Great idea. I'd love to shine some light on some really good review threads that may be overlooked. There are many great reviewers who make awesome write-ups; big or small.

Awesome idea, Optimus!

I suggest you guys check out all the review threads that you can, before sending in your list.

We have a month to get list in and there's a lot of review threads by people who work hard on them so at least give them a quick once over and read a few of their reviews.

Two helpful links (No, they're not to my review treads:p)

Like MV i'd have to read a lot of reviews to come up with a list. I'd need to catch up with JayDee, Iros, SC (underrated btw his reviews are hilarious), Rodents, Movie Meds, Suspects, etc. That's before even checking out new reviews, but i'll do my best :coleman:

I'd just like to post links to these two that may get missed or overlooked.

http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=13118

Scs thread, he comes across pretty anti-movies at times simply because he has very strong opinions about movies he'll never see, but his review are honestly well written and hilarious.

http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=38338

Iro's One Movie A Day Thread. With his new movie log some might forget or not be aware of this, it is staggering the amount of effort he put into this last year. He has a list of the 746 movies he watched and reviewed last year in the second post.

cricket

Just a thought, for those who have more than one review thread, maybe you should say which one is your main thread. That way the votes don't get split which would lower your odds of being on the list. Citizen Rules...Cinamaesque Chat-n-Review

Yeah, JayDee knows from past comments i've been working through his thread for like two years. He's a great writer and his reviews are always interesting so its not just walls of text.

Wait... what am i doing JayDee needs no help here, yeah his reviews suck i guess :p

Also i know she has posted it already but i'd give MVs thread a try - http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=43738

I like how her reviews are fairly short but you come away with good insight into how she felt about the film and if it may be for you. I'd also suggest she post the Quills write up she did in the fifth HOF i think, it really came across how much she loves the film and made me think a lot about Quills myself.

It is only for the review threads so that isn't that useful actually. For instance Holden Pike has posted a lot of reviews and a lot more that haven't been counted as reviews yet in his review thread he only has two or three. Same with Mark F who would easily be my #1 if we weren't talking about threads, since he has posted fantastic reviews all over the site but hasn't actually had a review thread.

Since i just saw one of his posts i'd like to bring up Bluedeeds review thread - http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=33074

The guy is an amazing writer and more than anyone else makes me want to continue to expand my horizons; until he suggests i watch Warhols Empire then i'll put him on ignore. Funny thing is i still haven't seen any of the films he reviewed there but they are all high on my watchlist because of him,

Mark F, Daniel M and SC of all people deserve credit along with Bluedeed for getting me interested in Uncle Boonme and that director in general.

Still disappointed us Western folk aren't pandered to by saying Directed by Joe :p

It'll be the new choice of comparison from now on. "I just watched Shoah and holy crap it was long. But I guess I could only have read about half an MM review in that time..."

Or maybe it's the new measurement comparison... "So I bought this huge 1/1 figure of a Na'vi from Avatar. I would say it's about 3/4 MM-reviews long."

Anyways, I should be going to bed, I'm running on fumes here. I need my 8 hours of sleep... or 3/5 MM-reviews of sleep.

Goodnight.

Shoah took me two days. Your review of Mission Impossible has took me like five months since i read the first paragraph then realized i haven't seen a Mission Impossble film since the second one.

Saying that i'd love to find out the longest review without spoilers, it would take Yoda years to find this out though.

This is actually very hard to do. Lots of people spend time writing astonishingly long reviews that are more like essays but they're of films I've got no intention of watching. Others write much more succinct ones of films that're more on my wavelength and so are more interesting to me. How do you choose? I wouldn't want to disregard the essay writers as I appreciate the time that it takes to hone a piece of writing like that.

I see your point and I see where you are coming from, but I would say you should focus on the actual writing as well as the actual reviewing...

What I mean by that is you should be able to pick out a paragraph or two out of any review and use that as a base for whether you think it's a great one. I mean, you obviously won't get the feeling of a review coming together, but you may get an idea of how a person writes and/or goes through a movie, critically.

I can see that being a problem if you compare extremely long reviews to that of one short paragraph reviews, but if we are talking those really short ones I guess it all comes down to your personal enjoyment of it and whether or not you think it says enough about the movie from the person who watched it. Did his/her opinion get through and do you like the way it is delivered short and direct?

Ultimately this is a hard thing to do, since people have so many styles and ways of writing. In the end it is up to you, personally, how you choose to rate and rank a reviewer. It's you opinion after all.

Wrong, completely wrong:p If a reviewer writes a 1000 word review then their asking the reader to read it all and so it's the entire review that needs to be considered not just one or two paragraphs.

So a short paragraph review is not technically a review but is a write up.

Just go with what feels right.

I looked at how well written the reviews were (regardless of length), what kinds of movies were reviewed (someone can write really impressive reviews, but if all they ever watch are movies I'm not interested in, I'm not going to read them), and style - both in terms of word choice, but also in terms of formatting (If i'm presented with a giant wall of text with no images and no information beyond the film's title, I'm not going to read it).

I also tried to confine myself to active reviewers, but ultimately one or two not so active review threads may have sneaked in there.

