+ rep for ignoring matt's advice. Write them out properly, include pics and, most importantly, why you like the film/what it means to you.

I quite like Tango & Cash, but it ruins it all with the last 20 minutes. Not seen the other three and, tbh, not likely to.

Looking forward to it. Bring on the next set.

Lawless was good but went downhill a bit towards the end. The Wolverine was pretty bad and I haven't seen Tango & Cash for years and really have no recollection of whether it was good or not. The Adam Sandler one looks awful but I shouldn't judge it without seeing it ...

Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Grown Up's is Awful but I still really enjoy it. I think it's that bad it's good, plus it's actually very funny. I like Adam Sandler movies anyway, and I didn't expect that pick to go down very well with you lot :).

Thumbs of for Tango and Cash and Lawless. Really agree on the fact that Lawless is underrated, it just suffered from a bad image of Shia Labeouf and lack of advertising. Tango and Cash was one of those few movies starring Sylvester Stallone that I actually liked.

Not on board with the rest though. Grown Ups is dumb and unfunny, and there wasn't any authenticity in Adam Sandler's performance whatsoever. It looked like he just wanted to make some money fast. Don't have much problems with The Wolverine itself, but I think it was an unnecessary film.

Good job so far, looking forward to the rest of your choices.

I sometimes feel like I've the only person who actually enjoyed X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which I actually give a 7/10 to. Granted, not having been invested in Deadpool before hand probably helped, but that's neither here nor there (since I continue to like it even after the fact). Still, I will be the first to admit that The Wolverine was a superior film to it in most respects (Origins still has a better opening credit sequence).

I haven't seen the other three films, but can definitely say that Grown Ups is doubtless one that I'd dislike.

Thumbs up for Jackass, that movie was basically a fun amusement park ride. :D

Majorly don't agree with your Expendables 3 choice, it's the worst of the series in every way and suffers from being a third film that came out from excessive 'milking', also being a PG-13 movie it toned down the gritty action trademark of the series. The first and second one is way better, especially the first one where it was fresh to see old action heroes in one place for the first time.

Haven't seen the rest so don't have any opinions on them.

I have to disagree completely on your take of the first 2 Expendables movies. Number 2 was terrible, Van Damme had the personality of a sponge and was a very boring villain. Mel Gibson on the other hand was a breath of fresh air, he was crazy and very enjoyable to watch.

Number 2 is terrible as well, but it gets points for being true to its roots by sticking to the R rating.

Mel Gibson didn't really give Number 3 a big difference or a reason to watch it.

Just my opinions, don't take it seriously. :)

I haven't seen any of the new ones, but I very much did not like the first Expendables. It was fun to see everybody together, but I felt that the action wasn't engaging, the plot unsatisfying and the character uninteresting. The third one looked a lot more fun, at least.

Under Seige, Jackass, and Roadhouse are all gold.

Captain Spaulding

I watched The Expendables 3 last weekend and I thought it was the weakest of the trilogy. The PG-13 rating played a part in that, but I was also annoyed by how much screen time is wasted on a bunch of MMA fighters trying to be wannabe actors.

I've never seen Under Siege because I hate Steven Seagal.

The Jackass movies make me cringe more than laugh, but it's hard for me to take my eyes off the screen when they're playing.

It seems like Roadhouse is on TV every time I flip through the channels. I've seen bits and pieces of it, but never the whole movie.

Van Damme had the personality of a sponge and was a very boring villain.

If I could roundhouse kick you through the internet right now I totally would.

Totally love Sin City and Con Air so a big thumbs up for those two.

While Tokyo Drift did have some decent action it was to me the weakest film of the series as and it seemed like it was desperately trying to be strong by putting in lots of hot girls and flashy drifts without having the basics planned out.

Got to see Planes because of my very young cousins and I found it lacking the heart a lot of Disney films.

Arcanis
12-15-14, 09:22 AM
Cars was the first time that I doubted e infalibility of Pixar, and Planes seemed like more of the same: pandering toward kids instead of making universally good movies. I haven't seen Cars 2 nor neither Planes film because they sadly don't look appealing to me at all. Still, there is obviously an audience for it, based on its inclusion here and Ebert's review of it.

Sin City is another favorite of mine. It's sadly been excised from my own top 100 this year, but it's never-the-less an amazing film with the hyper-stylized aesthetic that I typically love.

Finally, somebody else who loves The Amazing Spider-Man. They finally injected the wit, humor and fun from the franchise into the films. Andrew Garfield is fantastic in his role and Emma Stone easily gives him a run for his money.

