View Full Version : Breaking Bad All Over Again

This is the thread for those of us who plan on rewatching Breaking Bad together. I will put the schedule in this post for any of those who want to join in. Any Mofos is welcome to watch or follow along and give us your thoughts as we go. I think it will be hard to talk about the show and leave out the context of what we all know. So, spoilers abound. Happy watching. Yoda dteam6 Dani8 cat_sidhe Elessar
This looks fun. I've been wanting to rewatch the show ever since seeing it for the first time last year
Wooo.
OK my thoughts on startng a rewatch of the pilot this morning were
http://31.media.tumblr.com/37eeafa41848ca87919d2b2f9500fddf/tumblr_n2nek0fHuE1s1ghg9o2_250.gif
(horrible word warning) Foreshadowing? The bandaids on the bullet holes not to mention the number of times they all need to be bandaged. Yeah yeah I know I'm reaching.
The other that really got me was pushing unconscious Jesse out of the way to grab his wallet and camera, and leaving the poor kid in the van while he gave his confession then went towards the sirens. Can't believe I never noticed that before. The monster was always there from the get go.
The birthday handjob. Now this was one of the things that skyler haters obsessed over, but I think even worse was facon on his birthday, and organising a party when he told her he didnt want one. Ball breaking hen pecker from the outset. I can sort of wave off the hand job, s deplorable as that was, because she's up the duff and hormonal, but still, pretty dreadful thing to do.
Hank giving a birthday speech then before Walt even gets to reply he shouts for the news to be turned on. All these people are so up themselves and self important.
That's as far as I got before I nodded off thanks to my evil lounge. Will finish later.

I might join. It'll be my third rewatch of the show.
I might join. It'll be my third rewatch of the show.
Join in. The more the merrier, MM, and you obviously enjoyed t much more than BCS.
Oh and it will be interesting who got the censored version and who got uncensored. Mine was the latter. Jesse's nude milf was not doctored with a cgi bra, and the handjobby was in it; I noted on imdb back then a lot of americans got the censored version. WTH? Boobs and a HJ under the covers was axed? But it's perfectly fine to see a guy getting his head amputated and blown up?
Huummmmm.
Just finished my third viewing may be two months ago. I may try to keep up though.
Pilot

I believe this is the only episode of BB that I have seen more than once. I have started a rewatch two or three times and just never followed through. Probably my favorite pilot this side of The Shield but it does have some chinks when you know the characters.
I think most pilot episodes suffer from over the top characterizations and this is no different. Because of that I won't go through them one by one, almost to a person all of these characters will become more settled.
Danii8 mentioned the hand job which is something that I think definitely sticks in the head of any BB fan. I find it just to be short hand, bit of pun intended, for where they are in their marriage. I never found Skylar over bearing. Sure she doesn't take much responsibility later in the series but I never found her out of line before she knew what Walt was up to. If your spouse's behavior changes drastically I don't find it out of line to inquire as to what is going on with them. When they are obviously evasive it would only be natural to think something out of line is happening. Just one divorced man's opinion. :D
In the BCS thread the cold open here was mentioned and I couldn't agree more with Yoda and dteam6's opinion. The story telling mechanisms Gilligan uses are brilliant and he has only become more skilled at it.
Very good episode. I am pleased to be back in this world.
4
Things to look for going forward:
1) Tighty Whiteies...get it?
2) How important breakfast time is for Jr
3) Jesse foreshadowed ownership issues with his home
4) Cool cook sequences. Amazing how subdued this one was when you think about what they become
5) Walt's award in chemistry comes into play
I thought it just showed a cooling in the relationship as well, and never disliked the character. After the falling out with Gretchen I could totally understand why he chose a woman like her. He wanted to just give in to someone who would take the reins and let him be a low achiever. Totally agree on her reactions to finding out he was a liar. I never disliked her, but as I said I thought some of her pre Heisenberg awareness was a bit how ya going but who would think such a mild mannered nerd would be doing stuff like that.
I thought the setting up of this dynamic was very clever.

What's the name of the song that plays at the end of episode 2?
And lol, more urghh foreshadowing - jesse and walt looking up through emilio's hole in the wall -v- skyler looking down into the crawl space at Walt.

This might just be my favorite episode of Breaking Bad. MovieMed mentioned how funny this show is and that is what I couldn't stop thinking my second time through with this episode. Considering the subject matter there is no way I should be laughing and smiling as much as I did here. Everything Jesse does from dumping his weed so he has a baggie for ice all the way to the proud smirk he has when using the bike lock on Crazy8's neck. It is all gold and I chuckled so much watching this episode. I say all that without even mentioning the bathtub which is easily the most memorable moment in BB for me. It has never left my head all these years later. Personal note: Danii8, if you can watch this episode as many times as you have, you can make it through No Country For Old Men. ;)
I am going to be keeping a close eye on the Skylar hate. This just might be the episode that sent people on that path but I would behave exactly as her in this situation. I know pot smoking is not at the top of the naughty list but I was thinking about when I was married. Lets say my son was just born and after displaying some unusual behavior I find out my social worker wife who I have built this life with is buying weed from one of her ex-clients. On top of that they are calling the house and have highly questionable social media pages. Yeah, I would probably act a little more intense than Skylar did to be honest.
Absolutely perfect episode. going to be hard to top it for me. 5
Didn't notice any glaring precursors this episode. If anyone else does let me know.
[CENTER][SIZE="6"] Yeah, I would probably act a little more intense than Skylar did to be honest.
I know, right. Hanging out with a dead beat (as much as I love Jesse I would be pretty shocked if I discovered my husband was hanging out with someone like that and not being honest with me, especially if I had a DEA brother in law), and while up the duff. I thought she was pretty calm, especially when he told her
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9cj66lOprs
The look on his face and the tone of his voice because he'd been caught out, and calling her honey, then saying if she got off his ass he'd appreciate it.
And Marie. Could not tolerate her this season but for me she redeemed herself later on, but loved the scene when Hank called her from a bust to say hello, then starts screaming at the druggies and calmly gets back to her, and she's just like Oh Hank! 'Where's my sugar'
And Marie. Could not tolerate her this season but for me she redeemed herself later on, but loved the scene when Hank called her from a bust to say hello, then starts screaming at the druggies and calmly gets back to her, and she's just like Oh Hank! 'Where's my sugar'
Yeah, I haven't mentioned Marie because we haven't seen her much. I really dislike her for quite a while. I do soften when she starts helping with the kids a lot but she is never a character I am totally on board with. The petty theft crap bothers me so much.
I might have jumped one ahead. Cant remember if I last saw 3 or 4. I just couldnt stop at 2. Please forgive me, boss. It turns me into a meth head. Oh speaking of meth heads, Windy Wendy arrives (it's 3).
I could understand the thieving, especially down the track with MAJOR SPOILER, ELESSAR)
all the stress Hank was putting her through when he was laid up after the shooting. That kind of petty thieving is a mental disorder,
and Hank's situation and shtty behaviour, although I also understand why he behaved that way, sent her into a relapse
but it was her self absorption that rubbed me up the wrong way. Until that point in my spoiler tag, she only ever thought of herself.
Getting back to Skyler's reaction - I dont care who smokes weed; hell, I've smoked it, but if I was UTD and had a disabled teenager, then found out after acting suspiciously that my brilliant dork of a husband was hanging out with a drug dealer and smoking dope behind my back I'd be very very pissed off. Is he in denial about the baby or just not wanting the responsibility. I think that would be very upsetting to a cray cray hormonal pregnant woman, and rightly so. Will my teenage son get access to it. Sure, he'd be able to get it at school but I would loathe the idea of his father providing him easy access. Why is this deadbeat calling my home. All this stuff would be going through my head. And what's a MILF...LOL.
I agree, Sean. Fantastic episode. I thought Jesse showed what a quick thinker he could be to spin around to make her face away from Emilio. And trying out the size of the tub always makes me laugh. And the fact Walt knew he was dealing with a kid who never took notice in his class but didnt bother explaining the no bath tub rule just showed how far his head was up his colon back then.
If I jump ahead too fast and you'd prefer to keep it to discussing only 2 a week to keep the thread tidy just give me a yelp. This show gives me substance abuse.
OK about to rewatch 4 but wanted to say this about skyler in that episode. Elessar, spoilery so just scroll over.
A lot of the hate for her came from the talking pillow. People thought she was a bitch because she wanted Walt to have chemo and radiation so that made her, in their eyes, a control freak. Now for me she always was a control freak from the get go - note the flashback to them inspecting the house when she was UTD with Junior and she wouldnt let Walt have any input into the type of family home he envisaged for them. Her demand he have treatment, however, was perfectly reasonable as far as I;m concerned. He tells them he has cancer and doesnt want treatment. Perfectly natural reaction for a person to freak out about no treatment in that situation. He's only 50 and has a baby on the way, she loves him and doesnt want to lose her husband and father of her children. People in the fandom said that made her a selfish bitch. WTH? My father in law refused treatment for lung cancer but he was in his 70s. I never understood that reaction to her.
Another thing people hated her for was smoking while pregnant. She smoked, what, maybe three cigarettes? Yet Walt killed people and was given a hall pass because he's the lead character. Give me a break. Just seemed absurd to me.
Ep 4 and 5 so you might want to skip this, El, although probably not too spoilery. Just a few observations.
Jesse's parents - just heartbreaking. I know they had to show him tough love but I was hanging out for them to just give him one more chance, then the whole deal with the joint. Really showed him as loyal to the people he cared about. Any nerds on here know the different areas the different houses were in? No reason other than I'd be interested in checking out the different styles of architecture just for some real estate fun.
Second visual of camera PoV into 'the coffin'. What are the chances that was a fluke by the director doing the same in crawl space?
The intervention. Sky was a complete bitch shouting down Marie when she had said everyone gets a chance to offload without interruption, and obviously she just wanted backup to make walt get treatment, but I cant blame her. I thought her reaction was spot on.
Jesse throwing the 4 grand into the pool a la Walt later setting the money on fire then throwing it in the pool. Oh and Walt dipping into his stash and it all got sucked down the aircon vent LMAO. Such a bumbling moron at times.
Gretchen and Elliott - what ghastly people. Finally two characters I dislike a lot. Would not like people like that IRL, but I still dont know why Walt wouldnt take the job offer other than hubris, and probably thinking Elliott was an up himself tool who would mince around pitying him. Yeah come to think of it, I wouldnt have taken the job from some pretentious twat like him when I had C either. Or is it possible he's still in love with Gretchen?
Any chemistry nerds on here? Is his breakdown of chemicals that make up the human body correct, and if so has anyone discovered the missing percentage? And is his formula for near perfect meth correct? I failed chemistry and a scientist I am most definitely not.
Badger - what a moron but so funny seeing him chase after Jesse with his bow. Why on earth did Jesse take him along anyway? Surely he was capable of doing it on his own at that point. When he tossed out the batches I really did feel like a meth head and certainly empathised with Badger. Gif time
https://media.giphy.com/media/QAVTMsvrXixJm/giphy.gif
I'm sure there's more but I didnt take notes, and tl;dr but thanks if anyone manages to churn through that rambling.
Nerdgasm. Going bck for ep 6. I just cant hold myself back.
Ep 6. How the hell did I miss this. There's a cold open to Heisenberg's amazing confrontation with Tuco.

