards brought a bit of legitimacy to the cast and, surprisingly, played well on screen with.... Feldman. Yes. That Feldman. Corey Feldman, of the infamous two Coreys.
In keeping with my 80's themed soundtrack nom, this submission sits nicely in a later scene of Dream a Little Dream. When I hear the opening guitar and that twangy little hammer-on on the fourth pick, I always have to pause to give it the respect and love this heart-breaking song is due. The movie is probably silly for most, and if you didn't grow up with it in the context of that decade, it may never reach you the way it did me. Still. It sits well with an excellent supporting soundtrack.
Otis Redding - Dreams to Remember (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MOwNCKZeNOE)
Sorry in advance for all the pinging you'll have to do for me, I'm new and busy and forgetful.
Don't feel too bad. I have to get at least 10 a day just to see an email notice to remind me to check my msgs reminding me to post my votes. Even then it's 50/50 if I remember to add my next nom. =\

Tami Neilson - You Were Mine
Ticks all the boxes for me, I'll be looking into her catalogue
Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Waiting for the End
Simple but very nicely composed and effective, another I might look into
BB King - The Thrill is Gone
Classic choon from one of the blues greats
Otis Redding - Dreams to Remember
Mellifluous tune from a soul superstar
G-Schmitt - Cathedral Junky
It's all about the bass - mixed it up just enough imo
Ricky Van Shelton - Somebody Lied
Nice vocal and I do enjoy a good downbeat country song
Pastel Ghost - Clouds
A bit like OMD with a heavy bassline - me likes
Sadistik - Cotard's Syndrome
I've no expectations with this nom, he's not always the most accessible so I expect little love
Pusha T ft. Kendrick Lamar - Nosetalgia
Decent, not listened to any Pusha T before
Foals - On the Luna
Wasn't keen at the start but it did grow on me as it went on
LIVE - Lightning Crashes
Decent but not particularly memorable for me
Obscura - Emergent Evolution
Mixed bag for me, somewhat enjoyable
Focus - Hocus Pocus
Technically it's very accompished but it's just not my type of jam really (and that's partly why)
Not quite as strong as R1 but another pretty solid round imo and again being down the order doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't at least somewhat liked.

Rounds been up for 6 1/2 hours and no votes from Yin yet so I guess it must be time for a reminder ynwtf :D
1 BB King - The Thrill is Gone - No fair putting songs like this in the tournament. This will bump my entry to #2 on my list.
2 Obscura - Emergent Evolution - Technical death metal that is still fairly catchy.
3 Otis Redding - Dreams to Remember - Should probably beat #2, but I will give that slot to the metal tracks today.
4 Tami Neilson - You Were Mine - Great set of pipes here. Not the most original in approach, but she kills it for what it is.
5 Foals - On the Luna - I have liked both of Yoda's tracks a lot so far. I dig this style of music quite a bit.
6 Pastel Ghost - Clouds - Love me some synths!
7 G-Schmitt - Cathedral Junky - Pretty smooth stuff.
8 LIVE - Lightning Crashes - I like this band a lot, and I saw them live multiple times in the 90s. Today, they don't resonate as much with me.
9 Pusha T ft. Kendrick Lamar - Nosetalgia - These guys are good rappers, but this track isn't one of the better ones I have heard from Pusha.
10 Focus - Hocus Pocus - Much prefer the Gary Hoey instrumental version that changes out the annoying yodeling for slick guitar lines.
11 Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks - Waiting for the End - Didn't do much for me, but I appreciate the Halloween theme.
12 Sadistik - Cotard's Syndrome - Wasn't feeling it.
13 Ricky Van Shelton - Somebody Lied - You all know where stuff like this places for me! As usual, I fully expect GB to plop my track down at 13, as well! Seems to be a theme for us. ;)

