There was a hedgehog in mums garden again last night, it was trying to climb up a step to reach the wall where they seem to head for, i gave him a lift with the help of a dust pan and brush, it was so cute😊

Lulu has finally started to sleep in her own bed, apparently she didn't like its position, facing mums log burner, she likes it positioned near the kitchen door, she isn't allowed in the kitchen but she's happy to sit as near to it as she can😊

Read an interesting fact: female cats are mostly right-pawed & males are left-pawed. I can definitely see this with my Looby Loo.

No. I meant some of the images are unpleasant. One shot is of animals in testing labs. Don’t want to see that kind of thing since I can never dislodge it from my memory.

Some masochistic part of me wishes I were on the medical staff treating them. Hopefully most of them are physically and behaviorally fit to be adopted.

It seems a little unusual to see this with dogs. It doesn't seem to be a puppy mill as such, and most hoarding cases like this seem to involve cats, for some reason.

I'm surprised there weren't a lot more dead mothers and puppies (or I wonder where the bodies are buried). You know they weren't getting a proper growth diet, so all I can envision is epidemic eclampsia.

True. Probably because female cats can have a litter at 4 months & can have at least 2 litters annually. People start feeding a few cats & suddenly there’s a colony.

Feel depressed. Study window was open & I could hear a crying cat next door, which was drinking water out of our outdoor cats’ bowl. Seemed very agitated. Never seen it before & seemed v. young. Looked out of the study window & it was trying to follow a couple down the street. They had no interest in it. So I went outside to take a closer look at it, but in those few seconds it had disappeared.

Feel really bad now as it seemed rather impulsive & liable to run into traffic. It seemed very lost & thinking someone has dumped it.

lenslady
02-16-18, 08:37 PM
Try not to worry, cats have a way of fending for themselves and we can hope this one will- after all it found your water bowl, so it knows a safe place to go. Maybe leave some food out, if you haven' t done so already, and let's hope this cat comes back

Yoda, lenslady, Well, I got him & he is on his way to board at a vet center until room opens up at the shelter. At the vet center he will be neutered & given all the medical care he needs. (Everything will be paid for by me.) I found him yesterday & brought him to our backyard & he never left. Extremely intelligent & friendly. Very very hungry & very dirty. Got him easily into the pet carrier. If it turns out he is special needs in any way, he possibly will be returned to our backyard for me to take care of him. I don’t think I want him in a shelter if he has special needs as it will be hard to get him adopted. He loved it in our backyard & settled in very nicely.

So glad I accomplished this, but feel sad that the little guy has gone. :(

Yoda, Not sure if he ever had a home. What’s amazing to me is how trusting & intelligent he is. Found him across the street & indicated to him that we weren’t crossing until the cars went by. He stayed by my side. Then we crossed the street & entered my backyard. Most cats will not follow you onto an unknown property. He had even found his own sleeping spot in the yard overnight. I left the carrier outside & when I came back out to put him in it he was already inside looking out. Feel really good about what I did for an innocent animal. :)

My little man left the vet boarding yesterday & is now in the shelter after 2 weeks. Now he can socialize with the other kitties & the volunteers. He will go up for adoption every Saturday or stay in the shelter forever if nobody adopts him. He is 100% healthy, which is a great relief.

The bill is $400+, but it is worth it to have saved him from dangerous streets.

I’m always studying everything on the Kitten Lady’s website. Biggest fear has always been that I will find an orphaned kitten & not know how to save it with feeding, etc. I feel confident now that I can do this & I will buy everything needed & keep it handy just in case. Always wanted to bottlefeed a tiny kitten like this little guy.

If coyotes are shy creatures, they should be easy to scare off if they're on their own. Just make yourself big, loud and scary.

Took Kandy in this morning. Bus trip super-easy from my house, which stops right outside the vet hospital. Next town over, but took only 12 minutes or so. Had another consult with the vet & left Kandy there. Due back at 5.30. They called & said she’s doing well under anesthesia. Only a single tooth remained viable so I told them to remove that too. Bus stop for return trip is in a very cold windy spot so may take a cab home so Kandy doesn’t suffer. Will be prepped with pain reliever instructions. She cannot eat kibble for a week, which means Looby cannot either. Bill is going to be $3K+.

cricket . I don't know where you live, but unless you live on the flanks of the Rocky Mountains or the Texas plains ( by which I mean the free and wild wide open spaces ), this coyote shouldn't be a common sight. I would be very wary of confronting this coyote or trying to scare it away. Coyotes do not typically go into people's yards or approach people, it could be lost of course; but it could very well be rabid. Is there some sort of animal control agency in your area you could contact for help and information? I'd feel better if you didn't try to face this creature alone.

