21. Harry Potter

I'm 18,which means that I grew up with a Harry Potter so I get to like it. :D
Anyway, this franchise is amazing for me and despite plot holes, which fantasy fans always find,I could watch any HP movie anytime. But it's not only childhood nostalgia - these films creates such a beautiful world of good and magic that I, personally, can not resist it.Maybe it doesn't take on artistic camera angles or it doesn't use unusual colors, but it is a treat for,at least,my eyes.

My favorites:
Prisoner Of Azkaban - I think it's most well-made and the peak of HP movies.
Deathly Hallows Part 2 - not sure if this was really good or I love it because it's the end. Also the DH Part 1 was so bad that maybe automatically any film after it seems good. :D
Chamber Of Secrets - one of my first dvd's,which I got in childhood so I've seen it probably 20 times. :D

Maybe this franchise is banal, uninteresting, illogical and not as beautiful as LOTR but,for me,cinema would be a bit more dull without it.

I enjoyed watching the Harry Potter films but I wouldn't say any of them is a 5 film, for me at least. They were good, enjoyable popcorn movies but I didn't sense sublimity when I watched them, which is a must for a movie to enter in my personal top 100.

I have to kind of agree here. Although I did find the HP series an enjoyable experience, non of them I found particularly 'great', except for The Prisoner of Azkaban which I believe is by far the best, much darker and worked more as a separate film than the others, I enjoyed Oldman's character and would possibly give it a 4.5.

Well,I gave a maximum on IMDB for the last part only, the other parts vary from 7-9.Anyway,I don't like to split franchises and rate each film individually,so overall I give it a maximum. As I mentioned,I give maximum if I think objectively that the film is flawless or if I personally just love it despite some visible flaws and HP falls under the latter category. :)

20. Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Barrels

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQAku5_Bn0-IY7QpF0UkkI1MSvN1MAZOM24dUzAd_WiwZiqRi9LMw

Very similar to Snatch.,Lock Stock remains better for me and I think it is the best Guy Ritchie film so far.

For those who are not familiar,it's a very twisted crime story with guns, criminals, cards and British and all this is wrapped in large amount of British humor. :D It's purely an entertainments but for me it's a good one.

I love the humor, the dialogues, the music, some particular scenes, actors, plot - basically,I don't see any flaws in it.Also, the last scene is soo intriguing. :) I would strongly recommend it for crime and entertainment fans.

It's time to discuss my feelings towards Coen brothers. :)
I always thought that I will love their films as they always seemed my type. However,I never liked them and I couldn't even explained why.The biggest try was with No Country For Old Men which I have seen 3 times now and I still don't like it.On the other hand,I've never seen it in original language (watched it on TV) so maybe that is the reason.I didn't like A Serious Man,True Grit,Miller's Crossing,O Brother,Where Art Thou?
I didn't like The Big Lebowski at first, too but it grew on me yet still I can't like it as much as I would like to.I enjoyed Fargo but I never felt any desire to rewatch it.

But I instantly fell in love with Burn After Reading. It's not even considered to be one of the good Coen films so I have a feeling that my decision will be disliked since I put BAR higher then Lebowski in my list and No Country isn't even on the list.

Basically,I loved everything about this film, even George Clooney, whom I generally dislike. It's such a great comedy which,in my view, tries to reflect society's obssesion with conspiracies and it is filled with absurd situations as well as funny characters. All characters seem so lost and yet they think that they know what they're doing. :D

I would also like to praise Brad Pitt whose both character and acting was amazing,I loved it,it's probably my favorite Pitt's acting performance so far.It was sooo hilarous and realistic.

To sum up,for me it's one of my favorite entertaining films filled with enjoyable and well-acted characters, great twisted plot and lots of laughs.

I enjoyed all the Indiana Jones films (yes,I liked the last one, too) but I decided to include only this one as it is the most memorable.I love "quest" films which include some history, action and humor so this is a true gem for me.My favorite of Spielberg, too.

I think there's no point to explain why this fantasy masterpiece made my list.I am not even a big fan of fantasy but when I saw LOTR for the first time,I never even imagined that film can be that beautiful.Battle at Helm's Deep is the the most beautiful special effects thing I've seen so far.The trilogy made me realize that if a film is really good, you'll like it even if you're not a fan of the genre.

I believe that Lord Of The Rings Trilogy is the best fantasy film franchise ever made and I see no flaws in it.Fantasy films sometimes doesn't present the "new" world properly but LOTR did with its great introduction an almost 12 hour duration. Some of them are badly made but LOTR's special effects are smply stunning .Some of fantasy movies lack emotionality but LOTR does not even if it explores basic values such as friendship, loyalty, bravery etc.So even it isn't about the meaning of life and it doesn't require to think much,it still seems so lively, teaching and captivating.Mainstream audiences will love as well as sophisticated movie fans will find lots of things which they'll enjoy. It's a modern classic,I can't imagine what kind of fantasy film could top it.

