I shoulda been at the top of that list....gah!
I wish Id grabbed more power from the draft (HRs), but Im stronger with my SPs. Its a darn good thing to not have ERA & Whip concerns. K rate could be better but I think itll do.

I admit to drafting HanRam due to past achievements, but Im guessing hes not going to be as bad as last year. (There really should be a "fingers crossed" smiley.) Hoping Tulo does better too.

How would you guys rate the computers selections for The Empire?

ursaguy
03-13-16, 08:37 PM
I think I had a good draft, considering that I missed the first five picks. The only guy who I don't love is Braun, and hopefully I can get a solid middle infielder in a trade for him. Hopefully going with 5 relievers doesn't bite me back.

TONGO

Maybe a C, but you can improve that in bunches by working the waiver wire and seal any holes in your lineup, like a complete lack of Holds.

Banknotes Harper

Mmm, I think the computer gave The Empire a team that can be worked with. The first five or six picks are pretty good, but I don't like the whole roster.

To tell you the truth you have some holes and some injury risks but what I have learned in fantasy baseball that you won't know till the season is a couple of weeks in. Sometimes the teams that look the worst(not saying your team looks the worst)end up being the best and vice versa.

TONGO
03-16-16, 01:58 PM
Nice pickup on Brandon Phillips there Mike. He was back last year, playing strong, and then got hurt. Still had a respectable season so should be better this year.

Nervous about HanRam & Tulo. If someone comes across anything good said about them please link me. Yeah, my gut hunch on draft day vs fantasy baseball experts entire, yeah...

Eager to see Keuchel, Scherzer, and Grays Opening Day! http://yoursmiles.org/tsmile/want/t2801.gif

TONGO

Ive got some offensive risks, some needs, but not for my pitching. Oh baby...

Max Scherzer
Dallas Keuchel
Sonny Gray
Yu Darvish (back at end May/beginning June)
Steven Matz
Jason Hammel
Erasmo Ramirez (Hes been incredible)

Perhaps the best starting rotation in our league? Not bragging, Im really asking.

Banknotes Harper
03-16-16, 06:48 PM
I think it's either you or the Nine. I like the top of his rotation a little bit more than yours (Felix, Sale, Carrasco), your starters—as a whole—I think are better, and he has the better bullpen, in my view. That said, I'd be very happy to have either of your staffs. Not at the expense of my hitting, though.

seanc
03-17-16, 10:09 AM
I waz going to say mine but didn't want to jinx myself. Sale and Felix will obviously be having Tommy John by June.

HanRam is wanting to stay in spring training games longer to improve at playing first base. Good to see hes not a sloth. The entire Red Sox had a turnaround a few seasons ago when they all maned up, focused, and worked harder. Maybe thisll be a comeback season for Hanny?!

Ortiz hitting 35 bombs and knocking in 100 is all I want to see from the Red Sox this year. The rest of the lineup can hang out near the Mendoza line for all I care.

Yu Darvish
Alex Cobb (Hes my fav Ray right up with Longo)
Cole Hamels
Jon Lester
Drew Smyly
Steven Matz (pretty sure he'll be the real deal this season)

Until the Cobb/Darvish arrival, Jason "get no respect" Hammel & Joe Ross have to tide me over.

Ross is strong for K's, can be incredibly dominant for a stretch of games, then one he'll just gets obliterated. Hes young. No guarantees at all Cobb and Darvish will even be good when they return, but its alot more fun thinking so at least :)

Dave Kingman the old Cubs slugger, havent heard that name in a loooong time. Loved watching the cubs on WGN when I was a kid listening to Harry Carey. The home run war between Kingman and Mike Schmidt. They were my favorite ball team back then. Turner was trying to get all of Florida to love the Braves, constantly airing and updating that team, but it was the Cubs for me :)

Yeah, I mean, you didn't coincidentally decide the best strategic course was to load up on guys from your favorite team. What're the odds? ;)

The main thing is to get away from the psychological aspect where, if you deal a position or category (Homers/Saves/Closers/whatever), you suddenly feel you have some "hole" that must must must be filled right now now now. That's not gonna lead to good outcomes, and frankly, in a 12-team league, you don't need to be good everywhere.

True, but I thought a true solid 2nd closer was necessary. Familia & Chapman along with whoever the Rays closer will be. Nothings set in stone with the Rays bullpen ever, so I wanted to make sure and get that 2nd closer.

Im not just grabbing these players because theyre Rays. Im grabbing them because theyre Rays AND are capable of lifting my team. Im not just blowing homer deflection smoke saying Im coming for the #1 slot...

The idea isn't that you're grabbing them because they're Rays (rather than players capable of lifting your team). The idea is that you think they're capable of lifting your team because they're Rays.