I'm in the Boston area, but I've always had plenty of wild animals visit my yard. A coyote was howling right in my driveway the other night. I just ran out and chased it away. I called animal control but I'm on my own unless one becomes aggressive.

cricket. Nowadays lots of creatures are 'invading ' suburban or country- town habitats (truth is, we've invaded theirs) .Well hopefully you keep a good distance between you and the critters and stay closer to your house than you are to the coyote. Or raccoons ( they seem to be everywhere lol, and are very adorable to look at, unless, as happened to my neighbor down the road, they decide to burrow a hole in your roof to nest their babies. Very adorable - until they came crashing thru his living room ceiling. Very good chewers apparently- well my neighbor sure kept his garbage pails secure from then on)

Well good luck to you cricket. Keep safe.

ah yes, poop. It always tells a story, criket!

I used to think dingoes would never go near a camp fire but that was until 'that dingo stole my baby' saga (RIP poor little innocent), and small humans were being attacked by them elsewhereon this giant island of sand.

Are your poochies locked inside at night, Cricket?I'm going to ASSume yes. Didnt Paris Hilton's little dog get taken by a coyote some time bac, about the same time a video of a young woman chasing after a bear that took off with her dachshund was doing the rounds.

It's not farfetched we could have a cute, fluffy kangaroo jump in to the garden and not be able to jump out. Very dangerous critters, especially to dogs. My two boy terriers would just see . One week later & still struggling with Kandy. She has barely eaten all week, even her kibble which she can how have & which she really likes. So I must get her to the vet by bus tomorrow by 8 a.m. Vet has squeezed us in for a 2nd dose of buprenorphine, which is strong pain relief. She refused her 2nd dose of Onsior tablet last week so has had no pain relief since last Tuesday. My feeling is that her mouth is still painful, which is why she’s avoiding her food dishes. She would like to eat kibble, but doesn’t seem to know how to get it in her mouth. So stressful & worrying. Praying every day that this will improve for her. Cats are super-stoic & they will do anything not to show weakness. Kandy has not cried once.

Stirchley

Kandy seems to have turned a corner. (Fingers crossed.) Slow-release 3 days dose of buprenorphine given yesterday + an NSAID + an appetite stimulant. I also have 4 syringes of buprenorphine to give her at the weekend. Problem, I think, was insufficient painkiller these past 7 days. Anyway, we got back from the vet yesterday & she immediately ate kibble & later wet food. This has continued.

I'm sure she'll do great. Carnivores like cats hardly chew their food anyway -- chewing is for fibrous stuff like grass. I've known plenty of cats (as well as dogs) who barely seemed to even notice being completely toothless. I remember in particular doing a dental cleaning on a cat with a mouthful of "wind chimes" -- teeth hanging by a thread, practically flapping in the breeze. When I called the owner afterward and told him how many teeth we'd had to pull, he was shocked -- "How's he gonna eat?!" (Trust me, he was eating despite those teeth, not with them!) Anyway, I'm a bit drunj at the end of a long week. All the best to you and Kandy!

BoxOfficePoison, thanks! Final appointment today & Kandy is fine. Total cost = $3,100. This cat hospital is very top grade, as one can tell from its fees. Also a very “sticky” vet hospital. Was suckered into another blood test today for Kandy “just to check”. Kicking myself for doing that since it added $120 to the bill.

What were they following up on? Systemic infection stemming from gingivitis? Liver assessment since she hadn't been eating, and/or given the meds she's been on? Previous, unrelated health issues? (All good potential reasons, in my opinion, but if course I'm only speculating.) At any rate, you're not a sucker. You paid for top-quality care for her, and got it. Well done to both of you!

White blood cells count, which isn’t quite what it should be. Also slight inflammation of rear paw pads. Vet called yesterday & said this should be followed up when Kandy has her physical in October, but nothing to worry about now.

