View Full Version : R.P. McMurphy Presents: The Dark Side of The 80's (and other stuff)

R.P. McMurphy
09-23-14, 11:43 PM
I wanted to get on this 80's top 50 bandwagon and also do something a little different. I will be posting some of my favorite punk, post-punk, new wave, goth and darkwave songs. I will also include a few that don't really fall into that category but are still 80's jams that I love. I tried to stay away from the mainstream, for the most part so hopefully some of you will get to check out some new (to you) stuff.

I am also bending the decade rule a bit by allowing a few (only a few) submissions that fell one year on either side of the decade, so you will see a couple from 1979 and a couple from 1990. In my opinion, it's still 80's and this is my list so I can break the rules!

I will be posting 5 songs each day (possibly more if I'm not feeling especially lazy). I will also be attempting to steal Sexy Celebrity's format for his 80's list because it is just so darn nice to look at. I'm a little new to all the code stuff, so please bear with me if I don't get it just right.

That's all, thanks for looking and I hope you guys dig!

Most of this isn't really my type of music, but I did kind of like the Tears for Fears song, and the OMD song. I only know one song from each of those artists.

I think "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears was in the movie Real Genius, and I like the song "If You Leave" by OMD, which I think was in the movie Pretty in Pink.

Did they also sing the song "Pretty in Pink" from the movie of the same name?

Thanks, man! I'm excited to be doing this list and sharing. Still racking my brain and adjusting the list to try and make sure I don't leave anything out that deserves to be on. I love the Furs too and trying to narrow it down to one or maybe two of their songs is tough.

I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure it was.

I really regret nominating them now because of the future tournament. Because of me they won't be eligible and they might have fared better in a tournament where you can't nominate Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. :)

R.P. McMurphy
09-25-14, 03:21 AM
The first time I heard this song, it was instantly familiar. Sometimes you just have those strange moments in life, wether it's meeting someone for the first time and they feel familiar or you hear something and you just connect with it and it feels like it's always been part of you or was meant for you...or something stupid like that. Anyway, that feeling is what this song is to me. R.I.P. Ian Curtis.

New Order-Leave Me Alone

Released:1983

One of my favorite New Order songs from one of my favorite albums of theirs, Power,Corruption & Lies. New Order has always been one of my favorite groups. Bernard Sumner does not have the best vocal abilities (sometimes it's downright grating) and not always the strongest lyrics, but their sound was one of a kind. Also, for Joy Division to tragically lose their singer/songwriter and to then continue on and really come into their own, get out from under the looming shadow of Joy Division and go on to become pioneers in their own right a hugely influential band? Impressive stuff. Love them.

I don't listen to Guns N' Roses, but I've heard some country versions of their songs. You would be amazed at how many country singers record cover versions of Guns N' Roses songs. I think Tate Stevens even sang one the year he won "The X Factor".

R.P. McMurphy

That's pretty funny, gb. I could imagine a lot of their songs lend themselves quite nicely to a country style, especially their song "I used to love her". It's already lyrically a country song, pretty much.

Yeah, if you search YouTube you can probably find some of them. They're usually live versions sung in concert. Jason Aldean sang "Sweet Child of Mine" and Carrie Underwood sang "Paradise City". Those are both Guns N' Roses songs, aren't they?

Hubby's been listening to your music thread for a while, and he said to give you rep for the following songs:

The Rolling Stones - No Use In Crying
The Cars - Since You're Gone
Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place
Blondie - Atomic

Metallica - Battery. He has the album. He said that he saw them back when they were nobody opening for Ozzy, and he thought they were great back then.

Hall and Oates- Out of Touch (I already gave you rep for Hall & Oates, but he likes that song too.)

I love seeing new artists before they become popular. You get to see them grow and watch their careers develop.

Many years ago, I went to a concert at a small venue here on Long Island, and the opening act was a young singer who hadn't made a name for himself yet, but he gave one of the best performances I've ever seen. His name was Garth Brooks.

Another young unknown artist I saw in Texas before she became popular was Martina McBride. You could watch her on stage, and you just knew that she would be a star someday.

