1. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms vs Mark Collie - Even the Man in the Moon is Crying
Mark Collie's song was good but I liked ol' Flatt and Scruggs more
2. Dwight Yoakam - Honky Tonk Man vs Roger Miller-King of the Road
3. The Rolling Stones- Girl with the Faraway Eyes vs Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
Voting for Bill cos I really like him but I wouldn't call him a country singer. He wrote this song and won a grammy for best R&B song . The Stones are taking the piss, you can see it in their faces
4. Kenny Rogers - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town vs One's On the Way - Loretta Lynn
Love this song.
5. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty vs Merle Haggard – Working Mans Blues
This is one of Merle's best. Always think of my dad when I play this
6. Clay Davidson - I Can't Lie To Me vs Montgomery Gentry - Lonely and Gone
interesting. Not heard either of these singers before but like them both. Hard to chose but I like Gentry's voice more
7. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues vs Loretta Lynn - Fist City
8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again vs The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down-The Band
Love Willie Nelson, but there's always something ramshackle about The Band that's really appealing

But have you spent much time listening to country, Sexy? My dad used to watch CMT almost 24/7 and they got played a lot. They have several albums and apparently have a new single out. I only really liked their album Tattoos and Scars, though.
Not music related, but apparently Troy Gentry is a P.O.S. (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=2e5_1288136726) so actually I'm kind of glad they're going to lose now.

For me, my mother was the CMT watcher. She loves country. She has a million country CDs. But I had never heard of either of them. All things country related go in one ear and out the other with me. It's not that country is necessarily a bad genre, but it was absolutely overbearing growing up and hearing the country CDs. Plus it's all very religious and I don't care for that.

Ha. My dad started watching CMT when I was in my teens because MTV and VH1 quit playing music. It actually really annoyed my mom when he started doing that. She forbade my brother and I to listen to country or rap when we were kids because she didn't want to have to hear it but she couldn't stop my dad.
Too bad your dad wasn't a rap fan instead.

Too bad your dad wasn't a rap fan instead.
Yeah, he's definitely not a rap fan.
I still managed to annoy the crap out of my mom though with my non-country and non-rap music listening. At one point she pounded on my bedroom door and begged me to play something other than Fleetwood Mac.

Though for the record, I only really like Andre's stuff. Big Boi not so much.
Tough call for me, I am a bigger Andre fan for sure and find him more talented, but I love Speakerboxxx and listen to it more than The Love Below actually.
Also shocked you have a Shakira album.

Sir Lucius Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty is by far the best solo album either one of the him has recorded though. Big Boi's follow up album to that sucked though.

Terribly disappointed that the Waylon Jennings song is already out.

Whatcha waitin' for?
I actually couldn't remember how that song goes, so I had to find it on Youtube and am playing it now. My favorite songs from that CD are:
- What You Waiting For? (but I forgot how it sounds for some reason just now)
- Rich Girl (one of the best)
- Hollaback Girl
- Bubble Pop Electric
- Harajuku Girls
- Serious
- Danger Zone
That's all of them but 5 songs.
"Cool" is good, too, but I'm not gonna include it as a favorite.
The others are probably good, too, but I can't remember them exactly. I'll have to listen to them. The others have stayed in my mind, though. I used to have this on CD, but not anymore. I need to get it again. Well, maybe.
Sir Lucius Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty is by far the best solo album either one of the him has recorded though. Big Boi's follow up album to that sucked though.
Yeah Big Boi is still damned good, I just say Andre is more talented because he plays guitar and is a very talented musician. But Big Boi's got skills fo sho.

Actually, "Harajuku Girls" isn't one of the best.
The very best are Rich Girl, Bubble Pop Electric, Serious and Danger Zone. Those mean the most to me.

Roy Clark is definitely a country artist, but "Yesterday, When I Was Young" is one of those songs that's not really country, but it's considered country because it's sung by a country artist. It's really closer to pop than country, but I'd rather hear that in a country tournament than The Rolling Stones or Tom Petty.

1. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zDgYN5qeG4Y) I didn't particularly care for either of these songs, so I went with the one I didn't care for the least.
2. Roger Miller-King of the Road (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OmOe27SJ3Yc)
3. The Rolling Stones- Girl with the Faraway Eyes (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VyK1bZZ7E-s) I know the Stones aren't a country band but this song is very country and I love it...so there. Also, the Bill Withers song is 100% blues and not country. Just one man's observation.
4. Kenny Rogers - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4EJGZt3X6uU) This song is quite heartbreaking, as good country should be.
5. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Og1QRtcWdEY) Great song and the other isn't one of my favorite Merle songs
6. Montgomery Gentry - Lonely and Gone (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vqXRb3L7qY8) Another round where I didn't really care for either. Not my type of country music, I suppose
7. Loretta Lynn - Fist City (m.youtube.com/watch?v=_UIFjcGY_Zs) Honestly, Johnny Cash's most overrated song and I love the this Loretta song
8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1TD_pSeNelU)

There was a time when she was mine in Nineteen-Eighty-Two.

I intentionally didn't nominate any of the old, classic country songs because I knew that there would already be a lot of it being nominated, and it would dominate the final rounds.
I wish there was some more modern country in this tournament, but apparently most of you don't like the modern songs. Classic country is great, but a lot of it has been so overplayed over the years that it's become kind of mainstream. I was hoping there would be a better mix in this tournament than what I've heard so far.
Most of the songs that I'm hearing in this tournament are the same ones that I've heard all my life. They're great songs, but I was hoping to hear some variety. Apparently everyone just plays these tournaments to win, not just for the fun of listening to some new stuff.

I can only speak for myself, GB but I simply nominated songs that I love and are near and dear to my heart. Also, and I'm only hypothesizing here, I get the feeling there are not a lot of hardcore country music fans here, so I would guess that it's not a matter of people playing to win so much as it is a matter of everyone is just nominating what they know. Clearly, country music is one of your preferred musical generes, thus, your knowledge of more modern country is likely much more expansive than most people here and you are able to draw on that more so than a lot of other members.

I don't think that's true. I think everyone nominates songs they like and then hope they will win. I nominated a lot of old country because that is what I like. I also nominated two alt/country songs because I like that too.
I think for a lot of us we are listening to a lot of new stuff. You just happen to know a lot more about country music than we do. There are quite a few songs I am hearing for the first time.
In the other tournaments most of the songs I nominate I do so knowing I have no chance of them getting past the second round. I might nominate something more universally liked just to have a horse in the race for a few rounds, but it's still a song I like a lot. Not that I wouldn't like to win, but I don't play to win.

Every song that I nominated is "near and dear to my heart" as well. It would have been easy for me to chose a handful of classics that were pretty much guaranteed to make it to the later rounds, and maybe even to the final round, but that wasn't my goal. I didn't expect most of my songs to get past the first round or two, but my hope is that maybe a few people will hear the beauty of country music in them, and start exploring the genre on their own.
And, yes, country music is my preferred genre of music, and it has been for my entire life. (Which isn't easy being born and raised in New York.)
One of the things that I love about country music is that real country music is about the words, and the emotion that the songs bring out in the listeners. The songs that I chose were carefully selected because of the emotional attachment that I have to each of those songs.

Please understand that I'm not complaining about the nominations. I love most of the songs that were nominated, and obviously they're classic country songs. I'm just expressing my thoughts about the songs that were chosen, and it's possible that I'm wrong about why people chose them.
One of the things that I love about these song tournaments, (as well as the movie tournaments), is that I get to hear songs that I've never heard before. I was hoping that would happen in the country tournament as well, but it seems that I'm probably the only country music diehard here, so I'm not hearing a lot of songs that I haven't heard all my life. But I'm still enjoying listening to them. That's one of the reasons that I'm never the first person to vote. I listen to every song in each match-up before I vote, even if I've heard it hundreds of times before. :)

