The BBC's modern day version of Sherlock Holmes is just about the best thing on television, so it deserves its own thread.

For those who haven't seen it, here's a trailer:

For those who have, any theories on the events of the finale? Remember your spoiler tags if you do...

Saw the first season, loved it, but being one of them 'Mericans, we don't season 2 until May or so. Looking forward to it. :)

Series 2 just finished here on Sunday and it was an amazing finish to one of the best series out there right now. Second series is even better than the first.

Season 2 was definitely a lot more consistent than the first, shame only 3 episodes a go though. I worked out the Baskerville's twist early on but the last episode had me literally questioning the world. I've read up on a lot of theories but it doesn't seem like there's nearly enough to more than speculate on the answer.

I've read quite a few theories, but none of them seem to fully explain everything. I half suspect a sort of cop-out resolution, though.

Got to agree with Thursday, Sherlock is probably the best thing on TV right now. A truly fantastic series. And I agree with most saying the second season was better than the first. While I felt Hound of the Baskervilles was a bit weak I loved Scandal in Belgravia and Reichenbach Fall.

As for theories not too sure myself. Came up with some theories myself but not sure. The most intriguing one I've read is

EDIT - How the hell do you get spoilers to work properly? It just keeps disappearing.

uh-oh, I shouldn't have wandered in here.... lol

I'm watching the Baskervilles episode tonight. I'm just now watching the second season on public television.

I LOVE this show -- Benedict is incredible. He's so weird yet I've found myself strangely attracted to him.

Don't watch it on American screens, they have apparently cut out scenes from the first episode of the third series... If you want to see Sherlock, see it outside of America or UK shown episodes online.

OMG!! Now that I saw the third episode last night, I know what you're talking about! I was really tired -- had taken a sleep aid, too -- but I refused to stop watching! I was recording it in case I fell asleep, but wow, it was so exciting and interesting, I stayed up. Then, lol, I couldn't get to sleep.

HOW IN THE HECK DID THAT HAPPEN???

First thing this morning, I looked up some theories, too. Jaydee, if you want to post your theory, just use the spoiler tags at the top. Make sure your text appears within the tags....

what great TV! And to think, ABC is going to have a modern Sherlock with Lucy Liu as a Watson of sorts. Remind me to miss it.

I love this show; I'm sad there are only 3 episodes to enjoy per season. Are they doing a third season?

Oh, and Moriarity? He can't be ________, can he?

Now I can catch up with Game of Thrones on demand. :)

Yes, it's amazing what they'll do to get around the 'homosexual' undertomes of Holmes and Watson. Now that one of them will be a woman, they can have a nice romance... Eventually.

I know this isn't the place for it, but Fincher is making a version of House Of Cards. I'm just going to hope it's good, that they don't try to make the 90's version and do my damndest not to compare the two. I know, sounds like mission impossible to me, too. But at least I'm going to give it a go.

Yep, a third series is official.

thanks.

I also read an article about Steven Moffatt and he was laughing at the fans online because they all missed a clue as to how this happened.

I wonder what clue he is talking about?

It figures I love this show and Doctor Who. Moffatt!

WOW! That voice got me sold. I think voices and attitudes can really make a character and that one was perfect for the role. (I know, I'm a freak!) So theres already a second season? How can I get the first one? I love crime shows a lot too.

Yoda

Moffat gave us a clue about the clue: he said Sherlock had done something very out of character. I assume this is either...

a) making a phone call to Watson, rather than texting, or b) crying.

tramp
05-22-12, 09:26 PM
I wondered about that! Especially (b)!

So what does that mean?

Yoda
05-22-12, 09:34 PM
I think...

...a) means that he needed to be talking to Watson in real time to make sure he was in the right place for the death-faking to work. Notice he yells at him when he gets too close. And I think b) has something to do with that chemical he mentioned earlier that lowers your pulse and makes you appear dead, but also makes your eyes water...something like that, I think it was.

There are about a half-dozen other things in the episode, too, that give them several ways to potentially explain things away. Most are a little bit of a stretch, but they did have the good sense to stuff a ton of details in there that could aid our credulity.

tramp
05-22-12, 09:46 PM
Oh yea, (a) I had kinda realized but (b) was totally surprised. Could be that I missed something the week before.

well, I will wait with baited breath to see how it turns out. I also want to watch it again.

I don't think the British version of Sherlock has anything to worry about going by the clips for the American version called Elementary in this video:

No ****, Sherlock. :D

You should've known that when it was announced and, if not then, then surely once they made Watson female.

JLM looks alright but was anyone else getting the sense the creators couldn't hold the laughs back as they tried justify it's existence with some nonsense to avoid saying it's a knock off.

