Okay folks it’s time for yet another MoFo Song Tournament!

Since it’s almost December and all, I’ve decided that I’m going to make this one Christmas themed. (That’s right, an atheist is running a Christmas song tournament!) This will be a 64 song tournament because, quite frankly, I don’t want to listen to 128 Christmas songs.

I’ll start off with sign ups and then divide the 64 slots as evenly as possible among the participants. Those who sign up may nominate any Christmas (or winter/other December holiday) themed song from any artist in any genre, including instrumental and novelty songs, as long as they can provide a link to a working YouTube video for each nomination.

Multiple nominations of the same song will be accepted if each nomination is by a different artist. For example, if someone has already nominated Eartha Kitt’s “Santa Baby” (and I hope they don’t) and you want to nominate Madonna’s “Santa Baby” (and I hope you don’t), both nominations will be accepted. All matchups will be determined at random from the remaining pool of nominees.

Just like in previous tournaments, I will require that all nominating participants vote in every match of a set. There will be one minor change to the voting process, however. For the sake of keeping things moving, tied matches will be broken by random drawing. That is, I’ll put the names of participating voters into a randomizer and select one name. Whichever nomination that person voted for will be the winner.

Sign-ups are now open and will close at approx. 7:00 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, December 2nd. Each participant will be assigned their number of nominations at that time.

As a side note, if you don't trust me to run this tournament honestly, then don't participate. Anybody who makes accusations of cheating will not have their votes counted. Also, as usual I will not accept votes or nominations from any user that I know or suspect to be the alias of another MoFo.

If that is the case I will have to opt out. I am going into the field tomorrow for ten days. And it would be a pain to try and participate with just an I-phone which will probably be dead in a day or so.

Each person will get 8 nominations. Nominations will be open until approx. 7:30 p.m. Pacific Time tomorrow. If anyone on the list fails to post their nominations by that time, I will extend nominations by 24 hours. If they still fail, they will forfeit and their slots will be divided among the other participants.

Please format your links as shown in this example:

Alvin and the Chipmunks - The Christmas Song (Don't Be Late) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiNmVdFlIL4)

Type out each nomination as: Artist Name, space, hyphen, space, song title. Then hi-light the title, click the "Insert Link" button and paste the url into the window that appears. Please do not number your nominations.

As in previous tournaments, I will only use videos that I can view. If I catch a link that is not viewable in the U.S. before noms close, I will ask you to change the link. Otherwise I will do my best to find the correct song to replace your link with.

Happy nominating!

I'm a bit surprised you haven't heard Judy Garland's version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, if only because Meet Me In St. Louis is such a classsic. I wasn't sure about whether the Chris Rea track would be well known Stateside, but all the other you've not heard, I think, are very UK-centric, which is why I nominated them and made that comment about pissing the other Brits off. :D

Yeah, it is quite lengthy. This is coming from the guy who nominated In a Gadda Da Vida, so you know it's seriously long.

In a Gadda Da Vida is a lot more tolerable than almost 2 hours. I would be very disappointed if "Nutcracker" won. It's not what I had in mind for this tournament. If he had used a much, much shorter piece from it -- that would have been fine. But not this almost 2 hour long thing!

I mean, I dig the fact that you nominated such an INTENSE, NEVERENDING, monumental, beloved instrumental Christmas piece... but damn. For me, as I was going through my nominations, I actually thought about the song length. Over four minutes for a Christmas song just seems like too long for me. There's something about Christmas songs that fits well with them being at a 2-3 minute limit.

I think you have to vote for every matchup, it might be one of the rules. I feel you though, some sets are "undesirable".

No. Only people who nominated songs have to vote in every match of a set. I set that rule because I feel it's unfair for anyone to expect other people to listen to and vote for their nominations if they're not going to do the same for others.

If you didn't nominate any songs, you can skip matches you don't care for.

Gee, I wonder why "Wonderful Christmas Time" was the very last song to be put up for nominations.

Because it was the last slip to get drawn, well second to last actually. Fountains of Wayne was the last one. I'm just sad it's going up against Fountains of Wayne and will probably win. I was hoping it'd go up against "White Christmas" or even "Santa Baby" - since that would have eliminated one of them.

1. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas
2. Mud - Lonely This Christmas (I'm really liking this song. I wasn't familiar with it before.)
3. Bob Seger - The Little Drummer Boy (It pains me to vote against Tom Petty, but I do think this is the superior song)
4. Bing Crosby - White Christmas (Die "Santa Baby," Die!)
5. The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride (The downside to having all of my noms make it past round 1 is that this happens - two different matches pitting my nominations against each other.)
6. Ray Charles - That Spirit of Christmas
7. John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
8. Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker (I'll take an overly long instrumental over that other p.o.s. any day!)

Yeah, well, you voted against my top two favorite Christmas songs and for my top two least favorites, so too bad. And, of course, you nominated my most hated Christmas song ever. Maybe even my most hated song of any kind.

I can't believe you didn't play this time, Mmmm Donuts. You and Gunslinger, winners of the past two tournaments. Maybe that makes you feel guilty.

We don't need The Pogues in the U.S.
Believe me, we don't need them here, either. Sadly, that's not stopped them. :( However, with the amount of 'Irish' people over there, I'm a little surprised it appears to be so little known. Maybe it's the words "******" and "arsehole"? Count yourselves lucky.

Match 1:
Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You
Jose Feliciano - Feliz Navidad

Because it is THE modern Christmas song!

Match 2:
Jim Nabors - Do You Hear What I Hear?
Mud - Lonely This Christmas

Good song.

Match 3:
Bob Seger - The Little Drummer Boy
Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again

None of these two is a favorite, but if I have to choose, it's Petty.

Match 4:
Bing Crosby – White Christmas
Eartha Kitt - Santa Baby

Well, it doesn't get more classic than Bing Crosby's White Christmas.

Match 5:
Mannheim Steamroller - Carol of the Bells
The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

The Ronettes!!!

Match 6:
Ray Charles - That Spirit Of Christmas
Ol' 55 - Little Saint Nick

Little Saint Nick is more my kind of music.

Match 7:
Adam Sandler - The Hanukkah Song
John Lennon - Happy Xmas (War Is Over)

No contest.

Match 8:
Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker
Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time

The Suite (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8J8urC_8Jw) would have been enough for The Nutcracker, but it's a masterpiece nevertheless.

Listen, Bitch -- you don't have to. Nobody's forcing you.

There's a wonderful Jim Nabors option available.

That should be winning. Not something called Mud -- Lonely (oh, boo hoo) This Christmas.

Oh, wait a minute. Mud - "Lonely For Christmas" is that song from Round 1 that I liked and voted for. I forgot what it was called.

Is that one of your noms, Honeykid? Oh, wait, no it's not, you don't like it. Looks like your kind of nomination, though.
