View Full Version : Random Acts Of Kindness Towards Sick/Injured Animals.
I thought it would be nice to share stories of helping animals that you came across in need of help, maybe while out walking or a neighbours pet.
I've helped a few animals while i've been out and about, one being a hedgehog that had its head wedged inside an ice cream box, it was walking on a grass verge and about to step into the road, i jumped off my bike and with one tug pulled off the ice- cream box, it came away and the hedgehog had ice-cream over his face😊. Also being a Medical Professional i am often asked by elderly neighbours to have a look at their cat or dog, i will share these stories a bit futher on.

I used to stop often at a bridge near where I lived to help turtles get across before being run over. I stop my car, get out and lift them up and put them on the grass on the opposite side of the road.
After hurricane Sandy I found a crippled cat in my backyard. It couldn't use it's back legs. If people recall, later in the week after the storm it got extremely cold. I tried to approach the cat to put a blanket on it, but it was terrified and crawled away with its front paws. I called animal control on my dying cell phone (no way to charge it since the power was out) and a guy came and got the cat.
Not sick or injured but I've rescued a couple of lost dogs.

I've very bravely rescued a few birds and mice from the jaws of some ferocious looking animals (namely our cats PF & Ossie) with absolutely no thought of any possible danger to myself :yup:
I rescued a mouse from a cat on a Halloween night, the cat was knocking it about, then the mouse lay on its back playing dead, i just stamped my foot on the ground and the cat ran off, then the mouse sprang up and ran for its life☺

I rescued a drowning spider in my bathroom :D
Took it out of the water and put it to safe (so it can continue to weave troublesome net all over my room).
There was a spider in my bedroom recently, it was sat on top of freshly ironed clothes, i'd never harm them but i am scared of them and i wouldn't retrieve my ironed clothes until i knew it had moved on, about 6 hours later! 😆

Oh yuck spiders. Not scared of them but don't want them in my house. Is there a country in the world that doesn't have spiders? They may not be poisonous but they are annoying. Apparently, they are no snakes in Ireland.
BTW, does anyone know what this is? Found on a Texan beach after the hurricane:

Truth be told, I'm actually proper arachnophobic. It's like they knew, because nobody else I know has had as many big hairy spider encounters as I. I was once staring up at the knotty pine ceiling of my living room, thinking how easy it would be for a spider to camouflage itself, when the knot I was looking at (directly above my head) moved. Yup. Big hairy spider. AGSDHJAGHSDJA!!!
The movie Arachnophobia actually works on me. My flesh crawls at that shower scene. Seriously!

Wow not seen anything like it before! 😳
I used to live in Cheshire with my husband, it's all countryside and farms. One day a field mouse ran across our kitchen floor, tiny little thing it was, another time i saw it in my dogs food bowl, so knew it wouldn't be long before my dog got hold of it, we went and bought a Humane Trap (a clear box that once inside a rodent can't get out, doesn't cause injury) and i placed a nice big chunk of cheese inside for mousey to nibble on while trapped, anyway a day later there was mousey inside the box, minus the cheese😁 we released him in a nice big field!

I do that with house flies... Whenever I see a fly in the house that looks like it's dying I put some water/sugar solution on my hand and they seem to eat/drink it and then gain enough energy for me to put them outside and they fly off and die out in nature instead...
I love animals so I'll always help an animal if I can. Even little house flies. :D
As for spiders, I pick them up if they are in a place where they might get killed by humans or on my bedroom ceiling when I'm off to bed(I don't like the thought of them possibly dropping on me) and move them into another room. We apparently don't have any deadly ones here in the UK but we do have ones that have quite a nasty bite and probably find them more down south of the country.

That's great. My favourite was a clip from a few years ago in Australia. Obviously during sweltering temperatures someone had laid out a basin full of water for a koala to sit in to cool off. I think he was adding water or even giving the koala a drink and saying "There you go mate" :p.

BTW, that picture of the weird carcass that washed up in Texas is apparently some kind of eel that lives in the deep ocean. Must have been washed ashore by the hurricane. Horrible looking thing....😱

I saved a spider today. It was in my car and so small that it was nearly invisible. I only seen it as it was hanging by a thread from the roof. So I caught the thread up in my hand and walked the spider over to a fence post. There he touched down and continued on his way.