LOTR and Indiana Jones are awesome Adventure/fantasy franchises, by the way! Personally I prefer Indiana Jones, because of its faster pace, but LOTR is an epic saga that also deserves a lot of respect.

16. The Wrestler

Randy 'The Ram' Robinson: The only place I get hurt is out there.
[Randy points away from the ring]

The quote above basically sums up the film which tells a story about an old wrestler Randy The Ram(Mickey Rourke) whose all life is the wrestling ring. This is the story of what happens when you cannot do what you love or like the most, when you're no longer good enough or when the time is just ahead of you.The same happens with The Ram when the new generation "arrives" and he is no longer fit for the ring because of his health problems.

This film is extremely sad mainly because it is about a tragic character which is not only alone but also doesn't fit anywhere. He is under extremely difficult circumstances and no matter what he chooses to do,he will never be happy as he can only wrestle but the time took away Randy's strength.Nobody understands the main character, even his daughter whom he abandoned in order to pursue wrestling career. Can you blame him?

Mickey Rourke's performance gives more emotion to the character. The acting is extremely good and heart-wrenching,one of my favorites and probably the best in Rourke's filmography.I've read that he used to be a wrestler,so it's natural that he felt comfortable in the role.On the other hand, many people get so focused about the acting that they forgot about the movie itself.

Despite utter loneliness which our character face,in his mind he is still living in his fame time which was during the 80s,so it's heart-wrenching to see him stagnant and unable to find another meaning in life.I love the ending of this film, you can call it both happy and unhappy.

I've heard some rumors that Black Swan and The Wrestler was supposed to be one film as their themes are quite the same - obsession and perfection towards your career, loneliness, isolation from the society and fatal consequences.Yet,Black Swan is more elegant and psychological whereas The Wrestler is raw,sad and real. That's what makes me love it.

14. Apocalypse Now

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSg5XwuNSHXA8zyQ7xc3vTYT7hJFzrsgpJK-hkU4IU56AfxD37D

Have you seen such a great introduction?I haven't.I love that 4 minute intro scene, where Captain Willard lies in his bed and just stares at the ceiling. What about that breathtaking moment, when trees catch fire as The Doors sings "This is the end"?Basically that intro scene alone could serve as a short film as it tells a lot about war.Where's destruction, chaos - there's an end of values, happiness, even life. The best thing is that it is only the beginning of this film.

Apocalypse Now has great dialogues, interesting plot, both action and more emotional scenes, there is humor, horror, absurd - basically everything what occurs in war.Another thing is that it is filmed soo well.Helicopter attack is probably one of the most spectacular scenes I've seen in a war film and considering that the film was shot in the 70s it seems even more great.I watched a documentary about it and F.F. Coppola faced a lot of difficulties while filming,so it's just amazing that he still managed to make such a great war drama.

As for which version is better,I'm not sure.Redux has more scenes, which give more information and makes it easier for the viewer to enjoy this film but if you can easily understand films,I'd recommend the original version.I think Redux version neither helps nor harms the film.

Another good thing which I like about the film is that it builds up.Right from the beginning,we are told what is the purpose of our characters and all the film they are slowly going towards their goal (to eliminate col. Kurtz). The main character constantly analyses him in his mind when the whole team goes deeper in to the jungle and as the films progresses we get to know more and more about the main villain so it was interesting to wait for the end and, of course, you should understand that when it finally arrives,it's so exciting!

However, this "build-up" has its disadvantages and one of them is the ending which I expected to be just flawless and sadly,I was disappointed a bit.I wouldn't say that it is bad now but I think it's definitely not as good as the rest of the film. When I saw the documentary,it was said that Marlon Brando wasn't ready for his role,he insisted on being filmed in the shadows so it's understandable. Moreover,I couldn't even tell what kind of an ending would satisfy me.When I saw AN for the first time,I disliked the end,the second time I felt nothing about it,now I just got used to it.I would like a better finish but that doesn't make the film worse.

As for the acting,I was pleased with all the main roles, couldn't say that they are special but they're certainly not bad.I didn't recognize Laurence Fishburne and only after the second view,I realized that it's Robert Duvall who says that famous napalm quote. :D Loved his short appearance in the film.

It's one of the greatest war films I've seen and it certainly deserved its praise.

Enjoy

I had some problems with the list,so I had to split them, normally I would rate them as one.

Now,first time I saw Kill Bill Vol 1 (I saw Vol 2 much later) was when I was about 11.Even then, after the film I though "this had some great scenes and dialogues" but I won't hide that I found it disturbing.

I think that this dualogy shows best what Tarantino is and what kind of films he makes.Basically everyone can like Pulp Fiction which is fun and stylish but I think only those who can take Tarantino's style will enjoy blood spilling, hand and head cutting, eastern culture, snakes, bride with a sword, countless amount of deaths, anime scenes and other not so usual things.

Anyway, what makes people hate this films, makes me love it.

