Hi Everyone - MovieGal here,

The rules are simple

- The film must have been made from 1980 to 1989.
- It must contain a lead character who is a teen.
- The film can be set in any era such as "Back to The Future" or "Outsiders"
- It can be of any genre - 80's Teen Horror is most welcome to join with Teen Romance, Teen Comedy and Teen Action.
- Everyone who nominates a film, will watch and rate the other nominee's film.

I want to make this a fun Hall of Fame so please any open discussions about music from the films, quizzes and even our own fun stories of being a teen is welcome.

I was a teen during this time and I graduated high school in 1985 so perhaps I will even share my senior picture from then. This is open to everyone, remember the more the merrier!

Enjoy and Have Fun!!!!

I'll have to give this one some serious thought. I have a feeling that I'd hate majority of nominations but will need to investigate a bit further than my prejudices. Right off the bat I can't think more than a handful I've liked so no promises about joining but it's possible.

Actually, that sounds kind of fun. I graduated in '82 so there's a good chance I've seen a large chunk of films from then that I watched during that time and it may be a lot of fun to do a revisit.

In fact, right off the top of my head, I may already have a nom ready to go.

 Great job MovieGal. I like the whole 80s teen theme, so many awesomely cool teen movies from the 80s:p, this will be fun!

I like that there's 3 weeks to decide on a movie nomination. That gives me lots of time try and pick a good one:)

Hughes will pretty much be a given for high school 80's flicks. lol Which is fine there are some great ones by him.
And having someone nominate Heathers would be great. Been forever since I saw that one and I have a feeling you'd kick outta of it. And if not, well, "F@ck me gently with a chainsaw."

I'm interested in joining this but I am a little confused to how this works and I don't want to commit to something that I would be too busy to finish. How often do we need to watch a film/how many films do we need to watch? Sorry if this is a dumb comment haha!

Same. Never taken part in a HoF, so not really sure what my obligation is. Is this just one nomination per user? a list of top 100 or whatever to submit that gets measured against other user lists?

Walk me through this one as though I am a child.

You pick one film then you watch from a list of all the nominated films (typically between 9-15) and you have 2-3 months to watch all the films and write a review. Once you've finished watching all the films you submit a list in order from what you liked and the host adds them together and declares a winner.

It's been a while since I joined a HoF because there have been a lot of movies nominated that just aren't my type of movies, but I'm seriously considering this HoF. I've seen a lot of the '80's teen movies, and I love, (or at least like), many of them. My only concern is that there may be too many horror teen movies nominated.

I'll be very surprised if The Breakfast Club doesn't win this HoF, but I'd like to see what other movies people nominate to try to beat it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

- excluded because it just missed the cutoff

The Wizard(1989)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AacoxHFYvZw

El Norte(1983)

-I don't know if I wanted to watch something this powerful again

Nightmare on Elm Street III (1987)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waiA1uSgK3w

-I've nominated way to many horror films so I'm moving onto a new genre

I'll say this for the film I've picked it sort of is a combination of all four of these films. And this should be a film in contention to win.

It doesn't just "technically" fit but rather it touches on the same central metaphor of most teen films, growing up moving past your childhood issues and discovering who you are going to be.

I DEMAND Stand By Me to be removed from this tournament as all the lead characters are 12 year olds and thus not teenagers and do not belong in the teen movie hall of fame. I do not see this as a Teen movie and I am unwilling to LISTEN any other opinions. This tournament is not meant for intended audiences or the themes of the story, heck the movie doesn't even take place in the 1980's.

Y'know kids and teens of the 80's who were inspired by the film and then put aspects of the anime into their bodies of work.

Gotcha, but I don't think people signed up for this HoF to watch Akira.

[/sarcasm...but also HOW DARE YOU] :p

You have a point as I didn't remember the exact age of the boys, although the bullies are teens. I do think it at least fits the spirit of the theme a little closer.

Akira
Seen it and liked it ok. I'll watch it again but I don't think it's the kind of movie anyone envisioned would be in this HOF.

Yeah, it's not what you'd expect in a "Teen Movie" theme, but really the only actual stipulations were:

- The film must have been made from 1980 to 1989.
- It must contain a lead character who is a teen.

Not much of a theme if you ask me, but meh, it's not my HoF, and I wouldn't be able to get all the way through it even if it was. Personally I would have made it "Coming of Age Stories" or something like that. Stories that revolved around the nature of adolescence and being a teenager, not merely movies with a teenage lead.