I am less enthusiastic about this set than yesterday's, but I'll power through.
1. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms vs Mark Collie - Even the Man in the Moon is Crying
I like Flatt and Scruggs. That banjo. That fiddle. I don't like the 90s country style, so Mark Collie is a no-go for me.
2. Dwight Yoakam - Honky Tonk Man vs Roger Miller-King of the Road
Dammit. One of my noms against a classic. Sorry, Roger. I ain't got no cigarettes. You are going to win anyway.
3. The Rolling Stones- Girl with the Faraway Eyes vs Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
On paper, this looks like the least country match-up I've ever seen. Mick Jagger playing Forrest Gump isn't my thing. Bill Withers doesn't seem like country, but he gets my vote anyway.
4. Kenny Rogers - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town vs One's On the Way - Loretta Lynn
I love Loretta's accent. This song is a little gimmicky for me though. Not a fan of Kenny Rogers.
5. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty vs Merle Haggard – Working Mans Blues
This is quite the match-up. Merle vs Conway. Normally it's Merle over Conway, but I don't care for that particular Merle performance.
6. Clay Davidson - I Can't Lie To Me vs Montgomery Gentry - Lonely and Gone
Don't like Montgomery Gentry. I don't recognize Clay Davidson by name. I don't care for his song either. Hmmm. I have to pick one, so I will go with the guy who didn't kill a tame bear for the f*ck of it..
7. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues vs Loretta Lynn - Fist City
Crap. Crap. Crap. This should be the final, not a first round match-up. Damn you, Random.org
8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again vs The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down-The Band
I didn't even think to nominate The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. Excellent nomination. I like Willie's Red Headed Stranger album, I don't like On the Road Again.

1. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms vs Mark Collie - Even the Man in the Moon is Crying
I just seem to prefer older country
2. Dwight Yoakam - Honky Tonk Man vs Roger Miller-King of the Road
Older country again
3. The Rolling Stones- Girl with the Faraway Eyes vs Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
Can't believe I didn't think to nominate this song from my favorite band. For the record, the title is "Far Away Eyes"
4. Kenny Rogers - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town vs One's On the Way - Loretta Lynn
Very close*
5. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty vs Merle Haggard – Working Mans Blues
I seem to like Haggard
6. Clay Davidson - I Can't Lie To Me vs Montgomery Gentry - Lonely and Gone
Liked the other one too
7. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues vs Loretta Lynn - Fist City
Love Lynn but a tough draw
8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again vs The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down-The Band

I know more than half of the songs listed and, at any rate, I can tell if I like a song very quickly, at most a verse and chorus once. A judgement between competing songs can be very quick for me. And if a song doesn't really appeal to me I won't continue to listen once I've made that determination.

A lot of country songs are all about the lyrics. If you're not listening to the whole song, you're not giving it a fair chance.

Maybe, but I disagree. There's always music you hear on the radio when your flipping stations or whatever -- you listen to a little bit, you decide you don't like it, you move on. Listening to the whole song is not going to make it any better. When I hear someone's particular voice and it's a voice that gets on my nerves, I know I'm not gonna care for that song. If the lyrics or the sound isn't grabbing me, the odds are against it for me picking it. You don't need to hear the whole song. I absolutely believe you can listen to just part of the song.

No, it's not because movies and trailers are two different things. This is more like going into a movie and leaving early because you're sick of it and don't like it. Lots of people do that. Lots of people don't want to waste their time.

This isn't about the "rules". I just think it's unfair to judge a song on the first 30 seconds or minute, just like you shouldn't judge a movie solely by its trailer or a book by its cover.
I'm not saying that you're not allowed to do that. I just think that you shouldn't do that. There's a difference.
I would have to disagree with that. Songs can build up, change up, or have a memorable finish.
How I judge a song may not work for you but, for the most part, I can tell very quickly what a song's about, what it is. Additionally, rare is the song that has more than three parts but you don't have to hear the middle eighth to know whether a song appeals to you, not that many country songs have a bridge. That being said, play a song enough times and it'll grow on you, though something similar could be said about mold.