Kind of a similar story: last week I found this huge spider web attached to my back door. (Why do they build webs in the most high-traffic areas?)
Just to open the door I had to destroy the web. So I got a walking stick I had by the door and at first was glad because the ginormous spider in the web hopped right on it. But then he started running up the stick right toward my hand, so I panicked a little and turned the stick around, switching hands, but he reaches the end, loops over it and is now running toward my hand the stick is in again - and he's running like the Flash - it only took him about 2 seconds to run the length of a 5 foot stick. The whole time, I was moving toward a couple small trees and deposited the stick & spider at their base. (Then ran away like a little girl!)

Yeah I love them too. This is the third GS we've had. First on was very fierce and we had to give him away. The second one is a total sweetheart but scares people to death with his huge fangs, lol. No one enters my garden without my allowing them in. Then he turns into man's best friend. I also had a black Lab - very friendly and would eat anything - used to steal chickens and packs of butter off the kitchen counters. Needless to say, he became quite fat.
Re the eel - I guess it is. They say it lives deep in the ocean which might account for the no eyes. Dark down there....
I had a black Labrador, he lived to be 16,he was going blind and lost a lot of weight so had to make that dreaded decision which is a blessing when the time comes. I often check a dog or a cat for a neighbour, even though they know i'm not medically qualified with animals they still ask so i oblige, especially for elderly people as their pets are their only companion if they live alone. The latest was an elderly dog who kept trying to chew something in his empty mouth, i opened his mouth and saw straight away the little fella had a piece of biscuit jammed in a gap between 2 teeth, he had been trying to dislodge it himself, it was still hard as his saliva hadn't softened it, so i reached in with my little finger and pushed it out then removed it. The old lady was nearly crying with relief😊

I had a Boxer that stole a cooked chicken from a neighbours kitchen, i blamed the neighbour for leaving it unattended in a kitchen with the door open! Haha. I did replace it though but not in time for their dinner that evening😁
Another time i was asked to look at a dogs paw, it was slightly bleeding and the dog wouldn't put any weight on it, i checked and saw one of his claws was missing, the fleshy part was bleeding, i mixed salt in warm water and had the dog step into it while i cleaned it up, then put one of my own trainer socks on his paw to keep it clean, the claw grew back and the dog bought me a box of chocs!

I love reading all these posts, i love animals, and although i don't like spiders or bugs they are all gods creatures and deserve to live. We have Dragon Flies here, or as kids call them Daddy Long Legs, i used to be terrified of them as a child cos they make a scratching sound as they skim the wall when they fly, but now when i have one at home it can stay until it flies away through my open window😁

There was a spider in my bedroom recently, it was sat on top of freshly ironed clothes, i'd never harm them but i am scared of them and i wouldn't retrieve my ironed clothes until i knew it had moved on, about 6 hours later! 😆
It's easy to catch a spider & put it outside. I do it all the time. Take a small glass & a piece of paper towel. Quickly & gently scoop up the spider & cover it. Take outside & release. Spider bites are painful; otherwise I would leave them inside.
I used to live in Cheshire with my husband, it's all countryside and farms. One day a field mouse ran across our kitchen floor, tiny little thing it was
Earlier this month my cats found a tiny mouse in the house, which they were batting around. Easily caught it & put it outside.

They're anything but cute. On a safari in Africa they were the animals that scared me the most -- they are beyond HUGE. We came upon a small herd where one of the males had a gored shoulder. It looked swollen and infected. Sadly, the rangers said he would eventually die -- they don't interfere with wounded animals -- they neither kill nor help them, just let nature take it's course. It was a wonderful experience though to see the animals in their natural habitat. Put me off zoos for life.

What do you guys do with mosquitoes? Blow them gently away? What about fleas? Cockroaches? Head lice? As far as I'm concerned, insects aren't animals. Anything that has the temerity to think it can share my house or take a bite out of me, gets blown away asap. That includes rats...yuck!