Probably many of you have already seen this great story set in early 20th century about an oilman and his huge lust for power.I think this epic drama is a modern masterpiece as it is not only well-shot and acted but also captivating, fast and very well written.

There are lots of reasons what made me like it but the first thing which caught my attention even before seeing the film was the idea of 19th-20th century America and oil business.I didn't know anything about that so this was the first reason why the film was so captivating. It's always interesting to not only observe a film but also learn something from it or see something what you normally would never witness with your eyes. It's also a great background for a greed and ambition story since those were the times of Gold Rushes and seeking American Dream in USA.

Another great feature of this film and actually of most P.T. Anderson films is the characters and their relationships.I'm really starting to like where this director goes with the character drama and how uniquely he presents it.Even if I don't understand what or why the characters doing something,I am still interested in their next move.

There Will Be Blood is no exception as there are two men who confront, hate but sometimes admire and respect each other. It's Daniel Plainview, the main character of the film who seeks fortune and wealth. He has no past,it is not explained who he is,where he came from but from the intro scenes we learn that he is a struggling as well as a determined man who after a fatal oil draining accident adopted a son of the worker who died.Plainview doesn't like people,he said that himself but he wants to be admired by them,so he seeks to be the best.As Plainview tries to reach his goals using words and money, another character,Eli Sunday tries to do it trough people by being the pastor of a local church. He seems very kind, maybe even lost and he looks kind, too but as the film keeps going, you can see that he is no better than Plainview maybe even worse and more complicated but nonetheless a sociopath. So basically, despite the plot, this film is all about these two men confronting each other and battling for influence or power.I loved these little mental games and some silent messages trough-out the film.I like that PTA rarely explains what the characters feel,it's much better to draw conclusions for yourself.

On the other hand, with the characters being so ruthless, there are some people who dislike this film and that is mostly because this movie is just emotionless and we can't actually feel for the characters as they are unsympathetic.Considering the plot, uncomfortable music, dark images, lifeless deserts, dirty oil and lack of love, this film really is cold but for me,it is exactly what makes it so good.

The cinematography, use of color and camera angles are all great, visually this films is stunning, music fits perfectly and the place which was chosen for filming is spectacular. No Country for Old Men was shot in the same area but for me,TWBB is much much more beautiful as it completely manages to draw the viewer in the 1900s world of greed and corruption. My favorite scene looks-wise is probably when the well burns which leads to HW's accident.

Finally, the acting does the final touch which makes this film so impressive.Although DDL was just stunning in this film,Paul Dano does a great job too considering that he had only a few days to prepare for his role. His character seems so weird yet creepy which I think was intended.

Those two great performances, filled with subtle dialogues, stunning shots, creepy music, character drama and dirty oil business makes this film a true modern masterpiece.I don't think that this film will be forgotten and I would strongly recommend it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

This is as high as horror will go on my list so this means that The Shining is my favorite and the best horror film I've seen so far.

I am not a fan of the horror genre,so I don't know much about it but one thing which I noticed is that the scariest film isn't necessarily the best one.I think that a true horror film has to have at least a tiny connection with reality, good acting and it doesn't have to be scary - it should be more creepy.Well, that's just my opinion and the only reason why I rarely watch horror is because I am afraid.Film is a relaxation for me,a thrill but I hate watching a movie and waiting for some psycho to quickly pop out as I may get a heart attack any second.

I also heard an interesting thing about fear factors in films.I don't remember the source but I read that the best horror films are those who use the least of things which are generally scary as in dark, blood, ugly faces, psychos, forests, saws, knifes etc. I mean,Psycho, besides creepy villain and darkness, has nothing what should scare you.Who could ever think that a scene where someone is taking a shower might be scary? So all that made me conclude that the best horror films are those who create horror, not those who uses already known methods.

And I think that The Shining has it all.The instant thing which caught my attention was that this film right from the start is creepy. Those wide shots of the road as the Torrance family is going to the hotel are already signaling that this is not going to be a pleasant film.Nowadays, many films at the beginning look like comedies or pathetic dramas.

As I mentioned earlier about the reality in horror, there is some in this Kubrick masterpiece.I love the idea of Jack Torrance going crazy in an abandoned and huge hotel because it seems real,it's something that really can happen. Therefore, the viewers feel more connected and scared.

Also,The Shining is a creepy film. It's not even scary because honestly, nothing very frightening happens(unlike, for example,The Grudge Japanese boy always appearing when you are not expecting,I just hate that) but you are alert all the time as the atmosphere is always prompting that something might go wrong. For example, the scene in the bathroom is so intense for me,the first time I saw it,I was so scared,I even tried not to look and I felt fooled when nothing really scary happened. :D What about that scene where Danny is riding his bike in the house and when he rides on the floor there is that annoying sound the tires make?Or the elevator and blood coming from it?All this seems like nothing but these small details add to this film's suspense. This is,I think, the best thing about The Shining - making ordinary things noticeable and scary.

