View Full Version : A Song For October
Well, they could clearly do with getting a singer without such a pronounced stutter. Could easily get their version of Sussudio down to under ten minutes then.
It's quite typical for the bass player to mistake the lead guitarist for the singer, which is the case here. Perhaps it was my lightning fast licks, or maybe the fact that I wear assless chaps when I run the merch booth, but rest assured, no one slings an axe like me! Here is proof:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TwIvUbOhcKE
That said I do have good news! I have truncated Suszzudio down to 11 minutes long, as we have sacked the entire section that featured our bass player sitting in the middle of the stage in a canoe playing a kazoo. I think this change peps up the entire set quite a bit.
Hey, that reminds me of a joke: What is the definition of a bass player?

Excellent idea ...... time to take Sussudio into the Susstudio now then.

This song is a totally hidden gem most people (even people who like Jackson!) have never heard. It's so good, and sounds so timeless, I was sure it was a cover, but no. One of the best tracks he put out after his peak.

1. Rose of the West - Roads
A new discovery for me when I was clicking on Spotify's recommendations for me based on my Ever Growing Playlist. Loved it the second I heard it!
2. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
Love this 80s gem!
3. jiro inagaki & soul media - painted paradise
Oooh, funky little thing! Yep, like this a lot. Reminds me of Chic Corea. I would add this to my Every Growing Spotify playlist, but it's not available! :(
4. Billy Joel - PressureI
Forgot all about this song! Nice to hear it again.
5. Legendary Shack Shakers - Blood on the Blue Grass
I like a bit of bluegrass. Never heard this before. Pretty cool.
6. The Naked and Famous - I Kill Giants
7. Joy Askew - Little Darling
Quite nice, liked the guitar in the background...
8. David Bowie - Underground

Round 7
jiro inagaki & soul media - painted paradise - Just letting this wash over me. :)
The Cranberries - Zombie - I've just finished quite a tough therapy session, so this will have to take second spot.
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy - Stone cold 80's classic. I love it. If it wasn't that I hear this quite regularly it might've nudged Zombie from #2.
Rose of the West - Roads - Sorry, it sort of fell into background for me. Nothing wrong with it, just not for now. Get the feeling I'd have liked it a lot more 20 years ago.
Joy Askew - Little Darling - Quite nice, but not really much else. It's placing will depend more on the rest than its own merits for me.
The Naked and Famous - I Kill Giants - I don't really have much to say, which is kind of why it's here.
Robert Plant - Big Log - I was with this but it just went on too long.
Billy Joel - Pressure - I have no nostalgia for Billy Joel and don't really know his stuff. But it rarely makes me want to seek out more. No different here.
Legendary Shack Shakers - Blood on the Blue Grass - I need something with some life in it. I don't care for it, but it's not last.
Tapio Rautavaara - On aivan sama § (alt link if needed) - Not my thing. I don't really like most forms of folk or traditional music unless there's a hook.
David Bowie - Underground - Never saw the appeal of Labyrinth and Bowie beyond the early 80's isn't usually something I choose to listen or am familar with either. I don't watch the vids and the song isn't doing anything to change my mind about the second part.

I have no nostalgia for Billy Joel and don't really know his stuff. But it rarely makes me want to seek out more. No different here.
How do you manage to be wrong about everything? ;)
I'm kidding, of course. But seriously Billy Joel is one of those born musicians who's got catchiness coming out of his pores. Just seems effortless, for him.
I realize that last sentence is rife for artful misquoting but I'm sticking with it.
I'm listening to these right now. Had to move stuff around my apartment yesterday due to repairs. My computer ended up in the kitchen, and I didn't have long enough ethernet cable until I went shopping today.
01: Tapio Rautavaara - On aivan sama

Hmmmmm...... I'm sensing a possible attempt at vote manipulation coming up with a certain player (who shall remain nameless) voting Bowie's Underground in all eleven positions on their list in the hope of garnering it another 66 points and perhaps moving it up a place or two in the finishing order.
Don't bother - I'm already on to ya, whomever you may be :p