As soon as I heard they were making it and setting it in America, that's when I didn't care. I haven't been worried at all. :nope:

You mean literally, or in the sense that they've clearly laid out like half-a-dozen quasi-explanations (the homeless army, the morgue lady...) that they're hoping we all accept as adding up to one actual explanation?

This is a good show. Question though? Moriarty isn't really dead is he lol? That clever little maniac is too smart for that.

So what did people think of the new episode? I thought it was great, just as good as the rest. Loved the first 5 minutes LOL.

I loved John's reaction especially given what John was in the middle of doing.

Spoilerish beware!

Wonder who the mystery man at the end was? Moriarty's father would be epic!

The actual explanation for the fall was fairly good, and massive LOL for the 2nd explanation.

Worth the wait!

Episode 1 and 2 were wasted on Sherlock's return + Wedding. Ep 2 was lol bad. Episode 3 was a return to form but quite a long way from the high points of the series.

My episode ranking;

S2 E1
S2 E3

big gap

S1 E1
S1 E3
S3 E3

big gap

S1 E2
S2 E2
S3 E1

big gap

S3 E2

The middle episodes are always the weakest of the three.

Ok, I just have to get my 2 cents in on Series 3. I though it was brilliant. All three of the eps! Every one.

I love this show so much. Words cannot express how glorious I think it is. The writers love the source material, and while some complained on twitter that Sherlock was being too "human," the truth is, he does in the books. He obviously becomes a different man through his friendship with John.

This series was all about these two men and how they've developed. I thought the wedding episode was such a great one in its exploration of what Sherlock would do for his friend. There wasn't much of a mystery involved, but that drunk scene made up for it.

I also want to say that I'm so surprised by how much I care about Sherlock. When he was ------

SPOILER -----

shot, I was so upset. I also thought that 10 minutes of TV where he was shot was the best 10 minutes of TV I think I have ever seen. I care about this character so much and he can be such a sh*t at times but it doesn't matter. Cumberbatch is amazing.

Anyway, I love this series with a passion I don't often feel for a TV show. Both of these men are just too great at what they do.

Watch Martin's face and eyes when he realizes Sherlock has returned. Wow. What a performance. And Benedict is soooo funny.

Hey Tramp - welcome back.

Agreed that season 3 was enjoyable. They definitely humanized Cumberbatch's Sherlock, and surprisingly enough, Mycroft as well. I felt like the show went from being loosely arced one-offs to a seriously intense straight arc, and I'm not so sure I like that as much. It's not that I don't like it, more that the kind of arc they began in season three (loosely in season 2) requires a more character driven plot, rather than basic (if interesting) procedural. I imagine this is why they have to flesh out Sherlock's psyche and motivations, and I quite enjoyed that they opened the show to include his parents and Mycroft. I have a strong impression they will keep Mycroft as a staple and foil to further humanize Sherlock.

Monk was so Sherlock ("If you think I'm smart and anti-social, wait until you meet my brother - that guy makes me look normal!")

I also love how they're both so passé about their parents, but their mother turns out to be a genius. I'm still waiting on the big reveal about their dad (who claims he is a moron compared to the mom .... uhm. yeah right.)

Here's the thing: the john storyline was going to ultimately get boring because they married him off too soon. Mary is outstanding, but once they finally settle down to domestic bliss it will be back to procedural episodes. That is, unless they spice up Sherlock's life.

And they are trying. Valiantly.

http://movies.yahoo.com/news/sherlock-creators-discuss-season-4-planning-social-media-050000515.html

season 4 coming in 2016 - apparently they feel they have enough material to go for awhile, but getting the lads together is the biggest problem.

other high points:
1. they always meant to bring Moriarty back - it wasnt a wild fanservice plot device
2. they mean to use Doctor and Mrs Hudson more
3. more women to be added

and ...drumroll please.....

Gatiss said that as the show continues, "It's about keeping it new" and introducing new characters, as well as continuing "Sherlock's gradual humanization."

ion - i never liked moriarty in the first couple of seasons but now that he's been gone - after that cameo I realized how much I missed him. Good thing he's coming back!

Wildly entertaining show. The third season had a couple of issues, but it was certainly the best, because each of the first two had significant lulls. This didn't really dip much.

So, I'm definitely looking forward to the new season. But I'm not looking forward to the inevitable part--just like in this past season--where I have to bite my tongue and try to look past whatever convoluted non-answer they have for this latest resurrection, though. It seems like they work backwards from the thrill of the surprise and don't really mind if there's a plausible explanation for it in place. They'd rather have that moment of shock upfront, whatever it costs them in narrative integrity next year.

I feel you. And while I get that Moriarty was his nemesis in the books, I cant help thinking - surely they can extract or create, or goodness, even write in another book villain to be as interesting, yes? I found Magnusson to be intriguing but clearly he was a one-episode wonder, and his resolution felt rushed.
