Interesting list. I never really think of Karate Kid when I think of sports films. Love it and Million Dollar Baby. My list would have to include Remember The Titans and Field Of Dreams.

mastermetal777
03-03-13, 11:57 PM
Is the new Dredd seriously that good? I mean, the Stalone version was awful, but is this new one that redemptive?

The Rodent
03-03-13, 11:58 PM
Tbh, it's not a film I really like. It's good as it is but it's one of those films, like A Clockwork Orange for instance, that I don't see what the huge thing is.

The Rodent
03-03-13, 11:59 PM
Yes, Dredd is a fantastic film.

It is literally that, an actioner but has a bit of a brain behind it. You never seen it?
I think it's great, obviously...

Outweighs Stallone's abomination by miles.

Great effort Rodent! And for the most part I'd say they are pretty strong lists

Just a few quick thoughts -

Comedy films - Nice to see some rare love for Kingpin. Though I hated Caddyshack when I watched it.
Action films - Wow I knew you loved Dredd but didn't realise just how much you did.
Sci-fi... Films - Got to say I'm with cricket on Blade Runner. Only seen it the once but did nothing for me.
Superhero Films - What do you make of Iron Man and Thor by the way? And also shouldn't the Turtles be here?
Drama Films - 500 days of summer??? Love the film but in the drama section?

The Rodent
03-04-13, 06:35 PM
I went through all sorts of movies for the lists JayDee... yeah there were a few that narrowly missed out, Iron Man and Turtles... as for Thor, no way. Thor doesn't do anything for me.

It's like the worst films in the first post... there were sooo many that narrowly missed out... I could have made it a Top 100,000,000 Worst list...

Actually (500) Days Of Summer is classed as a drama...

As for Dredd, and for that matter Watchmen too... I really need to redo my Top 100 Favourites List... can't believe I didn't put those two on it... Dredd made action #1 and made comic book #2... really needs to go on my Top 100. Might even break my Top 10 tbh, I freakin' love that film.

Clever films...

The writer of the first two Screams (Kevin Williamson) didn't write the third one and his idea for it was to have five teenagers in Woodsboro form a Ghostface cult to outdo the town legacy of Billy and Stu. Thus, five killers = too many killers = crazy higher numbered sequel idea.

And when he came back to write Scream 4, he originally wrote that Sidney's brother in Scream 3 wasn't really her brother (which everyone found out afterwards), but just a crazy person pretending to be, but the producers didn't like that.

Nice list of films in the thriller genre. I've seen 5 from that list. Se7en is a great film, Misery is also very good, I've seen it more than three times and I enjoyed it each time, the same can be said about Ransom, and The Silence of the Lambs is also a good movie even though I didn't find it as suspenseful as I thought it was going to be. I didn't quite like Scorsese's Cape Fear, but I only saw the second half of the film, so I'll probably give it a go one day and watch the whole movie.

The list of your drama films is also pretty good, even though I've only seen four of them (no. 5, 6, 8 and 9) but they're all great, and I love it that you put Saving Private Ryan at number 1 in your list of war films. I haven't seen many war films, but Saving Private Ryan is a masterpiece.

Also love your comedies list, I also consider the first two to be my favourite comedies of all time. I see we have a quite similar taste :)

And that's why we have The Following, which is stupid, but is just the right side of entertaining to keep me coming back. For now. It's just been commissioned for a second season.

Yes, Giallo is indeed a sub genre you should check out Rodent. If I remember right, there are some topics on Giallo on mova with lists of films to try.

Used Future is the chap to check on, his review thread should have some good nods. Bava's Bay of Blood and most Argento's early work heavily influence the slashers you've listed.

Not to forget Come and See, Ivans Childhood and especially Battle of Algiers!!!

Come and See is quite bad in my honest opinion. Though I understand why someone would like it. Ivan's Childhood is also not among the top 10 best war movies ever and is Tarvkosky's worst film, still excellent, but not as good as the ones I indicated. One problem is that live action is not an adequate medium to portray children as child actors cannot be very good (they are children, obviously). Haven't seem Battle of the Algiers.

Anyway, this is Rodent's thread and I shouldn't have intervened.

? It's cool, I like input and the fact that my choices start conversations. I wouldn't post my choices if I didn't want people to talk about them and stuff.

No. I may try to watch it one day.

The examples I saw of children in movies, such as Fanny and Alexander, is that they behave too coldly, unlike real children, who tend to be very active and expressive. Come and See and Ivan's Childhood also suffer from this problem.

My Neighbor Totoro, by contrast, displays real childlike behavior. However, I think it may be very hard to emulate this on live action.

I don't know, but I think it's a little odd that the oldest film on your list is SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE.

Erm... really?

There's over 100 films in these lists that are older than 1987.
