This is considered the first stand-up comedy album, even though Mort Sahl did "At Sunset" in 1955, which is now in the Library of Congress (especially since it was recorded and sold without his permission)

Nails - Abandon all Life - 3.5+ (with room to grow)

At only 18 minutes long, the sophomore album of grindcore/powerviolence band Nails is full of raw, angry intensity. That's what I want right now and therefore, I really enjoyed this album. With such a short length I blasted through it, but nonetheless spent all 18 minutes sucked into the incredible furiousness of Abandon All Life. Need to check out their debut now.

One of my favorite albums by one of my favorite rappers. Nas really comes out of his shell on this follow-up to Illmatic, transcending boom bap and adopting heavier themes and loftier concepts. With these leaps forward, we also begin to notice his questionable ear for beats and his weak hook writing, but those become secondary the more familiar you become with his work. The opening track The Message is a mafioso collage reminiscent of Kool G Rap which samples one of Nas' own lines in a grand display of ego. If I Ruled The World and I Gave You Power are two legendary topical tracks. Affirmative Action is a deep posse cut and the best cut to come out of the short-lived Firm collective. Love this record. 4.5

Ronnie Laws - Pressure Sensitive

Terrific saxophonist makes a terrific jazz-funk record. This vinyl was one of the many given to me by my dad, and I'm very happy to have it included in my collection. I had a lot of funk listening to it. A nice blend of the two genres I'm really focusing on exploring right now - jazz and funk.

Managed to miss this release from one of my favorite bands of all time. Bad mistake, it's another heavy metal album to top the UK charts in recent years together with Black Sabbath's 13th.

Iron Maiden has stablished itself as the most consistent music band of all time.

This is a record that always puts me in a good mood. The Monkees fought against their producers to make this, an entire album where they played their own instruments, chose or wrote their own songs, and the results are loose, fun, and memorable. Best Tracks: "Randy Scouse Git," "You Just May Be The One," and "No Time." 5

Along with Bonito Generation, which I still listen to religiously, these are my current go-to albums. Have been loving them a lot.

Mndsgn - Breatharian

http://i.imgur.com/LGyrXSs.jpg?1

Quick to fall in love with this one. Reminds me somewhat of Flying Lotus, and I notice some juke influence in here as well. But Mndsgn is ultimately his own guy, musically. Thank goodness he has quite a few more albums to devour, because I really dug this one. Favorite track is probably "Greendowns Wit 0."

-------

Shlohmo - Dark Red

http://i.imgur.com/pFnk0KX.jpg?1

This one grew on me over time. At first, I was appreciating it more than enjoying it. Not sure what changed, but I have since fallen in love with it. I love how moody it is, I think, most of all. Picking a favorite track is tough here, because it's such a cohesive album, but if I had to pick one it might be "Meet Ur Maker".

-------

Blank Banshee - Mega

http://i.imgur.com/AN5NrxV.jpg?1

Really cool album that I have found myself returning to quite a bit. Favorite track is probably "My Machine" - love how he utilizes his voice in that song.

-------

Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition

http://i.imgur.com/tQynsVt.jpg?2

The all-star album of these four. One of my new favorite rap albums of all-time. Brown has such a wild personality that really comes through here, really adds to what is already musically and lyrically fantastic. Also, this dude has drug problems. If that wasn't obvious. :D While Brown's voice was an acquired taste I didn't take to right away (I love it, now), I was immediately drawn to this album musically, especially the percussion. Favorite track would have to be "Ain't It Funny".

Been getting more into black metal (and depressive black metal) lately, still a noob with it but here are two that have especially resonated with me.

Burzum - Hvis lyset tar oss - 5

http://i.imgur.com/F4eg3Kk.jpg?1

Easily the greatest black metal album I've heard yet. I have listened to Burzum's album Filosofem before and while I like that one a lot, this one resonates with me more due to it's incredible, wintery atmosphere. It's rare and blissful to be transported in your mind by an album to the degree I am listening to this one.

Forgotten Tomb - Songs to Leave - 4

http://i.imgur.com/T0SRrGB.jpg?1

In my search for depressive black metal, this one stood out from the pack and stuck with me for some reason. I really love the vocals on it. Of course, the great thing to me about black metal and why I've been so interested in it is the dark atmosphere that tends to go hand-in-hand with it. Something as bleak as this really sticks with me, even if I'm not particularly depressed myself.

