If you're a Sci-Fi fan, these are the films from each year that you must see.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is just decent: solid enough, but nothing all that special.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob and Journey to the Center of the Earth are all awesome, though.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
The Blob
Journey To The Center Of The Earth

The original The Day The Earth Stood Still is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi films.

As I recall, 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea is another great movie. I haven't seen it in a while though. I'll have to rewatch it again.

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is a good movie, but a bit creepy, (which works well for this movie).

I liked the original version of The Blob, but it's another movie that I haven't seen in a while.

Journey To The Center Of The Earth is another good movie.

So far, this is a great list to use as a reference if we do a B movie science fiction and creature features HoF. :)

Maybe I should articulate some...

The Day The Earth Stood Still...if viewed with the mindset of someone from the 1950s, with the Red scare being pounded into your head....and THEN you see this refreshing movie that shows us that the unknown is not always something evil and that unbridled fear lives in the hearts of many men, then the film becomes a daring master piece. 5/5

Journey To The Center Of The Earth...This is just a great story line, almost like we're taking the journey ourselves. Interesting characters with the great James Mason and Pat Boone too, oh and the duck. 4/5

Invasion Of The Body Snatchers...This one also works as allegory about the threat of communist infration into American society. People where really scarred of this kind of thing. Well done film. 4/5

The Blob...It sounds like good stupid fun, but it's a fairly well done story. One of the best of the Bs. 3.5/5

Invaders From Mars...Pretty well done film, with more science in it than one would expect. 3.5/5

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea...Not as interesting as it could have been, but Kirk Douglas and James Mason help it out. 3/5

+ rep for all of these movies. They may not be the best of each year, but they're all good movies.

Alien and Aliens fall a little bit too close to horror for my taste, but I can't deny how good they are anyway.

Alien Nation was a good movie, but I liked the series even more than the movie.

The Nutty Professor
Solaris
Scanners

The Nutty Professor is a sci-fi movie? I don't like Jerry Lewis, so I've never seen a lot of his movies, including this one. He's very annoying in most movies that I've seen him in, especially the ones with Dean Martin. (I love Dean Martin, so I've seen a few of the Martin and Lewis movies.)

I like the remake of Solaris with George Clooney, but I haven't seen the whole movie of the 1972 original version. I've only seen bits and pieces of it.

I've never seen Scanners, but many years ago at a sci-fi convention, they showed still pics from movies, and the audience had to guess what movie the pics were from. They showed one pic that looked like a guy's head exploding, and most people yelled out Scanners, but the pic turned out to be from Raiders of the Lost Ark, when the ark is opened.

My idea was to have all pre-50s sci-fi films in a single post.

That's the problem I found with pre-50s.

Some years only have a couple and both/all three are pants. There'd end up being a few years with no entries.

I found a decent start with 1950.
65 years, 65 films.

It was either that or Oblivion... or Elysium... or After Earth... yeah, 2013 was pretty poor.

World War Z is a decent movie though. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, which is why it got the placement.

I must be further behind on recent movies than I realized. The only movies listed from 2000 on that I've seen are Signs and Moon. I liked Moon, but I didn't care for Signs. I thought the ending was kind of lame.

I really want to see Guardians of the Galaxy, but I haven't found the DVD at the right price yet.

That's about $15 in US dollars, right? That's still too much for me.

I'm cheap when it comes to buying DVDs. I buy a lot of DVDs, so I usually wait for them to hit Walmart's $5 bin, or even better, I buy a lot of garage sale DVDs for $1 or less.

It might even be on cable TV before I find the DVD, but I'll see it eventually. (I also DVR a lot of movies from TCM and other cable movie channels, and burn them to DVD until I can find the DVD at the right price.)

The Rodent
12-19-14, 09:56 PM
Yeah £10 is about $15.

It's the starting price these days for newly released DVDs. Makes a change from years ago when a new release would set you back £20 or £25.

Hope you lot enjoyed the list though. I had fun watching all those reps flooding in :D

Cheers guys!

Seems to me the point is to comment on the films themselves - not complain that the author didn't pick the movies you like.

It's kinda the point of making a list that people can comment, say what they do or don't like, and what they would have considered in place of the writer's choices.

