I decided to share my top 100 movies. The list is pretty much in the right order and the rating is based on how much I liked the film and/or how good objectively I think it is.I will not write the review of each one,I will just explain what I liked most about it and why it made this list.It may be a quote,a scene,an idea, acting performance or multiple things.

I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi movies and my expectations weren't very high on this movie but it was good.I loved the costumes (or is it special effects) and the main reason why it made my list is that it managed to mix fantasy and war in one movie and not fail. It's cruel and full of fairytale fantasies at the same time. The pale monster is the most creative monster I've ever seen in film so far.If you like fantasy/sci-fi and you missed this movie, you made a mistake.

Have, but still haven't seen, Pan's Labyrinth. I'd like to watch this as a double bill with The Devil's Backbone, which I also have and have yet to watch. :D

I have to admit that the fantasy element of Pan makes me more reticent.

99.Miss Bala
http://i47.tinypic.com/2mr8fsx.jpg

I really wanted to add this movie because it is not very known but it is definitely worth watching. This film tells a story about a girl who just wants to win a beauty contest but in the end she gets mixed up in the Mexican drug business. It's not a fast and full of action film where a sexy girl just kicks bad guys and saves the day.It more of a realistic and deep drama about a lost woman who accidently gets involved in a drug-related violence.

98. Dogville
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcT7PBMmAbRnu6b69cWuzfUag4gP1_xcyqp1ZddOfc1vNbv8i0hxqbtLtiSj
Whether you like this movie or not,it's definitely a memorable experience.Lars Von Trier is not a director for anyone but I believe that everyone should see at least one of his movies.I don't think that Dogville is his best film but from what I've seen,it's my favorite.
It is quite a long movie and lasts about 3 hours but I looked at it as a modern fairytale because it has both elements.Grace is running from some gangsters and she comes to small city called Dogville where the locals let her stay and hide. However,as the time passes they start to manipulate and use Grace for their own purposes.
The plot is interesting,it's not jumpy so it wasn't boring or too complicated. The ending is unexpected although I have to warn you that the movie is quite disturbing at times.
Of course scenography and decorations are the most memorable because this movie is made like a theatre play. The are no walls,no doors,no spectacular scenery. There's just a floor and the whole Dogville city is painted with chalk. The director told that he did that to let the viewer concentrate on the characters and I must say that he succeeded.
Nicole Kidman did a great acting job,she managed to be vulnerable, hard working and raging at times.
There is also a lot of talk about the message of this movie but I believe that you should see this movie for it's original ideas in creating a scenery.

97. Mysterious Skin
http://i46.tinypic.com/dvjb6q.jpg

If you wasn't touched by this movie, then I guess you're a sociopath because this is one of the most dramatical movies I've seen. It's about two boys, very different boys yet they have one thing in common. But they don't know this yet.I will strongly recommend this movie for all drama fans. Also I haven't seen much of Joseph Gordon-Levitt but his performance seemed very committed and pure in this movie.I didn't place it higher because it didn't stuck in my mind for a long time but not to feel and experience it would be a loss.

96. Little Miss Sunshine
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTllUmXsyw9NmghTOdRP7odfeM_fjkbNddnYGAVVhxPa-MifQlFQyhteHAd
A few years ago,I was a huge fan of comedy/drama movies. But as I kept watching films, now I don't like this "laugh and tears" mix as much as I used to.Still, there are a few films(especially 2) which stayed in my mind and I enjoy them anytime and one of them is Little Miss Sunshine.
This movie isn't complicated. It does not talk about the meaning of life.It is not even full of special effects. But it's honest, optimistic, charming and innocent. At one point it makes you laugh,at another it makes you cry.I love it visually, colors are great,I love that it's so bright and light.
Performances are decent although I think Paul Dano deserved the Oscar more than Alan Arkin. And overall, judging from There Will Be Blood and Little Miss Sunshine I think that Paul Dano proved that he is a good actor and I hope that we will keep up the good work.
Want to see an easy and entertaining film?Instead of banal romance comedy watch this one.

Godoggo
11-13-12, 01:57 PM
Another favorite of mine. Little Miss Sunshine has a lot going for it especially the cast. I thought they were all brilliant. I'm a huge fan of Toni Collette and she was great as always.

By the way, have you seen Meek's Cutoff ? Paul Dano is in that and both he and the movie are really good.

Gabrielle947
11-13-12, 02:18 PM

Te rape scene was purely nasty an unessecary, the child pedophilia references and scenes even made this movie banned in sevral countries. You didn't find it disgusting?

Godoggo
11-14-12, 12:48 AM
I think pedophiles are disgusting, but I think the movie puts a very accurate, painful and human face on a dark, disturbing and unfortunately all too common issue. Yes, it's not an easy watch, but I don't believe it went too far or was gratuitous. To shy away from anything would make less of an emotional impact and wouldn't be as honest to the victims.

donniedarko
11-14-12, 01:01 AM
See I didn't feel an emotional impact. Especially with Gordin levites character, I think it got two explicit, goin in detail of the sextual activities happened and showing flash backs is a bit far IMO

honeykid
11-14-12, 09:58 AM
But graphic murder and torture is ok?

donniedarko
11-14-12, 10:15 AM
I'm not to comfortable with torture, especially the little torture porn section of "horror". But Mystierious Skin used pedophilia and rape to shock, and not to adress. I don't feel comfortable watching something that some governments have said, will be material for pedophiles.

honeykid
11-14-12, 10:26 AM
That's fair enough, I just thought I'd raise the point. I wouldn't put your faith in governments, though. Especially when it comes to 'decency' or 'obscenity'. Which governments, btw?

I found it emotionally tough and uncomfortable.Disgusting?I think you haven't seen really disgusting movies. :D
Mysterious Skin uses profanity to improve its idea and emotional depth. This movie creates a sad atmosphere right from the start and the end scenes just accomplish everything and gives viewers a really tough but realistic story.Even better thing is that it shows the problem (pedophilia) from two different viewpoints at the same time. And both tragic. It is not "wrapped in cotton wool" and this is what makes it stand out from other films. For me the disgust level was perfect - not too harsh and not too soft.
Of course it's all a matter of taste but there are tons of really disgusting movies where the show of disgust is just pointless.

95.Disturbia
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQAq5_HwRZ_xPLtyX4gLBLE53_kcsfza03DgtJgVbnOkSFVR7Xk-y4dlftL
For some movies I can't give a reason why I like them. They were just interesting or entertaining to watch.Disturbia is one of such movies.

It is an unofficial remake of Hitchcock's "Rear Window" and since "Rear Window" is one of my favorite Hitchcock films, maybe I just like that idea about stalking neighbors. :D

Another reason why I liked it was probably because I didn't have any expectations.I just caught it on TV (just when it started),the beginning was interesting and it became more and more intriguing towards the end.Of course,it is not as masterful as Rear Window but this movie doesn't even try to top it.It just gives more modernism into the story.

rauldc14

It's a fun watch of a movie. It's in my top 100 favorites as well. The concept is good like you said, even if it is a "Rear Window" remake.

My bad, I checked and it was almost banned in Australia on a 4-2 vote

Australia, where the Australian Family Association requested a review of its classification, seeking to have the film outlawed due to its depiction of pedophilia. They suggested that the film could be used by pedophiles for sexual gratification or to help them groom children for sexual abuse. The six-member Classification Review Board voted four-to-two in favour of maintaining an R18+ rating.

