View Full Version : MOFO 80's Teen Movie Hall of Fame
well your gonna have alot of problems internet wise if you use hulu. It is way more intensive then netflix in my experience
I started Say Anything...
Ione Skye is so adorable. I love her lisp, or cleft palate. The guy who plays the father..I should know his name because I enjoy everything he's in when his scenes are on..most recently Moonstruck, I love his role. He was in Tin Men and many, many others I've seen. He's like a sure bet when he's on-screen.
This is a different kind of teen comedy. Compared to a lot of teen comedies it comes off more realistic. Love it when Dobbler smells the plastic brain in Diane's bedroom. Something I would do, hahaha. The sub plot with bitter ex GF and "Joe". Forgot about that. Probably gonna finish it tonight since I slept all day (very uncommon for me).
Thoughts on Say Anything
My favorite line “she makes me trust myself”
Cusack is a solid kickboxer
A few effectively emotional moments
This is my third tome seeing it. Always liked it
Soundtrack is the weakest part of the film
On to commentary by cameron crowe to hopefully knock me out for more sleep

I think gbgoodies just saying that both nominations have people that don't look like teenagers but people are complaining about Stand By Me and not Grease 2.
Yes, that's what I was trying to say.
It's not a complaint about either movie being nominated in this HoF. It was just a curiosity about why some people were upset about the kids being too young to be teenagers in one movie, but not about the actors being too old to be teenagers in another movie.

It's very rare they ever have teenagers playing actual teenagers. One of the closest casts I think was American Pie, all of the main boys cast were all about 17-19 playing 18 year olds.
Also read that infamously Christopher Mintz-Plasse was only 17 when he filmed Superbad, so his mum had to be on set for his sex scene...I can't think of anything more embarrassing to be honest!

So I've just had a check of all my sources, and the only ones Im struggling to find are Once Bitten, My Bodyguard, Grease 2 and Three o'Clock High. Will just try and sork through the others while I keep looking. At least got plenty others to work through until then. If anyone knows an online source for any of these or streaming service, it's a big help. (I'm in the UK) For anyone else in the UK, if you have Amazon Prime, you can get a 7 day free trial of the MGM channel which has Teen Wolf.

Roland Miller is part of the nerd circle at his highschool at Arizona but has a crush on popular cheerleader, Cindy. Rather than spedning his hard earned money on the telescope, he 'rents' her to pretend to be her boyfriend and become more popular.
This film sure has its cringe moments, but there were also a number of genuinely heartfelt instances too. I also found myself enjoying how both Rolands and Cindy's characters in particular developed over the course of the narrative. Good stuff!

That is sad to hear, Heaven Help Us was one of many I was truly looking forward to. I may watch it as a tribute. We'll see if I time it out, right, to do just that.

I checked the availability of My Bodyguard on Google before I nominated it, and Google lists that it's available on Vudu, Amazon Prime, and iTunes for $2.99 - $3.99 depending on the site. I think I also saw it available on YouTube for $2.99, or a low quality copy on YouTube for free.

I started watching Say Anything last night, but I was too tired, so I had to turn it off. Nothing against the movie, I've just had a very long weekend, and I couldn't stay awake. I'm going to try to watch it again either tonight or tomorrow.
I'm right there with you. Been driving through four states this past week and while I've started one of my favorite movies ever (Better Off Dead), I just haven't been able to finish it. UGH.
Love the movie still, and it's actually better (and more influential) than I remember, in some ways.

This is an interesting one. Should have joined earlier but has been a ridic busy month. Never done a hall of fame but i assume all nominations are done and its about to start? I'll just keep track of this thread and watch as many of the nominations as I can but obviously that wont effect the score which is all good and will still be fun...for me :)

Might i bring forth Hellraiser from 1987?
..Never done a hall of fame but i assume all nominations are done and its about to start?...I would love to have both of you join:) But we've already started AND it's already a big HoF, so if we take too many people it then becomes real hard for everyone to watch all the movies, then people drop out, which causes movies to be disqualified.
So how about both of you can join as Honorary Members. Ms. M is doing that....and as an Honorary Member you can select a movie nomination, but...it will be optional for the other members to watch it.
If you guys watch all the movies and post about them you can vote (which comes at the end of the HoF). I think that's a good all around solution:) So just PM me or MovieGal and let us know.

Sorry guys, I haven't been around much. I haven't been feeling very well for a few weeks actually. Many times at work I feel like I'm going to black out and get a weird feeling in my head and my hands. I have been trying to go to bed early to see if it's caused by not getting enough sleep.
I'm off work Oct 31 through Nov 5 so I plan on a doctor's appointment and watching several of the movies.
Let's hope for the best.

I watched Say Anything and Can't Buy Me Love yesterday, and I started watching Better Off Dead, but that's when I just couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, so I'll have to watch it again tomorrow.
I haven't had a chance to get my thoughts together about these movies yet, but I just wanted to mention something that I noticed. Even though they're kind of similar teen movies, there's a big difference in the way they portray reality.
Say Anything is a much more realistic movie than the other two movies. The characters are almost depressed through much of the movie.
However, Can't Buy Me Love has some parts that feel realistic, but there's an unrealistic side to the movie in the way that he's able to buy his way into the world of the "cool kids".
In contrast, Better Off Dead feels like much more of a fantasy movie than reality. The story itself is realistic, in that his girlfriend broke up with him and he doesn't want to live without her, but he seems to have hallucinations throughout the movie.
I'm not saying that any of these are better or worse than any other. I just thought it was an interesting side of these movies.

So the 80s high school genre is one I always have a soft spot for, but well aware that for all the good ones, there are always some seriously bad examples. Sadly I think this is one of them.
Take every jokey negative trope of the genre and the decade, the horrendous slow motion montages, the terrible masculinity that being good at sports makes you suddenly infallible as a human being, the bad BAD soundtrack, massively slutty dreamgirl who of course is dating that older douchebag who despite also being good at sports, everybody hates, little bit of casual homophobia, and you mostly have the bad side of the genre. Enjoy!
Kudos, I did full on laugh out loud the dad/ werewolf reveal...

You can watch the movies in your leisure, just b4 the deadline..check very 1st page for all that info..what you do is, watch a film, write somethign about it when you can, and once everyone watches the films and writes/discusses, they send in a numbered list from 1-whatever..ranking their fave as #1 and their least as #whatever..but..the lowest number.
From there a tally is done up and a winner is announced..but as an honorary member I'm not sure how the end result works into all of that.
For the time being, just relax, join the film watching and discuss...to me, this isn't so much a competition as it is a cool way to be in a movie club.