Definitely considering switching to this vet for Kandy. I like my current vet, but I have always blamed her for the death of my kitten. He would still be alive if we had gone to this new vet. New vet costs slightly more for office visits, but the bus stops right at the door & I was impressed with Kandy’s aftercare, the follow-up calls, etc.

My husband would tell you that the thing I am most afraid of & repulsed by is bats. And, don’t you know, whenever he is away a bat will appear in the house. Murphy’s Law! Yesterday morning in the basement I immediately noticed some disarray in my laundry area. Then I heard a horrid chittering sound. Looked down & a beastly little bat was clinging to the washing machine cover (from an old comforter). It probably was terrified by Kandy & Looby Loo. Crud! Now I had to get it outside, which I had never done before. So I quickly bundled it up in the comforter cover, which was easy, & got it outside. Tried to shake it off the cover, but it was reluctant to go. Finally, it crawled off & haven’t seen it since. Luckily, the darn thing had not flown out of the basement into the house since I would have freaked. Especially if I could not find it. In past years (twice) I have had to call an exterminator to catch bats in my house when husband was away. Praying no more bats appear.

Horrid! Disgusting and creepy and horrid!!!!!!When I was younger, just out on my own, there was a bat got loose in our apartment building- type of place where we were all young and friends with each other. It also seemed that the' house ' cat may have gotten a hold of it. So someone had to catch it to make sure it wasn't sick and would infect the cat. Out of all these so called uninhibited, free spirited, adventurous buddies- ya know the kind who'd hitchhike alone to Mexico (I would maybe take a bus alone to Boston. maybe) or go downhill skiing off a glacier( I would maybe roller skate at a rink) - guess what shy, quiet -living lil gal somehow got elected to catch this friggin bat.

I donned a slicker and rain hat and galoshes type boots for protection
( which probably would have been as effective as the raincoats were for that Russian submarine crew in K 19, had that bat been .....feisty. ) Used a broom to get it in a shoebox and bussed the friggin clacking clicking rattling horrid thing to the lab.

I don't wanna tell you what they did to a bat in those days to see if they're not ill. But honestly, even to this animal lover, they must be the most nauseating disgusting creatures on earth
I know we're all the Lord's creatures, but I'n still not to sure that applies to bats. Brrrrrrrrrrrr.

Anyways, , I' m a bit older now and less fearless ( or stupid) than when I let these so called friends cajole me into dealing with that
g~{#%d$(;:n bat with conniving words like, "oh you're just SUCH a nature lover and you are SO very good with animals. "

As Dylan said when " threats too noble to neglect, deceived me into thinking I had something to protect" - well I may have thought I was a big caoable mature old soul then; but

I ' m younger than that now."

And if I ever found a bat in MY basement these days
😬😫😩😨😷😳 I'd fumigate and/or burn every piece of clothing and furniture in the house.

And then I'd move.

On the plus side, I went for a walk in a nearby nature preserve today, and at the pond's edge, I saw an egret; a chipmunk scampering through the underbrush; two blue herons in their nest( chicks were in there but didn't poke their heads up yet); and two lovely tawny colored deer, grazing in the woods.

Very nice day.

And no bats😀

I remember visiting a park in southern Nevada (Red Rocks? Valley of Fire? Oh well, doesn't matter), sitting on a sandstone ledge for what seemed like five minutes (really more like an hour), watching a fairly large number of bats flapping back and forth between the cliff walls not five meters in front of me. One of my most serene memories.

two blue herons in their nest

Wow, where do they nest?

Herons are rare around here. One park has a single heron (not seen this year). There have been 2 herons there some years, but never seen together.

We have blue herons around here, in Western Washington. I seen one flying some months ago, it was huge! I probably have pictures of them somewhere, I use to take a camera when I'd go fishing and they hang around lakes.

Husband in Europe until next week & the latest freakin thing is a huge raccoon outside my front door Saturday night. I wanted to go out in the dark to give 3 outdoor cats a final snack, but no way was I going out when I saw the raccoon. He had climbed up our front steps to get to front door. I would have been so scared if I had actually been outside & it came along.

I have been lazy with outdoor cats by leaving their food unattended & overnight though husband told me not to. Now I stay with them while they eat, no food is left & I do not go out when it’s dark.

So far I have had carpenter ants in the master bedroom window frame (I think I have eliminated them), a bat in the basement & a raccoon. :(

Do these creatures only appear when hubbie's away? Maybe they have a six sense, unless your husband prowls the grounds every night when he's home, warding off critters.