It was Australia and the reasoning was the fear that pedophiles could use the movie as a tool to groom young children into being victims. I could go on with the futility of that decision but this is Gabrielle's thread.

On to Disturbia. First movie I'm not in love with. It was o.k. I didn't hate it but I'll probably never watch it again.

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTNMh3MbvTWr2aBHoy-2DKot9jxPmhXjq55F2SLErxlgXxKl-GBiin7_9F8

Some time ago,I really loved this movie. Now I've seen more great films which were better but this one still sticks in my mind. This movie talks about meth and it was directed by Jonas Åkerlund who specializes in music videos and documentaries. So this is a fact-paced and quick movie.

So of course,it is not like Trainspotting or Requiem For A Dream. It's not a drama. It will not preach. But I don't that it's a comedy, too. One famous poet from my country once said that art can't preach. He also mentioned that true artist must have unique ideas and that art has to created aesthetic values. And Spun is not a clever movie, but it is stylish.

This film is not liked by critics and it is not liked by audiences. What I liked about it was the performances and the whole scene setting(also the decorations, make up,clothing).Brittany Murphy was great as Nikki.Mena Suvari did good too and overall I think she has potential.

Would I recommend it?Well,I would but I can't promise that you will like it.

93. Ocean's Eleven
http://i48.tinypic.com/2ijhydj.jpg

If you're a crime films fan,I believe that you will like this movie. It's not very smart and it's not a drama and it doesn't have acting like in The Godfather. But it's a great fun and entertainment. :)

Basically,I liked Ocean's sequels, too (I find it strange when people like only one movie out of all franchise, aren't they quite similar?) and I included only the first one in my list but I want you to know that I liked all the Ocean trilogy, more or less.

This was probably my first horror movie and it really was scary the first time but, despite this,I really wanted to know how it ends. Now since I've seen it about 3-4 times I know where the scary places are and I can really enjoy it now. :D

Not a masterpiece, not full of logic but entertaining and intriguing.

I am a fan of these type of films, when some group of people are looking for historical things, when they go to all kinds of deserted places, when they make some funny jokes on the way and when they get all types of ancient riddles. But there are only few such films who really stuck with me and was rewatched a lot of times and The Mummy is one of them.

And you can say that it's bad, illogical, stupid and so on but you can't deny that it's a bit of classic. :D Not in Indiana Jones level but still a fun watch.

Ok,10 already done,let's go forward

89. Операция Ы и другие приключения Шурика/Operation Y & Other Shurik's Adventures

http://i48.tinypic.com/kda8fb.jpg

This is the most popular and known Soviet Russia comedy who can be compared only to 12 Chairs, which is an another classic.I'm not sure whether English or Americans will get the humor but for me,living close to Russia,it was an awesome and really hilarious film.I hear phrases from this movie even today from regular people who maybe even haven't seen the film.

Operation Y is made from 3 short movies. All of them feature the same young and nerdy guy - Shurik. In the first segment an honest man Shurik and a cynical and impolite man Fedya cross paths at the construction site(Fedya was assigned to work there because of Shurik, and Shurik works there part-time) so they seek revenge to one another. In the the second segment Shurik has a final exam and he,with lots of other students, have a studying madness. In the final part(I would say the least popular) - we see a robbery which just goes wrong.

If you're a fan of Russian humor,it's a must see.I would also recommend it to anyone, who is interested in foreign cinema because it is a classic movie with plenty of laughs and hilarous situations.

88. Home Alone

http://i50.tinypic.com/2hx4ndu.png

Another film in my list which is not particularly good but it has become not even a classic but more of a tradition.Every year for,like,20 years on Christmas Day this film is shown on TV.And all those times I've seen it with my family. It's like part of Christmas. :D Something would be wrong it isn't shown.
And it doesn't even matter that Kevin is left alone at home again(for 20 years straight :D ) It is still a great entertainment which never gets boring. And anyway,Joe Pesci is in this movie and he does only good movies. :D
I also wonder is it as popular in other countries as it is in mine?I don't know,it would feel stupid if I recommend it,because I don't think that there is a person in the world who owns a TV and who hasn't seen this film yet. :D

Anyway I really like/love Ocean's Eleven, though I am one of those people who doesn't like the sequels. Charlie's Angels is a really fun film, just watched and reviewed it actually. You'll have a new best friend in Honeykid for listing that. :D

The Mummy is one I've always loved as well, it also made it onto my top 100 list. And Home Alone is wonderful. My no.1 Christmas flick.

yeah,I noticed that bottom 100 mostly belongs to classic but not so good movies but don't worry,it will get better. :D

87. La vita è bella / Life Is Beautiful

http://i48.tinypic.com/b4jlhj.jpg

I'm one of that type of people who are usually bought by sentimentality and this one also got to me.

Life Is Beautiful is about a Jewish family which is sent to concentration camp. The protagonist,Guido, stays together with his son Giosué,whereas his wife is sent to women block. It all looks like the same old story about the horror which prisoners have to face in the concentration camp but this movie is different.Guido doesn't want his son to know what is happening so he tells his boy that the whole camp is a game and if you win it you get a real tank. The boy doesn't understand what the German officers are saying all the time so he believes his father.

The drama and comedy mix is the key of the film.It is funny,it is sad and it will definitely touch your heart.Of course it's sentimental and unreal, but who cares? It's well-filmed,well-acted film full of honesty and magic.

There are lots of films who tell the tragic fate of concentration camp prisoners but it's such a nice feeling when someone recommends you a film about death camp and you expect torture, scream, terror and tears but instead you receive a magical and positive experience.

86. Vozvrashchenie / The Return

http://i50.tinypic.com/zkq0zq.jpg

This is a new movie for me,which I saw few months ago but it left an impression for me and even got a place in this list.

The plot is quite simple. Two young brothers,Andrey and Ivan, are living with their mother and grandma. One day they have an argument at the doorstep and mother suddenly tells them to be quiet because their father is sleeping.Everything seems normal, just the father hasn't been at home for 12 years.Father later offers two brothers to go on a fishing trip and they agree.

They key thing in this movie is the relationships between father and his sons.It may seem that father is very bossy and his attempts to educate his children are even brute but,on the other hand, maybe he is trying to prepare his kids for life?He is harsh because he wants his sons to be true men. This film raises a lot of questions such as why did the father come back? Why the brothers are afraid to ask where he has been,or even do the father loves them? But of course, you will get no answers which is actually a common thing in Russian cinema and I like that because it lets the viewer to make his own opinion.

The acting is great and seems very real (this may be because Russians are playing Russians,so they speak without accent and they understand the lifestyle).

Visually this film is also fabulous, although it is mostly dark and in more depressive scenes it's usually raining.

It's a great drama which goes deep into the family relationships and it makes you wonder whether you're relationships with other people are like you want them to be because they may become unimprovable anytime.

Yes,I've heard of him but I haven't seen anything because overall I'm not a big fan of Lithuanian cinema. For me it's too dark and depressive and it is actually very hard to find some films to watch.Of course, there are some great classic movies(I included one in my list) but most of them are not translated or subtitled in English.

I gave 10 for this movie in IMDB and it's the only movie where I gave high score in IMDB but low on this list.