Finally,to cover it all, there's this great performance by Jack Nicholson. His portrayal makes the character very creepy, very realistic and absolutely insane.Even at the beginning when Jack Torrance says that there's no way he will lost his mind,he already doesn't look like an ordinary family man.

To sum up,it is the best horror film I've seen, topping Psycho,The Exorcist,Rosemary's Baby,The Omen and other great classics for me.Sadly,I can't watch it very often as it really freaks me out. ://

Gotta agree with this. Though that seems to be a theme with the PTA movies I've seen. If it weren't for the amazing performances, I would've said the same for The Master as well.

I LOVE The Shining. Jack and Kubrick are two of my favorite people in film history and they MATCHED. I liked the spooky atmosphere in this movie. I condsider the ending scene (with the old photo) one of the greatest and most magical scenes in cinema history. That's as awesome as horror can get!

9. True Romance (1993)

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQgXc5tWGc9QeoL2wojzomdoxH9ow_CuOb3at1W4PxSSLoPzuS8

You know how there are some films which you have in your watchlist for ages and you keep postponing them?So usually you have low expectations when you finally decide to see it and how amazing it is when you fall in love with such a film as you expected nothing.

This is what happened with True Romance for me.It was probably the first film(along with few other who will come up soon) which struck me instantly and just when the final credits started,I said "This is now my favorite film".Well that was two years ago,so this film went down to 9th place but I could watch it anytime and it's still one of the most entertaining crimes stories I've seen.

For those who don't know,it's actually a love story.Lonely guy Clarence meets a friendly hooker Alabama and since they are both flawed, they are a bit opposite, they connect. Then this love story quickly turns to a police and criminal chase as Clarence steals money from the coke dealer who is Alabama's pimp.

Although the trademark of the film refers to romance as "killing, stealing, cheating",from one point of view it is a romantic love story film. Not because it's "Bonnie and Clyde" type story but because relationship between Clarence and Alabama are honest and natural. They are not perfect, they don't talk like they're on the stage, first movie scenes when they meet are quite traditional and familiar.I don't even like romance films but I enjoyed this one.

This films features a great cast which involves Christian Slater,Patricia Arquette,Dennis Hopper,Chris Penn,Christopher Walken,Gary Oldman and James Gandolfini. Also Brad Pitt,Val Kilmer and Samuel L. Jackson make a short appearances. But despite such legendary names,I couldn't say that this is an extraordinary acted film.It was good, maybe even great (such cast definitely gave much more colorful characters, like Drexl or Floyd) but I wouldn't get your expectations very high.

There is this famous Sicilian scene in this film but I was always much more affected by the beating scene as it was really cruel, realistic and inhumane. Can't remember more violent scene in film.

Then, there's this great,fast-paced and entertaining crime story with some humor elements which completely draws you into the film.It is not a drama,it won't make you think but it's something that should entertain you.The screenplay was written by Quentin Tarantino and many people say that he should have directed the film as it would be much better but I personally love "True Romance" as it is and crime film fans must see it. :)

I like your review but I found this movie extremely slow and boring. There was a total lack of pace and I kept dozing off, waiting for something to happen.

8. The Dark Knight (2008)

There are some major spoilers
People keep complaining that movies are getting worse but have you noticed how the superhero movies evolved?Earlier there used to be a strong hero and a very strong villain, both with either very good or very bad character features and we knew that the hero always wins.More earlier films also had these cheesy special effects and unrealistic, even comic dialogue.

Now superhero films try to have more depth. They do more analyzing, therefore they are not so shallow. They give more detailed stories and they do deeper into the characters.First film that I thought was something better than typical happy-ending superhero movie was Spiderman 2.It wasn't perfect but it already started questioning the roots of being a superhero,it showed that ''superheroism'' has its flaws. But I think Nolan's Batman trilogy(particularly Dark Knight) really introduced a new type of superhero film.

In Dark Knight,Batman,as well as The Joker, are not pure good and pure evil. You can't actually say that Batman is a decent person as he really let some people die whereas the Joker doesn't do evil because it is evil.We are aware that he had a bad childhood and all his bad acts are not done in order to earn money or just be evil.He often tries to tell something, his evil actually has some other meaning apart from being bad.Joker wants to prove what happens when people are pushed to their limits,he wants to show that they become animals. He kind of proves his point a couple of times like when he threatens to blow up the hospital.Such things make the viewers think that maybe the villain isn't so bad,he is just damaged. The ending of the film as well as Harvey Dent story are also very interesting and quite unusual.Rachel's death ultimately proved that in superhero film good people do not always succeed. In the end,we realize that although good wins and the villain is defeated,a great price had to be paid.It shows that fighting bad is not easy.

Despite being so clever,The Dark Knight is great at all other things.I love the plot of this film,it's very consistent and interesting and I think that is very important to these type of films.I believe that because of the fast pacing, all kinds of audiences should admire this movie.Directing was just great,I can't see such film made better.I don't know much about the special effects but everything looked great for me,I had no problems with any of the visual things in the film.

