I read average takeoff speed for a commercail airline is 245-285 km/h. for 747 it's 300km/h. For F-I think - 16 a bit more. For Concorde 400-450km/h.
That's nearly 300 mph!
Yeah, i love flying i find it very relaxing. My Mum and best friend who went abroad with my family when we were younger were terrified every time :D. I especially love my mums outlook of ok we are now in the air, pretty sure i can't change everything now :laugh;

No. It scares me.
Used too. If I could afford first class I think I still would.
Nope, you're basically trapped inside a small room of space for hours, and the movies they show are crap, food is awful, and there's always some obnoxious dude that sits near me and complains about everything. Ugh.

I like it. But the longer flights were better and more frequent when I was younger and still in Asia.

The idea of a 500 ton chunk of metal floating in thin air still amazes me.

Nope I hate it. All the time I'm on the plane I have to read a book to take my mind off where I am. My husband's like - look at this or that out of the window, but I'm not interested , I'll just keep my head down till the bitter end. I like going to different parts of Europe on hols but if I had the time I'd rather go on the ferry cross channel and drive there.
Fabulous

I used to get quite sick when I was younger, but now I really enjoy it. I find it very relaxing and find staring out into the sky or down on the ground to be beautiful.
I don't mind flying at all, it's just airports I don't like whatsoever. For example, I hate being man handled by complete strangers, and although in some places these people have been extremely polite and kind, in other places they speak to you like they would address a dog, and it's just awful

I didn't mind it at all when I was little, and then in my 20's I would just get hammered. Now I'm petrified and will drive anywhere within about 1200 miles.

Yeah i love ships! I love the feeling of being miles from land, in the middle of the ocean, awesome feeling!
Surprised I never replied to this.
My feelings about flying have changed several times of the course of my life. When I was younger I liked it. I took a cross-country trip to Nevada with my mom to visit my grandparents, and it was fun. I don't remember any turbulence or unpleasantness or fear. Ditto on shorter flights I took on my own as a young adult; I vaguely remember one with a lot of turbulence, but I don't remember being particularly terrified of that. I once even rode in a tiny little (maybe 15-20 people?) connection plane with my grandmother. It was very loud and shook the whole time, but I wasn't really nervous then, either.
But at some point all that changed. When I flew a number of years ago with my then-girlfriend, now-wife, I found I was scared. I have no idea why. It didn't help that we had a rough landing that changed directions several times on the way down, but I was nervous even before then. Maybe it was because it was a fairly regional flight. I dunno. Whatever the reason, I've been pretty scared of flying since.
It has started to get better, though. When I went to Seattle a couple of years ago, it was very, very stressful. I would've paid quite a bit more money to find a non-stop flight, since the takeoff and landing are usually the worst parts, but none were available, so every Seattle trip means four flights total. There were points at which I was seriously considering trying to figure out ways I could avoid ever getting on a flight again, but you really can't cross the country on bus or train without a ton of time and/or discomfort, and since the fear isn't particularly rational, I figured it'd be better to just try to get used to it.
So far, I think it's working. When we flew to Seattle last year, it felt better. Not much better, but better. Hopefully, when we go again in 6 weeks, it'll be better still.
I can walk through the intellectual reasons it scares me, and I don't think they sound too unreasonable, but I realize it's tremendously safe, however deeply unnatural and unnerving it may feel.

Short flights can suck sometimes. When I went to California in February the flight from Phoenix to California was very very rough.

Yeah, I specifically try to cut long trips in two because it minimizes the chance of ending up in a smaller plane, which I suppose is probably the most important factor. It seems like there really aren't too many smaller planes over any significant distance now, though: the last two Seattle trips we've been on 737s the whole time, I think.
When I flew to Indiana once over a decade ago, though, the connecting flights would literally have propellers on them.

Long haul - no. I cant sleep and get to the other end looking like I crawled out of a microwave. Plus I really dislike the whole queueing like cattle thing. And then there's the whole thing of not having one of these

I love going on deck in the early hours. On one of my cruises we went through very rough water, i could here my bottles and jars rattling in my bathroom, i kept thinking Titanic! I went outside my cabin and looked down the corridor and got the shock of my life, the back end of the ship was in the air and all i could see was the sky, then the ship dipped back down into the water, scary experience but it's never put me off sailing. Nice pic of the ship you were on, was it P&O?

Nope. I've thought about it, though I'm not great around water either. Always found the ocean a little freaky, and I've got a weak stomach, too. But I would like to try it at some point. I think I'd like it.