And here I was thinking someone would throw a shoe at me for voting "Zombie" last.
David Bowie - Underground
Is this a surprise to anyone at this point? I mean, besides the two heathens that posted their blasphemies earlier. I reserved this spot in my list for the likely winner, Blackstar, listening to all other tracks before making my final judgment. I think we all know that was a hollow effort designed really only to not be so dismissive of the other noms. I truly mean no disrespect! It's just, well, it's just Bowie. And that should be self evident. I'm listening to this a second time now as I type my commentary for this, my final, pick for first. It's ok. Nothing ever hurts again. There will be another list. And possibly, another Bowie masterpiece to come....
jiro inagaki & soul media - painted paradise
Ya know, I don't need any more than that opening bass line. Oh there are woodwinds as well? Noice. Funk it up, oooooo electric piano, hard right. Chase that jumpy bass. Yeah. Krewuh-aw crunchy wah. HA a sax solo too? Sounds like a soprano. Never been a fan, being an alto man myself, but it's cool. I can let it slide. Drums sound muffled and out of place, but whatever. Back to that funky bass. Man. Good stuff. I'm betting this will sit well in the top half of my list. Ima halfta share this with a bass friend. I can see his chubby bearded cheeks already nodding in beat. Hey! I'm enjoying the lower-case title pattern going on too! Still, it's no Bowie, dropping down to second place. Well, it didn't drop. First spot was already (mostly) sorted. Really, this list is mostly a ranking of second place on. So in THAT context, this track is ...first? But real first is Bowie. Seriously.
Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
Woah, Nice bass line too. I'd love to hear this bass covered by a phat synth. I'm digging it. Funny! I've never heard this song except for the chorus. This is kind of blowing my mind. It's a great sound and mix and fits well enough in today's pop alt. In all honesty, I wondered if this was a current band playing up the retro thing. Well, until the chorus kicked in. Great song and I'm glad to have finally listened to it fully. Might be a fun cover to consider...
Rose of the West - Roads
Another smooth, though simple, bass interval. I could crush on these vocals, especially with the harmonies playing in. Nothing terribly unique in that, but it all is very easy to listen to. Effects may be just a bit too wet, all around. The more I listen to it, the more obvious that bass line becomes. I would enjoy a bit more changes over layering, but it's not bad at all. Kind of a Blue Foundation hooks up with Duran Duran thing? Sorta? Huh. Nice ending.
The Cranberries - Zombie
Pretty good throwback. Only problem, for me, is it's hit or miss on those 90s alt-rock songs. Coming into my own through that decade, there are, unfortunately, a LOT of songs that were overplayed. This was one. Great stuff really, and a lovely voice and accent. Dude, I could listen to her talk for days and then propose to her while she laughs in my face. Just to hear her laugh.
Billy Joel - Pressure
For some reason I'm having flashbacks of Clay's ole Castlevania on NES. Every time I hear the word, "pressure" I get all twitchy waiting for Bowie/Mercury blends to dum bum ba dee on through the vocals, but that just. doesn't. happen! Why tease a Bowie fan with this!? Shame..... SHAME, on your houses!!! I DO bite my thumb at you, sir!
The Naked and Famous - I Kill Giants
Interesting. Just not really my style.
Robert Plant - Big Log
Nice, raspy voice right out of the 90s! It's kind of a silly song, but I remember hearing this when I was a teen and it stuck wi....wait. What? This isn't Mike Watt, Big Train! Argh. ...It wasn't until the early 2000s that I could open up to Led Zeppelin. That's 85% due to Robert Plant's voice. I know, I know.... I accept your rage, and I'm OK with that. It MIGHT be because I was a kid during Plant's pop solo stuff. Maybe. I don't know and I don't really remember. Pretty sure I mostly bloc...ah, crap. Yeah. Tall Cool One. THANKS.... wild cats... ugh.
Tapio Rautavaara - On aivan sama
Nice inclusion! Odd change of pace, but always glad for these put into the mix.
Joy Askew - Little Darling
I'm always weird when it comes to vocals. I imagine this one making that crunchy guitar face while singing, and for some reason that kind of annoys me. Nothing bad, but it sounds overdone to me. =(
Legendary Shack Shakers - Blood on the Blue Grass
Eh, maybe if I was drunk off my arse. Maybe.
@Chypmunk (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=85688) just so we're clear, that's Bowie as my #1. Likely the same for everyone else too. Those were typos, I'm sure, feeling rushed assuming it was already on deadline. Be sure to cut them all some slack. That goes for you as well! I got your back.

Round 7
1. Legendary Shack Shakers - Blood on the Blue Grass
(A bit of bloodgrass for a hillbilly Halloween. I've wanted to nominate this for a long time but knew most would probably hate it. Hopefully people could at least appreciate the true-crime storytelling of the lyrics if not the music itself.)
2. The Cranberries - Zombie
(A huge song, as evidenced by the billion plus views on this video, but the song never seems to age. If anything, I like it more and more as the years pass.)
3. Jiro Inagaki & Soul Media - Painted Paradise
(Extremely impressive, though probably best appreciated by actual musicians, which disqualifies this clown. The drum solo shortly after the halfway mark was probably my favorite section, but the whole song makes me want to grow an afro and strut my way into a blaxploitation flick . . . or into a really well-made porno with tons of 70's bush.)
4. Rose of the West - Roads
(I thought I was going to love this at first, but its spell started to wear off in the second half. Still a very good song with a timeless, spiritual quality, and I'm interested in hearing more from the artist.)
5. Joy Askew - Little Darling
(Soothing. The vocal inflections remind me a bit of Cyndi Lauper, which is a compliment.)
6. David Bowie - Underground
(ynwtf has a pattern of nominating mediocre (at best) songs by all-time great artists.)
7. Robert Plant - Big Log
(Disappointed that this isn't a song dedicated to the chocolate monstrosity that clogged my toilet earlier. Led Zep is a top-five band for me, but I've never listened to any of Plant's solo material outside of his award-winning collaborations with Allison Krauss. Judging by the extremely generic quality here, I haven't missed anything.)
8. Tapio Rautavaara - On aivan sama
(Admire the stern vocal, but pretty far removed from anything I'd listen of my own volition.)
9. Kajagoogoo - Too Shy
(Heard this too many times.)
10. I Kill Giants - The Naked and the Famous
(Whatever genre of music this is classified under, it ain't for me. I especially hate that computerized echo, and the whole thing just sounds way too digitized.)
11. Billy Joel - Pressure
(There's something about Billy Joel that makes me want to chokeslam him through his piano, then deliver a Macho-Man-style elbow drop from the nearest scaffolding.)