Frozen is also awesome.

Captain Spaulding
12-15-14, 10:37 PM
Never seen Planes or Tokyo Drift. I didn't particularly care for Cars, and I assume Planes is much worse. Not a fan of The Fast and the Furious franchise, so I didn't bother watching Tokyo Drift since it felt like a direct-to-video entry without the involvement of Walker or Vin Diesel.

I like Sin City and I love Con Air, which is one of my favorite action movies.

As bad as Spider-Man 3 was, I'd still rather watch that than The Amazing Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield gets on my nerves. Give me Tobey Maguire any day.

The Lost Boys is fun, but I've never loved it. I think I'd be much more fond of it if I had seen it in my youth.

I liked Frozen a lot more than I expected to. Very good movie.

I guess including Universal Soldier on your list makes up for the disparaging remarks you made about Van Damme earlier.

Rep for Universal Solider and Frozen. These two movies are very different, but both gave me a fun experience and Frozen made me interested in Disney films once again which I had forgotten for a while.

The Amazing Spider-Man was a very average movie for me, nothing really special stood out that may have convinced me to believe the new trilogy would be good as the old one.

Haven't seen The Lost Boys but since you said there's no Twlight-type teen romance (which I HATE) I may watch it.

I'm going to say something now that I never thought I'd have to say, however, the last few years seem to've made it necessary. Twilight is not the norm for vampire films. Pretty much any vampire film which is recommended to you that's made before Twilight, isn't like Twilight.

I watched The Lego Movie recently. I liked it more than I thought I would, but certainly nowhere near as much as seemingly everyone else on the planet. It's funnier than expected, but think it would have worked better as a short film.

Not a fan of Wanted or Watchmen.

I enjoy the Rocky movies as a whole, but none of them are personal favorites. If you had to choose just one from the series, which would it be?

I've always liked the concept of Nightmare on Elm Street and the character of Freddy Kruger more than the movies themselves. Dream Warriors is my personal favorite of the series, although I haven't seen New Nighmare yet.

Predator is machismo at its finest. One of my favorite action movies.

It's been a long time since I've watched Die Hard With a Vengeance, but I remember liking it. It's my second favorite of the Die Hard series.

I enjoyed Cloverfield when I saw it in the theater, but I've never had any interest in re-visiting it.

Warrior transcends the clichés in its script thanks to very strong performances. It's better than most sports movies, but nothing special, in my opinion.

I just watched Top Gun for the first time earlier this week. I didn't care much for it. I'd heard about the volleyball scene, but the entire movie is homoerotic, in my opinion. I kept waiting for Cruise and Kilmer to start boning each other every time they shared a scene. It was like the Nightmare on Elm Street 2 version of a "Be All You Can Be" commercial.

I expect I'll enjoy Casino a lot more on a second watch, but it's currently one of my least favorites from Scorsese.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day would make my top 100, but not the first film. I chalk that up to having seen the sequel many times as a kid, whereas I never watched the first movie until just a few years ago.

The Lion King is awesome. It was #2 on my list for the Animation Countdown. Hakuna matata.

Step Brothers has grown on me. I disliked it the first time I watched it, but I've caught bits and pieces of it on TV over the years and I always find myself chuckling. Ferrell and Reilly have great chemistry, although I'm a bigger fan of their work in Talladega Nights.

My admiration for Reservoir Dogs has faded over time, but it's certainly a great film.

Shaun of the Dead is witty awesomeness, Cape Fear (though the original is superior) is great OTT fun with a menacing De Niro performance and The Guest (recent watch) is a cool little turn for the normally methodical psycho-genre. Taken is alright as well.

Lots of good stuff, Optimus.:cool:

I never would've expected Liam Neeson to transform into one of Hollywood's biggest bad asses, but he fits the role perfectly. Taken is one of the better action movies of the last few years.

Shaun of the Dead is hilarious. One of my favorite comedies and one of my favorite zombie films rolled into one.

Kung Fu Panda sneaked onto the bottom of my animation list, so I'm a fan, although I obviously don't love it as much as you do.

Cape Fear is a good movie, but one of Scorsese's weaker efforts. I loved De Niro's over-the-top performance, but the movie dragged at times.

I haven't seen The Guest, but it looks like something I'd like. I've seen some people compare it to Drive. Is that an apt comparison?

Superbad is hilarious. If you own the DVD, I highly recommend listening to the commentary, which is almost as funny as the movie itself.