Crossroads (1986)
*spoilers*
I really liked this. It's a very different type of film and it surprised me, that's a good thing.
I figure if the movie holds my interest and I'm into the story, I don't check the clock too much and I do think about the movie the next day...Then that's a good movie in my book. And Crossroads did all that for me.
It's a very different mix of styles. At first I thought it would be like Karate Kid with Ralph Macchio reprising his role. But then the movie turns more serious and we see his character Lighting Boy getting involved in crime and even packing a gun. I was really surprised the film had the girl Frances, played by Jami Gertz getting involved in prostitution.
Then just when I thought I had a handle on the film, it shifts gears and we get this twist style ending with the devil and a play off for ownership of the soul. The movie reminded me of the country westeren song The Devil Went Down to Georgia by the Charlie Daniels band in 1979.
Oh, also it was very cool to see Tim Russ (Tuvok from Star Trek Voyager) in the beginning of the film as the young Blind Dog.
I dug the entire blues scene and the music and really enjoyed the on-location shooting in Mississippi.
Very impressive film and one that has set the bar high for me in the HoF. @ynwtf (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=95589)

Three O'Clock High (1987)
*spoiler*
Another surprisingly different type of teen movie, I liked it!...When it first started, I thought, what the hell it's a Ferris Bueller clone. Nope it's not! It's very different, which is a big plus. The movie surprised me at the turns it took. The entire story takes place in one school day...with a whole lot of crap happening to our protagonist. Who btw, really looked like a young Kevin Spacey.
I kept thinking the movie was set in the 90s as the kids all looked like they belonged on the set of the Cosby TV show, with their short hair and sweater vest. I doubt anyone here but MovieGal and me will know why these kids looked like that...anyone got a guess?
That was called the preppie look. I never went for it, I had the rocker look with long hair, but I remember seeing kids with the preppie look and I thought it was lame, ha:p
Back to the movie, these actors were all unknown but they sure pulled it off and I have to say the fight scene at the end was riveting! I was screaming knock the *&%$# head off !...OK I wasn't actually screaming at the TV screen, but I was kind of thinking it.
Cool nom @Joel (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=96380)

Heaven Help Us (1985)
This was Cricket's nomination before he withdrew from this Hof. It's NOT required for the members to watch, but I wanted to see it anyway:)
And I'm very glad I did watch it, it's a serious drama about a harsh Catholic boy's school in 1965. A lot of the filming was done on location which really makes the film feel real. Even though it's a drama it has a few comic moments that I enjoyed too.
This was the debut film of Kevin Dillion who would go on to star in Platoon. Dillion's performance alone is worth watching! He's so good at portraying his character, he's quite colorful. John Heard as the kindly, young Catholic Brother was a nice role and he balanced out another strong performance by Jay Patterson who plays a sadistic Catholic Brother. Andrew McCarthy who starred in a number of brat pack teen movies is pretty good as the quiet new student who comes into the world of the Catholic School. Heck everyone is good!
This would have finished high on my list had the movie remained in the HoF. Good movie @cricket (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=68505)

kind of a tough call. We had a very basic three cliques: Straight A's, Jocks and Burnouts with a number of people that crossed over and a very few rare that were all three.
You could have easily been a cross over, question, which crossovers?

They were the mean b*tches to me until they learned who he was. I had some good memories and bad because of this I will never go to any high school reunions.

That's a solid 3 life lessons that everyone should know and follow.
Cliques seemed foolish after the fact for me since before then, we were all just "kids" going to school. But it would be a lie if I claimed that I didn't follow along the clique protocol at the time of high school.
Life did become far more intriguing and exciting when I stopped shortly after the end of high school.

They are things we realized as adults but still as teens, we try to fit in because friendships are important. I don't have any friendships from high school. My daughter was lucky to keep few as close friends. She's only 25 years old but things may change as life continues to change for her.

Can't Buy Me Love (1987)
So far I've watched 4 teen movies and I've enjoyed everyone of them. And yet they're all very different.
Can't Buy Me Love is more comedy than the others, but...what I liked is it never went overboard with the jokes. And it did evoke some strong emotions from me as it covers some pretty heavy stuff in the movie. There are two ultimate truths in this movie. I don't know if others will agree, but I sure seen them.
I liked Patrick Dempsey's character in the movie. I'm impressed and can't think of another actor who could have pulled off the unpopular geeky kid who then buys his way into the 'cool clique' of kids. He handled all of that really well.
Amanda Peterson who played the head cheerleader and most popular girl in school, was also impressive in this. She wasn't just a stereo type but we learn that she has her own price to pay for being popular...and we see that for her being popular isn't always a positive thing. I was really sad to read about Amanda Peterson on Wiki:( She was only 15 when she made the movie and reading about her life made me feel even more melancholy about the movie. And that's the main emotion I felt during the movie, a sense of melancholy and loss...and I like movies like that.
I think the build up to the end was pretty great with Patrick Dempsey's character being exposed as a fraud and how the entire school ostracized him. If I could change one thing it would be the last minute of the film:
I wish at the very end of the film the girl had NOT came back to him. For me the happy ending diminished the strength of the previous moments when he tells her he's glad all of this happened to him as he learned the importance of being who you are.

Once Bitten
(1985)
1980's Teen Movies never tend to grow old. Once Bitten was just as great as any other time I have seen it. A great film for Halloween as well. Jim (James) Carrey is funny and Lauren Hutton is still beautiful for her age. In the dance sequence, Jim reminds me of a "younger Dick Van Dyke", which is one of the great comedians of all time. Also, he has a way of making facial expressions that will keep you laughing.
As Robin and Mark arrived at the school dance, there was a song that was playing and I was like "I know those lyrics". The song was sung on the film by a female band but I knew that wasn't the real version of the song. I looked it up and yes, I absolutely knew the song. It was from the 1982 album "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" performed by Rick Springfield.
I feel this is like my other favorite 80s films, "Pretty In Pink" and "The Breakfast Club", that I could just randomly watch it over and over again.

Hellraiser, though? I mean, it's cool, but is it a teen movie? Maybe it is, I haven't seen it in a long time.
I suppose an argument could be made either way. Not sure what I was thinking when I posted this.
Anyway - I sort of see the mainstream horror franchises as teen appealing (Friday the 13th, Scream, Nightmare etc.).

Lucas (1986)
I didn't care for this one. I found the character Lucas to be an annoying little sh**. I didn't view him as the endearing underdog that we usually cheer for in these kinds of movies. He was more creepy and bizarre than anything else. I kept thinking he would be the type of passive-aggressive misfit who would show up at school with a gun. That's the kind of weird vibe I got from him. And that kept me from liking the film. He was rather stupid too for such a smart kid, I mean when I was 14 I had enough sense not to bring tadpoles to school and try to give them to a 16 year old girl. Lucas is clueless, hell he actually had a chance with Winona Ryder's character but he didn't even care.
As much as I didn't like Lucas...I did like both Charlie Sheen and Kerri Green. Both of them had good screen presences and I instantly connected to their characters. I wish the film had left Lucas out and been about them instead.
The other thing I didn't like was the script/writing. Sure the premise sounds good, but the pacing of the film and the way scenes progressed seemed pretty amateurish. It's like the director, who also wrote the movie, didn't know how to connect the scenes together. The film just kind of meanders and is lackluster. It reminded me of an old after school TV movie special.