Megaherz - Zombieland
Don't forget to double-tap it - just to be sure
Yapoos - Anti Ennui
Liked this, nice quirky singer - gonna look into them a little more
Black Mountain - Defector
My type of jam, another I might delve into a little more
The 3rd and the Mortal - Salva Me
Nicely atmospheric, guess I'll be dropping down a few rabbit holes today
Charley Crockett - The Poplar Tree
Solid country, nice timbre to his voice and another I wouldn't mind listening to more from
Bark At The Moon - Ozzy Osbourne
Not his best but classic Ozzy nonetheless
Scrapper Blackwell - Shady Lane
Winner of the "Best Artist Name" award for this round in my book - solid enough blues track
All Saints - Pure Shores
Easily the best thing they put out imo
Michael Jackson ft. Carlos Santana - Whatever Happens
It's ok but both have done far better imo
Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
I grew up with their earlier (and better imo) output
Neil Diamond - Glory Road
Easy listen but lacks any real spark for me

demmit!
I got worked up in the Shoutbox last night thanks to GB and Wylde, harassing me around the witching hour and forgot to come back. Bowie poster is laminated, so no damage done. I can't believe I missed a round though, but that's OK!! It just gives me pause enough to plot my next musical front.
Oh, and Captain Spaulding
There is no mediocre Bowie. How dare you desecrate the musical trinity of Blackstar, Bowie, and the Goblin King, Jareth?! DROP to you knees, nonbeliever! And beg mercy at the Altar of Stardust! We all see through your guise (a feeble attempt), you rebel Rebel! Bowie is our Hero! He may have passed from this mortal world, but there IS Life on Mars and Major Tom is our guide through the White Noise! Look. I have No Control over this, but it's Little Wonder so many fail to see the light when that light is so blinding!! I will take this round off to ease these tensions, but Bowie will win your heart. I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday. Please, in my next Bowie nom, Don't Let Me Down and Down....

Round 8
1. Black Mountain - Defector
(Super cool vibe. Spark a fattie and stare at the ceiling. Pretty sure I've stumbled across this band before, but whatever tracks I listened to in the past certainly didn't grab me like this one. Might be my favorite first-time listen of the tournament thus far.)
2. Charley Crockett - The Poplar Tree
(I love Crockett's voice and his old-school sound, but for the most part I prefer him when he's singing other people's songs. This is one of the better original tunes I've heard from him with its Marty Robbins-like, 50's-western-plot-encapsulated-in-a-3-minute-song type storytelling, which is an area that country excels at more than any other genre.)
3. Megaherz - Zombieland
(Catchy little headbanger. It seems this tournament has featured fewer metal songs than usual, so I welcome the heaviness.)
4. Scrapper Blackwell - Shady Lane
(Authentic blues are sorely underrepresented in these tournaments. Hard not to wear a stank face as he plucks away.)
5. Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
(Not one of my favorite Ozzy tracks, but a fun October song nonetheless.)
6. Michael Jackson ft. Santana - Whatever Happens
(Don't think I've ever heard this before despite being a fan of both artists. Both seem a bit on cruise control, and I wish the song wasn't so repetitive, but it's still cool hearing MJ do his thing over Santana's chords.)
7. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
(Listening to this on the heels of "Zombieland" did it no favors. That song was Tallahassee. This song is Columbus.)
8. The 3rd and the Mortal - Salva Me
(Ambient and experimental, and I like small pockets within the song, but overall not really feeling it -- especially the vocals.)
9. Yapoos - Anti Ennui
(Too much for my brain this early in the morning.)
10. All Saints - Pure Shores
(Sounds too much like beaches and sunshine and happiness and I'm more of a shadowy forest of moroseness.)
11. Neil Diamond - Glory Road
(Zzzzzz . . .)
Sitting out the weekend, but I'll be back for round 10.

