Now this.... I used to have this on a P.A. system in my car, it was part of the CB radio... the sound (in the video) was on a chip, so if I pushed a button, this would be played over the CB call channel.... and then, with the P.A. on, coming from under the cars hood... (we call it a bonnet)

Funny thing, I liked it back then, not so much now.

- I learnt @Dani8 (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=95651) likes Throat Singing (love ya, doll)
- I learnt @MovieGal (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=80538) would like to post sick stuff here publicly, although not sure what kind, exactly, gotta ask her privately (love ya, doll, too, don't be jealous)
- I didn't learn anything about @Ms. M (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=96627), but I'm afraid she may be sad that I don't love her, so here it is: I love you, doll
- I learnt @Yoda (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=1) is the chillest site admin ever
- I learnt some more things that I already forgot, oh well...
The thing about being an American, a troll, and a bully, learning that half the music genres is noise, and double standards are okay as long as it suits your agenda I will solemnly leave unelaborated on.

Love ya too Babe but its "learned" I learnt (TEEHEE) that both forms are acceptable. Apparently, learned is more prevalent in American English, whereas learnt appears in British English more often. You see, I studied British English at school, and you can still see its effects to this day. Like adding an extra "u" in words like behaviour, or armour. Learnt is not the only one: I'd rather use burnt than burned as well.

Its all over music, even The Battle Hymn of the Republic... "they have builded him an alter".... I suspect its sort of a writers license to make the words fit, sort of like movie makers with the sounds in space etc.

There is a difference... had I just attacked them without warning... yes..
But they attacked me, I merely defended myself, because of of them ended up in hospital, the Judge said I went too far. so.... not a bully...
Judge said I went too far. so.... not a bully...
Huh?
Maybe self-defense where force was applied beyond necessity to protect safety?
Its kind of like a subtle way of saying, "I am not the guy that they should have been messing with".
My question is, did you really go too far -- I mean with 4 people involved one's life is literally at stake...
Mr Minio
02-13-18, 01:36 AM
Huh? From what he is saying, he was attacked by some people (tough to say whether physically, or verbally), and responded with his fists making them go to hospital. Therefore, the judge decided it was exceeding the limits of necessary defense, and thrown him into jail. It's pretty hard to make out anything out of this situation, because the only witness we have here is the perpetrator of this beating. My guess would be the truth lies somewhere inbetween, as nothing's black or white in this world. Only grey. But that's only my speculation, so please don't take it as a fact.

Hey, that's Ed Gein.
I just looked up this band. Interesting stuff. Not my sort of music, but the references to serial killers got my attention. Yes. That's him. The band is one of the best in the entire punk scene, musically. The noisy, untuned, monotonous sound is infectious. Its ugliness makes it beautiful. The lyrics are an entirely different matter. Inspired by the writings of Peter Sotos, they focus on serial killers, murders, extreme sex, torture etc. In other words, typical stuff MovieGal listens to before she goes to bed.

Huh?
If you get attacked then you can defend yourself. They didn't put me in hospital so I went too far, its like, you can defend yourself but if you produce a gun, then that is going too far. Same logic, by the same token, they were charged with assault and plead guilty. I plead not guilty as I was defending myself... but not so... the law is an ass... if we had had a fight where we all walked away, fine, but that one dude going to hospital meant I "went too far".... I should have stopped a few punches sooner to prevent him ending up in hospital with a concussion.
Its a stupid law.... really... but I accepted it. Had I just plead guilty, I would have had a fine, but I thought I was in the right.... I was the victim.... I was till that guy ended up in hospital..... waddya gunna do?
If I had ended up in hospital too, then it would have been justifiable force to defend myself, but I either punched harder on that guy, or he had a "glass skull".... either way.... damned stupid law in a PC gone mad nation.
I moved on... it was a few decades ago now.

Its kind of like a subtle way of saying, "I am not the guy that they should have been messing with".
My question is, did you really go too far -- I mean with 4 people involved one's life is literally at stake...
I have asked myself that ever since. The thing is, had I done nothing, and taken the beating, then THEY would have done prison time... they were charged with assault and they were called cowards by the Judge, 4 on 1, they were... I fought back.... but here is what I think many decades later....
You're minding your own business when your'e attacked by four guys who tell you a certain employer doesn't like my stirring his workers up... so, you start fighting... you wonder just how far they will do to make their fight, break my legs? Kill me? So.... I fight harder... the guy in question punched me in the stomach, in those days, my stomach was rock hard if I tensed it up, I punched him in the stomach and he doubled over, I then gave him a hay maker... as his head was going down from being winded, it met my fist going up ... he went down hard and hit his head badly... a few punches later and the Police arrived... he was taken to hospital, they said I had started the fight but witnesses said otherwise. At the time, I thought I was fighting for my life... I told the Judge that as well... made no difference. According to the Judge, defending my was fine, but I went too far....
how the HELL can you tell when you're attacked by four guys wanting to punch the crap out of you... I defended myself to the best of my ability... I didn't go too far... I didn't go far enough, I should have put all four in hospital.
Anyhow.... as I said, its a badge of honor. I wear it with pride. But never again, not with all that is going on for me health wise.

