Welcome to the 10th Hall of Fame!
I'm honored to be your host for this momentous occasion!
It's been three years since the first HoF took place, since then the HoFs have become something very special...They're an ongoing process where a group of people come together and share their enthusiasm for movies, how cool is that!
Procedure:
Everyone watches the nominated movies and will discuss them in this thread. You need to write at least a short paragraph about your thoughts on each movie, after you watch it. Part of the process is discussion of the movies as a group.
Any film under 220 minutes can be nominated, except for previous Hof winners. PM your nominations to me and include: film title, director, year of release...and a short write-up of why you nominated it (optional). Keep your nomination a secret until the unveiling of the films.
Dropouts: Don't join if you don't intend to watch all the films. It's wrong to join and make people spend their time watching your movie, only to drop out when you get bored or your movie gets poor reviews. If you can't finish this, don't join...Members who don't finish will be disqualified and their movie nomination removed from the Hof. Please make sure you have the time to complete this.
Now on to the Fun!
The deadline to watch the movies and PM me a ranked voting list is August 31, midnight Pacific Standard Time. I don't plan on extending the deadline, so that gives us 67 days to watch the movies.
Links to members write ups/reviews of the nominations.

The Movie Nominations for the 10th HoF
The Empire Strikes Back (1980, Irvin Kishner)
nominated by Seanc
http://www.filmovita.com/wp-content/uploads/star-wars-empire-strikes-back-poster.jpg
Time for one of the greatest trilogy ever to be nominated. I have always loved Star Wars and always will. Objectively this is the best of the bunch. Better place high you nerfherders...Seanc
The Lucky Ones (2008, Neil Burger)
nominated by Rauldc14

Not to be confused with that goofy Zac Strong movie. I love the lead performances in this film. It's an inspiring funny film fun of adventure with a touch of reality that hit home for me. I really thought McAdams, Pena, and Robbins were all great. I don't usually nominate something like this but I enjoy the movie a lot and am curious on everybody's thoughts...Rauldc
East of Eden (1955, Elia Kazan)

This was one of my biggest surprises while watching 60's movies for that particular countdown. It's surprisingly entertaining and I think everyone will enjoy it...Cricket
Amour (2012, Michael Haneke)

My Man Godfrey (1936, Gregory La Cava)
nominated by SilentVamp

Considering what my past two general HoF nominations were, I decided to go for something "lighter" in tone this time around. Last time I nominated my favorite film of the 1940's. That helped me to decide to now nominate my favorite film from the 1930's. That would also make "My Man Godfrey" one of my all-time favorite comedies, of course. It may seem like a typical screwball comedy, but underneath it all, there is a serious element to it - if you pay close enough...SilentVamp
Blade Runner (1982, Ridley Scott)

The movie is about a sixteen year old Estonian girl who is left by her mother. When her new boyfriend promises her a new and better life in Sweden she goes with him. She soon realizes that things wont go as promised.
I recommend this movie because is based on a true story, and unfortunately the lives of many other girls as well. This is a problem that wont go away until we all unite and banish prostitution and human trafficking, sadly I don't see it happening...Topsy
Ugetsu (1953, Kenji Mizoguchi)
nominated by Friendly Mushroom
http://br.web.img3.acsta.net/medias/nmedia/18/92/60/87/20208603.jpg
This film almost has an incomparable important place in my heart. Though the film by itself is wonderful, the main reason why this film is so special to me is because it was the last movie I watched with my dog Skippy by my side. He would die in his sleep that night at age 11. (April 10, 2016)
I will always associate this grand movie with my beloved dog and I wanted to share with you my love for Skippy by nominating this.
You will be missed Skippy...Friendly Mushroom

Everyone is Welcomed to Join!....But first time members need to understand that everyone who joins promises to watch every single movie that is nominated by the other members. Plus they write their thoughts about the movies after watching them.
Then after about 4 months time everyone sends in a ranked voting list. We give 1 week to watch 1 movie. But the movies can be watched faster if someone wants to.
Some of the films might be old black and white films and more obscure films, some are hard to find and some type of online streaming is usually needed.
I'm not trying to discourage anyone, as everyone is welcomed! and we were all new at one time....but every time we do a Movie Hall of Fame, new members join and often end up quitting. I think it's because they don't understand the rules, that's why I tried to explain them in detail.

I completely understand,it must frustrating when people drop out.
i figured this was a great opportunity to get to know movies i usually wouldnt. i might be in trouble if its movies thats difficult to find though- as theres not a big selection of older, lesser known,movies-i dont mind bying dvds-but bying from foreign sites usually takes a long time to arrive.

I don't right now. They only offer some films through Netflix DVD? I just assumed that whatever was available that way would be available to anyone who had access to a variety of DVD's (as in the library, basically).
I only had to pay for "Beauty Day" and "Lady Killer". I had to pay for LK twice (long story), but neither one cost too much.

GBG should join us :)
I would love to, but my schedule won't allow it right now. We've been having major power problems at my co-op, and I think our entire co-op is running on a generator right now, so I've been unable to use my computer during the day, and I've been doing my daytime work at night. (This has been a terrible month for us. :()
I'm going to try to watch the movies if I can, and join in on the discussions if possible, but until they figure out what's going on here, (a manhole exploded about a week ago, and they still haven't found the cause of it), I can't guarantee finishing the HoF, and I don't want to become a dropout.
Hopefully we'll be up and running again soon, and if possible, I'm planning to join the upcoming Noir HoF.