Great round, everyone! For many of them it was hard to assign numbers.
1. Black Mountain - Defector
I love Black Mountain. Been listening to them a lot of late. This particular album is incredible. I highly recommend it to anyone who liked this song. (listen to the song "Boogie Lover" for extra comfirmation)
2. Killing Joke - Love Like Blood
**** yes Killing Joke. Very cool song.
3. Megaherz - Zombieland
Oooh I'm getting light Rammstein vibes from this.
4. Yapoos - Anti Ennui
Weird little thing, but I liked it. I could easily crush on the vocalist. HAWT.
5. Bark At The Moon - Ozzy Osbourne
Classic Ozzy. Although I must admit I prefer Ozzy with Sabbath, and Sabbath with Ozzy (I normally only like Sabbath with Ozzy, exceptions being Born Again and Mob Rules)
6. Michael Jackson ft. Carlos Santana - Whatever Happens
Never heard this before. Quite pretty.
7. Neil Diamond - Glory Road
Neil Diamond has a great voice.
8. Scrapper Blackwell - Shady Lane
Very nice rootsy blues.
9. Charley Crockett - The Poplar Tree
Pleasant enough, for country, a genre I struggle a lot with. Not sure it's memorable enough for me though.
10. The 3rd and the Mortal - Salva Me
Wasn't quite sure what to make of this.
11. All Saints - Pure Shores
Not really a fan of this sort of pop in general.

Round 9? Nom
From the gruesome, dark, shadowy pit that is my 1980's childhood repression box, my next nomination comes to light. From the moment I decided my theme, I knew the movie and I assumed the song; but for this flick's startling violation of my then pure as the driven snow innocence, I was hesitant to give this very much attention. I am glad that I did, though! My current selection seems slightly out of place, but does a wonderful job or countering the lurking memories of pain and suffering that I (and so many of my friends at the time) have suffered. "What movie could do such a thing?" one might ask. One would be reasonable to guess, The Evil Dead. or perhaps one of the earlier Nightmare on Elm Street releases. Good guesses, but one would be wrong. No! This movie was far more damaging to the collective childhood of a nation and I fear speaking its name will only conjure its sleeping demons...
Good thing I'm only typing this!
I present to you a track from 1986's major motion picture release of T.V.'s Transformers: The Movie. My mother took me and a friend to this theatrical release. We were salivating to see our heroes on the big screen in a full length motion picture run. That's my friend and I, I mean. My mom couldn't have cared less I'm sure. Little did we know that within the first 3 minutes of our viewing, we would witness an entire planet of sentient life devoured, alive, by the massive and godly Unicron. We literally watched the inhabitants digested. But wait!!! After the brief opening credits, we were then treated to a Decepticon attack on an Autobot moonbase that resulted in the death of four of our favorite Autobots. But wait WAIT wait!!!1! Optimus. Prime. was. killed!!!!!! Oh. [spoiler?] This doesn't even include all of the debated kills off screen. Let me rephrase that: children witnessed no less than FIVE of their heroes of the previous two YEARS brutally MURDERED!!!! A friggin CARTOON! lol.
I admit that "The Touch," by Stan Bush, was the obvious choice. However, the more I listened to it, the angrier I got. "You're a winner!" plays confidently as Prime leaps into action, taking on Megatron one-on-one. Boy was that a lie! So, no. 86 "The Touch" and let's move on to something a little less ...debilatingly morbid. After much debate (that's internal debate with the other voices in my head), I decided, instead, to submit the more reasonable and approachable song that more might enjoy. This track backed the entrance of the Junkions, a newly discovered race of transformers that live on a planet-sized ball of... well ....junk.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Dare to be Stupid (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SMhwddNQSWQ)

1. Dmitri Shostakovich - Cello Sonata in D minor, II. Allegro
- I am too dumb to talk about classical music. I like the way it sounds.
2. Spoon - Lines in the Suit
- "How come I feel so washed up at such a such a tender age now" damn dude. It's interesting to me that lyrics similar to this can come off so grating and whiny in the hands of many other artists and bands, but Spoon, a band that I really haven't listened to, make it feel real and relatable.
3. Alabama 3 - Woke Up This Morning
- Impossible to separate this from The Sopranos, and since I love The Sopranos, this song benefits.
4. boris - 1970
- I should probably listen to Boris
5. The Builders And The Butchers - Raise Up
- Doing dark, old-timey inspired music will appeal to me more often than not
6. Flowing Tears - Kismet
- This is fine
7. "Weird Al" Yankovic - Dare to be Stupid
- I'm not that big of an Al fan.
8. Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger
- Have I never listened to a Queensryche song before? Why was I thinking they would be something completely different?
9. Michael Sembello - Rock Until You Drop
- A little too much for me.
10. Survivor - The Search Is Over
- Nope. Not today, Satan.