I must confess, I’m addicted to this,
Shove your kiss straight through my chest,

Make me feel like a god, music, love, and sex,
Chaos Royale by Sister Sin (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CDjOlhqWuy0)
I´ll put an end to all music that sucks,

No hipster ****, radio rock, bubblegum DJ pop,
Heavy metal all of the way, make no ****ing mistake,

The Dress by Blonde Redhead (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pT7mIQntjZU)
Tears you see on my face, you do have something to do with,

Your love waits you while you're cheating,
Lightning strikes you when you're moving,
Pathetic by Khoiba (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GqYMD1k7DTs)
I feel my soul inside your tears,
Now can't you see I do mind?
And what I feel, is what you need,
Don't turn around,
the music that makes [you] cry
Yearbook by Hanson (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1bdY3Zm2Nl4)

Yeah, whatever... lets call it what it is, music. Fighting about genres of music is like racism.... do you like the Japanese better than the Chinese?

Yeah yeah, you can say that of just about any artist whose work strives to make a political statement. I might as well say that, if Masaki Kobayashi really wanted to oppose war, he shouldn't have filmed nine hours of Tatsuya Nakadai pretending to be a soldier.

The Human Condition is a masterpiece and a work of art. Don't compare it to a music genre whose biggest achievement is sampling Ashes are Burning.

Defending the idea that lyrics CAN be a meaningful form of social protest like other works of art is quite different than saying most of them are. Sometimes they're just ugly and vulgar and serve no purpose other than self-aggrandizement, usually through generalizing negatively about others.
I'm not really sure how people propose to slot this stuff into some kind of reasonable progressive worldview, unless that worldview has variable principles that can be amplified (or suspended completely) based on some kind of demographic hierarchy.

Anti-rap points of view are so ridiculous. It's bizarre how these people who don't listen to hip hop can sum up a whole genre with a single sentence. I guess all hip hop is the same.

Honestly it depends on the mood I am in what kind of music I listen to. Most of the time I listen to Rock, early 2000s to todays. IE: https://youtu.be/WNTjrsLOuHo

It really isn't. <3 And I still consider myself a beginner.
I quite like Cuban Hip Hop. Orishas is lovely, reminds me of my travels walking through the muddy roadways beside the seashore, exotic cocktails, and equatorial downpours walking home at 4am.

I think a lot of the ugly, vulgar lyrics in rap music come from angry, young black men who probably have a right to feel angry about some of the things they've seen growing up in this country. A lot of the songs in hip hop are allegories about either people they knew or fictionalized versions of themselves trying to make it in/out of the streets they grew up in. It would feel very silly if this depiction wasn't ugly and vulgar, it wouldn't feel like the truth. I also think there is a weird double standard that music isn't supposed to be vulgar, but it's okay for films to be vulgar.

Pretty hard to discuss this meaningfully without specifics. But I'll certainly agree that any description of ugly and vulgar events are necessarily going to sound ugly and vulgar, and I wouldn't hold that against anyone.
But I'm not talking about someone who sees their best friend get shot and drops an f-bomb in a song about it, or whatever. I'm thinking more of things like rampant misogyny. I'm not sure how to square that with the idea of songs-as-allegories, and I'm sure we can both come up with a number of prominent examples where it pretty clearly isn't.
I also think there is a weird double standard that music isn't supposed to be vulgar, but it's okay for films to be vulgar.
I think films get criticized for being ugly or vulgar all the time. Tarantino gets criticized for reveling in gore, people complain about "torture porn" and talk about how degrading gross-out comedies are, etc.

Very well said. How did you get so wise!
And just because one person finds a certain art genre vulgar does not make it acceptable to condescend to those who enjoy it. I will never understand why some people do this. All subcultures have their place is my view. Bring it on.

I feel that death metal and rap are some how united in a weird kind of way. Not in content, but from point of departure, there's something similar in how it all manifests.