I PMed Miss Vicky some time ago and personally invited her to the 10th. And I only directly PMed a very few people. My reason was like what Raul said, I wanted more interaction and more opinions, and thought MV would help with that.
It seems in the last few Hofs people have stopped interacting and debating the movies. I mean, we all do a write up (well not all of us) and only occasional does a good healthy discussion start up. I read all of the old Hofs and they use to be much more lively with members directly talking to each other. I would like to see that happen again, that's why I join Hofs to have some meaningful discussion, or just fun talk too.

True. I think that was about the only discussion we had.
Anyways, that's why I don't join. Not because I don't want discussion, but because I know I probably can't watch all the films let alone discuss and review them. I love the HoFs, but they need proper attention if I would do one again.
I hope this HoF will have some proper discussions - or else it's the host's fault. :p

It's nice that eveyone looks at each others favorites, but when they comment about it and make me realize they saw my favorites I feel so ashamed :(, not with Leagally Blonde 2 to be honest, this movie makes me proud to be a strong independent women.
I should rewatch it, what kind of person decide a movie is his favorite and doesn't rewatch it every month.
And thanks MM! It's awesome when you see someone that likes the movie you like too

Also, just so you all know, I will be leaving for Notre Dame's Film Production track for Summer Scholars (http://precollege.nd.edu/summer-scholars/) on Saturday so I won't be posting, nor watching the nominated films, until I get back on July 10th. Out of a lot of applicants, they only took 20 for each track. I just can't wait until this and show you the film I will be making! :)

I'm planning on double majoring in film and history when I go to college in 2017. Notre Dame is the best school I visited and though I made it into this summer track, I'm still borderline to get in the college with my ACT of a 32. Hopefully I will get a higher score when my third attempt is posted on the ACT website. Other colleges I'm considering are Vanderbilt (another reach school), Belmont, Miami of Ohio, OSU and Rochester. I'm also going to visit Vassar as my final college visit a week after I get back from ND.
Thanks for the encouragement Sean!
Rochester is very near my old stomping grounds. I worked at a camp two summers that was for Rochester kids, it was right outside the city. I was close to going to Brockport, a girl I was dating went there. Good luck wherever college takes you. Sounds like you have lots of opportunity.
Just realized I am ignorant and you probably meant Rochester, OH. So forget my rant, except for the good luck part. ;)

Just posting to say that i'll join now officially as i said i would Citizen. Use the nom i sent. I was briefly thinking about nominating Sweet Sixteen again (i was thinking about it again not saying i have nominated it before just to clarify since i haven't) but the slang and accents would be too much for some i imagine and it isn't easy to find english subtitled since it is in english obviously. I used Topsy as my guinea pig in the TV Tournament thread by showing her the trailer, she didn't seem to have a big problem understanding it and actually said that she is going to watch it anyway. Still i know Cricket had problems when he tried it as well as someone else. Everyone should watch it anyway, pretty sure Citizen just told me he won't be accepting lists from people who haven't seen Sweet Sixteen :p

This film almost has an incomparable important place in my heart. Though the film by itself is wonderful, the main reason why this film is so special to me is because it was the last movie I watched with my dog Skippy by my side. He would die in his sleep that night at age 11. (April 10, 2016)
I will always associate this grand movie with my beloved dog and I wanted to share with you my love for Skippy by nominating this.

Along with my nom i've seen Empire and Blade Runner. Not a fan of Blade Runner, i think it is very well made it just isn't something i am able to get into. Love Empire, my favourite Star Wars film. All three of those are fresh in my mind so i only really have to watch 7, but i might re watch them anyway.
Glad to see two 50's films, been meaning to watch something from Mizoguchi for ages. Also glad to see Amour nominated, only seen Funny Games (the original) from Haneke so far.

I haven't see The Empire Strikes Back in many years. I absolutely loved it when I was younger, and I think I'll take this opportunity to watch the entire trilogy again.
Never head of The Lucky Ones; it sounds like something I could watch with my wife.
Saw East of Eden recently; it's a great story.
Haven't seen Amour, but I'm always happy to watch a best picture winner.
Haven't seen My Man Godfrey, but I'm well aware of its existence.
I've never been a huge fan of Blade Runner, but I've liked it more every time I've watched it.
Lilya 4-Ever was already on my watchlist so I'm very happy to see it nominated.
Saw Ugetsu recently, another great Japanese movie from that era.
I loved Dead Man's Shoes, and it has one of my all time favorite scenes.
Nice variety!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Empire Strikes Back, I haven't seen this one in over 20 years. I loved all of the first 3 Star Wars films, and I'm going to watch them all again. I have Star Wars coming soon.
The Lucky Ones, never heard of it, but it sounds like I might like it.
East of Eden, my nomination, I never hear anyone talking of this movie here. I found it to be powerful and you can't go wrong with a John Steinbeck story directed by one of the greatest directors Elia Kazan. I thought James Dean owned this role and so did Steinback who said "Dean is Cal!". I really like Julie Harris in this too.
Cul-De-Sac, this is interesting as Roman Polanski is underseen, at least I don't here much talk about him here.
Amour, I've liked Neiba's past nominations so I'm looking forward to this one.
My Man Godfrey, I love this one, Carol Lombard is one of the most talented comedians to grace the big screen. This would be her big break out film. I'm glad to see this nominated.
Blade Runner, oh yeah! If I made a Top 100 list I know where this film goes. I watched this probably half a dozen times when it first came out in 1982. There's 5 different cuts of this film, with the last cut called The Final Cut being the most popular, the original version is called The Theatrical Release...Thursday said it didn't matter which version you guys watch. But when you post your thoughts it would be good to mention which cut of Blade Runner you just seen.
Lilya 4-Ever, I've very interested in this film, especially as I can tell it's a very personal film for Topsy
Ugetsu, So far I've enjoyed most of the 1950s Japanese films I watched.
Dead Man's Shoes, never heard of this one either, it sounds interesting and fun.