I've watched the first 4 episodes now...
Awesome as ever.
Well ep 6 answers one of my questions. Jesse took Badger along because at tht point he didnt have the confidence to do it on his own. It wasnt until Walt had his fainting spell in the desert and he told Jesse to go finish the batch that he knew he was a michelin star chef.
This is not meth

Quite possibly one of my top three BrBa moments.
Interesting protocol for treating his cancer. Quite different to what I experienced.

I'm at the Pilot and half Ep 1.
Gosh this show shove adrenaline in from the first moment. There's not even a boring half second.
It's great to see a scientifically critical mind as Walter at crime work. I wish I could have a chemistry teacher like that. Those kids didn't know how lucky they were.
I saw that famous Skyler...
Trying to forget what I read about her in BCSaul's thread (something with Chuck).
But boy do I hate that bossy look on her face.
She looks at her husband like "I have you in my palm".
And the handjob scene was hilarious - I laughed out loud when I saw the look on Walt's face and in his eyes.
Can you believe a lot of people in the fandom thought season 1 and 2 was slow and boring when it first aired? Must be binge watchers who cant watch week to week. I didnt find a single boring moment in both seasons.
LOL at your bossy face comment. She has a very good resting bitch face, and you should see the look on her face when Walt finally takes his balls back.
The handjob scene was gold. When she shrieks YES and he jumps.
Oh that;s another thing about ep 6 (not spoilery, El, but skip if you dont want a flash forward comment)
Walt loses his temper at Jesse when he gives Walt $1300 and tells him to grow some balls. Projecting much!
Ep 7 - havent seen it all yet; had a little kip after the second meeting at the car wreck yard (what a dump!) when the Heisenberg hat first makes it's appearance
http://uproxx.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/07-1-hat.gif?w=650
And the scene at the school meeting about the stolen lab equipment when Heisenberg gets flooded with testosterone, touches up Skyler then takes her out to the car to shag right next to a patrol car...and did they make that car rock! When Bryan and Anna had chemistry (no pun intended) they really had chemistry.
One more thing - Marie at the baby shower. What a complete pain in the ass.
Oh and
Sky: where did that come from...and...why was it so good
Walt: because it was illegal.
Boom!!! Heisenberg has definitely arrived.
I'd like to know who makes the decisions for the music choices in these 2 shows. There's never a bad pick. The ultimate mix tape Scoobididoobiddy Doo.

That's right, during my short 1.5 ep the music already impressed me. When that music started playing and some quirky scene begin (can't even remember which, there are plenty), I was on for some fun ride.
I kinda like Walter's son, at least til now. He's the opposite to his bug-eyed mum.

I forgot they used Molotov in the first episode. Hadn't heard that in years!
My boyfiend got home in a bit of a state from a hellish weekend doing sound and tour managing (for well...the Norwegian version of Gene Simmons, I guess ) and when I told him I was doing BB all over again with you guys, he said I'M IN!!! Great, so now I can't rewatch without him. We caught up with the first episode.
I'm up to 205. Found a major booboo by Walt. When Hank visits him in the hospital after the 'fugue state' Walt thanks him for 'coming out to find me'. Hank didn't twig?
The crystal palace - Hank and Gomie dont think to question reception about when Jesse and Windy checked in? Sure it's probably run by junkies but why not go in and intimidate them, although I guess that's actually Windy's room so I didnt really think that through. Scratch that one.
Fingerprints on the guns. In US arent suspects fingerprinted or do they have to be charged? How about teachers for background checks?
The bike lock that killed crazy8 makes a comeback! And not for cheerful purposes.
Back to Skyler hate - another reason she was hated was because she gave Walt the silent treatment and locked him out, but he was a liar, which she knows damn well because the guy cant lie straight in bed and instead gives a B grade performance, and locked her out, but I guess the haters were swayed by him pulling the victim card with the Why are you doing this to me; I have cancer. Well sorry buddy, but cancer affects the whole family.
And how did he not burn the house down? He left the oven on the stove, went to answer the door for some chitchat with Junior's friend, then went to the bathroom to have more chitchat with Sky about why Junior changed his name. Not really relevant but I just thought it was a little detail the writers didnt attend to or simply left on the cutting room floor. I would have liked to see consequences, even for such a miniscule action.
One more - why was he so desperate to sneak home and hide the money and gun again when he was being discharged the next day, and why did he put them in the diaper box to start with?

Happy travels. Where to this time?
There's a new mofo who wants to join the group - he'll be watching for the first time like you so all of my posts will have the number of the episode when I'm giving spoilers, otherwise I'll just be joining in with discussion for those sticking to the 2 eps per week suggestion.
So on that note
213 - ABQ.
Wow. I forgot how gut wrenching this finale was. Jane - Walt - Jesse ending up in a crack house. Wanted to cry but I was just so unnerved, even after all these rewatches. Skyler finding out the extent of her husband's lies - My god she really is Chuck. She knew Walt was a liar and Chuck knew exactly what his brother did to those documents. How anyone can not empathise with those two in those reveal moments is a bit beyond me. Walt pulling the crocodile tears was so well done, but nup - he was a lying tool. What else would a wife and new mum be thinking he lied about. The real reason he didnt turn up to the birth of their baby? You bet. I would have left for the weekend and kicked him out as well. Sky might not be everyone's cup of tea, and that's fine, but she was spot on about her lying sack of sht absent husband (I still love Wall just so you know). And Jane's dad. Why oh why didn't he drag her ass to rehab the night before. So tragic.
Exhausting episode. Utterly brilliant. So glad Villigan didnt kill off Jesse. Aaron is phenomenal. For those who may not know, Jesse was originally planned to get snuffed in season 1 but villigan and gould decided the actor was just too good to let go.

