Well in honor of Halloween month I will be creating a top 31 horror list of the horrors I've seen pre this month. I'll be posting one a day until my number 1 is revealed on Halloween.

31. The Excorsist (1973)
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/14/Pazuzu.jpg

The Exorcist is in no way a scary film. I don't believe in that kind of stuff, but it the best of the little sub genre it created. I think the movie is well made, but scary, no way. I guess it has to be included in horror lists now a day, and I guess it's a good starting point.

What do you think is scary?

What do you think is scary?

Do you mean in general?
Some slashers, some ghost stuff, insanity, isolation

mark f

What films?

Your answer seems to imply that The Exorcist may be scary since it could qualify as at least three of those categories.

donniedarko
10-02-12, 01:16 AM
Oh, well I guess you'll just to wait and see, no I'm totally kidding. My top 10 actually has three horrors, some other ones you'll see on the list are Poltergiest, Scream, and Session 9. Just don't wanna give away the whole list.
And I wouldn't say it qualifies in anything, ghost, I guess demons, but then again I said sometimes. It wasn't really insanity in the eye of the film maker and church, it was a possesion. And I guess she felt isolated being tied down in the room, but the protagonists weren't really isolated at all. So I wouldn't really qualify it under any, and remember none of those are bulletproof to scare me.

mark f
10-02-12, 01:21 AM
You believe in ghosts?

donniedarko
10-02-12, 01:27 AM
No, not at all. Like sure spiritual occurrences maybe. Who knows? I can't call B.S on all the stories.
Yet ghost movies can still scare me. Excorsist movies are tied to closely with te Catholic Church, and I'm not trying to start a sh*tstorm but thats an organization I've disregarded of all it's relevance and legitemict. Just in my opinion, not to humble of one though.
It's just the panormal activity that can be freaky, while Excorsism movies to me are more on the ridicolous side, along with a good chunk of ghost movies

I've experienced haunted places a few times, and have heard great stories from people I trust of their own experiences. I'm not totally comfortable calling it "ghosts" because the word implies too much, but there is energy or are energies that do these things people talk about, noises, humanoid shapes, moving objects like chairs or doors. It happens. What it means, whether intelligence or awareness is involved, I don't know for sure. Sometimes I lean toward the idea that such things are all like echoes, sometimes I'm sure there's more to it.

The Exorcist may just be the best made horror film of all time. A truly superb piece of work.

30. The Sixth Sense (1999)
http://images2.static-bluray.com/reviews/662_2.jpg

Probably next to Fight Club next for the greatest twist of all time. M Nights films had some spooky moments, especially the flash backs. The end is shocking, and while there were a few holes in it all in all it's a good movie. Bruce Willis had potentially the best performance of his career

29. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
http://sharetv.org/images/posters/a_nightmare_on_elm_street_1984.jpg

What's a horror list without this film? Wes Craven directed this epic classic. It has influenced multiple sequels and remakes, Freddy Kugar is to this day one of the most influential horror characters. It had a slow climax, but the ending made this all worth it.

28. Disturbia (2007)
http://lilyincanada.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/shia_labeouf_in_disturbia_wallpaper_1_800.jpg

No it's not nearly as good as Rear Window (which will not make this list since I consider it thriller) but its not half bad. I feel like Shia should've been more isolated and trapped, if they wanted a great movie. But they still made a decent one, some creepy moments, and I still remember many details after all these years since I've seen it

Great idea, matey. Disturbia is more a thriller to me than horror (actually not really a horror at all, but I do love the film.) Yes Rear Window is better but Disturbia is a fun watch

27. Let The Right One In (2008)
http://www.filmcritic.com/assets_c/2010/02/Let-the-Right-One-In-thumb-560xauto-24642.jpg?AMCN
This is one of two vampire films and one of two foreign films making it on this list. Let The Right One In involves an outcast boys relationship with a vampire, this might be an off switch for some, but this is actually a very touching story. The scene which occurred under the bridge was the most memorable, along with "I will hit you with this stick" scene. Very bloody for a teen love story too.

26. Orphan (2009)
http://static.thecia.com.au/reviews/o/orphan-3.jpg
Underrated and much mor physiological than it appears. I even prefer this to the film it's said to steal stuff from The Omen. The twist shocked me, and I felt deep frustration towards the characters. It felt a bit rushed, but at the same time it means it was to the point. Keeps your heart racing, in my min it's a good movie, which is contrary to popular belief

http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/15000000/tO-the-others-2001-film-15040379-456-346.jpg
I would call this a bigger version of The Sixth Sense. This is also one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. Nicole Kidman was stunning. The cast was stunning. The twist was stunning. I stringy recommend everyone to watch this movie, I feel like I should've even put it higher. Yes I  this movie.

http://moviesmedia.ign.com/movies/image/article/962/962813/drag-me-to-hell-20090316101213524.jpg
Sam Ramis Drag me to Hell did get to silly at the end, it hurt the movie, but didn't ruin it. This stuck up girl gets cursed by this old creepy ass lady, she then has a really tough choice to make, to keep the curse or pass it on to someone. I remember two scenes vividly since watching this in theathers, the restraunt and the car. The first one was emotional and had you wondering the latter was scary as all hell. Very well put together modern horror

23. Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
http://filmbalaya.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/night-of-the-living-dead.jpg
After a spree of recent horrors, here is a recent one. This is without a doubt the best zombie movie, it is a classic. The cheapness of it only adds on to the scares. The graveyard scene was memorable, there were thrills all the ay through. Without a doubt does it deserve all of its praise.