Lots of interesting choices here, looks like a great line-up. Here's my first thoughts...
Empire Strikes Back - probably my fav Star Wars film, though the franchise never really appealed to me. I understand the love for it, but I'm not crazy about it myself. But Empire is the best of the bunch imo.
The Lucky Ones - don't think I have even heard of this. Should be interesting...
East of Eden - just watched this not too long ago. Really solid film, a good story with great cinematography and amazing acting by Dean. Unfortunately there are things that keeps this from being truly great. But a good nom, definitely.
Cul-De-Sac - I need to see more Polanski, so there we go. And this actually sounds pretty good, I'll look forward to it.
Amour - this was my first Haneke and I recently watched Caché, which would have prepared me for his style. But with Amour I was not prepared and the ending left me speechless and numb. I like how this guy takes on cinema and I wouldn't mind watching this again.
My Man Godfrey - never heard of it but it sounds good.
Blade Runner - as Camo (?) mentioned Blade Runner is really well made but it has never quite caught my attention the way I wanted it to. I wrote a detailed review of it that I'm to lazy to link to now, but that one pretty much explained it as I remember...
Lilya 4-Ever - sounds amazing and it's scandinavian. I might look forward to this out of all the noms...
Ugetsu - "just when you thought it was safe to go back in the HoFs..." dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun... This was actually on my watchlist, I just realized, so yeah, I will be anticipating this.
Dead Man's Shoes - also on my watchlist, sounds really good too.
I`ll be completely honest and say that i dont know much about directors and people behind the scenes unless they are very well know.so thats a bit of a coincidence.
But i love movies with that "independent movie" feel-movies that seem real. fish tank for example is another movie i really like if youve seen it.
so since thats the style he seems to be going for,i would actually say that yes he is
fish tank for example is another movie i really like if youve seen it.
I have good movie. I think Andrea Arnold's film Red Road is a lot better though.
Also what i said above is why i wanted to see sweet sixteen aswell :) it seemed to be in the style i love.
Just saw the trailer for red road- im definitly going to watch it.
what is netflix dvd though? never heard of it before i came on here...you can order dvds through netflix? a regular account?

Though Netflix you sign up to get a DVD through the mail. When you send it back they send the next on the list. $7.99 for one DVD here. You can get up to three at a time, I believe that is $14.99 per month.

Interesting nominations. One of them I'd contemplated nominating awhile ago (long before this HoF), but I decided against doing so for a couple of reasons. So good for the person who decided to take a chance! :) I will keep which one that is a secret. For now, at least. :)
Anyway, we all know I will be done with this LONG before the deadline (it just takes me another 6 weeks to say something about them :D). And my prediction is that I will have all of them done within 3 weeks - at the most.
I will probably start with "Lilya" and "Dead Man's Shoes" sometime within the next couple of days because I can't obtain them in any way except for online. And that means I have to look at the computer screen for an extended period of time. That isn't good for my eyes. So that is why it is best that I get them watched first.
I have to go to the library on Thursday. The library that I am going to has 5 of the movies. And if nobody else gets to them first, I will be taking them home with me this week. So they will be watched within the week - they have to be because this library never lets you renew DVD's from them.
I had to request one of them. There are two copies available, and one of them is downtown. I am just hoping that isn't the one they are going to send me because requests take forever from there.
Finally, I own 2 of these. I could just put those two off for awhile. That way I can drag it out a little still. Of course, the one I just watched in December, but I will probably watch it again.
I don't know if the definite plan is to watch same movie when everyone else does, but I will be well prepared by the time the conversations come up because I will have them all watched already. :) Except if that one comes from downtown - I probably won't get that one until after the deadline!

I updated the first post with this:
The deadline to watch the movies and PM me a ranked voting list is August 31, midnight Pacific Standard Time. I don't plan on extending the deadline, so that gives us 67 days to watch the movies.
If you've recently watched one of the nominated films or have seen it a number of times and remember it well, then you don't have to rewatch it. That was Godoggo's old rule, and it's a good one, so I'll stick with it:)
are we supposed to write our thoughts on the movies right after we watch them or at the end when we`ve seen them all?

Right away
I`ll start off with
though obviously the movie is graphic i think it could have gone even further, for example the part where she tries to run away and he catches her. Also when shes with her clients-the reason why i think so is to show the obvious humiliation she has to go through. Also i wish the movie would have ended with her jumping of the bridge and left out the part after. i see how they`re trying to make us feel abit better about it-but i dont really think we really should feel better about it.
Im excited to see what others think of it :)

I'm surprised to see Blade Runner in another HoF so soon. If I remember correctly, it was nominated in the Sci-Fi HoF last year, but it became ineligible when the person who nominated it didn't send in a list. I think it had a very good chance to win if that person hadn't dropped out.