Raccoons - well I 've seen them munching on a down the road neighbor's garbage cans once. Cute critters , especially the babies, but I try to keep a safe distance. He learned - after a raccoon episode I won't even repeat
here ( don't want to rattle you, you've been thru enough) - to keep those cans well secured. Hasn't seen them since. Gal, you need an onsite exterminator ! I think just feed the cats only in the day when you're there, and then take the feeding bowls away, which the raccoon may explore. Can't help with the ants. And you KNOW how I feel about bats!- right about now I would be thinking of a Super 8. ( don't drive? well surely there's a Hilton in your area😏)
Re: herons, I don't think I would have seen them on my own.The nest is not so easy to spot. ( fyi blue herons live in any wet area- they are wading birds- all over the continental US.You may have them, but haven't seen them. ) A nature loving birder friend spotted them first, and he showed me where to find the nest. They build it high up on the top of a tree. Wouldn't have seen it myself, but birders have a keen eye. So high up, I never thought I'd see them at all, but lo and behold, they lift their long-necked heads up constantly for our viewing pleasure. The other sure fire way to spot them is to look for a small herd of people who are pointing their cell phones up at a tree..Works every time.

Rescued a little dog locked in a car yesterday with all the windows closed. A friend who happens to live on that street (neighboring ‘hood to mine) was outside her house so she helped me. A female parole officer happened to be on the street too so she also participated. Animal control was on the way when, suddenly, the dog’s owner ambled by. Turned out he lives on the next street. Typical young Spanish stoner (typical for where I live). I told him he needed to get his head together, the dog could have asphyxiated if it had been a hot day, etc., etc. Not a bad kid. He was contrite & didn’t argue with me & he definitely learned a lesson. Nervous that we might have called the cops who would have searched his car. No clue how long the dog was in the car (didn’t believe anything the kid said), but the dog looked fairly well-cared for (its name was Snoopy) & obviously pleased to see his owner again so I let it go. We called off animal control & continued with our day. My 1st ever rescue from a locked car. :)

Well done! (A few years ago we saw a boa constrictor that some idiot had locked in his truck on a hot summer day; didn't make it.) :(

Off the subject, but I find myself contrasting your story with an episode of "Emergency!" from the early '70s. The paramedics broke into a car to save a baby that had been left inside on a hot Los Angeles day while the mother was getting her hair done, and she was the one who yelled at them. Apparently the incident was played for laughs. How times change!

So did my 2nd dog rescue so far this month today. Was walking downtown enjoying the nice weather when I ran into a few ladies with a stray dog. I told them I didn’t recognize it so we called animal control. Such a nice female dog. About 8 years old & very sweet. A golden smooth-haired dog. So AC turned up whom I happen to be very friendly with & she told us she will do everything to keep the dog from being euthanized. Hopefully the dog is friendly with other dogs since she told us that is one reason dogs are euthanized if they are not. The dog had a collar & she will call over to the neighboring town to see who took it in for its rabies shot. The dog was not chipped.

So frickin’ sad where I live that so many dogs are abandoned. People really make me sick. My friend told me 1st thing she does every day when she comes to work is drive through all the parks in town looking for strays.

In her free time my friend rescues cats & kittens in my town (not where she lives) & she has set up an organization for this. I did not know this & it is useful to know since animal control only takes in dogs. Told her I would send her a check tomorrow to help with the cats’ spay/neuter.

Quite the morning. :)

No I don't want another pet at this time but we'll make sure it's taken care of. The last cat I trapped, they got if fixed and found a home for it. The cat before, which was younger and I trapped myself, I was able to tame it and my in-laws took it. Once this cat trusts me more, I'll have the lady bring me the trap. They'll fix this one and see if it's suitable for a home. If it's too wild, they'll bring it back to me so it can live outside our home. If that happens, I'll have to set up an outdoor shelter. I had a cat door put in the garage a couple of years ago, but these ferals don't use it.

I had to look it up and I found coons, skunks, woodchucks, bats, and foxes as the biggest offenders. I think I've only seen a skunk once on my property, coons a few times but not as much recently. Woodchucks and bats are always around and I've had a couple of red foxes recently.

