Can you name 25 radical non-narratives made in Madagascar?
Latin America is a subcontinent of 500 million people which has actually produced thousands of black and white films. Same applies to Africa and the Middle East. You can seriously make a list of top 25 1970's black and white movies made in those places if you want to do it.
Oh, I'm sorry! Are we taking each other seriously now?

New members can send in a list as soon as they've been a member here for one month. This measure is taken so that the list isn't influenced by members who've been on here for a week and then pack their bags and never come back.
T_L_P, if you're still here around the 15th go ahead and send me a list. You're only 2 days out from being eligible, which is close enough to prove you're sticking around for at least a little while. Just for myself, as some sort of checklist, I'm just posting a list of the '80s films I still REALLY want to watch before submitting my definite list.
Love Streams (1984)
Angel Heart (1987)
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988) - Which version should I watch?
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)
Broadcast News (1987)
Angel Heart (1987)
Down By Law (1986)
This Is Spinal Tap (1984)
The Right Stuff (1983)
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
The Elephant Man (1980)
Ordinary People (1980)
The Blues Brothers (1980)
I probably won't be able to see them all, as the deadline is the 15th of january and I have to study for my exams (they start on the 6th), but I'll try to watch as many as possible. Any other recommendations are still welcome, of course. :)

cobpyth, you should definitely watch The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Down By Law, and Spinal Tap. i watched the first two recently for this list and loved them. they're all going to make my list, although down by law might get forced off eventually. broadcast news and the elephant man are good, but i didn't really care for them a whole lot. cinema paradiso was kinda boring, but alright i guess (i watched the 2 hour version). i need to watch love streams again at some point, because i was almost falling asleep when i was watching it, and i'm not sure if that was my fault or the movie's.
also, everyone should add these movies to watch these before submitting their list if they haven't seen them:
lost in america
modern romance

talk radio
caddyshack
once upon a time in america
pale rider

They only have a little bit of the show in GERMAN (f**king foreigners) but they have the intro to the show. Do you know how long it's been since I last heard the song, "Your Feet's Too Big?" LOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG. I forgot ALL about the song - until now. It just came back to me. Locked away up in my head was an .mp3 of "Your Feet's Too Big" that was all dusty and cobwebby and probably in therapy due to severe neglect and abandonment, but now Youtube has just Pledge furniture polished that "Your Feet's Too Big" .mp3 up in my brain. I completely remember it now. Isn't it unbelievable how there is so much up in your brain that you can't access? It's like having the biggest book shelf that you can't use. I increased my proportion of foreign films in this list:
1990's - 10 foreign
1980's - 18 foreign
Though I prioritized foreign movies this time, the 1990's list was just the top 25 movies in my top 200 that were made in the 1990's.
However, I expect to reach my peak levels of foreign film in the 1950's list.

I'm one of the few who doesn't think Stalker is that visually-impressive, but it's obviously a serious (too serious?) work of art, as is TCTWL.
Mr Minio

I'd say when it comes to camera movement Stalker is much better than the aforementioned Greenaway film.
If we are talking about scenography, though, then Tarkovsky's masterpiece ain't got sh*t on 'The Cook...'.

Not sure I'd agree with that, I am going off memory but I loved how the camera was used to move between the different sections of the massive building in Cook. I mean look at the beginning of the film (the first two minutes is one shot), there's loads to admire here:

And whilst I loved Stalker I didn't find the camera movement that great/noticeable?

Quick reminder for you lovely MoFos:
The deadline for list entries is the 15TH JANUARY, so you have just over TWO WEEKS to watch what you need to and get your list to me.
I'm not going to be strict with the deadline, but just so you're aware I'll be officially closing the voting at around about 11:59pm, my time (GMT) on the 15th. So be sure you have your lists submitted in plenty of time. US MoFos especially.
Until then, happy listing. I'll be sending quintessential 80s movie villains after any slackers.