I have seen only two of these, Blade Runner and The Empire Strikes Back (which I also considered nominating!).
I didn't nominate any specific version of Blade Runner, please watch whatever you prefer/haven't seen yet/can most easily get hold of. I didn't think it had been nominated for a HoF before and I did check because I didn't want to do a repeat nom, but perhaps the specific halls of fame weren't on the list I checked. Anyway, I thought it was time to nominate more of a genre film as these general halls of fame do tend to skew towards drama. Blade Runner is a film I didn't get into straight away but appreciate more with subsequent viewings. I'm surprised there are people who haven't seen it, and I really hope you guys like it, I think it's a stunning film. I'll do more of a write up later on after a rewatch.
The Empire Strikes Back is probably my favourite film ever. I say probably. It's almost certainly the one I have seen the most times for my own viewing pleasure. It's a film that has nearly everything.
I was kind of hoping Topsy would nominate Show Me Love, which is another of my all time favourite films, but I suppose that would have made ranking really difficult! I've never seen Lilya-4-ever, mostly because I've seen reviews warning that it is really depressing and horrible so I hope Topsy has some encouraging things to say about it!
I saw the first part of Dead Man's Shoes once but didn't like it, or just wasn't in the mood for something that violent, so I'll steel my nerves and watch it with a fresh pair of eyes and an open mind.
Amour has been on my watchlist for a while but I've never got round to it.
East of Eden was on my watchlist for the 50s countdown
I've seen Ugestsu pop up on various lists, but don't know anything about it, and I've honestly never heard of Cul de Sac, My Man Godfrey or The Lucky Ones.
This looks like an interesting hall of fame!

Lilya 4-Ever
Hey Topsy, that was one powerful movie you nominated! For your first Hof, I'd say you nominated a really strong contender. I like films that are 'indie films' you know, small budget and up close and personal and your film was.
I was really impressed with the first hour when we see Lilya in the slums of Russia, I kept thinking I was watching a documentary and Lilya and her young friend Volodya were real people....and that's powerful film making! I felt like I was transported to those run-down flats and I was watching real life unfold. It wasn't pretty, but it seemed very real.
The actresses who played Lilya (Oksana Akinsjina) was amazing! I never thought she was acting, it was like she was a real person and that's high praise. Same for the boy Volodya (Artiom Bogutjarskij) he was really good too, and together they had a real chemistry and a bond that came through and made the bleakness, a bit easier to watch.
The second part when she's forced into prostitution in Sweden, I could barely watch that, as it was so sad and so horrible for that to happen to her. I didn't like the Sweden part as much. I wanted to see more about how the illegal trafficking was done and the effects it had on her psychologically. We see a number of close-up scenes of guys with her and after a while that stopped being effective and I thought became counterproductive...I just wanted to see more from Lilya herself.
Topsy, your movie made a big impact on me! Most movies don't do that. Thank you for your nomination....Oh, don't think you have to write long reviews about each movie, like I do! I just get excited about the films.
I agree with you CR.
as i said in the spoiler part i wish they hadnt just put the close ups on the men,i wish they would have gone further and made it more raw.but i think they were afraid of going too far with it.
this movie is based on letters she left for her friends-unfortunatly the reality of what happened to her is much worse and i think they toned it down to not put the viewers off. (if anyone is interested i can put up at post about the real Lilya)
unfortunatly human trafficking is as easy as that-give them a fake passport-but them on a plane and remove the passport from them when they arrive. I think the reason why they didnt put any focus on the men behind it is because they didnt know anything about them-they were never brought to justice.
again i wish the movie had cut off with her on the bridge-i think that would have been more powerfull but i think they wanted to comfort the viewers.
it also fits with the real Lilya being in coma for a few days before she passed away.
Im really glad you liked though CR and it made an impact :)

Lilya 4-Ever

This felt a bit like a Ken Loach film. I don't know if all Moodyson's films are like this or if anyone will agree with me there but that was the feeling i got from it. Never been to anywhere in Scandinavia or the Soviet Union, so i don't know what any of it is like, but it felt like a Loach-esque examination of working class life, essentially portraying life on a poor estate.Visually it reminded me of Loach more than anything, that kind of grim, washed out look (i don't even know if that is the right thing to say i know what i mean in my head though haha). Absolutely not trying to look visually beautiful, but impressive nonetheless because the visuals really set the mood the film follows, so good job there.
The story was hard to sit through at times, really sad stuff, funny and enjoyable at times too but most wasn't, which was what the film was going for so i'd call it a success. Her parents were vile, can't believe they just left her there, it would be different if it was something they didn't take lightly and was something that had to be done for the best of her but they clearly reviled in getting away from her. Both the happy "it's just the two of us now" her mother said to her dad in bed, and just leaving their hysterical daughter and driving off was... ugh. Disgusting, obviously that set the tone for the rest of the film that started out pretty happy and playful. From then on it always felt like her life was going down horrible paths, but during this time she still seemed like she was enjoying life as much as she could anyway. Partying, having fun with her friends, this part felt very straight forward and realistic to me and it was my favourite part of the movie.More than anything i loved her relationship with Volodya, both actors did a great job.Not even sure what to say about the part in Sweden, just brutal and really sad. Earlier i said this film was a success and i do believe that, but it doesn't mean i particularly enjoyed the last 30-40 minutes or whatever it was, because i really didn't. Over all very good nomination Topsy, powerful film but a difficult one for me.
Just read your post Citizen, looks like we largely agree,
Next for me is Cul-De-Sac i think.
Sure,i ment that that you dont really get to see the pure humiliation that she has to go through.
For example one scene she is at a "pool party",and you just see the close up of different men.
I think if we had gotten to see it filmed from a distance as a "normal" scene it would have shown better how shes treated as an object and how humiliating it was. if for example they had shown her arriving-them undressing her or telling her to-then show the different men approaching her and then have the closeups inbetween.
You just see the men-you dont see her.
I also wish they would have shown her pimp beating her up and not just her bruised afterwards-thats what i mean by raw.
they leave out things to make it more comfortable for us to watch but with a movie with a message like this i dont necasseraly thinks they should make it comfortable.
Yes,shes a real girl-it was a massive thing in sweden but newslet in other countries apparantly refused to cover it.

For example one scene she is at a "pool party",and you just see the close up of different men. I can tell you have a knack for looking at movies and seeing what would have made it better. I agree, you're right, we don't see much humiliation when the close ups are mostly all on the men's faces.

You just see the men-you dont see her.I agree too, but I wonder if the director might have feared a 'normal wide camera shot' of all the men having sex with her at the pool party, would end up looking more like porn, and so diminish our caring for her.
But yeah I mostly agree that the focus needed to be more on her, so to show us how horrible it was for her.
I also wish they would have shown her pimp beating her up and not just her bruised afterwards-thats what i mean by raw.

The Story of the real Lilya for those interested
http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/jdnightghobhadi/17207789/402289/402289_original.jpg
her name was Danguolė Rasalait.
the things that differ from reality is that the boy doesnt excist.
other things thats changed or left out:
When she got to Sweden she was locked in the apartment and told that she owed them 20.000 for getting her there.she had to "work it off".
they then sent over 40 men a day to her apartment. She manages to escape one day breaking one of the windows-shes too scared to go to the police so she runs to a nearby pizzaplace and asks for a glass of water. He then offers her to stay with him. He then finds out that she used to be sold as a prostitute and locks her in his basement where he and his friends gangrape her.she again manages to escape and goes to live with a drug additct and her mother.they are under constant threats from the russians and find out that the russians have cameras in the airport to stop girls from escaping.she meets a guy who she get involved with but when hes told she used be a prostitute he tells her he wants nothing to do with her. she then laters jumps from the bridge and ends up in a coma for three days before shes declared braindead and passes away. She has a few number written down in her pocket which leads police to the apartment she was held.there they find several letters to her friends back home telling them everything that had happened to her. The girl she had stayed with gave the names of the men to the police but so far no one has been held accountable for anything she went through.
but I wonder if the director might have feared a 'normal wide camera shot' of all the men having sex with her at the pool party, would end up looking more like porn, and so diminish our caring for her.
That's the way i took it. I see both of your points of views but i have to agree seeing her naked no matter how brutal and wrong it is would be sexualising it. I think it was a lot better the way it was shown personally. Reminds me of how there is no shown violence (or very, very little) in Shotgun Stories and it helps make the movie all the more powerful because it isn't about the violence but the results.
Just read that. Brutal :(

I see both you guys points about the sex part and making it too sexual-
I dont think they should have shown the actual sex part nessecarrily, but i think they could have demostrated better how she was treated as an object to laugh at and "have fun with" and not a real human being.

Lilya 4-Ever has been a great film to kick off the 10th Hof! I hope more people can watch it and soon and post their thoughts. BTW, the Youtube video of the movie is excellent quality, I streamed it to my big TV and it looked great.

Lilya 4 Ever I will just echo a lot of what you guys have already said. This is a tough sit at times but one that is worth it. I think CR saying it was like a documentary at times is a good way to describe it. I really felt like it was a brutal and honest portrayal of the poverty stricken in this town she lived in. Everyone just trying to escape even to the detriment of those they love, like caged animals. So many emotional moments. The scene with her mom, the basketball, and then of course when she goes to Sweden. I think you guys are also dead on about the sex. I actually caught myself turning my head during the montage, although we are essentially seeing nothing. That is good story telling. Fine nomination Topsy, I am glad to have seen it.
I put Cul-De-Sac up next in my Netflix que, so hopefully I will get to it by the weekend.

Lilya 4-Ever
http://data.whicdn.com/images/60779553/large.jpg
This was the movie I was most looking forward to since it was already on my watchlist. I feel like there's something I can't put my finger on that prevents it from being truly great, but it was pretty much what I expected and hoped for. The story is just so powerful, more powerful than the movie as a whole. Perhaps I feel this way because they held back somewhat as others have said? I don't think it could have been filmed any better; the look and feel of the film is perfect, and the lead actress does a fantastic job. If there was any part of the movie that I didn't care for, it was the angel element. I do not know much about human trafficking from country to country, but I have to say it seemed realistic. As far as the clients, predators, and the way she first got into prostitution in her own country, that was all very realistic. Not quite a new personal favorite, but this was an excellent nomination.

I agree with what everyone else is saying about Lilya 4-Ever, in that it's a powerful movie, and a tough watch, but it took me a while to kind of "warm up" to Lilya. Right from the beginning of the movie, she's a normal, obnoxious teenager, so it's hard to be sympathetic to her. (She reminded me of the kids that I didn't like back in high school because they seemed to think that the world revolved around them, and they had a sense of entitlement.) I'm not saying that I disliked her, but I didn't really like her either, at least until she became friends with Volodya, and her personality seemed to change. And I'm also not saying that she deserved what happened to her, because nobody deserves that.
I liked the concept of Volodya coming back as an angel, and I wish they had explored that a little bit more, but in the long run, it probably didn't matter because it wouldn't have changed the ending of the movie. But I liked the way he was trying to get her to try to survive by giving her the world.
I didn't like that she ran away from the police to jump off the bridge, and it made me wonder if she even considered going to the police when she escaped, or if she just immediately gave up.
One of the things I wondered about after I finished watching the movie was if the mother of the real Lilya ever found out what happened to her daughter after she left her behind.
OK thanks....oh did anyone notice on the youtube the video the subtitles were occasionally misspelled? No big deal to me as I misspell stuff all the time.:p
Yeah, i noticed. The most minor one kept annoying me just becaue it kept happening. It kept being donit instead of don't. haha.

