John Carpenters Vampires (1998)

Such an underrated vampire film, certainly one of the best of the 90's. It's a mix of vampire horror and action. James Woods plays a bad ass vampire hunter, who lead his team across the countryside clearing out nests and burning the filthy bloodsuckers. Lots of blood, guts ,priests and one-liners.

Dark thriller about a hilarious killer, Mick Taylor, an outback tracker and general nutcase, who hunts down tourists, chops them up, and steals their possessions. One of the best horrors of the noughties, and one of the funniest killers of all-time. :D

I'm prepared to think that I might've had too high expectations, given its reputation on the horror film festival circuit when it was released, but I was unimpressed.

Horror sucks now. The golden age is over. It may come back again some day, but I don't care for what they do now. Everyone is just trying to convince themselves that all the crappy remakes were actually pretty good films. They need to wake up.

The best thing we really had in the past 10 years was the Saw series and people who like all of these stupid non-films like Wolf Creek like to diss Saw. I can sort of understand people who actually don't like it, but I feel like that was the best we had.

Ravenous (1999)

http://37.media.tumblr.com/8bbff151b9a43ed389547ddb73c83e58/tumblr_mw69kirChG1qiekfeo1_250.gif

A chilling tale of desperation, insantiy, and cannibalism. Based on the Donner Party incident, Ravenous is truly a stomach-churning gorefest.

30 Days of Night (2007)

http://31.media.tumblr.com/8d75571c54c52ee1c1aaafed78b132b8/tumblr_mfl30knaMA1rexcp7o1_500.gif

I just always liked to atmosphere of this film, the dark mood and isolation. The vampires are more like the vampires I'd prefer to see in a film: sharp-vanged beasts, and not the velvet wearing, glow in the dark, emos of Twilight. 30 Days of Night is also one of only two films that I can stand watching Josh Hartnett act in, the other being The Faculty.

Jack1

Not seen either of those. Both - particularly the first - look reasonably interesting.

honeykid
07-29-14, 08:34 AM
For some reason Ravenous has never appealed. Even the Neighbours alumni wasn't enough. I honestly don't know why but it doesn't.

I got 30 Days of Night because of Melissa George, as I did Triangle and a few others, but I've only seen it once and it wasn't particularly successful. This is mainly because I didn't like the vampires. However, as I've said before on the site, once I started to think of it as a zombie film rather than a vampire film, I enjoyed it more and felt it worked better. Of course, it could just be that after an hour or so the film starts to get good. Given the premise I expected to like it a hell of a lot more than I did.

the samoan lawyer
07-29-14, 08:41 AM
Im glad you have Ravenous on here as ive owned it on DVD for ages but never really appealed to me, i'll give it a go soon. I agree with HK on 30 Days, im not the biggest fan of vampire film so despite quite enjoying the movie itself, Ive never really gave it a second thought.

The Crazies (2010)

https://www.movieposter.com/posters/archive/main/105/MPW-52659
http://37.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lutcwvvLic1qj7u8ao1_500.gif

Remake of the 1973 Romero film, which I actually prefer over the original. Simple story: a chemical spills into a small town's water supply turning them all into loons. Good special effects, plenty of action, and, of course, lots of gore.

The second best of the 90's teen horrors after Scream, with probably Josh Hartnett's best perfomance before he started fighting above his weight. The modern teen horrror take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and a lot more covincing than The Invasion .

Guillermo del Toro's first and most underrated feature. Mimic is a quick, fun, modern creature feature, with some pretty good practical special effects.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (remake)(2003)

http://www.moviexclusive.com/review/texaschainsawmassacrethebeginning/poster.jpg
http://media0.giphy.com/media/m59u5DvPgJltK/200.gif

Don't let the fact that Jessica Biel is in this put you off, it was written by Tobe Hooper, which really shows in the story, atmosphere and gory set-pieces. Almost as good as the original in my opinion. What sets the original apart, and gives it more a gritty, authentic feel is the really low budget and cheap grain 8mm camera work, that, and the high-pitch shreeking of the final girl.

A collaboration between Stephen King and George A. Romero, Creepshow is the best of the horror anthologies. Five short tales of terror from the minds of these two horror masters. The film with Leslie Nielsen in called Something to Tide Over is my favorite of the five.

