I like Sean a lot (though our tastes are dissimilar), but I've not really followed this particular thread on account of my atheism.

He may or may not have appeared on my list with a different thread, though. ;)

You're just everything aren't ya? You are all possibilities. You're probably also a cow, a chicken, a goat, a vacuum cleaner, a lamp, a lava lamp, a pencil, a notebook, a television, a car, the Earth, the universe, Rodent's copy of Young Guns on DVD, etc.
And Blu-Ray.

I've not really followed this particular thread on account of my atheism.
I'm that too.

:D Kidding. But no really, Optimus, I think you over-analyzed the "time in-between for discussion" part. No one can discuss for over a day about one review thread, NOW MOVE IT!

I'm not an anime fan, so despite of the thread being good or bad, I'm not too keen on reading a whole bunch of anime. But it must be good for popping up higher than some other good threads.

Shadow Matt's thread is one I have yet to discover and dive into. But it seems interesting. I'll try to get around to it soon!

Yaaay! GB made it. Great thread she has. The write-ups may be short, but it's not about length. It's clear her thread has a different focus and I like that focus a lot. Great, small, direct, on point reviewing of the movies she sees. Love it. :)

Anything Used Future does is brilliant, hopefully he gets back to posting more.

Omnizoa does everything with great style, but I almost never read about anime.

GB's could have been thread of the year for 2015 if she kept up with it, one of my favorite threads when it's going.

Haven't seen Shadow Matt's yet.

Oh yeah - GBG's thread is great, even though she tends to post films I haven't seen.

Okay, thanks y'all, I was just wondering. I make typos too, sometimes embarrassing ones when I read my posts again...

Also, I kind of wanted to tease Daniel a bit for all the times he categorized me, Gatsby and a few others as "new members" who he "can't really remember" or whatever, despite having been here more than 1 year and some over 2 years as well. What an arrogant son of a *****. :D

When did I do this?

But yeah, probably lots of typos in my old reviews. I type incredibly fast and never really used to bother to check much. Sometimes I still don't. I think it's good looking back at some of the points I made and at the enthusiasm I had back then reviewing some films, and there are reviews like my one for Rango which I really like.

"Omni's Daily Dose of Anime" was #4 on my list. I don't watch much anime, (other than what's nominated in the HoFs here on MoFo), so this is another thread where I have little interest in what is being reviewed, but the reviews are so entertaining to read that I had to include it on my list. Thanks for the kind words everyone, and a special Thank You to Citizen Rules for voting for my thread. I had no idea that people were enjoying my thread that much because I usually say very little about each movie. It doesn't even compare to most of the other review threads on this site.

And just for the record, I haven't abandoned my thread. I've just been very busy with work as the holidays blend into one another around this time of the year. I've stil been watching movies, and I have a whole long list of movies to add, but since it's no longer 2015, (and my Logbook was dated 2015), I'll probably start a new movie thread when I'm ready.

"ShadowMatt's Reviews" thread was #6 on my list. I like the way his reviews are done. They're nicely spaced by questions, almost as if he's being interviewed. The reviews are not too long or too short, with just enough information in each review.

I voted for Gatsby, Christine and Iro.

I like that Gatsby has his own style of reviews and puts a lot of effort into them. Christine's reviews are to the point. As I told her, longer isn't always better. I often find myself getting cross eyed trying to read those novels other people post.

I rarely agree with Iro's overall opinions of films, but his reviews are intelligent and very well written. I had a tough time deciding whether to vote for his Film Diary, his One Movie A Day Thread or both. Ultimately I chose the diary.

And a big thank you to the 9 of you who voted for me. I never set out to be a reviewer. I was really just trying to get out of a slump and encourage myself to watch more movies but it's become something much more stimulating and challenging than that.

I don't think Used Future's thread is one I ever checked out, but I sure will now. All the way back from 08. But it was having activity in 15, so it must've been going for a long good while. Good job, UF.