At first,I was skeptical at Heath Ledger's performance but when I saw the film,I realized that all the praise was for a reason. He really pulled off a psychotic yet clever and creepy Joker. Some "clever" people like to compare him to Jack Nicholson's Joker in Tim Burton's Batman(1989) but I find that extremely stupid as the characters are very different, directors make an absolutely different approaches to the character.

Dark Knight is my favorite superhero film and personally,I don't see any flaws in it.With the full Nolan's Batman franchise finished,I still believe that this one is the best film of the trilogy and I really hope it will be remembered in the future because of its simpleness and yet much greater depth in the same time. It's not only an entertainment but also gives the viewer something to think about.

P.S. Have you noticed that in Nolan's films woman usually dies or is already dead? Memento,Prestige,Inception,Dark Knight(haven't seen Insomnia and Following).

Just in case someone feels that I overpraise this film,I can say that I love all Tarantino films pretty much the same.Basically,if I would have seen Death Proof or Jackie Brown just before creating the list,I would put those one higher. That is the thing with Tarantino for me.I remeber when I saw IB for the first time,I gave it a 10 in IMDB.Then, after a while,I was checking my rated films and when I saw IB having a 10,I thought "no way it was that good".So I re-watched it and guess what?Fell in love with it again. :D

I cannot explain why I like this director,I just do.I love how Tarantino can take each genre and recreate it by his own rules(Django for western,Kill Bill for action,Death Proof for horror etc.).This time,he chose war and he invented a much more elegant ending of WW2.

On the other hand, many people started loving Christoph Waltz after this film and I liked him too but definitely not as much as many people do.Personally,I don't think that he is the key of this film.

Anyway,if you like Tarantino, you shouldn't miss this film.

Sometimes a film doesn't have to do something spectacular and original in order to be remembered. It just need to do all the basic things good.

Such movie is Goodfellas - it is very well written, characters are consistent and greatly developed, dialogue is authentic and notice how the plot is neither fast nor slow - the film goes in small steps and yet you feel that it is going somewhere so it's interesting to watch.Another thing that makes this film so captive is that it has some hilarous moments like the famous "funny" scene or my favorite helicopter scenes which I find so hilarous(it's one of my favorite scenes in film).

The source material is good and I like that this film is accurate.

As for the acting,I think Pesci and Liotta are the stars shadowing De Niro.I love Lorraine Bracco in this, too. But basically all the cast has something that might get you to like them.

Also, this film is full of small casual details that make it more realistic.I think narrating is also a good idea which doesn't let you to "lose" the plot.

Basically, watch or rewatch this film and you will see what I'm talking about.I think that every film should learn from this how to really present a story.A flawless masterpiece, deserves all the praise.

I don't remember what I felt the first time I saw this crime thriller but now it's one of my favorite films ever made.It just really gets you involved in the story and it's interesting to see how it will finish.Despite being violent at times, this film has a lot of emotional scenes,so it's just even better. It also has some really funny sequences (like Mathilda and Leon dressing into famous people,or Stansfield saying that he's calm :D).With all that,Léon is full of action, suspense an drama.

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTJ18kJT8mTcTxnGDA70e_oy7id20v_H9b89WlJIxj6B5VJyYn-BA

"The world will never be the same once you've seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump."

Two,maybe three years ago if anyone would have asked me what I thought is the best film ever made, without any doubts,I would answer "Forrest Gump".

I could chat for hours about this masterpiece and how great it is,I even talked about it during my speaking exam few years ago,so I had to do a lot of research and it just made me to love the film even more.

"Forrest Gump" tells a story about a man with the low IQ.Don't get the wrong idea - it will not be a film about a retarded man and his struggle to blend into society. You don't have to pity the character and, in fact, after the film, you may start pitying yourself as Forrest's life is much better - he sees everything like a 7 year old.Love, friendship, war, meaning of life, politics and other things for Forrest Gump are simple. If he is left by a girl, sure,he is sad, but he can go on with with life.He doesn't take death as hard as normal people do because his "mama" told him that death is a part of life. One critic,I think it might be Roger Ebert stated that Forrest is not dumb - all the people around are way too clever. After seeing the film you may start thinking that this is true.We make everything so complicated,we can not let go of things,we fight and cry instead of just enjoying life.Forrest enjoys and this is what makes this film so magical. It's so pure and innocent.

However,it is not a comedy either.Forrest Gump's childhood friend Jenny is opposite to him as she never gets enough of life, she is seeking experience, adventure.Another character Lieutenant Dan,Forrest's friend, becomes even a bigger cynic after a tragic war accident.Yet,why does he keeps hanging out with Forrest? No,it's not for money. It's because Forrest has hope, which lieutenant has lost long time ago. When Dan visits Forrest after the war,he says that he's here to try out his sea legs. Then Forrest reminds him that Lieutenant doesn't have legs.Normally, that's an insult but it made me think why that is considered to be rude?Because people nowadays tend to think that other people always have bad intentions towards each other. That's not how it should be.