Volunteered for the 1st time today at a local pet food pantry. Never done anything like this before. Not something I planned, but glad I went. It’s only once a month so should work with my schedule. People come who can’t afford pet carriers (we loan them out), dog leashes, dog beds, cat food, dog food, cat beds, blankets, etc., etc. The other workers there (predominantly Spanish) were very lovely & so friendly. @Dani8 You have possums in your roof? Every year we get a possum or possums. My golden lab Chloe would chase them as they scuttled along the fence and up into the tree. Was so funny. There it would stay and stare at you. I do not mind possums as they are natives but detest bats which crap all over my driveway and are carriers of disease. I dread my Bubbles being bitten one nite.

Friday night I am getting ready for bed & walk into the spare bedroom which has an en suite bathroom, which is our main bathroom. I walk in, turn on the overhead light & a bat is flying around. I shrieked & closed the door. Husband said he would take c/o of it, but not right then since he needed to feed outside cats. I knew I wouldn’t sleep until the bat was gone. Later on he came in bedroom & said he couldn’t find it. I asked him if he had searched with a flashlight. He said he had. Liar!

When husband starts snoring or snuffling in his sleep I sleep in spare bedroom. That night I couldn’t so had to sleep on a loveseat downstairs that is neither long enough or wide enough to sleep on. That was a first for me.

Next morning I knew, unfortunately, that I would have to find the bat. So I faced my fears & carefully searched the bathroom with a flashlight. Nothing. Then I searched bedroom. Nothing. Just as I was leaving I found the bat tucked into one of the window drapes. I closed the doors & husband got bat outside. Ugh.

7 weeks later my friend has returned the cat to its original owner. Who she knows is relocating to PA & cannot take the cat with her. My friend had previously declawed cats or kittens because of her furniture & she said the cat didn’t work out because she clawed furniture legs & jumped on tables & dressers. If a cat is provided with one of those climbing things it won’t jump on tables. I gave her lots of advice, but she took none of it. Really annoyed & disappointed. Goodness knows what will eventually happen to this lovely cat.

I remember Oreo. Such a cute kitty. I hope you find. another home for this sweet looking cat. Why can't the cat go to Pennsylvania? Can the original owner reconsider? PA would be a far less lonely place to settle into with a cat.

Btw I personally would never declaw a cat ( tho I 've known at least one who took pretty good care of herself, w/o claws - long story, maybe for another time) I think if you're gonna have a cat, or two; you may as well just accept the likelihood that your sofa and tablecloths and chair legs and drapes and your good coat in the locked closet that you didn't even know the cats could get into( do cats have hidden thumbs? ;D) -well there's a good chance that all these things are gonna wind up a little......frayed.

Never really bothered me in the long run. After all, I never met a drape or a chair leg that could crawl up into your lap, and snuggle and cuddle and purr.

Well good luck Stirch, I know you'll do every thing you can to find Oreo a good home.

Has anyone given this beguiling little creature a name yet? You know, it's nice for a cat to have a name. And just in case no one wants to adopt him and then maybe your wife would be able to keep him, it would be better if he had a name.

I myself have thought of naming him Pinto because of his attractive black and white markings. But any name you can come up with ( other than 'the s.o.b. who's made his way into my house' lol ) - would be fine.

He looks like a purrer. Some cats don't really purr a lot, but I prefer a cat who does. I think it may not be long til he treats you and/or your gentle hearted wife to a nice long ppuuurrrrrrrrrrr.

It seems like trapping ferals has become a habit so we always give names as soon as we start feeding one.

I doubt that this fully-grown male cat is feral. If he were, he would be desperate to get outside again, spraying everywhere, generally being a pain. He looks extremely content & calm so perhaps only a stray?

The woman from animal services or whatever said he was definitely feral but yes a little bit calm. I have been feeding him for about six months, and the last couple months he had been coming into the garage to eat as I gained his trust. Still, he wouldn't come closer than about 5 feet to me. So anyway I've been working on him for a while.

Aaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww. Omg cricket he's every bit as lovable and adorable as a cat could be. And he's showing that he trusts you by turning his belly to you and stretching. ( and, if I' m not embarrassing you, that's quite a tender side you are showing here too )

It just goes to show how a kind home can change a furry being from scared to happy. And what a lovely voice he has, while having a nice conversation with you. So glad to see Tom thriving.

I bet you'd hate to see him go. I sure will. But glad to see how he's doing now .