Cool! Emperor is my favorite of the early Norwegian crop, though I love the experimental tendencies that came out in a lot of mid-late 90's bands (Arcturus, Solefald, Diabolical Masquerade, Sigh, etc.).

Really funny but not great musically. But their 13 genres of rock and metal song was pretty funny:

Although you have to be Brazilian and speak Portuguese to understand the cultural references (lots of references to classic Brazilian country and folk songs).

BEST ALBUM EVER. 100/100. It likes, lower the scores of all other albums ever made a bit. :D And the funny thing is that it was made by a group of Finnish young adults. :D

It's like Slayer: they are 55-60 years old whose all best songs were written when they were 20 to 25 years old.

Was listening to Lindsey Buckingham/Christine McVie's self-titled album released this year. I thought it lazy and lacking spark on the first listens, but it grabs you more on each listen (McVie's songs more than Buckingham's, though). Not a patch on good ol' Fleetwood Mac days, but listening Christine McVie on a new record was something I thought would never happen.

Yeah, Songs to Leave is one of the best "Depressive Black Metal" albums ever imo!

Mental Funeral is great.

Not sure how to rate these, so I won't, but these are the albums I've been listening to a lot lately.

Nicolas Jaar - Space is Only Noise

https://i.imgur.com/EeixdLb.png

Listening to a lot of Jaar, particularly his debut and Nymphs. Thing I love about Space is Only Noise is how immensely playful much of it is.

Nicolas Jaar - Nymphs

https://i.imgur.com/ajh4FDG.jpg?2

Nymphs is just as good, and maybe even more sonically interesting, than his debut. I still have yet to explore his other albums in full, which I intend to do.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Garden of Delete

Perhaps the greatest and most innovative of our current electronic music geniuses.

Jamie XX - In Colour

Despite having a track or two I'm not crazy about, overall this album is very enjoyable, with some songs, like "SeeSaw," that I downright love.

There is a LOT of stuff I've never heard of on here. But here;s what I've been listening to:

Rush - All The World's a Stage - 2112 era live album, worth listening to for some virtuoso playing. "Bastille Day" and "Anthem" are my favorites on this. 4.5

Les Claypool's Duo De Twang - Four Foot Shack - Ever wanted to know what Primus would sound like as a bluegrass band? Wonder no more. This album is pretty fun, but I don't think I'll go back to it very often. 3.5

Primus - The Desaturating Seven - Primus goes full Prog Rock on this, and it is glorious. Discordant, silly, and brilliant. 5

The Claypool Lennon Delirium - Lime and Limpid Green EP - Sean Lennon and Les Claypool cover some psychedelic classics like Pink Floyd and King Crimson on their second CD together, and it's a trip. Masterful. 5

GWAR - The Blood of Gods - GWAR can never die, and this album proves it. New lead scumdog, Blothar the Berzerker turns in a respectable first effort, and the songs are crass, vile, and hilarious, as always. Best tracks: "El Presidente," "Swarm," and "F***this Place."4

Slayer are kind of OG Edgelords, but despite some of their corny lyrics their music still sounds really good.

Nils Frahm Spaces 4 - Intimate yet intense collection of Frahm originals, mostly done live, with some intimations of Phillip Glass but totally true to his personal muse. Hard to believe that one man could utilize so many different sounds and emotions alone on stage.

Ayalew Mesfin Hasabe (My Worries) 3.5 - Ethiopian folk, soul and groove from a protest singer who was banned for 13 years from music by the then-Communist regime for singing about personal freedom. Reflective of other African music of the era of the 1970s but filtered through Meslin's unique voice and vocals. Listening to his more-upbeat tracks, it's easy to see why he was considered the James Brown of Ethiopia. Here's one of his more contemplative tracks.

Less Wise Modified - Cody Jinks (2010/2017) - 5

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41pLa--pi4L._SS500.jpg

You won't like it if you don't like country music, but if you do like country music, but you also get tired of modern country music, this album is for you. Thankfully Cody Jinks is becoming more well known, but he still isn't really a blip on the radar of most music fans on the internet. I think he is a tremendous songwriter and has the voice to fit the material. He's what country music needs, and this is a reissue of an early album that adds some production value to an album that was already good, but benefited from some added crispness of sound.

