View Full Version : Country Music Song Tournament
Godoggo

I'm not sure how many songs this will be. It depends on how many join, but I'm going to make it so that no one has much more than eight nominations a piece.
Rules
1. Country music has a lot of sub-genres with in it. You can nominate from the sub-genres but just make sure the country influences can be heard loud and clear. Take Rockabilly for example; Johnny Cash, yes. Elvis Presley or The Cramps, no.
2. Your nominations need to be in link form. If you don't know how to do it, ask someone, please. :)
3. Try to be careful about nominating something someone already has nominated. To make it easier to do that everyone please keep your nominations in one post.
4. I'll leave this open until Sunday around 6pm eastern time. At that time, I will tell you how many nominations you can have. Please don't sign up unless you plan on participating. It makes us wait for you and puts the game on hold and messes up the nomination process.
5. Rounds will begin Monday night.

My list will be mostly (if not all) heartbreak songs. I love heartbreak songs.
I've changed my list about a dozen times already, but at least I have a lot of backups if any of my songs are picked by someone else. (Which I seriously doubt will happen anyway.)

Me too. I have a lot of classics, but I want to get some alternative country in like James Elliot Whitmore. I'm not even sure where it falls in the country spectrum but I want to include some Jace Everett style country as well as some bluegrass.
Miss Vicky

This is alternative country The ole' Devil (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tGMuSyjjcRY)
It's obviously got a very blues influence but the instruments used sound country. Use this as your barometer I guess.
Just use your best judgement on songs. Ask yourself if it sounds country and if any type country instruments are used (bango, harmonica, etc.) those instruments don't have to used to make a country song and just because they are used in a song it doesn't make it country, but it might help you in your determination.
As far as Lynyrd Skynyrd go they are typically called "southern fried rock" I'd consider them more rock as I would consider Neil Young more "southern fried folk" but they both have been heavily heavily influenced by country so I'll allow them.
They both really walk the line and I would prefer if every single one of your nominations didn't walk the line. Try to throw some "for sure" country in there as well.
You can also look your song up and see what it is listed as. I'm going to let everyone use there best judgment but I will also hold the power of veto. If you try to nominate something like AC/DC or Beyoncé and pass it off as country, it ain't happening. :p
Godoggo
09-07-14, 04:31 AM
The Eagles are usually considered borderline country. Some country radio stations play them, and some don't.
Yeah, see that is why I am leaving it up to everyone and just holding a power if veto for stuff that obviously isn't country. I would consider Eagles further away from country where as a band I considered closer to country someone else might think was less country than The Eagles. I think it's just what you are listening for.

Oh and I'll have to apologise in advance as all my noms will prob be old school . We're not surrounded by country music stations here in the UK , and most people would turn their noses up at it anyway (Honeykid ... Leave it!) . My stuff is mostly from my childhood as country music was beloved by most of my parents generation growing up in Liverpool. A lot of music influences were brought there by visiting sailors from boats on Liverpool's huge docks.

Will this be one of those where you have to put up youtube links?
Yes.
If you're not using an apple product, you'll need to follow these instructions.
1. find the link you want
2. Type out the name of the artist and song in your reply, formatted like so:
Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart
3. Highlight what you've just typed, then click the link icon in the reply window.
4. Paste the YouTube video's url into the window that pops up.
5. Replace the "www" of the url with "m" and click okay.
If you've done it wrong, the video will embed itself in your post.
If you've done it correctly, you will end up with this: Billy Ray Cyrus - Achy Breaky Heart (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=byQIPdHMpjc)
Except of course posting that particular link is wrong, because that song sucks.

Also keep an eye on what others are nominating so you don't post any duplicates.

I hope there's not going to be a lot of "borderline" nominations...I saw a Primus video post and wanted to smash my face into the keyboard. Maybe I'm just being a curmudgeon because real country music is near and dear to my heart.

Eminem has a bit of a countryish twang in his voice. I'd have to consider him eligible.
I think I'll back out of this. I don't want to nominate anything that's too borderline, these should be real country songs and I'm just not knowledgeable about the genre enough to nominate.