...And The Bag's In The River
This is probably not going to be one I consider a favorite. It has a great climax but most of the rest feels pretty padded. That's not something I will accuse BB of very much. I really didn't love the plate moment either. Another scene that makes me want to call out Dani8 for being able to watch this and not making it past the opening of No Country. :D Remember my rating are on the BB curve. Any episode of this show is more compelling to me than all but a few shows I hold in higher esteem.
3
Cancer
This one made me laugh a lot. I forgot about how we are introduced to Jessie's parents. It still took me a second to get my bearings when that scene started and it reminded me how absolutely perfect that transition was the first time I saw it. The change of tone is so jarring, it feels as if you are thrown into a commercial. Then to see Jessie caught in the patio furniture. Absolutely perfect. If I have a gripe it's that neither time through have I bought that a kid Jessie's brother age who acts the way he does is smuggling pot into the house. The White BBQ is some pretty solid dramatic stuff.
4
Gray Matter
In this episode I can actually begin to understand how people feel about Skyler the way they do. The intervention is pretty painful and I forgot how I got on Maria's side in that scene. I do excuse it for the most part though because I have to remind myself going through the emotion of losing a spouse is probably second only to what Walter is going through. I am not in love with the Gray Matter stuff but it does shine a spotlight in Walt's pride and it's not poorly done. That suit, I mean, I know Walt is a nerd but those buttons highlight it more than I needed. :p Jessie's cook is an amazing sequence. Seeing him act like Walt and Badger act like him. Plus I love that Jessie doesn't try to be uptight when Walt comes back, the dynamic goes back to being the exact same.
3.5
Crazy Handful Of Nothin'
I honestly forgot how quickly Heisenberg comes. Our introduction to Tuco. The call back of the Mercury. Really great story telling in this one.
4.5
I wanted to get all my watching in for the next week because I will be out of town next week and am not sure if I will get to watch anything. I will at least finish the season this weekend. I might try to go a little faster since it seems most of you are and I don't ant the thread to get boring.
Sean, it was the strangling in no country that got me. Most strangling scenes in film take 3 seconds and poof, lights out. That and the strangling in the Aussie movie In Her Skin got me. Made me very uncomfortable.
Double reps for your comment about Jesse and badger. Karma, bitch.

I'll visit Japan, China, Qatar, Thailand, Vietnam, and frigging India! (for the first time), all within July. It's not even because i have enough money to travel to all those countries: To visit my parents, I took the cheapest flight possible, and it transits at every airport around, a dozen hours at each. It's enough for me to go to the city center, see some tourist cliche lanscape, bought some meal, fall in love with some local guy, get heartbreak over saying gooodbye to him, get lost on the way back to the airport, running and sweating to the gate just before it close.
Happy breaking bad, guys.
I love Coen bro too. I'll have to watch that movie.

She does. I notice women's voice because I sound like a chipmunk.

those cousins never fail to creep me out.
And Walt's speech about the collision - cant decide if he was feeling remorse or not.

Oh god, the only time I actually disliked skyler was when she bumped uglies with him. Ted is a sleaze bag. Very poor choice but I guess she didnt know many single men and she just needed some comforting. Still. I'd rather go hug a dog or cat than that guy.

I wonder how much of my Skyler hate was tied up in the anxious feelings the show gave me on first watch. Still no excuse for banging Beneke, wtf.

I think it's just pretty normal to root for the lead and be annoyed by anyone who gets in his way, thus Yoda's commentary about chuck -v- sky. As I said, I can easily understand and appreciate why people didn't like her. My issue was with how insane some people in the fandom got with it, to the point they didnt even understand why she

gave him the money. I just found that really quite dense. She made it perfectly clear why she had to do that. She had no choice at all.

I was mind blown; had never seen anything like it before, or since. Closest was probably Katey Sagal in SoA. Some pretty horrible filth was thrown her way. And Jennifer Lawrence. I just dont get it.

Yeap.
The Qatar and Thailand part has passed well. I learnt plenty of beautiful things from the Quran and Buddha's teaching.
About JLawrence, it was because Hollywood is ridiculously favored her since the beginning. I'm tired of seeing her everywhere, with basically one type of acting.

Very cool, El. Just looked up qatari cuisine. I want that qarwa. Would probably be as strong as meth.
I watched 303 thinking something was not quite right and just realised I missed 302. Derp moi.
Lisa and I are just about to start season 4.
So, we had started this re-watch with a couple of our Movie/Show club friends, Marta and Felicia. Halfway through season 2, they just up and say "Sorry guys, this is just not a good show. We hate all these characters!."
So...they bailed on the show. We were stunned! This goes back to that discussion about whether or not a show has to have likable characters to be good. We had just finished what I thought was a fantastic episode (Peekaboo), and these guys pipe in saying it's a bad show. WTF!!! :(

It's not a good show because the characters are not to their liking? What sort of shows do they watch?
My eldest brother loved it initially and bailed but not because he thought it wasnt a good show. He felt the genius having a midlife crisis was a bit too close to the bone and it made him uncomfortable to think he could have an inner monster lurking and wanting to break out.
They were groping for a character to latch on to but gave up after a while, They hated pretty much everyone but Walter Jr. Sadly, they didn't stick it out long enough to meet Saul. Oh well. Can't win em all!

I really don't see what's not interesting about the characters. For me the whole thing is a study in human frailty. Each to their own, though. Maybe they prefer lighter stuff? It can be a painful watch at times.
I watched the finale of season one and first two episodes of season two. Try to post about them the next couple days. Everyone still playing along?

in the hospital and Sky, on the fly, concocts the gambling story to convince Marie to take their money. Utterly brilliant but she should have left it there. The next step just confirmed for me what a control freak she was and was completely unnecessary imo but she couldnt help herself.
Speaking of flies, episode Fly. 310
This got a lot of hate in the fandom because of the ole 'nothing happens'. I thought it was superb and think that fly needs a payrise.
Ha. Had to take the breaks off to get through season 3 so jumping ahead again.

dinner at Gustavo's house. I dont know the name of the song to check this out but there's a woman singing in spanish faintly in the background as he talks to Walt over Paila Marina (which I think I'll make tonight). I have a feeling this is played again in BCS.

And btw, Sedai, that story makes me feel depressed. Of course, even universally loved shows and movies will have its haters... But man, what a shame...
I concur. Some episodes are downright bummers! Still a great watch.
Oh speaking of haters, just had another thought that temporarily slipped my mind. Sky haters again - 311
This is probably what cemented the complete wig out about her. Sky and Walt are discussing which business to go with to launder the dirty dough. She offers to run the car wash and he says no because they are divorced. Sky admits she never lodged the paperwork...and the wigout crowd were convinced it was because she loved the money. I;m sure those people all watch while playing on their gadgets. She comes right out with it 'a wife cannot be compelled to testify against her husband'. She was protecting her family unit. And furthermore, if she stayed in the marriage for the money wouldn't she have enjoyed spending it rather than hoarding it? That hatred just always had me shaking my head.
Hope you're having a great time in Greece, MM. We had olives, taramasalata and dolmades for dinner in your honour.
I concur. Some episodes are downright bummers! Still a great watch.
I thought MM was talking about your friends?
Ha...I misread it to say THE story and not THAT story. Whoops!

I did the same initially, then wondered which story in the show was depressing because I get buzzed out of my head lol
Since we are on the subject..well...now.... ;)
Pinkman, for sure. Quite a few really depressing turns for the character.

Oh yeh. Just saw the one where he finds out about who shot Combo. And I think I said earlier that 2 episodes I find very difficult to rewatch are the ATM one and the meth house. Both made me feel quite unwell emotionally so I skipped them this time.