Where did I say that elephants are "cute". People need to respect their weight & size. Saw on a TV show an unfenced elephant to which you could feed bananas. Yes, its keeper was close by, but one guy let his small son give the elephant the bananas. Insanity! One swipe of its trunk could have killed the boy. People are so dumb.
Zoos are not ideal, but if a zoo can protect & breed an endangered animal, that's fine with me. Experts are saying that at the current rate, elephants could be extinct in 10 years.

Being a driver, I've led many a dog home after wandering into the street. Only one time did I see one get hit, a little fella jogging across the street following another dog. Thankfully, it was a very small car that hit him. It was a very busy street so I blocked it with the truck and jumped out and scooped him up. A woman also pulled over and pointed out to me that there was an animal hospital only a couple doors down. I brought him in hoping for the best. I went back about an hour later and I was so happy to hear that he was going to make it. The owners were there by then and didn't say a word to me. They probably thought that it was me who hit him.
I've tamed a couple of feral cats and found them homes. I'm still trying to catch the young girl I've been feeding for the last month. She'll be getting her shots and getting fixed soon enough.
I was watering one of my hanging plants earlier in the summer when I was startled by something falling in the mulch. It turned out there was a nest in there with three chicks not ready to fly. I scooped up the little bastard and put him back.

Where did I say anything was wrong with zoos? The only thing I meant was once you've seen animals in the wild, zoos are tame, boring and unexciting.
You've told us this before. Sometimes you post simply to get a reaction. Silly.
Glad you can read my mind and know exactly what I mean to do. You do seem to presume an awful lot. Byee...

Byee...
You'll be back. :)

That's happened when i had a garden, baby chicks falling out of their nest, one chick had no feathers so was very young, i picked him up and put him back in the nest, think it was a blue tit cos an adult blue tit was nearby.
This story is upsetting but does have a happy ending☺.
Watching TV one night with husband we heard a commotion in the street, thought we'd better see what was going on incase i was needed professionally, we went out and a guy running past us said he needed wire cutters cos a small dog was trapped by its paw on a fence, husband ran back inside for his toolbox and i ran to the crowd of people who where by a wire fence, the dog had tried to jump this fence but being a small dog his paw got caught in the gaps and he was hung upside down, 2 guys were holding the dog up so he wasn't just dangling down, husband ran out with the toolbox and had bolt cutters and cut the dog free, he was placed down and apart from beeing a little dazed he was fine☺ his owner was in tears. That night about 10 people rescued a little dog and it was the talk of the village for months.

My dog kills birds that fall out of the nest. I don't know where they come from because I don't have any trees in my yard. The roof maybe?

Maybe had a little nest up on the roof somewhere. I've seen a seagulls nest from a hotel window on a roof,it was on the opposite hotel and i could see the grey fluffy chicks walking about on the roof, their mum sat there watching them. It was great watching them.
Oldest kid found a newborn kitten under our deck once. it looked in rough shape. had been abandoned by the mother and the rest of the litter. was clearly the runt. could barely walk. it seemed to have a problem with its leg. i figured it was a developmental issue and wouldnt last the night so i said oh sure you can keep it figuring we could at least make its last few hours comfortable then bury it in the back. a week later it was tearing around the house like a missile. climbing on things and knocking them down. still have it today ten years later and its the fastest cat ive ever seen. shows how poor my medical diagnoses are...
i also keep bees. not really a rescue story but the more we do to save colonies from various issues plaguing them these days the better. and theres something about colony animals that i find really intriguing. neighbors think im nuts though out there in my big white suit surrounded by a cloud of bees...

Truly not worth a mention, but couple of months ago I noticed a small baby bird shivering and standing motionless in the corner of the veranda. It apparently fell from a rooftop's nest, but was too little and weak to fly away. Because local cats could've easily slaughter it, I decided to catch it and have it rest in the house. I placed the bird in the small shallow bowl and gave it some water and seeds. I let her rest for day and half and than put her back in the nest from where I very likely witnessed its first flight !