I gave it a maximum because I think it's flawless. And I really believe that this movie has no disadvantages - acting is good, plot is consistent and clear, characters are characterized and maybe a bit cliche, villain is great, cinematography is fine and the "message" is unusual.

I think it got 85th place just because it's not very memorable for me.It didn't had that lasting effect on me.Yes,for few days, maybe even a month I constantly thought about it and it stuck with me but as the time passed I even forgot it and although it has a very interesting plot (this is important for me) I still don't feel a need to rewatch it.

http://i45.tinypic.com/il9c1d.jpg

I believe that none of you have seen this film as,to my knowledge,it's not translated or subtitled but I couldn't exclude it from my list because this is a classical Lithuanian film. It's like Citizen Kane for Americans and even now, after 50 years after it's release,it is still considered to be the best Lithuanian movie ever made.It is included in UNESCO's list of best films (although I can't find that list),and it won USSR State Prize.

I will give some background for this film.Lithuania was occupied by USSR in 1941 and 1944-1953 was the time of Lithuanian partisan movement against The Soviet Union. This film shows a life of a small village after WW2.People of the village have to choose whether to go along partisan movement or root for Soviets. It is the first film which talks about Lithuanian partisans.

This movie can be called a Soviet propaganda because it tries to makes us believe that partisans were bad. It's pro-soviet.Actually,it wouldn't be released if it wasn't.And even now,it has a lot of controversy but no one argues about how incredible it is.

The cinematography is perfect,it's black and white, the set is realistic and it has lots of meaningful pauses and camera movements. Also,it's a bit slow but I think it's more of a plus than a minus.

http://www.rusfilm.pitt.edu/2001/nobody.jpg

The acting was very good and this movie made a lot of actors known (like Donatas Banionis who later did a main part in Tarkovsky's Solyaris). This film is also a peak of director Vytautas Žalakevičius who is one of the best Lithuanian directors.

This movie also has some western details and it reminds me a bit of "Seven Samurai",I'm not sure who was influenced by who but I can see some similarities with Kurosawa's films.

I'm glad that my country has some masterpieces, too but it's a shame that some of them can't be shared with the world. :/

I can't say much about this film and why it's so good(I just liked it) but it was charming. When I saw it,it seemed unusual but not very special and memorable. However,it stayed in my mind for a long time and I think now that it is really an original movie with good cinematography and just incredible music.Maybe it's not very re-watchable but it's a mistake to miss it.

http://i46.tinypic.com/k9jsw9.png

I'm a huge fan of Quentin Tarantino and Tarantino likes Battle Royale,so I always thought that I will love this movie. But I never got myself to see it.Well, finally I did(that was a week ago),and I wasn't wrong - it was very good and climbed pretty high up my list.

The plot is simple - ninth-grade students are captured and forced to kill each other in a deserted island under the new "Battle Royale" act.Goal is to kill other students and be the only one alive.

It would be hard for me to stay objective because I just like such type of films. However,I was expecting it to be very gory but it wasn't.Actually, the "gore" level was perfect - it is quite bloody but it's in order to make the film feel real and not just to shock the viewers.Maybe I'm just ruined by violent films but didn't find it disturbing like some people do.

Of course,I've seen it only once and it took time until I could tell the difference between the characters (I find Chinese/Japanese similar-looking and names were difficult to remember) but I still enjoyed it,so just imagine how I will like it when I re-watch it and get everything straight. :D

I think the plot is intriguing and interesting, personally I couldn't guess who will "win" this "Battle Royale".I like consistent,non-jumpy movies, not too complicated and not too banal so this one hit the spot.

However, the ending didn't please me or maybe I didn't get it but I think it got too carried away but since the introduction and the whole film was capturing,it didn't ruin the movie.

It was the same with Disturbia - caught in on TV,didn't even know about it so I didn't expect to like it but ended up satisfied and entertained by this film.

This movie tells the story about Ugandan dictator Idi Amin and his physician.Movie takes place in the 70s.

It was a quality film - well made, beautifully shot and acting was decent.Forest Whitaker was perfect as Idi Amin - a childish, big yet cruel person. If you want to see a good acting performance - there it is.

I'm glad that it has some cruel and violent scenes, this makes the film more realistic.I love that this movie builds up - it starts happily and the dictator seems like a good person but everything ends tragic as we realize who actually our characters are - physician starts to understand who the dictator is and from being quite careless he becomes like a saviour for Ugandans. And Idi Amin, that nice, big guy turns out to be a heartless leader who is blinded by this ideas.

I never actually checked how accurate it is and the only thing which I missed in this movie was political context.

Watch it if you haven't,it's good. :)

You may not like Stanley Kubrick but you will remember his films as they usually provoke, shock or make you laugh. And Kubrick brings out all those emotions in an amazing cinematography and colorful characters.

However,A Clockwork Orange isn't his best work and it's quite controversial as well.A very disturbing and quite brutal film which is trying to send a message that something is very wrong in our society.

Alex is sent to prison after committing some horrible crimes but he volunteers to take part in a new government plan which should help to decrease the crime level.Of course, the plan goes wrong.

The costumes are quite strange, the language is mixed with Russian, the music seems a bit satirical, the plot is unusual and the content is uncomfortable. And although critics like this film very much,Clockwork Orange is not perfect.Still, something makes it extraordinary.

I think it's one of the most memorable films of Kubrick and you should see it because it's just a part of the art of cinema. For me,it feels uncomfortable to like such a disturbing film but it's probably the only movie where cruelty seems necessary.

74. Carrie

http://media-cache-ec5.pinterest.com/upload/151503974934471293_QV9qTORO_b.jpg

I am not a big horror fan and I prefer movies which contain more tension than actual horror. Also,I particularly like those movies which a creepy right from the beginning till the very end and this film falls under that category. :)

Carrie, which is a debut film of Brian De Palma,is about a girl,Carrie White. She is being picked on at school, she is thought to be weird and she has no friends.Well, and there's a reason for that - her mother is an absolute religious fanatic who doesn't let her daughter to do anything fun. However,Carrie has telekinesis,an ability to move objects with her mind, and she starts overusing that ability when her classmates push her too far.

I think that acting is one of the best things in this film.Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie give us great acting performances.Spacek helps the viewer to understand Carries' character and to realize that she is nice girl turned shy because of her mother who was portrayed by Laurie.I'm not so keen on Piper Lauries' performance but I can't deny that it's good and memorable.

Of course, the key scene in the film is the prom night and movie builds up and makes the viewer wait for the culmination which takes place at the prom.I will not spoil it but I don't think you will not be disappointed with that best scene of the film. It's really terrifying and intriguing.

I would also like to add, that it's not only about killing and horror,it has a lot of drama elements which makes it even more effective.

This movie doesn't get a lot of attention but it's one of the best Hitchcock's films for me,beating North By Northwest,The Birds and being equal to Vertigo. 72. Looper

http://i49.tinypic.com/34hc7d0.jpg

Had to rearrange my list a bit to sneak this film in. :)

I heard a lot of positive reviews about it and I already had a hunch that I will like it.Well, and I was not disappointed although maybe I expected something different.

It's 2074 when the time travel is already invented and outlawed. But the mob still uses time traveling to eliminate "present" people by sending them to the past. Those, who kill those people are called loopers. However, sometimes the looper has to kill his older self, which is called "closing your loop".And this movie is based on Joe's(Joseph Gordon-Levitt)failed attempt to kill his older self(Bruce Willis).