Can't Buy Me Love
(1987)
This is a common thing in most 80's Teen films, the clique. Cliques tend to be important to younger people but as they grow older they learn that they are meaningless. Some say it helps create the person we are meant to be. But if you notice, most cliques are judgemental to one or more other cliques. Society, over the years, has taught us to take whatever it means to success, from business to friendships,
I enjoyed this movie again. There was many "Ronnie's" out there when I was growing up. People who just wanted to belong to a more social higher group. Once he got to the standard he wanted to, he wanted more. More isn't what he needed, it took him past of who he really was.
Cindy is the girl every girl wanted to be in high school. The popular, most beautiful person full of friends. Friends that may be shallow or sincere but everyone wanted to be a "Cindy". I knew a lot of "Cindys" during my high school years. Even today I see it, people who havent moved on in life but look back into these cliques.
This was a heart-warming fun teen movie. A movie that most probably has seen from my generation, if not in continuing generations.
Trivia: did anyone take notice who played Ronnie's little brother, Chuckie?

Akira
This had always been, for the longest time, THE go-to film for Japanese Animation whenever someone wanted to explore such films.
Even though, as a tyke I saw a few Americanized animated TV shows like Speed Racer and Kimba; The White Lion, when this came out, it was pretty mind-blowing when it came to animation. At that time in the 80s, this was the next generation of Japanese artwork and still comes up in conversations when talking about Anime.
Also, this is on a VERY small list of films that I will select Dubbed instead of Subtitles. Another, coincidentally as the same person doing the voice for Kei also does Faye, in Cowboy Bebop (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0213338/?ref_=nv_sr_1).
But, enough of that.
Opening up with an incredible fight on motorcycles through the streets of Tokyo, we hit the ground running in this action/sci-fi of a futuristic city (2019) and the clash of these delinquents and a genetic experiment that is accidentally unleashed on one of them.
Bouncing from the corrupt scientists, to the Military attempts to contain it all, to Radicals looking to rebel the system and expose the secret of said experiment, to the psychic children who are the most recent subjects of it, the pacing moves quickly. And at first, may seem a little confusing. Especially as we move toward the final act and the grandiose battle as the experiment takes over the young gang member, Tetsuo.
Interspersed throughout the swearing, violence and psychic battling we do have, at it's core, the need for finding one's self that is a strong aspect of being a teenager. Albeit set in a science fiction/Militant existence. But still, very much there.
Been TOO LONG since the last time I saw this excellent animation.

Weird Science (Honorary Nomination)
This has to be one of Hughes most outlandish excursion into teenage awkwardness and the need to fit in, and for me, one of the most quotable and hilarious of the bunch.
When two geeks decide to use a computer to create a real woman and get Kelly LeBrock the outrageous fun begins.
From the hilarious Blues Bar Scene to having to submit to a bullying older brother, to a having a crazy house party where Mad Max villians crash the fun, our two geeks learn the valuable lesson of being yourself is what truly matters.
This is, of course, far more fantastical when it comes to plot lines, but it is D@MN funny and a great lil ride.
For the Hughes films out there, I am pretty stoked that this one showed up, even if only as an Honorary.

rating - 3
80's Teen Rating - 4
Right off the bat, no pun intended, the film screams 80's. So I knew I was going to like it to some degree. There is something about the 80's decade that just appeals to me. The clothes, the music, the vibe. Maybe I should have been a teen in the 80's.
The film has The Countess, a 400+ year old vampire who needs to suck the blood of a virgin to retain her youthful beauty. She picks Jim Carrey, a sexually frustrated teenager whose been trying to get it on with his girlfriend, but she isn't ready. A comical opening with them in a car surrounded by every other car rockin' had me chuckle. Well, he goes to the Vamp's place and she sucks his blood. Is it done yet? Nope, she has to do it two more times to complete the ritual. Is he doing okay? Nope, he's slowly becoming pale, wearing black, sensitive to light and he can't seem to find his reflection in the mirror. How can they stop the Countess and save the virgin at the same time?
Cue a lot of dated sexual humour. When Robin, his girlfriend, goes to a bookstore to get more information on vampires (something this guy knows way too much about) there are a few awkward jokes thrown around. She asks him "will a female vampire suck the blood of an 18 year old boy?" The man replies with a quick "No" and a smile. "How can you be so sure?" she asks. "The female vampire needs the blood of a virgin. If an 18 year old boy is a virgin, he has bigger problems than vampires on his hands". Oomph.
That pales in comparison to a bit in the shower. When his buddies try to see if they can spot the bite marks on his inner thighs, fellow students see this as a homosexual act and proceed to yell out FAG ALERT, FAGS IN THE SHOWER. Cringe-worthy. It all accumulates to Robin giving in to Mark (Carrey) in order to save his life. What a line eh? You need to have sex with me...my life depends on it. I'm not entirely sure how the sex stuff played out back in the mid 80's, but it's dated and awkward now.
The rest of the film is solid gold though. Jim Carrey's first leading role I think. He pulls his usual limber and comedic facial bits here and there. A standout scene is a dance off between Mark - Robin - The Countess. Who knew he had so many moves? I watched this film through the eyes of "This is an 80's teen comedy" and took it at that value. Is it a "good" film? That's debatable, but it's one that I enjoyed. I mean come on, this movie has a vampire pushing over an elderly woman in a department store for crying out loud. It's funny.
And I'm sorry, as attractive as Lauren Hutton is....Karen Kopins had this cute factor going on that I couldn't stop thinking about.

Although I disagree with you about the ending, I felt so bad for him when she exposed him as a fraud, but after the way he acted once he became part of the "cool kids", he deserved it.

The problem with these cliques is that they don't always end when we graduate high school. They just change names. They're no longer "cliques". They're "prejudices", and they become much more dangerous as adults.
BTW, Ronnie's little brother was played by a young Seth Green. Sometimes it seems like he's in just about everything.

You're supposed to buy the chocolate chip uncooked cookies, but by the tub, not the break-apart kind. Then you can just eat them with a spoon. No oven required. :D

Im the one stood up without the jumper, dont feel Ive changed much at all! Thats me and my 'clique,' in year 11, so we're 16. The irony being that all this talk of cliques, our little crew was basically a makeup of misfits. One of us was a metalhead, one was super smart academic, one was the opposite, one was Irish, one was way out there, and one was super shy. I wont ask for the guesses of which one was me! This was in 2002, so way later than the 80s, but while they may not have been as clearly defined as they were in these films, they definitely still existed. Anyone a little bit chubby or poor or short or slutty or remotely effeminate boys were still the biggest targets from the bullies. I mainly enjoyed high school, despite never being what anyone could describe as popular. But the most apt line ever comes from a Bowling For Soup song, 'nothing changes but the faces, the names and the trends. High school never ends.'
Im still in this, just trying to avoid reading any reviews yet of the ones I havent seen as I dont want them to colour mine. Im on a night shift tonight, so only have access to films I have on DVD, so might rewatch Weird Science or Lucas, since they;re the only ones available to me.