If it is a song I do not know, then I will listen to it in it's entirety (for the most part), or long enough to make a proper judgement, but I don't think it is necessary to sit and listen to each song all the way through, especially if it is your nomination or if you know the songs well and you can make your vote based on that. Different strokes, GB. Different strokes. That's great if you want to listen to each and every song all the way through but you shouldn't assume people are voting based on song titles or whatever because they aren't doing it the way you are. In the end, the only purpose of these tourneys is fun (and maybe bragging rights if your song wins).

I look at these song tournaments as a chance to listen to music I've never heard before, and maybe find some new favorite songs and/or artists. It's hard to do that if you're not listening to the songs.

I agree that lyrics are vital to country music, but so is the music (it's called Country Music after all, not Country Lyrics) and if the music doesn't appeal to you you're not going to stay around for the words. You can set Shakespeare, Dunne or Pope to music, but I'm turning the station to something else if I don't like the melody.

I do use the song tournaments to discover new music. I've probably discovered more music than I ever have in my life through these games because I've never been much of a music person. I mean, I had never heard of "Gimme Shelter" before until it won Song Tournament 2.
And I definitely do not pick songs just based on song title or whatever. I hear some of it, at least. But, like, if someone's singing doesn't do anything for me -- NEXT! I may treat the voice like a beauty competition -- if I don't like it, bye bye. Or, at least, I listen to the other song and if it's better in some way, I go with it. If not, I may go back to the horrible song that came before it.

I just think that you are not giving people enough credit. Everyone's method may be a bit different but no one would participate in a song tournament if they weren't willing to put effort into their decisions (or maybe they would, I don't know). My point is, you shouldn't criticize people's voting style because you personally think they voted too quickly. For example, several matchups I voted without listening because I knew both songs well and knew which I preferred. No need to listen for me.

5. Earl Thomas Conley - Holding Her and Loving You
I love both songs, but the ETC song is one of my all-time faves, and that John Denver song has been overplayed too much for me.
6. Merle Haggard – Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down
That's not one of my favorite Merle Haggard songs, but I'm not a fan of David Allan Coe either.
7. Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown
One of Flatt & Scruggs best, and I don't really care for Levon Helm's voice.
8. Linda Ronstadt - When Will I Be Loved
I love George Jones, but this is one of my favorite Linda Ronstadt songs.

I wasn't trying to criticize anyone, and if it came across that way, I'm sorry. I was just surprised that the votes started coming in so quickly. It might happen that fast in every tournament, but I've never noticed that before.
No harm, no foul. I just didn't want you to be upset thinking that people were voting willy-nilly and not giving songs a proper chance

1. Terri Clark - You're Easy On The Eyes vs Dolly Parton - Jolene
I'm going to start dressing like Terri Clark. The chick messing with the drummer is cute. Musically this one is no contest.
2. Poncho and Lefty - Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard vs Kenny Rogers - Coward Of The County
Willie is hit or miss with me. I've noticed most of the time it's miss, sadly. It's miss this time. Merle is cooler, but even he can be pretty trying for me. I don't really care for Kenny Rogers, but I guess I have a bit of a soft spot for this song.

Yeah, I wish I had good judgement in that regard. :)
Usually, I just count on random.org to make sure I have the right amount of songs because it will tell you how many items are in your list, but three songs split (which means the link and the text gets shuffled separately) so the number was off anyway and I didn't think to do the math. :dizzy:

I won't be surprised at all. Horse With No Name is a hit song. Roger Miller's may have good lyrics, a nice melody and an understated appeal, but it lacks hit quality. As such, people are naturally going to gravitate to the former. Music is first an aural medium; melody and performance matters.

Horse with No Name enjoyed--and still enjoys--more popularity. It was a #1 hit and still gets plenty of airtime on both Classic and Soft rock radio. Little Green Apples may be a nice song, had its own kind of popularity, and I'm sure many hold it dear, but it's simply not in the same class as Horse musically or melodically.
My point about music being an aural medium is that regardless of how great a lyric may be it's not going to matter if the song doesn't first appeal to the ear. So while you understandably want voters here to consider the lyrics when judging a song, they're not going to matter much if the listener doesn't first like what he's hearing.