Spaulding's reviews I didn't vote for in favor of more overlooked threads, but his reviews were great. Always enjoy those as much as I enjoy the same-length comments he leaves around the forums. :D

christine is the sweetest person ever and her reviews are great and full of personality. I didn't vote for her, but I've read some of her works, definitely.

And here was my number one... Gatsby's thread. That was defintiely a literal new and improved thread, since he seemed to take everything to new heights. Somehow he reminds me of myself in terms of style, though he definitely holds his own. There's just something about his language and way of writing that I like. And he goes through the movies nicely. Too bad he isn't higher.

MV I didn't vote for, but I've read her reviews from time time. She seems more active in her thread lately, maybe I should jump in and be just as active in there.

Iro I voted for, of course. Solid reviews, always, though they seem less personal but maybe more professional. But whatever the case might be, I often find myself reading his stuff, so he must be doing something right. And that one movie a day diary was hella impressive too and will probably be top 5 at least.

Gideon is a fine writer, but I didn't vote for the thread. 11 lists though, clearly a favorite here.

Top 10 approaching... Exciting!

As for my cinema reviews and their length... no comments. :D

I have a lot to catch up here and I know I missed some people who I voted for.

I voted for:
Optimus, I like his style: short, colorful and easy to read.
Gideon, who reviews movies many others don't. Always a good read.
And MoFo's Movie Reviewer of 2015, MovieMediation, he's serious about his review writing, so how could I not vote for him. MM, I bet if you only had one review thread you would have been much higher in the countdown. That's true for everyone with 2 or more review threads.

I didn't vote for Miss Vicky as I had a full ballot but I've really enjoyed her review thread. Like Gatsby said each time she write a review she gets better. But I thought her first reviews were good too.

Aww, thank you everyone, after so many established and respected threads had appeared, I thought this ship had well and thoroughly sailed  You're a bunch of stunners! :p

I voted for CiCi too. Not really a fan of horror movies but i really enjoyed the thread.

Thank you, Optimus! And to Camo, MM, Rodent and the other 3 people who chose me! :)

Yeah, unfortunately that's probably the reason...

I voted for Iro's thread and of course I voted for Callum's thread too. He came in here as a nobody who most still thought was a girl at this point, but he brought some serious talent and personality with his reviews. Great thread full of great reviews!
Oh let's be honest, most people still think I am a woman, the others probably don't believe me  but I posted in the personal pictures thread that one time!

But that means a lot to me, MM! It truly does! :) I'll be making my thread a lot more active from now on! :)

Citizen is a really good reviewer and quite knowledgeable about film. I seriously considered voting for him, but with only ten slots he got cut.

MovieMeditation
03-08-16, 04:23 PM
Citizen beat out many greats, but there is a reason for that. His reviews are really good but most importantly they hold close to a perfect balance between long/short length, simple/complicated wording, wide/narrow structure and so on...

This does not mean he just aims to be universally likable, but he simply deliver some great straight-forward reviews that everybody can enjoy.

Citizen rules indeed...

I like that Citizen takes the time to answer and hold a discussion with multiple people at one time. Maybe should have voted for his thread instead of Bluedeed or Bluelion but then they wouldn't have been included if i didn't and Citizen wouldn't have moved up.

- Sexy reviews are hilarious.
- Seanc is straight to the point, just how I like it.
- Optimus makes his reviews interesting by styling and he doesn't give an overload of information.
- Iro has a tendency to make interesting and unique points about movies.
- Gideon infuses reviews with personality and isn't afraid to differ in opinion on movies.
- For me, Ursaguy and Miss Vicky tend to review relevant movies and keep review lengths reasonable.

I find it somewhat shocking in a way that I'm #2 (AGAIN! Just like in Top MoFos Countdown Part 3) because I've never been nominated for a Best Reviewer MoFie.

