Apparently, he has been found unconscious & in full cardiac arrest. I feel a migraine coming on with all this bad news.

...........
66 is still pretty young. Was he a substance abuser?
Vale.

Oh, damn. He's been my favorite musician since I was a kid. 1989's Full Moon Fever was the first album I owned from any artist. I've got all his albums and have seen him in concert multiple times. 66 is far too young.
:(
No more Wilbury's, please. Spare the rest.

Just read the Wiki page on him. No mention of drugs.
Interesting to read that seeing The Beatles for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show made him want to join a band. Amazing how many rock stars have said that.

I just read he’s dead.
Stirchley’s post implied he was still alive, but others are saying R.I.P.

He died about an hour ago. When I posted my OP, the news was only that he was in cardiac arrest. Next time I came to this thread he had just died.

He was on life support so you were right.

I just read that the LAPD apologizes, and that he's still clinging on to life.... Let's hope.

His Wikipedia page has gone from dead, to alive, to dead again. It’s now on dead.

Just read the Wiki page on him. No mention of drugs.
He was a wild child. The book "Dirt" recounts his times on the Road with Motley Crue and Ozzy Ozzbourne. They hoovered up drugs and booze. It's one of the best books I've ever read. Personally I think the lyrics of "Learning to Fly" are about getting high:
I'm learning to fly, around the clouds
But what goes up (learning to fly) must come down
I'm learning to fly (learning to fly), but I ain't got wings
Coming down is the hardest thing
This is terrible news. He's written so many great ones. My favourite......... What a beautiful song:

Wildflowers is very pretty.
Room at the Top is probably my favorite, though there are so many greats it's hard to say for sure.

Southern Accents is another long time favorite.

Saw him 3 times. Along with Springsteen, he was mainstream American rock to me, and my favourite track will always be this:

Then there was Full Moon Fever, which was kind of a perfect album.

Great choices, Tatty.
I was fortunate enough to see him four times in concert. I wish it could've been more.

Petty was one of my all time favorite rock singers. 66 years old, still way to young to go. This has been a terrible year for singers and musicians.

Requiescat In Pace. Tom
A brilliant writer and a great guy. Yesterday was truly a terrible day...
Maybe somewhere down the road aways (end of the line)
You'll think of me, wonder where I am these days (end of the line)

Sad that Tom's death has been overshadowed by that miserable **** in Vegas who shot up a festival and killed or injured about 600 people.
A true rock legend.
There's a huge list of Tom Petty songs I love. Here are just a few of my favorites:
