I'll hold this open until this evening to see if we can get a tie-breaker.
Hold on, let me make an alt to vote for Videodrome even though I haven't seen Failsafe.

Would you guys be fine with a tie, thus a three-way match next round? If so, should the two movies in the tie be in the same match, or should the three way match be random?
I thought I voted on that one. I vote Fail-Safe unless its too late.

Oh, give me a break. You haven't seen both of those movies.
Oh, give me a break. You haven't seen both of those movies.
It is pretty weird that he didn't vote in that match when he voted on all of the other matches if he had seen both of those. Unless he watched one of them in the last two weeks or something of course.
JJ: a 3 way match sounds fine.
Oh, give me a break. You haven't seen both of those movies.
Ill repeat to you again like I did to Camo once, and then thatll be it. Yes Ive seen both. I saw Fail-Safe yeeeeeeears ago. The Henry Fonda one, I havent seen the Richard Dreyfuss remake yet.
Im....actually surprised Videodrome  is even close. Its a fun flick, but not a true classic.

Dang...
Shouldn't people's own noms not face each other until later in the bracket?
Can only vote on two:
2. Spirited Away (2001; Hayao Miyazaki) vs Whiplash (2014; Damien Chazelle)
(Spirited Away is one of my favourite Animated Films. Whiplash was diappointing for me, not bad or anything i just expected to love it and sadly didn't.)
6. A Clockwork Orange (1971; Stanley Kubrick) vs Ordet (1955; Carl Theodor Dreyer)
(Ordet was very good, i'd like to check out more from Dreyer. Clockwork is top 20 for me though)

I used challonge. I didn't think it really mattered if somebody's noms went against each other, as the tournament is about the movies and not the people who nominated them. Plus, I didn't feel like randomizing the seeding over and over until nobody had any of their noms against each other.
It doean't matter for something like this. At actual tournaments where money is involved though, seating is done be predictions from the organiser manually. So the two they expect to face in the finals don't meet until the finals if there isn't an upset, etc...
It's probably too late now, but also for the sake of some people who are invested in their movies and want to see theirs win, it might matter...
Pretty sure there's at least one match in the tv tournament of someones two nominations facing in an upcoming match. That's just the way it worked out when i randomized them. Personally i don't bother since it is about the shows/movies as JJ said, one of my noms that could've done pretty well got Breaking Bad in the first round giving it basically no chance.

I like these tournaments better when they are completely random rather than arranged by the likelihood of them winning which is a very hard thing to predict and is just too much extra work for something like this. I also really like seeing some lesser known films making it further than you'd expect. I know it isn't completely obscure but i'd never have expected Le Cercle Rouge to have won one of these and i suspect the complete randomness of these tournaments played a part in this.

Tough draw for gbg and Derek as two of their noms lineup against one another. On the bright side, you are now guaranteed to have a nom in the next round. After seeing the match-ups my noms have drawn, that's more than I can say for myself.
haha. I didn't even count i just thought i had saw more Spirited Away votes.
At least one of my three nominated movies in the first round made it (Fail-safe, The General, Rififi).
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001; Peter Jackson) vs The Revenant (2015; Alejandro G. Ińárritu)
The Revenant was pretty good but LOTR is an absolute favourite of mine.
2. Haven't seen Spirited Away (2001; Hayao Miyazaki)
3. Haven't seen Moonrise Kingdom (2012; Wes Anderson)
4. 12 Angry Men (1957; Sidney Lumet) vs Harvey (1950; Henry Koster)

But not by much.
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001; Peter Jackson) vs The Revenant (2015; Alejandro G. Ińárritu) A battle of superiority

It's okay. I'm used to stuff like this from the song tournaments. I know that it happens sometimes, and it can be a pain to try to avoid it. It's just kind of upsetting that it happened with two of my favorite movies. Harvey never even had a chance. :(

I'd say, as a collected unit, our tastes are varied and interesting enough to make these tournaments pretty exciting. I know they are kind of slow, and that might turn some folks off, but I enjoy watching the scores unfold.
I like this speed because it gives me time to watch some movies.
I just finished Ordet. Both Ordet and A Clockwork Orange are great movies. A Clockwork Orange is a personal favorite, but Ordet actually made me shed a few tears and I loved the religious experience. It's such a beautiful movie and I want to see it go further.

Just finished Princess Bride and posted about it in rate the last movie. I liked it quite a bit and i think it would've been a major favourite if i had seen it when i was younger. This ended up a lot closer than i expected but i give the slight edge to Fight Club.

If you are only holding them open for me then i'd say just close them because i'm not positive i'll end up getting around to them and also they are more than one vote apart so you may keep them open for a week for nothing.
I'm going to try and watch all the movies i've not seen in the next sets as i've sent my 50's list and i'm nearly finished with the 10th HOF. We'll see what happens.

I'm leaving them open till the 7th because that's three weeks of them being up, which has been what I've been doing in all the sets. I was just making sure that was enough time.
Just watched and made a short post about Ali: Fear Eats The Soul in the rate the last movie thread. Very tough match for me i love City of God and have seen it more than once, Ali: Fear Eats The Soul may not hold up the second time but i'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt as i really liked it.

Thank you, Topsy.
I think what I might do is start the next set, but leave that other set up until it is broken.
I am in the middle of moving to a new house, so I don't know how active I'll be throughout the next week.
I can't guarantee but i'll try to get The Spy Who Came In From The Cold watched by Sunday, i think it is on Netflix and if not i'll find it elsewhere. Although my vote will almost certainly be for Lawrence anyway which is a top ten film for me, regardless of how much i like it i can't see any way that i'd vote for it over a proven (meaning seen more than once) 5+ film for me.

I hated to vote against NOTLD, but Evil Dead II just nailed me, awesome special effects, comedy, and a guy that fought back in a movie genre where they normally didnt. I remember Siskel & Ebert giving a review of Evil Dead II, thinking they were gonna hate it, both adored it. Sadly they never really recaptured the tone of ED II in future projects.

I bumped The Spy Who Came in From the Cold to the top of my Netflix queue. It didn't say anything about the film being on a waiting list, yet they skipped over it anyway and mailed me the second movie on my queue. Final Scores, need two tiebreakers.
Le Samourai vs My Cousin Vinny
My Cousin Vinny is fairly light hearted for a comedy. It doesn't really make me laugh. But besides that there's nothing else particularly impressive about it either. It's such a mediocre movie. Le Samourai is a masterpiece.
Werckmeister Harmonies vs Elephant
Perhaps Werckmeister Harmonies deserves to win, but I found it too hard to digest. On the other hand I love hyper realism and Gus Van Sant.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold vs Lawrence of Arabia
The former blew my mind. While the latter is a classic, I don't think it's camera work, acting, and script are as strong.
Edit: Oh, I see that's from the previous round. Nevermind then. Curse you Spaulding for picking the wrong movie! :P
Hmmm. Well one of your three votes counts. :)
La Samourai obviously. *shrug*

I am putting this tournament on ice until I have more free time. I've been super busy and haven't had much time for the forum. When I get some time, I'll come back and be more active.
Hows it looking JJ? After the holidays? :)
