Ran is as beautiful as films can get. Also note that it was the most expensive Japanese film of the 1980's. Interestingly that such a serious film (in artistic terms) could be given such a large budget. Hollywood gives the big budgets to the crappy projects (let's do a Transformer's sequel, let's give it a 300 million dollars production budget).

But that's because Hollywood think about selling worldwide to non-English speaking countries. Therefore, you don't want something like dialogue making things complicated. This means you spend on spectacle. It's also why gross-out/slapstick comedies do well.

Well, a movie like Gravity had a 100 million dollar budget and is a serious artistic effort in my book. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is also a very faithful adaptation of the novel (film critic Noel Vera said that the problem of the Lord of the Rings movies just was that they followed Tolkien and his bad writing too closely).

I've seen all of these films, except Ran and I LOVE most of them. GoldenEye and Rebel Without a Cause are probably the ones I like less of your list, but I still think they're good films.

GoldenEye is definitely one of the better Bond films. However, it has nothing on classics like Goldfinger, Dr. No or The Spy Who Loves Me.

Rebel Without a Cause is sometimes a little bit sentimental and takes a few strange turns, in my opinion, but it's still an eventful film that is great to watch.

As I said, I love all your other picks. I also really like your layout. Great job!

How come? Daniel Plainview alone is better than all films on this list thus far.

I was completely apathetic to Plainview and to the story itself. I didn't find him to be interesting, likable or detestable enough for me to care what became of him and I certainly didn't care what became of the preacher boy played by Dano, though his demise was pretty unique.

I've felt the same way about Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love. Only the performances in The Master redeemed it, but I still don't like the movie itself.

Yeah, I agree, There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece, it's also in my top 30-40 favorites. It was in my top 5-6 once but it dropped as I watched more masterpieces, since I watched There Will Be Blood in the cinema in 2007 when I was 18. So it was one of my first contacts with an adult film masterpiece.

Blade Runner, while being weaker in terms of human drama, is a masterpiece of visuals and of science fiction themes. It's possibly the best American movie made in the 1980's.

I just watched Dr. Strangelove last night and was quite bored by it overall, but I thought the character names were quite amusing.

What about the insightful and razor sharp satire on (Cold) War politics? The film is much more than just a comedy, in my opinion.

I understood the satire and I'm not saying it wasn't well done, but since I've pretty much zero interest in war politics it didn't amuse me.

+rep for Goodfellas.

I haven't yet seen Chinatown or The Shining, though both are on my watchlist. I didn't like A Clockwork Orange and didn't care for Taxi Driver.

Enjoyed reading your list. Great that you had Double Indemnity up there in your top 10 :)

That is one of the best top 5 endings I've seen on a list so far on this forum. Each one of them is an absolute favorite of mine.

Any chance you could post a list of the 35 films? I think I love all of them that I have seen to some degree, and the rep I have given you reflects that, but would be interesting to see just what ratings I give them :)

I've seen 17 of the 35. Most of what I've seen is great, except Strangelove, Falcon, and Singin. I respect them all though except the overrated Strangelove.