I'm assuming one of those you haven't heard of is Bekka and Billy. I'm hoping they do well but these tourneys never seem to favor the more obscure artists. I'm a big fan of them, both as a duo and separately. I was going to nominate one of Billy Burnette's solo songs too, but ultimately cut it because there weren't enough slots and he's already represented as part of Bekka and Billy and as a songwriter and backing vocalist on "River of Love." I'm sorry, Jiraffe. I didn't see your question about Woody Guthrie until now. While Folk definitely comes from country influence I see it as it's own thing and I think Guthrie is firmly planted there. Someone like Emmylou Harris is more of a cross over artist between folk and country in my opinion. Folk would be a great tournament to have though. I love folk music and am much more well versed in it than I am country.
That may be next if I have time before I leave. (Which I should have)

1. Waylon Jennings-Don't Think Twice, It's Alright vs Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark
I like the accompanying music, but Jennings' performance bored me a bit. I like his vocals more than Roy Clark's though.
2. George Strait - River Of Love vs The I-95 Azzhole Song-August Campbell
As a Texan, it's pretty much an obligation to love George Strait. I view him as more of a guilty pleasure, but only for his stuff from the 80s. Don't like the song about ******** though, so King George gets my vote.
3. Bryan White - I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore vs Harper Valley PTA-Jeannie C. Riley
I didn't recognize Bryan White by name, but I think I've heard this song before. Maybe. It's an example of the type of country music I don't like. Harper Valley PTA, on the other hand, is great.
4. George Strait-All My Ex's Live In Texas vs If You Could Read My Mind-Gordon Lightfoot
This George Strait song is more down my alley. I don't care for the Gordon Lightfoot song.
5. Wade Hayes - I'm Still Dancing with You vs Merle Haggard - Mama Tried
The 90s weren't a great time for country. The 60s were outstanding for country. Merle Haggard is a badass.
6. Rawhide-The Blues Brothers vs
Emmylou Harris - Bluebird Wine
Rawhide is fun at first, but it overstays it's welcome. It's a popular novelty song, so I guess I can probably kiss my Emmylou Harris goodbye.
7. Drink the Water - Justin Cross vs Diggin' My Grave- William Elliot Whitmore
"My road to Hell is surely paved with all the love I never gave" love that line. Diggin' My Grave gets my vote.
8. Patsy Cline - She's Got You vs
Dwight Yoakam - Thinking About Leaving
Patsy kills it. Like usual. I know Loretta Lynn is bae, but Patsy Cline is also bae. I prefer Dwight Yoakam's honky-tonk stuff to this. His voice is still cool though. He just isn't bae.

That was kind of an eeny-meeny-miney-mo type deal. Lightfoot's song was pretty bland while Strait's was kind of annoying. I went with bland.

Wow, this country music tournament is a lot tougher than I thought it would be. Almost every match-up was two really great songs. It's really tough voting out some of my favorite songs.
1. Roy Clark - Yesterday When I Was Young
I love Waylon Jennings, but "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" isn't one of my favorites of his songs, and Roy Clark's "Yesterday When I Was Young" is one of my favorite songs.
2. George Strait - River Of Love
This isn't one of my favorite George Strait songs, but it's still the great King George, and I don't think he's ever sung a bad song.
Did Denis Leary sing "The Azzhole Song" in one of his comedy shows? It sounded familiar.
3. Bryan White - I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore
"Harper Valley PTA" is a great song, but Bryan White is one of my favorite singers. I don't think he gets enough recognition.
4. George Strait - All My Ex's Live In Texas
I love Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind", and it sucks that it was up against one of my favorite George Strait songs.
5. Wade Hayes - I'm Still Dancing with You
"I'm Still Dancing with You" is one of my all-time favorite songs, but Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried" is so good that I almost voted against my own nom.
6. Emmylou Harris - Bluebird Wine
Emmylou Harris has such a beautiful voice. I like the song "Rawhide", but The Blues Brothers can't hold a candle to the original version by Frankie Laine. Sorry to whoever nominated it.
7. William Elliot Whitmore - Diggin' My Grave
This was two songs that I've never heard before. Neither song is really my type of country music, but Justin Cross reminded me of Phillip Phillips from "American Idol". They have similar voices.
8. Patsy Cline - She's Got You
"She's Got You" is one of my favorite Patsy Cline songs. Thanks to whoever nominated it.
I like Dwight Yoakam, and that's definitely my type of country music, but he's better when he sings rockabilly.
On a side note, has anyone else noticed that Dwight Yoakam is on "Under the Dome"?