Once Bitten (1985)
I watched this on Halloween instead of Trick 'r Treating:p It was fun seeing Jim Carey so young. The dance scene was my favorite part of the movie. Boy, that girl could dance too. She must have been a professional dancer as she was really good. Even Jim Carey busted a few moves.
The funniest scene was in the high school locker room showers when his two friends were trying to check his inner thigh for a vampire bite, ha!
I might have seen bits of this on TV way back in the day, but I didn't remember it, so maybe not. Oh, the movie score was great in this. Both the score and the actual songs that were used. I never heard any of those songs before and didn't recognize the names of the bands, but I did enjoy them...The score was much better than generic electronic synth muzak.

Better Off Dead
(1985)
This is a typical teen romance story. Guy loves his current girlfriend he's only known a few months. Girlfriend wants to date a popular guy, so she dumps current boyfriend. Guy tries to find ways to kill himself because he cants live without her. Factors come into his life that makes him re-evaluate how he feels about her. Along the way, he meets an exchange student who is female and with her help, he overcomes how he feels about his ex-girlfriend, finds that many things are possible with a help of a friend. There is some comedy to this movie but just enough.
There are some funny things in this film, like the Asian brothers, where one only learned to speak English by watching Wide World of Sports and they constantly want to race the main character. A few actors in this film are very popular from other films - Mr. Vargas from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", Karen from "Last American Virgin", Loryn from "Valley Girl" and Booger from "Revenge of the Nerds".
One of the greatest lines from this is
"Now that’s a damn shame, when folks be throwin’ away a perfectly good white boy."

If you think about this, this is a teenager's version of "Mary Poppins".
Two guys who are considered nerds create the woman of their dreams in order to get laid and become popular. She helps these guys out with that and finding love. She takes them to a bar, sticks up for them against bullies, invites many over to a party where they take on several gangs, even help them handle one of the boy's older bully brother. All in the process of helping them find the courage and young love.

That's an interesting question. I know Oingo Boingo's guitarist Steve Bartek has conducted for Elfman, and also done his own score work (Cabin Boy).
I wonder why someone like Bartek isn't more used in film score? He's clearly more attuned to the dynamics of theory and music - with Danny providing his usual brooding symphonic or carnival themed import, and Bartek doing those amazing and tasty guitar slide into odd note riffs in Boingo songs.
Just by that you know the guy is a hardcore creative. Which is more than I can say that Elfman is.

Crossroads
(1986)
This was a bit different than the other teen films on this HOF. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The music was good and it was interesting to see Steve Vai in it. The story of a classically trained guitarist searching for his blues idol and the lost song. Along the way, they meet up with a young runaway from a broken home. At the crossroad, you learn that the idol sold his soul to learn to play so great.
It is a teen film but more of a dramatic type.

As Danny Elfman was growing up in the Los Angeles area, he was largely unaware of his talent for composing. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Danny and his older brother Richard Elfman started a musical troupe while in Paris; the group "Mystic Knights of Oingo-Boingo" was created for Richard's directorial debut, Forbidden Zone (1980) (now considered a cult classic by Elfman fans). The group's name went through many incarnations over the years, beginning with "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" and eventually just Oingo Boingo. While continuing to compose eclectic, intelligent rock music for his L.A.-based band (some of which had been used in various film soundtracks, e.g. Weird Science (1985)), Danny formed a friendship with young director Tim Burton, who was then a fan of Oingo Boingo. Danny went on to score the soundtrack of Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Danny's first orchestral film score. The Elfman-Burton partnership continued (most notably through the hugely-successful "Batman" flicks) and opened doors of opportunity for Danny, who has been referred to as "Hollywood's hottest film composer".

Better Off Dead (1985)
A fun distraction for a Saturday night evening...it went well with the pizza that I made. The pizza didn't turn out great and was only OK but it was filling and that's how I found the movie. Better Off Dead is well made with a personable cast, My favorite was the French exchange student, she paired well with a crusty and sometimes saucy John Cusack.
The film's broad style of comedy is what is refereed to as sight gags, It's jokes reminded me of the beloved comedy, Airplane. The problem is I'm one of the few people on the planet who hated Airplane...I just don't like broad comedy sight gags. I prefer my comedy to come from the situation or the character's personality. So Better Off Dead didn't really work for me, even though I can see it would be to many people's liking. I did laugh a few times and all the characters were interesting and I have no real complaints. I dug the snow and skiing scenes which were actually shot on a mountain and so that was great to see.

Grease 2 is not an easy movie to critique. If we view it as a film on it's own merits I suppose it's a good enough musical. The film has great production values, an extremely deep cast and Michelle Pfieffer gives a star making performance in it. But even viewing it on it's own it still has issues, I saw this film yesterday and I couldn't name three songs from it. The best parts of the film are the side characters (I would have loved to have seen a Sid Caesar High School Coach film, or a guy trying to get laid while the bombs fall film) this movie just had an incredibly bland lead.
What makes Grease 2 a horrible film is it's needless, Grease is perfect this was just a rehash that could never live up to the original. This film lacked so many elements that made the first so good (Travolta's dancing, Sandy's character arc, memorable songs) this film just left me with a sense of what was missing rather than what I saw.

funny thing is, at work, I have three computer screens ha ha Heck I'd give that a try some time, just saying, it could be a time saver.
Probably you can't watch movies at work though:(
Elfman has said that he would record his voice into a micro recorder on a plane when an idea hit, and then flesh out the details later in the studio. I am still trying to figure out what he plays proficiently for instruments. Like, does he literally pad everything out and have Bartek transcribe all his brass and strings to the orchestra? I'm going to assume that is close to the process. Elfman seems like he isn't a master class musician, but is still able to dream up all the necessary sections and counterpoints of a piece of music.
In some ways, that could be like gardening. The cheerleader drops a seed into the soil and struts away while the gardener labors for hours tilling and nurturing the growth and realization of the bloom.

Hahaha. Welcome to my world!
I've seen 3 movies from all nominated:
1. Stand by me.
It surprised me by tension atmosphere. Kiefer Sutherland was quite heavy:) Even the goal of their trip is a little bit creepy, as they set up to find their friend body! I would say it is movie rather for boys, as there isn't any feminine character in their team, but I watch it with pleasure. It remainds me Mark Twain's stories. And need to say, that boys were then good actors and grew up for even better.
2. Grease 2.
I've made mistake, I watched Grease 2 few days after Grease, so the first one didn't have a chance. I had the feeling that second part was incapable attempt of imitation the first part. Maxwell Caulfield never was my favourite actor, but even Michelle Pfeiffer couldn't blunt bad taste in my mouth.
3. Teenwolf.