It's a lovely cat. I don't have much experience with cats, i did check one over for an elderly woman when she said her cat felt hot, i told her his ears looked a bit wet inside and it could have an ear infection, she got her daughter to take the cat to the vet and it had an ear infection and was put on medication. How long did it take to catch the cat Cricket?

I've only ever seen one person suited up tending to his bees. Do your bees produce honey? What's the role of the queen bee?

oh yes. more honey then I know what to do with which is why my second hobby is making mead. :D Its amazing the variation in taste the honey has depending on the flowers around where the hive is located. Believe it or not Avocado flowers make for some really good honey.
The queen is there to breed and make lots and lots of baby bees. you usually get a few seasons out of the queen (my current one is named "Dorothy"). A new one will be born once the old one is on its last legs generally or sometimes earlier on and the new one dispenses with the current queen and takes over. Only difference between the queens and the drones and the workers is how much royal jelly they get fed while a larva. otherwise they are all born the same.

I've had the trap about a month but this was the 1st time she went all the way in. The lady picked her up a short time ago. They will decide if she is fit for adoption. If not, she will be returned to us with an outdoor heated cathouse.

I keep meaning to say that when i've helped to give a cat or a dog medication i find it a good idea to apply a bit of butter on a tablet then place inside the animals mouth, chances are they like the taste and chew it, plus with it having a bit of butter on it should go down easily😊

Hope you have better luck than us. We got a sick puppy. She was infested with a parasite - she had to spend a night at the vet with a drip she became so thin and dehydrated. She still hasn't recovered her normal weight though I'm feeding her 3 times a day. Not only that, my older dog got sick too with the same problem. Cost a pretty penny in vet fees!
Be careful about sending pictures from your phone or tablet. Apparently, they can be traced back to you. Not sure how it's done but someone warned about this some time back. Just saying....

Ahhhh i bet you wouldn't be without either of them now, a dog definitely completes a family!😊. Lulu is 5 months old, when i first saw her she lay on her back and i was tickling her pink belly, i thought if she thinks i'm doing this all the time she's right! Haha. Lovable little dog she is. So why would a cute puppy be in a re-homing center? I presumed that you had bought Lulu from a breeder or pet store. Here in America it would be unusual to see a puppy at the pound or shelter.

The people who had Lulu decided they no longer wanted her, don't know why, she's a beauty, she was in the Dogs Trust for about 3wks. Losing a pet is like losing family, losing my last dog was as bad as losing my husband. Harry looks adorable, such a shame when a pet dies at a young age.

So glad you have rescued a puppy. Nutty people across the street (who look like they have no money at all) drove all the way to Pennsylvania to buy a Husky puppy for $600. Lovely dog, but 4,000 cats/dogs are euthanized daily in America.

That is way too many. All of my dogs have been rescue dogs. I've also taken live fish in too, a friend of husbands had a centre for rescued fish and every so often he'd ask us could we take one in, we had a coldwater tank and an aquarium at the time.

The number is greatly reduced now. It used to be much higher. Some states now have no-kill shelters and, hopefully, all of America will too eventually. In my city, if a stray dog is impounded he will be euthanized within 9 days or so if unclaimed.

I was greeted by Lulu with a sloppy wet kiss after work! 😁. She slept quite well on her first night here. One of my fave TV programmes is Wildlife SOS, the staff at the centre treat anything from Deer to Hedgehogs,an injured Squirrel was taken in once but cos they are classed as vermin here it was unable to be released back into the wild, so when the staff treated him they then kept him at the centre as their Mascot. Happy Ending! 😊

My husband used to love fishing, he belonged to a club and would have matches. Sometimes i'd drive out to their location and stay for a night. He told me that sometimes a fox would appear by their bivvies looking for food, they would feed it whatever they had. Also he told me that they would often rescue pigeons, they would swoop down onto the water looking for bits of bait, but would have difficulties tryna take off with wet wings, so many times the anglers would scoop the pigeons out of the water with their landing nets and then set them down on the banks, where they toddled off flapping their wings to dry off.