Another hand joby LOL. I forgot about that. Is that censored for any of you Muricans?
And Walt's line in the final scene. Goosebumps.
I love the actress who plays Andrea!
Oh and what was the green stuff Jesse snorted in his car before the final scene? Or was it blue and just looked green?
Finally Wendy's opening montage. :ove it every time!!!

Great finale. I really can't get enough of Tuco. That dude is bonkers. I absolutely love the heist. One of the best BB moments.

Seven Thirty-Seven
This one has actually already mostly left my mind which means I won't rate it.
Grilled
Forgot how good this episode was. I love the demise of Tuco and also the beginning of Teo. I still don't understand why Walt and Jessie would talk in front of him. The other plot hole that really bothers me is how in the hell Hank would trace Jessie's car to Tuco's house. I love everything else but have to give a star deduction for those two huge blunders. Also the start of Walt's ricin obsession.

Oh yes. One of my favourite characters. Apparently Raymond said he didnt want to come back because the role was so exhausting, but take that with a grain of salt because I didnt see the interview.

He called Gomie and asked him to track it down (satellite I assumed)
Talking in front of Tio is exactly the sort of blustering thing those two clowns would have done. They dont get street smart until later. Annoyed me as well but all of their cock ups annoyed me. It's just who they were - bumbling idiots.
I saw Box cutter last night. Still holds up to a rewatch. I think it's where I fell out of love with
Gustavo. Mr nice guy all gone now

Good call. In my head I thought that was to get his address, but he already had that info. Still not convinced it's that easy but at least it is an explanation. I know a couple cops. I will inquire.

Just had a thought, considering it was several years ago it might not have been that easy so yeah, might actually be a goof. They goofed about Osama bin Laden later with the neo nazis. I dont mind so much about those timeline goofs because I get so sucked in I watch it as the present, but I know stuff ;like that really annoys people.

I try not to let it but that's one that is just glaring to me. Especially since they go out of their way to make it so isolated. They know all the major players as well. So they can track down Jesse's car in the middle of nowhere but they don't know that's where Tuco is stashing his drug pin grandfather. Just a bridge too far. Which sucks because I love everything else about the episode.

Now you've ruined it for me :goof: (there you go; there's even an emoji for it). Does seem too rushed and convenient now you point it out. There I was thinking Gomie was a super sleuth. OK here's another now you bring up Tuco, how did the DEA not know he was a drug lord dealing from tht office which you'd think would be under 24/7 surveillance, and why wasnt there any discussion about the explosion?

It's been a while, but I remember Hank using some type of tracking device (not what he tried to use on Gus). I couldn't remember specifically, so a quick google revealed that when interviewing Pinkman's mom he realized that because of the style car he drove, he probably had a security device called Lojack (http://www.lojack.com/About-LoJack).
It was just dumb luck the car signal happened to be at Tuco's hideout.
I wish I had started back with you guys =*(

I wish you had as well. This is fun but I get over excited/totally drugged out on faux crystal I race ahead. About to crank out 403.
Oh nice one. My husband used to have a tracking device on his car that sounds similar to that but the company went belly up few years ago.
Oh no, I've been sucked in to nitpick hell by Gustavo's air filtering machinery.
I was happy with that explanation of the tracker but then it hit me - why wouldnt he have just got Gomie straight on to it rather than go and see his mum?
Simple answer - because the lead up to all of it at Tuco's hovel was interesting for me so I can give it a hall pass if it is a goof. I dont like it very much when I dissect stuff like this because it makes me feel bad that I'm dissing the writers. Also gave it a lot of suspense and then BOOM you see Hnk arriving right in the middle of the fight.
Also, Jesse's mum and Hank scene showed how much she still loved Jesse so for me it really worked. Almost had me sniffling like a baby.

I'd have to watch it again, but I don't think the idea even occurred to him until the convo with mom mentioned the hydraulic bounce kit. That tech triggered a realization like "...oh yeah,he put a lot of money into his car... yeah... oh snap! he prob has lojack!!!" *calls Gomez* There's an argument that a cop might run that possibility first, but even still, we all slip up! And considering Walt had been missing, I can excuse a slip or two from anxiety. Wait. This all takes place while Walt is missing, right? Or am I blurry episode memories?! UGH
Not to worry. I dissect the hell out of things and it too often pulls me out. I've found BB calming in that respect, because most of the things I would normally pick apart, it seems as though one of the writers had foresight enough to back-door some detail to address it. love this show.
Wait. This all takes place while Walt is missing, right? Or am I blurry episode memories?! UGH
Not blurry. That is the very episode so you're spot on. Makes you realise just how close Hank was to catching Heisenberg the whole time but he was in such denial.
yntwf The lojack thing makes a ton of sense and makes me feel better. :D
Dani8 I agree about the tracking Tuco comment. In fact every time they have a drug dealers whole rap sheet in memory it bothers me a bit. Because, like you said, if they know them so well their surveillance should be turning up Walt already.

Yeh it's pretty annoying now I'm thinking about it, but even more annoying if they did their job and sprung Heisenberg at Tighty Tuco's office block is the show would have been over - and that's my usual wave off at moment's like this, but I do enjoy when fans dissect. Makes me really want to see a writers' room and how they thrash it ll out.
Also, they knew Tio was cartel so you'd think they would know where he and Tuco were living BUT WAIT... half a trillion to track bin Laden didnt work so well and the DEA wouldnt have that much moolah, so yeh, back to giving it a pass.
More importantly, how many shops in ABQ would have that style of hat? They know he wears it so unless he bought it off the net, set up right there. And if they could track Jesse and Emilio's crappy chili P down to a nice, nondescript house in the burbs, why couldnt they have previously found Tio and Tuco. And where is Tuco's 4WD now???
Urgh. This is why I dont personally like to dissect because I can go for hours carving up everything, but I still covet that hat!
Has anyone tried that crystal meth blue candy that a woman makes and sells in ABQ?
LOL she really does look the part.