Teen Wolf
(1985)
spoilers ahead........
Such a great teen movie. I loved this growing up but what girl did not love anything that Micheal J Fox was in.
This movie follows a lot of other teen movies where the outcast wants to fit in with the click. In the case of Scott Howard, he became a Lycan though a birthright passed from his father. They don't give much of a backstory to how the family became werewolves. Scott's mother appears to be out of the picture, presumed dead or MIA. Scott informs his best friend Stiles of his new "transformation". Stiles motivates are to exploit Scott's ability and make money and give Scott popularity. In the background, you see Boof, Scott's close female friend who he has known since very young children and shares secrets with as well. You can tell Boof is in love with Scott but accepts there may be a change, at some point, she can be with Scott. There is a popular girl, Pamela, and her popular boyfriend, Mick, who is afraid that Pamela will leave him for Scott the Wolf. At a dance, Mick approaches Scott and punches him, telling him to stay away from Pamela. Scott uses his "wolfieness" in anger and leaves. Scott no longer wants to be the "Wolf" and decides to quit basketball on the day of the championship. Scott decides to play and informs coach, he will not be the wolf. The team wins the championship, even with Mick making illegal moves that cause Scott to foul. In the end, Scott realizes he doesn't need the wolf and popularity isn't so important. The movie ends with Pamela walking toward Scott and Scott moving past her to be with Boof.
Again, Teen Wolf follows popularity as does Once Bitten, Weird Science and Can't Buy Me Love, the normal theme for most 80's Teen Movies.

Stand By Me
An iconic film with quite the cast that would continue onward to other things. And not just the four main kids. Which, there is a bit more grimness, knowing the River Phoenix, who plays Chris Chambers, the best friend who's death inspires the writer to think back on this turbulent adventure about seeing a dead body.
But there is John Cusack as the older brother Denny and one of the gang boys, Charlie, who, would join Keifer in Young Guns playing a character named. . . wait for it. . . . that's right, Charlie.
When this originally came out, Stephen King was in quite the merry-go-round of writing about him and his friends, again and again and again and again, that it bugged me so much that I had a very hard time of enjoying this film for the d@mn good story and emotional vehicle that it truly is.
Dealing with broken homes, distant parents and the emotional weight of this along with simply just being a twelve year old kid with the usual bullies that include an older brother; we take a very harrowing journey down the figurative railroad tracks to witness the result of another boy who died on said railroad tracks. Along with every side adventure and emotional baggage that falls loose from each of the boys as the journey and the adventure continues to its outcome.
Reflective, introverted and self-examining, we get to the heart of our boys before life and adulthood separates them leaving us with the final typed words on Lachance's computer screen. "I have not had friends like I did when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"

Say Anything (1989)
A lot of truth in this movie, at least for me there was. It was spooky how so much of what happened with John Cusack's charater, in one way or another happened to me too. Not all of it of course, and not all at the same time or even with the same girlfriend, but enough similar stuff that this movie was like a trip down memory lane.
Then we get to that screen shot above and I was floored! I drove past that coffee pot building just two days ago! I've seen that building a lot during my life. So was I surprised when John Cusack drives his car past Bob's Java Jive. But weirdly I've never been inside of it. Maybe next time I will, it still looks the same btw and they still have espresso.
I really appreciated the realness and honesty of the film. It felt much more personal than most other teen movies, almost like a documentary, except I didn't go off to England at the end.

My Bodyguard
(1980)
spoilers attached.....
Clifford is new at a school and has confrontations with Moody, the school bully. Moody demands everyone pay him protection money from Linderman, a troubled young man. Rumors around the school are that Linderman killed another student, beat up a teacher, etc which none are true. Clifford tries to befriend Linderman and hire him to be his bodyguard from Moody. Linderman agrees to it and they confront Moody who backs down. Clifford presses harder to understand Linderman and they become closer and build a friendship. Linderman explains to Clifford that his younger brother was killed by a gun accident. Moody can't stand that he no longer has control and hires Mike to bully Linderman. Mike confronts Linderman who backs away. Linderman runs off and Clifford goes to look for his friend. Linderman explains that his younger brother's death was his fault. He explains he was the one showing off with their father's gun and when his brother grabbed the gun, it fired killing his brother. Mike confronts Linderman again and they fight. While Linderman has the lead, Moody jumps in and holds Linderman for Mike to get more hits. Clifford seeing this as unfair finally pulls Moody off and proceeds to fight him himself. Linderman tells Clifford to aim for the nose and Clifford wins the fight.
I loved the fact that Ruth Gordon was in this film. She was a very good actress. This movie has more of a 70's teen film more than the normal 80's and very much a New York setting.

Once Bitten (1985)
I watched this on Halloween instead of Trick 'r Treating:p It was fun seeing Jim Carrey so young. The dance scene was my favorite part of the movie. Boy, that girl could dance too. She must have been a professional dancer as she was really good. Even Jim Carrey busted a few moves.
The dance scene reminded me of the dance scene in the movie Grease, (the first movie, not Grease 2), when Danny was trying to dance with Sandy, but Cha-Cha kept pulling him away from her.

I thought the same thing.
I think the avatars cause some confusion with gender on the internet. When we see a male avatar, it's natural to think that the person using that avatar is male.

Crossroads
It's been a while since I watched Crossroads, but I agree with you about it being more of a drama than a teen movie. I'm not saying that it isn't a "teen" movie, but there's a "feeling" to teen movies that this movie doesn't have, maybe because it doesn't center around school, or camp, or some kind of normal "teen growing pains".
Having said that, I remember this being a great movie, and I'm looking forward to rewatching it. :)

Do you remember any of the songs in the movie?
I'm only asking because I haven't seen this movie probably since it was in the theater, (and if I remember correctly, I didn't really like it), but I still remember a few of the songs. ("Do It For Your Country" and "Cool Rider" are two songs that stuck with me over the years.)

I've been very busy, so I haven't had much time to post my thoughts about the movies yet, but I just want to let everyone know that I've been watching the movies, and I'm still in this HoF.
The movies that I've already watched (or for some movies rewatched) are:
Can't Buy Me Love
Say Anything
Better Off Dead
Lucas
Three O'Clock High - (I watched this twice because Hubby walked in near the end and wanted to watch it with me.)
Once Bitten - (I was surprised to realize part way through the movie that I had already seen this movie.)
I also started watching Teen Wolf last night, but I fell asleep a little more than halfway through the movie. Again, it was nothing against the movie. I was just very tired from too much work. (I have to stop watching movies late at night.)