I'd struggle to make a list of 50 horror movies that I genuinely love, so I guess it's no surprise that I find most of the entries to be very hit or miss. A few really solid, underrated flicks have appeared so far, like Stir of Echoes, Orphan and The Faculty, but there's also been several movies, like Splinter and Mama, that I found to be quite dreadful.

Regardless, I'm enjoying your list. There's been a few movies I've never even heard of, so I'm gaining a few recommendations along the way.

Hostel (2005)

The first of the new wave torture-porn horror, and the most well-made and effective. Films like A Serbian Film are just gory for the sake of it, but Hostel was actually entertaining to watch and actually had a plot.

I still have to watch The Blaire Witch Project, but Hostel is a great film. I didn't watch Hostel 2 because I got the impression it was just capitalising on the success of the first movie. What I loved about hostel was the fact that it didn't glamorize the violence. It was the kind of movie that a lot of people found too brutal, even though they enjoy many typical slashers that do glamorize violence.

Godoggo
08-14-14, 01:02 AM
Blair Witch Project is a downright scary movie. It's one that has stuck with me much like Jaws and Psycho.

I'm not that big a fan of Hostel, but I do defend it when people dismiss it as just "torture porn" Like the movie The Loved Ones there is a lot more to it than just the torture porn part of it. The sequels, however, deserve the dismissal. (I love The Loved Ones, by the way. Fantastic movie!)

TheUsualSuspect

Catching this late:

Vampires is highly underrated in my opinion. A great mix of the vampire horror genre and a western. James Woods gives one hell of a performances as a bad ass.

The Crazies is underrated as well. A remake that doesn't suck or insult the original. Well shot and Oly-fantasic is great as usual.

Joyride, you're speaking my language bub. I love this film and is still one of the best white knuckle thrill rides. If you like Spielberg's Duel, you'll dig Joyride.

I wish both Scream and Cabin in the Woods were higher. They perfectly capture and deconstruct the horror genre in such a way that not many films can replicate.

I hope to see films like Dog Soldiers, Session 9, Frailty, and The Descent on here as well as the obvious classics.

Zotis

I'm not that big a fan of Hostel, but I do defend it when people dismiss it as just "torture porn"

Those people are usually fans of movies like Saw, and not just the first one (which was actually a respectable movie) but all the appalling sequels. See, it's because they go into a movie like that expecting to enjoy the violence, but when the violence disturbs them (as violence should) they can't understand why anyone would like it other than for the reasons they like the violent movies they like. That's why they think it's "torture porn."

That's my theory.

Godoggo
08-14-14, 01:44 AM
Yeah, I love horror but I'm not a fan of "torture porn". I'm squeamish and easily upset by violence, but I thought Hostel had a decent story and while highly overblown it still at least was based on something that actually occurred. I just had to hide my eyes pretty often. :p

Zotis
08-14-14, 03:30 AM
Hostel for me felt a lot like Eastern Promises in that it felt very hard and uncompromising. It wasn't story driven, but was much more about the occurrence of the event. I don't know if I'm making much sense, but it actually surprised me a lot when I first watched it and it surpassed my expectations. I think it's a very solid movie, but it lacks a strong enough story or character development to make it a truly great film. For it's genre though, I find it to be very strong. I'm not a squeamish person, and I like it when a movie can actually creep me out or scare me, and Hostel was so harsh. I really love it when a movie makes me feel appalled. When the characters were tortured I felt tortured. I didn't feel like I was being entertained. I felt like my senses were being assaulted and violated. It was cruel, and that's what I loved about it. I didn't get excited by the violence, I was hurt by the violence. That's how it should be. Hostel is a very unique movie. It's not typical at all. The philosophy of the killers is so well communicated and captured. Everything is explained. From the superficial rich prick who's nervous about torturing someone but enjoys it, to the businessman who wished he was a doctor and passionately loved torture and murder, it was so well communicated.

Captain Spaulding
08-14-14, 07:47 AM
I'm a fan of Hostel and The Blair Witch Project.

I dislike most found-footage movies, finding it a tiresome, distracting gimmick that often detracts from the movie itself, but Blair Witch is an exception. Extraordinarily creepy, especially if you've ever been lost in the woods, and impressive filmmaking when you consider the shoestring budget. I think what makes it so effective is its ambiguity: you can watch from the perspective that the witch is real and the woods are haunted, or that it's just a group of twisted locals tormenting the group.