What about movies with college age kids playing high-school teens? Or movies like The Maze Runner and The Hunger Games where the actors are older but the characters are supposed to be teenagers?

I believe those are current films, They do not qualify as they were not made during the 1980s. Patrick Swayze was 32 years old when they made "Red Dawn" in 1984, He played a teenager.

I believe the older boys in "Stand by Me" were around 13 or 14 years old.. so yeah it qualifies even.

I think Stand by Me def qualifies. Some technicalties with age on a few of the cast but theyre all basically teenagers.

I guess essentially its a pre teen focused film but its so decent i cant see why itd be ejected. Shlt, them kids were at the perfect age to watch Akira, had it come out back then.

IMDB classifies it as an 80's Teen Movie

Its eligible... its rated #5

and Kieffer Sutherland's character "Ace Merrill" does have a decent size part in the movie.. as he's the bully to these boys.

People finding things wrong with the some of the nominations.. even though they fall under the guidelines.

Perhaps Akira was popular with the teen's in Japan in the 80s... so its a Japanese 80s Teen film..

Most are comedies or happy go lucky time of nominations and not depressing but I seen one I wanted to nominate that was very depressive but it was a rare gem.. that I have never seen..

David is a high school student who seems to have the world on a string. One night while partying with his friends on a big bluff on the outskirts of town, David falls to his death. Everyone assumes it is an accident until a few days later, when David’s friend, Chris receives David’s suicide note in the mail. The suicide devastates David’s friends, family, school, and community. The rest of the film chronicles their grief and their inability to understand why David killed himself.

I might just watch it because its sounds like a great film even though its depressing.

Hope you guys all love a musical, cause my nom Grease 2 is a musical and a damn fun one! It's got a great mix of sexual innuendo songs being sung by horny teens and 80s pop rock numbers too!...And one helluva a motorcycle stunt that's done for real!

While riding on the back of a motorcycle, the girl swings her body around to set on his lap of the guy driving, and they make out...while doing a high speed wheelie!...and with no helmets:eek:...BTW that's not a stunt woman, it's Michelle Pfieffer doing the stunt. I think you guys might be surprised by this one...oh and no comparing it to Grease:rolleyes: That's a totally different movie and this one has very little in common with Grease which was first a Broadway play. Grease 2 is strictly for fun.

QUITE surprised that there is no Hughes films or that Heathers didn't make it, would have been fun for a revisit for that.
Still, quite a nice eclectic crowd to this. Looking forward to it. THANKS MovieGal and Citizen Rules for doing this!

Akira (1988) - Siddon Been forever since I saw this, so it should be fun for a revisit

Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - Velvet Never got around to seeing it, but heard it was pretty decent, so I will find out.

Once Bitten (1985) - MovieGal another I haven't seen since it came out and curious to see how it fares since then.

Better Off Dead (1985) - Ed When I think back to this time and teen flicks this one always pops into my head, in fact it was THE first one to pop in when this came up and quickly sent it in as a nom.

Say Anything (1989) - Rhys Another Cusack film and I am a fan, so I should be enjoying this one since I can't remember anything from it.

Teen Wolf (1985) - TUS remembering being so-so about this one when it came out but it doesn't mean it won't be fun to watch now.

Lucas (1986) - Smudge Never saw this, or I don't think I did, but will get to, now

Stand By Me (1986) - Sedai Been a long time since I saw this, so, another fun revisit

Heaven Help Us (1985) - Cricket Had utterly forgotten about this one, so YAY that it was nominated

Crossroads (1986) - ynwtf a classical guitar student goes on the road to learn the Blues. VERY cool

Three O'Clock High (1987) - Joel vaguely remember the set up to this and curious for the revisit

My Bodyguard (1980) - GBG Good choice! Been ages since I saw this.

Grease 2 (1982) - Citizen Rules No comparing with the original Grease, huh? We'll see about that ;) Still, I have been tempted with Pfieffer being it in and all, now it'll happen.

The very first time I saw her was in Hollywood Knights (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080881/?KeepThis=true&TB_iframe=true) from 1980. Set in the 60's with muscle cars and all kinds of pranks where she played a roller skating car hop (waitress at a drive-in diner). Talk about HOT. And with the movies that followed she showed what an incredible actress she is and I've been a fan ever since.