His name is Jaeden Lieberher. He's 15 years old and plays the lead character "Bill" in the 2017 version of Stephen King's "It".
I started watching Stand By Me and it caught my eye about how Will and Jaeden look alike.
My buddy let me borrow Once Bitten and Better off Dead both on blu ray, so those'll get done soon. Just need to finish the B Movie HoF II: The Sequel before I get too immersed in the 80's teen HoF

Stand By Me
(1986)
A film about friendship, love, loss and understanding. A film about being at an innocent age where coming into adulthood can be overwhelming. Gordie, Chris, Teddie and Vern were best friends that summer before junior high. They were on the hunt for a missing boy's dead body. Along the way, they learned about each other more than they had before.
This film was very emotional. You learn about each of the character's lives and how the friendship affected each one.

Teen Wolf (1985)
A fun little innocuous movie. As good as Michael J. Fox was in the Back to the Future films, he's not really a stand out here. But maybe it's more a fault of the script, it doesn't really have much to say, stuff just sort of happens. It was odd that plot elements were introduced then forgotten. We see he has a friend that after he turns into the Wolf looks frightened and it's said he's not comfortable being around the Wolf. I thought Fox as the wolf would win his friend over by showing he was still the same person inside. Instead that plot line is forgotten. Nothing really special with the movie, but nothing wrong either. It was like I said a fun little innocuous movie to watch. Glad I finally seen it.

Say Anything
(1989)
The story of a normal high school graduate who wants to be with the smart girl that barely anyone knows. Diane has a scholarship to go to a university in England. Lloyd has no clue what he wants to do with his life, but he wants to do is be close to her for the 16 weeks before she leaves. At first she wants to be friends but along the way, she learns what type of guy Lloyd is and falls in love with him. Bad things happen to Diane's family and it forces her to focus on where her life is heading and she breaks off with Lloyd. After she learns the truth about her father, she has no one to fall back on but Lloyd. In the end, Diane and Lloyd are happy together as they both go to England.
It was an ok film. Not one of my favorites.

Akira (1988)
I'm not a big fan of animation, though I've seen some animes that I really liked (Nausicaä Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, Giovanni's Island) I liked those because then explored the human condition. I didn't care for Akira...BUT...I'm not saying it's badly made, in fact I think it was perfect for it's intended audience: teen boys and young males, especially those who were raised on video games and Saturday morning cartoons. It reminded me of cartoons like the Transformers were the characters have magic powers and can transform into strange and powerful beings. And it reminded me of the old 80s Sega video game Road Rage. Anybody play that one?
The animation was great looking and if you like lots of action with little character development, then this film might be to your liking. I'm far outside of the demographics, so this one didn't work for me.

My Bodyguard (1980)
I enjoyed this. I had seen it too but only once and that was decades ago, so I hardly remembered anything other than the motorcycle project scene.
It's weird in that it feels like two different films...That photo I used is of Martin Mull the hotel manager, who trys to keep the hotel running smoothly while keeping his free spirited mom, Ruth Gordon out of trouble...that part felt like another movie. I actually liked the hotel scenes and the going-ons of the hotel more than the high school bully story. But I did like the high school stuff too.
Matt Dillon was a stand out, he's so good at being so crummy! Him and Ruth Gordon were the best. I especially appreciated the actual on location street scenes, that was very nice to see as it was like being there. I wish there had been more interaction and story line between the bodyguard Adam Baldwin (not a Baldwin brother) and the boy (not Wesley Crusher):p...I wish there had been another scene after the fight in the park, where the character's story arches are all wrapped. I wanted to see what happened with Martin Mull and Ruth Gordon, but we never got back to them.

And yes, it did mix some light stuff with some heavy drama making it feel like different films in one.

OMG Captain, that's so weird you said that because I was going to write about an experience with a school bully who I swear looked just like Matt Dillon. As soon as I watched the movie I remembered this kid from school. He was in 9th grade and was a TA for 7th grade music class, I was a 7th grader. He was big time stoner guy and if you would lean back in your chair he would grab it and make it seem like you were going to fall over and would kind of growl at you. I always kept my distances from him, but he didn't actually beat anybody up (that I know of). He did however look and act a lot like Matt Dillon. (edit, there was a lot more I wrote about him as he came to a sad end, but I think I'll delete all of that).

Grease 2
(1982)
I have seen this very long time ago and for some reason, rewatching it now makes me think. Back when I originally saw it, the sexual innuendos weren't so bad but now as I have gotten older, yeah I just don't care much for the songs or the dialog. I understand that yes, all teenagers think about sex while going through puberty. Times are different now than back in the 1950's. I won't compare this to the first Grease movie as that is unfair. I didn't hate it at all. Michelle Pferrer has some good acting moments. I liked seeing Didi Conn in it again. Never a fan of Adrian Zmed or Maxwell Caufield. At first, I was trying to figure out if Akira was a person, machine or event. But I guess its all three. The dystopian society of future Japan and the way the government used and abused society was interesting and with every government like this, you have your "rebels". I love the word "rebels". Better Off Dead
In search of a deep, analytical, gritty, realistic microscope into the the relentless trials and unapologetic tribulations that teenagers suffer through, delving beneath the day to day angst to explore the very heart and soul of this tumultuous time?
BOY did YOU pick the wrong f@ckin movie for that!
With a dad unable to pick up on the proper terminology to speak with his son or be able to protect the windows on his garage door from the psychotic paperboy to the uber-ditsy mom who's meal concoctions are borderline cartoon creatures, to a brooding younger brother that makes lasers, rockets and successfully learns from a book on how to pick up slutty women; John Cusack's character, Lane Meyer does not have it any better outside his home; with a best friend that "can't even find real drugs" to getting caught up in drag racing with a pair of Japanese brothers. Only one of which can speak English by imitating Sports Commentator Howard Cosell. Only to crash into the highly dangerous cameo of the owner of Porky's. Yes, the movie Porky's. Please keep up, thank you.
We hit comedic over exaggeration as Lane fumbles through suicide attempts from being dumped by his girlfriend while trying to win her back by equally fumbling down the slopes of the most dangerous slope there is; the K-12 as everyone around him seem to ask him if it's okay if THEY went out with her.
But fear not my friends, Lane discovers someone far more special than the superficial ex girlfriend by the name of Monique. A French exchange student who is stuck with the neighbors across the street. The son, Ricky, for me, has some very funny bits and is the TRUE final battle for Lane as they duel with ski poles.
A goofball film to cleanse any teen angst film watching pallet.
Rinse, spit, repeat as necessary.

Spader reigns supreme, I have to agree with that. His icy playboy menace mixed with his snide, uppercut personal jabs are as catty as they come.

Stalled atm, but still alive. Few unscheduled deadlines have popped up at work so I've been preoccupied and settling for old Star Trek DS9 background noise.
Should be able to catch up over the break next week.Cool you're watching ST DS9, I love that show. I'm rewatching for the upteenth time ST OS.
I still have Stand By Me, Grease 2. Stand By Me has been on reserved at the library since the start of this HoF. I'm starting to think they don't actually have it. Grease 2 is mine and I loved it, so I'm saving that for last.