Alabama 3 - Woke up This Morning § (alt link if needed) - As JJ said, it's impossibe to not think Soprano's but that's perfectly fine with me.
Dmitri Shostakovich - Cello Sonata in D minor, II. Allegro - I think a nice short piece of classical music may do well with me this round. Just a feeling I have.
Michael Sembello - Rock Until You Drop - No love for The Monster Squad?
boris - 1970 - This does play well for me though. It's fairly generic, but that's OK if you like the sound.
Survivor - The Search Is Over - I don't know this but it's definitely 80's. Unless they're great though, I'm not the biggest fan of power ballads and this doesn't really cut it in the power part of that description.
Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger - Queensryche are another band which I can't really connect with.
Flowing Tears - Kismet - This felt a lot longer than it was. Didn't hate it, just thought it'd been on for 5 or 6 minutes and when I looked it's only just over 4.
"Weird Al" Yankovic - Dare to be Stupid -I really don't like comedy songs. I do like the premise of this though. :D
The Builders And The Butchers - Raise Up - Again, traditional so rarely works for me. I didn't hate it though so it'll depend on the rest of the round.
Spoon - Lines in the Suit - I don't know what it was, but I really didn't care much for this at all.

4. The Builders And The Butchers - Raise Up

6. Queensryche - Eyes of a Stranger
7. Dmitri Shostakovich - Cello Sonata in D minor, II. Allegro
I like Shostakovich but classical music doesn't really fit song contests for me. I think because they're too formal.

NBD. But yeah since you're five hours ahead that means the hours leading right up until the deadline I'm asleep, so when it falls on a weekend like that I'll almost always miss it.
That's why the window for voting/nominating is 48 hours so everybody gets two full days in which to do so.
If I'm gonna be banned for this, for the sake of those playing can you at least please wait until the end of the month so we can finish the tournament ;)
Wasn't complaining, just explaining. These go faster than I'd realized but that's on me. No big deal.

That is pretty much my MO in these tournaments; I miss the weekend rounds a lot!
Yeah, one of my all-time favorite bands. If you liked this (the first song of theirs I ever heard!), you should 100% check out most of their other stuff. If the size of the options is too much I can throw out some of the best ones, but they're just great, and very consistent.

Do tough guys still say that? Beat up?
Eh, I think common parlance is "rip your head off and sh*t in your neck" but "beat you up" is near enough and just marks you as an old-school hardman .... which obviously means you're well practised :)
I almost went with "I will straight up kill you." But even that seemed harsh. Or so I thought.

9. Dead Territory - 4'33"
I appreciate the 4'33" video as a bit. I don't think that Garth Brooks track is actually Garth Brooks, cause he's notorious for not allowing any of stuff out there anywhere. I prefer Hall of the Mountain King Savatage to this ballad. That Hooverphonic track is interesting at least, but I don't think I'm feeling it too much overall. "Baby Come Back" is good for they say "Baby come back". "Werewolves of London" is fine. "Do Bad Things" is the True Blood theme, which reminds me I should go back and maybe finish that show. I've heard it gets pretty bad, but this track is still good. I have a love/hate relationship with The Beatles.

I've heard that song thousands of times, and that is definitely Garth Brooks singing. There are still some links for his music out there. You just have look for them a bit harder than songs for other artists.

Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London - I was so glad this was eligable as I was sure someone had nominated this before and it'd done well. I almost didn't bother checking. Even if it wasn't Halloween I think this would be topping my list.
The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Great song but a brilliant chorus which makes the song.
Player - Baby Come Back - This song is so evocative of its era. Which is a great thing for me.
Hooverphonic - Frosted Flake Wood - Liked this, had a Halloweeny feel. A bit like something from a kids horror/Halloween special.
Savatage - Believe - Completely unaware of this before now. Good ballad. I think if I'd heard this at the 'right' time in my life it'd be a firm favourite.
The Radiacs - Do Bad Things - A song which never quite takes off for me. I like it, I just wish it had a bit more to give.
Brandy Clark - Stripes - Meh, it's catchy enough but not my thing.
Garth Brooks - Learning to Live Again - We all know how I feel about this.
Dead Territory - 4' 33'' (Death Metal Cover) - Sorry, I'm not wasting my time. Neither on this, the original or any other 'version'.

1. The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
(Possibly my favorite Beatles song.)
2. Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London
(Never realized how much this sounds like "Sweet Home Alabama." No wonder Kid Rock mashed them together.)
3. Brandy Clark - Stripes
(Can't say for certain if I've ever listened to Brandy Clark before, although I'm familiar with the name. Lyrics are the highlight here. Orange is the New Woman in Black.)
4. The Radiacs - Do Bad Things
(My least favorite of my own noms this tournament, as I generally agree with hk's comments. Wish the sound was a bit more sinister or that the band went ballistic in the closing stretch, but I still enjoy the song nonetheless.)
5. Hooverphonic - Frosted Flake Wood
(Makes me feel like I'm in a Terry Gilliam film or something similarly warped.)
6. Player - Baby Come Back
(I've heard this song used for comedic purposes so often that it's lost whatever smoothness it once had. At least now I know the name of the artist.)