I was just lamenting over my old muscle car...ah, those were the days.

The closest I got to a muscle car was an '82 Malibu SS back in the late 90s when I lived on the east side of Detroit. It lasted about 2 weeks before it was stolen.
When I was a teen I drove around in a 76 Pontiac Station Wagon. The size of an air craft carrier. A blue behemoth that fit a twin mattress in the back making it ideal for nights at the drive in. It would fit upwards of 10 of us.
I would have gotten something nicer but my older brother was given a Javelin and the d@mn fool totaled it. So, me and my younger brother got the old family car when my dad got a newer one.

Who knows, maybe in my old age I'll get one. Like a Charger or a Challenger. Would love one of them, just for the loudness of them.

Nominations:

Akira (1988) - I think I watched this once for one of the tournaments here, but I don't remember much about it, except I don't think it held my interest. Hopefully I'll have a better experience with it this time.

Can't Buy Me Love (1987) - I know that I've seen this, but I always get it confused with the movie Loverboy, (the movie about the pizza delivery boy). I'm looking forward to rewatching it.

Once Bitten (1985) - I haven't seen this, but it sounds like a fun movie that's not too much on the horror side.

Better Off Dead (1985) - I've seen this several times, and I always enjoy rewatching it.

Say Anything (1989) - I think I saw this a long time ago, but the only thing I remember about it is that it stars John Cusack. I like him, so I'm looking forward to rewatching it. (The DVD has been sitting on my shelf for a couple of years, so it's about time that I watched it.)

Teen Wolf (1985) - I saw this a long time ago, and I remember it being a fun movie. Michael J. Fox is always fun to watch in his teen movies, so this is another movie that I'm looking forward to rewatching.

Lucas (1986) - This is another movie that I always confuse with a different teen movie. I thought it was the movie Rudy, but that's a different teen movie. I'm not sure if I've seen this movie or not, but I'm looking forward to finding out.

Stand By Me (1986) - This is a great movie that I've seen many times. It's always a good movie to rewatch.

Heaven Help Us (1985) - If this is the movie I think it is, then I think I saw it a long time ago. (If I'm right, it stars Matt Dillon's brother, Kevin.) I don't remember much about it, so I'm looking forward to watching it.

Crossroads (1986) - I love this movie. I hope it does well in this HoF because it deserves the recognition.

Three O'Clock High (1987) - I haven't seen this movie, but it's already on my watchlist, so I'm looking forward to finally watching it. (I think Gideon recommended it a while back.)

My Bodyguard (1980) - My nomination, so I hope everyone likes it as much as I do. :)

Grease 2 (1982) - I've seen this movie a few times. It's not a favorite of mine, but I can see how other people might enjoy it. It has some catchy tunes.

They're probably complaining because the kids in Stand by Me were barely old enough to qualify as teenagers, and their characters weren't portrayed as teenagers. But I haven't heard the complaints since I haven't been following the conversation in the thread that much, so I can only speculate. I disagree about it "definitely" being considered a teen movie, but that's your opinion as you said, and you're entitled to it.

Say Anything

Say Anything possesses a certain aura of sensibility that one may not expect from a romantic comedy from the 80’s. It relies on pure feelings and the joy of feeling fulfilled by the support of another person and hopelessness when it all falls apart. Cusack plays Lloyd Dobler and Ion Skye plays Diane. Lloyd is a man who doesn't quite know what he wants to do but is quite certain about what he doesn't want to do, best shown when he expresses this sentiment, “I don't want to buy anything, sell anything, or process anything as a career.'' . Diane is the complete contrast as the Valedictorian who has put her academics and career goals above most other things in her life. After working up his courage he nervously asks her out and after some persuasion she says yes. Obviously this is unknown territory for both parties and the unique circumstances lead to the date being treated as infinitely puzzling by the people around them. Diane when asked why she came with Llyod responds “He made me laugh”

The date progresses and Diane seems to be enjoying herself, obviously happy at the way Llyod sweetly and casually checks in on her to make sure she is enjoying herself. This whole sequence really demonstrates how Llyod makes Diane feel safe and how he is a gentleman in many ways. So after the date goes well they decide to go on another which progresses into many more. The rest of the film greatly conveys themes of guilt, love, and honesty. I would say more but I don't want to give anything away.

