View Full Version : 2015 MoFo Challenges
Godoggo
12-15-14, 10:29 PM
This is an idea I came up with. Instead of New Year's resolutions, or in conjunction with, I thought we could challenge each other with things to do in the year 2015.
The challenges can be anything from something you want someone to watch, read or do. Obviously, if you want someone to really complete the challenge, it shouldn't be something crazy. When anyone completes a challenge they can come back here and post about it. :)
Try not to overload one member with too many challenges. Let's spread the love around. :)

Love it. I will try to come up with some. I accept my new year challenge gladly.
I remember you posting about how you should watch more of his movies. That's how I want this thread to work. If people say they should or want to do something, I believe the likelihood of them actually doing so will be increased if they are challenged.
Also if you really think someone will like something but needs a little nudge to get them to see/read/do it.
I could tell you put some thought into it. I will try and do the same.
Godoggo

Yeah, I mean if someone gives you something unrealistic, obviously it won't get done.
Also it would be helpful if someone wants to be challenged to say so. That way other members will know to give you one.

Oh very cool idea. :yup: I wonder if anyone has challenged me to anything.
EDIT - Just looked and spotted that G-Dog has challenged me to watch and review My Life as a Dog. I can promise I'll certainly give it a watch but can't do quite the same when it comes to the review, not all films inspire a review from me but hopefully.
You don't have to do one of your novels, just a few words will do. :)

Challenge:
Godoggo:I challenge to do the artwork for two HOF inductees.
Cobpyth: I challenge to finish his favorites thread.
Swan:I challenge to write two reviews in his review thread.
Honeykid:I challenge to watch five movies released in 2015.
That is quite the challenge, but I accept it. :) Darn, I just remembered La Jetée still hasn't been inducted. I guess I have to challenge myself to do that. :)
If you guys give me awhile, I'll update the first post with challenges. Also if anyone completes any tell us in this thread.
You may benefit you in the future to complete your challenges. Not saying this is a contest, but maybe it is.

That's a good idea. If it's not too much work, you might want to also sort them by the name of the person being challenged to make it easier for people to find their challenges.
I'm grouping them, so everyone should find all their challenges together and not all split up. I'll organize it better when I have more time. :)
I challenge Swan to do at least 10 commentaries with me in 2015. :)

Hum, I Claudius. I have planned to watch that for years.
If you can make that challenge about a TV series: I will also challenge anyone to watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes, in it's full glory of 110 episodes and 55 hours of epic animated science fiction about history and political philosophy. The whole thing is in youtube by the way.
I challenge everyone to watch the movie The Chumbscrubber because it shouldn't be such an obscure movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBJ_kBpuaDA
Edit: I've seen like 20 episodes of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I couldn't get through it all. There's blocks where it's interesting and blocks where it's boring, and the boring blocks are kind of hard to get through sometimes. I will finish it at some point in my life though, Lord willing.

Finishing it would be very unrealistic. Like all lists, I've quite the catching up to do. I think I rewatch films a lot more than others here in general, hence why my list counts are pretty low. Then again, upon first joining the site, I was 10% or less for most lists, so there's that:D

I challenge Miss Vicky and honeykid to try out Game of Thrones, even if it's only a couple of episodes. I know you're both hesitant because of it being fantasy but actually that only plays really quite a small part in the show. In exchange I'll agree to watch (and if possible review) say, 2 or 3 films of your choosing. That's 2 or 3 each, not 2 or 3 you both agree on.

I challenge Mistique to watch 120-115 of my favorite 120 list. Number 120 you have to watch for the short tournament anyway. :)

I challenge Mark F. to challenge someone and get them to complete it by Jan. 15th. You don't have to specify the person. Anyone that completes a challenge by you on or before that date counts. (It must be something that takes at least the time it takes to watch one movie. :) )
I challenge Guaporense to do one thing he has never done before. (It can be as simple as eating a new food.)
I challenge Cricket to pick one challenge from any member and complete it. (Must be an active challenge and not a completed one.)

Oh that's quite a challenge and an undertaking. I've sort of got my own personal challenge ongoing right now to finally post version 2.0 of my favourite films list. So for that I've been rewatching (and still plan to rewatch) hundreds and hundreds of films to try and sort it out. So that's taking up a lot of my movie viewing right now. But I'll perhaps try and give it a go.
Out of interest any specific reason why you choose me as one of the people for the challenge?

Well I'll see how it goes. Out of interest does it have to be 49 unique films? Or if there's one film that covers a number of lists can it count for all of them? If I watched Gone With the Wind for example would it count as one film ticked off for the 100 Movies list, the 100 Passions list, 100 Cheers list and Ebert's Great Movies list?
:bored:
You don't seem too impressed with my efforts. But I think you'll find I fulfilled your criteria to the letter. I wrote about a film that I really liked (and Bowfinger is such a film) and did so in "200 words or fewer". I think you'll find 3 words is fewer than 200. There's not a court in the land that would rule against me! :p
But alright here's something perhaps more in the spirit of what you meant. And boy was it tough. I thought I'd kept it very short but still had to cut it down to fit your guidelines. And it came in at exactly 200 words.