There is definitely a lot of hip hop that is disrespectful towards women. I've heard some rappers defend it by saying they aren't talking about all women, but then I've heard in songs that "all women are hoes and bitches" from different artists. So clearly, there is that aspect of hip hop that won't be for a lot of people. But the cool thing about broad genres is what you might find in one subsection of a genre, you might not find in all of it. So, when discussing hip hop, there is also a ton of hip hop that is not disrespectful towards women. Also, most of those dudes who talk sh*t about women talk sh*t about everybody other than their closest friends. There is also a bunch of female emcees that talk sh*t about dudes, and it's often hilarious. But the problem with even having this discussion is I want to talk about the positives, and you want to talk about the negatives. We won't even be talking about the same songs most of the time.

That's true. But those feel like pretty niche examples (other than Tarantino, but he is one dude that gets it way more than any other director it seems like), whereas hip hop gets it a lot more often and from more angles. But that could just be my perception playing tricks on me, admittedly.

This is true and why there has been a shift by hip hop artists like Orishas with singers like Roldan and others campaigning against such blatant misogyny. I actually dont listen to lyrics but prefer to be captured by the instruments so I have no idea if this is still moving since the band members parted ways (amicably)
Whats wrong with ugly and vulgar in art?

I couldn't care less about misogyny. I don't really care about lyrics either, but I have reached level of English proficiency that doesn't let me not hear what they're saying when listening to actively, so that's often an additional cause of disgust (or laugh - Lil B's lyrics are so stupid, they sometimes make me giggle, hence an additional full star to the 0.5/5 his mixtapes deserve). I mostly dislike hip-hop for the way it sounds. That is, its reliance on boring, unoriginal beats and samples. I'm not saying all hip-hop music is like that. A big part of it is, though. I like Killer Mike, CunninLynguists, and Kno for what it's worth.

We're mostly on the same page here, then. There was push back on the generalizations about hip hop, and I'm basically just disputing the inverse implication that there aren't any problems here. I think what happens is people feel that, if a statement lacks nuance, that gives them some kind of license to exhibit a similar lack of nuance in their disagreement.
I also suspect there are some unaddressed disputes underpinning all this about when and why it's okay to make generalized statements.
That's true. But those feel like pretty niche examples (other than Tarantino, but he is one dude that gets it way more than any other director it seems like), whereas hip hop gets it a lot more often and from more angles.
You may be right; I'd probably bow to your superior knowledge on that front.

I'd still say the allegory in question has to acknowledge certain objectionable aspects of the text (and by extension reality) in order to work, especially when it comes to systems like labour camps or military bureaucracy grinding down human beings both physically and spiritually no matter their station. That doesn't strike me as being particularly different from rappers going off about issues like police brutality or the prison-industrial complex as obstacles to (predominantly) black people's ability to self-actualise as human beings (there's your human condition right there), hence why I question complaints about lyrics being disrespectful when the subjects don't necessarily deserve respect in the first place. It's one thing if it's just a matter of personal taste - I certainly can't tell you to like rap if you simply don't like how it sounds or whatever - but I do think you should reconsider why you've made the generalisations that you have.
One other thing, since your first post said that you hate "most rap", what are the exceptions?
This is the thread we can hate rap? Here are my reasons.
1) Lyrics are important to me. Majority of rap (I've heard) is about topics I don't find interesting: money, drugs, glorification of gangsta life style, bitches and bloated egos.
2) The actual music is almost always very, very bland. Just a simple beat repeating in the background, nothing that gets my interest (except occasional chorus that's just a sample from some other, better song).
3) "Singing" in rap especially these days is very dull and monotonous (this seems to be even worse problem with non-English rap). Also rapping pretty effectively ignores all other vocal skills except rhythm so there's nothing to salvage the boring recital.
That's about it.

Instead of remarking on how the same complaints get levelled against rap again and again in this thread without significant variation, I'm just going to remark on how similar they sound to the reasons why rock sucks.

Sounds like you stopped listening to rap in like 1993. I will note that the age old complaint of "it all sounds the same" is something that Ive noticed gets leveled at every type of music by people who dont listen to that type of music. Im not big on rap myself but Ive come to appreciate the art in pretty much every type of genre. Theres garbage everywhere and theres gold everywhere also. Even if you dont like it.

People in favor of rap must've missed years of struggle to get mad RYM cred and recognition.
Doom metal, noise, drone, techno can also be said to sound the same but these are LEGIT genres.
Rap isn't and will never be LEGIT.
Ask any elitist.