I would keep him if it weren't for the dogs. They stand at the top of the stairs blocking his access to the rest of the house. Basement confinement is no life for a cat.

Basement confinement is no life for a cat.

Baring his belly to you so not feral.

Would he be able to go outside from the basement? We’ve had cats in the past who were not allowed anywhere except the basement (for various reasons), but they were all allowed outside also.

No he was definitely feral and the people from animal rescue said the same thing. Ferals will vary in degree of calmness but in time can be tamed into domesticated pets. The younger they are, the easier it is. The feral kitten I caught a couple years back took a few weeks. I've been working on this one almost a year now and he was still hissing at me up until a couple of days ago and he still won't go near my wife.

We have a cat door in the garage door so ferals can come in and warm up but not on the basement door. It's going to be too cold outside for him anyway.

We have 4 outside cats who never come inside. There is a cozy crawl space under the back porch with lots of blankets, etc., but it’s unheated. Cats have fur coats!

Haha it's ok. I found a woman in her 60's who lives alone. Her cat passed away last year at the age of 15 and she needed a companion. Tom Tom will now have the run of the house and all the attention that he wants. His transformation has been amazing.

A wonderful cat. I will miss seeing his charming furry face on mofo. I ' m glad he's going somewhere that sounds like it could be a good cosy home for him. ( Much better than living in a barn imho).
I hope it isn't too hard an adjustment for him. Will you get a 'progress report' on him, or ( more likely) is your end of the job basically done for now?

I could never do what you and
Mrs. cricket do- that is, rescue cats and then find homes for them. I'd get too attached. I'd wind up having 900 cats.

Goodbye Tom (sigh)

Good to hear. Let us know, if you don't mind, how he's doing.

Well, with a couple of dogs, plus an open door policy at the cricket canine hotel, , I guess your hands are pretty busy. Don't even know how you have time for the cat rescue - but you must get a lot of satisfaction from doing it.

Super-stressed with a cat rescue. I have a young female in a cat carrier outside my front door & waiting for my go-to person to arrive from the shelter. She couldn’t come until 4 & I’ve had the cat in the carrier since 1 p.m. so I feel v. guilty & upset that I am putting kitty through this. She is tame (belly rubs), but v. feisty. Was not easy at all to get her in a carrier, but a neighbor helped me & we finally managed it. My plan was to let her out on my sun porch, but, if I did, I could not get her in carrier again. She is v. unhappy, naturally.

It’s a v. nice shelter across the CT river where I can’t get to since I don’t drive. My go-to person is a cat whisperer if ever there was one & I’m glad she is available to help me today. I will give her a check for the shelter & also give her some personal gas money though it is not mandatory.

Kitty is young & she was an accident-about-to-happen. Sitting in front of an apt building & going to & fro across the street. Been seeing her for a few days now & have been v. worried for her safety. (Lots of bad people around & cars.) I consider that she is adoptable & I hope she will have a good life from hereon in. I believe she was either dumped here or left behind. Gosh, I hate people.

Hey Fredrick
06-08-19, 08:56 AM
I was watching a movie the other night when my GF comes running into the room. "You gotta come see this!" So I follow her into the bedroom and look out the window towards the bird feeders and at one of our feeders is a bright yellow bird. Now we aren't birders by any stretch but this was not what we normally see feeding on our cheap seed. The next day she goes out to see if it's still there and sure enough it is. She grabs a handful of sunflower seeds and snapped this:
https://i.imgur.com/PCYndGm.jpg?3

A very friendly bird, she managed to get it into a cat carrier and took it to the Humane Society. The bird had a little tag on one of its legs so it was either carrying vital top secret information and was taking a break from its long journey or someones pet got outside. Either way I'm glad we got to him before the cats.

My new cat Calyx. About a month ago he showed up in our backyard. No doubt some vile person has dumped him. Unfixed male; vet reckons 24 months old. He is now fixed & his ear is clipped to show this. Very nice cat. Friendly but not clingy. Loves his nice food I give him.

With my experience of cats I do not think he would be happy indoors 24/7. In any event there is no room in the nearest shelter, which is full of kittens. An adult cat has little chance of a summer adoption.

He cannot come in our house because I know my 2 females would hate him. So what to do with him? We have 4 outdoor cats already & I am going to try Calyx outside where he seems very happy. If he in any way becomes a nuisance (disturbing the other cats or crying outside our front door) he will have to be adopted.

