Well hello there!

Are you ready to go again? The 90s countdown was a huge success under the loving guidance of Mr. Lime, so it seems a logical progression for our list series to move on to the next great decade in our beloved cinema's history: the 1980s. A time when blockbuster franchises were king and people still kind of liked George Lucas. There are a ton of great movies that came out in the 80s, from every genre and from all around the world (sorry Sexy) so hopefully this will be a great list.

*IMPORTANT*
Before we get going, you should all know that there's a chance this list might work a little differently. For the 90s countdown, we had around 50 voters for 100 entries, which meant that there were a few early appearances of films that came completely out of left field. It's been pointed out to me that due to the uproar that they caused, probably owing to the fact that only a few people vote for them which meant they were relatively unrepresentative of the forum's taste as a whole, it might be a good idea to switch from 100 to 50.

Personally, I'd be more than happy to stick with 100 because I have to admit, I like these esoteric choices and those that were upset were probably a vocal minority. Also because 50 could mean we sacrifice too many films that should make it. But I figured it best to throw it out to you guys. Would you prefer a fully representative list of 50 made up of films that lots of people voted for, or stick with 100 - with a few surprises and lots of movies with 50/50 chances to make it - like the last countdown? Alternatively, you could leave it up to me to decide as I start to get an idea of the kind of shape the list it going to take, how many random early entries there are and if there are simply too many. Let me know in this thread or if you prefer, I can append a poll.

The rules won't change in any case, only the number of films, so on with the show!

The MoFos have spoken, we're sticking with 100.

Pick good films, you will.

RULES
Harry's rules worked well, so I figure if it ain't broken, don't fix it. Here they are again:

Submit your ranked list (1-25, no ties) to me via PM with the title "Your Username - MoFo 80s List".
New members can send in a list as soon as they've been a member here for one month. This measure is taken so that the list isn't influenced by members who've been on here for a week and then pack their bags and never come back.
Films that are part of a series (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc etc etc) must be submitted as separate films.
Any film with the year 1980-89 listed on IMDb is eligible for the list.
Those revealing their lists before the countdown has ended will be disqualified. That just defeats the point of the whole thing.
As per usual, films will be awarded points as follows: 25 points for 1st place, 24 points for 2nd place, 23 for 3rd and so on.
The deadline for entries is 15th January 2014. I was going to go with a solid 4 months, but I tacked on two weeks-ish so the deadline doesn't coincide with Christmas/New Year. Plenty of time to catch up on what you want to see and get your lists in!

EDIT 18/09 - Putting all the film-specific decisions from questions regarding eligibility here so everybody's clear.

Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue is allowed and should be submitted as one entry [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=956665#post956665)
Claude Berri's Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources should be submitted separately [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=963553)
Godard's Histoire(s) du cinéma is not eligible [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=962915#post962915)
Berlin Alexanderplatz is eligible [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=958551)

I think that's everything. Huge thanks to Harry for doing such a great job with the previous countdown, to all of you for your vote of confidence and allowing me to do this, and to Yoda for his advice and kind offer to help out.

Happy listing!

Stick to 100 because if we do 50, there's less scope for shock inclusion. Also, having 100 fosters more discussion and in all, makes the list grander in scale. The graphics are great too Skepsis :)

This will be my first Mofo list, so I'm looking forward to it

Seriously? A picture from a Spike Lee movie in your introduction? That's not '80s. The others weren't that great, either. Only thing I liked was that 9 because it had Emilio Estevez in it. And the Yoda/Luke Skywalker picture.

Well, there's a lot, and I should probably make a full list, but off the top of my head -- there better be horror films. The '80s were all about the slasher films and the really great horror monsters like Freddy, Jason, Michael, Pinhead, etc. There better not be any Asian monsters in this or I'm gonna bring down the house.

I'm going into this one with total disappointment already. The Millenium list was really good, I thought -- I had 15 movies from my list make it. THE HELP, for crying out loud, even made the list. The only one that didn't was Brothers, but it was DAMN CLOSE, and it's all my fault that it made the list, but it has turned me into a superhero to Miss Vicky, so I guess there's that.