It may not be the best movie ever made and maybe it will be forgotten soon but there's no doubt that it's a great entertainment and more important,a quality film. There might be some plot holes, some too unrealistic material, old and young Joe may not look similar but,at least for me,it didn't matter. The whole time traveling thing was already too complicated for me,so I didn't try to understand all the details,I just enjoyed this film.

As I mentioned before,it's a quality film.Every aspect of the movie is fine and well-made.

Of course,I liked screenplay the most which was written by Rian Johnson(he directed the movie, too).A very unique and interesting idea and the plot is not complicated yet you have to stay concentrated.Characters are quite developed and the futuristic world makes sense.Do watch it.

I am fan of a few Guy Ritchie movies and this one isn't an exception. However, most of his crime movies are comedies and this one requires concentration and thinking during the view.Maybe that's the reason it was so disliked.People expected something different.

Movie is about a guy,Jake(Jason Statham),who is just released from prison after serving 7 years. He seeks revenge on Dorothy Macha (Ray Liotta) for putting him to prison.

Objectively,I would say that it's not a very professional movie.Plot is not consistent, quite jumpy and even hard to understand.Acting and dialogues seem odd but that's not because actors are bad but the movie itself is quite unique.Overall, this film seems a bit "off-road".

However,I love how clever it is.It's extremely hard to understand it.And one viewing is definitely not enough to realize what this film is actually about.Basically, the only reason why it came quite high on my list is that feeling when after viewing it 2nd or 3rd time I realized what it's about and all scenes started to make sense.I felt like I've discovered something new.And although now I don't feel very much the same towards this film,I still remember that strange feeling and "Revolver" is still is my mind.

Another thing about it's "message" is that it's not inspiring,it doesn't just question something but it also gives the answers."The greatest enemy will hide in the last place you would ever look" - this is said in the beginning of the film and in the end viewers are told where that place is.This is what like about it.

To conclude,if you want a visually stunning film or good crime story,I don't think that you would like this film. But if you're more interested in deep meaning in movies or messages it send, then try to watch it.But it's no Snatch or Lock,Stock,I'm warning you. :)

It is a Lithuanian film made in 2010 and directed by Emilis Velyvis and it's a sequel to the first Zero, although they are not related in plot.

It's hard to explain the plot and what it is about but it's a crime story full of twists and colorful characters.Like in Guy Richie's films. It also has some original dialogues and absurd situations.Like in Quentin Tarantino movies.

And basically, this is the biggest problem with the film. It's a copy.Although more people say it's more Tarantino style,I think it's more similar to Guy Ritchie, only in different level.Another "turn off" for me was explicit language. It may seem normal that crime movies usually has a ton of curse words but, believe me,in this film, there's just too much of it and therefore, the acting starts to look quite unrealistic. When I saw this movie,it had English subtitles,so I imagine that for those who don't speak Lithuanian, this movie was even worse because of it's language, because Lithuanian curses are quite inventive, taken from Russian,so it's difficult to translate them accurately.

However,it's a very entertaining film and it has pretty much everything what a black humor comedy needs - interesting characters, tricky plot, unusual situations,"dark" jokes and inventive dialogue(although I think that those failed). And even if it has similarities with previously mentioned directors,it's still fun if you're a fan of such films.

Another good thing is that this movie brought some innovations into Lithuanian cinema. My country's films tend to be dark, slow, sad and sometimes pointless so I'm very glad that Emilis Velyvis decided not to follow the traditions and just did something new.I'm always for original and new ideas, even if they're not very well-made so this film made me happy.

I would also like to mention that some people consider first part (Zero) to be better.I think that it's more interesting in plot but it's a bit undeveloped and not as good technically as the second one. Both are quite similar actually.

Check it out,if you into such films, entertainment outweighs all its little flaws.

Film is about a mental patient Prot(Kevin Spacey) and his psychiatrist(Jeff Bridges).Prot claims to be from the planet K-PAX and the doctor tries to understand that.

Another movie from the times when I was little, haven't seen it in ages but still included it here. This film is not liked by critics, probably because of it's uncertainty, but it bought me and I think that it's sad and even a bit magical experience.Music is exceptional. :)

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSwPqOC0gOlDrkH8GnSJd-U67KQIdzHAC0EkFIpe5fNdgLR-FLPvwF9Sjd0

I won't find the exact source now but one critic once mentioned that the best war films are Vietnam films. And there's even a top 3 for the best Vietnam War movies - Deer Hunter,Apocalypse Now and Platoon. While the first two deal with emotional crisis,Platoon also shows visually how war looks like.

I won't lie,I haven't seen Platoon in a while and I'm not sure if this film would make my personal top list but it is definitely one of the most memorable war films and I think it's one of the finest Oliver Stones films.

I think the best thing about this war drama is that it shows us how exactly war looks like. The final battle looks like a mess. You can't understand who is who, what is happening and who is winning.Sometimes you can't even tell the difference between Vietnamese and Americans. This thing makes the viewers to be next to the protagonists because they are lost just like we are.And I believe that this was the point of the film - to let us feel how the soldiers feel.

And of course,Platoon is not only visually well-made.It has great and bright characters,it has emotions and it has great music.

Even if isn't my favorite war film,I can't leave it behind since I think it's flawless.

I think it's the best movie that I've seen about 60s-70s culture or about hardships which bikers (or maybe all subcultures) had to face and I even think that this movie is best not for it's goodness as a movie but it just has some kind of a historical heritage in it.

62. Avatar

http://i45.tinypic.com/315e6no.jpg

A big hit in 2009,full of captivating special effects about the planet Pandora and people from Earth trying to take over it by killing the natives.

I noticed that basically people either loved or hated this film.Loved because of it's stunning special affects and hated it because it was cliché and sentimental at times.Maybe even stupid.I can agree on both sides.

The main thing is,that,I believe,Avatar didn't even intend to be a complex sci-fi flick about the meaning of life.James Cameron, the director of the movie, wanted to show how incredible a film might look. And he proved that. You can say whatever you want about the plot, characters, logic level but you can't deny that it is one of the most beautiful films.I'm not very keen on sci-fi and movie technologies but I read that Avatar brought some innovations into special effect cinema and that is something. Also, imagine if this was a complicated film, full of metaphors - would you have time to enjoy it?To actually notice how beautiful it is?There's a reason why such films are called special effect films - it means that mostly you have to pain attention to the special effects.

Of course,on the other hand,it is cliché.It lasts 3 hours but I knew how it will end in the first 45 minutes. The dialogues were unoriginal, the "sad" scenes were sentimental, the love story was very banal, characters were very predictable.

I also think it needed to give more "background".Since it's a sci-fi film,it is presenting a new world which need more explanation to let the viewer adapt easier.

Despite script flaws it is a very enjoyable film.I like to compare it with LOTR - both stunning visually but LOTR has that background which I mentioned before and it is more clever. That's what makes Avatar less good. But it's not a fail either. If you're a fan of beautiful and entertaining films, you'll like it.But don't expect anything if you are only searching for something very deep and emotional.

Guaporense

I though Avatar was quite good but not a masterpiece of cinema. I rate it as 7/10, much weaker than Terminator, T2 and Aliens, the three best films Cameron directed.