Hubby likes the Rolling Stones, but I'm not a fan of theirs. I do like their song "Ruby Tuesday", but I think that's the only song of theirs that I like. (That is a Stones song, isn't it?)

I remember when Windows 95 was released, and Microsoft used their song "Start Me Up" to advertise it, (because of the new "Start" button), but the running joke in the computer industry was that Microsoft used the right band, but the wrong song. They should have used their song "I Can't Get No Satisfaction".

Rad about seeing Garth that long ago! And I agree with you that sometimes you can just see a person or a band and just tell that they are going to be big. They have a little something called "It' haha

Yes, that is one of their songs. And it's always interesting when big companies use songs to advertise their product just because they want to have that one particular line (like "Start me up")but the rest of the song, most of the time would probably be detrimental to their advertising campaign if the actual song meaning were evident, in Microsoft's case, a song about dirty hot sex! I see it so often and just makes me laugh.

Yeah, Microsoft isn't the brightest company in the world when it comes to stuff like that. They rarely think things through.

Haha! I love that you chose this. At that time the late 70s we lived in Hackney then in West Ham, those guys played around the place. Not read anything about them for years .

I want to travel to the UK so badly and see all the old clubs and neighborhoods where punk and post punk was born! Did you see many shows in that era, Christine??

Hi RP, not many big concerts. Saw Queen in a free gig in Hyde Park, and Dylan at Earls Court twice, but we lived in the East End of London and that was our world . Back in those days they were still building council houses so no one wanted to live in the old sink estates so they let off the flats to anyone young , so that's were we moved to. In amongst the original Cockneys we did loads of community stuff with them, It was brilliant, setting up a community centre, having festivals on Hackney Marshes, running bars. We saw loads of bands in local pubs, so all my memories are of local bands. Anyone could sing in one, mainly cos you didn't need to be in tune or play well ;) we also saw some pub Rock bands that were around at the time like Dr Feelgood. tbh its a long time ago, but I remember seeing Oxy and the Morons cos they were around all the time bring local, and the reggae band Black Slate.
There was an amazing vibe at that time in London, kind of edgy. I don't recognise the East End the few times I've been back. It's full of hipsters!

I'm not a huge fan of metal, but I really dig your taste in post-punk and guitar pop. The Smiths, Talking Heads, New Order, The Church.

Just posting this one for tonight. I'm sure everyone is asleep or out partying (it's 11pm on Saturday night for me). Just felt like posting one of my favorites on this shabby list of mine. Enjoy, nerds.

Back to it! I took a few weeks off for a couple rerasons: 1. I'm extraordinarily lazy. 2. There were so many other music threads at the time that I decided to be selfish and wait to finish mine so it wasn't (quite as) overlooked. So here we go, on with the list! (and for some of you, the suffering, I'm sure :modest: )

I don't know much about A Flock of Seagulls, except that my sister used to listen to them. (I think her favorite song was "I Ran".)

My only memory of them is when my sister would get into an argument with my mother, my sister would threaten to have her hair styled just like the singer in A Flock of Seagulls. (The second guy in from the left who kind of looks like a blonde version of Wolverine. )

Sinead O'Connor- Nothing Compares 2 U

Released:1990

Though this song was originally written by Prince, it was really made a mainstream smash hit in 1990 by Sinead. Get it, girl.

That is a pretty devastating threat to a parent! haha I think the song "I Ran" is easily their most known song and their biggest hit. It's sad to me because they actually have MUCH better songs (the 2 songs of theirs that I have on this list) but they will forever be over-shadowed by that dam "I Ran" song. Just a shame really.

You have some good tunes here... I think Im a bit older than you.... I never was much into 80's hair bands... I prefer southern rock or just rock..... 80's hair bands came out in my junior or senior year of high school.. I was a bit older school than that..... I listed to pretty much anything else in the 80's... was never a fan of rap/hip hop or country tho....

Thanks, MovieGal. What do you mean by "hair bands" tho? When I think of 80's hair bands, I think Posion and The Scorpions, like Glam Rock or, my personal favorite term, Butt Rock :D I don't think I have anything like that on here but happy that you like the list and thanks for all the rep :)

the difference between the Who and Motley Crue... I would rather listen to The Who, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Styx than Poison, Ratt and Whitesnake.