Where are we at now, 3? Not that anyone can reply before I submit this nom. I am torn on this one. I know what movie I want to source, but I've struggled for the better part of a 7-day week on finalizing a selection for your selective palates. I was able to narrow things down to two options: Manhattan and the one I've reluctantly selected. While I find Andrea & Hot Mink adorable, the opening number of this particular soundtrack may no't ring enough bells for those of you who have seen this movie.
I probably caught this movie around the age of 10. I'm guessing. I remember talking to my uncle about it one weekend. See, he was several years older than me. Well, he still is, so no don't get caught up in condolences. The prick is still around. Anyway, he was still in high school at the time and he was driving. We both shared an affinity for movies. For him, I guess it was probably just an excuse to get off the farm. He was like an older brother that I never had, so if I could hang out with him watching flicks, then bonus. He was driving down the dirt road one day and I was throwing movie titles out, asking if he had seen them. I shouted, "Revenge of the Nerds!?" He laughed and replied, "Heh... yeah. Dude got laid, didn't he?" I looked on in confusion wondering what chickens had to do with the movie..... He said, "Nevermind."
So! Without additional rambling, I present for your listening ear pleasures what should be an easily recognizable track from the classic 1984 teen raunch-comedy, Revenge of the Nerds.

Anna von Hausswolff - Källans återuppståndelse
Doubt she'll do well here but I do like a woman that handles an organ with aplomb
kokushoku elegy - yume no naru koro
Musically this is more up my street
Rex Defunctis - Alucarda
A decent enough opener for the round
Kite - True Colors
Not entirely sure about the vocals but it was still a fairly good listen
REM - Electrolite
REM very rarely disappoint but equally they very rarely make me sit up and listen
The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra
Would have possibly moved up the pecking order if it were the shorter single version
Ozzy Osbourne - I Don't Wanna Stop
Not terrible but not Ozzy at his finest imo
Electric Owls - Magic Show
Started off as if it might be interesting but sadly not really my cup of tea
T.G. Sheppard - Do You Wanna Go To Heaven
Ok I guess but won't be memorable for me
Sidewalks And Skeletons - Blood
Sorry, but those abrasive moments just don't do it for me
Gleaming Spires - Are You Ready for the Sex Girls
Really sorry but I assume some history/affinity with the film improves this track somehow and I simply don't have any
I'm starting to remember why I don't normally do comments lol.

1 Kite - True Colors - I have entered this before. Let's see if we can get it to win this time around!
2 The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra - Classic Steve Miller track!
3 Electric Owls - "Magic Show" - I like the production on this one. In a different round, maybe would have placed a bit lower. Alas...
4 Rex Defunctis - Alucarda - Not in the mood for doom today, but still ranks pretty high for me.
5 Gleaming Spires - Are You Ready for the Sex Girls - I am in fact ready for the sex girls.
6 Ozzy Osbourne - I Don't Wanna Stop - Not a great Ozzy tune, but this round was weak overall for me, so here it sits.
7 Anna von Hausswolff - Källans återuppståndelse - Better suited for film score, methinks.
8 REM - Electrolite - This REM tune was a miss for me.
9 kokushoku elegy - yume no naru koro - I like the music quite a bit, but the vocalist is slightly sharp throughout, which set my teeth on edge the entire time.
10 T.G. Sheppard ~ Do You Wanna Go To Heaven - We know how this goes, but it wasn't last this time!
11 Sidewalks And Skeletons - Blood - If I hadn't watched the video, this might have placed a slot or two above this. Alas...

Ozzy Osbourne - I Don't Wanna Stop § alt link if needed - It's Ozzy and it's different for today. It was a shoo-in with me anyway.
The Steve Miller Band - Abracadabra - It's familiar and I like it, but even I made the mistake of choosing the longer version. Bad decision for this round.
Kite - True Colors - I wish it was about 3 minutes long rather than 5 but it's OK.
kokushoku elegy - yume no naru koro - I quite like this but don't really know why. A bit shorter and it'd probably be higher.
Sidewalks And Skeletons - Blood - It just happened. it'll probably do well with me for not being bland or soft.
Gleaming Spires - Are You Ready for the Sex Girls - It's 80's and I love the 80's. Lucky to finish this high but it's been a bad round for me.
Rex Defunctis - Alucarda - Not something I really listen to. It just plays while I sit there. Not unpleasant just not my thing.
T.G. Sheppard ~ Do You Wanna Go To Heaven - It's not going to be last because it's got a bit of life to it.
Anna von Hausswolff - Källans återuppståndelse - Sadly all these are kind of blending into one. It's odd how sometimes we all seem to produce a round like this every tournament? We must be picking up on cues from somewhere.
REM - Electrolite - Should be called Nightswimminglite. Again, nice, but nothing which stands out.
Electric Owls - "Magic Show" - I think my brain has trickled down the back of my neck and, while it's not the fault of this song, it's the straw which broke the camels back and I'm sorry to whoever nom'ed it because it doesn't deserve it.