I take it ST OS is Star Trek Old School? ;)
I never got into DA9. Always felt Cisco was over-acted when it aired. But I was probably distracted with college and couldn't make time for it too. Always thought Quark was great though.
So I started on S1E1 and I'm in double digits now. I'm only half in though as i have running as I'm doing other things but I've enjoyed it so far. Last episode Kira burned the old man's cottage down.
Sorry if im spelling names wrong! I'm on mobile atm and refuse to chase tabs to check.

Weird Science (1985)
Funny at times, but one of John Hughes' most inept films.
John Hughes was on a roll in the 1980s writing and directing such critically acclaimed hits as: The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck and Plains Trains & Automobiles. All those films have one thing in common...they accurately delve into the psyche of outsider teens. Those films excel at creating character depth which then drives the story forward, thus making those films great.
But John Hughes wrote Weird Science in a mere two days and it shows. Instead of insightful teen angst, that comes from real world type situations, we get fart, boob, crap and bra jokes, in lieu of anything more introspective. The first 20 minutes is pure spectacle as the boys hack into a Pentagon super computer and thereby create the woman of their dreams. I have to say the first 20 minutes was pretty dull, but once Kelly Le Brock shows up things do improve. Oh sure Miss Le Brock was hired for her pouty lips and hot bod, but she's also real good in her role as Lisa, the dream woman with spirit!
Anthony Michael Hall fresh off The Breakfast Club shows he still had the chops to delivery fast dialogue imbibed with his style of jittery quick speech. And he's good too, especially in the blues bar scene when he's drunk and trying to be oh so hip.
On the other hand, his side kick Wyatt played by Ilan Mitchell-Smith, is just plain lack luster with a whiny voice that makes you want to see him get his ass kicked by the mutant bikers that show up at their party.
Very cool to see Australian actor Vernon Wells recreate his role from The Road Warrior (1981) as a mutant biker dude. They even get the mohawk and leather studded costume down pat. I've got to give a shout out to the great Bill Paxton. He was one helluva a colorful bad guy here and a really talented actor too.
Despite a few good actors and a few good laughs, Weird Science main claim to fame for me is the title song by Oingo Boingo.

Years ago I read a book called "Bless The Child".. it was about a drug-addicted young mom who gave her mother her fatherless child to raise... years later, the young mother came back home, all cleaned up from drugs and engaged to a man and she wanted her child back. But things were not as they were to be seen. Now this man was a leader of a satanic cult and believe that this young child could bring back Satan. The book was great... then they made a movie and changed a few things around... Rufus Sewell was the actor who played the satanic cult leader.

Rufus Sewell makes a great bad guy!
I hate him - which means he's really convincing as a villain.
He played Alexander Hamilton in the John Adams (HBO) series - and Hamilton was not portrayed as a great guy in either the series or the book it was based on.
Just caught a bit of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter on TV the other night (I don't watch edited movies with commercials on TV so only glanced at it), but I saw Sewell playing the main Vampire - so now I'd like to see the whole movie.
He was the best part of Bless the Child - he seemed to emanate evil right out of the screen!
Plus I worked with a guy named Sewell who I really didn't like - which only helps in my disliking the evil that Rufus puts into his characters! ;)
As usually I can't find any of movies from thsi HoF, which I haven't seen on legal websites:(
I will watch Akira, because I found it somewhere, but the rest is elusive to me. Too bad:(

Have to agree it lacks depth. I’d sum it up by calling it a 80s nerd ultimate fantasy type movie. Both end up being the heroes and getting the..... spoilers. I watched it again recently with a few others on this list. Apologies haven’t written them up not that I have a vote :) it’s not a movie to be taken seriously. Stand by Me (1986)
I've seen it before and liked it..This time around, I still enjoyed it.
It was nicely shot and that really added to the film's appeal. I enjoyed seeing the country side and the small town. I've been to one of the areas where they filmed, Cottage Grove Oregon.
All the kid actors were excellent in this. I wish there had been more character arcs for the four leads and less time spent with the bigger teen bullies (Kieffer Sutherland and his gang). The teen bullies added nothing to the film IMO and took away from the more important coming of age story. The film was already short at 90 minutes so I don't think the teen bullies were needed. When they were in the film it felt more like a Hollywood entertainment film and I thought they were silly.
I liked the story of the boys going on a distant journey and traveling down the railroad tracks, that was symbolic for them growing up. Good movie.

Grease 2 (1982)
I love this movie! It's fun and energetic! It's light & bouncy and full of energy like an 80s music video. It's got great song numbers, that are more 80s pop rock than they typical movie musical songs. The cast is awesome and everybody looks like they're having a blast going back to school at good ol' Rydell!
I love that much of the filming was done on location and not in a studio. I love that Michelle Pfeiffer did her own singing and her own stunt riding on the motorcycle too. The motorcycle ride scene has got to be the craziest stunt put onto film. She was nuts for doing that:eek:
She's amazing in this and makes the movie, so did the leader of the T-Birds Johnny (Adrian Zmed) who's a blast riot...All of the T-Birds were pretty darn colorful. So were the Pink Ladies, what a fun cast! Many people consider Michael (Maxwell Caulfield) the lead because he gets top billing and yes he's not that exciting, but he's not suppose to be, as he's a square and the male equivalent of Sandy from Grease. His onscreen time is actually limited with Johnny the leader of the T-Birds getting most of the good lines, and that's why the movie works.
I loved the songs: Back to School that one had nice choreography. Michelle Pfeiffer's song Cool Rider and damn she can actual dance too! Loved the part on top of the high ladder, she's fearless. Reproduction is a hilariously naughty & sexual charged song. The bowling alley number is great visually too. And of course my favorite is this:

If I could only watch one movie, Grease 2 might just be it!

I don't know if there is any other film that really captures friendship like this one does. Even though I did not grow up in this time period, I connected with each and every kid with their struggles, their humour and relationships.
Based on the Stephen King short The Body, Stand By Me manages to be unique enough that people forget that it's a Stephen King story. King does well with characters and that translates well to the screen here.
There are a lot of 'moments' in this film that are memorable. I don't think of just one, I think of them all. Pie eating contest, sick-balls, leach on groin, dead body, baseball-mailbox, etc. These scenes act as childhood memories almost.
I don't know if any other film really makes me think about my childhood as much as this one. The last line in this film is depressingly true.
Love this movie.