One of the most under-rated comedies around in my opinion, certainly of the 90s. Working from a terrific concept it's a very funny and witty film that both skewers the craziness of Hollywood but also acts as a love letter to film-making. Steve Martin's character is actually rather reminiscent of the infamous Ed Wood; low on talent but high on passion, all he wants to do is make movies, something I'm sure many of us on here can relate to. Murphy and Martin are both on top form and it's got a great supporting cast too, with the always wonderful Christine Baranski and a sexy-as-hell Heather Graham being real stand-outs. As much fun as it is there's also something rather sad about watching Bowfinger now. Murphy and Martin were two comedy icons through the 70s and 80s, just absolute legends. And yet this film, now 15 years old, remains pretty much the last funny film either of them made. Where did it all go wrong guys? :(
Oh and there also seems to be a real piss-take of Scientology which I never got before (mostly as I was unaware of it at the time I guess) that is very funny.
honeykid

TBF, neither of them had made a funny film for a good while before, either, so if you're looking for where it all went wrong, you'll need to look pre-Bowfinger.

E-mail. Last year. It's in my review thread somewhere. I e-mailed Rex Reed supporting him after the whole Melissa McCarthy thing (he wrote a review for Identity Thief calling her a "hippo") and told him I wrote reviews for this site. He wrote back telling me my reviews were funny. So he did come to the site and check it out.

No promises but I'll add it to the list. However outside of honeykid and Miss Vicky (who I already offered the chance to challenge me) can I call a moratorium for the moment on individual film challenges to me. I've already got Inland Empire, My Life as a Dog, Friendly Mushroom's epic challenge and now the Godard films. And as I said a whole lot of my time just now is dedicated to rewatching films to try and sort out my new favourite films list. If I'm doing well with the challenges at some point I'll open it back up
Sure, I know a few mates of mine enjoy it, and I don't exactly dislike any Marvel films really, so I will do. I plan to watch Captain America: The Winter Soldier at some point too :p
I was going to suggest Winter Soldier because that was actually my favourite comic book flick of the year but it's more bedded into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and I didn't know how many you'd seen or where you were at with it. Guardians of the Galaxy however can be seen just as a stand-alone film that doesn't really link to any of the previous films
Forum Wide Challenges
Here are a couple of boring movie watching challenges for everyone. The purpose is to help people (and that most certainly includes me) expand their movie watching variety.
1. Watch a film from at least 7 different countries. For the purpose of this challenge let's classify the UK and Ireland as one country, and lump the US and Canada together as one country of North America. So for example if you watch films from USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland you've not ticked off 6 countries but just 2.
2. Watch a film from each decade between the 1930s and the 2010s. So that's a film from 9 separate decades.
Oh and here's an extra challenge which is just a silly little bit of fun.
3. Complete the alphabet in terms of films you watch. Taking the first letter of each film try and tick off all 26 letters of the alphabet. If people want to complete this one I imagine we'll be getting a lot of viewings of Quiz Show and Quills. :D

How about a couple of additions to this challenge. Bonus points available for not just looking like a character but for recreating a particular moment or scene from the film/TV show they're part of. Bonus points also for getting other individuals to join you in the challenge. Oh and how about bonus points if the character you're replicating is of the opposite sex. :D Hell I think this thing should have a thread of its own

Your good at coming up with these challenges.
For Q people can watch Queer Duck the Movie. It's pretty cute. I want to do the alphabet challenge. Should they be movies we haven't seen? If so, I'm going to need more suggestions for Q.

Climb the 10 highest mountains in the world.
Yes movies can be counted for multiple lists like Gone With the Wind.

I've got most of the challenges added to the first post, but I still have to add some more. If Sexy does his naked running challenge you boys have to watch it privately because we don't want him banned from the site. :D
I was thinking we should come up with a point system for the challenges as some are a lot easier that others. If it's a movie challenge it could be something like 5 points per movie. 5 points could be the standard "easy" challenge then we would have to decide how many points non-movie related challenges could be. I think a 5 to 50 point system would work best. Nothing below 5 and nothing above 50. If it's a movie challenge 5 per movie. What do you guys think?
Also it will be easier to award points after the challenge is completed. There are a bazillion challenges already and I'm not giving them all points. That's a lot of work for something that may or may not happen.
I'm working on half of Seanc's challenge now. Should be done in a couple of days.

ALL THAT IN ONE YEAR?!
Plus:
- Participated in MoFo Survivor several times (even came in 6th place in the second one!)
- Countless movie commentaries (and Sex & The City) that I did.
- Juggled between this name and several alternate identities (apparently)
- Managed to get one of those identities banned permanently
- Co-hosted the first MoFies with Rodent
- Played in several song tournaments
- Fussed a lot about Asian movies and other things in several movie countdowns
- Banged the gong thousands of times
- Unleashed a curse on the site, killing Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Williams, Joan Rivers and others
- Made countless jokes about Rodent and Miss Vicky and others
- Read an entire review written by JayDee (and nobody challenged me, either)
- Hosted a prom
- My Top MoFos and Top Movie Stars Countdown
- Countless behind the scenes things, including helping Yoda test the new layout
- Countless other things I'm probably forgetting
- Bathed Captain Spaulding nightly
GOD. Does anyone else do as much as I do around here?!
I have one more thread I might make before the year is over, but in 2015, I might take up Suspect's challenge of no more threads (like that'll happen).

I know that most of you won't agree with me, but I thought it was too long, and kind of boring, but I liked the music.
Would the 1966 TV version of Brigadoon count for "B", or does it have to be a "real" movie?