More an Ozzy fan than REM. Hit or miss but I think I just heard enough REM in my teens to last a lifetime, unfortunately.
Sidewalks And Skeletons - Blood

My next nom requires NO introduction. Movie or track.
Prince - Partyman
No need, but dude. IT's PRINCE!!!!!! from BATMAN (1989)!?!?!!! I fought long and hard with myself on whether this or Batdance gets my nom this round. I figured Batdance might still be overplayed, but it is such a great track. I was too young for earlier Prince with Purple Rain, but with the Batman soundtrack and me crawling JUST into the lower edge of my teen years, Batdance woke me up to a new musical reality. Samples, funk, bass lines, and grooves that just don't stop. OKOKOK who am I kidding. I change my nom. It is now Batdance.
Got that, @Chyp?
I've seen the future and it will be.....

Seriously. I try to avoid all this, but I can't! ooh yeah... oooh yeah. Check it out. Devils, moonlight, dancing, what's not to love? VOCAL HARMONIES speaking. THIS COMP NEEDS AN ENEMA!!!!

I'll pop back in.
Usually when I nominate country songs, it's me trying to find something Captain Spaulding would be into. "Seminole Wind" was an exception, because it was a huge song and I kinda figured he'd have heard it before. The next song I'm nominating is one I'm sure he's heard, but I think he's a fan of this guy too.
Cody Jinks - Somewhere in the Middle (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc8D6bOmUkE&ab_channel=lumaz71)

Round 4
1. Cody Jinks - Somewhere in the Middle
(Possibly the best thing going in country music today.)
2. Nick Shoulders - Too Old to Dream
(I definitely think he's a bit of an acquired taste, which perhaps explains why I wasn't too taken with him at first when jiraffejustin nominated "Snakes & Waterfalls" in a past tournament, or maybe I was too distracted by the mullet and yodeling to appreciate that I was witnessing a modern-day country music unicorn.)
3. Blues Saraceno - Judgement Day
(The lack of musical variance means this song would likely grow stale on replays, but as a one-time listen it suits my tastes quite well.)
4. Buck-Tick - Dress
(Normally the vocal style in these Japanese rock songs is a deal breaker for me, but the vocals were a highlight for me here. Good song, mellow vibes, though a tad overlong.)
5. Buzzcocks - Fiction Romance
(Wish the scales were tilted a little more toward punk than pop, but a solid listen nonetheless.)
6. Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters
(Mostly survives on nostalgia nowadays.)
7. Prince - Batdance
(Countless times I've danced with the devil in the pale moonlight, but this is my first time ever watching the "Batdance" music video, so this was a special joy. I should dress up as Prince's half-Batman, half-Joker for Halloween.)
8. Band of Skulls - Wanderluster
(Lacks that extra something to separate it from similar sounding songs/bands, but I wouldn't turn the station if it came on the radio.)
9. Lionel Richie - Running with the Night
(Sounds very dated and corny nowadays, but still possesses a certain charm.)
10. Wardell - Opossum
(Spielberg's children, eh? I'm only familiar with the unattractive one who's trying to be a porn star. This indie rock sound seems a bit cut and paste, but it's a decent, airy listen.)
11. Weezer - Island in the Sun
(Never been a fan.)
12. Kermit the Frog - Rainbow Connection
(What's green and slimy and smells like bacon? Kermit's finger.)