Why not?
It's forced, it is too self conscious of itself. Trying too hard to be radical ("look how awful: they are eating the penis of a man") and the use of color is too obvious. It's feels like a typical work of half serious modern art.
In my honest opinion. I watched it after reading a review of GotF on the IMDB, it's a good movie, I rate it as 73/100. But since it's so self conscious I think it isn't a great work of art.
And more impressive visually than Stalker? That comes down to taste. Stalker and The Mirror are certainly the two live action movies whose visuals impressed me the most. In animation it's PM and PMMM 1 & 2.
I wasn't very impressed visually by The Thief.... though I found it to be memorable. It's just not my type of visuals, in the same way just pilling up sh*t over a piece of newspaper and showing it on a museum doesn't make it a serious work of art. I am not a big fan of modern art.
Good call. I'll start refining. Don't hesitate to spam this thread and/or start mass PMing people, either. That's all totally reasonable given how easy it is to forget.

the 80s is full of great films, but so is every decade. it still might be my least favorite decade of the ones that i've seen enough of.
From Michael J. Anderson over at Tativille:
As I have noted before, one reason for the persistently low opinion of the 1980s as a decade for film art is that such a large number of its greatest works remain unavailable to audiences in this country. Supreme achievements by directors of Hou Hsiao-hsien's (A City of Sadness, 1989), Edward Yang's (Taipei Story, 1985) and Alain Resnais' (Mélo, 1986) stature exist only in foreign-region DVDs or bootleg videocassette versions at best, while those of other masters, such as Manoel de Oliveira (Francisca, 1981) and Jacques Demy (A Room in Town, 1982), continue to be even more obscure.
I've managed to find three of these films, the Hou, Oliveira and Demy, all of which are certainly magnificent films, as is The Three Crowns of the Sailor, which this article is about. However, I have yet been unable to find the Resnais and Yang (a real shame, it stars Hou Hsiao-Hsien) as well as many of Anderson's favorite films from the era. It seems very unlikely that the 1980s would just have worse films in general than the decades prior to and succeeding it. I think there's still a lot more to the 80s to discover.
It's interesting, I always had this idea in my head that the 80s was a great decade for movies but was looked down upon due to the disposable music and fashion of the time. As I started re-watching some of my favourites from that decade I realised that they were really not very good. However, there are a number of fantastic films from the era that I hadn't actually heard of before. Bluedeed highlighted some directors who may make my list but I haven't seen those specific films.
My 80s list is much stronger than my 90s list and it basically contains none of the movies that I initially thought would make it. Hou's A Time to Live, A Time to Die is also great as is Yang's The Terrorizers. Angelopoulos' Landscape in the Mist, Hartley's The Unbelievable Truth and Wender's Wings of Desire are worth a look. If anyone doesn't like subtitles, Hartley's is in English.

My Draft for my 80s list is considerably weaker than my milenium and 90s list as far as how much I like the movies. This is more evident once I get past the top 15, hopefully this list will introduce some great films to me, because I'm lacking the 80s love right now

EDIT 18/09 - Putting all the film-specific decisions from questions regarding eligibility here so everybody's clear.
Krzysztof Kieslowski's The Decalogue is allowed and should be submitted as one entry [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=956665#post956665)
Claude Berri's Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources should be submitted separately [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=963553)
Godard's Histoire(s) du cinéma is not eligible [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=962915#post962915)
Berlin Alexanderplatz is eligible [link] (http://www.movieforums.com/community/showthread.php?p=958551)

Sorry, twenty-five, not thirty. Go back to the first page and read the instructions. Basically, give a list, numbered 1-25. The film you list at #1 gets assigned 25 points, #2 gets 24 points, on down to your #25, which gets 1 point.
There are other rules on how to break up film series and such. It's on the first page.
And don't post that list here, but send it in a private message so it can be tabulated with everybody else's. A message to Skepsis93.

Don't forget to include such science fiction classics as The Wings of Honnêamise (1987).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a2/HonneamiseHD.jpg/220px-HonneamiseHD.jpg
It's as respected as Blade Runner among people who have watched both and it's more respected than stuff like Akira among people that watched both. Wikipedia says:
"Wings has received universal acclaim from film critics since its release in 1987. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times called it "a visually sensational two-hour extravaganza".[14] DVD Times said that the animation "gives the storyteller complete control over what you see and ultimately how the viewer interprets the directors dream...the astounding animation, the attention to detail seen in every frame is quite daunting, but allows the viewer to discover new subtleties on repeated viewing."[15] DVD Vision Japan praised the Japanese voice actor's performances for their range and emotion, as well as the "very distinctive" characters.[16] In a discussion of original versus adapted anime,[17] Brian Hanson of Anime News Network goes on to say:
"It's set on a quasi-alternate-reality version of Earth, but without reams of bogus sci-fi hokum, and the screen is littered with wonderful art direction of a world that's sort of familiar, but wonderfully alien. Just look at, for example, the guns the characters use - they're not laser pistols or handguns, but these strange little things that still look like guns, but cleverly modified to fit within the rest of this wonderful universe that Gainax created.
And the story! Oh, man! It's not some spunky kid out to save the universe. It's not a band of merry adventurers battling an onslaught of demons. None of that. It's a tender story of a bored and broken man seeking redemption, pouring himself into a cause that he finds important that everyone else thinks is a laughable joke, and finding spiritual enlightenment in spite of his entire endeavor being twisted by corrupt politicians as an excuse to wage war. It's about one man coming to terms with himself. It's a story that's mature, resonant, and authentic. Every single thing in that movie is wholly idiosyncratic. It's wonderful. And not only is it unique, it is exceptionally well done. Every frame is teeming with detail."
Okada felt in retrospect that it needed a stronger screenplay, that it was too niche and like an "art" film to be really mainstream and successful - the film did not recoup its budget at the box office.[18]"