He’s a good boy. :)

On the way to the grocery store this morning and the cars in front of me were swerving. I ended up following this chihuahua about a half block until he ran up a driveway and on a porch. There was nobody home but they had a camera doorbell they could answer. I made sure he stayed on the porch while they raced home. They said he has a doggie door that he never used before. They were lucky.59309

I was walking down a street close to my house today at the start of a 2 hour walk. Outside one of the scruffy houses on the left-hand side I clearly heard the faint cries of a kitten. (I have acute hearing.) So many cars going by that blocked the sound, but it continued intermittently. Called & called amid all the crap in their front yard, but could not figure out where the mewing was coming from. It ruined my walk, but I decided to return in 2 hours.

When I returned, no crying. One window in this scruffy dump was just a midgin open & I wonder if the the crying came from inside the house? The kitty had not sounded at all happy, but there was nothing I could do. SO annoying.

We’ve had a feral cat in our yard for several years. Husband feeds him & calls him Pappy. He appeared one day & someone had gotten him fixed. I’ve always been afraid of him: he growls, spits & strikes with his paws. Husband once took him to be groomed (his fur was horribly matted in the heat) & the groomer couldn’t even get him out of the carrier.

So for about a month now when I go outside to feed my cat Calyx, Pappy has come very close & I give him a small bowl of kibble. (Husband feeds outside cats & they all get delicious food.) So Pappy doesn’t really need food from me, but he enjoys it.

So yesterday I stroked him a little bit behind his head (never put your hands in front of a cat’s face) & he loved it. He now allows me to stroke him every time without being the least bit afraid & today he rubbed against my legs.

It’s so wonderful when an animal comes to trust one. It really made my day.

Absolutely amazed that Eversource, which is an electric supplier in the northeast, came twice to our street yesterday to rescue a cat stuck wayyyyyyyy up in a tree.

I have it all from hearsay (though I did see the cat in the tree). Apparently the cops were nearby & they alerted a nearby Eversource truck to the situation. Their bucket did not reach the cat so they left. Much to my astonishment they came back later with a bucket that could go higher. Kitty was quite relaxed (though she’d been in the tree for 3 days) & she was easy to grab. Everyone came down to the ground & all Eversource wanted was a photo with the owner & his cat.

I was so relieved. Just the thought of the poor thing in the tree gave me such anxiety.

Sorta-kinda related, but I'm going to be holding an all-day charity stream to benefit animal welfare on Saturday, May 8th. It's primarily focused towards a video game community I'm part of, but there'll be some other games played and it's technically open to (and hopefully entertaining for) anyone.

It'll be at https://www.twitch.tv/spypartyfans. If you have a Twitch account you can follow that now and get a notification when it goes live, but I'll try to remember to post about it here, too, on the day.

Tried to do something nice yesterday. Was on a job when a very young fawn, smallest deer I have ever seen in real life, came running into the yard and plopped down about 50 ft from me. Middle of the day which is kind of a strange time to see deer hopping around. I stood there waiting for the mom to come but she never did. The thing was facing away from me so I was able to walk up to it and even pet it a little but as soon as I moved to where it could see me it let out a bleat (really loud, sounds just like a goat) and hopped into a nearby flower bed and hunkered down again. Followed it, it let out another bleat, ran to another bed and I never saw it again. Told the homeowner about it who then called the city and they said if it isn't injured there's nothing they can do about it. Just leave it. So, there's a tiny fawn hopping around somewhere whose mother either abandoned it or, more likely, was hit by a car. If it's old enough to survive and stays in the yard it's in, the people who live there will do whatever it takes to keep it going but it was very small, so I don't know.

Years ago I was driving around and there was some roadkill in the middle of the lane and a hawk sitting on a telephone pole staring at it. I figured it was going to eat it so I got a stick and shoved the roadkill onto the grass so the hawk wouldn't get run over if it happened to fly down to have a snack.

Momma deer go out during the day looking for food & she leaves her fawn behind. She can be away for several hours. One should never ever move a baby deer from the place momma left it. She will return.

So the situation you describe is very worrisome since the fawn is moving around. I pray to the Dear Lord to keep it safe & get it back to its mother. If momma is alive she will, of course, come looking for her baby.

It’s nice of you to care.