I havent found anything about her mothers reaction to her death- i dont know how it works if someone gives up their right to their child-wether they try to inform them. and i dont know if she left for america with her own name and passport so they might not have located her. im sure atleast reporters tried.
As they said in the movie, the mother's request was not legally-binding. I personally don't think she deserves to know anything about her daughter though.
^^ true, but at the same time she should know how much her daughter suffered because she left her.
I never felt like she was a normal teenager, I think because of the extreme poverty. It seemed obvious to me immediately that she just wanted to leave where she was for a better life. I didn't think she acted much different when she was off to Sweden. I could really see the joy in her when she thought she was going to America. Nothing about her seemed entitled to me but maybe I missed some details.

She acted bratty at times, but so do most teens.
I think the director (thanks camo for making me take notice of that) is really good at creating a very realistic mood and settings as is he/or the castingdirector at casting young talent who are great at being so..natural.
teens ARE obnoxious as gbg says, but i feel didnt really take too much notice of that, shes just seemed real to me.

I had no idea what this was about going in, and it took me til about 15 minutes in to get a basic idea of what was going on. Wasn't expecting a fugitives hold a couple prisoner film basically I laughed a lot during this, there was some really great lines "He told me i was mentally retiring or something like that" :D Dickie was my favourite character. The actors voice alone was great, couple that with the hilarious lines and delivery and he was excellent. Really liked Teresa too. The way she acted made me feel a bit bad for George at times, wasn't that crazy about his character though. I loved Dickey and Teresa together actually . How when she started to try to talk to him he just continued to treat her like an idiot. "You are digging it for him?" I'm digging for gold you balloon" :D. I loved Dickie's death scene, it was so hilarious seeing George cowering with his wife attempting to shoot him.

Glad you liked it, Camo. I nominated because Polanski is known for more serious films like Chinatown, The Pianist, Knife in the Water, The Apartment Trilogy, Death and the Maiden, etc. He has done comedy with movies like Carnage and The Fearless Vampire Killers, but I think this is much better and more of a surprise.

I'll try to watch Cul De Sac in the next couple days to keep up. I just got Star Wars from Netflix (the first one that was made) and I'll watch that tonight so I can be up on my Star Wars stuff and ready for Sean's nom. I haven't seen these in decades.
Has everybody checked out availability of the movies? Any difficulties finding any of them?

Lilya 4-Ever, ending spoiler stuff.
I liked the concept of Volodya coming back as an angel, and I wish they had explored that a little bit more, but in the long run, it probably didn't matter because it wouldn't have changed the ending of the movie. But I liked the way he was trying to get her to try to survive by giving her the world.
I just had a thought, that the director had the boy come back as an angel with a message for Lilya...so that the audience can see that suicide was not the way to escape ones problems. The angel scenes are a counter balance to escaping ones problems by suicide.
The fantasy elements are a way to give certain audience members an out that it wasn't all real - a sort of It's a Wonderful Life ending where Lilya chose not to leave Volodya and they made it through the movie. However, based on all your reactions and what is known of the real case the movie is based on, I'm guessing nobody bought that ending, not even director Moodysson.

Yeah, I didn't get that at all. I took the Volodya as angel to be her fantasy. The end to mean they are both together again and left their misery behind. Of course I tend to look at these things pretty surface level. No digging deep for Sean
Well, It's a Wonderful Life is a fantasy, isn't it? What about that scene near the ending where Lilya doesn't go to Sweden?

Ok, I'm with you now. I thought you were implying everything but the fantasy is in the protagonists head.

The fantasy element was the only thing I didn't like; I just didn't think it meshed with the rest of the film's gritty and realistic tone. I also would have rather they skipped the foreshadowing scene at the beginning, and ended on a more sudden and brutal note. The film is dreary and sad, which makes me happy, but I didn't quite get the sledgehammer to the nuts I crave.

When I watched Lilya 4-Ever, the afterwards angel scene didn't stay with me. I was emotionally done watching the film after she jumped. And I thought of the 'together as angel scenes' as a director's epilogue...you know the kind of stuff they usually role credits over...and so I didn't pay it much attention (emotionally that is). I did watch it of course but the story was done in my mind when she jumped.

I watched Cul-De Sac last night, but I was so tired that I fell asleep with about 10-15 minutes left of the movie, so I watched the whole movie again this morning. Then, after I read your review of it, I watched it again because apparently I didn't get the humor because I didn't think Cul-De Sac was a comedy. There were a few chuckles, but it felt more like a drama to me. It was a pretty good movie, but I thought it would have been better as a heavy drama/film noir.
Fair enough if you didn't find it funnny. It was clearly a black comedy-thriller though.