This is the original version of "Rawhide" by Frankie Laine for anyone who hasn't heard it. Doesn't he have an amazing voice?.

Has anyone else heard the Ricky Van Shelton version of the Patsy Cline song "She's Got You" from the 80s? (It's called "He's Got You".)

This is Phillip Phillips from "American Idol" for anyone who hasn't heard him. (He won the year he was on the show.):

Don't feel bad about your knock on The Blues Brothers version because I voted for it, and I don't know a lot of country. I listened to the original and liked that a lot too. I went with Jake and Elwood because they're very nostalgic for me, but I have no expectations for that song.
The Denis Leary song is completely different-I'm an Azzhole-not country at all.

1. Waylon Jennings-Don't Think Twice, It's Alright vs Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark
I listened to Jennings first and was sure I'd vote for that, but I loved the Roy Clark song, although it didn't sound very country to me.
2. George Strait - River Of Love vs The I-95 Azzhole Song-August Campbell
I liked the George Strait song, but I'm just the kind of guy who would love the other one
3. Bryan White - I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore vs Harper Valley PTA-Jeannie C. Riley
Unfortunately, I didn't like the Bryan White song at all.
4. George Strait-All My Ex's Live In Texas vs If You Could Read My Mind-Gordon Lightfoot
Another George Strait song that I liked, but I love the other one
5. Wade Hayes - I'm Still Dancing with You vs Merle Haggard - Mama Tried
It's seeming that I have a preference for older country
6. Rawhide-The Blues Brothers vs*
Emmylou Harris - Bluebird Wine
I quite liked the Emmylou song, but anything from The Blues Brothers is gold for me
7. Drink the Water - Justin Cross vs Diggin' My Grave- William Elliot Whitmore
Wasn't crazy about either, but Whitmore gets the clear edge from me
8. Patsy Cline - She's Got You vs*
Dwight Yoakam - Thinking About Leaving
Liked the Yoakam song but Cline is too much

Ugh. Stupid Patsy Cline.
I generally hate country music, but whenever "Thinking About Leaving" comes up on the iPod, I crank up the volume and will often repeat it a couple of times before letting the next song play. I do that with my other nom in this set, "River of Love" too.

1. Waylon Jennings-Don't Think Twice, It's Alright v Yesterday When I Was Young - Roy Clark
wasn't in love with the Roy Young track. I like the old smoothie Charles Aznavour singing that song more, but went with that one.
Probably cos Dylan is my all time favourite, and Don't Think Twice is such a bitter shun to an ex, that Waylon Jennings singing it through as a straight song was never going to sound right to me - sorry RP!
2. George Strait - River Of Love vs The I-95 Azzhole Song-August Campbell
not keen on the ******* song
3. Bryan White - I'm Not Supposed to Love You Anymore vs Harper Valley PTA-Jeannie C. Riley
Bryan White has a nice voice, but Harper Valley PTA is class
4. George Strait-All My Ex's Live In Texas vs If You Could Read My Mind-Gordon Lightfoot
I like the Gordon Lighfoot song but it's not very country, whereas George Strait's song is much more earthy - that's the first time I've heard him I think anyway.
5. Wade Hayes - I'm Still Dancing with You vs Merle Haggard - Mama Tried
The Hag's song is so good, but I really liked the Wade Hayes song and his voice, so I'll be checking him out
6. Rawhide-The Blues Brothers vs Emmylou Harris - Bluebird Wine
I like the song Rawhide, but agree with GBG that Frankie Laine nailed it.
7. Drink the Water - Justin Cross vs Diggin' My Grave- William Elliot Whitmore
This was the hardest choice, and I'd never heard of either of them, but loved them both. The deep tone of Whitmore's voice gets you in the guts, a bit like Cash does. Loved Justin Cross's voice too - a little touch of Tom Waits like gravel. Will def look for more of both these
8. Patsy Cline - She's Got You vs Dwight Yoakam - Thinking About Leaving
Had to go with Patsy, her voice is so pure.