The main problem was the completely standard plot which reduced tension since I knew exactly what was going to happen. James Cameron implemented a standardized plot in the movie because it was a very expensive film (total production and distribution costs were of 550 million dollars) and hence he sought to minimize risks involved into making this film, so making the most conventional film plot possible was a way to prevent the film from having any chance of flooping, since the conventional way of making films is the way that evolved over the past 100 years that is sure to entertain the largest number of people.

Though film buffs with a more refined taste for films will not like Avatar that much because it its incredibly conventional structure.

A Swedish film about a 16 year old Russian/Ukrainian girl who, because of her naiveness, gets involved in an illegal business. It is based on Lithuanian girl story.

It's not the most beautiful film visually but ,even if it's not special,it's a good drama.I liked most the whole setting and the lifestyle which is portrayed very well. This film looks very realistic not only in recreating Soviet Union "spirit" but in dialogues, music, values, view of life and relationships. If you're from a second world country,I believe that it will look very familiar.

Despite the fact that it cheats a bit and uses film to preach and show social problems,it is a heart-wrenching drama about two lost souls.

57. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

http://i48.tinypic.com/1zfne2s.jpg

A great and captivating espionage drama based on one of the best spy writers,John Le Carre's novel.I also heard some rumors that this film was made in order to win some acting Oscars and even if it was,it still has a great cinematography, plot and cast.

The only bad thing about this film is that it is very difficult not to "lose plot".Story is quite complicated and events are going fast so I would suggest not to judge it from the first viewing. You should watch it a couple of times. But despite that,it is a good story, full of twists, interesting dialogues and I love that this film right from the beginning tells that there's a bad guy inside so you can try to figure out who it is,since it is only revealed in the end.

The cast is wonderful, too but that is subjective opinion because I'm a fan of Gary Oldman,Colin Firth and Mark Strong.I also enjoyed Tom Hardy's acting,so trust me,if you are a fan of those actors, this movie will be a great enjoyment for you.

Also,I loved how spectacular this film looks, the cold war era is done perfectly,I love the lights, the music, the colors - everything was so subtle and memorable.I think it is one of those films where you can just enjoy the view. :D

I would recommend it for crime/espionage fans who like clever stories and good acting. However,it is a bit slow but I believe it's one of the best crime/espionage films in the past 5 years.

minor spoilers

This films tells a story about a young man(Leonardo Dicaprio) who seeks for adventures and he gets them when he receives a map to a mysterious island which is said to be a paradise on Earth.

There are three main things why this film is on my list: breathtaking landscape, gorgeous music and the idea of the film.I don't think that I need to explain why the scenery is great, you should see "The Beach" and I think you will understand me.The island looks so wonderful that it really makes the viewer think that if there is a paradise, then it must be here. And can there be better music for such a great view than Moby's Porcelain or All Saints's Pure Shores?

I also love that movie talks about freedom.About seeking adventures.About looking forward to them and in the end getting disappointed.Paradise cannot exist without other's sacrifices. It also shows people who are "civilization-free" but I disliked that idea and I think it made the movie worse.

I also enjoyed how this film turned from sweet adventure drama into a tense thriller.I think that's why it never got boring.

However, objectively,it is not considered to be a great film and I understand it's flaws.I think the worst thing was the idea about people living in the nature with no civilization. It went too far and maybe it wasn't even necessary. Also characters are very banal and uninteresting,so I didn't feel much for them. The love story also seemed stupid. Finally,it tries to show too much.I loved how Richard (protagonist) went crazy,I loved the weed-selling-criminals story involved but they made this film "heavier".It's better when movie takes one theme and tries to stick with it and explore it.

This is probably the only movie which I would love to see remade. With new technologies it could look even more spectacular, just leave the same music and the guy seeking experience, searching for paradise and peace in his mind.

54. Stalker

http://i43.tinypic.com/sv2n2q.jpg

Despite being not my type,I really enjoyed this film.Well, probably I won't watch it for entertainment but it has something what I like about films - that mesmerizing atmosphere which can be experienced only in films.

If you haven't seen this film,it's not about celebrity stalkers. It's about a place called The Zone and about a room in The Zone, which is believed to grant wishes. The place is prohibited to visit but Stalker is the man who can take you there.A scientist/teacher and a poet decide to go to The Zone using Stalker's help.

I think this is a film about hope.Maybe even naiveness. It's something like a trip to yourself in order to discover something.

At first, the whole Zone idea seemed very unrealistic for me but in the film, all the scenes which take place in Zone are colored and all scenes outside it are brown/white (sepia). This prompts the viewers that Zone (the dreamy, surreal, unreal, even dangerous place) may be more beautiful and bright but it is scary, dark and unexplored (sound effects improve that) and all scenes outside Zone (home, bar) are dull, boring but they are familiar, not creepy.Colors and sounds alone create all the mood and atmosphere in the film,so the usage of sound and color in this movie is just outstanding.

I noticed that quite a lot Russian films are just more warming. They get really deep into your emotions and they are just more honest. This one is not an exception.

The Mirror is not a movie to watch with your rational mind. The movie is structured like memories and not as a linear narrative, where each event follows a rational sequence after each other.

Solaris is a science fiction film with a linear story and narrative. It is more entertaining than Stalker and indeed it is the most accessible of the 6 films Tarkovsky did with creative control.

Andrei Rublev is a bit more exotic than Solaris and Stalker but not as much as avant garde as The Mirror, which is one of the most artistically sophisticated films ever made.

This is,no doubt, the most disturbing movie I've ever seen.If you think that films like Apocalypse Now,Deer Hunter,Platoon are anti-war,you should see this one.It wasn't entertaining and I don't think I will ever see it again.

Joe is an ordinary young man who has a normal life. But he wants to go to war since he believes that it is a manly thing to do.On the last day of WWI Joe gets hurt by a mortar shell.Very badly hurt.

Have you seen Metallica's "One" music video? If you want to get the idea what this film is about and how it looks like, that video probably is the best trailer.

Also, this is one of those films when we pity the character because he is physically hurt.I usually dislike such films since they use physical disability in order to make the viewer sad;I prefer when emotions (sadness,in this case) comes from the movie itself - cinematography, character drama, acting etc. But this film is one big exception. Not only this movie shows a tragic fate of a young man but it also creates this extremely depressive atmosphere. It's just full of melancholia.

If it is considered sentimental, then it definitely bought me.

I couldn't say that I'm a fan of anti-war movies. There was a time when I was hooked on war movies overall so then I watched a bunch of films related to war but those anti-war movies are pretty uncomfortable.I've seen Come And See,that was a disturbing film, too. But thank you for your recommendations,I'll know where to check when I need something like that. :)

Since there are only few hours left until New Year,I decided to add one more movie,so half list would be done. The next half will be finished in 2013.And since that other half of the list is better,I hope it will bring a better year too.Happy New Year to you all. :)

50. Dog Day Afternoon

Maybe it's only me,but I found this film absolutely hilarious. :D I mean,if you look how it starts and how it looks near the end,you can even think that it two different films.
Also,I am a fan Al Pacino and he was just perfect in this role, sadly that the same year Jack Nicholson did One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which was just phenomenal and deserved the oscar.I also loved John Cazale,he is a bit overlooked actor but I enjoyed pretty much all few films which I've seen from him.
If you think that you're having a bad day,you should watch this movie! :D

48. Saving Private Ryan

http://www.moviegoods.com/Assets/product_images/1010/133926.1010.A.jpg

It is not the most clever film about war but it is stunning visually. The whole battle scenes are just breathtaking.Spielberg can touch your heart and make you cry but he is more into how beautiful the films is,not how meaningful or rich in dialogues. So SPR is not an exception.Plot doesn't seem very realistic, sometimes sentimental but,for me,cinematography compensates everything. It is the most beautifully shot war film I've seen so far.