I never really knew what this movie was about. I knew it starred John Cusack, was an 80's teen comedy, but I also thought he dealt with zombies. I was under the impression it was almost exactly like My Boyfriend's Back (a film I almost nominated). So I was surprised to see it was just about a girlfriend obsessed teen.
At first I was thinking, this guy is legit crazy. 6 months and he has cardboard cutouts of this girl in his closet for every coat hanger? Run girl....RUN!!!!! Then the film quickly acknowledged that we are simply seeing the world through a love-struck teenagers mind. When the food his mom makes decides to run away or when the students' hair stand up due to screeching from chalk on a board, these are moments his mind exaggerates. These little elements take us into the mindset of our protagonist and tell us that what we see is from an unreliable narrator.
As far as 80's teen comedies go, this one is solid. I had a little subplot in my mind where the mother was actually an alien trying to take over a family, but no one would eat her blue food. The always reliable 80's teen sidekick Curtis Armstrong shows up as well. That was like....his thing back in the day.

Say Anything. . .
I will say: SPOILERS
What surprised me about this film, and with that surprise is a gained appreciation, is the emotional honesty that is embedded throughout. Rising to the surface to slip inside of us, the viewers.
It starts off simply and generally.
High school graduation.
Graduation party.
A date between two nervous people who seemed to find a calmness in each other's company. Like so many aspects of the heart, it sort of creeps up on them while life moves forward without pause or gentleness.
Much like the two of them, the enjoyment and fondness for the film did the same for me. It crept up on me til I was more than a little invested and concerned that things would come together for them. I actually was wondering, at one point, if they would be together or say goodbye.
Yeah, I know, in every romance film there is that uncertainty, it's textbook. But, also, when things are more honest and less glossy or glamorized, things do not always work out.
And that final scene as they wait for the ding of the smoking sign and the film ends at the ding, I smiled at such a perfect ending.
Talk about your honest life ending to a film. Expressing how it's one moment to the next, filled with trepidation and anxiety about "will we be okay?" Facing it together. In one another's embrace.
Truly, a BRAVO ending to film that avoided the usual trappings, spoke from the heart sans Hallmark sentiment and, like love will do; creep up on you until you suddenly realize. . .
how you honestly feel.

Why do I have the distinct impression Can't Buy Me Love was definitely dealing with some #Metoo moments.
Can't Buy Me Love is sort of a story of two films, the high school romance and the high school comedy. Strangely I found the high school romance to be much compelling and interesting than the high school part where every side character seemed like a horrible actor. The plot of the film is Ronald having saved up one thousand dollars for a telescope comes across the HS cheerleader trying to buy and replace her mothers one thousand dollar outfit. Ronald cuts a deal with Cindy that if she becomes his GF for a month he'll give her the money for the outfit, she agrees.
During the first act we see Cindy come to terms with dating a guy like Ronald who is into her. She transforms fairly quickly and when the month ends and they break up Cindy is sort of left staggered and stuck in an existential crisis of sorts. Sadly the film is less focused on Cindy's issues and moves towards Ronald becoming popular and turning into a jerk(of sorts).
I'm not sure either one of the two climax's really made much sense to me, they felt tacked on and didn't really ring true. I don't really have much of a clue as to where I'm going to rank this one because I really enjoyed 40% of this one

Can't Buy Me Love (1987)
On the surface, this is the story of a nerdy boy who buys his way into hanging out with the cool kids, but it's more about how that changed him, and the girl who he used to buy his way in.
Once he was "in", he became a jerk, just like most of the kids that he wanted to be. At the same time, the girl got to see how great he was before he changed, and she became a much nicer person. It shows us that being popular isn't necessarily better.
I liked Ronald before he changed, and I didn't think he deserved to end up with Cindy. When he did what he did to his friend's house on Halloween, he showed what being popular really cost him. His best friend, who was a real friend, unlike the jerks who just accepted him because they thought Cindy liked him.
Strangely, the person that I connected to in the movie was his friend Kenneth. When I was in school, I was the type of person who wasn't one of the popular kids, but I had a few very good friends. One day, one of my friends was seduced by the dark side, and she somehow ended up "in" with the popular kids, and she quickly left our small group behind. She changed, just like Ronald did, and she started treating me (and our small group of friends) like we were nobodies. But when the popular kids eventually dropped her, she was alone because we didn't want her back after the way she treated us. (Maybe she should have made a speech like Ronald did to save Kenneth.)

Better Off Dead (1985)
I enjoyed this movie, but at times, it was a little bit too "over the top" for my tastes. Some of it, like the animated hamburger sequence, was so far out that they took me out of the movie.
I liked the idea of Lane being so distraught about losing his girlfriend that he turns to attempting suicide, but I found it annoying that he imagined that everyone else wanted to ask her out. I liked the idea of the psychotic newsboy, but again, they took it too far when there were a whole bunch of kids on bicycles chasing Lane.
I hated Ricky and his mother, and I just wanted Monique to tell them how much she hated them and walk away from them, but she just let Ricky keep putting his hands all over her.
And don't even get me started about the idiot drag racers and the Howard Cosell voice. I wish Lane would have just ignored them so they would have gone away.
I think I would have liked it a little bit more if they had toned down some of the craziness in the movie, but I always like John Cusack, especially in his teen movies, and overall this was an enjoyable movie.

Say Anything... (1989)
I liked that this was one of the more realistic teen movies. All of the characters seemed like real people, and the situations felt like they could really happen in real life.
I liked everything about the romance between Lloyd and Diane, but I wish they would have left out the part about her father and the IRS. I know that it was necessary because it gave her a reason to go back to Lloyd, but I wish they would have found another way to bring them back together.

Crossroads (1986)
I had already seen this movie before watching it for this HoF, and I already knew that it was a great movie, but I never considered it a "teen movie". It doesn't have the "feel" of a teen movie, but rather it has the "feel" of a drama. (However that doesn't take away from how much I loved this movie. :))
The teen romance part of the movie feels like a minor plotline. It's mostly about Ralph Macchio's Lightning Boy and Joe Seneca's Willie Brown, and the journey they take together to the crossroads.
I think what makes this movie great is how we see Macchio's character go from a musical prodigy to a master of the blues. We know that he is a great musician, but as Willie Brown says, his music lacks soul, which he finds through the hardships of his journey and the short romance with Frances, played by Jami Gertz.
I loved the guitar battle at the end, where we see how much he has learned on his journey.
I was very surprised that nobody nominated this movie for this HoF.
Me too. I was sure it would be nominated!

Teen Wolf, I don't know how to feel about this one. On one hand the film has an exceptionally bad problem of one-dimensional characters. Everyone and everything revolves around the lead (Michael J Fox) and even he's not particularly interesting. The film also doesn't really feel like it tells a complete story, in a number of ways this is like a shallower version of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And yet on the other hand I sort of enjoyed the light escapism of the story, it never takes it's self seriously and for whatever reason that ended up working in this case. The movie is at the end of the day a message film, it centers around the idea that you don't need to be exceptional and that you can be exceptional on the inside..or something of that sort. It's an interesting idea and it plays out well especially with the father character.
