View Full Version : The 2016 Oscar Picks Pool is open!

I mentioned this in a couple of places, but per usual I figured it should have its own thread.

For those who don't know: we run an Oscar picks pool every year. It's simple: any registered member can predict who they think will win (it's a prediction game, not a popularity contest). There's no cost or downside (other than the ritual humiliation if you're wrong), and if you win you get a free movie prize thingy.

The more people participate, the more fun we have on Oscar night during the live chat, where I input the winners into our system and relay stats to everybody about how many people got the award right and who's at the top of the leaderboard.

So, yeah: it's fun, no downside, only takes a minute, you can update your picks any time before the ceremony, and it makes me happy when lots of people participate. What more reason do you need, you heartless monster?

Just over half (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars/viewall.html?year=2015). You went 13 of 24.

Yup, 17 of 24 (http://www.movieforums.com/oscars/viewall.html?year=2013).

I had 12/24 in 2013. I seem to just hover about the halfway mark.

No idea. I don't think they ever claimed the prize, either, even though I emailed them.

This year could finally be the year I cross the .500 mark :D

So, being my very first post here, I figure I should make two comments:

1. I have never done an Oscar poll. And considering my impressions in previous years, when I see "Oh, I went .500, hoping to do better," I think I am so out of my league here.

2. Is there somewhere I can go (thread), re new members?

The whole pseudo-objectivity in movie analysis, what one film is worth versus another -- that is lame. But it does not take away from the entertainment value, and the opportunity to judge movies ON YOUR OWN CRITERIA. So, this poll feels most appropriate.

Good start.

The sub-forum of this section is where you can introduce yourself. Let me be the first to say, welcome!

Bump!

Lots of people have made their picks. Don't miss out! It's really quick, fun, and easy. And it'll make me happy. Why don't you want me to be happy?

That'll work. I'll be putting up big, annoying reminders the last week before the ceremony, anyway. :D You won't be able to miss it. Though somehow people still do sometimes!

Does anyone else see one movie sweeping the oscars or do you guys think it could be all over the place. I myself think the big awards will copy the Globes myself. I kinda wanna see Stallone get an oscar because the character of Rocky is so well done by him. It deserves something.

I think that it will be all over the place this year, lots of good movies that deserve recognition, if one movie does sweep the awards I'm gonna be really pissed.

I think best Director and Lead Actor will go too Revenant . I also picked it for best picture but can see it not winning.

Just finished this year's big Oscar Preview with Holden and Mark! As usual, a huge thanks to both for their time and insight.

I'm totally fried on audio editing so hopefully I didn't miss anything; I haven't even had a chance to listen all the way through, but if there's any issue I'll be able to fix it shortly. Now that I've caveated like crazy, here it is:

The best way to listen is to subscribe with iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=306197266). The next best ways are to just download it with this link (http://www.movieforums.com/podcasts.php?podcastid=17) (or add the podcast feed (http://feeds2.feedburner.com/movieforumspodcast) into your RSS reader). Or you can just listen right now with this embedded player:

The Oscars are one week from tomorrow! If you haven't made your picks, you should already be seeing a notice at the top of every page urging you to make them, and if you do, it goes away! So make it go away by making your picks:

I'm working on it. I've seen all the Best Picture nominees, and all the Best Actor nominees. I'm currently working on the Best Actress nominees.

Hopefully I'll be able to see all the movies before the deadline. If not, I guess I'll just have to "wing it" for the rest of them.