Great round, guys! Doing this all from my phone so no fancy colours or smaller fonts...
1. Player - Baby Come Back
Absolutely love this song. It's one of my all-time favourites from the 70s. A few years ago, I was watching this Danish tv programme where they spent a day with a certain celebrity, and the episode I happened upon featured Ronn Moss, who was mostly known for his role as Ridge Forrester in the daytime soap The Bold and the Beautiful. I was shocked when it was revealed he was also known for being in a one hit wonder 70s band called Player... I had no idea...
2. The Radiacs - Do Bad Things
Very good cover. I quite like psycho/rockabilly. Of course I thought about True Blood.
3. Hooverphonic - Frosted Flake Wood
Yaaas Hooverphonic!
4. The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Great Beatles song.
5. Warren Zevon - Werewolves Of London
A "that song!" moment for me. You know, when you know a song but didn't know its name ir who did it...
6. Brandy Clark - Stripes
I really struggle with country in general, but liked this one, good voice and attitude.
7. Dead Territory - 4' 33'' (Death Metal Cover)

The Specials - Ghost Town - It's classics time again. Very much of its time and yet it seems timeless and (sadly) as relevant as ever. One of my favourite songs of all time. It's defintely my #1 this round.
The Zombies - Time of the Season - Love this song and it's one of two Zombie songs I was thinking of nominating myself but couldn't fit them in. Great song.
Eddie Murphy - Party all the Time - Oh, here we go. It's the 80's baby and a classic of sorts. A great example of the 3am coke conversation, ego and the money to make it so. Can you imagine the 80's without the influence of coke? No, you can't because it couldn't have happened.
Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman - Oh, it's classic time. Though, like My Guitar Gently Weeps, it's the chorus which really elevates it.
Amorphis - Silver Bride - Nice sound, but that's about it.
Chris Knight - Down The River - It feels like it should be over the credits of a true crime documentary. Goes on way too long for me but it fits the mood of the song.
Liz Callaway - Once Upon A December - Quite nice, but not something I'd choose to listen to.
Big Data - Dangerous - I quite liked it, but it soon became background music.
Billy Strings - Watch It Fall - I actually don't mind the music. It's the singing which puts me off.
China Dolls - The Dog Song - Silly and quirky. Obviously the kind of thing which will often play well with me. Unfortunately small yappy type dogs are as annoying as ****.
Good round for me.

5 Eddie Murphy - Party all the Time - Pretty fun track from Eddie.
6 Liz Callaway - Once Upon A December - I don't think I have seen this flick, Will have to check it out soon.

Round 11
1. Billy Strings - Watch It Fall
(Bluegrass will never be mainstream, but I think this ridiculously talented twentysomething, a savant at picking strings and a solid songwriter to boot, could be the catalyst for younger generations to reassess their opinions of this so-called old-fogey music. Bluegrass legend and pioneer Earl Scruggs is the most famous person to ever hail from my neck of the woods, so I'm predisposed to this sound anyway.)
2. The Zombies - Time of the Season

3. Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
(Right back at ya, jiraffejustin.)
4. The Specials - Ghost Town
(Eerie and catchy. Could also double as a soundtrack for our current pandemic.)
5. Chris Knight - Down the River
(Love the storytelling. Don't love the monotony.)
6. Big Data - Dangerous
(Hard to pay attention to the song when I'm watching one of the greatest music videos ever made.)
7. Amorphis - Silver Bride
(Grew on me as it went along. Kinda feel like putting hammer to steel like a badass blacksmith. Instead I'll probably just visit the Skyforge in Whiterun like a not so badass geek.)
8. China Doll - The Dog Song

9. Eddie Murphy - Party All the Time

6. Chris Knight - Down The River
Never heard of this guy. I guess this is also country, but for some reason I can handle it.

Johannes Brahms - Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, III. Allegro (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-YmXptuK5mw&ab_channel=Queixoso)
1 Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) - One of my favorite CB tunes. My band used to play a cover of this in the 90s...
2 Plastic Machine - Elle S'Imagine (Night version) - I almost put this at #1, but it didn't quite knock CB off the throne. Really great, though.
3 Badfinger - Day After Day - My nom gets kicked down to #3 this round. Oh well.
4 Sabbat - Paint the World Black - Grew on me as I listened. Some minor quibbles with the production, but overall, really liked this.
5 Nogizaka46 - Yoake Made Tsuyogaranakute mo Ii - I listen off and on at work to the round, and this ended up stuck in my head for a bit. I liked the sentiment of the lyrics and the video was fun.
6 Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - Great tune, but I am plum sick of it at this point. Way overplayed.
7 Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen - Same here. I have heard this too many times, and Nick's voice sets my teeth on edge sometimes.
8 The Zombies - She's Not There - I liked the other Zombies tune more.
9 Bloc Party - Price of Gas - Vocal killed this one for me
10 Mobb Deep - Animal Instinct - Couldn't get into this one.
11 Steve Wariner - Life's Highway - We know how this goes. ;)

Yeah, creates a nice mix of songs at times though and over the years there's quite a few 'new to me' artists I've delved deeper into after one of their tracks has been nominated.