I don't write reviews that much anymore, but to celebrate this victory, I'll be writing a new review ASAP. I have some I can do.

I don't have my Top 10 list for this countdown anymore -- and don't really want it because I don't want to reveal who I put on it.

If JayDee is the King of Reviews, I'm now declaring myself the Queen.

My thread began in 2007 so it's almost 10 years old now. During some bad days in my life, I've enjoyed and even got a kind of therapy from watching films and writing those reviews.

I even have a celebrity endorsement -- REX REED, the movie reviewer, has actually checked out my thread and called it funny.

Thanks dude! I could say the same about you.

And thanks to whoever voted for me. When this started I didn't think I'd even make this list. I don't know why. I'm a bit of an inconsistent writer with my thread but I hope I'm a decent one. I'm not JayDee or MM, but I do think I write from my heart and try to be as somewhat insightful as I can be, and I would say that's my strength. I think with reviews it's important to not hit the standard beats but say things that are actually meaningful and interesting. Maybe that's why I'm inconsistent - I won't write a review if I don't feel I have anything important to say. If I don't feel that passion (there's that word again), I won't start typing.

Anyway, I hope my reviewing speaks to some people, and again thanks to whoever voted for me. I'm very happy with my placement. :)

Congrats to the top ten, major congrats to JayDee (you deserve it, dude), and kudos to Optimus for running this thing!

Unsurprising to see JayDee make #1. He's a bit of a novelist too and I'll admit that I often don't read entire reviews from him, but I admire his enthusiasm and effort - even if he is sometimes wrong about movies. :p

Sexy often reviews off the wall stuff and our tastes are dissimilar, but his reviews are never boring. Gunslinger is another with a lot of enthusiasm and I like that. Seanc and I don't often agree on movies, but I'm always interested to see what he has to say.

I had a hard time narrowing it down to only ten, and an even harder time putting them in some kind of order. There are too many people here who are great reviewers, but who review movies that I don't like, or haven't seen, or whose opinions just rarely agree with mine, so instead of ranking my list by the movies that everyone reviews, my list was based on the information in the reviews, the length of the reviews, how entertaining the reviews are to read, the formatting of the reviews, etc.

The review threads near the top of my list, (Optimus, JayDee, and Rodent), got bumped higher because they're nicely formatted, easy and enjoyable to read, include some fun trivia, and the length of the reviews is not too long or too short.

The threads in the middle section of the my list, (Omnizoa's threads), are more entertaining than most of the other threads. They're nicely formatted and easy to read, but the entertainment factor of the threads gave them a boost for me.

ShadowMatt got bumped up a bit because I like the way his reviews are formatted, almost like an interview. It makes them very entertaining and easy to read.

The next section of my list, (Suspect, Citizen Rules, and Gideon), are more straightforward reviews, with nice layouts, great information about the movie, and they're nice lengths, (not too long or too short).

Sexy's review thread is one of the most entertaining review threads on the forum, and it probably would have been higher on my list if he reviewed more movies. The reviews are fun and colorful, and very enjoyable to read. SC, if you post more reviews, you could easily be higher on my list next year.

Honorable Mentions: - These are threads that I really wanted to include on my list, but we were only allowed ten entries, so I didn't have room. :(

These reviews tend to be a little bit longer than many other reviews on the forum, but there's always a lot of information in them, and they're very well-written.

10A) MovieMeditation’s Diary Reviews // “Come and meditate with me!” (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=38448)
10B) Iro's One Movie a Day Thread (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=38338)

I'm sorry that there were so many other great review threads that I just didn't have room for on my list, but we were only allowed ten entries. And remember that just because your review thread didn't make my list, it doesn't mean that I don't follow your thread. I love reading reviews, and I try to read as many review threads as possible.

Thank You to all the wonderful reviewers on MoFo.

And Thank You to Optimus for running this countdown. It was a great idea, and a lot of fun.