One thing which,in my view, makes this film a masterpiece,is the fact that it is about everything and,in fact, you will get what you want from the film.It talks about happiness, depression, despair, fear, love, friendship, dreams, business, family, war, politics, history, even culture and tradition. It is also so original and unique that I think it certainly can be placed in the same shelf with timeless classics.

Of course, this film isn't historically accurate as Forrest Gump is a fictional character(I wish he wasn't).But notice, how well made are those scenes where Forrest is present in historical moments. Also, notice the optimistic music, the bright colors and the astonishing acting. This drama really takes you away to a better world.

I am really glad that this was one of my first childhood films because it taught me that being clever or all-knowing cynic is a curse and simple,tolerant,open-minded people are those whose lives are most full of joy.As the tagline says, world might change for you when you see it the way Forrest does.

It's so strange to see that some of you like Pulp Fiction but dislike Reservoir Dogs.Aren't they alike?
However,I think I can understand disliking Kill Bill and IB as they are more "distant" from Pulp Fiction,Reservoir Dogs,Jackie Brown.Haven't seen Django Unchained (considering that QT doesn't make films very often,I want to watch it much later) but seeing how many people like it,I'm becoming a bit skeptical.
Great to see some love for Forrest Gump.
yes,I'm glad to see that some people in this forum like it too!

3. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR0Sncg0gQzPhCVrEzCjLVBQgddBJO3dTBYxsAp4vmUy-3yl8fm

McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) rapes a girl but instead of prison he pleads insanity and therefore,he goes to a mental institution.McMurphy thinks that he is very lucky until he meets Nurse Ratched(Louise Fletcher) - a manipulative lady who makes his stay at the institution much more difficult.

I will start by saying that this is the best acting I've seen and I saw this film about 3 years ago.Probably I've seen more than 400 films after it but none of them were better in the acting category. To be honest,I rewatch it basically for the acting and it is not only Jack Nicholson but pretty much all of the cast.Louise Fletcher makes a great female villain,my favorite one.She looks nice at the beginning but you can quickly realize that she basically oppresses her patients and makes them stay as she can easily manipulate their fragile minds or con them. However, she can't "win" Mcmurphy that easily because he is not crazy or weak,he is a rebel.I love seeing how these two bossy minds clash and fight with each other without any guns or even words. You can easily get the atmosphere when they just look at each other.Jack Nicholson was so great in this role, some people say that he wasn't even acting as the character is quite similar to his real self. The supporting cast is awesome, especially the patients but they are quite overshadowed by Fletcher and Nicholson.I think that maybe that was intended since McMurphy anbd Ratched are more important than the patients.

If you watch closely,it's easy to understand that this film is something like an allusion.Mental hospital represents the country/society,Nurse Ratched is the government, and Mcmurphy is the rebel or just the one who don't trust the government.Patients are just the calm, law abiding citizens.Put everything into places and you can easily understand what does this film intends to say.I like that because it makes the movie not only meaningful but also captivating and interesting. The ending is really good.

This film is very well shot, love the dull atmosphere, haunting music, outfits, camera angles.I noticed that this movie looks like a documentary at some points as dialogues and relationships between people are really down-to-Earth.

The only thing which,I think, was unnecessary, was the fishing scene. It doesn't harm but I don't think it makes the film better.

To sump up,this is the best acting I've seen in film and I love how clever it is.I would strongly advice to see it if you haven't.

2. Pulp Fiction (1994)

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRq-QoCbGaL7Nrl9xzu63uEzOfoEwB4Sa07lxS55QDxTHvB_TDC

This is what an entertaining film really is.Some people tend to think that simple films or as other people call it - films for fun should be stupid,badly-acted etc. Pulp Fiction just proves that entertainment also has to have quality.

Basically I love it (as I love many other Tarantino's work) for the dialogues, colorful characters, strong females, great music, plot twists and that feel of elegance or authenticity. Also there are lots of small details(like Mia mixing cocaine with heroine) or short scenes(dance scene) which make this film much much better.I noticed that this masterpiece is also one of those rare films which are liked both by mainstream audiences and sophisticated viewers and that is an uncommon thing.

Anyway, whenever I want something fun from the film industry,I know that Pulp Fiction will provide it.The title even says that.

This is my favorite scene from the film.Basically such scenes (that feel of something real and unreal at the same time) is the reason why I watch films overall.

P.S. funny thing that the first time I saw this film not in the original language and totally disliked it.Then after a month, maybe even sooner I rewatched it in original language and since then I love it so much.Guess talking really means much with Tarantino.
P.P.S. That makes 3 films in the top 5 made in the same year - 1994,that is quite strange.I was born in 1994,too.

1. The Godfather (1972)

https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQghO2-ScXcHv5k-uheEH9T213wjfKbrL57_NuLIKKBiEwz6g5s

When Godfather was released Steven Spielberg stated that he thought of quitting directors career as he knew that he will never create something as perfect as The Godfather.Honestly,I believe that it will take decades to see something as great as this film.