Ace: "Yes, Satan? Oh! Forgive me! I thought you were someone else!"
Whoa, I fell WAY behind! I've been busy lately and never got a chance to join in on this thread.
I'll just condense my thoughts for Season 1 as a whole since you guys are apparently just over Season 1 right now:
The opening Pilot scene is a work of art--a masterpiece, really. That scene gets you acquainted with the world of Breaking Bad right off the bat. That single scene tells you all you need to know about the show from the get-go. They pull NO punches here: you've got drug dealers and gang members you've got meth, you've got action and excitement, you've got drama, you've got comedy with Walt in his underwear and his pants flying away, you've got the established family element--all right there. It's perfect. It is, without a doubt, my favorite opening scene to any show--right up there with The X-Files Pilot opening scene. Talk about hitting the ground running--wow!
As for the rest of Season 1--they were still finding their sea legs but it's the strongest first season of any show I've seen--right up there with Nip/Tuck, another favorite show of mine.
The first season is rather modest and humble compared to the rest of the show. They take their time, fleshing out the characters and overall arc. Every episode plays out like they just knew they were making television history.
I also love how we don't get "Classic Walt" until the second to last episode of the season. Heisenberg emerges in that scene with Tuco with all wrath and fury. Heisenberg's introduction is literally introduced with a BANG and we witness just how dangerous Walt can be.
The charming RV scenes are great. Pure comedy and drama. You literally feel the fear and tension--as if they could be caught at any moment even though you know they won't.
Everything is established well: Walt is bored with his life. I've discussed Walt at length so I won't get into any more detail about that here but you can see that Hank seems to be the defacto "daddy" in Walt's family and you can see how Walt resents it. Flynn seems to look up to Hank far more than he does to Walt. Hank also takes jabs at Walt and treats him a bit like a high school bully would.
Hank is definitely the "high school football, class clown, jock, school bully, frat boy extraordinaire" type and, like all bullies and "tough guys" he's really compensating for/hiding an inner feeling of weakness. This is made apparent in Season 2 when you see how he handles REAL pressure out in the field and you realize something: this is probably the first time this guy has ever seen any REAL action, ever killed anyone and ever had his life on the line. You see the tough guy facade dissolve away and see a rather weak and almost pathetic man. It's why he always has a loud, vibrant and funny personality--he HAS to. He always feels weak. Always afraid of that danger in the field. He cannot and WILL not allow anyone to see it--except Marie on occasion.
I'm not a Skyler fan at all and don't really feel like discussing her at all right now, so I'll skip this one for now.
Jesse's character is one of tragedy. To me, I've always seen his relationship with his parents as clear as day:
-They are a well-off family of overachievers. For whatever reason, Jesse didn't take to it and rebelled. Jesse was more carefree and didn't want to work as hard as his parents tried to pressure him into doing. They probably nagged him daily to work hard and do his studies. I feel that the pressure from his overachiever parents overwhelmed him and he escaped into a life of rebellion and drugs.
-Jesse inherited his parents' brains but had no drive or motivation in life.
-His parents eventually gave up when it became clear that Jesse was on a road to nowhere and they didn't wish to be dragged down with him.
-They transposed those high expectations to Jesse's younger brother who, unlike Jesse, did apply himself. However, the first signs of the brother maybe feeling overwhelmed by their parents in the same way as Jesse did became apparent when he brought the "skunk weed" home. It showed that the cycle might continue. Jesse may or may not have put a stop to that by taking the pot from his brother.
-Jesse liked his aunt much more than his parents and had a great relationship with her. The parents may have resented the aunt and perhaps even felt that she enabled Jesse's behavior by not being more firm with him. However, as we know from later in the series, Jesse's parental figures in his life that he loves are all people that understand him on a certain level that his real parents never could. They listen to him--indulge in his life. Perhaps Jesse could have turned out differently had his parents taken the time and initiative to understand this other side of Jesse and help him work through whatever pain he felt.
-Jesse loved children and I believe it falls back to his relationship with his parents--Jesse longed for stability in his life and probably felt that his childhood was one of instability. That's why he felt a desire to "rescue" children and hopefully help them escape the same fate as his own.
There's no direct stated proof of any of this, of course, but this is what I believe.
I love this show. From these earlier seasons we can see that Jesse at least at one point in time DID love Walt as a sort of father figure. Unfortunately for Jesse, Walt was too wrapped up in himself to realize that Jesse wanted a connection there.
Walt loved Jesse in his own way and, just like with his family, he hurts the ones he loves the most. He DID love Jesse--he just didn't know how to express it.
The heart and soul of this show is Walt and Jesse's relationship and how neither figure is cut out for the criminal world. It's a reverse journey where Walt finds his dark side and Jesse finds his light side.
Breaking Bad is a work of art. Simple as that.
season 4 halfway through (I think maybe ep 6)
How the hell did Tucker and his lovely meth head friend get the stolen los pollos hermanos bucket that contained the meth?
and why didnt Walt just sell Junior's car himself rather than blowing it up? Sure that wouldnt have been entertaining to watch but really, even in the midst of a midlife crisis are you going to blow a car up rather than recoup your money? Well I guess this is Walt. Great scene, though. And further cemented Sky as 'the bitch mum' for the haters. If I had been Walt I would have said - OK this car is a present to myself for the car wash business and junior can have my lil crap mobile. Problem solved.
I will talk about the three I watched this week in a couple days but I have to say I loooved Skyler giving Walt a taste of his own medicine by just leaving and not saying a word everyday. So much fun to watch Walt squirm and get irritated. The climatic scene between the two of them was fantastic. I remember thinking Walt might tell her the first time I saw that.
Since those participating are flying through I might pick up my pace.

LOL. I thought he was going to tell her as well. It was total Crime and Punishment.
Sorry for flying through. When I start rewatch bingeing I need a smack down.

It's cool. I wanted to go a little slower because I was hoping more Mofos would join. I won't go as fast as you but I can definitely ramp it up a bit.

409.
When she calls up Walt to discuss juniors 16th and says she thinks it's a good idea they buy him a car. At this point everything is still her way or the highway. Might have clenched my teeth hard enough to break one.
I'm sorry I haven't been able to keep up. Seems like a year's worth of events have all decided to hit these last few months.
I'm enjoying all the commentary here though!
Re: destroying the car. I always felt like that was his weak passive-aggressive revolt against his wife's dominance.
Re: destroying the car. I always felt like that was his weak passive-aggressive revolt against his wife's dominance.
Oh yeah absolutely. I'm surprised he didn't hit the roof when she decided to buy another one. The only control he had with the car situation was losing control and killing it.
Rofl. I used to do that with my hair. Any time I felt like I was losing control of life, I'd dye, bleach, or shave it completely. That's back in college though. I've lost most of it with age, so with that outlet no longer a viable option, I've turned to drink!
=D

My ex did that just before exams. He'd start trimming his sideburns or beard and end up with no eyebrows.
"I'm slingin' mad volume and fast stackin' bengies, I can't be all about spellin' and $hit". Gotta love skinny Pete.
Love the beginning of 206 where there is a cockroach on the ground and Jessie picks it up and plays with it. Awesome when you are binging because we just heard Hank talk about stepping on a roach when it comes out from under the fridge. No way I caught that on my first run through the series.
206 is the type of episode that makes me thrilled I am doing this rewatch. I completely forgot about Jessie trying to recoup the money form the meth heads. The whole plot thread with the young boy and the ATM machine is amazing. There is the BB humor but also the episode has an unexpected emotional punch. This is pretty much the beginning of sympathetic Jessie for me. Also when Walter takes quite a turn in my opinion. Wanting Jessie to use violence and then the way he treats Gretchen. Fantastic episode. I know I skipped talking about a few but I am going to try and write about them as I watch. I lose whole episodes in my mind the other way.
206
I skipped that but might give it a go when I finish.
Salud is my next watch (410)

Glad I didn't skip it, I had forgotten it entirely. My first rewatch though. I know you have the series memorized.

I just wasnt up for seeing the kid living alone in filth and you are spot on with it showing Jesse's sympathetic side which I find really heart wrenching, the behaviour of the meth heads, and the constant yelling. Also, the sound of the ATM makes me physically ill. Great episode, though.
And I;m surprised at how many tiny moments I never noticed even as a chronic rewatcher.

I'm sure. I don't think I would have ever caught the true significance of the cockroach moment unless watching 205 and 206 back to back. Of course we don't really need proof Jesse's not a killer but it is still cool to catch that stuff.
Bit off topic, but is BB your favorite show all time? I love it, but I think it is battling The Wire for 4th.
Probably a toss up between BB and BCS - I'd say equal 1st. 2nd place would be Hannibal and Westworld. All 4 shows turned me into a chronic rewatcher like even I could not believe. And they're 4 shows where I just cant watch anything else (show wise) while they're running because I am so entirely focused on them. Other shows just either dont appeal or it exhausts me thinking there's a new episode and I end up dropping them. Cnt really explain it better than that.

I need to check out Hannibal. BCS is great and I don't want to come across as not loving it. When comparing it to the greatest series ever it is missing the character depth and pacing for me. Love that character, I laugh a ton, but I don't know if I will go back to it.
I binged Westworld after it was aired. The pilot is incredible and I loved the last two or three episodes. Everything in between was very so-so for me. I honestly had trouble continuing at points. I think it would have been a great three hour film.
Did you watch Mad Men?
Isnt it great there is so much to choose from these days, and I think half the fun for me is the rabid fandoms who love their favourites so much they want to cuddle them. Another thing for me is getting into the headspace of the showrunners and writers, crew etc. Probably why I rewatch so much so I can focus on one element at a time or all of it at once and make my head explode.
Hannibal has quite a bit of theology thrown in so you might like that - I loved it. The showrunner is a maniac and I love him. He's also a complete movie nerd so there are some beautiful homages, like the bathrooms in The Shining, Geiger's alien, a scene from Cronenberg's Dead Ringers which flipped me out, Peter Greenaway etc and the composer is a genius, plus it's just so stunning to look at. A 3D tapestry painted on velvet (not my words). If you're a fan of the books and/or movies, toss that aside before watching. This is a complete reworking of characters in Fuller's universe. Harris told Martha D he approved. Elessar started watching before going to Vietnam so the thread is still active for if you decide to go ahead. It's a pretty nightmarish show - the sort of nightmare I didn't want to wake up from because it was such a ride.
Lots of comments on imdb WW would have been better as a big screen movie so you're not alone, and same for BCS. For me personally, I just can't fault Villigan and Peter Gould. I think they're brilliant, but the show has been very divisive.
Mad Men I wanted to see but a friend told me the constant smoking on screen would make me ill so I didnt watch it. Damn shame because I love the look of it.