I really should have put in more effort. I wasn't that far behind JayDee. Imagine his reaction if I was #1 and he was #2.

You'd have been even closer had I sent in a list. I had intended to but didn't manage it in time. I've lost track with a lot of the review threads over the last year or two but here are some of the people I would have included (not in order) -

Rodent - My old nemesis. Along with myself (not to blow my own trumpet or anything) I think he helped to revitalise the reviews on here. Back when we both started there was hardly anyone posting reviews on a regular basis, now there are loads. And I like the fact he's always trying to improve his reviews in terms of structure, layout, appearance etc (even if he did steal most of his ideas from me! :p)

Gunslinger - One of my favourites. He has a really personal, informal style that I find very enjoyable. I seem to remember one review where he hardly said a thing about the actual film, instead talking about himself, his own history and how it related to the film. He's also perhaps the only person who matches me when it comes to having a good old fanboy rant/rave, particularly about superhero flicks. A while back I actually thought if anyone was going to beat me to the Best Reviewer Mofie it would be him

Miss Vicky - She'd make my list for a few reasons. 1) I love her. 2) I had encouraged her a few times to try writing about films so I'm taking credit for her thread. :D 3) Quite simply I'm really enjoying her thread. It's been nice to see her write-ups improving with each review. 4) I'm her slave

Iroquois - I'm almost positive that Iro is not one person. I think it's a collective of movie reviewers united under the the company name 'Iroquois'; I'm thinking at least 3 or 4 people. That's the only way I can compute how many reviews he was able to churn out last year. I think most of us wouldn't even be able to watch the amount of films he reviewed, let alone also write about them.

Used Future - Would definitely have had to put in one of his threads. Always really enjoyed his writing and his stuff is amongst the most distinctive in terms of what he writes about; he covers films that most other people don't bother with or even know about. I've found so many recommendations from his reviews threads and his DVD thread. Just wish he was here more and got back to writing reviews.

MovieMeditation - The man who snatched my Best Reviewer Mofie from me (and no I don't care whether it was deserved or not!). Be warned that I do plan to take it back! Also the only person who can seemingly match, and even surpass me when it comes to how much he can actually write about a single film. Even I think some of his stuff is ridiculously long.

Sexy Celebrity - The most unique and distinctive reviews thread. There really isn't anyone else who writes quite like Sexy does. Some of it is fantastically entertaining, some of it is just baffling, but it's always interesting.

I would also have included or at least considered the likes of Sci-Fi Slob, Christine, TUS, Sean, GB etc along with some people I'm probably forgetting. I'd also have considered Justin if he were still about, I remember his stuff being really good.

Maybe JayDee and I should be a Siskel & Ebert team.

 I like it. It's actually an idea I've had several times before, teaming up with someone. Think I may even have mentioned it at one point to someone like Rodent or Gunslinger. Could post competing reviews or another idea I had was getting the two reviews and then blending them together as if we were having a conversation.

MovieMeditation

I think it's best for everyone if us two aren't the ones teaming up, JayDee.

10,000+ words... We would most likely be responsible for killing some people. Or just one person really, probably Spaulding, since no one would even start reading those.

Wait a minute, Optimus is Masterman?

I saw Camo say that twice yesterday and now Optimus has a Superman symbol in his avatar. Didn't Masterman use Superman avatars? Is this real?

Conspiracy theories out in force haha. I have the new Avatar thanks to Rodent. He sent me it today and i thought it was pretty cool.

I think Optimus is Masterman. His 3rd favorite is Warrior, which I watched because of Masterman. I'd feel stupid, I missed Masterman a lot.

 Wow I won this?

Why are people considering it "winning" if you're #1? I don't see it as a contest to win. And I say this as a former #1 Top MoFo. It just means you're #1. That's all.

Mastermsn was cool. I don't see why he wouldn't want people to know, he was well liked.

reminds me of a Rosie Perez quote i like from White Men Can't Jump

Sometimes when you win, you really lose.
Sometimes when you lose, you really win.