That baby elephant is adorable! I've only ever been to the zoo once, it was Chester Zoo, i was amazed at how big a fully grown elephant is, also the giraffes, i was about 10 at the time. I'm not a big fan of zoos but do understand the breeding side of them.
When i was at school our caretaker would make hedgehog boxes, made from wood with an entrance for the hedgehog to enter/exit, then line them with shredded paper or straw, then place them around the school field, ideally deep within bushes and shrubs, the hedgehogs would hibernate in them.
Another fave programme of mine was Animal Hospital, shame that it was hosted by Rolf Harris though. I also like Send In The Dogs, it's about working dogs in our Seaports and Airports, and there's one about police dogs, can't think what it was called, but there wasn't a dry eye in my house when a young police dog died of ill health. The lady handler was devastated, but in time she got a new dog to train up as her partner😊
Lulu is settling in really well, she mauls me when i walk in after not seeing me for a while, and she pulls my hair, my previous dogs did this too, and my brothers dog! She loves sitting on my lap, she's like a big baby😁

Zoos are not ideal, but they are necessary if we are to prevent the extinction of certain animals. Experts predict that with the current rate of elephant poaching, there will be no elephants in another decade.

Lulu had a little piece of pizza, judging by her face she didn't like it! Haha. She had a little taste of gravy off my finger the other night, she likes that, and mum gave her a spoonful of mashed potato, she lapped it up. I heard a few months ago that a UK soldier died from injuries he sustained while on duty, also his service dog died a few hours after him because of injuries, both received military honours at their funerals, i could be wrong but i think the dog received a posthumous award equivalent to the Victoria Cross, it's an award given to service dogs by an animal organisation.
I hate ivory poaching, one of the worst acts of cruelty ever.
I took Lulu around the docks for a walk earlier, she loved it, a group of tourists made a fuss of her. She had a night at my place with me last night, think she prefers mums place cos it's bigger and she goes exploring the rooms, plus mum spoils her😊.
Was chatting to a neighbour earlier and stroking his staffy, he said the owner of the staffy died and the staffy was facing being put down as no one wanted her with her being 12, so he said he'd take her in til they found a new owner, then he saw her jump onto his settee and have a nap, that was 4 months ago and he can't part with her now😊
Another time i helped a neighbours pet was when her dog had a tic, she didn't know what it was but i'd seen one before on my own dog which i'd successfully removed myself, i won't say how i did it cos it can be dangerous to remove them yourself, i told my neighbour though and she asked me to do the same with her dog, so i did and successfully removed that one too. I've only ever seen 2 tics now, when Lulu is a bit older i'll either get her a flea & tic collar or something my vet recommends😊

Mainly for tourism, the Clipper Boat recently left from Albert Dock for the race, i went down to watch it, it was great fun. I went to watch a few years ago as the boat returned after the race and i somehow found myself in a marquee that was holding a party for the crew.😊

On the level, we never had Possums in the northwest of America, until the last few decades. They either migrated here, or were brought here, now they are everywhere.
For Danni...a Possum without his raincoat:p

Ahhhhhh that's so cute! 😍. I've never seen a possom here, i thought they were in Australia with spooky! And yes i'm confused!! 😆. Haha. There was another hedgehog in mums garden last night, they seem to have a favourite spot near a wall, maybe they eat the little bugs that crawl on the wall.

The photos of opossums look cute, but I find them slightly creepy. We have them in our backyard & I see them on my daily walk through various parks, etc. I see a lot of dark brown ones too. Of course, they do not bother anyone & play dead when they see a human nearby.
There was a photo on a website that showed a family of baby possums + mom in a woman's closet. She had no idea they were there. Ugh, I would have freaked.

Danni, Nope, they don't live in Australia, there in north and central Americas. But they are Marsupialia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsupial) like Kangaroos.