If the title of this thread was "An unappreciated/obscure song for October" my choices would be different but it ain't. I wouldn't call many of my picks classics but most of them will be from established acts because that's what I listen to. I'm not that immersed in music that I know tons of random bands who have less than 10k views on YouTube. I nominate music that I like. Simple as that.
Hmm, sounds like you might have taken that as a slight, when it certainly wasn't intended as one. I'm just noting that people clearly approach the whole thing differently. Which, as Chyp noted, is perfectly fine and works out well in the aggregate.
FWIW I don't think somebody has to be immersed in anything obscure to have a lot of songs to offer others that they might not have heard, regardless.

Clearly, I fall on the latter side of that, and would go as far as to say that I sometimes border on a troll posting extreme metal to make people sit through something they probably can't stand, but that for some reason, I find dark and beautiful in an almost poetic way. I also like a seriously wide variety of genres, so I may vacillate from extreme metal to pop to classic rock to ditching my own nom to vote a classical piece at #1.
Warning: My taste in music might be terrible.

Some great energy and I like the raw production a lot. I just have this weird thing with vocals that slide slightly out of key like that. This coming from a guy that listens to death/black metal, so my opinion of good vocals is clearly suspect! ;)

No offense taken, I was merely explaining that in picking a song I wasn't "playing to win" I was just choosing a song that I like. If others like it too; great. If not, no worries.
As for your second point, I disagree. Immersion may have been too strong a word but obtaining obscure/specialist knowledge of any subject in life necessitates a certain level of interest in that field, unless the subject is by its nature obscure or unpopular.

The Zombies - She's Not There - It might get penalised for following so close to Time Of The Season, but it's such a great song I decided to bump the one I was going to nominate and go with it.
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - Riff-tastic.
Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen - I just realised I don't really know any of Nicks solo catelogue with a couple of exceptions. This wasn't one of them, but I quite like it.
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (The Vampire Song) - Has someone nominated this before? Not great, but this is a pretty weak round for me so far.
Mobb Deep - Animal Instinct - I like the beat and the flow.
Bloc Party - Price of Gas - Sounded a bit like a pop verison of something PiL would've done if they'd started in the 90's.
Nogizaka46 - Yoake Made Tsuyogaranakute mo Ii - Bright and bouncy but not much else.
Plastic Machine - Elle S'Imagine (Night version) - OK, but background music.
Badfinger - Day After Day - Meh.
Steve Wariner - Life's Highway - Actually this was quite a nice way to finish the round.
Sabbat - Paint the World Black - Not my thing, but God doesn't it go on?

As for your second point, I disagree. Immersion may have been too strong a word but obtaining obscure/specialist knowledge of any subject in life necessitates a certain level of interest in that field, unless the subject is by its nature obscure or unpopular.
What I'm getting at here is that there's so much music in the world, and it's so varied, that I think a lot of songs you think of as fairly well-known are, to another demographic, probably brand new. Think of that Stevie Nicks song that skyrocketed to the top of iTunes because it was in the background of a viral TikTok.
In other words, it doesn't have to be specialist or obscure too everyone, just to some individuals. And individuals are all over the place. So you probably contain what is, to them, identical to the obscure/specialist knowledge.
I often make this mistake, of assuming some song or book or idea that feels very well-worn to me (and maybe my circle of friends or family) is totally unknown to someone else.

If you're saying that obscurity and popularity are subjective and differ from person to person then I agree...to an extent. There are certain individuals/groups that are so significant, famous and influential that awareness of them is universal. At the other end of the spectrum are artists that are almost unknown to the general population. And then of course you have a spectrum of popularity connecting the two extremes. Obviously popularity does not not equate to quality but it still exists. For example if someone has never heard of Michael Jackson or Madonna you have to question their sanity.

Seriously guys, great round!!! Probably my fav of the tournament so far. I pretty much loved everything I heard tonight and let me tell you I am SMASHED LMAO!!!
Plastic Machine - Elle S'Imagine (Night version)
Wow never heard this before but I love it! Love the psychdelic 80s synth...
Badfinger - Day After Day
Oooh good choice! Haven't heard this in an age!!
Mobb Deep - Animal Instinct
OOH I LIKE!!!!
Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)
Never heard this before and I like it!!!!!
Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen
YAAASS love this song.
Bloc Party - Price of Gas
Oh wow, this is one of those bands I've always seen mentioned about but never actually heard anything. If their other stuff sounds like this, I like it!
The Zombies - She's Not There
Great song, my second fav from The Zombies.
Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
I like this song but my dad really killed it for me by playing it every day. I was always more partial to The Waterline. But this was definitely in their very best days, before the woeful Walk of Life song became the go-to.
Sabbat - Paint the World Black
Good song!
Steve Wariner - Life's Highway
Yet I'm pretty blotto because this is country and I'm jammin.
Nogizaka46 - Yoake Made Tsuyogaranakute mo Ii
I thought I was on a youtube advert for a while, but then again, I am in bits!!!!