I'm a one-man army.

I do a poor job of keeping up with review threads nowadays, but they're still my favorite threads to follow. If I had remembered to submit a list, it probably would've looked something like this:

JayDee's Movie Musings: He's #1 for a reason. Nobody's reviews are as polished and well balanced. He's mastered the visual presentation, the formatting, his personality shines through in his writing, he covers numerous aspects of every film, he goes the extra mile by adding things like film trivia, he strikes a good balance between objectivity and subjectivity (with the exception of superhero films, at least), his writing flows smoothly and is enjoyable to read . . . I wish his taste was a little more aligned with my own, but that's never stopped him from being my favorite reviewer.

In the 10 Ring: Gunslinger45's Reviews: I love his laid-back, conversational writing style. He injects a ton of personality into his writing, as well as a raunchy sense of humor that regularly makes me laugh. Whether he's ranting about the idiocy of Terminator Genisys or raving about the latest Marvel movie, his passion for cinema bleeds through in his writing. He's not afraid to share personal anecdotes related to his viewing experience. He's had the unique opportunity to see several classics on the big screen and report back on the experience. I also admire how varied his taste is. He might review the latest mainstream blockbuster, follow it up with a sleazy exploitation film, then go on a Kurosawa marathon.

MovieMeditation's Cinema Reviews and Diary Reviews: Sure, he gets a little carried away sometimes with the puns and alliteration, but MovieMed is second to none when it comes to the time and effort devoted to each review. English isn't even his first language, yet he has a better grasp of the language and a more impressive vocabulary than almost anyone I know. His writing has an almost poetic rhythm to it. If size matters, MM has everyone beat with his Cinema Reviews, but I enjoy his Diary thread just as much. As yet another sign of his commitment, he's still churning out reviews for films he watched over six months ago. The man takes no short cuts.

Step Right In! Witness a Swan Discuss Cinema: I wish everyone approached cinema with the same level of enthusiasm, joy and passion as our beloved Swan. His attitude is infectious. When he falls in love with a film (or a director or a screenwriter or an actress or an entire genre), I feel like I fall in love by association. Unlike some reviewers, he doesn't take pleasure in tearing apart a film, yet he's still capable of delivering thoughtful, intelligent criticism. His writing always feels personal and intimate. He invites discussion. He shares with us his ever-evolving attitudes and philosophies on cinema (which is a good thing, in my opinion, since I think too many people grow stale in their viewing habits). His Movie a Day By the Bay was one of the best threads of last year, but since it's no longer active, this is probably the thread I would've voted for. He's also one of the coolest, kindest, funniest members of the forum, so that helps.

Gatsby's New and Improved Flick Critique: Like MovieMeditation, I'm stunned by how strong of a writer Gatsby is given that English isn't his first language. If his reviews were less sporadic, I think he'd widely be considered as one of the top three reviewers on the forum. He has excellent taste (although it's a shame he has such a disconnect with horror). When Gatsby sings the praises of a film, I know that particular film is worthwhile, even if I may not feel as strongly about the film as he does. His reviews are the perfect length -- long enough to provide plenty of substance, yet short enough to keep the ADD crowd from bitching.

80's Trash From the Future: Used Future has become one of my favorite members, yet I don't think I've ever even interacted with him. Between this thread, his DVD thread, his favorites list, and even some of his old Movie Tab posts I've gone back and read, he's responsible for more movies in my watchlist than anyone else. He's essentially our tour guide through the gutter of cinema. I've never seen anyone who possesses such an extensive knowledge of B-movies and exploitation. Too many people thumb their noses at so-called "trashy" cinema, but I think such films often boast a higher level of creativity and love of the craft (even if the talent may be lacking) than what you'll find in mainstream cinema. It's a shame that UF doesn't post more frequently, but at least he's given people like myself a treasure trove of goodies to sort through and discover.