- I went from thinking that country music was basically dead to listening to Chris Stapleton to listening to Sturgill Simpson to Cody Jinks to finding this world of country music under the surface and seeing it grow even from that point has been awesome. Nick Shoulders is another example of country music being the best, most diverse, most interesting, and most captivating genre of music going.
3. Prince - Batdance
- If I had a trillion dollars and a time machine, one of the things I would do is go back to this time and commission a Prince lead Batman music film in the style of The Wall where I give Prince full control. Give me 90 minutes of this chaos.
4. Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters
- I've never seen Ghostbusters. The line "bustin' makes me feel good" is the reason this song should be lauded.
5. Buzzcocks - Fiction Romance
- I enjoy the mix of pop and punk here, it's a fun, head bobbing time.
6. Blues Saraceno - Judgement Day
- This feels like the sort of song that will get a pop out of me the first time I hear it, but maybe not stick around for the long haul. I did enjoy listening to it and following the story, so kudos for that.
7. Lionel Richie - Running With the Night
- It was a different time.
8. Wardell - Opossum
- Sounds like an okay indie song from when I was in high school. This came out 3 years after I graduated, so I'm guessing the Spielberg kids are about the same age as me? Quick google search. Sasha was born in 90, Theo in 88, I was born in 91, sounds about right.
9. buck-tick - dress
- Maybe I'll find some Japanese rock other than Les Rallizes Denudes that I'll like.
10. Band of Skulls - Wanderluster
- it's fine
11. Kermit the Frog - Rainbow Connection
- I feel like this song would probably be more effective for people who aren't as dead inside as myself.
12. Weezer - Island In The Sun
- So, embarrassing story time: when I was a teenager, I would download porn and hide it in a folder titled "Weezer - Blue Album" because I knew nobody would look in there. I'm thankful I don't have to share a computer anymore. Also, man, I was a little degenerate.

Surprisingly, this soundtrack has a few great and varied song options. I thought it would be difficult to pick one of three serious contenders, but given the recent events of the week it seems only appropriate to bring this nom to the forefront. The 1985 John Cusack teen rom/com, Better Off Dead might have been my first introduction to Cusack. One of my favorite flicks of his, this one laid the foundation for my current sense of humor. Blame Savage Steve Holland for that, I guess. Hm... I'm drifting off point. In honor of the late, great, Mr. Eddie Van Halen, my round 5 nom is....

R6 Nomination:

Some great songs in this round!
1 Lights - From All Sides - Lovely song from the excellent Lights release, Little Machines.
2 the cure - just like heaven - Total classic.
3 Lucifer - Midnight Phantom - I've never heard of this band. Going to check out more!
4 Lacuna Coil - Layers Of Time - I have always liked Lacuna Coil. The middle section of this track is catchy af.
5 Florence + the Machine - What Kind of Man - Excellent band.
6 Van Halen - Everybody Wants Some - I like many VH tunes, but I like this one a bit less.
7 Yellow Days - A Little While - Interesting listen
8 Manowar - Blood of My Enemies - Tune is pretty good, but the quality kind of ruined it for me.
9 Woodbrain - Dig - Not sure what to make of this one.
10 The Velvet Underground - Heroin - I usually like Lou Reed, but this is a total miss for me.
11 The Low Anthem - Apothecary Love - I actually had trouble deciding which of these last two to put in last...
12 Keith Whitley - Don't Close Your Eyes - ...because I couldn't stand either one! ;)

This round had some classics. "Just Like Heaven", "Heroin", and "Don't Close Your Eyes" are basically the best I could ever hope for in a top 3 of songs I didn't nominate in a round. Then when I look and see none of them were nominated by Captain Spaulding, I'm even more surprised. Yeah, this was just a good round. You snatched that Ghostbusters track in an earlier round ;)
That's cool though. This next nom is from the same motion picture soundtrack and is a stronger song, at least in part. This track heralded the release of ghosts onto New York City by way of Walter Peck's regulatory power trip. Starting around 2:20 of this track, the movie's tone took a sinister shift and MIGHT be one of the first moments I became aware of how music affects mood for a movie. That was kind of a revelation to me at the time. I am listening to this in the background now and I still get spooky chills. I don't know why the second half of this song is so different from the first, but it is what it is and I expect this one to rank fairly low for it. That said, you might as well skip on to the good stuff at 2:20.
Close your eyes and remember the first time you saw those lens flare special effect spirit "bulbs" slowly arcing up and out from the Ghostbuster' station, now free to terrorize NYC citizens. Cats and dogs. Sleeping together. Keymaster Vinz Clortho searching for his Gatekeeper, Zuul. It's the end of the world as we know it..... please..... please.... I believe it's magic-magic....
From the 1984 movie, Ghostbusters, I offer up Mick Smiley - Magic (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hK2EUIYiWXU).