So, the '90s list was a rude awakening. It was cholera. It was the Black Plague. It was the end of innocence. Now I've been disillusioned and destroyed. I see only darkness ahead. Illuminated only by the white faces of geisha girls. I am expecting more pain, more tragedy, more corruption, more disfigurement, more abominations and less abdominals.

I only hope that there's hope. That there's a window of light. An end to this tunnel where the train ran over me. It's like the final act of a three part trilogy. The first part was fun and joyous and carefree. The second part was a nightmare -- the worst it could get.

Part three -- the '80s -- well... that will be the resolution.

We shall see how it all turns out.

Definitely 100. The first half of the 90s list was by far the most entertaining, in terms of the thread and for seeing those movies appear that weren't the usual suspects. Trying to guess the relative positions of the top six movies when everyone knew what they would be was the boring part.

Glad we've got a bit of time to get our lists in order, narrowing it down to 25 is always the tricky part.

Skepsis93
09-03-13, 07:05 PM

It's technically a TV series, but I hear the whole thing referred to as a film quite a lot. I would be inclined towards making an exception, but I'm not too familiar with it, so would someone who is mind pitching in to help make a decision here?

it has turned me into a superhero to Miss Vicky, so I guess there's that.

Egotistical much? You helped introduce me to ONE movie from that list. Your vote gave it a significant number of points, without which it wouldn't have made the list. But its placement on the list wasn't the only thing that convinced me to actually watch Hedwig. The real deciding factor came when both mark F and honeykid recommended it.

In any case, glad this one's gonna be another top 100. It'll be awhile before I submit a list though. I need to do some watching and some thinking.

I definitely want it to be 100, Skepsis. That's pretty much the only chance I have of getting any of my choices on the list. :D Also, I'm pretty sure I'll dislike most of the top 25. :p

Earth Girls Are Easy is ok, 80's crap. Of course, I saw it back in the 80's so it was just ok crap back then. :D It was something my sister always liked, along with Who's That Girl? and Modern Girls.

Yeh, I think he said when he sent it to be he tried to exclude the titles people already know / are available on a lot of lists already. But I'm sure he probably left a few of through his own choice that people would disagree with :p

Yes, I tried to leave out all the big award winners and the films that people always remember (Blade Runner, Aliens, Back To The Future, etc) as well as the nostalgic/childhood favs (Neverending Story, Return Of The Jedi, The Princess Bride.) Though I just had to include some, such as Gremlins just on the off chance that someone would miss it.

Of course, there's still a few HK favs in there that I couldn't let go of. Wisdom, Cannonball Run or Class of 1984, but I also threw films in which I don't like, but are worth someone elses time, IMO.

I'm going to say yes on the Dekalog issue. Submit it as one film. It's referenced as such in a fair few places, and I figure it would be a shame for such a big part of the decade to not even have a chance. If I said submit separately, it basically defeats the chances of each individual film.

This is a special case though. The rule stands for other series.

That list has reminded me of a few that I had forgotten, thanks!

Still more I've never seen. Those I have seen and think are worth watching.

The Long Good Friday
Body Heat
Diner
The Draughtsman's Contract
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
The Thing

My Beautiful Laundrette
A Room With A View
Caravaggio

Mona Lisa
Stand By Me

I'm also going to vote for it, unless I suddenly watch around twenty new brilliant '80s films in the upcoming 4 months that are better than this (which is not going to happen).

Solid prediction. I feel like #1 is much more up for grabs than it was for the 90s countdown though. Especially with the surprise winner, despite everyone being sure of the top 2 and most people being certain Pulp Fiction as going to win. I feel like there's 5 or 6 that are in contention here.

Failing that, Raiders Of The Lost Ark or Blade Runner may take the win.

Jaws 3D

Superman 4: The Quest For Peace

The Garbage Pail Kids Movie
Basket Case
Howard The Duck
Meet The Feebles
Killer Klowns From Outer Space
Terrorvision

Meh, The elephant man should win.

Realistically though, I think The Empire strikes back or Blade Runner would be nice first options. Anyway, I will watch a lot more stuff. So far on 4.5 and 5 movies...