Superb Scenes with Seanc: I think I'm more likely to love a film that Sean gives one popcorn than a film he awards a perfect rating, yet he's been one of my favorite reviewers since I joined the forum. His older, much longer reviews are fantastic (especially his reviews of PTA's films). I think too many reviewers focus only on the technical aspects (acting, writing, cinematography, etc.) and ignore the themes of a film. Not Seanc -- at least not when he takes the time to write his longer, more detailed and extensive reviews. When he puts his mind to it, he's capable of examining the soul of a film better than anyone. I just wish he pushed himself to do it more often.

Nostromo87's Slash Vault: Normally, I'm partial to reviews that have a little more heft and a lot more paragraphs, but Nostromo's one-of-a-kind reviews are an exception. He marches to the beat of his own drum. He might talk about standing on a chair while wearing a ball glove. Or he might edit together a video. Or make a Vocaroo recording. Or drop some song lyrics. Or dress up in a werewolf costume. You never know what to expect from Nostromo, but it's always fun, it's always stylish, and it's always cool. Despite my love of the horror genre, I've never been a big fan of slashers, but Nostromo's Slash Vault, as well as the Slasher Hall of Fame, inspired me to revisit a subgenre I'd ignored for several years. I've now discovered several underrated gems like The Burning that I'd rank among my favorite horror films. Hopefully Nostromo will re-open the vault at some point and deliver more bloody delights.

Sexy's Reviews probably would've rounded out my list, but since he finished #2 and I now have the benefit of hindsight, I'd like to think that I would've been as clever as Camo and thrown another vote toward Mark F's Movie Tab. Sometimes when I'm on here in the middle of the night and there's no activity on the forum, I choose pages at random in the Movie Tab and read old posts from several years ago. The Movie Tab used to be so much more awesome than it is nowadays. People used to consistently write at length about the films they watched instead of just posting ratings. And even with so much more activity in the thread back in the day, it's rare that you go more than a page or two without finding an awesome post (or posts) by Mark F where he writes multi-paragraph reviews for several films at once, showing off his unparalleled knowledge and understanding of cinema. I always feel smarter after reading his reviews.

(Oh, and thank you to the two people who voted for my thread, even though it's been collecting dust for about a year and a half. And f*ck you to everyone who didn't. :p)

God damn, Spaulding, how I love these write-ups! Good write-through of each reviewer there and you pretty much nailed the most important and characteristic aspect of each one... that means me, too, with that wordplay and all. I know, I know. :p

But really, not only is that a good write-up, it also shows that you actually have dived into each reviewer - not just in preperation for this countdown - but on several occasions, just because you like and respect the people who do that stuff. Commitment goes both ways.

Now that this awesome list is over, I was thinking something...

Are anybody seeing any potential in a countdown about countdowns? Or is it just me?

You know, make a countdown of all the personal lists made by MoFos on the forum? Whatever the lists might be about... an all-time list, a best shoot outs lists, a comedy list, a horror list, a soundtrack list....... YOU NAME IT!

It just has to be created by a MoFo and you can vote for whatever reason you like that list - layout, write-ups, movies, quality - whatever you find relevant.

Yay or nay?

So people don't misunderstand, I obviously mean those threads created by a single member.

I feel like we already have votes for the 60s list, 50s list and whatever whenever we do the yearly Mofies...

So I mean all those created by a single member with their own opinion... like FW's shootout countdown, neiba's recent all-time countdown, WHATEVER IT IS! That's the countdown about countdowns I would like to see.

Wow. I'm surprised I still made this list.

I actually think my early reviews are of a pretty poor quality (mostly), but some of my last ones at least did have something meaningful to say about the films in question.

Thanks a lot to the two people who remembered my list and voted for it. Very much appreciated.

And of course:

CONGRATULATIONS, JayDee!

Well deserved. ;)