Yeah, there is a ton of smoking. No cannibalism though, every show has its foibles. ;)

LMAO. Hannibal tweeked my culinary skills but also had me starving on hannibal day. They do fast edits from a gruesome crime scene to him in his kitchen and oh my, made me gag a few times.
Oh and keep your ear out for Mads' hilariously evil one liners. There were times we'd have to hit pause because I'd be cracking up. Let me know what you think if you do watch it. Definitely a love it or hate it show.
Another show I loved which really surprised me was The Crown which 2 of my brothers put me onto. Most expensive show to date and it looks it. Sadly I just checked the thread I started on it and I'm all alone in tv show heaven on that one. Really changed my outlook on the royal family.
411 Crawl Space. I dont think this needs any commentary. One of the best endings of any show for me. Still get goosebumps. And Salud - has anyone ever been such a gentleman preparing to throw up!
One tiny nitpick for me just for fun, how did Gustavo's doctor get access to Jesse's blood type? I mean sure he probably had his medical records lifted, but in the real world, how easy would that be? Not important. I just felt like nit picking.
A few into season 5 now... So good!

About to finish Face Off then will try to catch up to you, Sensai. I know it was a perfectly normal reaction but how annoying was Marie in that episode. And every time I see that purple rug I expect someone to Ted over it.

Usually I like purple but too much of any one colour is a turn off, especially in a house. I liked it when she finally wore yellow.
Face Off is great, especially the scene where
he took the baby bag with the bomb in it into the hospital and it got stuck to the elevator door. Bryan does bumbling keystone cop so well
LOL this is so true.

OK off to face the music of the finale with me lil cuppa.
So so good. The music in the show has always really appealed to me but I LOVE the montage in the lab set to the percussion duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. I'm pretty sure another piece of their music was also in season 1. And the final piece is so hauntingly beautiful. I also loved the piece for Gustavo's walk from the car to the building. OMG his henchman was so dmn scary just standing there looking out the window. And I always get a chuckle when the camera is on Gustavo's face and a body part drops from the ceiling behind him
You creepled leedle ratta.
His convo with Skyler on the phone - hello Mr Heisenberg!
OK totally irrelevant nitpick time. The chemist in Mexico said the phenylacetic acid was so easy to make a first year chemist could make it, so why didnt Walt make it? I guess time but I dont know how long it takes to make. Any takers? I'm not bothered by it; just curious. My usual excuse for a nitpick is to always come back to the look. So cool seeing
the axe going into the bees during the montage
Ha, and foreshadowing time 'Vamonos'
Hair raising episode. LOVED what Tio said to Hank. Yeah I get it. I can spell.
One minor whinge - the radio announcer cant pronounce casa tranquila. Whinge over.
Wish I had written down Saul's quotes. Loved the one about if ever he had 2 anal polyps he would name them after the cops.
And yep, Rodrigo y Gabriela is in the pilot. For your enjoyment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDRroYpUf5Q
I love their stuff. Squealed when I heard that in the pilot the first time.
As soon as feeding time at the zoo is over diving in to season 5. Batteries, Bitch!!!
Oh no...final season. :bawling: Might have to rewtch BCS again.

He really needed that to finally confirm he wasnt the loser everyone thought he was.
This was the other time. Standing up to that chemist was beautiful
http://img2.thejournal.ie/inline/1030886/original/?width=450&version=1030886
And lol when he was yelling with abandon in the car and Mike just turned to him and yelled to SHUDDUP. Party pooper.
Oh one more thing - Sky's convo with turdy Ted. Helloo Mrs Heisenberg. Wow what an instant change from distressed housewife to utter sociopath. Had to be done but dayum, that was some fine acting by Anna.
208 Really fun episode with lots of comedy. love Saul's introduction. Saul showing Walt how to be a real criminal is really fun, "your Fredo". Also love Walt pulling up next to Hank on the stakeout. Walt clearly wanting to kill Badger rather than deal with any of the drama is also pretty great. Great one.

209 Excellent episode but not really much to say. Another huge lie from Walt that always bites him in the butt. Best cooking sequence of the show so far. I love how when things go bad Walt and Jessie go straight for each other's throat. Never any personal responsibility from those two. Makes their relationship very entertaining.
Dead Freight
Still pulse pounding, even though I had already seen it. Fantastic episode.

That's next for me. I always love it. meth Damon is such a psychopath.
I forgot 504.
I remember the car scene had people going off their nut about product placement. I dont get what the problem is. They also went off their nut about the dubstep. Seemed to suit the 51 year old going through a midlife crisis to me. I didnt even know what dubstep was..
So funny he bought 2 new cars and left his wife driving that old clunker.
Oh and can you just walk into a car yard and drive out with a car? Here it takes about a week for plates. Assuming those 2 cars were new, not second hand. I've never bought a second hand car from a yard so dont know if you can drive straight out.

Y'all are flying by me like an F22 with this sh*t man....
Anyways, FYI, I'm at 2.2 right now, just started season 2 after a long break cause of vaca and other stuff. I probably won't catch up to the quickest, but now the ball is rolling and I'll get to a pretty good speed. Watch out here I come.

Patience is not my middle name, MM. I have a serious crystal problem, or maybe it's just a Heisenberg problem. I really needed to see more of the hat...and Lydia.

LOL Lydia is so high strung and neurotic. "4 DEA agents barged into my office screaming and yelling at me" ROFL. I'm sure she believed that.
Anyone here speak German? Just wonderng what that was all about.
Dead Freight
Still pulse pounding, even though I had already seen it. Fantastic episode.
Oh yes. The suspense in that was so good and stands up every rewatch.
Anyone else think Marie overreacted just a tad to finding out about the affair? I mean she was on the brink of tears. C'Mon now. They were separated at the time. And lol at Hank thinking she was talking about Walt.
Nitpick time - how on earth can Marie look after Holly when she has a full time job? And why would Sky stay in the house? I would have moved in with Marie and Hank as well but continue working at the car wash. I just would have said I needed some head space away from here for a bit.

I got 5 episodes into season 2 yesterday... might continue when I get home.
Just like with season 1, and as Yoda mentioned about that, season 2 shoots just as rapidly into the action as the pilot. I mean, the first two episodes are strimmed from fat and the fact that they deal with, interact, get kidnapped and "kill" Tuco off within two episodes is just insane!
And as we know, the show isn't one to die down completely, like some shows did after ballsy moves. BB is so turbo-charged. I mean, these first 5 episodes has had Walt and Jesse through so much it's crazy!
And I remember not really digging the "Down" episode (and the title was really dead on), but this time I liked it more. It's a very personal, emotional, deep episode. It's all about inner turmoil. Not a pleasant episode to sit through. But that doesn't make it a bad one... I guess it also suffers from the fact that it's the "first episode" to really deal with the aftereffects of Walt's and Jesse's whereabouts. It's very much a transition episode as well.
Anyways, so fun being back for the third time in this BB universe! The series is so well flowing too. Like one long movie.

Down was quite the downer. Talk about hitting rock bottom. He couldnt cop a break.
For the record, our friends quit watching after Down. I guess it was too much of a downer for them!
Their loss!

Yeah, I mean, if you weren't feeling the show before 'Down', it's not exactly the episode that will fill you with happiness and make you want to continue, I guess. :D

hellz-yeah, we can!
Either finance through the dealership (and get bent over a desk without dinner by the financial officer), or come in pre-approved from a third-party lender with better rates like a credit union. Once you sign that dotted line, they don't care. Your problem, your debt.
The dealer will give you a temp paper car tag that's good for like 30 days. In that time, you find your way to your county tag licensing department and pay your taxes/fees/whatever and they hand over a flat sheet of metal with a fancy reflective sticker and done. Until the next year when you have to buy another fancy reflective sticker.
I don't mean to blab. Just end of day jitters before I sign off. This is my unwinding.
meow?