I believe that many of you have seen this film and I noticed that it is one of those few movies who are liked by film buffs as well as those people who watch mainstream films just for entertainment.

Another thing I also wondered is why this film is so depressing for everyone. Before I saw it,many people told me that Requiem For A Dream will do such an impact on me that I will never try drugs. But honestly,I wasn't moved and it wasn't as shocking as it is to some people.Sad - yes, but it didn't stick with me for long

I believe that the strongest thing in this film is the way it is filmed.Very interesting and unusual camera angles, quite unrealistic colors and overall, when I watch it,I get the impression that everything in the film is happening next to me.And of course, that great soundtrack which is actually now a bit boring and overused but when I heard it for the first time,it was amazing.I even learned it to play on piano. :D

I also used to dislike this film because I usually look skeptically at things which all people like but later I realized that this film is quite unique and there is a reason why it is praised.

46. Dead Poets Society

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/49/Dead_poets_society.jpg/220px-Dead_poets_society.jpg

This is definitely the most inspiring film I've ever seen.

Story centers around a respective and strict boys school in which a new literature teacher comes and starts inspiring his students and encourages them to seize the day.

I'm usually not into sentimental films and this film isn't very well filmed nor it has a great cinematography. But it is so honest and positive. This is one of those films where I just relax and let the movie draw me into the story.I don't judge it,I don't look for flaws,I just enjoy it.

I also love Robin Williams in this film,he seems so natural and, although he often plays such an inspiring roles, this one still stands out for me.I also liked Robert Sean Leonard's acting performance(you might know whim from House M.D),he was probably the most intriguing character. It is also sweet to see this actor so young. :)

I believe that those who will watch it sceptically might not like it but if you just let the movie into you,it will be a great experience and Dead Poets Society really might inspire you.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d8/Once_Upon_A_Time_In_America1.jpg

A very very good gangster drama film which I can easily put in one shelf with The Godfather or Goodfellas.Sergio Leone directed this film and ,personally,I think it is as good as his most famous work "The Good,The Bad and The Ugly".However,Once Upon A Time In America doesn't seem to be very popular maybe because it is a long film (nearly four hours) but long films are usually better than the short ones because they explore the characters more, they give more background and they really draw you into the story. This masterpiece is not an exception and if you like gangster films,I would strongly recommend it.

Quite overlooked Scorsese film about Howard Hughes who had one of the most unique and interesting personalities.

I think the film portrays everything very well.I like that "The Aviator" is fast but not too fast.I like that it is mostly about one character(reminds me of Taxi Driver or Raging Bull),and the 20s-40s are recreated just perfectly.Acting is pleasing, screenplay as well as directing are top-notch.The crash scene looks awesome - very realistic and very well-made.

Until it won Best Picture at the Oscars,I didn't know much about the film. However,I was surprised that it won against Inception which was,in my opinion, overpraised,so I watched it.And I was really pleased.
I will not lie and I think that it is not a very entertaining or a re-watchable film but I don't think that anyone can deny its technical greatness or character development. The era is perfectly set,the cinematography it fine,I especially like the colors and music in it.Maybe the characters are a bit predictable and cliche but the lead character,King George VI,was astonishing and since it's a film based on a person,it did really well.I was very pleased with the acting and now it's one of my favorite acting performances but I also have to give credit to the writers for developing the main character so well.
I love the final speech scene in the film,it's one of my favorite scenes and endings.
Since I enjoy sad but not sentimental dramas which centers around one character, I really adore this film.

36. Watchmen

http://i46.tinypic.com/2ps3yqa.jpg

I noticed that people usually either love it or hate it and I am on the fans side.

It's a superhero film but I consider it to be quite untraditional. The movie is set in 1985,excluding one superhero, all of them are just ordinary people(yes, there are multiple world-saving heroes) and you can't actually call them good guys. Moreover,I wouldn't say that it's a film about saving the world,it's more about "why should we save it?".

So,of course, with multiple characters, complex plot, and original idea about whether the world is worth to be saved, this film is a challenge since it's not a one person drama - it's about everyone.I believe,it's obvious that it is extremely hard to direct such a film and I think that Zack Snyder did it well. There are some flaws - plot is a bit messy and cinematography, although unique,is not my type. But music, few characters, quite fast plot and that dark and hopeless world was enough to make the film not only entertaining but also with some meaning.

To conclude,I think it's that originality that made me like it.Objectively,it's not perfect but personally,it is one of the best superhero movies I've ever seen.I'm not sure if I should recommend it - it is for certain tastes.

Btw,I just love the funeral scene there "The Sound of Silence" plays.

35. Death Proof

http://i46.tinypic.com/339ox8y.jpg

Some people say it's the weakest Tarantino film, some say it's good but I personally love it.There will be more of his movies on the list but that doesn't mean that Death Proof is the least liked.

I can't exactly tell why QT is my favorite director as I love everything about his films: plot, characters, acting, dialogues, music, cinematography, violence etc.I like that most of his films have a lot of elegance mixed with blood and violence. The first thing I fell in love with in QT films(when I saw my first QT film Kill Bill) was the dialogues. They are so amusing, interesting and just... pointless to the film. That's what makes them so special. It makes the atmosphere more realistic. Also, some QT films feature some kind of a retro or 60s,70s style which I love, too. Finally, his films also have more interesting female characters and QT also never saves his characters,so you never know who might be killed. :D Everything combined makes Quentin Tarantino one of the most original and entertaining directors working nowadays and he is the only director which all films I've enjoyed more or less.

And I like Death Proof for all the same reasons. It's about a stuntman who enjoys killing women with his "death-proof" car and the movie is divided like into two segments but as I kept seeing more Tarantino,I noticed that, actually, the plot doesn't matter. No matter how stupid the story seems at first,I end up enjoying the film. It's not the story that matters with Tarantino,it's the way he tells it.

A director who's just gotten worse and worse, IMO. Actually, maybe that's not the case. Maybe he's just become more and more indulgent. Either way, I'm pretty bored with him now, to the point that I had no interest in IB (which I eventually saw last year and thought was dull) and I don't know that I'll be seeing Django for some time, either.

Despite all that, I really liked Death Proof. Easily the most enjoyable film he'd made since Jackie Brown, which really does seem like a very long time ago now. I know he couldn't care less, but I'd love him to start making films I, at least, want to see. When you watch those first three films, it's almost heartbreaking to see what's followed. If I could get him to do one thing, it'd be to bring his next film in at, say, 90 minutes? Two hours, tops. I'm sure that I'd have enjoyed Kill Bill and IB a lot more had they been so much tighter.