Like I said: wouldn't it be an amazing coincidence if your favorite team actually had all these undervalued players for you to acquire? Especially from someone with a bit of a history with trading for hometown guys? ;)

Heck, even if they're good, the real consideration is whether they'll be better than the guys traded away. But, the process will play itself out and we'll see how it goes. :)

TONGO
04-19-16, 12:40 PM
"The idea is that you think they're capable of lifting your team because they're Rays."

This part isnt correct. I think theyre capable because I know their track record and I see them play every game, so I do have the jump on the "experts" advice when it comes to Tampa Bay. I knew to drop Souza last year before anyone thought it a good idea to, Ive dropped or traded away Rays before. I am a homer, but the goal has always been to win first. When a Ray is fantasy relevant I cant resist, but its not just because theyre a Ray.

Yoda
04-19-16, 12:57 PM
Re: track record. You said Erasmo Ramirez was going to be great for your ERA, but his "track record" is that his career ERA is 4.15. He's had one good start this year. Maybe he's really good now, but right now that's more like a guess than anything supported much by the evidence.

I think the part about seeing them every game is the real key here. Watching every game makes it really, really hard to assess things objectively, or not overreact to things. It will occasionally lead to finding a gem before everyone else, but I think on net it probably hurts more than helps without a constant psychic struggle to resist the pull.

But hey, maybe you're right. If you are, though, it'd still be one heck of a coincidence that so many undervalued guys just happened to be on your favorite team. Coincidences happen, but I usually bet against them.

But that's just my opinion! :) You could be right. But as I said, if you are right, it's one heck of a coincidence.

Erasmo was abysmal the first quarter of the season last year, and then he was magic for every game after, but one. He has carried it into this season, and yes his career ERA is 4.15 but I repeat, since before the all star break last year he has been magnificent. I have to think Jim Hickeys guidance is the reason.

When he first came up Alex Cobb was awful. Just bad, and he didnt get good until he had almost 2 full seasons under his belt. Archer too. I grabbed Odorizzi last year when he was hot, and traded him when hes not. I do know this team to get the jump on someone fantasy relevant. Hell I still remember when someone beats me to a Ray (Adam with Jennings, and Raul with Wil Myers), so yes Im a homer, but Im a wise homer. If I get to #1 and keep it is not coincidence, its because I had the knowledge beforehand. Like if you loaded up on Pirates players you knew were gonna do good, but you have said you avoid Buccos ....we are different that way.

I dont know man, WAR RAYS!!!! WAR NATURALS!!!!! :):):):):)

Using a different methodology, let's look at it like this:

Considering how each time has to handle salaries, and that no team has a full rotation of aces, simply because they can't afford to, which 3 teams have the best overall staff? Taking the best staff from those three, would you rather have that staff, or a staff of mixed aces or second chair guys from across many teams? Where do the Rays fall into this equation, removing any and all favoritism.

The word out there is that the Mets have one of the strongest overall rotations, but I still wouldn't want too many more Mets on my staff (OK maybe DeGrom), and I just have two. OK, so maybe they are the alleged ace and their number two overall guy, but after that, i would prefer another ace or second guy from another team. The draft dictated I wasn't going to have that across the board, but that would be my aim if I was trading for more hurlers. Alas, it is only April, so I want to give things a bit more time.

TONGO
04-19-16, 03:27 PM
Im not sure all 5 of the Mets pitchers are fantasy relevant. I strongly believe this could be the year it all comes together for the Rays, and then theyll have to trade them all away to be aces for other clubs...:( Think about it - Archer Cobb Odorizzi Smyly Moore, thats the best overall starting rotation Ive ever seen. Thats a bold statement, but its said in truth with no fanfare involved.

Yoda
04-19-16, 04:08 PM
Think about it - Archer Cobb Odorizzi Smyly Moore, thats the best overall starting rotation Ive ever seen. Thats a bold statement, but its said in truth with no fanfare involved.
I believe you believe this, but honestly, saying that's the best rotation you've ever seen is crazy kooky talk. ;)

I think it goes back to watching all the games: being a fan of one team skews perceptions in lots of very subtle ways. For example, someone who watches all the games will see these names and think about what they're capable of. It's easy to remember each of them performing well for one period of time for another, and it's easy to think "if Moore gets back to his old self...if Smyly pitches as well as he can...if Archer stays as good as he is..." etc. I did this plenty of times during the Pirates' 20-year streak of futility. But it never goes that way. Nobody performs up to their potential even most of the time, let alone at the same time as everyone else.

What Mike said is dead-on: if you took the best rotations in baseball last year and put them on a 12-team fantasy, what kind of numbers would they put up? I'll bet it wouldn't be among the best. And that's even assuming you pick the best to begin with! Talent among MLB teams is divided 30 ways. In this league, it's 12, so the idea that you'd really find the best value across one rotation is implausible.