Wrangled - Angaleena Presley (2017) - 5

https://cdn.pastemagazine.com/www/articles/Angaleena-Presley-1487352516.jpg

I could start this out with the same sentence as I did for the Jinks album. One of my favorite things in country music is the album that gives the middle finger to Nashville and whoever else might need it. This album is a big FU to Nashville, and hits on some social issues that are not often found in modern country music. I was totally enthralled by this album on first listen, so perhaps I overrated it. I'll be sure to revisit it start to finish at some point to double-check.

Muddy Waters - Redman (1996) - 3.5

https://is1-ssl.mzstatic.com/image/thumb/Music60/v4/f9/e0/5b/f9e05b84-044c-d574-058d-a73380e8f31a/dj.jivhntse.jpg/1200x630bb.jpg

Redman is tremendously talented as an MC, he's a joy to listen to. He goes hard, he gets grimy, and it just sounds like you want hardcore rap to sound like. Lyrically he's also very talented. His albums, from what I've heard, tend to feature very good beats. So, what keeps this from being a classic record? The skits. Just take those things out of there and you have an amazing album. So many skits, and they aren't funny and don't add anything the music itself doesn't take care of.

Blind Baby Has It's Mothers Eyes - Les Rallizes dénudés - 5

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PhJRkTZ7THk/Tfflja_C8jI/AAAAAAAAAGY/IXUjZgPfD1s/s1600/LesRallizesDenudes-BlindBabyHasItsMothersEyes.jpg

I'll just give everything five stars, because I am easy to please. I listened to this because I saw it when I looked this band up on Apple Music after looking at Mr Minio's RYM page. Turns out he's a big fan of this band, but he rated this one about a popcorn and a half lower than me. I'm guessing this album is much more accessible than the ones he is in love with. This album is great though, with simple drums and a very enjoyable bassline as a foundation to support some crazy guitar noise sh*t that would be what Jimi Hendrix would be into if he went mad before he died. Also sounded like The Stooges if they were more experimental. I have a hard time with ratings, because how in the world do I compare this with Cody Jinks and Angaleena Presley who I love for totally different reasons? Neither of those two country albums have the musical audacity of this album, neither of them are as hypnotic, but they are equals in my eyes. It's weird to compare and contrast them, because I am talking about why one is as good as the other, but I don't really have anything bad to say about the three of them. I also don't know why I feel as though I have to preface or justify my five star rating of country music. Hopefully I can get out of that mindset.

Batsumi - Batsumi (1974) - rating_4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIHNXGRy4ag
During the brutal era in South African history known as Apartheid, the minority-white ruling party forcibly moved millions of black South Africans from their homes to segregated areas, stripping them of their citizenship and reassigning them to tribal Bantu status. But even in the face of this outrageous oppression, South African music thrived. Artists like pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (formerly known as Dollar Brand), and multi-instrumentalist Hugh Masekela gained fame both within the country and beyond. But Ibrahim and Masekela were the exceptions, rather than the rule. Because they both lived and toured abroad, it was easier for their music to get attention. For local South African musicians, operating under the threat of state violence, breaking through to European and American audiences was much harder.

From this difficult environment came the self-titled debut from Soweto band Batsumi, one of the region’s most unusual and lush jazz albums. First reissued by UK/South African label Matsuli in 2011, and recently re-pressed on clear vinyl, Batsumi sits alongside the Asiko Rock Group’s album and Mor Thiam’s Drums of Fire as true crate-digger classics—exceptionally rare albums that far exceed the hype generated by their scarcity. Batsumi was inspired by the Black Consciousness Movement of the late 1960s, which was led by anti-Apartheid activist Steve Biko, whose writings and famous slogan “Black is Beautiful” sought to empower black South Africans. The movement was an assertion of pride, and Batsumi’s raw, indigenous jazz is filled with the same sense of serene self-love that Biko preached.

By the early 1970s, the two major anti-Apartheid parties—the Pan Africanist Congress and the African National Congress—had been outlawed by the ruling National Party, and were operating underground. Batsumi leader and guitarist Johnny Mothopeng’s father had been the president of the Pan Africanist Congress and was subsequently imprisoned. The younger Mothopeng saw Black Consciousness as a way to “keep the fires burning.” That heat and resilience can be heard throughout Batsumi.

