I really hope you don't exclude yourself from best reviewer next year, JayDee, because I'm already looking forward to seeing if anyone takes a trophy home three years in a row. You, Sexy, Gunslinger, Mark F. & Yoda are the ones that have a shot at it.

Oops HoneyKid as well. Sexy has a shot at it in two categories.

I'm okay with that. People should be able to opt out if they don't think they belong on the ballot or if they think others deserve a better shot at it, but shouldn't be automatically excluded because they've won before.

Well, then fine -- I opted out of the "Funniest MoFo" award this year.

Honeykid won it because I opted out. That's what happened.

That would be a no. We know who the double-account people are anyways so their alter egos would be dismissed.

Who are they? I've been trying to find out.

Dont you have like 3 or 4 accounts?

Why would you not vote for yourself in a category like "Best Reviewer?"

I don't know, maybe it just felt a bit tacky to vote for myself?

Or maybe I thought I could afford not to vote for myself and still win. That way I'd have the appearance of being a good guy and still get the award. Best of both worlds! :D

I'm OK with excluding me from Master of Movies as long as I'm considered for categories I haven't won, but the logistics could be a hassle. I'm also all for voting for yourself if it's for an office where you have a function or do some duties, but I wouldn't and didn't vote for myself for a Mofie. But that's just me, and it doesn't matter to me how others cast their ballot. :)

I didnt vote for myself... I think its wrong to do that.. you want to be stranded on an isle with only yourself...nah... I did vote for Swan in that category.... I think me and Swan or even me and Cricket could have a fun time watching sick films... but then me and Citizen Rules could watch very old films together too.... Im sure I could find a film genre to watch with most here.... Minio and I can watch erotic sickening films... lol

Best New MoFo Acceptance Speech

http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s451/captainspaulding87/speech3_zps69a98f4e.jpg

Thank you, thank you. Please, sit down. You're too kind.

*Ahem*

I'm nervous speaking in front of large crowds like this, so please bear with me. I know I should have prepared a speech, but despite all my shameless campaigning, I really didn't think I would win. I'm at a loss for words. The Best New MoFo award means the world to me. I guess I could stand up on this stage and try to be cool or, you know, make balloon animals or something like a typical clown, but for once I'd like to be genuine and heartfelt so that I can properly express my gratitude to all you wonderful people.

I've neglected to mention this information to anyone, since I'm a little bit embarrassed by it, but I think it demonstrates just how much time, effort and commitment I put into this forum. A few months ago I was forced to find a new place to live, since the owners of the home I was renting were getting a divorce and splitting their assets. The situation was sprung on me out of nowhere, but luckily a family friend had a place available to rent that was affordable for my meager income. The house reminds me quite a bit of my childhood home. It's located out in the country on a road that is mostly pastures, woods and farmland. My neighbors are horses and deer. In almost every way, it's a huge upgrade compared to the place that I was previously renting.

Unfortunately, there has been one major drawback: a distinct lack of internet availability. I've seen Godoggo mention before that she lives in a similarly rural area, so I messaged her last summer, asking her for help, but even her limited internet options are unavailable to me. I had two choices: dial-up or satellite. Obviously, satellite is the preferred option, due to much greater speed, but it also costs an arm and a leg, and there are numerous drawbacks: a rigid data cap limit, an inability to stream due to the latency, only certain hours of the day that I'm allowed to use it; plus the companies I contacted required a very expensive installation charge and a binding contract.

Forced with no other option, I went with dial-up.

http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s451/captainspaulding87/speech2_zps6dcafe4c.jpg

Since the beginning of August, while the rest of you operate in the modern age, watching movies online and receiving information at the click of a button, I've been beaming my thoughts to you through 1996 technology. I'm essentially a caveman using two cans connected by a string. It takes me over ten minutes sometimes just to load a damn .gif, yet I haven't let this technological handicap affect my involvement with the forum. I know how important presentation is. After all, that's why I wore this dashing tuxedo tonight. Nobody wants to read a wall of text, so I make sure to pepper my reviews and movie tabs and other posts with pictures and animated .gifs so that my posts look more visually appealing, even though it takes me a long time to do so. And in an effort to get one or two people to laugh, I'll take thirty minutes trying to find the perfect picture to poorly photoshop my head on someone else's body just to punctuate a punchline. Is it worth it? Probably not, but I get a kick out of it, and if others do as well, then that's all that matters to me.