I really wish I was a better writer so I could convey what this film expresses and just how well it executes on its themes.

Akira

Really just felt very anxious with this film so not the funnest watching experience. The animation is very nice for the time and I feel it does nice for what it sets out to do but I just didnt enjoy the premise or the way it was presented. As I stated I was looking for much more relaxing films hence the reason I joined this hof but Akira was just a bit two energetic and heavy for my liking.

So basically it does what it sets out to do well but I just dont personally care for what it accomplishes. Im sure those fans of old anime films will for sure enjoy this one.

I have no idea why you're asking me this. Those adults obviously don't look like teenagers, and the way you worded that made it sound like you thought I think they do.

I think gbgoodies just saying that both nominations have people that don't look like teenagers but people are complaining about Stand By Me and not Grease 2.

If it was Little Monsters I could see that being an issue, but the kids in SBM smoke, jerk off, and runawaty from home. Its a teen movie. Thats enough loop hole for me, personally.

Hmmm, I thought someone else said they were nominating Heathers, or I definitely would have put that one up. Probably my favorite 80s teen flick....

Is it too late to change my pick?

...Who knows, maybe in my old age I'll get one. Like a Charger or a Challenger. Would love one of them, just for the loudness of them.I'd love to have a Challenger or a new Mustang. But I'm a poor boy and besides I have no place to park them.

I was told to nominate it.

I said I wouldn't because I haven't seen it.

I actually like the fact that a very large portion of these films is lesser known films.

Before I decided I don't want to watch about a dozen 80s teen movies I was considering three films of which two would have matched that criteria.

Voyage of the Rock Aliens (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096402/) (I didn't find a workable copy anywhere but I kinda want to rewatch this at some point. Liked it as a kid and it has Michael Berryman.)

Savage Streets (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088044/) (This seemed more easily available and I'll probably rewatch it too. I don't remember it being particularly good but I remember it has great visuals topless Linda Blair.)

Red Dawn (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087985/) (The only well known film I contemplated. It's not great but it's so damn 80s.)

I picked my nom because I wanted a film not too obscure but also not too popular.

Its such a cool movie because it delivers on three fronts;

Touchstone 1980's humor

Craft on display for the film techies

It has a good payload for an ending.

My Bodyguard (1980)

Dir. Tony Bill
(https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0082300/)
http://www.retroland.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/MyBodyguardFinal.png

Clifford Pearce is a nerdy kid attending his first day at a new school and quickly becomes the target of school bully, Moody. An unlikely friendship is formed when he turns to quiet-tough-kid, Linderman (apparent murderer) for support.

Before coming into this movie I did not have high expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had some serious themes which it portrayed quite well. I liked that the film centered mainly around it's two main characters getting to know each other better and improving themselves through one another.

I had not heard of this film before starting this tournament and I am pleased to stay that I thoroughly enjoyed it! :)

Fun Fact:

David Foster and John Parr wrote this song specifically for the movie St. Elmo's Fire, but the song itself is about a Canadian athlete named Rick Hansen, who was paralyzed from the waist down after a car crash when he was 15. On March 21, 1985 Hansen began his "Man In Motion" tour, traveling about 70 miles a day to raise money for spinal cord research. At first, Hansen had trouble getting media attention and donations, but when this song was released with the movie in June, it became his anthem, and as the song rose up the charts, interest in Hansen's journey grew. By the time the "Man In Motion" tour was completed on May 22, 1987, Hansen had put over 40,000 Kilometers (24,856 miles) on his wheelchair in 34 countries on four continents, raising $26 million. He became a national hero in Canada, where he is closely associated with this song.

I picked my nom because I wanted a film not too obscure but also not too popular.

That was my thinking with Lucas. My favourite 80s teen film is Some Kind of Wonderful (anyone else a fan of this?), or I could have picked any other John Hughes film, or Heathers or so many others that are well known. But I think Lucas is a quite little seen one, and one I feel quite a connection to. Packed full of proper 80s icons as well, Corey Haim, Winona Ryder, Charlie Sheen, Kerri Green, and a great 80s soundtrack.

Happy with the rest of the selections, including my own, Ive only seen 3 (Stand By Me and Say Anything the others, which I dont mind seeing again) and havent even heard of some of the others, so something new. I think I have access to a couple of the others, Ill check my sources tomorrow and let you know if there are any Im struggling to find.