I know what you mean, as much as i love the squirrels here i am scared of them, they kinda stand infront of you in a stance, before they or i run off! I once heard about a woman being bitten by one so i'm very wary of them. However i usually throw a handful of monkey nuts in the park for them, it's so cute the way they sit and hold a monkey nut between their front legs and break the shell😊
Just been mauled again by Lulu😁 she can jump onto the settee now and then she throws herself at me, then sits on my lap while i stroke her, we call her Baby Lulu now which is so cute.
Will ask spooky today to post a pic of Lulu😊

Oh no i can't believe you said that, now i have an image...! Hahaha! 😁
I think it's my long hair that Lulu doesn't like, when i have it up she's fine but when i have it down she growls and grabs it and rags it. Think i'll wear it up now whenever she's with me! 😊
Lulu has been digging up mums vegetable patch in her garden, i've attempted to tidy it up, hope she doesn't notice! Lulu was filthy so gave her a bath, she enjoyed it, this little dog is an absolute joy, she's keeping us on our toes with her energy, never stops wagging her tail. I wear my hair up and she approves! 🐶

So glad she is working out for you guys. You’ve told us a few times that you are a neatnik (I am too), so I was a little worried that you would dislike Lulu messing up your place.

Lulu can make as much mess as she likes, she's bringing joy to us, she still sleeps on a folded up jumper instead of her bed, i removed the buttons from it first. Mum saw the state of her vegetable patch, even after i'd tidied it up, she just laughed and said 'bloody Lulu'😁

Ever considered a kitten Dannii? Shelters are full of homeless babies. You have Lulu now, I know, but cats are very easy to have at home.

I would bet a million bucks that her cat is an unfixed male. That’s why he roams & is an accident waiting to happen. In most circumstances, cats should be kept inside. In fact, you cannot adopt a cat from an American shelter unless you agree not to let it outside. My Kandy & Looby Loo never go outside.

One of the last goldfish i had tried to commit suicide, seriously! The fish tank i had had a light bulb in the lid, so to prevent condensation going onto the bulb i had a plastic tray between the water and the bulb, one evening i was watching TV and i heard a flapping sound coming from the fish tank, i went over and took the lid off and there was a goldfish flapping about on the plastic tray after jumping out of the water, i popped him back into the water and reduced the water level, good job i was at home that evening.

Found as a kitten in someone’s backyard one town over. Cannot imagine her life if she hadn’t been found. Her first day here I spent 2 hours looking for her in the small room I put her in. Finally realized she had wedged herself under the false bottom of a bookcase. She then spent the next week cowering under our bed.

My kitten, Harry, was born in my house. I fostered his mother & I was there when she birthed Harry & his sisters. So amazing. As I told everyone, it’s incredible to think a female cat births outside. How she manages to leave her babies to look for food is beyond me. Harry & his sisters would maniacally cry if she left them for a second. I can’t imagine how a female cat survives the stress of birthing & then protecting her babies from predators.

I didn’t explain myself properly. I meant stray cats give birth outside since they have no home. After seeing the procedure & what is actually involved in taking care of kittens, it amazes me that a cat can do this outside with all its inherent dangers.

When i pulled up at work this morning i heard an owl, that's the first time i've heard an owl, it was so clear and quite close by. A few months ago in the same area i saw an eagle, it was sat on a tree branch flexing his huge wings, my first thought was it could be an escaped pet, but it wasn't ringed, i did see the huge talons and i couldn't get into work quick enough!
There's a case on our news about a guy who went fishing with his mates, this guy caught a fish and held it up to kiss it, the fish was slippery and slid out of his hand and got wedged in his throat, he panicked and past out, and went into cardiac arrest, his mates had to perforn CPR til paramedics arrived and took over, he's has made a full recovery but is still traumatised.

This reminds me of an item I read in the "Dumbth News" in Skeptic Magazine several years ago: A guy liked to go out on his porch at night and hoot at the owls, who would hoot back at him. One day his wife was chatting with the neighbor and mentioned the owl thing. The neighbor said something like: "Really? My husband does the same thing!" Don't know if there were ever any real owls involved, but the first guy was quoted as saying: "I felt such a twit when I found out." :yup:A few months ago in the same area i saw an eagle, it was sat on a tree branch flexing his huge wings, my first thought was it could be an escaped pet, but it wasn't ringed, i did see the huge talons and i couldn't get into work quick enough! No danger there, Dannii, unless of course you resemble your avatar! :D