Blab as much as you want. I was curious if you could buy and drive a new car from a lot. His were leases and I've never leased either so not sure what the deal is here without plates.
Our rego stickers were done away with a few years ago. Good thing too because the stupid things either wouldnt stick or would not come off without a razor and it would wreck the tinting.
Thanks for your answer.
I'm lucky in that the state I live does not require window tags. Or inspections. Soooo easy compared to other states that require yearly inspections and Spackle up your windows with compliance stickers. I'm kind of OCD so that would drive me insane, seeing daily a crooked sticker some mechanic just haphazardly slapped on, somewhere near the corner of the windshield. UGH I'm twitching just thinking about it. >=\

We have yearly inspections after a car is 3 years old or so, but the mechanics dont place the sticker. 'My guys' as Mike would say, are just down the road, super nice, and the inspection only takes 15 minutes if I get it in there at 7am which is no biggy for me. Multiple regi stickers on the windshield were never allowed, though. We had to take the previous year's sticker off.
I still dont quite understand why Walt gave his lil shtbox to the car repair guy for 50 bucks.
Ooh just saw this on wiki and had never heard this about Dean Norris in season 5
Dean Norris had asked Gilligan to kill off Hank during the first half of the season after being cast in a comedy pilot. However, Gilligan declined his request, citing the importance of Hank in the final eight episodes
Must have been pretty good dough if he wanted to dump BrBa for a comedy.
http://o.canada.com/entertainment/breaking-bads-dean-norris-asked-series-creator-to-kill-his-character-off
Finished with season 2. Greatness all around except for the plane crash. I don't think it was so glaring first time through but it feels completely unnecessary this time. Especially co considering the bar meet with Jane's dad. We need a couple more degrees of separation please Vince.
Walt watching Jane die is one of the most chilling scenes in the history of television. Boy oh boy did I hate watching Jessie self-destruct in this season.
I have to say I remember Walt as being more sympathetic. Maybe knowing where he goes changes how I watch. I feel like I was much more back and forth on him in early seasons first time around. His stand off with Hank over the tequila was brutal. I get it, Hank is a total bro, but still, be the adult. Everything Walt does annoys the crap out of me.

Yep, pretty much, and it gets worse. I'm up to 510 and yeh, even wtching him shave his head makes me want to punch him in the face, but I still find him so compelling.

I forgot to mention when I said how much I hate Walt the juxtaposition between him and Gus at that first meeting. I love Walt's face when Gus says "you are not like me, you are careless". Walt so badly wants to be the kingpin but Gus outclasses him in every way. Makes me wish I was going to get to see Walt blown up later on. :D
I love Gus. Maybe my favorite antagonist in any show. His first meeting with Hank is a fantastic scene.

We're on the same page. I love Gustavo (it;s GUSTAVO. I'M VERY MUCH A PEDANT ABOUT THIS. GUSTAVO NOT GUS! Only kidding. I just love playing with this He Is Not Called Gus - like when someone abbreviates my name in the real world) nd totally agree with your comment about Walt. All the way through he keeps reacting to people not thinking he's kingpin. I wanted to comment on this in a recent episode but I stupidly jumped so far ahead I now feel in spoiler territory. Will join in when you guys get to season 5 on those points. I get very Lydia about spoilers, even if you have seen it before. *shakily reaches for stevia*
Hey random thought. Does anyone here use stevia? I'm not a sugary type so never tried it. Does it actually taste like sugar?
I use Truvia, which is very good.

I was thinking of you yesterday when I read this bizarre rant by an atheist about the christian themes in Breaking Bad. Was going to link it for discussion but I think my head exploded.
I've got one that isnt spoilery. Jesse walks into the carwash and Skyler looks at him with that WTF is this? He nonchalantly nods his head trying to be cool and says 'Vamonos'. She says 'I wish'. LOL! Gets me every time.
One more kind of not spoilery but have to mention now or I'll forget
511 - the first time Walt lies and it's believable rather than clownish. Great scene. What a horrible bastard.
And newbie watches might want to skip this bit.
Was his cancer really back or did he just use that to play the victim card with Hank and Junior? I was never convinced about that.

Hope you guys are not over with the rewatch yet. I'm restarting.
Made another mistake of watching 102 & 103 ( Cat's in the Bag, And the Bag's in the River) while eating dinner. When that mix of smoking acid and gravy flesh melted into the floor and fell through, then Walt spent hours to "spoon it up", I died inside.
Oh I hate Marie, or whatever her name, the sister of Skyler. Stupid, nosy, bug eyed b*tch.

Oh I hate Marie, or whatever her name, the sister of Skyler. Stupid, nosy, bug eyed b*tch.
LOL. I hope you werent eating soup, El.
And yes, Marie can be highly irritating.
I finished last night but will stick around for chat. There are two episodes I skipped so I'll try to have a rewatch.

Got to "4 Days Out" from season 2. Great little episode.
And I still love how the entirety of Breaking Bad is basically Jesse's chemistry exam. How Walt failed him and he learns throughout until he reaches near perfect purity by himself in season 5 and "graduate". And the chemistry between Walt and Jesse is so great and I love how the undertones of a son and dad relationship are there as well and how they keep it subtle without making it a happy thing in the end of the series as well...
Anyways, I'm talking so much ahead here... on to finish season 2!
And...done.
Second time through the series, and it was a blast. Season 5 is certainly the best of the bunch, being pretty much flawless from start to finish.

A robot?
Fantastic episode but so cringeworthy at the same time. As in painful to watch those two. Nicely summed up about them, though. Will be interesting to see how you compare that relationship with the Walt - Meth Damon relationship.
Woo Sensai. It was an amazing season.

I were eating soup, Dani
Agree about the Walt - Jesse relationship. In S1 Jesse was so dumb sometimes I want to punch his face and kick his stomach. But then, I couldn't believe it when Walt stood up for Jesse and demand that crazy dog Tuco for 50 grands.
Btw, Tuco was a d*ck.

I feel your pain, El. That bath scene was pretty damn horrendous.
Jesse is street smart but uneducated, and Walt is a genius but equally dumb and clumsy at times. These two are utter clowns but I love their pairing so much. There is one scene you will see and once you get to that episode I'll bring it up. I so wanted to see them hug.

But in the pilot, ep 101 & 102, Jesse is not that street smart. His big mouth got everyone into trouble. Originally I despised him. Then came the drama scene with his family when he covered up for his little bro. That's cool.
Then, when he suited up for a job interview, I was like: wow, the actor was actually handsome!

lol that will warm my heart. I can't stand dumb principal character.
Very curious to see what happened between Walt and Elliot, and what's that Gray Matter was about so that a chemist like Elliot could become that rich and powerful. What happened that made Walt rather doing drug than accepting their money.
What happened that made Walt rather doing drug than accepting their money.
Hubris. It's what the whole show is about IMO.
Yup. Walt has so many chances to get out. He keeps saying he did what he had to, but he had options...the others just involved him having to swallow a little pride. It won't be the last time, either.
Once you internalize that pride is Walt's defining characteristic, a lot of the decisions he makes later are not only not surprising, but even a little predictable. Without getting spoilery, there's a moment a few seasons down the line where he has a similar chance to pull back, rather than press forward, and I turned to my wife and said with total certainty what he was going to do. Which is more to the writers' credit than mine, because they'd done a good job of illustrating what Walt's soul is like, deep down, so many times before.

And iso painful to watch. I lost track of how many times I yelled at the screen to WALK AWAY NOW!!! It got to hair pulling territory.

So you spoiled the show and the actions that Walt took out of pride... because of pride? :D
Do you ever take pleasure in your own intelligence is a question that no longer needs to be answered. You are simply spoiling every show and every movie you and your wife ever watches together. :p it must be hell for the wife.... like living with social media in its psychical form... Game of Thrones spoilers everywhere man!

Hehe. Sort of? The show really lets those big moments hang in the air, and someone watching them could easily realize that this is an either/or decision for him. And even though this is stuff I said while watching the first time, posting it now, people know I'm saying it with the benefit of hindsight, too, so it might tip them off.
Actually, I'm not even sure: is everyone in this thread rewatching? Safe to discuss foreshadowing assuming everyone has seen the end?

IT IS NEVER ENOUGH. PLEASE VALIDATE ME MORE. The other show you're thinking of is Trial & Error, yeah? My wife really figured that one out early. We will not rest, as a couple, until we have spoiled everyone's enjoyment of everything.
Anyway, I'm lucky in that we both like literally pausing certain shows and throwing out theories. If I'd married someone who hated that...it would be difficult. Luckily we both find it enhances the viewing experience.