I worried that dial-up would turn me into Gideon58 and that I wouldn't respond to posts until three years down the road. Fortunately, that hasn't been the case. I'm unable to watch videos, so I miss out on some things, like Weeman's award-winning Brave Little Toaster video, for instance. When I'm browsing the forum and catching up on what I've missed since I last logged in, it can be very time consuming. Threads that are filled with images, like the Movie Tab or Rate the Last Movie You Saw, sometimes take an eon to load, but I patiently sit and wait because I'm eager to see what people have been watching. I'm also a firm believer in +repping users based on effort. I can't express how annoyed it makes me when I see someone receive +14 rep for only posting a rating and a screenshot of Goodfellas, while someone on the same page takes the time to write down their thoughts on a lesser known film and only receives +3 rep for their trouble. So if it takes me five minutes or ten minutes for the page to finish loading, I sit and wait and fiddle my thumbs so that I can +rep that person because I feel that he or she deserves it. I also --

HEY ORCHESTRA, SHUT THE HELL UP! YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PLAY ME OFF THIS STAGE UNTIL I'M DONE SAYING WHAT I HAVE TO SAY! I SWEAR TO GOD, TRUMPET PLAYER, I WILL COME DOWN THERE AND STICK THAT INSTRUMENT SO FAR UP YOUR ASS YOU'LL BE FARTING MUSICAL NOTES FOR MONTHS!

*Ahem*

Now where was I? Oh yes . . .

I know that I'm not as prolific as many members. My post count isn't as high. But even before I had dial-up, I put a lot of effort into my posts. Anything worth doing is worth doing well, in my opinion. I enjoy writing and I enjoy watching movies. Naturally, it makes sense to combine the two. This forum gives me an outlet to do so. However, I never realized just how badly I craved a place like this. None of my friends or relatives are as interested in movies as I am. Typical discussions consist of me asking what they thought of a film, with them shrugging in response and offering nuggets of wisdom like, "It was okay," or "So-and-So was good in it." This forum and, more specifically, the members here, have instilled in me a greater appreciation for cinema as a whole. I thought I watched a lot of movies, but many people on here put me to shame. Since joining, my watch list has quadrupled. I've been introduced to movies and directors whom I had previously never heard of. By reading the intelligent discussions and the well-written reviews that occur on an almost daily basis, I've discovered a previously unknown sense that allows me to watch movies with a keener eye. I've also discovered a lot of things about myself and my own taste in movies by writing about what I watch and what I liked or disliked about that particular motion picture.

I've lurked in the shadows of a lot of forums, and I've even joined a few, but I've never seen a forum that is as welcoming, as warm, as fun, as engaging, as encouraging, as informative, or as involved as this beautiful place here. I'm amazed by the diversity, the kindness and the collective knowledge of the members here. We have people here from all over the world. People with wildly varying tastes and backgrounds. And I feel that every single member brings his or her own unique flavor to the table, adding to this amazing concoction that we call Movie Forums. Every now and then a new member comes along and it's obvious that he or she is already braced for a fight, too used to the combative nature synonymous with the majority of internet forums, but this place is different. It really does feel like a family here. Sure, people bicker from time to time, get their feelings hurt, suffer their little spats, but that's what happens in every family. Unlike other forums, however, members here go out of their way to make a person feel welcome, to make a person feel appreciated, to be helpful and to listen with an open mind and not judge a person for being a little out of the ordinary. Even when people disagree on a movie or a topic, the discussion is almost always amicable, unlike every other forum I've seen where disagreements quickly devolve into name calling.

I've come to view you people as friends. And I've come to view Movie Forums as my online home. We are the island of misfit toys, drawn together through a shared loved of cinema. I'm not sure how I got by without this place for so long, because it's already become a major part of my life. The discussions, the conversations, the jokes. The various games and the countdowns and the tournaments. I love everything about this place. Yes, you eat up a lot of my free time, but it's worth every second, because you've made my life more fulfilling and entertaining as a whole.

Thank you for welcoming me into your family with open arms.

It was the same last year with a few of the nominees. Guns and JJ were both nominated and it felt like they had been here a long time.

I think that will be pretty typical of that award. The members that come in and become apart of the forum so quickly and are such an integral part of it that it seems like they were always here are the ones that will be nominated.

I can't express how annoyed it makes me when I see someone receive +14 rep for only posting a rating and a screenshot of Goodfellas, while someone on the same page takes the time to write down their thoughts on a lesser known film and only receives +3 rep for their trouble.

Amen brother, amen! :highfive:

I was just happy to be nominated for Best Reviewer. I voted for JayDee because he deserved it the most. I know from experience that it takes a long damn time to write long, in-depth reviews. I feel exhausted after doing so, which is why I go long periods of time without reviewing anything. Yet JayDee churns out these novella-sized reviews with regularity. I'm in awe of him, to be honest.