I remember during my clinical externship, a woman brought in a Shih Tzu that had belonged to an elderly friend who had just died. The family thought the dog was sick and didn't really want to deal with it, so they were going to have her euthanized, but this friend of the family asked if she could take it in just to see if there was anything to be done.
The dog turned out to have urolithiasis -- her very tight bladder felt like it was packed with pebbles, which you could feel (and practically hear) grinding together. The woman took the dog home to discuss the situation with the family. I had the feeling they would opt for euthanasia, and I tried to shove it out of my mind.
I went in a couple of days later and this dog's surgery was already in progress. The doc removed four quarter-stones -- imagine a medium-sized potato roughly broken into four pieces. (Mind you, this dog was no bigger than 15 lbs/7 kg soaking wet). She recovered well and perked right up (understandably!). The family friend who brought her in paid for the surgery and adopted the dog, and apparently she quickly and happily settled into her new home.

That is such a lovely story. It's a shame when a pet faces euthanasia when their owner dies. Similar story with my dad, his friend died and the family didn't wanna take care of his dog, which had a bad leg after being hit by a car, he had a limp and was on painkillers but apart from that he was a happy healthy dog, my dad took him in for a few days til the family decided what to do, then my dad couldn't part with him so he kept him, they became inseparable and would be seen out walking, one limping with a bad leg, the other limping on a walking stick with a bad back! 😊

I've already posted this elsewhere, but I think it's apropos:
In observance of National (USA) Animal Abuse Awareness Month (from her clinic's website):
APRIL Pet of the Month- Lily
Before we tell Lily's story, we first want to advise anyone who may be reading this that April is Animal Abuse Awareness Month and one of the photos below is graphic and may be disturbing. None the less, we feel Lily's story is one that needs to be told to make everyone aware of some of the atrocities that are done to innocent animals, and also to share how courageous Lily is. Regardless of how horribly she was repeatedly tortured, not once did it break her spirit.
Lily first came to see us in January 2015 weighing only 1.4 pounds with a broken tail. She was only ten weeks old. It was obvious her owner was very concerned about her and had no idea how this may have happened. It was thought she perhaps had gotten her tail caught in a door. Regardless of how it happened, her tail needed to be amputated. Her surgery went well.
Two weeks later she returned, this time with her face swollen and she was lethargic. Uncharacteristically for her, she wouldn't eat. Her owner said she had got stuck in a closet and we assumed she may have gotten into something that caused a reaction. We treated her as such and sent her home. Three days later, she presented with worsening facial swelling and additionally, her tail was injured again. Something didn't seem right about all of these unexplained injuries. She was sedated to begin treatment on her tail and we found scabs on her face, head, and torso. We were now puzzled as to what was going on with this kitten. Dr Folland examined her, and I can still hear his words pounding in my head-"This kitten has been scalded"! Who would have done such a thing? There seemed to be no question her owner loved her dearly, it couldn't be her.
It was about this time I received THE CALL! An elderly gentleman from Arizona just happened to call our hospital. He was on the hunt for the hospital that had been treating Lily. He was Lily's owner's father. He explained he had received a desperate call from his teenage grandson. Earlier that day the grandson heard Lily crying and went downstairs to see what was wrong. He witnessed his mother's fiance' holding Lily by the scruff of the neck, thumping her face with his finger, and she was soaking wet.
Dr Love, her attending doctor decided immediate action needed to be taken. Lily's owner was asked to come to the clinic to discussed Lily's condition. When confronted with our suspicions, she wondered if her fiance' was responsible for the injuries, because his mother's kitten, Lily's litter mate had similar injuries. We informed her we would need to report the incident to the authorities and asked her to relinquish Lily's ownership to our hospital. She reluctantly agreed her home was not a safe place for Lily or any other animal.
During the following months, Lily had numerous surgeries and painful treatments. Through all of this, she still purred and not once did she try to retaliate or bite anyone. Once she was nearly healed, we began a hunt to find her the perfect home. Almost three months from her initial injuries, Miss Lily went to her ideal and forever home. She now lives with her human mom and two feline siblings and is deeply loved. She races happily through her new and safe home. She has large areas on her back where the fur no longer grows and she has to wear a green "Onesie" to keep her from scratching where she has nerve damage from the burns. However, when she comes to visit us, she is still full of affection and has that bright sparkle shinning in her eyes!
Animal abuse is a real and all to common problem. Often the perpetrator also abuses children and others in the home. We all need to be aware of this and do all we can to prevent it. This is why for the month of April, there is no better candidate than Lily to be Parrish Creek's Pet of the Month. http://parrishcreekvet.com/sites/site-5878/images/Lily%20Bowman8.JPG