It may seem banal and completely unoriginal but Godfather is the best film my eyes have witnessed.I couldn't say that it is my favorite film(it is one of the favorites) but it is definitely the best.

Now,why do I like it so much?Basically because it is great at everything.Usually films have only one or few things which are really good, like acting, plot etc. and other things are mediocre or even bad.Well, that's not the case with the Godfather since everything in it is above average.Acting is definitely not typical, characters are being quoted even today.Cinematography just flows along with the story.Music, authentic details and costumes takes the viewer back into the 40s.Dialogues create this artistic yet real atmosphere.

Have you noticed how people often argue whether films are entertainment or art?Godfather gives both of them for me.It is so interesting to watch how the story will evolve and what will happen and yet it seems that you can mute the film and just enjoy the cinematography and actors' expressions.I love that after the film I feel that I have spent my time well as well as I know that I've just seen something that only an artist can make.

My favorite baptism scene just proves how great this film is.Notice how the music stops, when the priest ask Michael if he believes in God or if he renounces Satan?Or how whenever he answers that he renounces Satan, someone is killed by his orders?I love this contrast of baptism and killing,I love how this scene is shot and put together and the acting is so subtle but still astonishing. That's just a scene but basically all the film is like that.

I did some counting yesterday so the top directors are:

Tarantino - 6 films
Scorsese - 5 films
Spielberg - 4 films (that was unexpected!)
Ritchie,Hitchcock,Kubrick - 3 films
Also want to mention F.F. Coppola, only two of his films made the list but those are two real masterpieces.

Since I'm always rating films on IMDB,there are some fun statistics:

My favorite rating from 1 to 10 is 7(135 films),followed closely by 6(131 films) :D

My top rated genres are:

biography (7,4 average) ,history (7,27) ,crime (7,11),mystery (7,07).

My least liked film genres are:

romance,comedy (both 6,1 average) and family(5,9).

Really surprising thing was when I learned that my top rated year is 1997. :D
Personally,I love 1994 (Pulp Fiction,Forrest Gump,Leon,Shawshank Redemption) and 2008 (There Will Be Blood,The Wrestler,Little Miss Sunshine,Dark Knight,Burn After Reading)

Okay. Have you seen Casualties of War? If not, I recommend that on the basis of Full Metal Jacket and Platoon (and the conjunction of Scarface and Carrie, of course...).

My favorites on this list are Rear Window, Carrie, Seven Samurai, The Dark Knight, Easy Rider, Full Metal Jacket and Aguirre. All of those are great. It's also nice to see Oceans Twelve, which I don't think I've seen on a favorites list before but is easily my favorite of the series. Oh and I liked The Ring a lot too. Overall I suspect we share an appreciation of style-obsessed filmmakers.

Daniel,I would recommend Bonnie & Clyde,Scarface and Leon from my list.Considering that you like crime genre,I think you will enjoy those. Also, seeing that you basically love my top 15,I think you should see One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. :D

Have you seen Casualties of War?
no but I have it on my watchlist.I was planning to see it some time ago but when I was so disappointed by The Black Dahlia which is also directed by Brian De Palma,I never got around to see Casualties of War. :)

It's also nice to see Oceans Twelve, which I don't think I've seen on a favorites list before but is easily my favorite of the series.
I enjoyed the sequels, although the first one was clearly the best. One film of the series which really bothered me(I'm pretty sure it's the last) was the one where Julia Roberts played Julia Roberts, that was stupid. :D

Overall I suspect we share an appreciation of style-obsessed filmmakers.
good point, are there any directors that you like and they're not in my list and I might like them? :D

cricket, what does * mean?I like your ratings, our taste for films is quite alike. :))

Very impressive collection of movies by your age. I began watching movies more seriously only after I turned 18.
I think my film odyssey started when I was about 15 or 16,although I felt the love for the films even earlier.I should thank my parents for letting me watch Kill Bill when I was way too young for that film. :D
I like your ratings(except for The Beach, this movie isn't that bad!) and I noticed that you often give near perfect score (3.5-4.5) which means that our tastes are not exactly alike.Judging from your list,I noticed that you equally like both arthouse and entertaining films and I really admire that. ;)

It would be interesting to see how your taste will evolve over the following few years. Mine changed greatly over the last 5-6 years.
I think I've seen most of the modern entertaining classics so later on I want to watch more old classics, foreign or simply not so known films.I've seen some and mostly disliked them,so this "research" will be slower but I also found some true gems and I want to discover more!

Camo, quite interesting ratings actually, doesn't seem that you're keen on one particular genre. :)

I loved the idea that this horror/sci-fi flick showed all the story from first person perspective.Maybe The Blair Witch Project is more popular but I prefer this one.It was interesting,it was quite creepy and, although it's about a monster, for me,it looked realistic.Acting was really good.I would definitely recommend it, a great experience.

I thought I was alone in thinking this film was original and all around fantastic! +1 ALL DAY!