Batman is my favorite superhero film, but I've never loved Batman Returns as much. Granted, I haven't seen it in probably fifteen years or more, so I owe it a re-watch.

Toy Story is my favorite animated film. Drive is one of my favorite films of the new millennium. Prisoners is one of my favorite films from 2013.

I'm not a fan of The Warriors, although I can see the appeal. Maybe if I had watched it when I was younger . . .

American Gangster was a bit of return-to-form for Ridley Scott. I think it's a very good film, although I've only watched it once. I actually bought it cheap on Black Friday a couple of years ago but it's still sitting in the plastic.

Starship Troopers was a pleasant surprise. I expected to hate it, but it's a very entertaining movie. Beneath its dumb exterior, it is surprisingly smart.

That being said, I'll throw my personal opinion of course, but again, it's not my list. :p I like a lot of the films, but there is some strange choices here and there that I personally have a hard time understanding why they are there, together with some really amazing films. Way to go, Optimus. Quite a few nice picks here and some that are a lot of favorites of mine. Of the more recent picks you've posted, The Warriors is a particular favorite of mine. I just picked up the original DVD on eBay (as opposed to the fairly reviled Director's cut, which Walter Hill turned into a comic book, with captions etc.). Can't wait to watch it (the original) again.

Good on ya for posting what you like and not bending to just Oscar-bait (I hate that phrase, why did I use it?) films. I like all genres of film, but if they take an action-oriented, sci-fi, or comedic slant, I'm very cool with that. No pressure. :)

I have to repeat what a few people have stated. Good for you on posting the movies you like and staying true to you. Some of the first few movies would have been on my least favorite least lol. Your movies have gotten better as the list has approached the mid way (just my opinion and what does that really amount too? haha)

I really need to get my list together. I have a 100 down that I keep going back too. I need to just sac up and put it on here already think I've been on here for close to 3 years now. Have to figure out a format, i think I just got a really neat idea. A lot of self loathing goes into my list lol. I feel like people who hate on Prometheus usually don't give very strong arguments, leaving them sounding like pretentious hipsters. Just saying. I mean, yeah, the execution was bad, but c'mon, Joss Whedon... Pro-meaningless? Really? Meaningless? Who are you, Ridley Scott? How would you know it's meaningless? The guy made tons more than you ever did, and you called his work "meaningless"?

As one professional like him to another like Scott, that's very unprofessional and insulting to an experienced veteran like Ridley Scott. What did Joss do? Avengers and Buffy. Wow.

Holy crap, you are surely optimizing the greatness of your list here? :p

Seriously though, once again we got some great movies on our hands! T2 is not only one of the greatest sequels ever made, but as an adventurous action movie it beats out its competition with ease. One of the few sequels who can compare you also got there on your list, and that is of course Aliens! A movie I just had the pleasure of experiencing on the big screen - what a joy that was!

Then there's Fight Club, a movie that just gets better and better with each viewing because of its elegantly structured story with so much detail that you won't ever catch everything with one watch. A crazy film, and a crazy-good film as well... The Mist is the odd one out here in my opinion, because though I like it, it is a little campy (probably done purposely) and a little "meh" especially against the others you have there.

But overall another great combo of movies, Optimus, with short and precise write-ups!

It's been a long time since I commented in here, so this might take awhile . . .

I respect Raging Bull more than I like it. Technically speaking, it's arguably Scorsese's greatest accomplishment and De Niro gives one of the most powerful performance of all-time, yet as a huge fan of both men, I feel somewhat guilty for not liking the movie more than I do. So far I've only seen the movie once, but I bought a two-disc special edition a few months ago so that I can watch it a few more times and hopefully fall in love with it. After all, it took me a second viewing to fall in love with Apocalypse Now and Aguirre, the Wrath of God and several others that I now consider all-time favorites, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Raging Bull follows the same pattern. As a Scorsese fan, it's good to see Goodfellas and The Departed also appear on your list.

Jurassic Park is a fun movie that I haven't seen in probably 15+ years. Ever since JayDee reviewed it awhile back, I've been meaning to revisit it to see how it holds up.

Never seen Navy Seals. It looks like Red Dawn, which is another movie I haven't seen. If there's one thing lacking in my cinematic knowledge, it's tiger blood. I've seen very few of Charlie Sheen's films, even beloved ones like Young Guns and Major League.