1980

The Blues Brothers
The elephant man
The Empire strikes back

1982

Blade Runner
Gauche the Cellist
The beehive
The Plague Dogs
The thing

1983

Videodrome

1984

Amadeus
Balkan spy
Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind
The holy innocents
This is Spinal Tap

1985

After hours
Angel's egg
Back to the future
Come and see
The color purple
The purple rose of Cairo
Vampires in Havana

1986

Barefoot Gen 2
Blue velvet
Castle in the sky
The great mouse detective
The name of the rose
Voyage to nowhere

1987

Fullmetal jacket

1988

A short film about love
Gandahar
Grave of the fireflies
My neighbor Totoro

1989

Crimes and misdemeanors
My left foot

And I miss a lot of classics that hopefully will be able to see rather soon. For some reason I tend to stick to the 3.5 and 4 territory with the standard 80s franchises. I guess because I can't deny the merits but don't feel a special appreciation for them either.

But yeh I am looking forward to this. Everyone knew the top 2 for the 90s but I have no idea what people are going to vote for with this decade.

I think Blue Velvet will probably be quite high too, it'll probably be on of the top choices on my list and all the Lynch fans will undoubtedly vote for it :p

I think Empire Strikes Back and Back to the Future are probably the most universally loved, I don't think the first will win though, but it is very rare to find someone who doesn't like Back to the Future.

Unfortunately I don't think Brazil has a chance of winning, whilst some people love it, like you and I (it'll be near the top of my list), I feel there are equally as many people who dislike it :p Where as something like the Star Wars films or Back to the Future seem to be less polarising and have a more 'universal appeal'

Yeah, as a kid it was a bright colourful novelty comedy with a hint of peril.

As an adult it's a brooding mystery full of great chunks of humour and some darker tones.

Strange film with that fact really, it changes as you get older.

Well, it's not THAT weird.
It has a proper plot and it has something to say, but it just happens to take place in a crazy fantasy future retro world. It's not as weird as Eraserhead for instance.
It is pretty surrealistic at some times, but it's certainly all very understandable and possible to follow (at least to me it seemed that way).

A few bloody feet is enough to keep you from voting for Die Hard?!

That's so true! Blockbusters still have a chance of beating The Godfather in the 1970's!

I'm on the fence about E.T.

I liked it a lot as a child. I bought the DVD many years ago. It was one of the first DVDs I ever bought.

Yet I've never bothered to watch it. I sure hope it's not a defective disc because I certainly can't return it now.

I would really like to see E.T. make it as well, but it's doubtful I'll have room for it. I thought the 90s was hard but the 80s are really stressing me out. It doesn't seem like as many people feel so negatively about E.T. as they do Titanic, but maybe I just missed those posts. Besides thinking Titanic's special effects were really good (the sinking ship looked fantastic) I did not like it at all. I have a special place in my heart for E.T, but no room in my list. :(

Though, how are the rules for voting for TV series? For instance, in the top of the 1990's there were people voting for a single episode of a TV series (Twin Peaks pilot) while here there are people voting for whole TV series that have been also adapted as movies (Fanny and Alexander).

The rule is no voting for TV series. ;) If you submit Fanny and Alexander you're submitting the movie version. So far I've made exceptions for The Decalogue and I'll do the same for Berlin Alexanderplatz because they're both referred to as a film in many places and both have been released theatrically.

I think one of the best things about the 80's list is that there are a good 5-6 films in with a shout of winning the thing as opposed o the Millenium/90's list where it felt like 1 or 2 only had a chance.

Well, the Twin Peaks pilot, David Lynch shot additional footage and created what's now known as a 'European Pilot' which made it two hours long and a film version in case it wasn't picked up as a TV series, but it was never theatrically released as far as I'm aware :p

95% chance it's either Empire, Raiders, or Blade Runner.

That will more than likely be in my top 10 maybe even 5, amazing film.

I wonder how high Platoon will be. Unless i see a hidden gem in the next few months it will top my list, i predict top 20. Then again i thought Unforgiven was going to be 6 or 7th so it could be lower.

I just watched Dressed To Kill. I really enjoyed it, along with Carrie it's the only De Palma film i've liked. I've only watched Carrie, Dressed to Kill, Scarface, The Untouchables, Raising Cain, Carlito's Way, Mission: Impossible and Snake Eyes so i've got a few films to still watch of his. I did enjoy it, especially the twist that genuinely surprised me something that's becoming more and more rare, but it will not be on my list.