59. Trainspotting

http://i49.tinypic.com/2ln90s5.jpg

Trainspotting is one of my favorite drug movies, although I can't call it my favorite, maybe because it's a bit harsh at times. Many people argue whether Requiem For A Dream or Trainspotting is better and although I have placed Requiem higher,I believe that this drug drama is better in content. It doesn't only show that drugs are bad,it's not depressive from the very beginning and characters are better developed than in Requiem. It also has better intro. :D

This is also one of the films where I really enjoyed the music.

Trainspotting disappointed me, I think the book is far superior and the movie didn't do it justice.

.I love how Tarantino can take each genre and recreate it by his own rules....(Death Proof for horror etc.).

Death Proof is NOT horror. It may have a few (very few) aspects of horror, but in no way is a horror movie. I don't know what genre it would fall into, but definitely not horror.

47. Requiem For A Dream

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSEXB70innYibTq68SDfC8B5LbncUGb2PKEntQGWm41L32ANUpudpl8DphF

I believe that many of you have seen this film and I noticed that it is one of those few movies who are liked by film buffs as well as those people who watch mainstream films just for entertainment.

Another thing I also wondered is why this film is so depressing for everyone. Before I saw it,many people told me that Requiem For A Dream will do such an impact on me that I will never try drugs. But honestly,I wasn't moved and it wasn't as shocking as it is to some people.Sad - yes, but it didn't stick with me for long

I believe that the strongest thing in this film is the way it is filmed.Very interesting and unusual camera angles, quite unrealistic colors and overall, when I watch it,I get the impression that everything in the film is happening next to me.And of course, that great soundtrack which is actually now a bit boring and overused but when I heard it for the first time,it was amazing.I even learned it to play on piano. :D

I also used to dislike this film because I usually look skeptically at things which all people like but later I realized that this film is quite unique and there is a reason why it is praised.

I kind of agree with you about this movie. The first time I saw it (before a lot of drug experience) it moved me greatly, and I did find it very sad. The saddest part of the movie to me is Jared Leno's mother, but also the trio's ending point. But, when I watched it years later, I didn't find it to be as great a movie, and definitely not as sad. I still think its a fantastic movie, and still get feelings about the mother. And, unfortunately I think it's not as sad because it's much more real to me and not unusual or shocking.

Death Proof is NOT horror.
What I meant was that QT can take on each genre by giving it his style.Yeah, maybe Death Proof isn't exactly "horror in QT style" but I think he used horror elements and mixed them with exploitation films.Anyway,it is hard to determine what films are considered to be horror,I've heard that Twilight is supposed to be a horror movie, too. :D The genre was not the point of my statement. :)

Ok, just was wondering where that came from :) It got the "what!?" response from me. And I agree Tarantino puts his own twist on things.

I put LA Confidential on there, I used to own this years ago and loved it and forgot about it. A couple other ones I was interested in but when I looked them up they were too expensive for this batch of purchases. Also, I was reminded of Le Femme Nikita which I have continuously heard about and want to watch it, but also end up forgetting about it. I don't know anything about it, so it's hard for me to say if I'll like it. Also, may put Basketball Diaries on there, and/or Gangs of New York. But I think these reviews may be a bit biased as it seems you are a big fan of Leo DiCaprio??? :)

Gabrielle947

I actually never even have a desire to read a book which is not as known as the film(like Clockwork Orange or One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest). But anyway,I had this experience a few times when I both watch the film and read the book.I remember that when I was little I caught Psycho remake on TV,so I watched it.Then, accidently, I found a book in my house,so I read it.And only then I saw the original Hitchcock film but I never even felt like comparing them.Maybe it's because they both were pretty good. But I find it difficult to compare these two art forms. :)

But I find it difficult to compare these two art forms. :)

Definitely true. And it's hard for a movie to live up to a good book, because in one paragraph an author can put so much more description than could ever be told in a movie, in ways hard to describe.

Le Femme Nikita reminds of another Luc Besson film Leon,so if you like one,you should at least enjoy another.I've seen Nikita only once but I think after a few re-watches I will appreciate it even more.

And no,I don't like Leonardo DiCaprio. :D Actually, unlike most people,I don't find him that special, although now that you mentioned it,he really is the lead character in some of my favorite films.
Basketball Diaries is also related to drugs,so it would be very interesting to see what you think of it!Maybe it's quite sentimental but that's my childhood film,so I got used to that.
I'm not sure whether you will like Gangs Of New York, people opinions in this forum very differs.Anyway,it has this great DDL performance,so your time won't be wasted whatsoever. ;)

.Maybe it's because they both were pretty good. But I find it difficult to compare these two art forms. :)

Yeah, I have several favorite movies that are also favorite books of mine and it makes me happy when someone does a really good adaptation of a book I love, but I don't feel like I should judge one based on the other.

My guess is all Luc Besson's good films will remind you of Nikita. It's the one film he keeps remaking when he needs money. :D