Seeing Grindhouse in theaters with the double bill and the fake trailers and commercials is one of the most fun experiences I've had in a theater. Even though I enjoyed Death Proof on that initial viewing, I was still pretty disappointed. My estimation of it rose after seeing the extended version on DVD, which inserted some of the best scenes in the film that were missing in the theatrical cut. I agree with QT that it's his weakest film (and by a sizable margin, too). The dialogue lacks his usual panache and some scenes drag on far too long, but the car chase is edge-of-your-seat amazing and I very much enjoy the look and feel of the film.

I watched the entire Lethal Weapon series for the first time a few months ago. I thought the first film was great and one of the most essential examples of a buddy-cop film. The second one was also a lot of fun and very entertaining. Then I thought the series took a major nosedive with the third and fourth entries.

I think Jaws is a very good film, but I have no particular love for it.

Unforgiven is one of the best films to show up on your list so far. An essential western and a perfect swan song for Eastwood as a gunslinger. It deconstructs the western myth and brings it into the real world while still delivering enough quick-draw action and patented Eastwood stare downs to conjure fond memories of the Man With No Name. For me, Unforgiven is a Top 20 favorite.

The Dark Knight and Fight Club are two of the most overrated movies of our time. I like both movies, but the amount of praise they get is unwarranted, in my opinion.

Toy Story 2 made my list for the Animated Films Countdown, although I don't like it as much as the first film. Shoot Em Up is a fun, silly, ridiculously over-the-top action film, although I've never had any desire to revisit it. Battleship is terrible, but you already know that. ;)

Donnie Brasco is a very underrated gangster film, although I don't know if I'd be as fond of it if I didn't already have such a man crush on Johnny Depp. Cool to see it so high on your list.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of the better summer blockbusters to come along in recent memory. I remember before its release when everyone, including myself, assumed it would suck, then it came out and greatly surpassed everyone's expectations. It's great to see a blockbuster put so much emphasis on its characters, even if those characters are CGI apes. Last year's Dawn was also very good, although I still prefer Rise by a slight margin.

I watched True Romance after discovering Pulp Fiction and subsequently becoming obsessed with everything Quentin Tarantino, but I found the movie somewhat disappointing. I don't remember much about it anymore, so I need to give it another chance.

Prometheus was such a huge disappointment for me. In terms of visual splendor, the film is incredibly impressive, but the script is terrible. I'm not usually one to complain about the actions of characters in films, but when you've got scientists going all coochie-coo on deadly-looking alien serpents, well, it's hard not to roll your eyes.

I haven't seen Face/Off since I was a kid, but I used to like it a lot, although I preferred Con Air and The Rock from around the same time period. It's hard to go wrong with The Cage, although apparently most people disagree with that statement.

Not a fan of any of the Fast and Furious movies, but several members have been singing their praises lately, so you're not alone in loving them.

Terminator 2 and Aliens are two of the greatest action films of all-time, two of the greatest sequels of all-time, and two of the greatest science-films of all-time. Needless to say, they're both pretty bad ass. Of the two, I prefer Terminator 2, which is the best of its series, whereas I will always prefer the claustrophobic horror of Alien to its balls-to-the-wall, shoot-em-up sequel.

I love The Mist, which features one of my favorite endings of all-time. I keep meaning to watch the black-and-white version that came with the two-disc DVD I bought, since that's how Darabont intended the film to be shown and I'm sure it helps to hide some of the dodgy CGI.

Phew. That was exhausting.

By the way, I'm glad you switched back to your old format. Even if you just write two or three sentences, I'd rather read your own thoughts on your favorites rather than impersonal movie trivia.

Wow, I feel totally left out right now. My write-up, on my standards, is quite lengthy but soon after MM posts a longer write-up, then Captain Spaulding shows up and... bang! Optimus is blown away and doesn't give a damn about mine. :p:D. Also;

Fair enough. Maybe I didn't gave it a chance. Turned it off at the first song. There is so much more to watch. Maybe when I have kids...

Terminator 2 is easily the best Terminator movie in the franchise

I've been meaning to see this for ages... I enjoyed the first one quite a lot.

Fight Club is gritty, dark, brutal, and very strange and I love it. I've seen this movie about a dozen times now and I love it even more with each viewing.
I loved Fight Club, it's definitely in my top 100 as well... such a great cast and probably one of the best by David Fincher. I think I've only seen it once, or maybe twice so I want to rewatch it, but it's kinda hard to find a balance between new movies and rewatches.