If anything, I like the input... and the rep :D

Mark is also a MoFo with more movie knowledge than anyone I've ever met either on or off t'web, so just having him rep my choices, let alone comment, is quite an honour

He merely told Rodent that he would have preferred two other movies...out of 65. And it gave him a chance to mention two other movies that maybe Rodent hadn't seen, and now he may watch them. Or perhaps he could tell Mark why he chose not to include them. It's not really a big deal.

I just watched the Alien Nation movie for the first time. Your list inspired me to -- and it was on TV.

I've never seen the show. I remember the show -- if I watched it, though, I don't remember that.

The movie was good but kind of lackluster. I liked Mandy Patinkin as the alien "George" but found James Caan's Sykes character a little bland. Thank God it was a short movie (90 minutes). Seemed like there should have been more to it -- thus, I guess, the reason why a TV show was made. I give it 3.5. I do wonder if there were any better sci-fi movies in 1988, though.

THAT black/white flying saucer movie scared the heck out of me, as a kid,as it showed how ALIEN the guys in the heavy-space suits were, and all the "inhuman" behavior.--which later as an adult,I realized was very HUMAN BEHAVIOR--how we would have acted, going to another planet,& tried to take over their planet.(shmirk).PLUS, the giant octopus wrapped around the huge bridge was a big favorite.JULES VERNES I first read, then watched, they translated so well to movie form.(Did anyone else ever read Edger Rice Burroughs"Tarzan novels," as a kid or teen?)Incidentally, BOTH BLOB movies are good!;)

In the running so far:
Batman V Superman, Deadpool, Independence Day: Resurgence, 10 Cloverfield Land, TMNT: Out Of The Shadows (borderline sci-fi)...
2016 has been a bit slow in the sci-fi, space and futuristic-fantasy stakes.

Any ideas and suggestions for me to look at would be appreciated :D

Star Trek Beyond

This marks the first Trek movie to make my list.
Beyond is surprisingly better than expected, and the standalone story makes it, well, stand out.

Solid third movie to the first two, and rounds up Caesar's journey nicely too.

Awesome, will have a gander at them.
Been wanting to see A Quiet Place for ages, and waiting for the DVD.
Problem is, I've avoided all media on the movie until I can see it so I don't spoil it for myself so not sure exactly if it's sci-fi or not.

I'll get the DVD soon and give it a pop, just don't spoil it for me between then and now :)

A Quiet Place

Nope, not Infinity War as some, even me, would have thought it would be.

An affective, effective horror... packed with tension, a few hints of homage to other horror movies... and some fantastic acting.
Especially from Millicent Simmonds, a ground-breaking actress I've even got shortlisted on my nominations for MoFo's Film Awards (https://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?t=58369) Best Supporting Actress Category (shameless plug there @TheUsualSuspect (http://www.movieforums.com/community/member.php?u=9280)).

This film is not worthy of just a look... it's worthy of actually buying on home-release as part of your collection, and easily earns its quiet place on the shelf (ahem, sorry, couldn't help the pun).

2018's Sci-Fi and Futuristic-Fantasy Movie is: A Quiet Place.

Have you seen this: Prodigy (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5017936/)? It should count as 2018 as the 2017 showing was just one festival. For me it's the best scifi (etc.) film this year at staggering 7/10 rating :D

Ok, borderline with the sci-fi thing, but, it definitely is sci-fi given it's about superheroes and super powers and stuff.

Combining solid storytelling with both the psychological-thriller and atmosphere of the first 2 movies in the series.
Loved the actual psychology stuff going on as well in terms of the story revolving around a psychologist studying the characters etc.

Not as strong as the first movie, but it's better than the (still) brilliant 2nd movie, doesn't rely too heavily on the audience having to have seen the other movies to understand it... and it's rare for the 3rd-in-a-trilogy to do all those things.

Well worth a pop.

I think it suffers from the studio in-fighting and the fact it had the unenviable task of being the follow-up to Endgame.
But yeah, I thought it was solid tbh. Not the best MCU movie, but still solid and fun.

I've spent the past couple days going over what was actually released in 2020... and well, there's literally nothing notable.