i love the 80's for one reason: it has great movies from all genres, especially the erotic thriller type, and the action movies, and most of all, we had purely R-rated movies, where 99% of the time there is a chance of boobies, nowadays its just a half assed R-rated supposedly which it isn't not even close to R-rated, hope this changes with 50 shades of grey.
Might want to check the rules:
"Those revealing their lists before the countdown has ended will be disqualified. That just defeats the point of the whole thing."

No need to be antagonistic. I was helping someone who posted a list in another thread then linked to it here - they've since deleted the post.

The 70s could be just as popular, but going further back than that people start having seen less and less, yeah.

Well, if people are given enough time, they can explore the decade a little bit before sending in a list.
This list made me watch a lot of great '80s films for example and although I have seen a fair amount of '70s films, the next list will make me watch a lot of other '70s films.
If everyone does that, we should be fine until the '30s and get a decent amount of list entries for each decade. It's pretty idealistic, though, so I guess the quantitiy of list entries will descend pretty significantly after the '60s (if we'd ever think of going that far back).

I think this will probably be the last decade themed top 100 I participate in. I really struggled to compile my list. I don't think I've even seen 25 movies from the 1970s that I enjoyed and some of those are either nostalgic favorites or the "so bad they're good" kind of films.

I don't want to corrupt you, but if bare boobies are what you seek, this here internets thing is absolutely FULL of 'em. And if you must see them in a narrative film, pick virtually any title from any country other than the United States and there will be both casual and graphic nudity apelnty.
I'd say "enjoy", but sounds like you're way ahead of me.

Do you think I'll be putting forward the 25 'best' films of the 70's? Hell, do you think I've done the best 25 for any decade thus far? They're your choices, you put up what you want and, if you want some suggestions, just let me know. :)

That is sad, indeed. But with the amount of films available these days, as well as the number of ways they are available, there ain't really an excuse for that. The good news is this is very easy to correct! :D

Yeh what Miss Vicky is describing sounds like what Sexy Celebrity has done for every list.
Just checked my IMDB and there's loads of great 70s that I have seen:
The Long Goodbye, The Conformist, Stalker, Taxi Driver, Le Cercle Rouge, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, El Topo, Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia, Eraserhead, House, Walkabout, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Jaws, Chinatown, Mirror, The French Connection, Five Easy Pieces, The Exorcist, Dog Day Afternoon and Network
That's 21 films I would say are 'great' already and of course there's plenty of time to see more, seems to be a more diverse list with more artistic/foreign stuff too, so would be interesting to see what type of films MoFos could manage to get on it

But I don't think I can even come up with 25 movies doing that. Even if I put in Caligula and both of the 70s Herbie movies. I'm looking through 70s movies on IMDb and most of them I've either not seen, didn't like, or haven't seen since childhood so can't really rate them.

Ahem. I didn't struggle with this list. In fact, I had a new gameplan.
I put up movies that I thought had a very good chance of making it, in hopes of giving them more points and ensuring they'd be on the list, thus hopefully keeping off some of those Japanese jelly beans that might have sneaked onto the list without deserving it.
I learned my lesson the last time when I put up all of my favorite '90s movies and none of them showed up. That Honeykid motto of, "Put up things you love!" is list suicide.

Let's get House in the top ten somehow.
You'll have lots of time to watch appropriate movies when we get to each decade's list. There are lots which people can enjoy, and we have a few members who will point you to something you'll like. I've been updating my ratings at IMDb, so I know there's way more good "old" films than some of you think. Look forward to it! It's only homework if you take that attitude. :)

1984: 4 films
1985: 3 films

1988: 4 films
1989: 3 films
And 3 of the 1980 films are in my top 10, so I guess that's my favorite year too!