Folk isn't just protest songs nor need to have a "message," though most folk does because that's its purpose in some respects; it's kind of a white man's blues. Yes, some singers/songwriters have recorded both.

Yeah, of course. But I'm trying to give people a general idea. Something that they can relate it too. Everyone knows a folk song and that's just a general idea of why it's a folk song. And like I said a lot of them just tell stories.
Traditionally folk songs weren't recorded but songs passed down from generation to generation. It's come to mean something else and just like any genre of music it encompasses a lot more now and it's blended and merged with other types of music where sometimes it's hard to know where one begins and the other ends, but if you have a general idea like what I tried to give it might help those not so familiar.
We need a Folk committee to decide what nominees are eligible. I would love to be on it but I've got to practice my dulcimer.

I don't want a country Music Tournament anymore. This is too hard. Almost every match has me voting out a song that I love. :bawling:
Let's go back to other music that I don't like as much. It's much easier to vote those songs out.

"Shady Grove" is in a tough match-up. I would have voted for it over all but four of those songs.

1. Ricky Van Shelton - Life Turned Her That Way vs George Strait - You Look So Good In Love
2. Little Big Town and Lindsey Buckingham - Bring It On Home (CMT Crossroads) (Skip to 14:16) vs Bad Things - Jace Everett
Liked that live performance
3. Merle Haggard – Wine Take Me Away vs Kris Kristofferson - Casey's Last Ride
4. Brad Paisley - Who Needs Pictures vs Charlie Feathers-Don't You Know
This was hard, I'd normally veer towards something like Charlie Feathers but there's something about the Brad Paisley song
5. Driving My Life Away-Eddie Rabbit vs
The Gambler-Kenny Rogers
Love the Gambler, but Eddie Rabbit is great too. difficult choice
6. Mark Chesnutt - Broken Promise Land vs Hank Williams – Hey Good Lookin’
7. Hank Williams Jr.-All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down vs Bekka and Billy - Through the Walls
Great guitar work!
8. Johnny Cash - Ring Of Fire vs Mudcrutch - Shady Grove
Johnny Cash is so damn good but I doubt if he needs my help, and Ring of Fire isn't one of my favourites. Mudcrutch now, I think I've found another group to look into!

1. Ricky Van Shelton - Life Turned Her That Way
This one is almost impossible for me. These are both my songs, and I love them both. As much as I hate voting against George Strait, I love Ricky Van Shelton's voice more, and this is one of his best songs.
2. Little Big Town and Lindsey Buckingham - Bring It On Home (CMT Crossroads) (Skip to 14:16)
I'm not a fan of Lindsey Buckingham, but "Bring It On Home" is a great song, and I love Phillip Sweet's (from Little Big Town) voice.
3. Merle Haggard - Wine Take Me Away
I love this Merle Haggard song.
4. Brad Paisley - Who Needs Pictures
That's my favorite Brad Paisley song, and "Don't You Know" is a great song, but I don't care for Charlie Feathers voice.
5. Kenny Rogers - The Gambler
I love both songs, but I love Kenny Rogers just a little bit more.
6. Mark Chesnutt - Broken Promise Land
My favorite Mark Chesnutt song against Hank Sr. :(
I think Mark Chesnutt's going to need my vote more. (It will probably be the only one he gets.)
7. Bekka and Billy - Through the Walls
I like Hank Jr., but that Bekka and Billy song is more my type of country music.
8. Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire
Mudcrutch is pretty good, but not good enough to beat Johnny Cash. Sorry.

I thought The Gambler had the best chance of all my noms to win this thing, but I just like the Rabbit song more
6. Mark Chesnutt - Broken Promise Land vs Hank Williams – Hey Good Lookin’
7. Hank Williams Jr.-All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down vs Bekka and Billy - Through the Walls