Batsumi was released in 1974 on the Records & Tapes imprint, a subsidiary of Satbel. Yet in an all-too-familiar pattern, Records & Tapes—a white-owned company—paid the band next-to-nothing, and barely promoted the album. Still, Batsumi was incredibly popular on tour, and for years played to large crowds at festivals and stadiums across South Africa. Batsumi doesn’t sound like afro-spiritual jazz in the vein of Alice Coltrane or Pharoah Sanders. Instead, it’s more beguiling and weightless; its five tracks flow seamlessly—blending flutes, saxophones, winding bass and soulful vocals into a gorgeous suite of nuanced melody. Most of the band couldn’t read or write sheet music, and learned to play by ear instead. Their saxophone player, Themba Koyana, listened to jazz legend Charlie “Bird” Parker until he sounded just like him. Throughout the album, the band sounds equally relaxed and intense, as if they knew their music meant a great deal to the community it served. On “Lishonile” and “Anishilabi,” in particular, Batsumi is both free and electrifying.

According to Mothopeng, the studio sessions were brisk, moving quickly from one track to the next. The band rehearsed and memorized the core melodies of each song, then stretched them out and let them wander during the recording sessions. On the album’s longest tracks, “Lishonile” and “Itumeleng,” the group launches into propulsive blasts before settling into expansive grooves, allowing the wind instruments to hover around the bass and drums before vocal chants arise. “Emampondweni” and “Mamshanyana” are loose and floral, recalling some of the more swinging sides of the Canterbury scene and Sly Stone’s freewheeling cuts on his Stone Flower label. The final track—the radiant “Anishilabi”—feels especially remarkable: a joyous clarion call of courage.

Perhaps the most unique element of Batsumi is the way it blends jazz and South African indigenous folk music. The vocals are in Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan, and the lyrics cover a broad range of topics: heroes (“Moshanyana”), ancestry (“Empondoweni”), and providing for one’s family (“Itumeleng”). Unlike their contemporaries Dashiki Poets (http://www.3rdearmusic.com/hyarchive/hywhere/hywhere13.html)—who also made indigenous jazz, but wrote more explicitly political lyrics—Batsumi are less didactic. Their music is still political, but it uses poetry and grace to achieve its rhetorical goals rather than anthem and slogan. For Mothopeng and the other members, singing unapologetically in native languages while fusing indigenous folk music and jazz was inherently political, a musical confirmation of dignity. Twenty years after the fall of Apartheid, Batsumi remains sublime and transformative, and its resonance hasn’t faded at all over the years.

Don't care too much for Lydia Lunch's vocals, but I really like the grittier version of this song. The rest of the EP is really cool too. 2nd track gives me Ministry vibes, 3rd is a nice, customarily Thirlwell jazz tune, and 4th is an awesome noisy Beatles cover.:)

Pretty disappointing, but I feel like this could be a launching pad for something really great from Kacey. I am a fan of her first two albums, particularly her last one, but this one is missing something. I hate the drums in it, but the music choices aren't all doing it for me. I am fine with her trying to go more pop and spacey, but I think it's missing something and doesn't really sound as unique as I think Kacey is going for. "Space Cowboy" is tremendous though.

I listened to Kanye's MBDTF again, still 5

More of the same from Chris Stapleton. It's good, but doesn't really stand-out the way Traveller did. If you like that album though, you'll dig both From a Room albums. This album along with the other From a Room suffers a bit from samey-ness.

I can't wait to really get into their discography, because I feel like something great is probably there. This album has good music, good singing and really interesting lyricism. The problem with the album is that a lot of the songs kind of blend together, but even if a lot of them feel the same, at least the are good songs that sound the same.

This album is anchored by a couple of songs that are really fantastic, and the rest of the album carries enough of their own weight not to drag it down. Unlike the previous two albums, this album's strength is that the stand-out tracks are different from one another and offer different glimpses at Childers.