Aliens is my favourite of the Alien franchise. Partly to do with the fact I love action movies and this is certainly that. With a mix of horror and action Aliens is just badass from the get go. I know a lot of people think the first movie is the strongest, but this will always mine.
I haven't seen the others in the franchise that came out after Aliens, but it's nice too see that someone agrees that the second one was better than the first :)

I took a quick look on your list and I was surprised to see Tokyo Drift on there... I love the franchise but I thought the third one was the weakest.
You have so many of my favorites in your list :D Lawless and Warrior are great choices... I think Tom Hardy is one of the best actors of the 'new generation' ( I don't know if that is an appropriate choice of words) and I'm looking forward to see how he evolves... I hope he'll keep making good choices.
The Lion King was also my favorite as a child... I had it on VHS and used to watch it over and over again haha. A few years ago when I visited the USA I had the chance to see it in the theater and it was still awesome and made me feel like a kid again.
Okay I'm gonna stop.. the post is getting too big.

^^^^^

I like Tokoyo Drift just because it's a little different from the other Fast And Furious movies. It's probably the most cheesy out the lot, but I like that it's more about Car Racing than the action. It's sort of like a teen movie with cool cars and hot girls. :).

I'd agree that Tom Hardy is one of the best actors around at the moment. His and Joel Edgerton's performances in Warrior where fantastic. I also love his performance in Bronson. Such a raw and talented actor.

And what , you haven't seen Terminator 2?. Getting watching it tonight.

Aliens has always been a favorite of mine. Not many movies can match the excitement it brings.

Love The Mist too, easily one of my favorite endings.

I like T2 less than I used to. I still think it's great, but I prefer the first one.

Didn't care much for Fight Club the first time, but it has really grown on me.

+ rep because my love for Scarface is that strong. I thought Inception was alright. I liked it well enough, while Snatch? Well.... At least it's not Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. I think that's the most positive thing I can say about it.

Captain Spaulding

I think I've seen Snatch. Or maybe it was Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Doesn't matter. All those Guy Ritchie movies suck.

I'm not a rapper or a gangster, so I don't think Scarface is a masterpiece, but it is a very entertaining, bombastic film. Getting to play out a bastardized version of it in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was pretty fun. "Say hello to my little friend" is what I say to people before dropping my pants.

The Prestige is my favorite Nolan, but I don't dispute the notion that Inception is his best. (Haven't seen Interstellar yet.)

I like Snatch as much as Lock, Stock, and two Smoking Barrels which is in my Top 50.

Scarface is the ideal gangster movie for me. That's why I don't like The Godfather. :p

Inception is kind of overrated. At first you're blown away by the dream gimmick, especially when watching in theaters (like I did) and give it a high rating. However when rewatching you realize some of the flaws and lack of character development. I'm currently resting at a 3.5.

Snatch, Scarface, Inception - 3 great movies there for various reasons!

Snatch is witty, funny and totally chaotic with fun visuals, great dialogue and a wide range of characters all played really well, some even great. I love that film, always a fun time, and it's much preffered to Lock, Stock for me.

Scarface is a film I've only seen once, but of course I'm planning on giving it many watches more. It's one of those movies I definitely liked on the first watch, and I could see why it got all the praise, but still I wasn't totally captured by it. On the other hand, it looks to be one of those films which only gets better with time.

Inception is once again Nolan delivering a quality blockbuster with more underneath. I think the idea and overall story is great, and it's clear to see it was a film he worked on for many years. Always a great rewatch to me.

I've never really watched anything Star Trek, but I heard those new movies are pretty good.

Seen Jaws but not Jaws 2, so I can't say what I thought of that one.

I have seen 28 Days Later, I thought it was decent but not mind-blowing. Well the running zombies were kinda mind-blowing, wasn't it the first movie to have running zombies?

I rarely like zombie movies but 28 Days Later is awesome... I'm very interested to see Ex Machina from the same writer.

Captain Spaulding

I've never watched a single episode of Star Trek, either, but I also enjoyed the movie. I think it does a great job of appealing to fans who aren't familiar with the series. Very fast-paced and action-packed.

You're the first person I've ever seen who likes Jaws 2 more than Jaws. I'm not as enamored with Jaws as most people, and I've never seen any of the sequels, so I can't really comment, but  for having the balls to admit such an unpopular opinion.

I love 28 Days Later. My favorite zombie movie, even if they aren't technically zombies. I think it's responsible for injecting life back into the sub-genre. At the time of its release, zombies movies seemed like a thing of the past, shuffling along like their namesake, but there's been a gazillion movies and shows and books and comics over the last decade or so. I went from loving zombies to now being burnt out on them.