A luxury train trip for you and Mrs Y, I think.

Oh yeah, I've been trying to find excuses to take a train somewhere with the wife for awhile. The same place that organizes the Seattle convention does an East version in Boston, but SpyParty hasn't been there for years. If they ever go back we'd probably take the train there. At this point it's been long enough that we might just pick a random spot to take the train to without much ulterior motive for going, though.
I wanted to do this one but it was closed due to an avalanche

I take motion sickness tablets for the first few days. The very first cruise i went on i was feeling rough, when we got off the ship i still felt like i was on it! I remember walking up a flight of stairs and thinking that they were moving, it's quite a strange feeling.

I've enjoyed my trans-Atlantic flights. I will only fly with British Airways & I will never fly coach again.
I just can't do without this. Haven't flown since the first days of 1991.

I know many people have fear of flying, but isn't it actually statistically the safest way to travel?
I love flying more than anything else. Nothing compares to taking off. This one took particulary long, due to heat probably, so I'd say it took off at about 350 kmh (about 230 - 240 mph)

I never liked it... It's not even the flying, it's the lack of privacy, the presence of the Gestapo....
But, I wasn't going to swim the Atlantic or Pacific, but I wasn't going to shy away from any possible trouble (which I won't mention)

Am I the only one who looks through the window during the entire flight? I mean literaly. It came to the point people were thinking I'm an *sshole who ignores them. But i couldn't even be bothered when they brought food. I was completely sealed to the window.

Love looking out the window too. I'd always want to be window seat on family holidays as a kid which was easy since everyone except from my dad (who couldn't care less whether he had the window or not) were scared of flying.

I couldn't agree more. Where have you flown?
My first flight was Zagreb - Dubrovnik (if you remember, the town you liked)
The second one was Zagreb - Canary Islands. It was by night, but featured a spectacular landing in Malaga. We had to take in kerozine. You descend over the sea, and all of the sudden the runway appears. Unbelievable.
The third one was Zagreb - Madrid, Spain. First one by day. We came to the beginning of the runway, and suddenly plane stopped for minutes. I was sitting to the right, so I didn't see another plane descending until it passed us like a flash of lightning. I was watching it all the way 'til it came off the runway. You know that feeling when the pilot injects the engines and the take off begins? Intense. since it lifts of at about 300 kmh (which is close to 100 m/s) and after 25 seconds, the average acceleration is (speed divided by time) 4 m/s^2. That's between 1/3 and 1/2 g. The gravitational pull is aprx 9.81 m/s^2. so it feels like 80 pounds are pushing you horizontaly if you weigh 180 pounds. I was barely able to hold myself forward, so I could look strait through the window. When we took off, the ground seemed like it projectiled itslef downstairs. I even saw air force MIGs and chopters on the ground immidiately after take off. It was cloudy, so we entered the clouds in 5 seconds. Another 15 seconds later we came out, it was sunny. Amazing sight looking at the clouds from upstairs. Over Italy it became clear, so I saw Florence, Corsica, the Mediterrenean and Spain. Landing was also thrilling.
I always have the window seat but usually I'm just glued to movies because most of my flights are at night, but so nice opening the shade at dawn and seeing a mountain range or desert, or holy hell flying over antarctica. And always great flying back to my own city as the sun rises.

I couldn't agree more. Where have you flown? No where really exotic, except we flew to Tahiti for our honeymoon. That was cool but a long flight! It was the only time I was on a 747. I remember getting off the plane in Tahiti and it was so exotic warm and humid and smelled of plumeria flowers.
Other than that just long boring flights from Seattle Washington state, to Florida...and there's no direct flights so it takes all day and by the time you get there it's really late and you're wiped out with jet lag.

LOL. Oh my dear, you have no idea what jetlag is. Fly to Aus, Rules. Follow the sun (that means you're in the dark ) for what feels like days and arrive at dawn. You'll feel like you crawled out of a microwave. Flying east to west is a NIGHTMARE!!! Sorry for yelling.

That's why it sucks they pulled Concorde out of usage. That thing took off at aprx 450 kmh, flew at 17 km height and did over 2 Machs. I think max height is actually over 20 km and speed around 2880 kmh, but it's more economic this way. I don't know if it flew to Australia, but even that would take 7 hrs from London.

I don't know if it flew to Australia,
It did.
I wish I had taken a video of my one and only never going back there ever again flight on Aerolineas Argentinas. Still traumatised. The worst flight of my life. Almost kissed the ground when I found myself on the tarmac.