This was always an album I did not listen to in its entirety. One song here, one there. I always loved My Twin in private and listened to several others here and there, gradually I found the CD more and more seductive. Today I can not choose what to hear, between one and the other, so the way is to hear from beginning to end. A depressing atmosphere, it sounds pestilent, very good! I recommend (as well as the rest of the discography). An album hard to love, but if you come to love will be unconditional, I assure you

Pauline Oliveiros - Four Electronic Pieces 1959-1966 - 4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6Ssy15I-bg

My work with electronic music began in 1959. My first tape piece was an ambitious four channel work called Time Perspectives. The piece was made by recording small sounds from objects resonated on a wooden wall and changing the tape speed. I used cardboard tubes as filters by inserting the mic into the tube and recording sources through the tubes. I used my bath tub as a reverberation chamber. Sections of the piece were improvised and then subjected to speed changes (the recorder had two fixed speeds 7 and 1/2 IPS, 3 and 3/4 IPS and hand wound variable speed). When the San Francisco Tape Music Center was established together with Ramon Sender and Morton Subotnik there was a pool of equipment to use and I began to work with electronic sound. Rather than cut and splice small pieces of tape together to make a composition I chose to work in real time. I used two tape machines with the tape running across both machines to make a delay system. I used two or more oscillators at high frequencies to produce difference tones. These tones would also interact with the bias frequencies of the tape recorders. I would play the oscillators into the tape recorders improvising my way through the piece. My system of composing in this manner was my own invention.

I'm giving Daytona a 4.5 and The Story of Adidon a straight up 5

Admittedly, I am probably the biggest Kanye fan, so I am still trying to figure out how to separate that from my rating. I'd probably give it a 4.5 on first listen. I love how everything Kanye does feels experimental or ahead of the curve. Even when he does stuff that other people do, such as the trappy style rapping cadence, he presents an overall package that is uniquely him. He is somehow arrogant and self-conscious and self-aware and humorous all at the same time. He embraces his bi-polar disorder and all of the flack he gets, but he also lets the world in on his real life situation when he admits his wife feels the blow back of all the things he does as well. I already think Kanye is the greatest musical artist we've seen since we've been able to record music, so it's probably not a surprise that I think he's done it again.

It seems that way. She's the catchiest part of ye, and folks are noticing. I saw that she had a little twitter exchange with Seth Rogen and she seemed really thrilled that he liked her part of the song. It made me feel good for her. Hopefully she keeps getting after it.

This is hard on so many levels.

Firstly, I'm mainly attracted to hip hop for that beautiful synergy, where the backing music, and the (often for my liking) laid back rapping actually make for a sick-assed aching, haunting track that I personally feel could break through to anyone. Because it's that beautiful and genre transcendent.

Alright, so I give 4 + to

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3548263327_10.jpg

It's really just...beautiful.

You can listen to it for free here, and if you download it, you decide what to pay for it. Personally, I went overboard on purpose. For all those who go minimal. I get it when you're strapped, I do. But in this regard, I went hard the other way. Because I want more like this to be made.

Genre: Indie Rock

Fairly modest and generally rather laconic in terms of tunes but has some darker, explicit, and at times nicely tongue-in-cheek or self-deprecating, lyrics. Probably only for those with some semblance of a sense of humour who don't take either themselves or life overly seriously.

Favourite tracks: Waiting On The Doorstep; That Life
Weakest links: When Everyone Cheers; Mental Conditions
Favourite lyric [Spiral Eyes]:
It's hard to shake the look of disdain,
When the corner of my eye's dominated by
That open zipper and the p*ss-stain

PAUL McCARTNEY - EGYPT STATION (2018)

The hype is real. This is Paul's best album in 3 decades. Every track sound really good. Not a dull moment.

Some tracks sounded like The Beatles. Others sounded like Wings.

At 76, Paul is still a badass and knows how to write a good ballad and awesome rockers that will blow your mind away.

Oh my god! Blast from the past! I think I mentioned this a few months ago in another thread. Thought I was the only person who heard of them.

I agree it's hit and miss, but it has a little something. Sad what happened.

I put one of the tracks in for a song tourney at one point (pretty sure it was Snooze Button - too lazy-arsed today to go check) - think it went out quite early though :(

The album's even more fun after a Nolans album or two - you should try it some time ;)

Yeah it was a shame .... cars ..... evil things :(

There is not a bad song on the album, but perhaps except for Marian (Version), none of them are particularly memorable nor on par with bangers like Temple of Love or Lucretia My Reflection. Still, it's a heck of a debut LP.

I listened to one of their albums from the last decade I haven't heard yet in anticipation of their new one, which comes out next week. It's very good, especially Gaza and the title track. For what it's worth, Lucky Man is an original song and not an ELP cover.