Sure, ok, the pandemic smashed a lot of releases and pushed many to 2021 but there's simply not enough actually released in 2020... we had, like, erm... Underwater, Tenet, Sputnik, The Invisible Man... nothing really of any quality to even warrant a shortlist to be totally honest.

And to show how bad 2020 actually was... The New Mutants, the 13th movie of the X-Men franchise was released, and I didn't even know until 15 minutes ago that it had even been filmed let alone actually released.

I guess if I was pushed to give an answer to 2020... probably Bill & Ted Face The Music simply due to there being nothing else to pick from.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b9/Bill_%26_Ted_Face_the_Music_poster.jpg

For the first time... after 70 years worth of movies in this list, a list that I've been running for what, 6 or 7 years now, and 2020 gave us nothing.
Bad year.

Like 2020, it's been a little light on the ground for all movies. Let's hope 2022 works out better.

So far I got...

Free Guy
Godzilla Vs Kong
Justice League: The Snyder Cut. Yes, I'm counting this as it is a totally different movie to the studio bilge that was churned out in 2017.

Anyone wanna throw any gems out for me to consider for 2021?

Obviously Dune.

Though I haven’t seen them yet, there’s Voyagers and Chaos Walking that came out earlier this year. And of course, The Tomorrow War.
Hm. I’m going to have to check my list (yes, I keep a list of movies that come out yearly that I track so I can watch them, have been since 2006).

Surprising good movie. I was concerned about the new trope of a 30lb teenager with no experience beating a Predator but the movie manages to not cross that Mary Sue line.
Not as good as the first two Predator movies, but definitely better than Pred 3 and 4.

Fantastic movie! I'm so glad it won an Oscar tonight.

I just watched Scream and Scream Again, as I'm a big Christopher Lee fan and had never heard of it. I really liked how unapologetically bizarre the whole thing was. Going from the jogger in the "hospital", to a dystopian Soviet-esque regime assassination, to the victim of a serial killer in England. Few movies have the guts to be that disjointed. Still, it manages to come together and (shockingly) has a good ending.

I really like the list... with one exception. And it isn't Nutty Professor. Absolutely nothing else of merit came out that year.

But Dream Catcher? I know you said there would be some stinkers, but Dream Catcher terrible in a way that doesn't even seem relevant. It's like King's greatest hits shoved in s blender with 'Alien'.

Why not X2? Terminator 3? I'd even take Paycheck over Dream Catcher.

Seriously though, thank you for the recommendations. I'll add a lot of these to my watch list.

:) thanks for the reply...

I think with some picks, like Dreamcatcher for instance, I went with underseen or underrated rather than just go for the shoe-ins like I did with Aliens in 1986 and RoboCop in 1987.
Some movies, though kinda janky, still deserve a little love, and Dreamcatcher I think is definitely one of those.

I mean, talking of 1986... it came down to either Aliens, or TerrorVision... but I went with the must-see on that one, over the one that's a guilty pleasure. TerrorVision is one of those so-bad-it's-good movies.

1987 was between RoboCop and Predator, though we all know Robo takes that fight for me :D
Let me know though, stillmellow if you do get to any of these how you feel about them :)
Be nice to see some feedback on my picks from someone who has watched them for the first time based from a recommendation I made :)

---
rambond asking about The Mist over Sunshine... sorry it took so long to reply... yeah, like I've said, it's a case of choosing one over the other in terms of must-see or a favourite, over a technically brilliant movie... or going for something that really deserves a bit of love.
In which case, The Mist gets a bit of a bad rap from time to time so if my list gets people watching it, all the better :)

2024 needs doing :D

So the choices for 2024 were between:
Alien: Romulus (ugh)
Megalopolis (ugh)
Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (kinda ugh)
Borderlands (ugh)
The Crow (ugh ugh)
GB: Frozen Empire (ugh)
Furiosa (ugh)
Venom: The Last Dance (ugh)
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (ugh)

Lots of movies, and not a great year tbh.

My choice for 2024:

DUNE: PART 2

https://i.imgur.com/oVGGNkn.jpeg

Not much else I can say about this that already hasn't.
Though I didn't give the 2021 slot to the first movie, Dune 2 has Villeneuve managing to do the impossible yet again by adapting the novel into something that's watchable, epic, understandable, and genuinely exciting.