Gabrielle947
01-24-13, 04:18 PM
Hm,I've noticed that there are some QT fans who don't like his newer work as much they like the classic ones and they give pretty much the same reasons as you do but I'm not with them.Maybe it's because I haven't had enough of him and I rewatch his films quite rarely,it's like a treat. :D
And I don't have Tarantino 'madness' , I haven't seen his latest film yet but I really never understood this "he gets boring" thing because from Reservoir Dogs to IB he seems the same to me,just with better special effects as the time goes on.What exactly is wrong with his latest films?

honeykid
01-24-13, 05:53 PM
They're flabby, overly long and self-indulgent. I'd also say that the dialogue in IB completely lacks the crackle and vibrancy of any of his other work. Not including Django, as I've not seen it.

The other problem I have with Kill Bill and IB is that I really care for the 'source' material. I quite liked Lady Snowblood and Lone Wolf And Cub, but Martial Arts and war films aren't genres that I like, neither are Westerns, which is the main reason I don't care for Django. Well, that and the fact that I don't like the original Django films, either. I'd rather watch Inglorious Bastards than Inglorious Basterds.

What exactly is it that makes him indulgent?

cricket
01-24-13, 11:23 PM
I feel that Tarantino is just trying to be a bit too cool and cute sometimes, and the results are occasionally silly. His first 3 films were more realistic, gritty films. Deathproof was very enjoyable to me because I wasn't expecting a serious film. But the Kill Bills, IG, and I suspect Django come off as parody a bit to me. Personally, I like crime films more than fantasy, and that's the difference for me in those films. I still think he is an incredible director, and I want to see everything he does. But I'd like to see him be less of a fan, and more of a director. Honeykid will be able to explain this better.

Cobpyth
01-25-13, 06:47 AM
I really like the style of his later films. They may be different from his earlier movies (he certainly has a bigger budget nowadays) and completely unrealistic, but that's what I like so much about them. Of course I can understand that some people don't want him to change and want his Reservoir Dogs-Jackie Brown period back, because they liked those movies so much (so did I), but I don't see why that would be necessary. He has moved on and he clearly wants to make different movies than he did in the beginning of his career, so why can't he? I personally think the results are great!

Of course this is all about opinions. We can discuss this topic for ages and still disagree.

honeykid
01-25-13, 08:45 AM
He has moved on and he clearly wants to make different movies than he did in the beginning of his career, so why can't he?
But he hasn't moved on. He's still making fanboy genre films, it's just that now he's doing so without restraint, hence a 165 minute spaghetti western, an 153 minute war exploitation film and a 248 minute martial arts film. IMO, Kill Bill's extraordinary running time is soley down to Tarantino's unwillingness to edit down what's known as Vol 1. I really should watch Kill Bill again, but in my mind it seems like two distinct films. Vol 1 is the compilation of all the films of that genre that Tarantino watched and loved, while Vol 2 is the Tarantino made genre film influenced by those films. Again, I've not seen either for about 9 or 10 years, but I remember liking Vol 2 a lot more as it felt like a Tarantino film.

Now, I thought that Jackie Brown was a bit indulgent, but the 15-20 minutes of trimming that film could use pales into insignifcance compared to what's followed. I'd also like to make the point that, whilst I've highlighted the running times of previous films, the running time isn't the problem. It's their need, IMO, of editing.

Pulp Fiction is the same length as Jackie Brown, however, it all feels as if it needs to be there. There's things I don't like, pretty much the whole Gold Watch section could go for all I care, but it needs to be there to tell the story and it doesn't mess with the pace of the film and, while some of the scenes feel as if they run on a little long, it's not anything that you really notice the first dozen or so viewings.

I'd just like to see him reeled in a bit. Tell a story that needs 90-100 minutes to tell it and tell it in that time. Not in 140. This isn't just Tarantino's problem, I feel this applies to Hollywood in general, but because of his circumstances, Tarantino can, and does, take it to the extreme.

If I thought there was meat enough in the stories, I'd suggest a move to tv.

Mingusings
01-25-13, 08:58 AM
I definitely agree that he is a big film fan and he clearly makes movies that are inspired by other movies. And I think this causes some of his movies to come off as parodies. For example, although 1970s kung fu movies were supposed to be awesome when they came out, they are pretty silly for a modern audience now. Quentin grew up watching those movies, so he tried to make one (Kill Bill). And I'm not exactly sure which scenes in Kill Bill come off as a parody to you, but I think Quentin put those 70s kung fu moments into a 2003 film, and the result is that it comes off as silly or a parody. In other words, I think that modern audiences would think that every Shaw Brothers kung fu movie is a parody. Tarantino makes Kill Bill which is highly influenced by the Shaw Brothers movies, and the result is that Kill Bill comes off as a parody.

Hope that made sense.

This is the best music movie I've seen and it's one of the few surreal films which I actually enjoy.

In 1979 Pink Floyd released one its best albums "The Wall".Guess it wasn't enough and that's why in 1982 the movie was released, too.

Basically it tells the story about a singer Pink. There are thoughts that it is based on Roger Waters biography but it's not necessary to know about him in order to enjoy this film.

I love the idea of the film which is to show how people build all kinds of psychological walls around themselves and how those wall isolate them from the society. The movie is dark, features a lot of dark colors and creepy animation. And of course,"The Wall" album music. It is surreal but I like that you can understand what it is about.Yet,you can't understand every detail so it's good to rewatch it as every time you can find something new. It's hard sometimes to follow the plot since half of it is fantasy and another half is real. But I like that you don't have to get the plot in order to get the film.

I would recommend it because I'm not into surreal or "mid*uck" films but I still found it interesting and well-made.However,you should listen to the album and do a little research - it would help to get the idea of the film.

This is one of my favorite scenes from the film.In the beginning,I believe, the flowers symbolize relationships between men and women and later you can see how the "wall" destroys the church(I think it symbolizes basic values),how good things(flowers) turn to unpleasant things(barbwire) when that psychological wall(isolation) surrounds you.And overall, the scene shows our endlessly consuming society.

32. Bonnie And Clyde (1967)

http://i49.tinypic.com/219qd6f.jpg

No wonder that in the 70's-90's lots of good crime movies were made.Half of them were influenced by this biography crime classic about one of the most notorious criminal couples.

This film seems so modern and it's hard to believe that it was made in the 60's.It also introduced violence in the cinema(famours scene when a police officer gets shot in the face at a close range). But of course, the final scene is the most memorable as it's not only dramatic but masterfully shot as well.I would recommend it,it is one of my favorite pre-70's films.

I just saw this for the first time recently and really thought highly of it. It will definitely be moving into my list. It was a small role but I also got a kick from seeing Gene Wilder in a movie like this, and Gene Hackman is one of my favorite actors.

Maybe "The Artist" won the Academy Award but this movie is so much better for me.I'm comparing them because it was directed by Michael Hazanavicius and the same 2 lead actors, who are in The Artist, are in this film, too.

This is a great spy parody film which features beautiful locations(Cairo,in the sequel it's Rio),beautiful women, tough James Bond type spy and lots of silly goons.Maybe its humor isn't as clever as Dr.Strangelove or Monty Python but for me it's hilarous and very stylish. It's also one of my recent discoveries and I have rewatched it a couple of times already. The sequal is good, too but I find the first movie much much better.