Aw dude I'm tearing up. :bawling: Let's hug it out man.

It doesn't take long for me to write a review. On average, I say it takes a half hour -- though it doesn't even really feel like it.

A JayDee review... I'd say that's a two hour or less job. Especially since I hear he has the special ability to write 10,000 pages every 10 minutes.

I imagine what takes the most time is researching stuff about the movie. Getting special facts -- that kind of thing. That probably takes extra time. I'll say three hours per review, at least. And I don't think he writes it all at once.

It depends on the mood your in and if you know what you're going to write. my typing speed is incredibly fast so if the thoughts just come from my head naturally and really quickly, I can get some reviews done in like ten minutes. I guess Jaydee takes his time and researches, formats it, ec. he's a perfectionist, like SC says, I don't think he just does them in one go.

Everyone talking about me and how magical I am? I like it! :D

JayDee, does it get easier with the practice or you still take some time writing?

Eh I'm not sure really, it's tough to judge actually. The reason being that my practice has made my writing better which has led to longer and longer reviews; if you look at my reviews thread the length and detail of my reviews from the first page to my current page is a massive difference. So while I may be writing quicker I'm writing more so it's tough to judge.

As for how long it takes me to write my reviews I'm not entirely sure truth be told. For one thing, as many of you have guessed I don't do them in one sitting. And I don't ever sit down with the sole purpose of just writing a review. Whilst I'm doing that I'll either have the TV on in the background or something open in another window (usually episodes of Craig Ferguson or Conan) which will sometimes grab my attention. And I'll also just be jumping about looking at other stuff online at the same time so it's tough to accurately judge the total time for a review.

And it can certainly depend on the individual film. Sometimes it can feel like a real task to try and get everything I want to say down and in some kind of coherent order. Other times it just flows easily. Two recent films for example; Total Recall is a film I love and is one of my real favourites. And yet I had quite a tough time corralling that one for some reason. It took me a whole bunch of sessions to try and get it organised. But Whiplash by comparison was a breeze. That one I had the basic layout of the entire review from start to finish written in one go. There was then just a little bit of tidying up. Like Daniel said a lot of it probably does just come down to my mood at the time.

A lot of the time I'll also be sort of planning out the review as I'm watching the film. As it goes along as well as spotting little things I want to bring up I will sometimes form whole sentences, thoughts and paragraphs in my head, and then it's just a case of remembering them and regurgitating them when I get to the keyboard.

Oh and I am also a pretty quick typist I believe. I remember doing some tests a while back and came in at about 70 words a minute or so which I think is pretty good

I do this.

One thing I've been wondering about with messages like Cap's talking about community is how many proper MoFo's do people think we have around here? By 'proper' I mean people who are around and posting regularly and interacting with others on the board and in private. Any guesses?

Yoda probably has a pretty clear answer to that question.

I'd say about 60-100?

Pretty close, Cob... I just checked the members list.
Give or take, there's around 80 regulars.

I thought it would be more than that. Well then half the members participated, so that's good.

How did you actually get to that though? Maybe I'm being spectacularly stupid but I couldn't find that anywhere

And how did you arrive at 80 people anyway?

Wow, I haven't read Spaulding acceptance speech until now... Post of the year 2015 defiantly. It says so much about everything really.

That actually put a lot thoughts in motion, and made me realize multiple things about this forum that I just don't appreciate enough. Or, perhaps I do, but sometimes you forget to show your graditute by actually posting. Something as simple as "thank you" or "I agree with you" can do a whole lot. I agree this forum is almost like a family. I have been on many forums, and I have said this before and I will say it again: this forum is the most calm and collected I have been on. The most intimate and the most welcoming. Discussions are never that blown up here, and insults and name-calling is rare. I talk from experience, as I come from a rap forum and is used to people insulting your private life and exploiting your pictures and information online, just to get a laugh and some "respect" from other members. I have experienced forums much more calm than that, of course, but this feels like home, truly, it really does.

And thank you Capt Spaulding for being a part of this forum, and for dedicating so much of your time when you have multiple obstacles in your way.

At the top there's a clicker called Posts that puts all the members in order of posts, highest to lowest.

Its the same system Miss Vicky and I were using for the Top 50 Posters

Oh, the only way to get that now with the new layout is use Google or the link I posted.

I'm glad you feel that way. :)

The forum had such an influx of great new members this year. We really did and you're definitely on that list. Hopefully you all stick around and don't disappear on us like Donuts. :(

It'll be a few months yet until the categories are decided and people nominated, let alone the rest.