Round 12
1. Concrete Blonde - Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)
(I know "Joey" was a big hit back in the day, but overall I think Concrete Blonde is criminally underrated/underappreciated nowadays. They were ahead of their time. If I want a goth fix, I'd faster reach for this album than anything by The Cure. Happy Halloween, Anne-Rice style.)
2. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
(Their Brothers in Arms album was played heavily in my household during my earliest years, but I've never warmed up to Dire Straits personally. However, my appreciation of this Dylan-esque classic has certainly grown over the years.)
3. Steve Wariner - Life's Highway
(I thought this was going to be the original version of the Rascal Flatts song that was ubiquitous in the 2000's. Pleased to discover that this is a completely different song that's new to me. A really solid, toe-tapping tune.)
4. Mobb Deep - Animal Instinct
(Going to make a point to listen to this entire album soon, as it's got that raw, dangerous, life-on-the-streets legitimacy that excites me most when it comes to rap.)
5. The Zombies - She's Not There
(I was curious to hear something else from The Zombies and I'm surprised to discover that I already know this song -- just never realized it was them. Not as great or as timeless as "Time of the Season," but still a very good song. Sounds like something from The Animals but with softer vocals.)
6. Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen
(A bit shocked to read that honeykid isn't familiar with this song, as I feel like every classic rock station in the U.S. plays this once an hour, or so it seems. I guess it wasn't as big of a hit in the UK.)
7. Plastic Machine - Elle S'Imagine (Night version)
(As with most electronic music, it's really cool for a couple minutes, then I'm ready to move onto something else.)
8. Badfinger - Day After Day
(Reminds me of a Beatles cover band.)
9. Bloc Party - Price of Gas
(Sounds like music made for people much cooler than myself.)
10. Nogizaka46 - Yoake Made Tsuyogaranakute mo Ii
(Too upbeat for me, but I'll never object to watching hot Asian schoolgirls.)
11. Sabbat - Paint the World Black
(Pretty boring track. Essentially sounds like a 5.5 minute crescendo to a payoff that never arrives. These drawn-out, moaning vocals make the song feel like an eternity.)

Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit - The most horrific of the halloween themed stuff I've posted. Wonderfully evocative of the most horrible imagery. Once I'd decided I was going to try and shy away from some of the most obvious stuff, this was a definite.
Amyl and the Sniffers - Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled) - A throwback to a time I enjoy.
Weedeater - It Is What It Is - Now that's a grimey sounding guitar and I like it. if I liked the singing it'd be a real winner.
The Sound - I Can't Escape Myself - Sounds like someone in the 90's trying to sound like Joy Division. Which I know it definitely isn't as they are contemporaries of Joy Division, but I did have to check the video to make sure.
Meg Myers - Lemon Eyes - I quite like it but there's something which keeps me from giving it more praise than that after one listen.
Johannes Brahms - Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, III. Allegro - Just not in the right mood for something like this atm.
The Prince of Egypt - Deliver Us - It sounds like something from a musical. That's rarely a good thing for me.
Clint Black - Untanglin' My Mind - My mind's in an odd place today and, while I didn't like it, this didn't annoy me as much as I'd have expected.
Costello ft. 4Real - Chill D **** Out - Just didn't like it very much.
Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace - Sorry, never understood this stuff.
Eddie Vedder - Society - Too close to folk/country for me liking.

R14 nomination:
Irwin Goodman - Ei tippa tapa (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=leSS06OhXDI)
Let's end this tournament with an old Finnish classic. And yeah, it's about drinking and the artist pretty much drank himself to death (though I guess it was a bit more complicated than that).

1. Costello ft. 4Real - Chill D **** Out
I love Costello of Street Literature. He's probably my favourite hip hop artist at the moment, along with dälek and Cannibal Ox. I love his accent, and his backing music is always my kind of chill. I also love that he's not about pimps and hos.
2. Weedeater - It Is What It Is
Never heard this before but instantly liked it. This is definitely my kind of thing.
3. Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
I was thinkiong about this song earlier in the tournament. I was going to nominate Tricky's remix of it but never got around to it. Great song.
4. The Sound - I Can't Escape Myself
Yeah I like this.
5. Amyl and the Sniffers - Some Mutts (Can't Be Muzzled)
Like more action rock Blondie. I dig it.
6. Eddie Vedder - Society
I quite like this...Sometimes his tone grates me but not this time.
7. Meg Myers - Lemon Eyes
Decent enough pop song.
8. Clint Black - Untanglin' My Mind
9. Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace
10. Johannes Brahms - Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, III. Allegro
11. The Prince of Egypt - Deliver Us

Yoda - sadly that video is not available here - is this one (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lEXD3IOykYw) acceptable as an alternative link for those of us that might need it?