It reminds me a bit of No One Lives Forever computer game franchise, which is my favorite game of all time,so maybe it's a bit of nostalgia because seriously, this film is flawless. :D

Just after a French espionage film parody,I placed higher a French espionage drama. :)

I haven't seen much espionage films and always thought that most of those films are quite unrealistic (that's probably the influence of Bond franchise) but I loved this French crime/espionage film about the French Resistance during German occupation(WW2) as I found it very realistic, quite dramatic yet quite complicated plot-wise.It may be a bit slow for some viewers, but real espionage isn't full of action either.

This film reminds me so much of my childhood.I remember when my parents bought this film and since it was one of my first DVD's I used to watch it at least once or twice a day. :D Then, there was about 6-8 year gap and so I rewatched it few months ago and I still remember most of the dialogue, plot, scenes.

This is a German crime/comedy about two absolutely different guys who discover that they have fatal disease. They are put in the same hospital room and when they realize that their days are counted, instead of crying, they decide to fulfill their dream - to see the ocean for the first time.

Seems like a banal drama film but the fun starts when they rob a bank and steal mob boss' car which already has plenty of money. So both police and gangsters are pursuing them.

When I re-watched it,I tried to look at it objective and the humor didn't seem as funny as it used to be but I still adored this film for other reasons.Plot is quite twisted,at some times unrealistic and yet this film seems so interesting, honest and in some scenes really very sad. Also,I like the cast in the film which is quite unknown except for Til Schweiger who became quite famous after Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds. Finally,I would like to mention music which is just so...90s. :D

I wonder if anyone in this forum has seen this film? It's quite mainstream and probably it wouldn't please sophisticated movie watchers it's my childhood classic. :)

This is one of my favorite war movies, where not thewar field is important, but the personalities who begin wars. This time it's Hitler and the last days of his rule.

For me,it's a great trip back to 1945,I like that the original language of the film is German as it gives more realistic film. It's not propaganda which is also important to me.Moreover,it's well-shot,I like the location and time recreation but I think the best thing is the script and character drama, which is not only exciting but also real.

I was never a big fan of classic films.I haven't seen all the best classics but there is a fair share which I managed to watch. However, there is only a few films which I liked.I don't know what it is with Golden Age films that I don't like - maybe it's because I find them banal, maybe I don't see their technical greatness but most of the classics (I'm talking pre-60s) were boring and I watched them only for educational purposes.

Anyway, GWTW is probably the only exception because I absolutely loved it.I think the best thing about this masterpiece is the screenplay, the characters and directing. The interesting thing is,that the 4 hour length actually helps to build the film - there is a great introduction, clearly visible plot points, climax and the character development throughout the film.I love that this movie is simple but very powerful at the same time. It's also easy to notice that it set the example for nowadays and future films.

The whole pacing of the film is absolutely flawless with no extra scenes or unnecessary dialogues.Characters are influenced by either their depressing or cheerful experiences,we see how their values or view of life change and yet, everything in the film is flowing.I don't think that I need to mention that we feel for the characters since we are with them for 4 hours so we see them in their brightest and darkest moments.

When I read the summary,I thought that it would be an ordinary love story involving war,so my expectations were low.Now I can easily say that it takes a great director to make such an astonishing film out of quite simple story.Of course, the book is considered to be great so that's a good head start but rarely do films can compete with the pieces of literature.Gone With The Wind can.

Of course, the technical achievements and the impact on the film industry is even out of question.8 Academy Awards, highest grossing Golden Era film, first major movie in color.Gone With The Wind speaks for itself.

I hope you'll grow to love more older films as you get older, but that's a good one with which to start. :) As far as "major" first color films go, The Wizard of Oz beat it by four months, but there are many others dating back to silent days, but maybe you don't consider those major.

Maybe I will, now it is hard for me to understand greatness of some films. :) Besides GWTW and Rear Window,I liked Psycho and Bonnie & Clyde which were released 60s+ but I still consider them classic films.Long time ago,I saw Fahrenheit 451 and I enjoyed it,too. But that's pretty much all. :D

I knew that it was one of the first color films so considering high grossing and the fact that it's the first movie in color to win an Oscar for Best Picture,it is one of the first major films in color. But yeah,my mistake,I totally forgot The Wizard Of Oz. :/

There are even Indian movies in color predating it:

Kisan Kanya

from 1937!

Though, Gone With the Wind might be the first color film to score 100 million admissions. Well, there were 3-4 films in US history which scored more than 100 million admissions, I think.

Actually, I was wrong, because Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came two years earlier than Gone With the Wind and was in color and scored 120 million admissions!

As you can see from my top 10, I bloody love this film. As someone who's forever bemoaning that these days every film has to be, at least 2 hours long, regardless of how whether the story can be told in 90 minutes or not, the 4 hour running time is needed, improves the film and flies by.

One reason why I like it,it's because Tony Montana is the best villain I've seen so far and personally, this is my favorite Pacino acting performance. He really made me hate the character.I don't know what is the history with this film, why Pacino wasn't nominated and why this film is quite disliked by people but I would put it next to Goodfellas or Godfather.

Also, this is the only film I've seen where I dislike the characters.I don't feel for any of them and I think all the main roles are horrible people. :D Usually in our favorites we sympathize with the characters and so do I but this differs and maybe that is why it is so special.

I'm a big advocate of Scarface. This was really hated and slated when it was released. Then it found a following in the late 80's and, by the mid/late 90's, seemed to be a real favourite with many. Since then, the backlash has begun.

As I've said many times, forget Wall Street, this is the film that defined the 80's.

glad you like it,now something non-crime :) I would also like to mention that starting from 22,I give a maximum 10/10 to all of the following films, which means that either they are flawless or I absolutely loved them despite their minor flaws.

22. Schindler's List

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRZEn61U7nHDZ_4Y9JeJQSlDPUQ0kwqzziCXlHhkuYPVOl1P5xv

It is not my favorite Spielberg film but it is definitely the most well-made.Now it doesn't get much attention but I have a strong feeling that it will become a timeless classic.

From my experience of watching war/drama films I noticed that the best films are those who manage to blend historical facts and character drama.A good movie needs a background as well as it needs a good story and Schindler's List provides both.

This films tells a story about Jews who are persecuted by Nazis during WW2 and it also presents Oscar Schindler - a man who saved the Jews.

The films is black & white and,I believe,it serves the purpose to make those dark WWII times look even darker and duller. The soundtrack alone is amazing and since it is a film,in which character survives a drastic personality change,it is long.

So with all this,we are not only reminded about the horrors of the WWII as a whole but also we receive the story of one businessman who gets mixed up in this worldwide battle. If I have to sum up why this film made the list, the main reason would be that it manages to tell the story in all aspects and wrap it in some beautiful shots.

If you have seen some of Spielberg's work, you can easily notice that he can create a heart-wrenching story and he certainly knows how to make the viewer burst in tears. However, sometimes it may turn to sentimentality. For example,I think that the famous red coat scene wasn't necessary as I felt a bit manipulated.I believe that the saddest films are those who just give the facts and make you realize for yourself how sad they are.But anyway, these minor sentiments does not hurt the film but I think that they're not needed.

When I saw Shindler's List on TV for the first time,I didn't even like it.When I rewatched it without any interferences and in original language,I was extremely impressed and now it is one of the most realistic and sad WWII dramas I've seen so far.Guess that means that it isn't a simple movie just for entertainment. It is a masterpiece and I believe that movie fans must see it.

For the end,there's a soundtrack,which I'm definitely learning on piano. :)
