Nice job throwing in a big word for the Hell of it.

Of course the radio plays a big role in the spread of popular music. In case you didn't know, most of the big names in this tournament had at least some radio exposure. Radio used to be pretty good.

That's fine if you prefer music that never makes it onto mainstream radio stations, that's your "prerogative", but the fact is, A lot of the great classics were on radio first.

Yeah, this isn't a radio bashing discussion, you said Pink is a rare case of a good singer these days, so because that implies an insanely limited perspective of just how many musicians are out there that you evidently don't know about, who are equally or more competent than a pop singer, that's patently false. What I listen to isn't really relevant.

I think this is why Cyndi Lauper beating Tina Turner REALLY, REALLY irritates me ---

Black women are just more musical than white women. They are more talented.

I nominated a lot of black women (Pointer Sisters, Janet Jackson, Tina, The Supremes, Sheila E.) but I didn't nominate enough. TLC was considered. So was Beyonce.

I am rooting for a black woman (or women) to win this tournament.

"Time After Time", besides "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"

She's just a dolt who dresses in stupid clothes and stupid hair and talks in a stupid voice and made a few stupid songs which she milks to death. Every time the bitch goes on a talk show, she has to sing "Time After Time" because without it, she's a nobody. She's like a zombie who crawled out of the '80s graveyard and needs putting down. Now she takes up gay causes and tours with Margaret Cho to make herself appear relevant, but the woman hasn't been successful in music since her one day in the '80s. Ever since then she's been on a manic frenzy to act like it's still going on.

I agree. But that Tina song was crap. :D The only other Cyndi Lauper song I can think of that I like is I Drove All Night, and that's not one of her songs anyway.

Let's have a song tournament where the theme is that all 128 songs were nominated by ME.

You don't remember "Toy Soldiers"? It was a number one hit back in 1989. It's a decent song, but I prefer the Donna Summer song.

Sexy Celebrity
11-05-13, 12:36 PM
I vaguely remember it. It didn't leave a lasting impression. I remember the movie, Toy Soldiers, though, with Sean Astin.

A one hit wonder! All of you people just wag your tongues at the sight of a long lost, forgotten, dark haired, pasty faced, anorexic emotional train wreck that nobody else loves. You can't get enough. The more into the sewers they are, the more you carry them out and proclaim you've found the daughters of Jesus.

Miss Vicky
11-05-13, 12:39 PM
It's a song tournament not an artist tournament. This isn't a question of who do people prefer - Donna Summer or Martika - it's a question of what song do they prefer. One hit wonders have just as much place in the tournament as any other.

Just because all your noms are losing doesn't mean there is a conspiracy. On the contrary maybe you should listen to more stuff than what plays in Salvation Army's "women power" radio mix.

Donna Summer may be on their radio mix, but Martika's CD (or cassette tape) is in Salvation Army's $1.00 grab bag.

Who the HELL is Martika and why is her "Toy Soldiers" song even a match for my Donna Summer?
Because some people prefer it, (like me :p) and I like Donna Summer and nominated a song of hers as well.

I vaguely remember it. It didn't leave a lasting impression. I remember the movie, Toy Soldiers, though, with Sean Astin.
I liked that film.

A one hit wonder! All of you people just wag your tongues at the sight of a long lost, forgotten, dark haired, pasty faced, anorexic emotional train wreck that nobody else loves.

Honeykid, I don't think those other Martika songs were really hits over here in the States... I know that was a long time ago and I was a child, but I was a child that watched MTV and VH1 all the time. That "Toy Soldiers" song -- yeah, I kinda remembered it. I didn't think the Selena Gomez song was that bad. I came close to voting for it.

I listened to about ten seconds of that P.O.S. and decided to vote for the other song.

Hey, you're supposed to listen to at least half of it before making a call. Let me help you with this.

Well four of the songs in this set were my nominations, so bite me hk. :p
Ah. Sorry, MV. However, our musical tastes don't seem to overlap too often, do they? That said, I was thinking of nominating both Like A Prayer and This Used To Be My Playground. LaP I didn't go with because it'd been nominated before (and spaces were at a premium with this set) and I forgot about 'Playground' when I came to putting my nominations forward.

Alicia Keys
You voted the wrong way, but + rep for breaking the tie. :)

Round 1, Day 6

1. Jennifer Hudson - One Night Only vs Lady Gaga - Poker Face - That's the first time I've listened to Poker Face from start to finish. I don't care for either but, while I think I might prefer JH's song, I can't help but admire a well crafted pop song.

2. Dolly Parton - 9 to 5 vs The Crystals - Then He Kissed Me - This is a really tough one. Normally it wouldn't have even been a contest but, for some reason, the song 9 To 5 puts a smile on my face.

3. Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl vs Peccatum - The Banks of this River is Night - Tori just ripped up the 90's.

4. Madonna - La Isla Bonita vs The Bangles - In Your Room - In your Room was another song I thought about nominating, so this one's pretty easy for me. Plus, I'm not much of a fan of Spanish/Latino influenced music.

5. Madonna - Live to Tell vs Sam Brown - Stop - This was much tougher. One of my favourite Madonna songs, but Sam Brown's Stop is a song I keep coming back to month after month, year after year.

6. Selena Gomez - Who Says vs Lady Gaga - Bad Romance - I've already said I don't care much for Lady Gaga and I'd just rather listen to the other one.

7. Alannah Myles - Black Velvet vs Poison Girls - Persons Unknown - Again, one of my favourites and one of the first songs I thought of when this tournament was spoken of.

8. Dead Can Dance - Return of the She-King vs Lisa Marie Presley - Lights Out - Both are terrible, so it's the lesser of two evils.

Cher?

I haven't even voted for Cher in this tournament. Not the best Cher songs nominated, in my opinion. I would have nominated "Dark Lady" or "I've Found Someone" (an idea given to me by Dorothy Michaels) or "Believe" or what's that other one... "If I Could Turn Back Time." Or something else. Maybe "Half Breed."

So far you and LP Quagmire are the only people who voted against "Silver Springs" so it'll probably be moving on. You thought all of my songs were elminated? Well that's on you. J.J.'s been posting the full list of winners each time. Did you really think somebody else nominated Fleetwood Mac songs?

And again, you're one to talk. You bitched like crazy over the few songs of yours that didn't make it past Round 1 of Song Tournament 3, even though you had more songs in Round 2 than anybody else.