Yes, and as a reviewer known for his length, I would agree.

But if you don't have the time and since this isn't about rating the reviews but the reviewer, you should stil be able to read part of the review and still notice how a certain reviewer tackles a movie and how he/she goes through it. Trust me, I'm not a fan of saying this, but that's how I see it... it's not ideal, but it could work.

I agree with this. But an actual review that has been logged into MoFo system has to be 250 words or more. So a short paragraph review is not technically a review but is a write up.
Tell that to those 160 word tagged reviews that are currently coming in as official reviews. And again, this countdown is not about the reviews but the reviewers... you don't call them write-upers, now do you? :p

For example, GB should still be eligible for this list even though her writings usually aren't that long.

This list was one of the hardest lists for me since I joined MoFo because my taste in movies is so different from a lot of the members here, and I know how hard you all work on your reviews, so I didn't want to hold that against anyone.

So my list is a combination of the style of the reviews, the information in the reviews, how much I enjoy reading the reviews, etc., as opposed to the actual movies that are reviewed and/or the actual ratings of the moves.

There were several threads that I really feel bad about leaving off my list because I know how hard those reviewers work on their reviews, but with only 10 spots, I had to find a way to remove some threads, rather than just tacking on a few extras to complete my list.

Omni's Random Video Noise is the weirdest thread, in a good way. I disagree with him a lot and yet, he makes such fun and enjoyable reviews I can't stop looking!

I like Omni's Reviews and they're definitely unique, but I've not yet forgiven him his Being John Malkovich review and with only ten slots, he got cut.

I haven't disagreed as much with anybody as I do with Omni. But he saved it bit with a solid rating of Death Race remake. also, I like how his personality shines through his reviews, kinda like with Sexy's reviews.

Don't remember much about Derek's thread, but I'm sure it was fun. :D

Omni's reviews are totally unique! The're loud, opinionated and I like them! Though, I disagree with most of his ratings:eek: He did get V for Vendetta right:p

I think i voted for Daniels reviews, not sure though, if i did i was thinking of his rate the last movie, top 100 films, etc posts as well.

Edit: yeah i voted for him.

Hey Optimus, can you make a list of threads revealed so far on the first post? Thanks. :)

Done .

Miss Vicky

I like and respect Daniel, but I tried to stick to active threads. I did end up voting for a couple not so active threads, but those threads hadn't been updated in months, not years like his thread.

Just checked out Daniel's reviews. Read front to back of Django Unchained and Rosemary's Baby. Pretty solid work. Nice walk-through of the movies he watched. Quite a few typos though or is english not his first language? Not meant to be rude here. But good work, a shame he's not doing them anymore (at least not in his own thread).

Miss Vicky

English is most definitely Daniel's first language.

There are lots of great review threads that made this list, all of which are probably better than mine. Ime not to great at writing, but i try to make up for it with my layouts and pictures :D.

English is most definitely Daniel's first language.

Could be Welsh since he is Welsh. Doubt it though, no one in Wales speaks Welsh.

I do remember him saying the reviews and that thread and in his first top 100 thread were when he was just getting used to reviewing so he made some mistakes.

Okay, thanks y'all, I was just wondering. I make typos too, sometimes embarrassing ones when I read my posts again...

Also, I kind of wanted to tease Daniel a bit for all the times he categorized me, Gatsby and a few others as "new members" who he "can't really remember" or whatever, despite having been here more than 1 year and some over 2 years as well. What an arrogant son of a *****. :D

I like Daniel, he's a serious cinephile and I believe he's studying cinema, perhaps as a career. I like that fact the he watches arthouse films and yet still can appreciate some of the classic Hollywood films. He's very well rounded.

"Omni's Random Video Noise" was #5 on my list. He reviews a lot of movies that I have no interest in seeing, and I rarely agree with his reviews of the movies that I have seen, but his reviews are among the most unique and enjoyable reviews on MoFo.

I wonder if my Daily Dose of Anime thread will pop up. It's not in the Movie Reviews forum, but it is considerably longer and more detailed. *looks meaningfully at False Writer*

Yeah... I thought that this was more of an "only movie reviews" list, so I didn't think about putting any of the music or TV or anime review threads in it.

You sure do a great job on your anime thread though, ma'am. ;)

Unless there's something about the username or some other evidence that suggests a MoFo is female, I pretty much assume everybody here is male.

I voted for Seans Cinematic Journey of Faith. I follow the thread as I'm sure Sean will be reviewing films that I've never heard of, but would enjoy watching. It's a neat idea for a review thread.

My feeling about Omnizoa has been that he is a male, but there are times when I read IT and think it could be a female.

I think it's some kind of confusing transgender type person, to be honest. Maybe born male but identifies as female, or born female and identifies as male -- OR EVEN MORE ORIGINAL AND PROBABLY MORE POSSIBLE -- born male or female and identifies as NEITHER. Or BOTH. Or born with some kind of sex defect and has no official gender.

It is too obsessed with not being a gender and the personality is confusing. I call it our own Pat from the "It's Pat" Saturday Night Live sketch (and iconic '90s movie).