Kind of shocked to hear a Bob Dylan song performed by himself that I actually like. Even more shocked it's taking my #1 spot. .lol:

The Oath - Night Child § (alt link if needed) - Now that was really good. Excellent choice. There's going to have to be some gold below this to pip it to my #1.
Napoleon XIV - They're Coming To Take Me Away - I've always liked this song. It's silly but there is something unsettling about the vocal. Obviously madness, asylums and whatnot fit my theme well. I have another song coming up which does something similar.
Harvey Danger - Cream and Bastards Rise - I'm really liking this.
Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody - I think most here know my feelings about Bob. However, this is the best thing from him I've ever heard. It's not even going to finish last. JJ, thank you for introducing me to a Dylan song I like. :)
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Sick Child - I quite like Siouxsie's sound, but I've never gotten into them really.
Meg Myers - Desire - I'm sure we've had this before. Good song.
Black Wire - The Face - Another decent track, not as catchy as the previous one though.
Radiohead - Karma Police - I only really like 4 or 5 Radiohead songs. This isn't one of them but it's not one I dislike much either.
Mission Of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver - This is ok.
Colter Wall - Cowpoke - I think the melancholy vibe might save this from last.
Mick Smiley - Magic - There's a reason they don't include this song before the 2 minute plus mark in the film. Just that bit and it'd be a bit higher.
George Strait - Last In Love - Last in love might also be last for me. It certainly is as I write this.

Not quite. It's 32 minutes of "suu-suu-suu-suu-suu-suu-suu-....." mixed with 6 minutes of the drum break from In the Air Tonight to mark the verse changes. Oh yeah, he also has the entire track background full of his youngin's baby gibberish blurbing out partial words at random like PUPWIES!! GWAPES!!! or the occassional UH OH POOPIE!!! I mean, I like kids as much as the next guy, but dude has issues.
*edit*
huh... was that a reference back to Black Betty?
I don't have time to air our band's internal politics. I'm compiling a list atm....

Ah, thanks for catching my spelling error on Susssudio. I meant to look it up, but I was too busy burning the rest of the band members in effigy with Ozzy Osssbourne's cat. Say, isn't this thread usually used for some tournament that features a multi-tiered cheating scheme meant to disqualify all my nominations?