I completely understand, but i think I got a real shot :)

TONGO

TONGO
04-19-16, 04:57 PM
No Im not trying to beat a dead horse I found something substantial. Now mind we are comparing 6 fantasy starters to 5 pitchers from one team.

High Level Arbitrage 2015 Champions
84 Wins, 3.07 Era, and a 1.10 Whip
2015 St Louis Cardinal
72 Wins, 2.99 Era, and a 1.24 Whip. Now they had 1 less starter and not an elite bullpen like Arbitrage had. Putting those factors in they are comparable.

Quickie Marte 2014 Champions
92 Wins, 3.12 Era, and a 1.15 Whip
2014 Washington Nationals
70 Wins, 3.04 Era, and a 1.14 Whip. Even with the extra pitcher taken out Marte did better than the 2014 Nats, but not by much.

Anyway it is comparable, and not as lopsided to the fantasy teams favor as youd think

Yoda
04-19-16, 05:17 PM
The right comparison would be the best pitching team each year, not the champion. Adam, for example, had decent pitching numbers, but he won because he was in the top three in four offensive categories. Tim had better pitching numbers, but as you point out he only had a couple of starters all year.

Also, those numbers don't appear to be right.

Really like where my team is headed. Edwin and Goldy will be quite the offensive combo and Castro seems like a catch at catcher.

For the pitching, I trust Zimmerman and Keuchel to be aces. Keuchel has had a rough start to the year but I'm not worried.

And once Blackmon is back I think he will be great!

The Rauldinator has spoken!

:yup:

On an aside, Rougned Odor is available on waivers. Why? Cause his OBP doesnt exist, he dont walk - ever. Ill deal with that with Wilson Ramos cause theres no other Catching alternative available, but I can grab 5 2Bs right now that wont hurt me in any category.

Same with Beltran. He couldnt get that OBP over .300 and why wait? Grichuks heating up now, as is Chris Carter so Ill ride those waves for awhile.

Dropping Dyson for Coco Crisp? TONGO got a feeling :yup: Now that Dysons finally getting full time play, he's stopped trying to steal as much  I think Crisp is starting to surge and wont slow anytime soon. If he produces against Zimmerman tonight, well that would be a very good sign. I remember when he was just killing it for Mikes Clockwork one season, and then he got hurt. Well hes healthy now.

Hes good, but I want players that wont hurt me in a category, and he traditionally carries a low OBP. Id rather roll with Forsythe who bats top of the order, hits better, and does everything Rougned can except maybe steal bases.
BJ Upton, Grichuk, or Chris Carter start slipping, then BAM! to the curb they'll go too :yup:

Dave Winfield had a similar thing going. I think I recall him being drafted for three different professional sports. Some of these guys just had the raw talent to succeed at any sport.

Guess whose throwing out the first pitch at the Trop tonight?

https://kidzshowz.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/chet-stedman.png

Gary Busey played washed-up pitcher Chet "Rocket" Steadman in the 1993 film Rookie of the Year and has appeared in other sports movies, including Slap Shot 2 and Point Break. He will be on the mound tonight at the Trop to throw out the first pitch, in town for the Sunscreen Film Festival, which includes a 3:15 p.m. Saturday showing at SunDial of his new psychological thriller, CandiLand.

Gary might surprise, and actually make it over home plate. He might just fall down walking onto the field too.

Dee Gordon, sigh. Well there goes the speed & high Avg. Good thing for Rauld 2B is flush with talent this season. Derek Dietrich will take Gordons place, and DD has some legit power and a legit Avg

Derek Dietrich is Dee Gordons replacement and hit a home run his first pitch last night. I suggest you slot someone into your 2B slot Rauld

Billy Hamilton went 3/4 yesterday. Figure Ill give him a shot for at least a day or two, same with A-Rod. If A-Rod gets into his groove then him and Albert can make a nice duo for my UT slots. Being Im last in RBIs it would help, but BHam & A-Rod have to hit as Im last in Avg & OBP too

Yep. Last place again. I benched Odorizzi & Archer when they looked to be on a downward spiral, and vs Toronto. Of course they both killed-it those starts and were on my pine. So those #'s couldnt help me, and streaming that kid from Atlanta, whoa, that was not smart.

So BHam jammed his thumb, and A-Rod hurt his hammy. Going with Alcides Escobar & Marcell Ozuna, goooooooo team! :|

Yoda
05-04-16, 11:02 AM
You benched the two best pitchers on the best pitching staff in baseball history? :D

But seriously: I would literally never bench Chris Archer, I wouldn't think a good starter is on a downward spiral based on one or two starts, and both Odorizzi and Archer had good/decent starts immediately preceding those games, anyway.

That, and I still don't think it's possible to 'play the hot hand' with any regularity. It's not clear if "heating up" is even a thing at all, let alone one that can be spotted consistently.