I think of it mostly as a black comedy because that's where I think it makes it's mark.
My Man Godfrey: Screwball comedies are a tough sell for me but this one mostly works for me and is probably my favorite of those I have seen. That is mostly because of the scenes with Godfrey and Irene by themselves. These scenes work wonderfully and I wish there was more of them. In these scenes the writing is great, funny, and biting. There are flashes of this with other characters too, which made it an easy watch. There are still a few scenes of the manic and unfunny for no reason other than to be manic and hopefully funny. Those scenes bothered me and kept this from being a gem for me.
The Lucky Ones
https://s31.postimg.org/ehl9qpywr/lucky.jpg (https://postimage.org/)
This was alright. It was a nice easy watch which i think was needed in this HOF, since a lot of people nominated pretty heavy films. I didn't love it or anything, Raul did say this was a personal film to him so me obviously not having this connection means it didn't work as well for me. Still at times it was funny, and there were some nice, close scenes between the characters. All three main performances were solid. Michael Pena especially was a pleasant surprise as i haven't seen him in much else. I liked McAdams character. Her accent annoyed me at first but i got over it, i really liked how upbeat she was throughout and i really felt sorry for her at times. The part in the bar when those bitches were mocking her angered me so much. Pena's character was fine except i'd like to have seen them explore his PTSD a bit more, then again it had to tell three seperate stories so i understand why they didn't go that far into it. I did feel like they heaped misery on the characters, just because. Like the scene with Robbins wife asking for a divorce, there was no emotion behind that moment. It was seemingly just there to make you feel sorry for Robbins, it was a really horrible, cold scene. That scene kind of put me in a dour mood. I was uplifted by some of the bonding scenes between the characters later on but that mood still kind of hung over the film for me. The only good thing about all of that was that the kid playing Robbins son was the serial killer teenager from the first season of Dexter haha. Wasn't crazy about the last 15-20 minutes and the ending was a bit underwhelming for me, but it wasn't horrible or anything.
Anyway interesting nomination Raul. I didn't love it or anything but there were some solid things going on. Looking forward to your write up of it.
Next i'm going to watch Ugetsu then East of Eden since those are the 50's ones.

Cul-De Sac
firstly the opening scene reminds me of being really hungover and you feel so sick you cant move and then someone comes along and sits on the bed and keeps moving which makes the bed move and you just lie there trying to survive
I though the woman was quite cruel to her husband. from when he was dropping the eggs to dressing him up,she didnt seem be laughing with him but at him. Also her laughter got a bit too much at times in the beginning, maybe because the movie is so quiet.
the arguement when he ruined their car and called him selfish for parking it on his own ground was pretty funny,i really liked the dialogue there, also when he says hes mentally retired "or something"
there were several funny moments in it that made me laugh,i liked all the actors-i liked that the female character had some personality, way too often the women are just there to smile and act stupid.I felt bad for the main character though!

I was in a pretty lousy mood last night, so I decided to re-watch one of my favorite movies instead of taking a chance of unfairly disliking a movie that I haven't seen before. I watched The Empire Strikes Back, and it almost immediately brought me out of my bad mood. This is probably the first time in over 30 years that I've watched it as a stand-alone movie. (I always watch it as a marathon with the other two movies in the trilogy.)
I've seen the whole trilogy so many times, that I already know the movies well enough that it didn't lose anything seeing it by itself. While Star Wars is still my personal favorite of the trilogy, most people consider The Empire Strikes Back to be the best of the trilogy, and I can see why. It's more about the characters, and less about the action. The characters grow a lot in this movie. It's great watching Luke Skywalker maturing as he trains to be a Jedi. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher have terrific chemistry together as Han Solo and Princess Leia grow closer together. Darth Vader becomes more powerful, and more deadly. And we get to meet Yoda for the first time.
This movie is probably my favorite movie of this HoF, but I knew that before I sat down to watch it last night. :)

Did you ever see one of those old war films where a solider is killed in battle, and the officer then has the sad duty of writing a letter to inform the family..Well that's how I feel...Cricket, sorry to say I didn't care for your film.
I went into it with good spirits too, just not my type of film. Usually I'd be writing my take on how the film could have been better. But I can't find any flaws in it. I believe the film succeeded for what it was trying to do and for the target audience it was made for.
Pretty much all the characters in the film, annoyed me. The little guy with the thick glasses had such a grating voice that I was glad when he finally kicked the bucket! The gangster with the wounded arm and the French woman also were so unlikable that it effected my viewing of the film. It seemed like the director was going for zany characters in a zany situation, located in a zany location....a little too zany for me.
I did like Donald Pleasence, and laughed a few times. The scenes where the family visited for dinner and the gangster had to pretend he was the servant...was my favorite part.
I did love your nomination for the 50s Part 2, but sorry to say I didn't like this one....I'll send you your Purple Heart in the mail:p

Lilya 4-ever
Powerful storytelling of a very sad but true life event. I felt like the actress playing Lilya was Lilya, and did a tremendous job as it really did feel real. I think the film did a good job of staying in bounds and not getting too graphic, going too far could have effected the film in a negative way. There were some brutal parts in the movie, and I'm sure it was even more brutal in real life. The storytelling by Moodyson was well done. I dont have any real negatives about the film, it's subject matter is one that hopefully shows just how brutal this world can be.
3+
Ugetsu: Ugetsu falls into the same category of the Kurosawa films I have seen so far. The characterizations have a manic nature that is off putting to me. The characters and writing are one dimensional, stark, and harsh. Contrast this with the way I feel about the cinematography and music which I find beautiful and calming despite its melancholy tone. I also responded very positively to the theme of Ugetsu. All this makes me feel like I have seen half a masterpiece and half a travesty. It is upsetting to me, I want to feel what everyone else feels, but I just don't.