You're welcome :p
I've actually no idea what this thread is normally used for - a few minutes ago was the first time I noticed it  :shifty:
Radiohead - Karma Police
I've always been a fan of Radiohead. Great example of their classic layering starting at 3:00 to the end, changing the tone completely dropping off into the dark digital transition to Fitter Happier, the following track on the album, OK Computer. Personally, both should be listened to back to back. Really, I think the entire album is more or less a concept album that deserves a straight listen start to finish.
Black Wire - The Face
Very close second spot. The more I listen to it, the more I enjoy it.
Harvey Danger - Cream and Bastards Rise
Nice bass distortion and structure. Dude sounds like Freddie Mercury at times. Based on how it opened, I kind of expected a standard pop 90's alt rock trip, but this surprised me some.
Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody
The Oath - Night Child
Has a very Velvet Revolver sound to it.
Meg Myers - Desire
I have to admit, this song kind of intimidates me. =\ The video is a bit too much, IMHO, as I think the song stands well enough on its own. Reading the comments in the YT feed, I feel it only appropriate to quote the top post, "This song almost got me pregnant, and I'm a guy."
Colter Wall - Cowpoke
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Sick Child
George Strait - Last In Love
Mission Of Burma - That's When I Reach For My Revolver
Mick Smiley - Magic
Agreed HK.
Napoleon XIV - They're Coming To Take Me Away
Round whatever this is now:
I know, I know. Where is Bowie, yn?! Well, fellow participants, I wanted to try to be fair and hold off as long as I could before releasing the Blackstar. Keeping in theme with my slew of 80's soundtrack picks, I can wait no longer to summon Jareth, the eternally lonely, hopeless romantic, and arguably pedo, Goblin King. He's in owl form and is about to rip the cage asunder.
Now that I'm older, I can look back on this 1986 Labyrinth soundtrack with wiser, more learned ears. I have experienced that that my then fifth-grader self couldn't comprehend---heartache. Well, that's not totally true. My first heartbreak came when I bought a valentine for a schoolgirl crush and showed it to my friends on the bus ride to school that morning. One of those "friends" stole it from my desk before the teacher's designated time for exchanging valentine gifts and gave it to her (my crush, not the teacher) in my place. Usually, we just bought packs of cards and put everyone's name on one and passed it on. Not for me. Apparently not for me that time either. Thanks, fwend! I'm not your fwend, GUY!!! (sorry, referencing other trains of thought there). Sad story goes on, he got her attention. I lost out. Eventually classmates discovered his insidious scheming and turned on him, but not before embarrassing me and ruining my day. Bonus round: dude has a dead-end job, smoked his entire life, and looks 20+ years older than my dad. Prick.
But hey! I'm off topic from Bowie's Underground and my current take on the lyrics. You see, I feel this song plays as a prequel, of sorts, for Jereth's beginning. Truth ... "it hurts like hell." It's only forever, not long at all... the lost and lonely. Underground. Nothing ever hurts again. No one can blame you. That's some pretty dark words-I'd-rather-not-type, but-deserve-more-respect-than-four-asterisks-can-provide. Hell, the video shows the goblins following the man down an alleyway knowing he's their king. After Hoggle lights his way in the darkness, "I'm underground." Accepting his place, he literally rips his earthly shell off and submits----never to hurt again. That is, until Sarah enters his world.
Huh. Deep, creepy and depressingly destructive concepts floating all around this Jim Henson "kids" flick. I'm glad this movie existed in my youth. It was a bit of a reality check for my oversensitive psyche.
(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qga12-bAS4A) David Bowie - Underground (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Qga12-bAS4A)
I cannot recommend this album enough. It's on my Spotify rotation, daily. Some days, I admit, it plays on repeat throughout the entire day. Should I be concerned? Surely, no one can blame me....

Round 6
1. Colter Wall - Cowpoke
(I'm always a sucker for steel guitars and harmonicas and the lonesome prairie images that their sound evokes. I also continue to be in awe of this dude's talent and youth. The unique timbre of his voice grows more impressive with each new release.)
2. Meg Myers - Desire
(I've nominated this in the past, so obviously I'm a fan. One of the hottest music videos I've ever seen. Myers is sexy as hell, but she also has an intensity that borders on possession. I've got my penis in one hand, crucifix in the other.)
3. Bob Dylan - Gotta Serve Somebody
(Interesting to see the Dylan haters respond favorably to this song. I guess the gospel background makes Dylan's voice more palatable?)
4. Black Wire - The Face
(Bit of a similar sound to the preceding Harvey Danger song; not as catchy, but heavier and fuzzier, which is what I appreciate more anyway.)
5. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Sick Child
(As usual with this group, I find myself wondering why I don't listen to them more often.)
6. Harvey Danger - Cream and Bastards Rise
(Has more of an edge to it than expected, skirting the line between snarky and bratty.)
7. The Oath - Night Child
(Now I understand why iTunes has been suggesting The Oath lately. Based on this small sample size, I prefer Lucifer, which leans more into the occult sound than what I'm hearing here. It was bugging me why this riff sounded so familiar until I saw ynwtf's Velvet Revolver comparison. Definitely has a softened "Slither" vibe.")
8. Radiohead - Karma Police
(I've never understood the massive hype around Radiohead, but I do like this song.)
9. George Strait - Last in Love
(Finally added Pure Country to my DVD queue, which I've been meaning to do forever. As I've said before when Strait has been nominated, his era of country just doesn't do a lot for me.)
10. Napoleon XIV - They're Coming to Take Me Away
(Annoying, unnerving and tastelessly amusing.)
11. Mick Smiley - Magic
(As one of the YT comments points out, this essentially feels like two songs in one. Unfortunately I don't particularly care for either one, with the first half sounding too much like an inferior version of "In the Air Tonight.")
12. Mission of Burma - That's When I Reach for My Revolver
(Not bad, just unremarkable, and this has been a strong round.)

Well, they could clearly do with getting a singer without such a pronounced stutter. Could easily get their version of Sussudio down to under ten minutes then.