Thanks for the info on Denis Leary. I watched a few of his comedy specials a while back, and I vaguely remembered him singing something about being an A-hole, but I didn't really care for it much, so that's about all I remembered about it. (And I didn't want to re-watch it to find out.)
I like Denis Leary's movies, but apparently I'm not much of a fan of his type of stand-up comedy.

1. Mark Collie - Even the Man in the Moon is Crying
I like Flatt and Scruggs music, but their voices don't do much for me.
2. Dwight Yoakam - Honky Tonk Man
This was a tough one because I love both songs. I chose Dwight Yoakam because that's one of my favorites of his songs, and I just figured that he might need a little "push" to get past Roger Miller.
3. Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine
I don't like The Rolling Stones when they sing rock 'n roll, and I like them even less when they butcher country music. Sorry.
Even though I wouldn't consider the Bill Withers song country, (it's really more Blues), it's still better than The Rolling Stones song.
4. Kenny Rogers - Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town
I like Loretta Lynn, but I love Kenny Rogers more, and "Ruby" is one of his best songs.
5. Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty
Conway Twitty vs. Merle Haggard??? That's just not fair.
6. Clay Davidson - I Can't Lie To Me
I like both songs, but I prefer Clay Davidson's voice.
7. Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues
This one was no contest. One of Johnny Cash's best songs.
8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again
I'm not a big Willie Nelson fan, but that's one of his better songs.

That's mine. It's a great song, I didn't think i'd lose it first round. I am horrible at predicting what will do well at these things. I didn't pick it hoping to win; I really do love the song, but I did think it would do well.

I voted for it. I love Conway Twitty, and that's one of my favorites of his songs. It was a tough vote though because I had to vote against Merle Haggard.

Match 6: Motherf***er!
That sucks. I hate having two of my songs together. I know it guarantees you have one in the next round, but I don't care.
I want to get an idea of who would participate in a Folk song tournament. If I did one it would have to start when this tournament is on the third round so that I have time to complete it.
I either need only eight people and do a 64 song tournament (I don't want to ever give anyone less than 8 noms. That sucks.) Or I need at least 12 people and do a 128 song tourney.

I don't know as much folk music as I do country music, but I'm sure that I could come up with at least 8-12 songs. I'm in.

I plan to pimp some Kingston Trio and songs from the A Mighty Wind Soundtrack.

I'll do a folk tournament. The next few weeks are gonna be nutters for me though, might not even have internet for two of them.
Anyway, I shall be voting here in a second.

Hey, Swan. You should watch the video of that song I posted in the last round. The Drink the Water song. I don't know if you'll like the song, but the video is awesome. Check it out.
So that's four so far for a folk tournament. I'm hoping to get 12 so it's a bigger one
Hey, I've seen that before! Awesome video. And why wouldn't I like the song? The song is fantastic.

8. Willie Nelson - On The Road Again vs The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down-The Band I'm a huge Willie Nelson fan. I have a lot of his stuff that's not heard a lot and I couldn't even find on youtube to nominate it, but I just don't like that song.

I never expected Clay Davidson to win in a landslide over Montgomery Gentry. Dude released one album in his entire career. Hmm.

I didn't know if you would or wouldn't but I was just saying that even if you don't like the song it's an awesome video. I'm glad this is the first time he's been nominated because I'm nominating that song again for the big banned tournament.

I happen to love that song, but regardless Montgomery Gentry are far more commercially successful than Clay Davidson. Typically the more well known an artist is the better they fare in tournaments.