Reading about poor Lily being tortured absolutely sickened me, how somehow can harm an animal is beyond me. You're right about animal abusers going on to harm children, the two evil sods who turtured Liverpool child James Bulger had been torturing animals before they snatched the child. You do a great job BOP, as good as any doc, Lily is gorgeous, bet she looks ever so sweet in her onesie😍

God, I feel sick. To steal a line from Pulp Fiction, people like this should go straight to execution without trial.

And I love that he came out in better shape than the truck he hit.
What a gorgeous bird. Great that he's recovering well.👍👍.
I used to have a pair of cockatiels, they had a very large spacious cage but when they came out for me to clean the cage they were reluctant to go back inside, they were happy to sit together on top of a book cabinet whistling and singing, so i'd leave the cage door open and place their ladder from the book cabinet to the cage, they'd go back inside when they wanted too. The male died first, i found him in the cage dead, the female was in the corner of the cage quivering, she didn't last long after her mate died, i'll never forget the way they just sat on the cabinet together 😊

Oh. It's in the "Pets" thread. She's a ball python/royal python. She's about ten years old and about 1.2 meters long.

Why do you use meters? Didn’t know we were metric in America. :)
Lulu is house trained now, she sits by the back door when she wants to go into mums garden, and when she's at my place she sits by the inner door that leads to the front door, she learnt quite quickly, i've always said dogs are clean and do try to use the same place when they need to go. My nephews adore her and the eldest takes her jogging with him, so she's getting plenty of exercise, when they return she always has big gulps of water then jumps onto the settee and has a sleep.

I was answering Dannii's question. (She's not in America.) Anyway I think it's a good habit -- we all SHOULD be metric.

So we can at least look (if not actually be) less backward, compared to the rest of the world.

Nobody thinks America is backward. I like it that we haven’t gone metric. We’re individual.

Our cat Pixie died yesterday of old age. My husband searched for her all day & eventually found her in the woodpile in which she was born. She was our first kitten & later cat. It was always amusing to see how she had made my husband her devoted slave.

I know. I just told my boyfriend and he told me to look at Facebook. One of my best friend also lost her cat yesterday. Also a black cat (but young). I'm devastated for all 3 of you. :(

As I told Cricket, the loss of my 10 month old kitten last summer almost killed me. Literally. When the vet called to tell me he had died, the pain in my chest was so bad the vet told me to hang up & call him back. I am still devastated.
Pixie had a wonderful life & if only all our respective pets died like she did. She put her head down in her woodpile & went to heaven. I’m gonna cry now ....

Finally, 4 years later, this piece of garbage is going to trial. Why his ass was not deported back to Poland is beyond me. Illegally in the country & American tax dollars used to keep him here in jail.
Gruesome reading. BEWARE if you are not familiar with this case.
Ugh, his trial has been delayed until at least January due to “medical reasons”. Infuriating.

So sorry Stirchley, that's you and Cricket mourning your cats, so sad. I still think of Nuggy (my Labrador) i couldn't eat or sleep when i lost her, i couldn't even look at her fave biscuits in the supermarket.
Lulu has chewed through the strap on my new bag🙈 it only cost me 12 quid but i did like that bag, suppose i could get a new strap for it.

We thought the same thing. So many places in the yard, including other woodpiles, where she could have gone.

Sure he is, but those of us following this want him punished for what he did to that sweet dog. Immediate deportation would do it for me. The cruelty he inflicted on that dog - he deserves the highest punishment possible. She must have been terrified every time he came near her. Savage!

Take the bag to your local shoe repair. You’d be amazed what they can do.