Not only is Night Of The Living Dead the original and best of the zombie films, but it's one of the very few black and white movies I can watch without constantly thinking:

http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g425/eurekapaprika/http-__makeagifcom_media_4-04-2011_RyK0qM.gif
This is a stunning horror with a nice touch of almost folk like humor. A sudden and odd ending, and some creepy nightmares. Werewolf's are a ridiculous thing to be afraid of, but I was afraid for the protagonist. Deserves all the props it has gotten.

http://www.filmoria.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Tucker-and-Dale-Vs-Evil-Still-1.jpg
This is more of a comedy but trust me there are plenty of scares. One of the few films to cruelly achieve a strong mix of comedy and horror, I actually like it more than some of the coming up movies, but as a horror this is as high as I can rank it.

18. Texa Chainsaw massacare (1974)
http://www.dvdinmypants.com/reviews/O-V/images/texas2.jpg
The oddest horror movie I've ever seen, this classic while it didn't scare me while I was watching, it stays in my mind. Grandpa is the most memorable character, and the hammer scene was horror gold. The chainsaw dance and knife in the car scene were also creepy as f**k. A disgusting movie that's hard to swallow and more unique than usual slasher

Raimi to direct remake of Poltergeist?

Horror legend was set to produce, now it looks like he's directing too

Sam Raimi may be set to remake the new version of 80s classic chiller.

The revered director has long been in a producer's role for the film, but it's now thought that he'll be directing too.

Screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire, the Pulitzer Prize-winner who has been drafted in to write the new screenplay, is the one who reckons Raimi is most certainly set for the director's chair.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Lindsay-Abaire confirmed that Raimi was directing, but was not directly quoted.

Later, the writer of the piece, reporter Scott Feinberg, tweeted: “Lindsay-Abaire told me that Raimi was directing it. I’m very confident that that’s what he said.”

There's no confirmation from the studio as yet, but Raimi is currently finishing his 'Wizard of Oz' prequel 'Oz the Great and Powerful' for Disney.

Concern among fans over how the original Tobe Hooper-directed supernatural thriller may be reinterpreted may be eased by the news that the reboot is in Raimi's hands.

It follows the news that his own classic 'The Evil Dead' is being remade by director Fede Alvarez, with both Raimi and the film's original star Bruce Campbell having given their stamp of approval and appearing in producer's roles.

Aye. And I actually think, because of how meta and recursive and self-aware horror has gotten, it actually doesn't get its due for doing all that stuff before the rest of them. That was a really clever way to approach the genre, even if it's old hat now.

Two Hitchcock masterpieces right there :yup:

I had the immense pleasure of seeing Psycho in a theater this weekend. I think a lot of the people there had never seen it before; there were lots of screams in the audience and I actually saw people jump on several occasions. Pretty much erased any doubts that it's the best film I've ever seen.

As to whether or not the movie counts as horror, I think it crosses a wide variety of genres. Aside from horror, it's a psychological thriller, detective mystery, black comedy (something I noticed a lot more in my most recent viewing), and a road movie.

That does appear to be the case. I've often wondered how much directing and writing New Nightmare helped Wes Craven make Scream so good. Having already written and directed a post-modern horror film, the tone and context of Scream's script wouldn't have been too 'out there' for him.

While I've always liked Fright Night, it's never been a favourite of mine.

I think you have some great picks. The only one I find interesting that you put was Disturbia. I mainly say this because you state that Rear Window didn't make the cut because it's a thriller, but I would say the same about Disturbia. It is the teen version of Rear Window and I would definitely look at it as a thriller and not a horror, but to each his own. Over at my sight I have my own list going for Halloween. If there's any underrated horror out there it's this one. The opening scene was in my mind the scariest scene ever. Well to be fair Honeykid you've said that about every Kubrick film

4. Triangle (2009)

This could be argued to be more of a thriller, regardless though it would be impossible for me to exclude this epic film from the top five of this list, the greatest guilt pleasure I have

Polanski can do anything (other than Comedy and resisting his dirty urges). This was a perfect thriller/horror, legitemetely flawless. Superb score and my heart rate just kept rasing

Not a fan of Polanski but Rosemary's Baby is an awesome film. Not scary as such but definitely has a paranoid and spooky atmosphere.

I'm not a fan of RB, but I have to say that I liked it a lot more the last time I watched it.

^ Niceeeeeeee. Adore the film. The person showing us this film had the sound/bass turned up loud when I first saw this on a big projector screen and the industrial/humming sounds throughout the film were disturbing!

I want to see Rosemary's Baby a lot,is it very scary? :/ Or more creepy/tense?I can't watch movies where something creepy shows up out of nowhere but I want to see this a lot. :D

More creepy and tense, and more scary afterwards, the end feeling

Yeah it's not the typical gory horror jumpy kinda movie like Halloween or Friday The 13th etc...

... it's all about the atmosphere and the build up of paranoia and tension. Kinda like Psycho maybe...

1. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

A big five winner and in my mind well deserved.
"It puts the lotion in the basket" is still one of my favorite quotes, even have a shirt with it. Two creepy villains, and a superb Jodie foster performance. Stuck with me, it was scary during the film, and afterwards. Truly the greatest horror.

^^Not a horror film.^^

Good film, but horribly overrated and I still can't believe Hopkins' acting is considered great rather than brilliantly entertaining, but hugely OTT, ala Gary Oldman in most Hollywood films. Honestly, I think this film dies on its arse without Clarice Starling and Foster's performance.

Enjoyed the list, though. :)

Rosemary's Baby is scary on many different levels. The paranoia that comes with starting to suspect people you trust to be something completely sinister and not what you knew them to be really gets to me. On that same note, the paranoia of not trusting your own mind and your own judgment is equally disturbing. Both are well illustrated through Rosemary's story. Then there is the ick factor of giving birth to a demon hell baby.