Lilya 4-Ever
To begin, I would like to say this. I know that this story is supposed to be loosely based on a true story. Therefore, I don’t know how many details are fictionalized. But if this girl did experience that sort of treatment from both her mother and her aunt (it was her aunt, right? - I can't remember right now), then I have to come out and say that they probably will rot in you-know-where for having done so.
Having said that, I don’t know what I was expecting with this film. I wasn’t as moved by it as others were. I didn't think it was a powerful film. It isn't like I don’t know that sort of stuff goes on. I know it does and I know how brutal a life can be in that situation. Yet, I didn’t really feel any big “emotion” in any sort of way while watching the events take place. Not that I was necessarily “cold” during it. I just didn’t feel the way that others on here say that they felt.
Of course I felt very bad for her for the terrible situation that she was left in, but beyond that, I was almost a little indifferent while watching it.
Maybe I wouldn’t have felt the way that I did if I hadn’t had some questions during the film. Unless they don’t have second shift jobs there (which I would be surprised by if they didn’t), why couldn’t she get a job? At least try to do so. I know she said there were no jobs for her, but didn’t she go to an arcade with that guy? And there has to be some sort of fast food place (a typical teenager job) for her to try. Those would’ve been two options. Also, I, of course, don't know how it is there, but if someone of that age is in some sort of situation like that, she could've always gone to a teacher, or something similar to that, to help her in some sort of way.
And it isn’t her life in prostitution that bothered me. I can understand how someone can turn to it if they get desperate enough. It is the idea that she was gullible enough to go with a guy that she did NOT know to ANOTHER country. That is when I think I “turned off” a little in my mind.
Yes, I know she was young, but come on! I NEVER – no matter what the situation – would’ve done that at that age – or any age. She should’ve known better. Perhaps she was blinded by the opportunity of getting away. But she should have thought about it first.
And I don’t need to be told what it is like to live without money (i.e. I was the only white kid in school to get a free lunch - it wasn't an easy life and it still isn't). Yet I have been fortunate enough, thus far, to not be destitute, but I know what it is like. I can see how some people are driven to do things that they think will help them out, but leaving with that guy is just leaving it open for something really bad to happen. And, NO, I am NOT saying that she asked for it. I am just saying that she needed to think before she acted because we all know nothing could be that good in that situation. It had to end up differently than she expected.
And I had this thought go through my mind every time she did it. I thought “You don’t have any money but you still manage to buy yourself cigarettes”. A guy I went out with quit smoking because he couldn't afford it anymore - and he was a heavy smoker. You see, when you really need money, you have to sacrifice something. Plain and simple. She was old enough to know that fact. Yes, it isn’t money that is going to help her survive for another year, but every little bit helps.
Also, she did have Volodya. You would think that she wouldn’t have wanted to have left him there. I know she tried to have him come along, and I know she was doing what she thought was best for herself, but I still don’t see how she did it.
As for other aspects of the film, there were two that I wasn’t crazy about. First, the documentary-style way that it is shot. I am not a big fan of that, and I always find it a bit annoying. Second, I didn’t care for the angel part either. I was just not a fan of taking something that was supposed to be realistic in tone and then adding a little “fantasy” into the midst of it.
Now, I am not saying it is a bad film. I am not saying it is a poorly made film. I don’t want anyone to think that. It was good enough. I just didn’t feel any great emotion during it. Not any anger, sadness, sympathy, frustration, et.c., that I think one is supposed to feel while watching it.
But, still, it is a film that was a good choice for a nomination.

I am not reading anything that anyone is writing until I have watched the movie, also. This is a just in case (I didn't want anyone to think I was ignoring what they write :)). I figured that since people were considering discussing a bit more about the movies after they watched them, I would avoid what has been written just in case anything was said that I didn't want to know yet.
I never got around to watching Dead Man's Shoes this past week. I was only able to get Lilya in there.
I will be watching 3 today. As soon as I get off of here I will start them. It will be Cul-de-Sac, Amour and Ugetsu.
i can see your point. And i dont know where youre from, but things are different with social codes and looks on life. no one here could turn to prostitution even if they had no money-but thats because i live in a country where its so looked down upon, she lives in a place where its common (her own mother did it and her aunt suggests she do it too),also i live in a place where i knew i could get help, she doesnt. Her mother wrote a letter to the goverment and social services-didnt see them helping her?
the same goes for her leaving with someone she didnt know, again thats common-she prob thought she had hit the jackpot as alot of these girls do-im sure her mother wasnt the first woman she`d seen leave. Theres so many girls being lured, not even by a boyfriend, just by a job and a place to live. the dream that they could have a better life-she had no future where she lived.
she was too young to work certain jobs,i dont know the rules there but i assume she would have to be 18 work at the register? also considering the poverty stricken neigbourhood im assuming there were no jobs because all were taken.
I agree with you on the angel part though.

It is the idea that she was gullible enough to go with a guy that she did NOT know to ANOTHER country. That is when I think I “turned off” a little in my mind.I think your onto something there...we don't see her trying for a regular job in Russia, we don't see her apply for any kind of help. The film glossed over this, BUT...she engaged in two acts of prostitution in Russia of her own free will.
So my guess is your questions are answered by what you said, it's a loosely based story that has been fictionalized for emotional impact.
If we 'read between the lines' Lilya was raised by a prostitute, had a girl friend who engaged in prostitution, she prostituted herself twice...it follows that in real life she knew she was going to Sweden to be a prostitute, with the promise of more money and an easy life.
Does that make sense?