One of the best American remakes of foreign horror ever. I just love the style of this film - from the dark blue washed camera, to the shock scares and eery soundtrack. The kid who plays Naomi Watt's son was perfectly cast and always give me the creeps; he would have been perfect as Damien in the Omen remake.

I gotta say I completely disagree with you Slob on The Ring. Well, I haven't watched Ringu, but The Ring was so bad... it was like the epitome of mediocrity in the Horror genre. Typical Hollywood crap if you ask me. Mediocre acting, lousy plot, and a total face palm on a potentially interesting theme. It was almost as bad as The Grudge. Much like The Ruins, Triangle is one of the most original horrors of the last ten years. A twisted mind-bender of a film that sees Melissa George stuck in a time warp with a masked killer chased her around a cruise ship. More than a few big plot twists in this one.

I've talked a lot about The Triangle on this forum. Sometimes twists can be cheap and something lazy tacked on at the end as a desperate move to make an otherwise mediocre story have more value. The Triangle is not one of those movies. It's an integral part of the story as it should be. It's a clever film that stays interesting with repeat viewings. There is a thread about it (don't go in there until you've seen it) where questions were asked and threads were pulled and it still holds up.

I couldn't sleep for a long time after The Ring. I hadn't distrusted my television like that since Poltergeist. There is nothing more I love than a good ghost story. You really don't need much other than a creepy place and a reason for vengeance. The Ring keeps the story simple and the visuals super creepy. I've seen it several times now and I still can't watch it without my blanket.

I feel like I'm starting to agree with Slob less and less...

The Ruins was a typical average horror flick without a whole lot of depth to it. Well it's better than The Ring at least.

Laura Ramsey (the blonde) was interesting in Cruel World though.

Well, there's nothing wrong with you placing it there on your top list. You can place it at #1 if you like. I just don't agree that it's one of the best horror movies of the last 10 years. But I think I was a bit impulsive in saying it was a typical average horror flick. I actually did enjoy it, and the acting was good. The story and plot weren't bad, a bit simple, but still fine. Na, it's a decent movie. But yeah, I don't think it's one of the best of the last 10 years.

What Tyler said is contradictory. If scientists were all truly nihilists then they would not endeavour to comprehend anything.

Tyler1
08-20-14, 12:54 PM
I didn't say that all scientists are nihilists. But essentially the scientific worldview is nihilistic. Carpenter was challenging that particular aspect - the materialistic view of the universe, that there is ultimately no transcendent being, that matter is purely reductionistic, and therefore we cannot account for good and evil in this world. Even the most talented minds put together were unable to explain the spiritual phenomenon or entity that defies all known scientific laws.

Tyler1
08-20-14, 01:05 PM
That's what makes the movie so relevant today. The ongoing war between science and theology. And the battleground is fought in the area of quantum physics and materialism (which the film makes explicit references to). I must emphasize that this is Carpenter's view, though there are different ways to approach the 'free will' problem.

YES.

Yes.

Finally I agree with you on something.

Prince of Darkness was one of those movies that bothered me/scared the Hell out of me as a kid and continued to bother me (at least in my memory) years later. I still regard it as very creepy and it's mostly because of THE INSECT MAN. That was always the scariest part for me. As a kid, it was probably the darkest, most evil thing ever, for some strange, probably evolutionary psychology related reason. Insect man was YOU-DON'T-GO-THERE scary. I avoided watching this movie because of that.

The bloody faced blonde woman was scary, too, as well as when that canister sprays stuff in that woman's mouth. Prince of Darkness was the scariest horror movie to me back in the day. THE ABSOLUTE scariest, because I avoided it and the thought of it frightened me. I need to get that movie on blu-ray. I could handle it now, but when I was younger, it was one of those movies that I just couldn't ... process. And I had seen Hellbound: Hellraiser II and other disgusting stuff. That stuff was fine for some reason compared to Prince of Darkness. Now I know why you're disturbed, Slob.

This is the Insect Man scene:

The ending is weak, but I loved the movie's aesthetic (if I had stumbled across it on T.V. late one night without knowing anything about it, I would've assumed the movie was from 30+ years ago).