El said before going on holiday that people should just post what they want and she'll forget anyway but you know me, I freak out if I think I've posted a spoiler. My brother still wont forgive our sister for dropping a clanger back in the early days of GoT.
Eh speaking of my bro, right from the pilot we would say how painful it was watching these two clowns constantly making bad judgment calls. So funny how invested you can get in characters. Almost crying: Why did he do that? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just spoiler tag, Yods. I want to read what you have to sy

I don't care, y'all can spoil all you want. That's what I'll do at least. So be it.
C'Mon Yoda. What's your foreshadowing? You know I just need to make fun of that word, so spill.
Oh, I just meant...
...the moment with Gus in the desert, where he basically says "we're done." But he doesn't ask Walt, he tells him, and he's on his knees. This is right after Walt freaked out about his family being threatened, and not being able to find a way out. And then he's given one, and he throws it back in his face. I think the line was "Or else what?" That was the moment I was referring to earlier,
sans specifics.

Don't let me spoil your essays. Thank you Yoda, Dani & Meditation for the caution, you don't need to use spoiler tags, god bless your gentle souls. As I said, your spoilers don't affect me, because:
- I know what to read and what to skip, unless you use Cap and red font. My reading skill is superb ;)
- I have my own judgement about characters and often ignore what others said before that.
Otherwise I wouldn't have jumped into the Rewatching thread.

Back to BreBad, I'm on S2.
Turn out I didn't hate Skyler at all. She hasn't (yet) done anything that's over a wife's range, for my knowledge of real life wives so far. Over-imposing, stalking, forceful hand job,... none of that is beyond wives. Not that I desire such wives in my life. I actually felt very bad for her. The moment when she knew Walt had cancer, or when Walt disappeared. Poor woman.
And she was hilarious I enjoyed her scenes so much. For example the family talking scene with the frigging Talking Pillow
Chuck from BCSaul couldn't compare to her. A wife is entitled to have a little control over a man's life (sorry guys), but a bro is not.
Now I'll go back to page 1 to see what you said about S1.
Elessar, what do you think of the montages? The 'nothing ever happens and this is not breaking bad' whiners on the BCS board constantly complained about the Saul montages, but after my recent rewatch I felt the breaking bad montages were more frequent and even longer. I love them and dont really understand the complaints.
Elessar
08-02-17, 05:42 PM
I love the montages in BreBa, as well as everything else in the show. It's really well-rounded. The composition, the music, the angle in the montages are all great and none are overdue. As for BCS I don't remember much about montages because perhaps I fastforwarded many of them. BCS has one disadvantage: it relied much on BreBa. For newcomers like me, some characters showed up for no real purpose and some scenes held no interest. But for the 'nothing ever happens' whines I don't agree, it's just a very different kind of show.
===
The beginning of S2.
How dare Walt and Jesse toy with Don Hector?! The terrifying Senor Hector from BCS.
I almost wished they would pay for it. And they certainly did.
Just when I started to forgive Jesse, he acted so dumb again. What's with the "chili powder" aka ricin oil? He can't even keep his big mouth shut for a second. All the people he hang out with seemed dumb too. I don't know how Walt fell into that rabbit hole.

Ep 206 or 7, not sure.
I would think of Walt's path down as a mad scientist syndrome. He got talent & ambition but was sidelined in life and "surpassed by all of his friends" (his words). At some moment that ambition will wake up. It's only intensified by his end-of-life situation: it's now or never. Nobody forced his hand, since the beginning. It was all him, with a little nudge from the lung.
We have seen enough of mad physicists or IT-ist on screen, who can bring terrible destruction to the world by their invention. A mad chemist now is only logical.
I kinda like Hank. He's a funny bro in law, but he could be a deadly enemy.
PS. The scene of Tuco making burritos gave me mouthgasm.
PS. Reread what @seanc (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=75240) said, the bathtub is the most memorable moment in BB for me too.
PS. What about the pizza hitting the roof that you mentioned? I seemed to miss that scene?

Ep 207& 8
Oh yes, Saul! Almost forgot about him. That first scene of Saul that I had watched out of context, now it makes more sense. It's terrific to see Saul and Heisenberg head to head. Then Mike! Then Gus! I hadn't know that this character was important when I watched BCS, but I kinda like him, much more than the Salamanca gang.
Sorry about that girl dying in her sleep, but actually I didn't feel any sorry for her. I'm so sorry for the father, and the hundreds of people died because of that.
Jesse is still as dumb as ever. First the battery accident (I wanted to wreck his neck), then him trying to shove his face in front of Jane's father. Jesus, didn't every textbook say Not to do that?
Then, he let Jane speak for him in front of Walt. He let Jane drag him into the heroin thing. I don't know if I could forgive this character but right now he's a piece of garbage. I don't understand how Walt could feel fatherly towards him and spend too much time for him while forgetting his true 2 children at home.
right now he's a piece of garbage.
That's what people made him think his whole life so

Oh, I didn't mean he's a piece of garbage as a human being. I meant it as a screen character. Til now his principal role in the serie is to slow Walt down, so that Walt does not move too fast ahead in his criminal path. I just don't like this shoved-in stupidness. I'd given Jesse the benefit of doubt, but now at ep 306 he didn't show any sign of improving. My patience was stretched thin, man. After his girlfriend died (and he really loved her in a best way, I gave you that), he went through some serious self-reflection period, and I thought he might change after that. Hell no..
About the people around him treating him like trash, I agree with you on that. I will not abandon him like his parents did. Even if it'll take me 10 years, 20 years or all of my life, I'll keep trying.
LOL El. I just wanted to post that gif. I love that you're seeing Jesse for the first time. He was a huge dick; totally irresponsible, and it ripped my heart out when his mother turned on him but she had to. For me all the characters in this are all about human frailty and I ask myself if I would like them in real life if I came across them. Jesse - well I dont know any meth heads but I have had friendships with people sort of like him and kept giving them pass after pass until finally you just have to give them the big flick until they pull their head out of their ass. I'm looking forward to see if you change your mind down the track.

This. I'm totally on Jesse's side when he had an in-depth conversation with Jane about why Georgia O'Keeffe had to paint that "door" 20 times and it didn't look like a vagina at all. About to sum up my thoughts about modern art
(Not that I have seen Georgia O'Keeffe.)

I'm at the beginning of S4.
My favorite scenes remains ones of Walt facing Gus. 2 big heads and you just want them to crush each other very, very hard. Oh, don't think dirty.
And any scene with Saul. He's a gold mine. It's amazing that the character feels the same as the Jimmy in BCS, even though the 2 shows have very different tone. Even though his character has changed a lot. It's not an easy thing to achieve. For example, the Gandalf in The Hobbit feels quite different from the Gandalf in The LOTR.

Jesse is still a dragging. He was there just so Walt can rescue him. I don't need 45 mins screen time of Jesse partying and hallowing only to show that he feels empty inside. Holy, if that's a drug party looks like, it's kinda a boring party with bad music.

I am two episodes into season 4. 3 was good but definitely a step down from the first two for me. Feels like a reset in the story and maybe that was needed but there are a ton of conveniences. That's usually what happens to my brain when something is plot driven instead of character driven, I start noticing the conveniences. Pains me to say it too because I am such a Gus fan. The twins really bothered me this watch. I don't like those characters at all. On the plus side we got a lot of Mike and Saul and that is damn entertaining.

I'm at 403. Good work from Skyler negotiating the car wash. I'll do exacly like her if I'm in my right mind (which I never am). Funny how Walt is still naive when it comes to negotiating prices, though he's in the black market for a long while.

Tsk tsk they were plodding of killing Gus. I hope not. Gus is my favorite character. Walt can't keep killing anyone stood on his way. He wouldn't find a drug lord more reasonable than Gus. And explain to me again, why Walt had to feel parenthood toward that dumbstick Jesse and babysit him all the time? I just don't like babysitter movies, damn that Despicable Me and all.
So glad to see Hank back, still humorous and even sharper. Hank vs. Gus might be my new couple.

Jesse did something cool, finally. I'd waited forever for this moment. Yayyyy when he stood up for Walt, and then cooked a batch of 96% crystals, then put the cartel chemist back into his place. Seems like Jesse really needed to get out of Walt's parenthood to be able to grow up.
That Ted Beneke was such a loser. He's my new hate. Not Jesse anymore, not Skyler (I enjoyed her scenes, especially the little show in front of the auditor. She got quite an imaginative mind.)
